New Year’s will be a blast Continued from Page 1: Violinist Jo Moir says it will be a “blast� to headline the event, and will be made even better by the inclusion of former Waratahs accordian player Alan Norman, who plays with the band only sporadically. The five-piece band have formed a sound based on “folk-rock/country with a celtic overtone�, but the crowd can also expect some party favourites, she says.

Apart from Moir’s violin and Norman’s accordian, the band features the standard guitar, bass guitar and drums, and possibly a Hammond [electric organ] on Friday. The Hobnail Boots have released four studio albums to date, their 2002 album On With The Show gaining critical acclaim. They will play four sets on Friday between around 10pm and 12.30am at the London

The year 2010 has seen many positive developments within Blenheim, but one particularly exciting update was the $3million fundraising goal achieved by the Civic Theatre Trust. During the past 12 months, generous Malburians have got behind the fund-raising push for Blenheim’s new $17million Civic Theatre, raising just over $3million. Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley says geotechnical testing is currently underway to establish what foundations the building will require. He says construction will hopefully begin early 2011 once test results are back with a proposed completion date of July 2012.

Former Shapeshifters bar co-owner Kevin Robert King was convicted of manslaughter in the High Court at Wellington on December 2, 2010. Mr King was found guilty of the death of Blenheim man 24-year-old Matthew Heagney in August, 2009 much to the relief of his parents Pat and Pam Heagney. Matt, 24, was socialising with friends at Shapeshifters Bar above the Builders Arms in Blenheim in the early hours of Sunday August 23 last year. He was found with head injuries, thought to be from hitting his head on the footpath outside the bar. He died a few hours later in Wairau Hospital. When the jury delivered their verdict Pam said one of her first reactions was surprise. “We were surprised. The trial could have swung either way especially as no other night club bouncer had ever been convicted, but overall Pat and I are happy with the outcome,� she said. “This has been really hard on our family and if it wasn’t for our friends and Matt’s friends we would never have got through this. “For us it’s something we had to see through. It’s been a hard two weeks so hopefully this can help us carry on,� Pam said.

Blenheim twins meet ACDC Last Christmas five-year-old Blenheim twins Karlos and Maia Gemmell received an exciting and unusual gift, tickets to January’s ACDC concert in Wellington. For some children the gift of rock band concert tickets may seem unusual but for Karlos and Maia it meant a live encounter with a band they love. Making their gift extra special, the twins along with parents Bev and Ken met the band in person before the concert. Ken was tipped off by an industry contact who told the family where they could possibly see the band prior to the start of their Thursday and Saturday concerts.

Unsure if they would get the opportunity, Bev said it was amazing luck that they were in the right place at the right time. Karlos and Maia met with and had photographs with Angus Young and Brian Johnson who also signed their ACDC collector’s items. At the Saturday concert Karlos and Maia enjoyed watching from a seated area near to the stage and spent a lot of the show dancing and singing along to their favourite songs. One year on and Karlos and Maia can vividly recount meeting the band and watching the concert. “It was our favourite Christmas present,� they smile.

The first winemaker in New Zealand to use plastic bottles for his wine was Marlborough’s own Peter Yealands. At the beginning of the year Mr Yealands released his new plastic-bottled sauvignon blanc ‘Full Circle’. This initial release was met with resounding success which soon prompted a second run of 5000 bottles. “It’s the way of the future because the plastic bottles are 89 per cent lighter in weight than glass.� He said the bottles, made from polyethylene terephthalate, weigh 51 grams instead of the 500g of a traditional glass bottle. Traditionally, half the weight is in the wine and half in the glass bottle. They also use 19 per cent less energy to produce than glass bottles. “I knew it would be a success because

there will always be a niche market for people who want an environmentally sound product.� Mr Yealand’s ongoing commitment to sustainable wine tourism practices recently won him NZ’s first prestigious international ‘Best of Wine Tourism Award’. “I’m chuffed to be honest,� Yealands Estate founder Peter Yealands says. “We set out with a vision of best practice from the vine to the bottle and we’re delighted to have our commitment to sustainability acknowledged.� Yealands held out stiff competition from wineries from Spain, Italy, France, South Africa, the United States and Argentina, and was the only New Zealand entry to win an award from the network.

Cat hailed a hero Timmy alerts owners to fire Timmy the tabby was hailed a hero after saving the lives of his sleeping owners as fire threatened to engulf their home. The seven-year-old tabby repeatedly jumped up on Bryan and Shirely Kilgour’s bed alerting them to the danger as black smoke from a fire in the kitchen billowed through their Blenheim home on December 19. The fire was caused by a faulty dishwasher. “It was 3.30am and we were sound asleep,� said Shirley. “Tim kept repeatedly jumping up on our

bed, off and on, off and on, until I eventually woke up. Both Shirley and Bryan were in their eighties and woke to find their hallway full of black smoke. As soon as the couple escaped outside they alerted a neighbour and the fire brigade before Bryan received overnight treatment at Wairau Hospital for smoke inhalation. “Tim is a remarkable cat. We only had him for seven months before the fire which proves how loyal cats can be. We wouldn’t be without him.�

New year honours for local men Starting 2010 on a high note, this year’s New Year Honours announcement in January revealed two local and familiar Marlborough names whose hard work and community dedication have been recognised. Blenheim men Lawrance Saunders and Lawrence Duckworth

were both awarded for their extensive involvement with the community which for both men have extended more than 20-years. Mr Saunders was awarded for Services to the Community with emphasis placed on his many contributions to the Marlborough community.

Since being awarded The Queen’s Service Medal in 1986, Mr Duckworth was this year awarded For Services to Maori and the Community. The honours system is a way for New Zealand to congratulate and thank those who have served and those who have achieved.

Blenheim targeted in spy base protest Activists from all over New Zealand targeted Blenheim on January 23 to stage a protest at both Blenheim and the Waihopai spy base station. The protest was organised by Murray Horton of the AntiBases Campaign who welcomed protesters from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to Blenheim. Speeches and messages of support were read out before a march through the town which saw up to 40 banner waving demonstrators shouting “close

Waihopai down�. It was the first protest since a group of sickle-wielding peace activists attacked the spy base on April 30, 2008 “totalling� one of the balls which cost an estimated $1 million to replace. Samuel Peter Frederick Land, 24, of Hokianga, Adrian James Leason, 42, a teacher from Otaki and Peter Reginald Leo Murnane, 67, a Dominican friar from Auckland, were originally charged following the attack but later found not guilty in March this year.

Mr Horton said he was pleased with the “quite good turnout� and praised the local people that had turned up to protest. “Local Marlburians have got to have a lot of courage to join us because in the past we have been seen as outside trouble makers,� he said. The base is operated by the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), and at the time of the attack, then Prime Minister Helen Clark condemned it as a “senseless act of vandalism.�

Events get glass By Damian George Blues, Brews and Barbecues festival convenor Graeme Boon says he is “delighted� at the decision to allow glass into next years’ event, following a reversal of the decision to have it banned this year. The Marlborough District Council announced on Thursday glass would be permitted at both the Blues and Brews festival and the Marlborough Wine Festival. A decision last year to allow glass at the wine festival but not at Blues and Brews caused controversy and angered Mr

Boon, who had to leave $30,000 worth of imported French glasses sitting idle in a warehouse. “We are delighted that we got our consent as per the application,� he says. “For us, we have a percentage of our patrons asking for it and we also still had all that glass in stock.� He says he can understand the opposition to allowing glass into the events - which includes the threat of it being used as a weapon - but says there have been minimal cases of that happening in recent years.

A decision issued by councillors Graeme Barsanti and Graeme Taylor notes there has been a significant reduction in glass-related incidents over the last few festivals. However, it also states they are mindful of the nationwide trend of banning glass for similar events, and that Blues and Brews should follow suit in the future. Councillors Barsanti and Taylor acknowledge the Wine Festival is a professionally-run event and agree no further change was required for this year’s event.

Standing up for the working-class Jamie Arbuckle and Jessica Bagge talk to Damian George about their new roles as Marlborough District councillors. Newly-appointed Marlborough District councillors Jessica Bagge and Jamie Arbuckle share a similar goal for the future of the region’s governing body - to give the working-class a voice. Jamie, who works for himself as a market gardener, says he was driven to apply for a position on the council to break a “culture� which he believes favours only a select few. “There’s definitely a little click that goes on in our community and I think it needs to be a lot fairer,� he explains. “I’d say it’s easier for certain people to get certain things done - people at higher levels.� Councillor Arbuckle says the previous council failed to pick up on how much the Marlborough region was suffering as a result of the economic downturn, and wants to add some perspective to the decision-making table. “A lot of what goes on at the council the public doesn’t know about,� he says. “Being on the council helps give the younger people a voice because, in the work that I do, you get asked a lot of questions. “We [he and Jessica] know the hardship of living on quite a low budget. I think there are a lot of things that are too expensive, and we need to keep these prices in check and at a manageable level.� He cites the amount of compliance costs imposed on businesses as an example of a policy which does not favour the average person, and needs to be streamlined. “At the moment it’s more about our major projects - trying to slow them down to make them more affordable.� Councillor Bagge, a housewife and business woman, agrees there is a need for a wider approach to council decisions, and says the board need to share a wholistic vision for the region. “We have the most amazing, talented people in Marlborough and I’m looking for the council to bring these people together and all move in the

same direction. “There are people on the council who share that view and I’m excited by that.� Like Jamie, Jessica says she realised the only way to pursue this vision was to get involved with a committee who had the power to make changes. “If you want to have an influence on the future, the best way to do it is at a local level. “I’ve been on so many different committees over time and all of them rely on somebody further up.� Echoing Jamie’s views about the economic state of the region, she says there are an alarming number of people who are struggling to make ends meet. “I know of people who are 60 years old and have their own home but have no money because it’s all tied up in one asset, and they can’t afford to pay power and phone bills. “That’s the new client, that’s what’s happening to our families in Marlborough.� After three months on the job, the pair are aware the hard work is only just beginning, and the perennial struggle of following through with good intentions lies ahead. “We’re going through a honeymoon period,� Jamie says. “We will have to make some really hard decisions - especially with the budget - and that’s when the pressure comes on.� Jessica says one of her ambitions is to get people excited “There’s definitely a little click that goes about politics again. “It used to be a big thing. on in our community and I think it needs You used to grow up National to be a lot fairer,� Jamie says�. or Labour ‘cause that’s what your parents grew up. “You don’t have that anymore.�

What’s in a name? A brief history: Sinclair Street With Mark Stevenson First National

James Sinclair, known as the founder of Blenheim, was an active supporter of Marlborough’s independence from Nelson, gained in 1859. He was also elected to the first borough council in 1869 serving until 1872. A. Beverley, in ‘The First One Hundred’ recorded that by August 1879 there were “stormy scenesâ€? at council when Sinclair, as the largest ratepayer, opposed the proposal for an annual rate of 1/- in the ÂŁ. He wanted a rate of 6d, but lost. The next year, he was reported as appealing to the magistrate against his rates which he held were the result of faulty valuation. Again he failed. Sinclair was born in Caithness, Scotland in 1817 and moved to Wellington in 1852 with his wife and child and a nurse. Sinclair first set up shop in Nelson then built the first hut at Wairau in 1852, just nine years after the Wairau Affray. The Sinclair’s new home was built in what is now Sinclair Street. As well as building Wairau’s first wooden house, Sinclair built a row of buildings along the edge of the Opawa River including a bank, the Victoria Hotel and a general store. The Saint Clair winery name originates from the vineyard’s main property, originally settled by the Sinclair family. In time the name reverted to the original, Saint Clair. Through his many businesses, Sinclair amassed considerable wealth. He died two years after his wife in 1897 aged 79, with a reputation for always having his door open to both poor and rich. The reality of becoming a father is still kicking in for Callun Mitchell after the birth of his son and Marlborough’s first baby for 2010. Callun and Tania, baby Sean Vincent Mitchell arrived into the world at 8:54pm on Saturday, January 2 and weighed in at a healthy 6 pounds 11 ounces. Describing the experience Callun says the birth was ‘quite amazing’ and made extra special by baby Sean being the first baby of the year. Asked if he was present for the birth of his first child Callun exclaims, “hell yeah, I didn’t miss a thing.� “Apart from being a wonderful experience I found it very educational,� he laughs. “Tania did such a great job and after seeing the birth I have much more appreciation for what women do, she is such a glowing mother and I am really proud of her.� A very happy and cuddly baby Callun says Sean is a strong little soul, very content, sleeps really well and only hates being changed. “Whenever he gets a bit upset I just hold him and talk to him, just like I did when he was in the womb, it really calms him and quite often he’ll snuggle in and go to sleep,� Callun says proudly. Adding to his title of the first baby for 2010 Sean is also the first child for Tania and Callun and first grandchild for Tania’s parents.

The band are scheduled to play two one-hour sets at Picton’s Ignite Marlborough event at London Quay, before playing later at Blenheim’s event at The Forum on Market Street. Despite the tight schedule, lead guitarist Josh says both crowds can expect a highenergy performance from the former Queen Charlotte College students. “Everything we play is quite fast and all about keeping the energy firing on stage,� he says.

He says the pop-punk band will play everyting from original songs, to new release covers which they have put their own style to, and songs from yesteryear which “old people will know. “We’re really looking forward to it. It’s going to be great fun.� Recommended By Your Mum have already made an impact on the New Zealand music scene, and will be touring with Kiwi band Kids of 88 for three South Island shows in March next year. Meanwhile,a former Marlborough Boys’ College student will be carrying the flag for Blenheim when he performs on TV One’s New Year’s Eve concert on Friday.

Hayden Lawrence, 22, will be one of four competitors in the male vocal category of the show entitled ‘Freshly Squeezed Talent’. He will have just two minutes on the night to convince New Zealand to vote for him, through his rendition of When A Man Loves A Woman. Hayden is well aware over a million people will be watching the telecast, and that has been playing with his nerves. “I wouldn’t say I’m unconfident,� he says. “I’m very middle range. It’s very hard to tell how I will go. There’s some pretty varied performances and it just comes down to what people watching Channel One on New Year’s like.�

PAK ‘n’ SAVE to start within six months On April 27 the Environment Court gave the green light to Outer Limits to proceed with the Westwood Park retail box development. The fight to bring the proposed $56million Westwood shopping complex in Middle Renwick Road and Rose Street began in 2004 and after a long battle, Springlands will

finally see the beginnings of construction early 2011. Outer Limits codirector Phil Robinson confirmed that the construction of roading and services will commence within the next six months. “We don’t have a definite date yet, but we are pleased with current progress and have

a good crew on board,” he said. The construction of buildings will follow the completion of roading and services. The Environment Court agreed to a big box retailing complex consisting of four retailers including PaknSave, Bunnings and two rural supply outlets, plus a 300sq metre café.

Countdown dominates Progressive Enterprises made a substantial mark on Blenheim this year when they purchased two locally owned supermarkets and converted them to new generation Countdown stores. Redwoodtown SuperValue owned by Darryl and Cecilia Norman was purchased by Countdown August 8, and FreshChoice Springlands owned by the local Derry family was purchased August 18. Redwoodtown Supervalue owner Darryl Norman said, “We have put very careful consideration into accepting Progressive Enterprises offer. “We believe that this decision will ensure

that the local residents will continue to get a great deal and can still shop with the same friendly staff,” he said. John Derry who, with his family owned FreshChoice Springlands said the store will become the third and largest Countdown in Blenheim. “It will be Countdown’s flagship store which is something that excites us to be involved in, along with the new shops we hope to bring to Blenheim,” he said. The Derry family has owned the business for 40-years and will continue to own the Springlands Shopping Centre whilst leasing the site to Countdown.

Massive blow as Safe Air axes jobs Stunned staff at Woodbourne-based aviation engineering firm, Safe Air were delivered a heavy blow as nearly 100 jobs were axed in March. The Air New Zealand subsidiary, which is one of Marlborough’s biggest employers, was forced to cut more than a quarter of its workforce of 351 staff. At the time the airline group’s general manager technical operations, Vanessa Stoddart, blamed the cuts on more than 18 months of delays in the delivery of Royal New Zealand Air Force C130 aircraft. She added that the point had been reached when Safe Air needed to cut its workforce by about 100 people in order to sustain the jobs of the remaining workforce. “If we didn’t make this tough move, Safe Air will have incurred significant losses that would put the jobs of the remaining workforce in jeopardy,” she said.

Local drivers have dream start to series Two Blenheim racing teams have defied the odds to take out dual titles in the South Island Endurance Series which finished in Christchurch on November 27, 2010. Pat Heagney won the Matt Heagney memorial trophy for the four-cylinder class, dedicated to his son who died in August last year, while Scott McDermid and father Craig won the 3501CC class. He says the result is a huge achievement for a team competing against much more fancied cars from across the South Island. “I don’t think people realise in what context we are racing,� he said. “We were just a little team from Blenheim racing against GT3 Porsches. “It was a pretty big achievement for us and the family - we’re just little boys on a big boys paddock really.� Pat also said the victory was an emotional one as he was racing for his son.

Hold on to your seat speedway fans, The Basis New Zealand Stock Car Title is coming to Blenheim on January 6, 7 and 8, 2011. The Basis NZ Stock Car Title is one of the biggest events featured annually on the Speedway calendar and for the first time in Eastern States Speedway’s history, the title is being held here in Blenheim. For three years the Eastern States committee has been balloting for the title to be held in Blenheim. After much hard work, planning and negotiation Eastern States president Tim Alexander is proud to announce that around 150 of the country’s top stock car drivers will be coming to Blenheim to contest the title.

“This is a huge event for our club and a massive boost for our community. Each driver and his pit crew will be utilizing local services such as accommodation, restaurants and retail, this title has the potential to bring tens of thousands of dollars to Marlborough,� he says. The action kicks off Thursday, January 6 with a practice event for all the competitors. Friday will be the qualifying night which will see drivers compete to qualify over three rounds. The top six in each group will go on to race in the finals on Saturday night. The driver with the most points from the final three rounds will win the title.

Local lotto winners strike gold

New World Blenheim owner Mark Elkington and Lotto Manager Aimee Turner are thrilled for their mystery winner.

One lucky Blenheim lotto winner had more than her birthday to celebrate when she discovered she was one of two winners collecting a $500,000 share of Lotto’s First Division prize in March. The online winner, who bought her ticket via mylotto.co.nz, and whom remained anonymous, said she found out by accident that she’d won. The other winners, who bought their ticket at Blenheim New World, said they were equally excited when they found out they’d won.

“We usually watch the draw on Saturday nights, but the cricket was so exciting that we missed it and had to check our numbers later – the Lotto result was much better than the cricket one in the end though!� laughed the retired Blenheim local. Later in October Blenheim struck gold again with the lucky winner sharing Lotto’s First Division prize of $1million. This $500,000 win was New World’s second Lotto win for the year.

Hospital rebuild impresses Wairau Hospital’s impressive new state-of-the-art emergency department opened in February. The emergency department rebuild was part of a $45.7million overall hospital rebuild, with target completion this month and final occupation early 2011. Emergency staff now enjoy modern technology with all the bells and whistles at their disposal after moving

from one of the most antiquated areas of the old hospital. The unit, boasting 12 patient bays, an isolation room, quiet room and a childfriendly bay opened it doors for business for the first time at the new location on February 16. It also features a specialist treatment room for dislocations and fitting plaster casts as well as two resuscitation bays.

The department is staffed twenty-four hours, seven days a week and has over 600m2, plus the ambulance bay and holding area. The next stages which have either been completed or are due for completion early 2011 are the theatre, day stay unit, maternity, child and youth, paediatrics, outpatients, mental health services and the kitchen.
