The Blenheim Sun will publish twice weekly starting on Friday March 9. Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside see this as an exciting time, to provide Marlborough readers with a second edition as well as the popular Wednesday paper. Advertising support has continued to grow for the Blenheim Sun over the last 12 months and the demand from advertisers for a Friday paper has been the driving force to go twice weekly.

Les says the encouragement and support from major advertisers is just fantastic, particularly in this economic climate. However he believes the Marlborough public/ readers who have continued to support the Sun paper is the main reason why it is so successful for advertisers. “We believe this move also shows our confidence in the region,” says Les. Last week the ABC Audit Bureau of NZ re-

leased its yearly newspaper circulation numbers. “The Sun is now the number one circulated newspaper in the region with 18701 copies, this compared to the Marlborough Express 8077 ANC” “The Express suffered another sizable decrease in circulation, similar to last year,” says Les. “The new Friday Sun edition will be similar to Wednesday, but with a few surprises,” he says.

By Les Whiteside Les Hope, who died aged 72 on February 14, had a love for business, racing, rugby, a beer and family. Les was born 4th May 1939 and grew up in South St Blenheim, the youngest boy of eleven siblings. He represented Marlborough at rugby and cricket as a youngster. He left school at 15 years old to work in a butchery shop owned by Don Hall and later managed another butchery shop for Don Hall in Beaver Rd. Les and his brother Bluey saw big money was to be made in shearing, he worked for Bluey initially and then travelled down to central Otago following the shearing gangs. During the off season he would work at the meat works in Gore. It was at this time he met his wife to be Gaynor, in Gore. Not long after meeting Gaynor, Les received a phone call from his father in Blenheim telling him a butchery business was for sale. That phone call would bring him back to Blenheim with Gaynor to purchase Dick Hodgkins butchery in Queen St. Les and Gaynor were married 30 March 1964, their three children followed, Elizabeth, Anna-Louise and Stephen. Les decided he would build a new butchery shop in Market St. The first in Blenheim with carpet on the floor. This business flourished, with big meat contracts to the hospital, Woodbourne airbase and Homestyle Bakery. (Homestyle making meat pies for the South Island market). Les soon bought 10 acres in Mid-

In 1981 Les bought the Junction Hotel at Spring Creek from Jack Manderson, (he sold the Market St butchery to one of his competitors). Les and Gaynor launched the Ferryman Restaurant where he introduced his new chef Piero Rocco to Marlborough. In those days Les and his bar staff would be dressed in white shirt with tie and jacket. Les sold the Junction to Peter and Annie Bishell. He then tried his hand at cherry orchard farming, buying a block in Middle Renwick Rd. He ran the packhouse and one day while driving a forklift he had a very lucky escape. Les managed to get himself jammed between the forklift and some pallets. If it wasn’t for the quick reactions of a young schoolboy (Nick Cole) hearing Les’s shouts for help he would have had a serious accident. It may have been at this time Les decided this may not be his chosen vocation. He developed the subdivision Gaylee’s Place (named after les and his wife) off Redwood St in 1989. During 1992 Les’s enterpreneur skills were to the fore when he saw

the old Newmans bus terminal on Grove Rd was for sale. Together with Maurice McQuillan the Grove Rd publican they bought the property and launched Super Liquor. That was August 1992. After nearly twenty years, the Super Liquor business has been a tremendous part of Les’s life. The only tragedy was that Les’s wife Gaynor couldn’t enjoy this part of Les’s life, Gaynor passed away aged 45 years, now some 24 years ago. Les loved horses, he grew up with them and walked them through town as a teenager to the races for his father. His brother Bluey raced the talented freelegged pacer Robalan during the 1970’s. Les raced a number of horses, his first, a galloper called Persian Script. But it was standardbreds he enjoyed most, with his nephew Greg Hope training, winners including Kenzo (1win) Ima Franco (2w), Gaylee BB (3w) with Lyn McQuillan, Miami Rocket(3w) and recently Gaylees Delight (2w), who ran second on the day of Les’s funeral. Les is survived by his daughters Liz and Anna, son Stephen and their families. “A life well lived”

Rebel Sport should be opening its doors in Blenheim before Labour Weekend, October. It will be developed next to Briscoes on Main St, where the Love Affair Café and Wine Bar has recently terminated business. Managing Director of Briscoe Group Rod Duke said building should take 16 to 20 weeks, and can commence once a building consent has been approved by Marlborough District Council. The owner of the 1049sq m site is Twin Oaks Vineyard. “There is no question that there is a demand for Rebel Sport in the town,” said Rod.

rise in serious falls Serious falls accounted for six of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s (NMDHB) eight Serious and Sentinel Events for the year 2010/11. Three of these eight patients died. A sentinel event is a reportable event that signals the need for immediate investigation and response. This was part of 26,733 admissions, 45,592 Emergency Department visits, and 144,848 outpatient appointments. Of this total, 86 people died during admission or shortly afterwards, though not necessarily as a result of the event. In 2009/2010, 318 comparable sentinel or serious events were reported. The figures show 195 falls were reported as events in 2010/11, up from 130 falls reported for the previous year.

Murray and Mary Jobberns have been running Manhatten Cafe for nearly 23 years, and assure customers they are here to stay for at least a while longer.

Manhatten to stay open By Annabelle Latz The Manhatten Café doors are staying open. Mary and Murray Jobberns have been the faces behind the counter for the past 23 years, and are happy to stay put for the time being. “It’s been talked about quite openly since before Christmas that we may go,” said Mary. Farmers will be expanding into empty spaces in Centre Point Mall. “So many people have been in and said ‘I hope you are not moving,’ or ‘The old Manhatten isn’t going is it?’” said Mary. With extended supermarket hours and petrol stations having food-to-go, there has not been the demand for eateries like Manhatten Café that there once was. “These changes have had a huge

impact on this end of town,” said Mary. Although there is more choice for eateries in Blenheim now, Mary said there has always been a strong base of customers who have kept their loyalties with Manhatten Café. “I suppose some people are dying off, that’s the thing when you have been here for so long, so we are onto the next generation.” She said at the moment Farmers is dysfunctional and because it is such a popular store it needs to flow better. “It will definitely be good for Blenheim.” Mary believes malls like Centre Point are not suitable for towns like Blenheim because they are used more as covered

walkways to get to main shopping streets. “The malls are not vibrant like in big cities.” Murray said changes on Blenheim’s streets work in cycles. “The Strand was completely empty when we came here in 1970,” he said. He said no definite decision has been made regarding their future plans. “I don’t think it’s all over yet. Developers want X-amount of dollars for properties, so things are still up in the air.” Mary said it’s just a matter of staying positive, because the process is a complicated one. “It’s all individual business owners here, so it’s a huge puzzle to put together.”

Demolition improves driver safety Story by Annabelle Latz Photos by Les Whiteside The old Butter Factory near Blenheim has been demolished, in a move to improve driver vision at the corner. Plans for further improvements to this corner are in a draft regional transport plan, and will to go the regional transport committee with a decision being made on March 2 for a start date. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said the long term plan was to ease the curve and create a right-turn bay for south-bound traffic turning into Alabama Rd off the state highway. And to create enough space for vehicles to wait safely clear of the railway line when moving onto the state highway from Alabama Rd. The project comes with an estimated cost of $700,000. “It will further enhance safety adding to what we have already done. The hedge and fence around the old butter factory have also been dismantled, improving driver vision. The NZ Transport Agency bought the site in late 2010 so that, once national funding was allocated, the corner could be realigned. Marlborough Roads has about 30 projects planned for improving road safety in the district.

Cowboys in the community Story and photo by Annabelle Latz The Tua Marina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day is as much about the family and community as it is about the riders, says Grant Sheridan. This is his first year as President for the Tua Marina rodeo club, and is preparing for this Sunday morning on Blind Creek Rd, where there will be horses, bulls, vintage machinery and cars, machine displays, live music, and sheep riding. “The sheep riding is ever popular, people never forget it,” laughed Grant, referring to the class restricted to competitors under three stone. The success of the day relies on the community working together, and at Tua Marina they are very good at it. “If everyone does a little bit, it’s easy and the job gets done quickly.” This is the 63rd rodeo at Tua Marina, a non-points competition but one that still draws the numbers. “It’s the end of the season for a lot of the competitors, so it’s a day to enjoy.

And it’s about the community, it’s about the school, it’s about the residents.” Between $3000 and $5000 is raised for Tua Marina School each year, with any extra money going to the Resident’s Association and the Vintage Car Club. Grant was about eight years old when he rode his first calf, progressively working up to bulls and bare back riding “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. My son entered me this weekend and I told him he’d look silly if I beat him, but I don’t think there’s much chance of me doing that!” His son Robert, 25 is riding the Open and Division Two bulls, Saddle Bronc and Bare Back classes, while his daughter Jacinta, 23, is riding in the Division Two bull class. “She’s catching a plane back to London after that, I hope she doesn’t get injured!” First year rodeo rider Will Wilding from the Awatere Valley will also be featuring this weekend in the bull riding.

He has recently won the Dectomax Young Cowboy of the Year for the South Island. As well as purse prizes, some winners also receive a belt buckle, in a combined points prize from last weekend’s Reefton rodeo. There will be 12 horses featuring from Reefton and Tua Marina. The 55 bulls, ranging from 500kg to 650kg, will come from The Wairau Valley. All stock must be vetted before they can be used in competition. “Animal welfare is a huge part of rodeo, it always has been. People involved in rodeo are stock people.” Grant said he loved motocross riding during his teen years, but nothing surpasses rodeo. “There is no adrenalin-charged feeling like getting strapped onto the back of a 600kg animal, it gets the heart pumping. Even after a fall, you walk out the pen with a huge grin on your face.”

The Tua Marina rodeo on this weekend is a day boasting huge community focus, and club president Grant Sheridan says a bit of sunshine will be a bonus.

Owners emphasise café will remain Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Have no fear café lovers for Fab Foods Café and Catering is here to stay! Since it was announced last year that the Redwood Garden Centre would be demolished as part of the planned Countdown development, customers have continued to express concern for the café’s future. But the café is here to stay, says Fab Foods Care and Catering manager Danielle Atkinson.

“We just want to clarify to the public that the café and outdoor area will remain intact, if anything we will be more accessible,” she says. The only plans that the café has is to build additional fencing and introduce regular “fun days”. “There will be lots going on so people can expect plenty of new things. “But the same great food and service will remain the same,” Danielle says.

Fab Foods Café and Catering is owned by Brian and Jenny Alexander and employs around 12 staff members. The Garden Centre will be demolished and the space will be converted into a car parking area for the new 3300 square metre Countdown supermarket which will be built at the corner of Weld Street and Alabama Road. Plans for the current supermarket building will see it converted into retail space.

ANZAC Day parade at Blenheim School Story and photo by Annabelle Latz The ANZAC parade will be held at Blenheim School this year. Due to earthquake risks, the usual clock tower site in Seymour Square was deemed too dangerous for this year’s parade on April 25. A month ago Marlborough RSA was advised by Marlborough District Council it would have to reassess the parade location. Peter Slape is Vice President, and Welfare Officer, who arranges all ceremonial parades. He said if there were lots of people in Seymour Square and an earthquake hit, it would be impossible for everyone to reach safety. “Blenheim School is more than happy to accommodate us.” The parade will march from Clubs of Marlborough on Alfred St to the school on the corner of Alfred

and Hutcheson St, which therefore involves much less road closure work compared to parades based at Seymour Square where many streets need to be closed. Peter said road closures used minimal funding from the council, and most people involved in the parade do so on a voluntary basis. “There were lots of alternative sites for the parade, but Blenheim School was the simplest.” With plenty of field space, and a raised area in front of the school for those taking part in the parade, all that needs to be arranged are details like power access for the PA system. “Everything is just absolutely perfect. We will be going back to Seymour Square, but in the meantime we will have the perfect spot.” The parade will be on Wednesday April 25, at 11am.

A year after Christchurch’s February 22, 2011 By Annabelle Latz There will be a place for reflection, sharing precious moments, and perhaps even having a laugh. In memory of February 22, 2011, when Christchurch city crumbled after the earthquake, a house in Redwoodtown has its doors open. Jenny Goss and Jim Fox, who started The Shaky Shifters group, are inviting anyone who wants to share laughs and sorrows to come to their house for lunch today. Shaky Shifters is a group for people of all ages, interests and backgrounds

who now call Blenheim home after Christchurch’s earthquake. “We’ll crank up the Barbie about midday, and people can just bring along something for it,” said Jim. Jenny said it will be an afternoon for laughs and good times, as much as getting together for the sadness of the occasion. “There are some people who don’t even want to think about the day.” She said their door is open for anyone at 5 Buick St, Redwoodtown, to either just come along today, or become a regular group member.

The magical brew

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz He could be excused for not shaving before work the last couple of days, with 5am starts and a solid 12-hour day at least. But when you’re as passionate about your job as David Nicholls, head brewer at Moa Breweries is, long days with early starts are irrelevant. In three words, his job is about ‘attention to detail.’ “And you have got to have fun.” Making craft beer is about following a beer making procedure, but not being afraid to challenge it, to make something a bit different that tastes good.” “Sometimes I feel like a chef, a baker, a scientist, and a cook.” Multi-tasking is just part of the job, and so is having the odd mistake. I always look at it as a journey, and people’s pallets evolve. So the beer can become more and more flavoursome. Fruity is where we are at the moment, but I think the next big thing will be sour beer.” For Moa beer, the barley comes from Nelson, and the hops from Motueka. Most of the malt comes from various places around New Zealand, although some comes from abroad. “Life is good here, so why go anywhere else?”

Kmart would be great, along with Dotti, Diva, Equip and the Shoe Clinic.

No more, we have enough.

We need a mall, they have everything. Need more baby clothing shops.

Max, it needs to be in every town. And Jacqui E.

Max has to be my favorite shop, I would love to see that here. Jacqui E would be great too.

Can’t wait for Pak N Sav. We don’t need anymore shops.

Re: Expensive Ride Dear Ed, I belong to Safe Link, wear a medical alarm around my neck and when I am taken away in an ambulance I am billed but I send the account to Safe Link who pay St John’s Ambulance. Every month a fee is taken from my

bank account by WINZ to pay Safe Link but WINZ also puts it back into my account – sounds silly but that is how it works. There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding ambulances and costs. Perhaps an article could clear this up. Jeannette.

Dear Ed, Re: The recent market day in town and the discussion on the fact that it wasn’t as busy as usual. I’m sure that was correct and no doubt the dull weather did play a part in that. But also I think the lack of publicity would certainly have added to the lower numbers. Organisers - please advertise to let the public know it’s on! I didn’t know until I stumbled across it that day by chance. This goes for other events in the region too. They all need far more promotion. It’s too late after the event!

The Wine Festival numbers also appeared to be down. Once again the cold day having some part to play in this I’m sure. But still a great event and well organised. Music not as good as usual for me personally. Needed something more “lively” at the end to get everyone moving, particularly being a cooler day. But top marks to all the food stalls, there was such alot on offer and all delicious. Gold star to the Potato Rosti makers - they were absolutely divine! Grace

His village has been supplied with proper toilets and a drinking well. “Children as young as six and seven years old had to walk 10 kilometres to get clean water every morning,” said one of the sausage sizzle organisers, 10 year-old Whitney Leach. Dharlea Knight, 11, who is also in charge of the Friday sausage sizzles, is curious about village life in Cambodia. “I would like to see what it’s like, comparing here to there.” The target amount to fundraise for World Vision each year is $450, but the school always goes well beyond this amount. Last week they handed over a cheque for $500 to Dhara Barot from World Vision.

The disco is always a popular event, and Emily Morgan, 11, has lots of fun putting up the decorations. “It’s changing someone’s life when we organise a disco.” Levi Beech, 11, is the other disco organiser. He said it would teach everyone a lesson to go to Putheavy’s village, and people here would realise how fortunate they are and not complain about things as much. “It is awesome to be able to help.” Dhara from World Vision said it was wonderful to see the children asking so many questions, and being so aware of people’s differences. “They are so curious to know things, and it’s amazing how much they do know.”

The G.J. Gardner Homes Marlborough team has built a solid reputation based on quality workmanship and excellent service since it first opened its doors in 2002. Part of a nationwide group, G.J. Gardner Marlborough is independently owned and operated by Mike and Dianna Wightwick and Brian Watt, who have been involved in the building industry for more than 20 years. “Both Mike and I entered the industry after leaving school and have been involved in all areas from tools and

roofing right through to the design and building stage, so between us we have a wealth of knowledge,” Brian says. Supported by their team, G.J. Gardner Marlborough has won a number of prestigious awards over the years both nationally and locally. “All our staff are specialised in their areas and have the skills to take care of every detail, right from the planning stage through to the landscaping. This takes the pressure off the client and makes the whole experience enjoyable,” Brian says. G.J. Gardner Marlborough takes the worry out of building by providing a fixed contract price and pre-agreed construction time, and for added peace of mind all work carried out is backed by G.J. Gardner’s 5 Star Performance Warranty. “Call in for a coffee and informal chat and find out how G.J. Gardner Marlborough can build that dream home for you.”

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz There is always one special boy in mind for Redwoodtown School when they organise sausage sizzles and school discos. This is the ninth year the school has worked alongside World Vision to sponsor one particular child in Cambodia. His name is Putheavy Rouen, and he is lives in a small village called Samrong Tong. Back here at Redwoodtown School, thousands of sausages have been sizzled on the school barbeque at most Friday lunchtimes, and hundreds of songs have been danced to, to raise at least $800 most years to help their far away friend Putheavy, who is now 16 years old. He has received school books, a bike, and

Home renovation presents the unique opportunity for home owners to maximise the use of the property. One way is by providing storage areas for large assets such as cars, boats, motorcycles and other big vehicles that cannot be left in the open, particularly for security reasons. Additional storage space can also be utilised for odds and ends, excess furniture and bulky items which cannot be stored inside the house. Here are some useful tips when considering the addition of a garage as well as advice on how to maximise the space: • A detached garage makes sense if infrequently used equipment, devices and bulky assets have to be stored. • A garage can also be added to serve as an office and used to work from home. • Garages are the perfect workshops for people fond of carpentry, painting or other creative activities and needing peace and quiet to work. • A glass door is a cheaper option and adds visibility from the outside, besides making the garage bright and naturally laminated during daytime. • Like all other renovation exercises, once the thought of a garage addition becomes clear, budgeting needs to be worked out, before the thought can be transformed into a real structure. • A garage, be it attached or detached,

can be constructed to match the exterior of the house; i.e The same brick type and colour. • A secure locking system must be installed since the garage is another access point for the home. • While constructing, make sure that shelves are added on the walls, and there is space left on all sides even after a big car gets parked. As families grow, so do

the material assets and there is always a shortage of storage space. • Insulating the walls of the garage will make it warm and cozy. Adding a garage not only provides additional working and storage space, it also enhances the value of the property and makes the home complete. So even if it costs some money, it is an investment that will yield returns.

• Don’t bite off more than you can chew. For a good first experience of renovating, try doing up a dated property rather than a wreck. A new kitchen, bathroom, central heating, carpets and re-decoration will miraculously transform something dark and decrepit into a ‘des res’. • When employing tradesmen decide exactly what work you want to undertake before asking for any quotations. • A project manager is a good option to consider. They will liaise with the builder and ensure work is carried out to a specification. • Never expect the scheduled timescales. The buying and the restoring may not always go as planned. • Seek as much advice as possible, especially from people who’ve done it before.

Since the bedroom is the place where you come to relax, it’s a good idea to use colour schemes that are soothing and relaxing. Bolder shades can be used if the room is a large one, however is your bedroom space is small, lighter shades will make the place look open and larger. Remember when selecting a paint colour, check if it matches with bedroom features such as the bed, the closet and so on. Sometimes it is easy to get carried away and take up a totally new colour which can be great to look at, but in reality it may not blend well with the existing things in the room.

The kitchen is the place where you would be spending time cooking, lunching or dining with your family. The kind of paint colours that you choose for you kitchen should reflect an environment that is happy and energized, all the while having a positive effect. If you want to bring out the best colour effect in your kitchen decorating, choosing complementary colours could be a good option. Such colours look really great because of their pairing and you can see such an interesting shade coming out of them.

When choosing bathroom painting colours, it’s a good idea to have a colour that’s pale because such colours are really soothing. There are so many examples of bold colours being used in bathroom walls such as wine colour or dark blue or dark brown, but sometimes such colours do not blend well with bathroom fixtures that are in white or a mild shade. Bathroom colour selection should always be pleasant and reflect the coolness of the porcelain fixtures placed in it.

Moss is a plant which is often found on the roof, and despite people thinking it has died during summer, once the rain comes the moss will swell up and appear to come out of nowhere. Moss grows steadily in size when the weather allows and needs sunlight, growing medium and water to grow. There are many reasons why you should have moss removed from the roof, but before arming yourself with a scraper and broom, call in the professionals to treat and kill the moss.

Breathe wise

BREATHING CLINIC and PAIN RELIEF CLINIC BREATHING CLINIC MARLBOROUGH - BC O2CO2 is a computer analysis showing imbalances in an individual’s breathing pattern. Bad breathing behaviour can reduce oxygen concentration by 40%, this includes the heart and brain. This may be the reason behind the body not healing, even though all measures have been taken to improve health. Available to anyone including children, also to enhance athletic performance.

Breathing Therapy 198104

PAIN RELIEF CLINIC MARLBOROUGH - SCENAR is a medical device that relieves pain on the spot. It works with electrical activity on the nervous system. Treatment will never go longer than three months if needed but usually one to three treatments will suffice.

By Eva McArtney O2CO2 checks your body’s rhythm through energy | vitality | action breathing, as breathing is a reflection of this rhythm. It is when we lose this rhythm that things start to go awry. As life has its way of stressing us, the most inevitable reaction for it is to clamp up and alter its breathing pattern to follow a rapid heart rate. This is a normal response for the body to protect itself in a ‘fight or flight’ situation and the Christchurch people would be well aware of this protective mechanism with the continual and onBAY AUDIOLOGY going earthquakes they BAY AUDIOLOGYOFFERS: BLENHEIM OFFERS:have been suffering. A bad habit can form right under your nose and if you don’t have the understanding or tools to help yourself, a vicious cycle may imprint itself right down to a cellular level or the body may even respond by having a

BLENHEIM

heart attack or stroke. This ‘habit’ has to be altered consciously at the brain stem or it may remain. Stress does not have to come to us via an earthquake, it can be from last week in the office, feeling pressured, feelings of anger or rejection, or even trauma from childhood that just never seemed to go away.

“We may take health for granted but it can let us down in a moment.” Over-breathing is an insidious, dangerous and most unrecognised behaviour. The measurement of carbon dioxide relates to oxygen being utilised in the body and seeing it gives a better understanding. It is all to do with gas exchange in the alveoli of the lungs. With breath by breath movement on the screen and the help of the therapist, you are able to look at and understand the essential breath that keeps you alive every moment of every day.

Quality breathing definitely gives a better quality of life. CAUTION: This does not mean deep breathe (importantly). This can be dangerous if you already have an irregularity and people do tend to generalise when it comes to breathing, giving advice they may not really understand. We are very fortunate in Marlborough to have this equipment for everyday people, being the only one in New Zealand. Those who have used the information have always had remarkable results, including asthmatics, COPD clients and even athletes for the extra edge. Great health can be had from just breathing well. Awareness and prevention is the key. And then knowing what to do! Half hour appointments are usually $45 per person but there will be a two hour informative group workshop held next Tuesday, February 28 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at a cost of $40. Venue is at the Body/ Mind Studio, EVA, 3 Delta Drive, Renwick. Register by phoning 5729180. If you bring someone - fee will be $35.

Water and your health H20 - two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. This substance also known as water, is one of the most essential elements to health and is so important that your body actually has a specific drought management system in place to prevent dehydration and ensure your survival. Water might be everywhere, but one must never take it for granted. Water makes up more than two thirds of human body weight, and without water, we would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%.

Water facts:

A mere 2% drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on smaller print. Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue. Water is important to the mechanics of the human

Water serves as a lubricant. Water forms the base for saliva. Water forms the fluids that surround the joints. Jenny McClelland Blenheim hairdresser Jenny McClelland is happy to announce she has joined the D’Tanglz Hair and Beauty team in Redwoodtown. With nine years industry experience Jenny first began her career as an apprentice in Blenheim and went on to become fully qualified nearly three years ago. Renting a chair and operating a newly furbished beauty room, Jenny joined the D’Tanglz team one week ago and is very excited for what lies ahead. “I work within the business owned by Trac-

ey Jones who opened D’Tanglz last month. It’s an exciting new venture and I am really looking forward to meeting new clients,” she says. Previously Jenny was working in a central Blenheim salon and is now welcoming past and existing clients to call in and experience what the new salon has to offer. “The salon looks great and clients really enjoy what we have to offer,” she says. Tania McConway Teaching people to dress confidently and to their unique style is an important area of Tania McConway’s business, Defining Style. Defining Style was born from a passion for the fashion industry and desire to help men and women “live their style with confidence”. One year ago Tania sold her previous sewing store business and went into partnership with her sister at Cerise Home and Giftware. With a background in fashion and dressmaking Tania decided to branch out further and travelled to Auckland where she spent a month train-

ing with Colour Me Beautiful, an internationally recognised name in colour, style and image. “The woman who trained me taught me about colours, body style, personal shopping, men and corporate fashion which has proved invaluable with my own business,” she says. Being mobile, Tania visits clients and spends one on one time helping them to develop styles that fit their lifestyles and budgets. “It’s not about changing how you dress, its about building the confidence to dress to your own style that best suits your body, and being a professional dress maker helps when it comes to altering existing clothing,” she says. From school formals and weddings through to everyday style, contact Tania today to find out what she can do for you.

it has good traffic flow, a nice atmosphere and loads of great amenities so it’s been a dream come true to finally be here. “The ambience in the salon is really buzzing and we have had plenty of people pop in to have a look and pass on their positive feedback,” she says. D’Tanglz is now a Redken salon and clients can enjoy the full range of hair care products available in store. In addition, the salon also boasts of a newly furbished beauty room where clients can unwind and enjoy being pampered. “Come on in and have a look around the salon and meet our wonderful ladies, including Janice who will be staying on to join the new team,” Tracey says.

Pauline Friend “We love what we do and we are here to deliver,” says Stonewood Homes Marlborough new build consultant Pauline Friend. With her artistic flair and enthusiasm for meeting new people, Pauline has enjoyed her role since joining the Stonewood Homes team in January. “I have been in the building industry for three years in Marlborough and I am thrilled to be part of such a fantastic team,” she says. Prior to coming to Marlborough Pauline lived in Queenstown for 18 years where she worked

in both photography and sales. Having artistry and sales skills have benefited her greatly when helping clients to design and build their new homes. “The transition from photography to building came easily to me as I am able to visualise what people want in their designs, and coming from a sales background I am a great believer in the importance of listening to what clients want,” Pauline says. “As someone who has recently finished building a new home, I also understand the journey you go through and I look forward to being part of building your dream home.” To find out more about what Stonewood Homes can do for you call in and meet with Pauline or make a time for her to come visit you.

As manager of Hendersons Ltd situated on Grove Road in Blenheim, Emily enjoys the variety that the job offers. “This is a really fun industry to be part of, especially the fishing and leisure side of it and the reason why I took up this position,” she says. Nadia Crighton BNC Viticulture Contracting has been facilitating the vineyard sector around Marlborough with a series of tractor services. Behind the ream of tractors and grease is Nadia Crighton, Director of BNC Viticulture Contracting Ltd. Alongside her husband Brad she is proud to run “the backend of the business”. “BNC actually stands for Brad and Nadia Crighton,” she says. “Not very creative considering my first talent is writing and journalism”. Nadia and Brad set up business around six years

Business

ago when deciding that there was a need to improve the quality of work on the family vineyard. The idea grew and BNC Viticulture Contracting was born. Nadia and Brad now help other vineyard managers, and owners to save money while providing a high-quality, reliable service. “The business is growing wonderfully,” she says. “It’s very busy, but just great that our family has been able to build something like this, I’m very proud.” “Our eldest daughter is only five but is adamant she wants to drive tractors one day. We’ve promised her a custom pink John Deer,” she laughs. As an active mum of three and a professional journalist this tight-knit family is busy building a home-grown Marlborough business. “We want to grow old in this lovely town and starting our own business was the simple way to ensure we are here for generations to come.”

Being the first point of contact with clients is an important role, says Marlborough Plumbing and Heating office manager Sue Singleton. The Blenheim based business has been providing plumbing and heating services to the Marlborough region since 2000, and supporting owner Rob Marshall, Sue ensures the smooth running of the office. “What I enjoy most is the face to face contact with clients. This is really important as people don’t always choose a service provider based on price, it’s about the service

they receive which we work very hard to provide,” she says. Prior to coming to Marlborough two years ago, Sue was a business owner in Queenstown. For seven years she owned and operated a five star apartment complex and later went on to be part of the management team which set up the luxury Rees Apartment Hotel. After a change of career, Sue managed a fashion store for New Zealand designer Andrea Moore before moving to Blenheim. At Marlborough Plumbing and Heating Sue welcomes enquires from new and existing clients for everything from plumbing services, solar heating, heating and ventilation, through to emergency repairs and maintenance services. “Law is a privileged profession to be in and we are proud to be part of a reputable Marlborough firm.” These are the words of Wain and Naysmith director Audrey Seaton and associate Rosemary Rutherford.

Prior to merging with Wain and Naysmith in October last year, Audrey was in practice with Andrew Townshend until he retired in 2009. As the sole practitioner the practice grew too busy for Audrey alone and the decision was made to merge with Wain and Naysmith. “This way I could concentrate more on my clients rather than the administration,” Audrey says. Four months on, Audrey has enjoyed the support of her col-

leagues and continues to specialise in property, business and relationship property law. Associate Rosemary Rutherford has practiced family law for more than 25 years and has been with the firm for eight years. It is the reward of being able to help people that gives Rosemary a sense of satisfaction when dealing with a wide range of issues. “Working in family law brings you in contact with many types of people. It’s very rewarding,” she says.

Brigit and husband Jason first began their earthworks business 17 years ago and as work demand grew, Brigit’s role has continued to evolve. “Originally Jason started out with a truck and digger and no expectations, but gradually the business grew and we purchased more equipment and began hiring employees. “At the time I was working as a registered nurse but as the business grew I switched focus to our

Lorraine Barrett The satisfaction of matching buyers with homes they love is what drives independent real estate agent Lorraine Barrett. Lorraine joined the Mark Stevenson First National team last month after working for more than 12 years as a buyer’s agent. She began her career in Auckland working with some “high flyers” until she relocated to Blenheim eight and a half years ago. With a young family, she continued to work as a buyer’s agent until last month when she decided to branch out and work independently.

“I am thrilled to be part of the First National team again. For a small team they certainly hold their own in this market and they provide a real family orientated team environment, and I am very happy to be part of this,” she says. “When selling your home it takes a great deal of local market knowledge, communication and people skills,” Lorraine says. “If you are looking for an appraisal I am happy to visit your home at no obligation and give you my best advice on what the market is doing, what the property would be worth and the best way to market it. “Simply contact me today and I will walk you through each step of the way,” she says.

This has also enabled Brigit to balance work with her busy family life. “It takes a lot of discipline working from home but at the same time it’s nice to be available for our three young children, it’s important to have balance between work and family,” she says. Bryant Earthworks specialises in forestry roading and more recently vineyard development and bridge building for the farming industry. The business also employs a small roadline forestry crew as well as owning a quarry in Canvastown, supplying different gravel materials. “We have a crew of six in forestry and 16 in earthworks, and it’s these guys who have put in the big hours to help us get to where we are now,” Brigit says.

Peter Yealands, a New Zealand entrepreneur With a career spanning 50 years, and across multiple industries, Peter Yealands could be described as one of New Zealand’s most successful entrepreneurs. The story of his life and business endeavours has been captured in a new book. ‘A bloke for all seasons: The Peter Yealands Story’ is written by first-time Marlborough author Tom Percy and provides an in-depth look into the life of Peter Yealands and his contribution to the New Zealand aquaculture, deer farming, forestry and wine industries. Described by the author as a ‘true maverick’, Peter Yealands says the book is an honest and frank description of his life to date. He was a pioneer in the commercial New Zealand

Greenshell Mussel industry and in 1975 was issued New Zealand’s first marine farming license. In the mid1980’s Peter established one of New Zealand’s most successful deer farms, which was recognised with a rural environment award. In 1998 Peter Yealands began the development of New Zealand’s leading environmentally sustainable winery, Yealands Estate. Author Tom Percy, who spent 18 months working on the biography, says Peter Yealands is a man with simple values who accomplishes complex and marvellous things. ‘A bloke for all seasons: The Peter Yealands Story’ will be launched at a function on Friday 24 February at Yealands Estate Winery in Seddon, Marlborough.

Kayaking for a cause Corey Rowlings will spend up to a week paddling from Anakiwa to Havelock. The experienced sea kayaker plans to leave this Saturday, in a bid to raise money for Marlborough St John.

To support Corey in his mission, please look at www. fundraiseonline.co.nz/coreyrawlings/, and donations can also be made directly to St John via the safe webpage.

There are many colourful pieces of art like these on display at Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery on High St, celebrating the great art class success at CARE Marlborough.

Childbirth and parenting classes new to Maataa Waka The Maataa Waka Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust is pleased to announce the launch of its new ‘Childbirth Education and Parenting Classes’. Beginning last Wednesday, the Trust has already had an influx of enquiries and positive feedback for the classes and organisers Olivia Doonan and Huia Crosby are excited about the future potential of the classes. “We are offering an alternative to mainstream childbirth education classes with a cultural aspect, and we are encouraging Maataa Waka’s new Childbirth Education and Parenting Classes facilitators anyone to join,” says Olivia Doonan and Huia Crosby, pictured with their children (from left) Amiri Huia. Some special sketches By Annabelle Latz They are works of art, and a reflection of everyday life. CARE Marlborough is hosting a display of its art work this week at Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery on High St. Standing for Consumers Assisting Recovery Everyday, CARE Marlborough helps about 200 people in and around Blenheim at any time, providing a safe place to spend time, socialise, reflect and carry out daily tasks. Support manager Katrina Martin has been with CARE Marlborough for five years, and said the vision of providing empathy and support has been achieved, and is an ongoing service that brings people back to them for ongoing support and help.

“There is a huge level of respect and it’s a beautiful culture here, we all get it.” She said they share good times, laughter, and when help is required, people are sensitive to tap into the needs of others. “We have well trained staff who are very easy going and approachable, and people who use the house are supportive to each other.” There have been fortnightly sketching classes at CARE Marlborough’s home base for the past one and half years. “Some of the people who started in the classes had never sketched before.” About 30 pieces have been on display since Saturday, with a celebration this Friday. Entry is free, but any donations are much appreciated.

By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim toddler Sean Mitchell is blissfully unaware of his title ‘Blenheim’s first baby for 2010’, but instead is perfectly content as long as he has a toy car, truck or motorbike in his hands. Sean easily claimed the 2010 title as he was the only baby being born at the time and after an anxious wait for parents Sean and Tania, he entered the world on January 2 at 8:45pm. “It’s hard to imagine that he was that small,” reflects Tania. “We have been really lucky that Sean has been such a laid back and happy little boy,” adds Callun. A very social and fun loving boy, Sean will soon have a permanent playmate as Callun and Tania prepare to welcome their second child in May. “He’s very excited and with his personality I’m sure he will be a fantastic big brother,” says Tania.

Try a slice of surf By Annabelle Latz Hamish Simpson wants to give people a bit of a taste for surfing. The 37 year-old Blenheim resident comes from a big surfing family, and started surfing in 1997 when he was living in Sydney, Australia. He returned to Blenheim in 2002, where he started up a water taxi business in the Marlborough Sounds. His busy work lifestyle did not allow time for surfing, so he hung the board up for a few years. The last couple of years have been quieter on the work front, so he re-

sparked his passion for surfing. He has spent two seasons competing on the south island surf circuit. “I found that I was relatively good at it.” He concedes the waves at Whites Bay and Robin Hood Bay are not excellent, but provide a good level for beginners. “I want to give them a bit of a heads up on what the sport is about.” He said surfing is a sport that suits most people because it builds confidence, improves balance, and provides an opportunity for visiting a new place.

Fish import investigations Investigations have been launched into the New Zealand fish imports, after publication of an extensive investigation into slave or indentured labour conditions aboard foreign charter fishing vessels operating in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone. The report focused on the Korean ship Melilla 203 which was arrested in

Christchurch in December. Its sister ship Melilla 201 was arrested last Friday. The catches from Melilla were bought and processed by Christchurch’s United Fisheries, New Zealand’s eighth-largest seafood company, which had sold the same species in the same period to distributors operating in the United States.

Rowing medals for masters Story and photo by Annabelle Latz If you train hard you get results, no matter what your age. Brian Hutchison and his son Ross, and Willie Parker from Blenheim Rowing Club proved this theory, winning nine gold, three silver, and three bronze medals at the Masters Rowing Competition in Dunedin at Waitangi weekend. The rowing was on the harbour, with some races transferred to an indoor competition due to bad weather. Brian was the oldest competitor on the water, but was proof that 79 is only a number. He took four wins, including three at the indoor competition at Forsyth Barr. “I row twice a week, I’m going to row for as long as I can.” Brian started rowing in the early 1950’s, but stopped for many years while family and his 43 years as linesman for the post shop kept him busy.

He’s been back on the water since 2004. “Once you get a bit older it’s about doing what you can to keep things going.” Brian’s son Ross started rowing when he was 19, but also stopped for many years, returning to the sport after an organised family row for Brian’s birthday a couple of years ago. The 51 year-old Blenheim builder works hard at the sport. “This year I was down on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. It’s the sort of thing you have to do if you want to be up there.” He won five gold medals, also dominating the indoor competition. “It’s like anything, if you work hard you reap the rewards.” He said there was time for laughs too among team members. “We have been told so many stories about Bob Glichrist but our lips are sealed.” Willie Parker rowed at school and early university days, and

then took it up again in 2000. “I remember we used to row out from The Boathouse at the junction of the Opawa and Taylor rivers.” The 64 year-old Chartered Accountant said it’s a social sport, and a good change from the office. He didn’t manage any gold medals, but still had a great performance with two silvers; on the water and at the indoor competition, and a bronze medal. “Once I’d finished carting the kids around I decided it was time to cart myself around again.” Brian and Willie went to Sydney for the World Masters Games in 2009 which they both said was fantastic. With many competitions in the South Island to keep them busy, they’ll stay on the water. Ross said it was unfortunate their fellow rower Bill Chandler couldn’t make the recent competition, so had their photo taken with his namesake.

Ross Hutchison, Brian Hutchison and Willie Parker were excellent representatives for Blenheim Rowing Club, securing many placings at the recent Masters Games in Dunedin.

Shooting for the stars Junior Tall Fern selection By Annabelle Latz It was the first time Nic Murray had been to Australia, and for the 12 year-old Renwick School pupil, travelling there with his New Zealand basketball team last month was a great opportunity. “Being away from the family meant I had to be more organised, so it was quite full on but a great experience.” He was a member of the New Zealand Kea Under-14 Boys’ team competing in, and winning, the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury, New South Wales. They played sides from New South Wales, Western Australian, South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. Away from his usual position of Point Guard which he plays for Marlborough, he played Shooting Guard when he wore the silver fern at last month’s tournament. Wherever he is on the court, young Nic loves it all. “It’s the intensity, you need to be really fit, it’s fun running around.” The NZ Kea side beat Tasmania in the final, 72-47. It was a significant second half, against a half time score of 36-36. Nic spends up to four sessions a week on the basketball court during some parts of the season, between representing Marlborough, being selected for development squads and now representing his country. But he takes it all in his stride. “I just go one at a time,” he said. Nic’s other sporting passions are rugby, tennis and cricket. “I want to be a professional sportsman, in rugby, cricket or basketball, I don’t mind.” Chris Morris is president of Marlborough Basketball Association, and described the

scene at the moment with the young players as a vibrant one. “We are confident we have a good base for success.” Marlborough Basketball needs two coaches for this season, for an Under-15 girls’ side and an Under-19 boys’ side. Please call Marlborough Basketball on 577 8300, or email marlboroughbasketball@ gmail.com.

Volleyball results The second round of Marlborough Volleyball Club’s Fairweathers’ Senior Summer League at Stadium 2000 was exciting. In the President’s grade MBC had a 3-0 victory over Kinoaths, the Treefellas went

down 2-1 to MCG Senior B, and Woodbourne beat MGC Senior C 2-1. The Fairweathers Fair Play of the Week Award went to MGC Juniors who exhibited good self control a very positive team effort throughout

their game. The Marlborough Junior Volleyball’s Subway Spikers competition on Friday afternoons continues to be well supported, and the Yea 7/8 grade Bohally Spikeaholics won the Subway Fair Play Team of the Week.

Marlborough Girls' College pupil Jaime Campbell will be playing for the Junior Tall Ferns this year, and hopes to make Greece next year for the World Championships.

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Jaime Campbell was a bit too busy to represent her country in Basketball last year, but her feet didn’t miss a beat at national trials this month. T h e 17 y e a r- o l d Marlborough Girls’ College pupil has just made the Junior Tall Ferns for the first time. She first represented New Zealand for her age group in 2010. She admits to being relatively surprised by her place in the Junior Tall Ferns. “I just thought it was great to be trialing, but there were a lot of people better than me.” So it was a good start to the school day a couple of weeks ago. “Dad called me on my way to school and told me. I was shocked and just said ‘Are

you kidding?!’” She had to quickly rejuggle other commitments she has, including giving netball a miss for this year. “Now I’ll have to get back into the basketball!” Jaime also plays the baritone saxophone in the school jazz band, and is in the middle of a busy volleyball season. The saxophone is great, it’s something a bit different that I can do on my own.” Jaime has always been around basketball, and first represented Marlborough at primary school. Her mum Sue played for New Zealand in the 1980’s, (nee Lines) and her dad Al played in the national league. “My parents always put a ball in my hand when I was little, and I’d go along to the courts when they did.” Jaime has national and

international tournaments with the Junior Tall Ferns this year, including a trip to China. Fundraising will be a big project to help Jaime get there, and her dad has suggested a reunion for his old band Denny and the Jets, who he played with 10 to 12 years ago. “I’ll do a raffle or something too, and apply for some funding.” The dream would be for the Tall Ferns to qualify for the World Championships next year in Greece, although her Speech Language qualification plans may have to be postponed for a year. “It would be awesome to go to the World Champs.” Jaime encourages anyone to have a go at basketball, saying it’s a great sport providing a lot of fun and potential to travel.

Memorial to Brent By Bruce Whiteside It is difficult for me at 78 to write along these lines let alone retrace the steps of a path that I have traversed; a journey that has seen my family come face to face with the reality of mental illness. It is not a nice story, but it will serve to remind the reader that all of us are despite outward appearances fragile creatures. Ten years ago almost to the day I stood under an orange tree and said to my youngest son ‘Brent you are falling into a vortex. If you do not pull yourself together, you will end up like your grandmother’. I still shed tears thinking about that moment …oh that we could turn the clock back! Three days later on his sister’s property in Victoria he took his own life. We read these stories, then forget them and move on with life. Or do we? Two or three days ago Whitney Houston made headlines, not as an entertainer with the voice of an angel, but because they found her drowned in a bathtub, along with drugs. For me that cut deep, not because I was a fan, but because this was the mirror image of how Brent’s grandmother died in 1972. Mental illness when I was a boy was a subject that you did not talk about, it was a social pariah. The impact on us children was tough. Our Mum was a loving soul, a sensitive and talented person who was a deep thinker. Both my Mum and Dad were creatures of the depression; hardship moulded much of their lives and left its scars. Depression crept insidiously into Mum’s demeanour. She was placed on medication, came under doctors and specialists. During all of this my Dad tried to carry on a business. Today tradesmen have vehicles; Dad did not and never in his 90 years did he sit behind a steering wheel. On this occasion my Dad and I were working 30

miles from home out in a small logging village that was serviced by a sand track through the young pine forest. It was 1951. At 1.30am a knock came on the door of where we were bunked up. It was the local taxi driver. There had been an accident at home. That was 62 years ago and I will take to my grave the sight that confronted my Dad and me that horrible night. My Mum absolutely tranquil laid in the double bed with her arm under my sisters head that was wrapped in a white towel …drenched in blood. “What the bloody hell have you done woman?”, my Dad yelled. What had occurred was that my mother had experienced hallucination where ‘the Lord told me to kill my daughter’. My older sister was cut about the hands, that prevented what could have been… we will never know. Two things are evident here; one… that doctors in a small town were not qualified to diagnose mental illness, and two the remark by father. He found himself in a real life situation that he didn’t know how to handle. At 2.30 am in the morning my father sent me in the same taxi up to the hospital. The night sister grilled me, but inside I was crying ‘Mum is going to go to jail’. A 16 year old kid did not have the nous of today’s generation, but in the event the police never came into the picture. Mum deteriorated, received specialist treatment that did not work and nearly broke my father. Firmly in the closet my father who simply did could not cope and was frozen into the hold of social stigmatisation. At the time I met up with a psychiatric nurse who was umpiring in an inter-provincial cricket match. He instructed me to ask my Dad to contact him at the Tokanui Hospital. My Mother went through what was in its day fairly standard although harsh treatment; shock therapy. Many visits over some years saw her not only recover

Brent boating in the Sounds and right with his sister Jo, at a RAAF function in Canberra. but give birth to a new boy, my brother. Tragically history was to treat my brother harsher than me. In 1972, at the tender age of 16 he came home to find his mother partly dressed face down in a bathtub full of water. You may well ask, ‘why did you not see it coming, why didn’t you do something about it’? I say look around you and look closely at members of your own family and question that which appears unquestionable. When I said to Brent that day under the orange tree what I did, I did not expect him to do what he did. Neither would you. We are loving human beings for the most part and sometimes we do not see what may be obvious to others. Never diagnosed as such my Mother suffered schizophrenia; not recognised until it was too late my youngest son suffered schizophrenia. In my quieter moments I cry alone... I guess I always will. Is this social pariah to be released from the closet ever so slowly? Whilst it is true that mental illness has come a long way in those 60 years, the fight must take on a more urgent renewal of effort. To speak of the individual as I do here masks greater concerns. It has to do with genealogical history. In my family there are recorded histories of forebears who died in mental homes, as far back as

1860, couple that to children living today who are condemned to a life restricted by the infliction of this social pariah. Is there a lesson to be learned from this? Yes, to open up to people, not be inhibited to speak out and better still to fall in behind the march to help those to a better tomorrow. These things are often closer to home than you may think. The boy in the story who took his life that fateful February 19th 2002, who gave 20 of his 36 years to the Royal Australian Air Force will be remembered this weekend by a couple of people at the Blenheim Sun. You see Brent was not only my youngest son, but Les’s brother. Contributed in honour, by his Dad 16/02/2012.
