By Celeste Lodewyk and Annabelle Latz It has been and gone for another year but the flavours and memories of Marlborough’s Wine and Food Festival will long linger on the lips of those who attended. Festival numbers remained on par with last year’s count of around 8000 people, including the 1000 people working on the day, said Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens. “A new element to this year’s festival was sell-

ing tickets on the day which saw a huge surge, and we received excellent feedback on the food and the organisation of the venue, including details like ‘time out’ areas for people who may have overindulged,” he said. Pernod Ricard New Zealand public relations manager Cathy McKeown had her first taste of the festival and spent the day serving customers from the Brancott Estate stand. “Despite the cooler weather sales were really good and the crowd was great.

“Sales for our three brands were best for Brancott followed by Stoneleigh and Deutz,” she said. In its 29th year the festival not only impressed those who were visiting from out of the region, but also the local businesses that were open to greet and farewell festival-goers. Fairweathers on Scott owner Warren Croft said they had an influx of out of town visitors coming in prior to the festival and returning the following day. Continued Page 3.

By Annabelle Latz The lack of sun was the main culprit being blamed for the quieter street market in Blenheim last Friday. The sun usually shines bright for the annual Marlborough Wine and Food Festival weekend, with the stalls in town on the Friday offering an extra day of festive buzz. But word on the street from shoppers and stall holders last week was of a quieter turn out, and most cast their eyes to the sky when asked the reason why. “It’s a bit quieter, maybe it’s the weather, because usually it is so hot. Usually it’s so busy you can’t get past people,” said Krystal McGregor from

tim Habe from Windsong Orchard in renwick

Blenheim, with her two year old daughter Rarzell. Niska Tapp from Blenheim was hoping it would get busier. “It seems pretty quiet, it might pick up.” ”We’re usually here for a baking hot sunny day and it’s mad here,” said Wayne Bushell from ‘Serious Staws’, a straw hat company that comes over from Mapua every year. Tim Haber works at Windsong Orchard in Renwick, and thought it wasn’t too bad, considering the weather. “There’s a decent amount of people, despite the lack of sun.” David Hudson has Hudstone Carving in Renwick, and hoped the market would get busier as

the day wore on. “It’s always quieter to begin with.” Dale Hayles from Blenheim said it was quieter compared to the last few years, but it was good to see the same stall holders coming back each year. Head chef at Chequers Wine Bar and Café Kyle Strong said the entire week had seemed quieter, and said the cooler weather would have been a factor. “The weekend is still looking good though, bookings-wise” But weather aside, people were still enjoying themselves. “It’s nice and friendly, and good organisation,” said Peter Busch from Nelson.

Trents future uncertain Staff and managers of Trents Wholesale Limited in Blenheim are currently in a discussion process, regarding the future viability of the business in the town. Trents is wholly owned but an independently operated subsidiary company of Foodstuffs South Island Ltd. It employs 10 staff in Blenheim. John Mullins is General Manager Wholesale Operations and Procurement for Foodstuffs South Island Ltd, and said talks were based around the centralisation of bigger distribution sites in Christchurch. “We have no definite decision yet for what is going to happen.”

Local business breaks record Cropduster band has town rocking From Page 1. “The festival definitely brought more people into town before and after the festival and apart from a couple of isolated incidences, everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves on Saturday night. “Many of those who returned for lunch on Sunday said if they had known the festival was this good they would have come earlier,” he said. Paddy Barrys Irish Pub owner

Liz McElhinney said she really appreciated the festival and reported a trouble free night. “Numbers for us more than doubled which was fantastic and meant we had to pull in some extra staff, but overall we were pleased with the weekend,” she said. The Cornerstone Bar and Restaurant manager Ryan McQuillan commended his staff for a “stella job” with the serving and man-

agement of the crowd. “It was a bloody long day for my staff but we had a very well behaved crowd and were very happy with the numbers, we even broke a few records.” He said the only difference from previous years was the earlier time most people arrived which we put down to the bad weather, and Christchurch band Cropduster didn’t disappoint,” Ryan said. It’s about Love Love Love Avalanche City features at Winery Tour By Annabelle Latz Singing is a skill Dave Baxter used to envy people for. It is now a skill people envy him for. The 27 year-old is the name of Avalanche City and the voice of Love Love Love, that soared to the top of the New Zealand music charts in record time last year. According to Dave, learning to sing was all about throat muscle strength. “If you want to get stronger muscles, just use them more. So I sang every single day.” His debut album, Our New Life Above Ground, was released last year. Dave has five band members, but he wrote, recorded, and released the album alone. Next Thursday he is performing at Villa Maria Estate, as part of the Classic Hits Winery Tour. When the first rings of Love Love Love were strummed, even Dave admitted to having something a bit special.

“I thought, ‘this is a poppy song,’ but I never thought it would go as big as it did.” He’s been touring New Zealand, United States, Japan and Australia since November. “I feel like I’ve been living in a constant state of surprise.” Surviving life on the road is all about his pouch of English Breakfast tea, sensible timed flights and his wife by his side. The New Zealand music scene excites Dave, and he supports the digital music phenomenon. “You can just do it your own way.” But buying albums is a pleasure he believes people will always indulge in, no matter how big the digital music world becomes. “Buying an album is not just about the music, it is the whole package including band information and images. The Classis Hits Winery Tour at Villa Maria Estate is on Thursday February 23, including more kiwi music from Gin Wigmore, The

Mutton Birds, and Marlborough Girls’ College musician Clara van Wel, who is opening the evening. Tickets can be purchased via the Winery Tour Website www. winerytour.co.nz, Ticketmaster 0800 111 999, www.ticketmaster. co.nz, and Ticket Direct 0800 4 TICKET, or www.ticketdirect. co.nz. New duo add to midwives team Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk What began as a distant goal for Blenheim mother of three Nicky Taylor, has now become a career and life long passion after graduating from her Bachelor of Midwifery and joining a local established practice. In November last year the Sun profiled Nicky, highlighting her journey toward becoming a registered and practicing midwife here in Marlborough. Nicky is now thrilled to announce that as of January 10 when she received her Annual Practice Certificate, she has joined local midwifery practice

– Midwives of Marlborough and has welcomed the addition of practice partner Emma Barnett. “It was a great coincidence when I met Nicky as I was in Blenheim meeting with local midwives and also contemplating moving here, so it has worked out beautifully,” she smiles. Emma who in December relocated here from Christchurch has teamed up with Nicky and together they have begun meeting with expectant mothers and steadily building their caseload. “We are really focusing on handling smaller case loads so we can spend more time with the women we have, all

the while supporting women to make the right choices for their own families,” Nicky says. Nicky’s husband Dion has been busy renovating their private clinic which is based at their Blenheim home. “We have aimed to create a nurturing and holistic atmosphere while reflecting our passion for the outdoors and ocean,” Nicky says. “We feel it’s a celebration of being a kiwi and celebrates the beauty of midwifery, something which is really important to us,” Emma adds. Contact details for Nicky and Emma are available on page 14.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk A woman described as being exceptional and selfless with 110 percent dedication, was awarded a special award in Blenheim yesterday. Jan Tardieu was treated to a surprise presentation of a Lifetime Membership Award by the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand. Jan has been a member of the Marlborough Stroke Club for more than 20 years and in her time she has “gone above and beyond” what was asked of her, including holding every position on the committee.

For her contributions, the foundation CEO Mark Vivian flew in from Wellington to present Jan with the second only award received by a south island member. “There has only been around eight awards given out so it takes someone truly extraordinary to meet the criteria, and Jan has certainly done this with her exceptional service to the Marlborough Club,” he says. After receiving the award Jan was feeling slightly emotional and overwhelmed. “Everything I did for the club I did because I loved being part of it, so thank you Jan Tardieu with her surprise award. very much,” Jan says.

Enduring success

By Annabelle Latz Charlotte Wadsworth was thrilled with her recent performance when she represented New Zealand for the first time in endurance riding. At Waitangi weekend she competed in the Trans Tasman challenge in Hawarden, where the New Zealand team picked up Silver in a close competition, just 1min 47seconds behind the Australians. Charlotte also picked up second place in the 100km individual Junior title ride, a close finish for first and second against kiwi team mate Vanessa Bragan. “It was the closest ride in a championship that I have had,” said Charlotte. She kept to her game plan, concentrating on getting to the finish line as quickly and efficiently as she could manage.

“It was about conserving energy. In the parts where I couldn’t go fast I didn’t go fast and then I made up in places where I could go faster.” Charlotte won Best Conditioned Horse with her mount Avaasha. Charlotte will continue her training until the National Competition back in Hawarden at Easter, where she will compete over a 120km track. She said it was a good track which was well marked out; essential during racing when you don’t want to get lost. Two other Marlborough riders also had a successful weekend. Robyn Hill on Silands Rhaffety won the 120km ride in a time of 8:27:07, closely followed by Heidi Bulfin on Stonelea Sparkling Rose in a time of 8:27:41. Silands Rhaffety took the Best Conditioned award in this ride.

Proudly locally owned Being a locally owned and operated service station in Blenheim gives Caltex Main Street StarMart a real point of difference, says owner and operator Grant Stubbs. Grant has been a Caltex retailer in Blenheim for the past 20 years but his history with the company extends back to his days as a mechanic working for Grove Road Auto Centre, where Eckford Engineering now stands. “After finishing there I purchased the Caltex site at 20 Grove Road in 1991, and then in 2008 I relocated to the Main Street’s Caltex and purchased the property and business from its Nelson owner. “What makes this business unique is the fact that both the property and business is owned locally, we are the last remaining Caltex in Marlborough and it is now the only locally owned and operated major service station in Blenheim,” Grant says. Where is the fairness in this? No one had a problem until Jim Anderton and The Greens came on the scene. Now we have a lot of disharmony. Nationals Mr Heatley could have put this right but he only listened to commercial and customary fishers. Recreational fishers never got a hearing. Why?

Recreational fishers are happy with a 60m net. Two people set nets in the same bay, one with customary rights, the other a recreational fisher - why should one have to stay with their net and not the other? We need to know. Stop the diversion. Come on Mr King, do something for the area, meet with Ministry of Fisheries, Outdoor Recreation, Sport Fishing. Dear Editor, I have seen this sort of damage before, PROOF and I feel for Mrs Prebble, but I think she will find that the damage could have been caused by lawn mowers. Whether tractor pulled, hand mower or weed eater, stones picked up by these

machines can be flung quite a distance with high velocity. I’m sure the maintenance / garden team are very careful in their work, but stones in a lawnmower are unavoidable and the stones flying path unpredictable. K. Hill Picton

they may start low quiet growling. “The growling means you are starting to get into serious trouble. Remember that any dog has the potential to bite, we treat all dogs the same.” Stray dog collection would be a part of Jason’s job he describes as the hardest. “We try our best to reunite the dogs with their owners, it’s so tough having to put a perfectly good dog down because it hasn’t been collected from the pound. But we only have so much room.” Costs involved for micro chipping and registration can be a deterrent for owners picking up their dogs from the pound. De-sexing an animal is also avoided because of the cost involved. Jason’s advice is to plan ahead. One visit to the vet to get a dog de-sexed and micro-chipped is cheaper than two. “It all boils down to cost, if your dog is micro-chipped and de-sexed, your registration is cheaper. The animal control team also visits schools and kindergartens with Mate, giving visual presentations on responsible dog ownership, reaching more than 30 classrooms and 420 children last year, with the same planned for this year. It is not just dogs that Jason works with. A day on the job for him has also in-

cluded tracking down a runaway chamois in Blenheim, and even a couple of turkeys. “The turkeys were at Christmas time, we only managed to catch one, we’re not sure where the other one ended up…” Jason wanted to emphasise that the role of his animal control team is a positive one. He loves his own dogs at home, the boxer Jess and the beardie Meg, and wants all dogs and dog owners to enjoy the special relationship they have. “The job can be tough, but we are here to help.”

FACTS:

• Jason estimates there are about 10,000 dogs in Marlborough. • Last year there were 5 dog attacks reported in Marlborough, compared to 15 in Tasman and 11 in Nelson. • In 2010 there were 7 dog attacks, compared to 17 in Tasman and 9 in Nelson. • Total numbers of attacks over last 5 years is 24, predominantly Border Collie, Labrador, American Pit Bull, Staffordshire Terrier, Jack Russell (in no particular order).

Steel sheds buck trend Totalspan Marlborough owner and Licenced Building Practitioner Darrell Smith has seen a lot of shed companies come and go in the past 12 years. Darrell says you can depend on Totalspan to still be around in 25 years time and continue to stand behind their structural warranty. Totalspan is part of the Spanbuild group who have been in the building industry for thirty five plus years. They own their own factory in Christchurch operating New Zealand made machinery to produce the buildings out of New Zealand made steel. Totalspan are a full construction building company and can meet all needs from single garages to large

warehouses. Totalspan buildings are engineered to certified New Zealand standards and are available in a wide range of Coloursteel colours. They are very strong, virtually maintenance free, and designed to withstand the harsh New Zealand conditions. Steel doesn’t rot or twist like timber can and other advantages are the extra room gained and the clear span (no internal poles) in the Portal and Flat Roof Farm Buildings. Above: Totalspans’ Darrell Smith right, with Pernod Ricard New Zealand Engineer Eric Witteman discussing the completion of Pernod Ricard New Zealands newly erected flat roof building that was constructed by Totalspan.

Aerial spray can control needlegrass Chilean needlegrass is getting out of control and could cripple the sheep wool and meat industry. The Environmental Protection Authority is calling for submissions on a recent application by the Marlborough District Council, to allow restricted aerial use of the herbicide Taskforce. The active ingredient is Sodium Flupropanate. Ben Minehan is Senior Bio Security Officer of Plants for the Council, and said it is a threat to the sheep industry. “The sheep industry (meat and wool) in New Zealand was worth $3714 million, or 9% of total New Zealand merchandised export in 2009, according to MAF records.” he said. He said it is very aggressive grass with minimal growth, but with sharp seeds that stick into the sides of sheep, even leaving bits of grass in the meat. “The sheep industry is worth a huge amount to New Zealand, and this is a real threat.” Ben has been researching the two weeds for 13 years. Taskforce has selective components, so would not harm other plants, and has a residual effect, meaning that for the following four or five years the unwanted grass would continue to be attacked. “It would really knock it back,” he said. The EPA will look closely at the restrictions that would need to be implemented. The Council says these invasive grasses, including kangaroo grass, exist in areas of Marlborough which are inaccessible to ground spraying equipment, and to vineyards. He agreed restrictions on the application of Taskforce are needed. He said Taskforce has been used safely by aerial application in Australia since the 1970’s, so is confident the council can work with the EPA to reach an agreement. “I think it will be accepted. There will be strict rules, which is fair enough.” Submissions close on March 23, 2012.

Independent Educational Home-Based Childcare

Quality Ratios to ensure your child’s needs and expectations are best met.

Move over Incredible Hulk – here comes another toddler temper tantrum! Most parents, if not all will agree that temper tantrums can occur at anytime, anyplace. Why does it happen? Toddler tantrums occur for a variety of reasons, the most common is an inability to express feelings and desires through words. They may feel they need to assert their independence, feel like they have a lack of control or simply are hungry, tired or bored. What you need to know! Forget the term “terrible twos”, tantrums can begin as early as 12 months and continue beyond age four.

What can I do about it? Some tactics work better than others, depending on the child. Try these on for size and stick with what works best for your toddler. • Keep your cool and speak softly. Seeing you lose your temper will make it harder for your child to calm down. • Avoid physical punishment. It’s never a good idea, but it’s especially risky at a time when emotions are running high and you’re in danger of losing control. • Move a child who is physically out-of-control (thrashing, hitting) to a safe place. Pick them up firmly (without dragging or pulling). If you’re in a

public place, carry them to the car, or if that’s not practical, hold your child tight to prevent them from causing injury. • Create a diversion. Some kids can be distracted by a favourite activity. • Ignore the drama. If your child gets physical during tantrums, make sure they are safe before you try this approach. Another option - enforce a time-out. Whatever you do — don’t give in to their demands. This only teaches the lesson that tantrums are a means to an end. If you’re out in public and she won’t calm down, consider ending the outing.

Immunisation still needed While improvements in living conditions and medical care have reduced the chance of dying from infectious diseases, healthy children living in ideal conditions remain at risk from infections that can be prevented by vaccination. E.g. Whooping cough. When immunisation coverage declines, vaccine preventable diseases and their complications return. Newborn babies have some antibodies passed on from their mother – this immunity lasts only a short time.

Whooping cough is most severe in babies & young infants under 1 year of age. Babies generally don’t get immunity from their mothers for whooping cough. Severe whooping cough in young infants remains difficult to treat – many of these infants die in intensive care units. Immunisation protects against severe whooping cough disease for up five to ten years. Some fully vaccinated children may still catch whooping cough, but will have much less severe disease. Do immunisations work if you

start them on very young babies? Yes they do work, although not as well as if given when older, but later may be too late. Because of this, a booster vaccination is needed for some vaccines. Is it too much for such a little baby to be immunised at this age? While the number of different diseases children are vaccinated against has increased over the years, the number of antigens given (the proteins that stimulate the immune system to form antibodies) has been hugely reduced through new technology.

...CARING FOR YOUR PRE-SCHOOLER

Planning a birthday party for your pre-schooler Behold the big kid! It must feel like just yesterday that your child was a blanketed bundle in your arms, now they are laughing and joining in with birthday party games. There is so much to celebrate but bear in mind that you can plan an amazing party but still keep it simple and easy to organise. Here are some fun tips: Planning: • Keep it small – young children can be overwhelmed by a crowd of guests, and remember that a number of parents will likely stay for the duration of the party. • Time it right as best as you can - avoid naptime and peak meltdown times, such as late afternoon. Try to wind the party down after a game or two and some cake. • Set up a tot spot - ease any transition jitters by creating a space where the arriving guests can play. A floor full of plastic farm animals, a dress-up area or a large basket of toys can do the trick. • Ask for help - consider asking a family member or friend to assist you with the party. They can organise kids into games and activities, pour juice, and help with cleanup when the guests have all gone home. Fun food: Let them eat cake. Children with cake are like bear cubs with honey. And these ideas make eating it particularly sweet: • Use shapes - use a cookie cutter to make favourite shapes such as a heart, star, or animal from slices of pound cake. Insert a candle, and you’re done. • DIY decorating - set out edible decorations (sprinkles, edible glitter, tubes of decorating icing) along with plain frosted cupcakes so they can customize their own. • Make it healthy - those little ones won’t know the difference, so why not make a cake that incorporates vitamin-rich ingredients like bananas, zucchini, or carrots? Even wholesome muffins with frosting get rave reviews from toddlers.

Celebrities such as Jane Fonda show that despite your age, you can still look amazing with the right style of clothing to suit your figure.

Here is some advice that will help you have fun with fashion as you get older. As we grow older our bodies often change and an important part of the aging process is to continue to celebrate your body, you just have to adapt your style to suit your body shape.

looking good. Pay particular attention to how you wear colours and styles together. Quality over quantity:

Be an individual:

Choose well-made clothes. If this means buying less then so be it. Buy some good quality pieces of clothing which will form the basis of your wardrobe. Your wardrobe should reflect your own regard for yourself. Hold yourself in high esteem and use your clothes along with your grooming to communicate this.

Wearing a great cut of skirt or jean, together with a well-chosen top to flatter your skin tone and body, will set you on your way to

The right fit:

Correctly fitting clothing is everything. Expensive and budget clothing can all look awful if they don’t fit properly so find a brand that gives you the best look. Clothing should gently skim your body, anything oversized will conceal any definition making you look like a sack of potatoes. Anything too tight will cling to your body.

Discovering jewellery with Pamela McCormick

McCormick & Co Jewellers

Antique Jewellery Antique, estate or more recent pre-owned jewellery is always in fashion for some jewellery lovers. This is a favourite time of year for holiday-makers, tourists and locals alike to browse for these rather unique items. I think it goes hand in hand with time to relax when we can really enjoy that hunt for something special.

We have some rather special pieces in store at present – well worth calling in.

Jewellery remakes and remodelling are the order of the day at present! Perhaps it is a sign of the times – however there is a real resurgence in people realising they have genuine jewellery which can be remodelled using all or some of the unused item(s). Choosing this option there is always the opportunity to add a larger diamond or other stone and incorporate both past and present. Where to start and what can be achieved is always the difficult part so come in and discuss your ideas and aspirations with our trained staff and qualified Goldsmith today.

One-carat of diamonds is the optimum size to gain both admiration and envy... and it is within reach! Whether it be a solitaire, a three-stone or four-stone ring, even a good .50pt (½ carat) diamond is very desirable and with a well-cut stone the result is stunning.

'For Women Who Like To Be Admired'

Full lips are considered to be beautiful and while many individuals pay to have collagen injected into their lips to make them fuller, you can improve the state of your lips without paying an exorbitant price. Just get a hold of a few ingredients from your kitchen, and you’re good to go. So follow these short steps and you will be well on your way to having luscious lips. Pucker up! • Brush your lips gently with your toothbrush. After brushing to exfoliate, clean away chaps and plump your lips. • Keep hydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day. • Slick on a dab of honey on the lips, it will act as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air, and keeping your lips soft, plump, and kissably sweet. • Apply some cocoa butter, olive oil or avocado oil on your lips before going to bed.

Comfort and lift Emkay supportive bras come to Blenheim

Feeling comfortable and confident, no matter what bust size you are, is important to all women. How often do you have professional bra fittings done, and when was the last time you purchased yourself a correctly fitting bra? These are questions put to the women of Marlborough by visiting bra designer Kylie Gibbard. Kylie has introduced her Emkay Girl range of supportive bras to Blenheim store Euro Fashions on Maxwell Road, and will personally be in-store on Monday, February 20 to meet with women and offer free fittings. Before Emkay Girl, Kylie was a hard working dairy farmer and as a size 18F bust, she was fed up with wrestling with slipping bra straps and chaffing from ill fitting bras, so she set out to design a comfortable bra for large-busted women. After researching many different designs and sourcing quality products from as far as Europe, Kylie’s bra venture quickly grew to encompass

McDonald wins four golds By Annabelle Latz Sam McDonald struck gold on the inline skating track, and more than once. The 14 year-old Marlborough skater took away four gold medals from the Banked Track Nationals in Blenheim at Waitangi weekend. His favourite race was the 5000 metre points race, which he won in a record time of 9 minutes, 29.96 seconds. The previous record for junior boys was 9 minutes, 36.51 seconds, and had been held since 1993. “It’s about tactics, and picking up as many points as possible over the different laps.” Now it’s all about putting his mind to training for the Oceana competition in April in Timaru. He would like to get more specialist coaching, which he travels to Timaru for. “I need to start getting more technique training, because if you don’t have the technique you don’t have the speed.”

Eric Rush to help raise funds for Harlequins By Annabelle Latz The Harlequins Rugby Club will kick its season off with a strong boot, with a fundraising event next month certain to get people thinking about and involved in club rugby this season. On Saturday March 10 the club will be hosting an Auction Night Fundraiser at the Clubs of Marlborough, with former All Black Eric Rush as guest speaker. “We decided we needed to do a really big fundraiser for the club, to get through the season and encourage more membership,” said Club Chairman Mark Elkington. He said support from local businesses and trust grants have been a great support for the club over the years, but with tough current economical times, it’s harder for everyone. “The auction is about being proactive in raising money for the club to operate effectively and give our players the best opportunity to perform and enjoy their sport.” There is a very strong junior section at the club, with 150 aged 5 to 16, and 50 senior players. Mark said extra funding would be excellent, and Eric Rush would attract a variety of people along to the evening. There are 300 tickets available for the auction fundraiser. “It will be great to get people from the periphery back into this club, and involved in club rugby in general.” Club and fundraising member Greg Marfell said everyone knows who Eric Rush is, and a successful evening could raise $10,000 for the club. Auction items will include rugby paraphernalia such as signed All Black and Crusaders tops, products donated by local businesses, wine, fishing and hunting trips, firewood, and even a bottle of wine of the Prime

Andrew Miller, Greg Marfell and Mark Elkington are sure that the auction evening next month with special guest speaker former All Black Eric Rush will be a great way to raise money for the Harlequins Rugby Club for this season. Minister, John Key’s own JK Pinot Noir. “We still need another couple of big items.” Tickets can be purchased from Blenheim New World, or from the organiser and MC for the evening, Andrew Miller. He said there is a lot of history behind the club, and this evening will remind people of the value of club rugby. “It’s a chance to get people to support club rugby again.” Tickets are $50 each, and can be purchased from Blenheim New World, or by contacting Andrew on 021 2458 142.

Big efforts for Coast to Coast By Annabelle Latz Enjoy this week’s wrap up of the Speights Coast to Coast. Next week the Sun Newspaper will be talking to other Coast to Coast athletes, and detailing more results. Last weekend they biked, paddled and ran from one coast to the other, and Ben Minehan and Paul Bourgeois are thrilled with their effort. The Marlborough men finished fourth overall, and third in the Two-Day Teams competition, taking a total of 12 hours, 52 minutes, across the 243 km stretch of river, roads and bush, to reach Sumner. “There’s no complaints from us, we had a great day,” said Ben. Ben is no beginner when it comes to mountain running, but conceded that the 37km Goat Pass run was the

Wednesday February 15, 2012

toughest he has done. It took him 4 hours, 7 minutes to run and hop the track and boulders, and it was dehydration and cramp that hindered his style. “I got four bad bouts, including full muscle lock where I had to lie on my back with my legs in the air!” He lost a couple of places because of this, but was still the ninth runner to reach Klondyke Corner. He said the support was fantastic, from their support crew and the organisers. “It’s as much about the support crew as it is about the competitors,” he said. Both men were very strong in their own field. “It was quite hard but it was pretty good!” said Paul. He was a dominant figure on the

water, being the third kayak out of the Waimakariri River. “It was a low flow and head wind which made things slow.” He completed the 67km kayak in 4 hours 51 seconds. “It’s always nice to get something like that over and done with!” This was Paul’s fourth competition, and the third time he’s finished in third place. The other placings were with team mate Ben’s wife Mel. Ben and Paul are plan to give it a rest next year, but are very likely to be back amongst it in due course, trying for a step up on the finishing podium. “We’ll put a bit more effort into the road biking for next time,” said Ben. The two cycle legs combined make up 125km of the race.
