Plane fan’s passion Aircraft restorer Jay McIntyre talks about the time-consuming pleasure of restoring old planes.
By Damian George A Blenheim man has become one of the first ever people outside of the United States to be awarded the esteemed Meritorious Service Medal, following his influential work with the New Zealand Defence Force in Afghanistan. Group Captain Greg Elliott, com-
mander of the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team [NZPRT] in 2009 which served as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, was presented with the award at a special United States medal presentation in Wellington last month. Mr Elliott was one of 25 Defence Force personnel to be recognised for
their work in the operation in the Afghan province of Bamyan, and one of just nine to be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Until now, the prestigious military decoration has only been awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for their service to their country. Continued Page 3.

Renwick School wins national competition
Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Renwick School’s Room 10 students and wouldbe video makers were announced last Friday as a national winner for the Cancer Society’s SunSmart Schools video competition. The school won the regional award, as well as the national ‘Year 1-4 category’ of the competition which saw schools from across the country make a short video on how (or why) their school should be SunSmart. Room 10 teacher Michelle Moran said her students based their video on a rockstar character they created called ‘Sunny SunSmart’. The video followed Sunny SunSmart with students doing a backstage interview before his rockstar performance. All winning schools will receive an interactive whiteboard donated by ACTIVboard NZ Ltd and Telecom and a resource pack, and, for their regional award, Renwick School won a $500 cheque for their school hat funds.

Christmas concert reaches funding goal By Damian George Denis Humphreys was always confident the Marlborough community would save Blenheim’s annual Christmas in the Park concert at Pollard Park, but he did not expect it to happen so quickly. Mr Humphreys, the event’s organiser, put a call out to the public early last week for help with funding after the event lost $6000 worth of sponsorship less than two weeks before Sunday’s concert. Within two days, $2500 had come in. By Monday, the money had been raised. “I was quietly confident we’d
get [the money],” Mr Humphreys says. “But I thought it would take the two weeks, but it’s come in in, well, six days, really.” Mr Humphreys and his organising team had already decided the concert would go ahead regardless of whether the money was raised. He says he had been unsure what he would have done had the money not been raised, but this concern was put to rest by two local businesses, who he did not want to name. “The amazing thing is we had two companies say ‘if you’ve got
S
a shortfall, give us a call and we’ll make up the difference’. “I think that’s something that needs to be celebrated. “That’s a great community spirit.” Mr Humphreys says the money came from both individuals and businesses, and highlights just how much the concert means to the people of Marlborough. “Obviously, the community value this event and they don’t want to lose it. “It’s just a real delight to be able to serve the community with something that they’re prepared to help with.”
Police have cited a law change which allows evidence from deceased people to be heard in court as the main contributor which led to the arrest of a Rotorua pensioner on Friday for a 32-year-old murder. The man, who has interim name suppression, is charged with shooting and killing Rodney Edward Tahu in Turangi on August 16, 1979. He has been remanded in custody and will reappear in the Rotorua District Court in January.
Mccaw bReakS Silence All Blacks captain Richie McCaw broke his silence yesterday on what many believe was a deliberate eye gouge on him by French player Aurelien Rougerie in the Rugby World Cup final in October. Speaking for the first time about the incident, McCaw said the match got “filthy”, and he was surprised Rougerie was not cited by the International Rugby Board for the eye gouge.

Man injured in awatere Valley A 45-year-old man was flown to the Wairau Hospital Emergency Department with neck and back injuries after falling from his trail bike in the Awatere Valley on Sunday afternoon. Marlborough rocked by quake Marlborough residents were rocked by a 5.7-magnitude earthquake on Saturday night, the biggest to hit Marlborough in 45 years. The quake, felt as far north as New Plymouth, was centred 30km east of Picton in the Marlborough Sounds at a depth of 60 kilometres.

Lights out for Christmas trees By Damian George The 16-metre-tall Christmas trees put up in Blenheim and Picton streets until last year will not go up again this year, and their future does not look bright. Marlborough Lines are responsible for erecting the artificial trees in Blenheim’s Market St and on the Picton War Memorial. Marlborough Lines operations manager Brian Tapp says the company cannot afford to put the trees up, and no one seemed to miss them in 2010. “I think, probably, the world has moved on a bit, and we’ve moved on,” he says. “I don’t think there was any comment in the media when they didn’t go up last year - nobody said ‘the world’s come to an end because the Christmas tree hasn’t gone up’.” Mr Tapp says the company did not consider putting the trees up for a shorter period, as the cost would have been largely the same. “It costs the same amount of dollars to put it up and take it down - the power that the lights [on the trees] use is not significant. “We’re not just talking $500 to put a Christmas tree the future does not look bright up, we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars. “With people struggling with their power bills, we for the artificial christmas tree in feel it’s optional spending that we don’t need to do.” Market St.
Lighting up the Renwick sky When Renwick woman Val Alcorn began dressing her home with Christmas lights 16 years ago, she never anticipated having more than 30,000 twinkling from every corner of her front yard. “I started counting lights as I was putting them up this year, but lost count after 38,200,” she laughs. Val began her laborious annual task on
November 3, and with the help of her friends from the Fun Seekers Leisure Marching team, Val is almost finished. “I only have 88m of rope light to go, but I’m just waiting for it to arrive. “It will be used to line the archway over the driveway which will make it all a bit brighter,” she says. With her Christmas light display Val also
installs a donation box for people who might like to drop in some money. “Whatever is donated goes toward the power bill and then whatever is left over goes to the Fun Seekers,” she says. Val hopes to turn on her Christmas lights this Friday from 8.30pm until 11pm. People can view her lights and walk around her garden at 6 Kowhai Drive, Renwick.

The two trees, set up by the Blenheim Beavertown Lions, will remain at the mall until December 18 for people to hang a memory label and Christmas bauble by making a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go to Hospice Marlborough. Blenheim celebrant Rosemary Powell will bless the trees before they are taken down, with the labels to be burnt and scattered in the hospice gardens. Yes they should. The government should pay.
Parents should be able to provide lunch themselves.
Bring it back. The school should put in some money, and the parents put in some. It needs to be a joint effort.
I think they should bring back lunches, it would be great for the kids.
As long as it is done well and in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. Those who can provide or pay for their own should.
I’ve always provided for my kids no matter what happens. It’s the parents’ responsibility. I know there are those struggling, but it’s all about priorities.

Thanks to all our volunteers Dear Ed, Today (5 December) is International Volunteer Day, so we’re writing to publicly thank all St John volunteers for making such a tremendous contribution to local communities over the past year. Without their dedication, skills and compassion, St John would not be able to provide the level of ambulance and community services
we currently provide. We know our volunteers often go above and beyond the call of duty, putting their communities first, and we would like to acknowledge the sacrifices often made. We are delighted to join with volunteer organisations all over the world in acknowledging the vital contribution of volunteers. We would also like to thank the
Bring back the trams families, supporters and employers of our volunteers, whose support is vital to enabling our people to contribute so much. We wish you, your readers and your staff all the very best for Christmas, and thank you for your continued support of St John. Yours sincerely, David Thomas St John South Island General Manager
Dear Sir, In response to Travel Guru’s letter, published in The Sun on Nov 23: Travel Guru entertains the idea of trams as a tourist attraction. Think about this. The Tramway Historical Society brought trams back from the grave 50 years ago. I know - I helped restore 178 and 152 many years ago. Now some
of these trams are mothballed and likely to be for years to come. If the idea was to take off I would respectfully suggest that those interested contact www.ferrymeadtramway.org.nz. These boys have a wealth of experience and I am not so sure they would not warm to the idea. Bruce Whiteside. Miami, Qld
Budge Street issue Dear Ed, Budge St, on the Riversdale side of Blenheim, is a street with only one entry/exit to and from town. The police presence and blocking [of] the entire street is that regular, it feels like harassment. I wonder, too, if it is the demographic
that the police target, or just revenue raising? Whatever the reason, if I stood outside your house that regularly, I’m sure you would have cause for complaint. But, do we dare question police tactics? Sick of being stopped
Clean and green, or just obscene? Dear Ed, The Judge who has just drastically reduced the sentence of the Renwick man who bludgeoned to death the Seals at Kaikoura, which outraged the world, must believe she has the backing of the NZ public in her decision or she would be sacked. (The SPCA has called the decision ‘appallingly wrong’ for sending out the wrong message regarding NZ attitudes towards animal cruelty). Within minutes of landing on the South Island in Picton, one of the first sights International visitors will see on SH1 is a scene straight out of Apocalypse Now – steep hillsides stripped
bare. But this must be what the NZ public want, for the Forestry Industry to be allowed to carry on in this manner, whereas in many developed countries in the Northern Hemisphere, a significant visual buffer of native deciduous trees is the norm and at a safe distance back from the road. It is purely the lack of population that has kept this country relatively pristine up till now. How long it remains that way is up to all of us and the decisions of those in power we allow to take. Bill Foster

Renwick Hall for all people Dear Editor, With regards to the letter to the editor regarding the Renwick Community Hall, that hall is an asset belonging to ALL the people of Marlborough. Not to a certain number of people, or to the council! To suggest that it should be given away is illegal and illogical. It is not unusual for halls to have limited bookings. But the major user government department should be charged rent sufficient to cover running costs and
maintenance. Government Departments do not hesitate to charge us plenty for their services. I understand from a previous letter in the Sun that the Education Board received a substantial grant for maintenance, but it has not been spent for the purpose given. (Incidently, land owned by a Government Department happens to be tax payers land). Those concerned need to stop pushing this irresponsible proposal. Yours, Concerened Citizens Inc.

Ex-Ashburton mayor takes over pharmacy By Darren Greenwood Ashburton’s former mayor Bede O’Malley has arrived in town to take over the Redwoodtown Pharmacy, but Marlborough mayor Alastair Sowman need not worry. The pair know each other well and O’Malley says he has no plans to enter local body politics up here. “I think I have enough on my hands and I am sure my wife would not be too pleased,” he told The Sun. “We have been pretty bruised by the [political] process in Ashburton.” On Thursday, Mr Sowman cut the opening ribbon at the popular pharmacy, a business Mr O’Malley had first looked at buying 28 years ago. Mr O’Malley ran the Unichem Pharmacy in Ashburton up until five years ago, before he sold it to concentrate on his council duties. But he was defeated in the 2010 elections, ending his six-year mayoralty. O’Malley’s wife Julie, a school teacher, is still in Ashburton but the pair’s house is currently on the market. Mr O’Malley says when the house is sold, Julie plans to also move to Blenheim. He says they are both looking forward to walking on the Queen Charlotte track, as well as renewing family contacts in Nelson.
Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman officially welcomes the new owner of Redwoodtown Pharmacy, former Ashburton mayor Bede O’Malley, on Thursday.
Council, retailers to discuss car park proposal By Damian George The Marlborough District Council will hold a meeting with Queen St retailers on Monday to discuss the proposed pocket park development on the corner of Queen and Charles streets. The proposal, outlined in the council’s 2010 Blenheim CBD Streetscape plan, recommends removing the existing car park on the corner which holds 43 parking spaces. It would also see a further seven car parks at the southern end of Queen St removed. Businesses in the area have opposed
DOC silent on reduced sentence
the move, fearing a loss of customers and loss of business. The concept was first proposed in the council’s 2009 plan Blenheim Town Centre: A Vision for the Future, which was adopted by council in 2010. It was taken further in the 2010 Streetscape plan. Retailers expressed their anger last week when they learned of council’s plans to adopt the 2010 concept despite earlier being told by Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman that the original concept would be the one up for consultation.

By Damian George The Department of Conservation [DOC] has declined to comment on the reduced sentence of the man charged for his part in the killing of 23 fur seals in Kaikoura last year. Jason Trevor Godsiff, 20, had his two-year jail sentence reduced to eight months’ home detention after his lawyer won an appeal in the High Court at Wellington on November 1. DOC South Marlborough area manager Dave Hayes told The Sun after the initial sentence in September the jail term would send a clear message to people about the consequences of animal cruelty. However, Mr Hayes declined to comment on the latest decision and what impact it might have.

Reach for the skies Jay McIntyre, owner of JEM Aviation at Omaka, is one of New Zealand’s top aircraft restorers. The former NZAF engineer talks to Darren Greenwood, revealing restoration is a time-consuming and complicated business.
Down at Omaka, expect to find Jay McIntyre fixing up old aeroplanes. McIntyre works 60 hours a week on the antique flyers and says he will remain there till the end of his days. Some of the jobs can take years and leave their owners with six-figure bills but, despite the long timeframes of the various projects, McIntyre says a German-made FockeWulf will be flying this week for the first time since Easter. And a three-year project to fully restore a Russian-built Yak 3 fighter plane should be complete early next year, with the craft as one of the attractions at the Warbirds over Wanaka Airshow. McIntyre, from Gore, has a long association with Marlborough, which started in 1989 when he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and trained as an aircraft technician straight out of high school. The Southlander was in the Air Force for 12 years, which included three years in Australia working on the Skyhawks. He
returned to New Zealand “when Aunty Nanchang and vintage biplanes. Helen [former Prime Minister Helen Clark] “The staff are generally enthusiasts. They disbanded the airforce.” have the right mix of skills. It’s a hobby, but In 2002, this led to a job with Antique it’s also a business, so the customers have to Aeroworks, working on the fledgling World pay,” McIntyre explains. War 1 planes at Omaka. Some of the larger planes, like the Yak 3, can cost thousands of dollars an hour when they fly. “They are expensive but no worse than a big boat, anyway. Planes are a person’s passion and they will find a way [to own one].” Jay also has his own plane, a 1930s Waco craft he co-owns with a couple of others. It was bought four years ago in Australia during “a moment of weakness”, as it once belonged to the Blenheim Aero Club. “It will probably never fly because the customers come first. It will probably cost $100,000 to repair,” he says. McIntyre still visits Gore, where his brother and parents remain on the family farm. Sometimes he drives, but sometimes he will fly, using one of the Aero Club’s Nanchang planes, for example. He has no future plans, other than to carry on the business. “I’ll keep on till the end of my days. I won’t be able to afford to stop working,” McIntyre adds.

Black Caps’ discipline lacking in heavy loss Just about everything New Zealand needed to do to be competitive in the first cricket test against Australia last week, it didn’t. The eighth-ranked test nation entered the first of two tests in Brisbane buoyed by the withdrawal of five Australian players, including three bowlers likely to have been named in the starting X1. But dropped catches and soft dismissals directly contradicted the visitors’ blueprint for keeping pace with a very good Australian team on home soil. From the first session, New Zealand was on the back foot, losing four wickets by way of some loose, reckless batting.
Whatever was to unfold over the five or so days of this test, coach John Wright’s instructions to his batsmen would have been to make Australia work for every one of the 20 wickets it took, should it do so. That plan was blown out of the water within two hours. New Zealand’s first innings bowling was largely very impressive. It did exactly what an attack with limited resources needed to do – bowl tight, be patient, and chip away at the wickets column. But it was let down by dropped catches - three off the bowling of young seamer Doug Bracewell – at crucial times. It was still in the game when

it had Australia five for 237 midway through day three, but centurion Michael Clarke was dropped twice as he and Brad Haddin took the game away from the Black Caps with a 108-run partnership. Clarke was also bowled off a Bracewell no-ball when on 23. He went on to make 139. New Zealand’s second innings typically capitulated, but it was the fore-mentioned errors in the first three days which cost New Zealand the chance of taking the game into the fifth day. On the plus side, the batting of Dean Brownlie was a revelation – he, along with Vettori, made batting against a fiery Australian attack look relatively easy.

Bring joy to those less fortunate The annual Christmas Present Appeal begins
FOR THE CHILDREN: Open Home Foundation staff Christine Campbell, Anne Wilson and Karen Burns get into the festive spirit as their Christmas Present Appeal begins this week.
Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Christmas is only 18 days away but for some children, there won’t be gifts waiting for them under the Christmas tree. This is where the Open Home Foundation and the Sun Newspaper have teamed up to collect donations of gifts in the Christmas Present Appeal 2011. The Open Home Foundation is a community organisation working in the care and protection of families and children at risk, including foster, respite and long term care of these children. Through this Appeal, children who are less fortunate in Marlborough will have a gift of their own through the generosity of the community. Open Home Foundation practice manager Anne Wilson says last year’s appeal was “overwhelming”, with enough gifts to give to every child and family. “One very special moment for us was being able to help a stressed out family with six children who, due to family circumstances, had to put Christmas on the back burner. “We were able to give them gifts which were perfectly matched to their ages which changed their Christmas and made it special,” Anne says. The Foundation works with 35 foster families and around 100 children aged from birth through to
17 years. Receiving gifts for boys, girls and especially teenagers is greatly appreciated. Gifts can include deodorants, body creams, shampoo and conditioner sets, hair accessories, nail polish or even clothes for teenagers. For younger children board games, trucks, dolls, activity books, colouring pens, playdough and reading books are great ideas also. “Last year we also had some presents donated for the children’s parents like chocolates, dinner sets and little gift packs. “Movie passes are also a fantastic present to give teenagers,” Anne says. People are encouraged to donate ‘unwrapped’ and new (not second hand) gifts so they can be sorted out and later wrapped by a group of volunteers. Simply bring in the donations to the Sun office at 72 High Street in Blenheim. The gifts will be collected by the Open Home Foundation on Monday afternoon on December 19 and delivered to the children in the week prior to Christmas. For any enquiries contact Celeste at the Sun Newspaper. Bring a little Christmas cheer into the lives of children less fortunate than ourselves and support the Christmas Present Appeal.
