Gibbs thankful for local support From Page 1. Feedback has come from far and wide, with one local bed and breakfast owner informing the couple a Japanese guest had commented she “couldn’t believe the restaurant was gone. Heidi says the couple have been stunned by the response from local businesses following the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a malfunction in

a wine fridge. “It’s amazing the amount of emails we’re getting, people are dropping off food and presents, and offering us storage space, she says. “We’ve got a lot of fantastic memories of the restaurant full of people, and people who knew each other. It’s good when that happens - then the restaurant really starts to come alive.

With the building facing demolition, Chris says they are now looking at various sites to set up temporary location. “At the moment, there’s a pause. Assessors are looking at it, landlords are looking at it - it’s a little moment for reflection. “We just want to say an amazing thanks to all friends and customers in the past that have got us to Charred wine bottles sit as a stark reminder of Saturday morning’s fire. where we’ve come.

King acting on fishing concerns By Damian George Kaikoura electorate MP Colin King says he is continuing to meet with Marlborough’s recreational fishers, and relay concerns to Minister of Fisheries Phil Heatley, following protest from fishers about new blue cod fishing regulations. Mr Heatley announced recently the reopening of the Marlborough Sounds blue cod fishery would be accompanied by regulations including a limit of two fish per angler, and a size restriction of between 30cm and 35cm. The fishery is expected to open on April 1. The regulations have drawn an angered response from many Marlborough

fishers, mainly due to the fact that boats based outside Marlborough, or entering from outside the Sounds, will not be subject to the same limitations. Mr King says the decisions made have come about as a result of a comprehensive process involving the Marlborough Sounds Blue Cod Management Group, consultation with the wider Marlborough community, and rigorous scientific research. “I sincerely hope that people who find these new rules “stupid, to quote a recent letter [to The Sun], will try to understand that we are doing all we can to maintain, and perhaps even improve, this precious fishery.

COD RULES: Kaikoura Electorate Colin King is continuing to monitor concerns raised by Marlborough fishers in relation to new regulations concerning the Marlborough Sounds cod fishery.

“The widespread interest and comment generated over recent years has shown just how precious it is to people of all walks of life. He says, once the fishery opens, monitoring and research will continue but, unfortunately, acting in the

best interests of the fishery and its users cannot result in everyone being happy. Mr King says Mr Heatley has been “only too willing to receive and consider feedback from Marlborough fishers. “However, come April 1,

I will be standing alongside the minister to catch my two cod, measuring between 30 and 35cm, and I’m sure I’ll be back before lunch confident there will be fish in the Sounds for others to catch - not just today, but in generations to come.

Toy library asset to community In the lead up to the re-opening of Blenheim’s Salvation Army Community Toy Library yesterday, Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk discovers the delight of working with children’s toys through the eyes of volunteer Nickie Pharland. By Damian George Pig hunting runs in the blood of Okaramio man Trevor McLean’s family. Since taking up the hobby as a 7-year-old 73 years ago, Trevor has seen his sons Ross, Hamish and Gavin also get the bug, as well as his grandson Thomas. After getting word of the three genrations of Marlborough hunters, Maori Television decided to feature them on their weekly show Hunting Aotearoa, and were soon floored by the mens’ enthusiasm. “They couldn’t get over us getting up so early, Trevor says. “We got up at 4am every morning and the camera crew weren’t too keen on it at first. Conditions for filming meant the group’s expedition was not quite as productive as it might have been, with rain teeming down over the two days of hunting at Plunket Stream. However, the five men came away with one boar, a pile of Maori Television clothing and “a lot of laughs. Despite nudging 80 years of age, Trevor is as keen as he has ever been since his father first introduced him to the sport, an outing which he still remembers vividly. “We went to Dangerous Creek, and the dogs went away and got this bore and I did the baby noise, he says. “I reckon I could take you to within 50 metres of where we got that boar. After more than 70 years of hunting, Trevor offers one piece of advice for future hunters looking to nab a pig or two - one which the film crew can vouch for. “The main thing is get out early in the morning so the scent’s fresh. Hunting Aotearoa airs every Thursday night, with the McLean’s episode likely to air in April.

Foundation launches By Celeste Lodewyk A new body known as the Marlborough College Charitable Foundation was yesterday launched with the immediate objective of developing additional funding streams to assist Marlborough Boys’ College to be fully competitive with the best colleges in the country. Among the first to hear of the launch were MBC staff who agreed unanimously with comments such as “the Foundation is fantastic, and “this gives the school hope. To be part of this “new and original foundation, anyone can become a foundation member by joining the Gold & Blue, says John Davis, Foundation trustee. “Nothing is complicated, that is the key to it. “This is a fresh, new start to bring excellence back into the college and now that it has been developed, the support

has been outstanding. The Foundation’s potential growth is limitless. MBC sports co-ordinator Gus Bishell was full of praise for the Foundation and says he will giving his full support. “Sports and culture have really been suffering and our kids are really hurting. With this funding it means there will be more opportunities for them, it’s a breath of fresh air, he says. MBC arts and culture co-ordinator Ngaire Searle says her support was unanimous with that of several other teachers. “I definitely support the Foundation and I am very proud of what it aiming to achieve. At the end of the day if we don’t believe in our boys and do what ever is necessary to help them, who will, she says. Gold & Blue members will each contribute $100 per month for 36 months and all

one on one with the Sun

Elite father-son team Working together as a father-son duo on a very competitive business stage is no small feat for locals Dave and Brendan Gill. Dave is the owner and manager of Grove Road’s newest addition, Elite Tyre and Alignment and is joined by his son Brendan who came on board to help grow the business. By combining their knowledge and passion for the tyre industry, together the Gills are fast striding toward their goal of building a successful and thriving business as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. It has been four months since the Gills waved the green flag at Elite Tyre & Alignment but have found that despite the ripples remaining from the recession’s impact on local businesses, Elite Tyre and Alignment continues to experience growth. “Some may call it risky to open a new business in today’s tough times but with the high level of personal service we provide, we think we have a recession busting business. “The proof is in the pudding, every week is better than the last and we already have repeat customers, Brendan smiles. The business’s growth Brendan and Dave believe is attributed partly to their knowledge and skills, and partly because of their ‘independent’ status. “Our advantage is that Elite Tyre and Alignment is Blenheim’s only truly independent and locally owned store specifically tailored to tyres. “Because we are not aligned or contracted to any tyre brands, we are not a franchise and we don’t have a head office telling us what to sell, we can offer the customer the best tyre to suit their needs across all brands, they say. Dave is known by many in the community from his 17year stint as manager of Blenheim’s Beaurepaires. Born and bred in Blenheim, Dave initially began his working career as an apprentice carpenter but soon swapped his tool belt for steel belts and began work at Fleetway Tire Co’s retread factory, located where Haack Construction and the surrounding buildings currently reside. Dave then made the obligatory move to Australia where he worked for Dunlop Tyres both manufacturing tyres and servicing a variety of vehicles including trucks, 4x4s and even race and rally cars. In 1980 he returned home and began working for Marlborough Transport, before slotting seamlessly back into the team at the local Dunlop Tyre Shop and taking up his management position with Beaurepaires in 1989. 2006 saw Dave leave the company and pursue truck driving for a short time before deciding to get the ball rolling on his long term goal, owning his own tyre business.

“The concept of the business was planned years ago, I was simply waiting for the right opportunity, Dave says. “Many of my old clients made the comment that I needed to get back into the industry. Three months was all it took for the Gill family to make Elite Tyre and Alignment a reality. After growing faster than expected the next priority for Dave was to lure Brendan from his “cushy corporate office position at the head of Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres NZ Ltd in Wellington, which turns out wasn’t very difficult “Dad happened to catch me on a bad day when I was feeling fed up with my desk job, Brendan laughs. “So I jumped at the chance to return home and do some real work. You never truly appreciate Blenheim until you leave. It’s great to be back, I love it here. Brendan’s experience in all areas of the industry has been a real asset to the business, Dave says, covering everything from their computer system, ordering, product knowledge and manual work. “I have been fortunate to have grown up learning most of what I know from Dad. After leaving school and going straight to work at the tyre store with him, I was able to work my way up to management, Brendan says. After spending fouryears in Blenheim, Brendan progressed to a series of tyre store management positions in Christchurch. From there he transferred to Wellington and worked in the Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres corporate office handling everything from stock for 106 stores nationwide, through to redesigning and implementing a computer system for all stores. With their combined industry experience of nearly 50-years, Dave and Brendan say their long term plan is to build and expand the business and to continue offering “great customer service to all Marlburians. “Providing a real local option in a sea of foreign owned tyre stores, Dave says.

Ready, steady‌ get fishing!

By Celeste Lodewyk Havelock is set to be a star attraction this weekend as it plays host to the first “Havelock Fishing Competition. The inaugural event kicks off this Friday at midday and runs through to Sunday where competition winners will be announced as well as the recipient of a $30,000 draw. Iconic kiwi comedian Jon Gadsby will be heading the weekend entertainment line up as well as playing host to Sunday’s prize giving. The competition which is open to nationwide entries has attracted over 150 entries to date and has around $40,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. One of five main sponsors, Bow To Stern owner Richard says the event is shaping up to be a great competition

with entries coming from all over New Zealand. “The competition has had a lot of local business support which is fantastic for Havelock considering we have so many out of town entries. “It’s going to be a busy weekend which is what organisers were hoping for, a great start to this annual event, Richard says. There are five main sponsors of the event including Bow To Stern, Inlet Bakery, Havelock Hotel, Havelock Service Station, Last Resort charters and Tony’s Tackle plus many more local supporting businesses. It has been through these sponsors that many exciting prizes have been donated including accommodation prizes, eating vouchers, product vouchers and fishing

gear such as rods, reels, tackle box, nets etc. “All entrants will go in the draw for a major spot prize, which will be given away at the big weigh in on the Sunday afternoon, so even if you don’t catch a winning fish you could still walk away with a good prize, Richard says. There are several categories for both juniors and adults including everything from snapper to sharks, eels to scallops as well as the fun categories, “Most Unusual Fish and “Unluckiest Boat. The competition will be closely following sustainable fishing practises which include the use of barbless hooks and the exclusion of Blue Cod, which cannot be recreationally fished within the Marlborough Sounds area until October 2012.

Philosophy for primary students By Damian George Philosophical discussions are generally reserved for high school classrooms or University lecture theatres, but one forward-thinking Marlborough primary school is putting paid to that theory. Having introduced the ideals of philosophy to year six to eight students last year, Wairau Valley Primary School has now decided to teach the subject to all its students from this year. Teacher Amy Eberhardt says rather than learning about individual philosophers and theories, students will instead be using the principles of philosophical thinking to engage in class discussions. “Traditionally at school, children are looking to answer a question right for the teacher, she says. “In philosophy, there might not be

one right answer; there may be many right answers. “It’s about teaching them to be confident in their views. Mrs Eberhardt says discussions may be centred around topics such as whether or not it is okay to tell a lie, or what it means to be “beautiful. “But not actually dragging the children down to talking about all the theory - the ideas are underlying every single discussion. “They love it and they’re really natural at it - children are much better thinkers than adults are. The teachers have completed a two-day professional development program in teaching philosophy to children, conducted by Aust ra l ia n educational

consultant Lynne Hinton. Professor Hinton says skills acquired in philosophy have been shown to improve student performance across a range of subjects, and the ability to negotiate has even resulted in less playground bullying. Wairau Valley principal Charlotte Whitlow says the lessons teach children valuable skills which are important for “good citizenship. “They can express opinions, give reasons for their views, build on and challenge others’ ideas, question, make distinctions, make good judgments, explore disagreements respectfully and even change their views, she says.

Sun readers have their say... Q: How have petrol prices affected your driving habits?

Peter Collins Port Underwood

Don’t travel as far now. One trip into town to do jobs. It’s definitely affected us.

I’m always going to need my car, especially if I work late.

We don’t go out in the boat as much that’s for sure.

We don’t drive as much. Walk a lot more. It just costs a fortune to drive.

Yes, it’s affected me. I only use the car if necessary.

Living down Port Underwood we find the price of fuel outrageous. With rego going up on Diesels and then paying Road User Charges, there’s no give or take.

Blue Cod fiasco Dear Ed, Do people realise how unfair to us Marlburians the new rules for the opening of the Sounds blue cod fishery are? For instance if three boats - one from Marlborough’s Havelock, one from Okiwi Bay or Nelson and one from Mana, near Wellington - are fishing at Stephens Passage, then the rules are unfairly stacked against the Havelock boat. The Havelock boat will fish under a two cod bag limit regime, the Nelson one under a three cod limit, the Wellington boat three or more. The Marlborough boat cannot use more than two hooks, the other two can use as many as they like. In turn that means no

set lines for hapuku (groper) or snapper for the Marlborough boat, the other two can use set lines. The Marlborough boat cannot have more than two fish a person on board, the Nelson boat can have six per person, the Wellington boat even more. That’s not fairness. I reckon Marlborough anglers have got to speak out over this. Every Marlborough fisho should join the Marlborough Recreational Fishers for just $15 sub. That seems the only body fighting for Marlborough fishos. Let them do the hard yards for us fishers, but help them to do it with your suppport Neil Wilson

Dear Ed, Frankly, it’s a disgrace that a small group can get a council to approve of this financial help when the majority of the people they represent would appear to oppose it. And why are so many of the new councillors hiding behind silence? So much for a brave new peoples’ voice after the elections. This will turn out to be an ongoing burden on the ratepayer, just like the Millenium Gallery, which was supposed to be self-funding but which most knew never would be. Why won’t they stall proceedings until the people have a chance to speak, why? – because the Mayor and some others know that the struggling ratepayer will oppose it, preferring their money goes to worthwhile projects in the area, not to some minority’s fanciful idea of small town grandeur. If this small group are so adamant it will be a success, they should form a corporation and build and fund it themselves and pocket all the profits. Any bank would fund a project which can prove a successful future. But we all know that won’t happen, so they need to sponge off the ratepayer. Colleen Mace

Why no flood of support? The Editor, When I read of Canvastown resident Maria Marks, who was victim to the same weather front that devastated Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, I found it hard to believe as a New Zealander that my own country could be so indifferent. The outpouring of volunteers from all walks of life rolling up their sleeves, wading in water up

to their waists, pitching in under filthy conditions, helping their neighbours, was witnessing humanity at its finest. Then you read the plight of this poor lady. Form a working group people of Blenheim and, with a smile and a will to help, erase this unfortunate image of the land of Sunshine. A Miami Father.

Artistic and charitable By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim artist Thirza Davies is no stranger to exhibiting her paintings, but with her home surrounded by blooming colour she has been inspired to display her art in the garden. What makes her “Art in the Garden exhibition, running February 5 and 6, even more special is the involvement of local organisation Alzheimers Marlborough which

will benefit from donations. Thirza has pledged 10 percent of her exhibition sales to Alzheimers Marlborough and there will also be a donation box available to the public. The exhibition will take place at Thirza’s home at 14 Dawkins Place (off Snowdens Terrace). Carparking will be available by the Dillon Point Pre-School Centre which is situated behind Thirza’s property

through a gateway. Around 30 paintings will be on display throughout the entire garden, each depicting stunning land and seascapes. The paintings are priced between $75 and $450 and are unique oneoff artworks. Thirza has been painting since her teenage years and has delighted in incorporating New Zealand features into her artwork.

Whakatane donates sun to Blenheim Blenheim may have missed out on the “sunniest town in New Zealand title last year, but promoters from winning town Whakatane were on hand to dish out Marlborough some of their prized sunshine. Eastern Bay of Plenty Economic Development Agency marketing manager Will Stewart [above] was part of a group who made their way from Whakatane to Blenheim handing out one can of “100 per cent pure Whakatane sunshine for each of the 2651 sunshine hours recorded. The trip was not all about gloating though - the group stopped in Rotorua and Cambridge along the way collecting donations for the New Zealand Red Cross Australian Floods Fund. “We thought, with the catastrophe that’s just taken place in Brisbane, it’s a bit wrong for us to be banging on about how sunshiny we are, Mr Stewart says. Blenheim’s Wadsco Motor World donated $200 to the cause once the group arrived in Blenheim, allowing the promoters to give away the remaining cans for free.

Good numbers for Lucky Stiff The Havelock Thetare Company’s latest production is proving popular with two of its first four shows at the Havelock Town Hall sold out. Having opened last Thursday, the company’s rendition of the off-broadway musical Lucky Stiff has also attracted near capacity crowds for its other two performances. It is the first time the company has performed a musical in its 11-year history, with its previous productions being comedies and other plays. Havelock Theatre Company publicity officer Ian Cameron says the show has received excellent reports, and led one audience member to ask the front of house if the actors were part of a New Zealand travelling company. He says only a limited number of tickets remain for the company’s final three performances from Thursday through until Saturday.

THE SEWING SISTAS: Norma Noad, Mavis MacKenzie, Gloria Jones, Mary Doig and Felecity Henderson have been hand-sewing colourful outfits for the Ambrym Utas village in Vanuatu.

Parish ends mission on high note By Celeste Lodewyk The year 2011 is going to be extra special for members of the Wairau Presbyterian Parish as they prepare for a momentous trip to Vanuatu in April. In what has been a five year ‘commitment’ to the South East Ambrym village of Utas in Vanuatu, parish members plan to end their mission on a high note by gifting back a piece of land originally given to them by the village. On the land a new building named the Jimmy Ansen Christian Community Centre has recently been built and is ready to be unveiled to the village. In celebration of the opening of this building as well as the gifting of the land back to the village, a group of 15 people will travel over in April to attend the special occasion. The group is made up of parish members and new youth member Caitlin Simpson, a former Marlborough Girls’ College student.

In preparation for the trip, a group of passionate craftswomen affectionately known as the “Sewing Sistas have been busy creating colourful garments for the village children to wear at the opening. What makes this special for the Sewing Sistas is the knowledge that the children do not have a lot, member Gloria Jones says. “The village is primitive therefore the kids have nothing so to give them clothing handmade by our congregation will make them so happy. “It has been a labour of love for us, something enjoyable and fun to do while putting our sewing skills to good use, she said. The “Sewing Sistas will be meeting weekly to continue future sewing projects and for fellowship. Anyone interested in joining can contact Gloria Jones on 5777 691.

Being young, you always want to be out there. With such a raft of experience in the Crusaders squad, Wheeler’s ability to play three positions -lock, blindside flanker and No 8 - may count in his favour when it comes to team selection. “Hopefully - you just never know with injuries and stuff like that but there’s so many capable guys, there’s so much competition.

Local stock car driver Sam Thompson is all smiles after his recent trophy win.

By Celeste Lodewyk The spotlight on our local speedway drivers has certainly been noticed from all over the country as Eastern States makes an early mark on the 2011 racing year. The New Year kicked off with the Basis NZ Stock Car Title held January 6, 7 and 8 which saw the national event hosted by Blenheim for the first time. Local names such as the Alexander brothers, Tim and Scott made the qualifying lists while the likes of Ralph Gillespie, Sam and Zak Thompson, Ricco Gray, Gavin Marshall, Steve Biddulph and Daryl MacDonald stamped their mark on the visiting stock cars. Following the title, a group of Eastern States drivers followed onto the Austin Transport NZ Stock Car GP held in Nelson on January 11 and 12. One of these drivers was Ricco

Gray who put on an impressive display but narrowly missed out by one point on going into the finals. Further down the island saw the AmPro Tools Stock Car Hoopla event held in Christchurch on January 14 and 15 attracted many of the countries top drivers. There local driver Sam Thompson made an incredible finish after winning first place in the final race. After placing 11th in most of the qualifying heats, Sam began at the back of the pack in the final race. Within 20 laps Sam managed to fight his way to the front with only petrol fumes to spare. “It was so funny because I had no idea that I had finished first place and when I went to restart the car at the end of the race, I was out of gas, he laughs. Sam’s brother Zak (Zak Attack) also enjoyed a spot in the lime-

light after winning the ‘Stirrer’s Award’. At the other end of the country, Super Saloon driver Paddy North has had a great start to the year after winning first place at the annual Boxing Day Remembrance Champs in Christchurch. This success was closely followed by another 3rd place podium finish at the NZ Super Saloon GP held in Tauranga on January 1. Paddy then went on to battle it out for sixth place in the NZ Super Saloon Championship held in Napier on January 14 and 15. In the qualifying races, Paddy produced 18th, 5th and 2nd placings before going on to win 5th place in the final race. Judging by Eastern States success to date, the club can be confident of adding more local names to national prize list before the season ends in April.
