Blues & Brews has given $800,000 to locals By Annabelle Latz What does your festival ticket money actually go towards? Blues, Brews and BBQ’s and Marlborough Wine and Food Festival attracts thousands of festival goers each year, which attracts thousands of dollars. Both Marlborough’s wine industry and the greater Marlborough community reap benefits from the wine and food festival, explained Wine Marlborough General Manager Marcus Pickens. He said surplus money from the festival goes back to Marlborough Winegrowers Association Inc; the body behind funding the promotion of winemaking, research, and education of the wine industry. “It benefits the local economy.” He said this in turn helps the
region as a whole, sustaining a strong wine industry to promote employment and enjoyment with local wine. Marlborough Wine and Food Festival has been going for 29 years, and this year attracted 8000 people, about the same number as last year. “All work we do for the festival is for the public benefit,” said Marcus. Blues Brews and BBQ’s has given $800,000 to Blenheim Round Table community service club over the past 19 years of existence. Festival organiser Graeme Boon said the downstream effect of community involvement at the festival is also very effective for fundraising for local groups. “Groups participate in the event like doing security, cleaning up,

and running stalls. Therefore there’s other monies gained other than from what we give away.” About 3000 people attended this year’s festival, which Graeme said was surprising. “It was about the same as last year, but I thought the better known band Opshop would have pulled more people.” He said February has become a very busy month for festivals in Marlborough, and people have to choose between them, especially at the moment when money is tight. The Classic Hits Winery Tour at Villa Maria Estate last week raised $827 for the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, (www.rmtc.org. nz.). The last 15 shows has raised over $12,000 for the centre.

Beautician takes on Mt Everest challenge Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Ten years ago Skin Beautiful owner Juliet Lindsay considered trekking to the Mt Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas, but she felt the asthma she suffered from could hamper her attempt. Now with advances in asthma treatments and confirmation from her doctor, Juliet has decided to pursue her dream and will be fulfilling it by taking on the 5160m trek in May. Juliet will be joined by her partner Duncan Carr and will be part of a larger group led by professional guides. She anticipates the trek will take approximately 18 days. “When I initially thought about doing this trek I read about an asthmatic who had to be helicoptered out, so it made me think my own asthma could prevent me as well. My doctor was really encouraging, so here I am about to take on the biggest active challenge I have ever faced,” she smiles. Just like her attempt to trek to the base camp, Juliet is attempting to fill her large jar with sponsorship donations. All money raised will be donated to local charitable organisations including the Asthma Marlborough, Diabetes Marlborough and Alzheimers Marlborough. “Already the response has been overwhelming and the support is really encouraging. “Some people have donated $1 which is great as compiled it could amount to a substantial total,” she says. Training for the trek has been a hard and sometimes humorous journey, Juliet jokes. “I have been bruised, strained and even lost in a fog,” she laughs. “Duncan, myself and some of our friends and family have been tramping all over

trents staff look for new jobs There will be 12 job seekers searching for new places to work, in light of the recent news that Blenheim Trents Wholesale Ltd is closing. The Stuart St workplace will close within the next eight weeks. Foodstuffs South Island general manager wholesale operations and procurement, John Mullins, said everyone is staying as positive as they can. “The mood of the place is pretty good, the staff are appreciative for the work we are doing for job opportunities.” He predicts positive development for employment very soon.

Marlborough, putting in between 15 and 20 hours per week. “I am really excited but I am even more excited about fundraising for local charities. My friend Cherie D’ alliessi, who has been training with us, has type 1 Diabetes and has been a huge source of inspiration,” Juliet says. Because Juliet will be away for the month of May, she is advising her clients to contact her as soon as possible for appointments, vouchers or products prior to April. You can phone Skin Beautiful on 578 8433 for bookings or donations.
Vintage is approaching, and prices are looking good for growers. A milder summer has meant less sunshine and late flowering, leading to less grapes. Last year the tonnage price for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was $1174, and this year it could be closer to $1300, according to local growers. The Sun Newspaper will have more information very soon on the picture on this year’s harvest.

Bulls and broncs Story and photos by Annabelle Latz Riding a steer was part of the initiation at Muller Station, and has cut a future for a young shepherd in the Awatere Valley. Will Wilding said learning a trick or two about rodeo riding was just part of the scene. “I gave it a go when I started mustering. I was told all young country boys had to have a go at it.” It began a new lifestyle for the 21 year-old, and he has just been awarded the Dectomax South Island Young Cowboy of the Year, after just two seasons. “The people I travel with to rodeos like Cameron McDonald and Jeremy Dillon are very experienced, they really help me out.” Will rides saddle bronc, bareback, and bulls. “It’s awesome when everything gets in time. When you have a good ride it seems easy, and when it’s hard you really have to work for it.” The season is coming to and end, and his most memorable ride was at Mataura Rodeo, Southland, in the bareback section. “It was a powerful horse and it scared me, but I knew I had to win it to get the Dectomax!” Good preparation before a ride is key. “I try and fire myself up,

ond ride in the open bull competition; every rider aims for 8 seconds. Tua Marina Rodeo president Grant Sheridan said it was a fairly hectic weekend, but lots of fun. There were about 3000 spectators for the vintage machinery display and rodeo action, as well as side shows.

By Annabelle Latz If you think you are up to the job, the Chief Executive Officer position at Marlborough District Council will be up for grabs later this year. Due to be advertised in June or July, the new position will be open in December. “We will be starting the process very shortly,” said Mayor Alistair Sowman. He said the pool for local government managers here is not a huge one. Current CEO Andrew Besley said it is still too early to consider his reapplication for this year. “At the moment I’m too busy working on the Long Term Plan and the Budget. It will be a decision I make closer to the mid year.” Alistair said the salary would be a point of interest for the applicants, in light of the recent statement by Andrew regarding his own pay, and turning down recent pay rises. Andrew has not had a salary increase for two years, although his contract allowed an annual review each year.

I’m officially two, but really I’m eight Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim boy Levi Bryant gets a kick out of knowing his birth date falls on Leap Day, such as today – February 29. Birthdays are not a tradition celebrated in Levi’s family so it has never fazed him that he would only have celebrated two. For parents Cherayn and Shane Bryant, Levi’s birth date has always been considered “unique”. “After having two girls having Levi was very special, made even more special by being Leap Day. “The whole thing was unreal, Levi was a week overdue and my husband joked that he’ll be born on Leap Day, so it was hard case when it really did happen,” laughs Cherayn. The youngest of three siblings, Levi enjoys the perks of being the baby of the family and says he likes being the only boy. “I love Star Wars like my dad, riding my scooter and playing with my rabbit Chewy,” he says.
What is a Leap Year?
A leap year consists of 366 days, as opposed to a normal year, which has 365 days. During Leap Years, we add a Leap Day, an extra, or intercalary day on February 29. Nearly every four years is a Leap Year in our modern Gregorian Calendar. Why do we need Leap Years?
Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun. However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn’t add a day on February 29 nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days!
LEAP DAY: Levi Bryant doesn’t get many opportunities to see his birthday, February 29 on the calendar. Levi was Marlborough’s ‘Leap Day’ baby in 2004.
Councillors go digital with iPads By Annabelle Latz Paper shuffling and highlighters are a product of the past for meetings at Marlborough District Council. Councillors have recently been supplied with iPads, in a bid to ‘go digital’ and help the environment. Councillor Jesssica Bagge is thrilled she no longer has to carry around washing baskets full of paper.
“I find it wonderful.” As the iPads were purchased recently, a lot of documentation is still in paper form, but from now on all future information will be available on the iPad. “It will be great for cross referencing. If you are in a meeting and you want to look up something, it can be done easily straight away.” Cr Bagge admits she wasn’t big on technology before getting her
iPad, but all the councillors are helping each other out. Mayor Alistair Sowman said it was about having all the information at the fingertips. “I was one of the guinea pigs. It took a while but now it’s so easy to access information,” he said. There were 14 iPads purchased from gen-i in Nelson, for $999 each.
At hEr FingErtiPs: Councillor Jessica Bagge says her new iPad means she doesn’t have to carry around stacks of paper to m e e ti n g s , an d everything is easily accessible.

Winery tour a classic hit Story and photos by Annabelle Latz When the dancing vibe finally reached the crowd, kiwi sounds kept feet shuffling until the first stars lit up the night sky. Last Thursday evening was the sixth Classic Hits Winery Tour at Villa Maria Estate, attracting 1600 people for the evening that promised sunshine, wine, and great kiwi music. There was a slight delay on stage during Gin Wigmore’s performance, when she lost her footing and fell off the stage, but she was soon back up rocking with the crowd. “I thought there was another step there!” she exclaimed to a relieved audience. It was the thirteenth of seventeen concerts for The Mutton Birds,
Avalanche City and Gin Wigmore, and was opened by local Marlborough Girls’ College pupil Clara van Wel, with a 15 minute acoustic set. Clara, 14, started playing the guitar nearly four years ago, and this was her biggest performance yet. “It’s a bit surreal out there.” She was looking forward to playing in front of her family and friends. Clara’s little sister Daisy, 10, was front of stage for her sister’s performance. ”It’s probably one of the most amazing things she’s been at, I’m so proud of her.” Enjoying the music from picnic rugs and camp chairs were people from in and around Marlborough. Melanie Cherry and Lyn Carter didn’t have far to come from Can-
vastown, but the tickets came from thousands of miles away. “My son sent us these tickets, he’s in Afghanistan at the moment,” said Lyn. Andrew Deane from Blenhem was celebrating his birthday at the concert with friends. ‘We always sit under this tree!” said Raewyn Sharpe. Bruce Farley was from Upper Moutere, and came over especially after loving the Nelson concert so much. But he was disappointed not more people were up dancing. “I’m disappointed at how complacent the crowd is.” Staff from Raupo Riverside Café were enjoying an out of work get together. “It’s good wine, what a great staff party!” said Helena Lane.

Lacing up for rugby league Story and photo by Annabelle Latz These lads are lacing up their boots and rounding up players for a season of rugby league; the first time in a decade. John Hart and Powhiri Cooper have entered Wairau Taniwha in the seven-team Tasman Rugby League Competition, which starts next month. Rugby league was very strong in Marlborough during the 1990’s, but was last played in 2002. The family and community support it provided the area was too valuable to forget about. “It’s a family orientated thing and a promotion of health,” said John. “We want a cleaner image including being smoke free and not having bad language,” said Powhiri. They are training three times a week at Pollard
Park, incorporating the historical game Ki O Rahi into their fitness training. The traditional Maori ball game was introduced into Europe before 1940, and during WW2 Maori soldiers demonstrated their technical, fitness and tactical skills included in the game. This traditional game has since been passed onto French and Italian soliders and civilians. The Wairau Taniwha team shirts have an artistic flare of Polynesian and Maori designs. “It will give people the idea of cultural lessons we have amongst ourselves,” said Powhiri. John said he would like to see this as a start to rebuilding rugby league as a sport for the future in Marlborough. “Mums stop us to ask when we’re going to get kids league going again.
It is our plan to have this depth.” Registration day for Wairau Taniwha is on Sunday at Pollard Park. The team still needs to be allocated a home ground, with an application currently with Marlborough District Council for Athletic Park. More committee staff are also being sought, to join Powhiri who is the manager. Registration time on Sunday has not yet been confirmed. Please phone John, 0277 179 612, or Powhiri, 0210 239 5530.

Beer provokes attack On the morning of Sunday, February 26 a 23-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for assault with intent to injure and for assaulting a female. At about 12:30am the victims were with a group of associates on the Taylor River Bank in Blenheim. At this time the male and several of his associates walked past the group and began abusing the victims. The male has then allegedly approached the first victim and helped himself to a box of beer, and as the victim stood up the male head butted him, knocking him to the ground and once on the ground he kicked him in the side of the head. As a result of the assault the victim
received bruising to his head and cuts to the inside of his mouth. Observing the assault the second victim, a female, stepped in to intervene and became involved in a verbal argument with the male before the male punched the victim in the face with a closed fist and grabbed hold of her around the neck placing her in a head lock. As a result of the assault she too received bruising to her head. The male appeared before the court Monday morning, no pleas were entered and a hearing was set for later this month. A 24-year-old unemployed female was also arrested in relation to the assault for disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.

Quake marked by ribbons Fluttering streaks of red and black ribbons have been catching the attention of those passing by Seymour Picture Framing on Grove Road, as owners Lisa and Mike McKewen displayed Canterbury’s colours in honour of the first anniversary of Christchurch’s deadly earthquake. The former Christchurch couple relocated to Blenheim in August last year after their business located in the city’s CBD was damaged in the February 22 quake. Although they say life in Marlborough is much more “settled”, they still wanted to show their support by attaching red and black ribbons to their sign. “I managed to get through the day without any tears,” smiles Lisa. “It was emotional for us but we have a lot to look forward to now, one year on and we are doing good.” Lisa and Mike operated their picture framing business on Tuam Street in Christchurch which suffered structural damage during February’s quake. “Mike and I were in the building at the time it hit and outside we could see facades coming down and buildings shaking around us. “We went to shut our doors but they wouldn’t shut, that’s when everyone started saying to get out immediately. Everyone was in a daze, I never thought that would be the last time we

would be back in our business,” Lisa recalls. The couple was given a total of six hours to retrieve what they could of their business and livelihood, which they then relocated to a new shop in Ferrymead. In June that shop also suffered damage from earthquakes so the couple made the decision to leave.

The Blenheim Belaires Leisure Marching team will be hosting this Saturday’s Top of the South one day event at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim. Photo provided.
Story by Celeste Lodewyk It is not unusual to hear the stomping of feet at Lansdowne Park, but this Saturday the noise will be coming from a group much different to a field of rugby players. The annual Top of the South Leisure Marching event is being hosted by the Blenheim Belaires team and will see 16 teams marching in formation. Teams will be coming from Hokitika, Westport, Motueka, Nelson and Greymouth to take part in this one day event which will run from 1pm to 3:30pm. Blen heim Bela i res
coach Pam Wadsworth says the event is non competitive and is purely for fun. “Leisure marching is about fun, fitness and friendship and we are thrilled to have so many teams taking part,” she says. Blenheim will be well represented with all three teams, the Blenheim Belaires, the Kon Tiki Leisure Marchers and the Blenheim Funseekers. “The public is welcome to come to Lansdowne Park and watch the marching, then in the evening we will be hosting a private event where we all dress up and have fun,” Pam says.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What are your thoughts on the ANZAC Parade being moved from Seymour Square to Blenheim School?
Leyton Stephenson Blenheim
Jock Gebbie Blenheim
Ian McKinnon Blenheim
Gloria Yarrall Blenheim
Bill Pavitt Blenheim
Michael Dietrich Blenheim
It’s a big shame, not an ideal situation. Seymour Square is the most practical place to have it.
It has to be held somewhere, it doesn’t bother me.
Should be held in Seymour Square, or in the Clubs of Marlborough. They did not make a good choice.
It doesn’t matter to me, as long as people are safe.
Bit disgraceful - steps could have been made to repair it. Cycle lanes can be built quick enough.
Disgraceful. Absolutely farcical. Knee-jerk reaction by certain council members to the barriers put around the clock tower.

Police have today named the man who drowned on Saturday evening while snorkelling south of Kaikoura. He was Vincent He, aged 32 from Boston in the United States. Sergeant Barry Hansen of Kaikoura Police said it appeared Mr He had become tangled in kelp while snorkelling. He was not wearing flippers. He was last seen about 6:30pm and his friends contacted police about 8:10pm after failing to locate him. A search was launched immediately and searching resumed on Sunday morning. Mr He’s body was discovered by the Police Dive Squad about 11:45am on Sunday not far from where he had gone missing.
Manhattan spelling Dear Ed, I read the article about the Manhattan Cafe in your last edition. For the sake of the owners of 23 years I hope it remains open. My query, though, is why, in the heading ‘Manhatten to stay open’ the spelling was ‘Manhatten’ with an ‘e’? If anything but with an ‘a’, if you know the history of the cafe, I might have expected you to spell it Manhatton with an ‘o’, as the original cafe, situated on Arthur Street at the other end of what was The Strand, was opened by a Mr Hatton, who, appropriately, chose the play on words, and again, appropriately, was known as Old Man Hatton. Twice weekly Sun welcomed Dear Ed, I am delighted that The Sun will be coming out twice a week. That will be more times than the great orb itself, of late! It did seem that The Midweek began to be published to ‘squeeze’ you out. I’m glad it hasn’t and long may you shine. On a more sombre note I commend
your father for courageously being so open as to write about what is such a personal, private matter for your family. In so doing he has educated & alerted others of us and we can be the more vigilant about such health matters. Kia kaha. Arvensis
Dear Ed, Great local paper, and good to see an additional paper is going to be written on a Friday, especially in these hard times for any type of retail in Australia or N.Z. I am living in Tugun, southern end of the Gold Coast right beside the International Airport, and look forward to reading your local paper every Wednesday online. That was a great piece written about Les Hope, I am from the Jacques family and lived one house down from the HOPES in South St. There were nine in our family, plus eleven in the Hopes so the family who
lived in between us had a fairly lively life, in those days street cricket was all the go . I left Blenheim for Aussie in 1972, for 6 mths, some how finished up in Port Moresby, for 18 mths, the Giant Bowen Basin Coal Fields for 12 yrs and now Tugun. But I still call myself a Kiwi if someone pops the question. Most of the clan still live in the Blenheim area, please Keep up the very informative local news. I still like to know what is going on in my home town. Kerry Jacques Tugun, Gold Coast, Australia

I am sure that his article must be helpful to families struggling with similar issues today. I only hope that writing it may have released some of your pain, Bruce. Thank you too, Les, for publishing this article. On a lighter note, I believe that Bruce is a very gifted writer, and would hope he might write again for the “Sun”, not necessarily on such a sensitive topic, but on anything that took his fancy. Moving tribute Dear Ed, I am writing to thank Bruce Whiteside for his moving and eloquent tribute to his son, Brent. His unflinching honesty is commendable. I have never before seen someone write so movingly about the mental illness that has plagued generations of his family. One can imagine the torment of his mother, driven by messages that must have felt very compelling, not to mention the horror for Bruce and his father, trying to come to grips with something that was totally incomprehensible to them.

A multi-talented sportsman By Annabelle Latz Jeremy McKenzie’s life is a jigsaw, which he slots together to create a complete colourful image that works. The 35 year-old senior wine maker at Villa Maria Estate was sixth in this months Coast to Coast Longest Day competition for the second time; a result he was pretty chuffed about. With the Wanaka Half Iron Man in January, he’d been spending more time in the pool than on the kayak. “But all the swimming helped with my upper strength and core strength, and has similar stretches and motions to paddling.” As a rural boy from North Canterbury, Jeremy has always been actively involved in the outdoors. He started deer and pig hunting when he was 11 years old, and still spends many hours on the Marlborough and Canterbury hills all year round. “You get a massive endurance base from it.” His best piece of advice for being a good athlete is to listen to advice. And he’s done plenty of that. “I can run well but I still like to listen to what people have to say.” Jeremy’s keen ear and thirst for knowledge has allowed him to successfully train himself. “I’ve had great help and really good support from local people. In the last two years or so I’ve done a lot of listening, because you can gain a huge amount of knowledge this way.” He is a firm believer in quality training sessions, rather than quantity. person, and instructs spin classes. “You don’t have to be putting mammoth hours Jeremy says her wonderful support and in to get to a high standard.” understanding has been critical to his success. Still with a lingering interest for forensic science, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Bio-Chemistry and micro-biology, post graduate studies in forensics and then viticulture and oenology. He decided to take the path of wine making, and took up his first job post at Alan Scott Wines in 2000. He has been at Villa Maria Estate since 2006, and head wine maker for three years. “Marlborough is a good base, and a great place to settle down.” The family live in Omaka Valley, and grow nine acres of pinot noir grapes. He describes making pinot noir as a “labour of love.” “It’s a challenge, it can be such a fickle variety.” Jeremy is aiming for World Duathlon Championships in Nancy, France, later this
year, where he will be sure to take some time relaxing amongst the French grape vines once again. “I just fit stuff in and make it work.
LIFE ADVICE FROM JEREMY Metaphorically speaking, rules Jeremy learned from Coast to Coast can be transposed into daily life for many people”: “You go through zones when you are racing that are hard, you go into a dark hole and you can come out of it. It’s understanding your body and knowing how to solve those situations when you hit that red line.” “People have to be careful not to get caught up in the race, and push themselves too fast too early. Race your race, rather than getting caught up in the hype and forgetting how long the day is.”

Bring your house unique into the 21st century decorating ideas • Lag your pipes
For those still living in homes which have yet to be updated with modern insulation and water piper, you may be interested in finding out how a home renovation project could bring your home into the 21st century.
If you can access the pipes, particularly the hot ones, wrap them with a suitable lagging material. This has the same effect as the cylinder wrap and limits the evaporation of heat from the pipes between cylinder and outlet.
• Check the flow from your shower
Showers can use up to a third of the total energy and water in your house. See how long it takes to fill a 10 litre bucket – less than a minute and your shower is using more than you really need. Talk to your local plumber to find out about more efficient showers and what’s applicable to your installation. • Wrap your hot water cylinder
Just like a sleeping bag keeps you warm by trapping heat inside,
a hot water cylinder wrap will improve the insulation properties of an old hot water cylinder. With less heat escaping, less energy is required to maintain the temperature of the water inside the cylinder. However, this is probably still not as good as a new cylinder or a new continuous flow water heater, these will always be more efficient than an old one.

• Choose an energy source for your water heater
Not everyone has gas to their door, but gas is considered more efficient in heating water than electricity. If you do have gas, other options open up e.g. storage water heater versus instantaneous water heaters. Talk to your local plumber about available options and what is best for you.

Supplementary heat sources for hot water systems: Systems are available that can draw energy from external sources to heat your water ‘for free’. Wetbacks are often used in rural areas or where fires are extensively used for space heating or cooking. Solar panels utilise the energy from the sun to heat water. Again, this can act directly on the hot water supply or via a heat exchanger. Manufacturers claim fairly sizable energy savings which can be related to your location.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk March 1 will be a day of reminiscing as well as celebration as Blenheim Auto Groomers is handed over to a new owner. Owners for the past six years, husband and wife team Rhys Ransby and Jody Ellis are preparing to hand over the reins to another local groomer – Aaryn Nicholson. Aaryn and his partner Ange Black are thrilled to be the new owners and say their on going friendship with Rhys and Jody was one of the contributing factors in the purchase. “I already had an affiliation with the business as I designed their logo seven years ago,” smiles Aaryn. “It was only in passing that I got talking to Rhys about the
business and before we knew it we made the purchase,” he laughs. Aaryn has been an auto groomer for the past 16 years in Marlborough, 14 of those years was with one employer. It was not long after Aaryn begun looking for a change that he came across the opportunity to purchase Blenheim Auto Groomers. “It has been a long term goal to own my own grooming business, especially one with a reputation such as this one so both Ange and I are really happy to be taking over,” he says. Accord i ng to R hys, he couldn’t have found a better buyer. “It was important that we found the right buyer, not just
anyone who walked in off the street. “We were really wanting someone with the same passion for vehicles that we had. “Jody and I wish Aaryn and Ange the best of luck,” Rhys says. Blenheim Auto Groomers will continue to offer the same guaranteed professional grooming services. These include a full range of services including interior cleaning, paint restoration, leather reconditioning, water spot stain removal, signwriting removal, professional detailing, metal polishing, cut and polishing, stain and pet hair removal, overspray removal, machine buffering and waxing, steam cleaning and headlight rejuvenation.

CARE first art exhibition Story and photo by Annabelle Latz The art gallery walls were bursting with colour and expression last week. CARE Marlborough had its first art exhibition at Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Gallery on High St, and the artists’ faces boasted pride and satisfaction as they described their work they had on display. “I like to do expressionist acrylic paintings, and I like to use colour and light,” said Michelle Parkin, showing her bold paintings and collages. Carole Wilson has been taking art classes one fortnightly at CARE Marlborough for nearly two years, and was thrilled to see the end result. “The main thing is encouragement, for these people it’s coming and seeing what they have done, and it’s huge.” Carole said there are good and bad days at the classes, but every lesson is about providing a way to deal with stress relief, and managing day to day problems. “What we are looking at here is an expression of them, their aspirations.”

The playcentre movement recognises that children reach their full potential most successfully when their whãnau/ parents/caregivers understand their development and take part in the learning process. Playcentres philosophy is that whãnau/ parents/caregivers are the first and best educators of their young children – and investing time in our children is a theme that Playcentre is strongly committed to. Playcentre originated 70 years ago when a group of mothers gathered in Karori, Wellington to create a space where they could support one another as parents, provide a space for play for their children and learn new skills. Their ideas quickly spread to communities around the country. Parent teams guide and talk with small groups of children and join in their play,
helping them make the most of the learning opportunities. Through learning in a supportive play environment, children develop the curiosity and courage to try new things and the motivation to extend themselves. Every Playcentre parent is offered free training that will give them the skills and confidence for working with children. This training includes ideas on play, how to deal with challenging child behaviour and understanding how children learn. Courses also cover group skills, cultural issues, Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) and basic Maori language. Parents report they feel more confident in their abilities and are able to make an on-going contribution to their children’s learning into their school years. Fran Johnson, winner of the Nude Golf International (left) with weekend organiser Kay Hannam of Wai-natur.
By Annabelle Latz There’s no rules for the number of holes on Wairau Valley’s golf course at the nude golf tournament. The Wai-natur Naturist Park held its sixth annual nude golf tournament at Waitangi weekend, and drew participants from all around the globe. Kay Hannam has been running the nudist park in the valley with partner Brian Williams since 2006. She said the annual golf tournament is a great excuse for old friends to get together, and share their common passion. “People come for the golf and stay at our place every year, and some free range nudists come, who like to be nude just on special occasions. About 35 naturist enthusiasts turned up for the weekend, which included one day of golf, and another day, “Nudie Foodies’ of lunch, a boat ride and walking in The Marlborough Sounds.
She said the usual precautions for a hot Marlborough weekend were taken into account, like good doses of sunscreen. “Hats are more important than pants.” Kay and Brian have been involved with naturism for many years, and were based in Tekapo before moving to Wairau Valley, where they also held golf tournaments. There is a history of strong international representation from The Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and the UK. Globally, careers holding the biggest representation among naturists is the Air Force, and care giving. “There’s a lot to be said for stripping off your clothes and your stress.” Dave Care has been living at Wai-Natur Naturist Park for six years now, but unfortunately missed this year’s festivities. The retiree still had a few words to share about his passion.
“It’s a feeling of oneness with nature.” Dave said nudity is so natural for him, he sometimes has to double check he’s remembered to get dressed. “I could jump in the car to come to town and forget I have no clothes on, it’s just so normal to me.” Dave plays golf with clothes on and off, but said he takes it more seriously when his clothes are on. “Without clothes people seem to be more out there to enjoy themselves.” This year’s golf competition was won by Fran Johnson from the UK; the first time for 10 years of competition that the winning trophy will be heading offshore. Kay was thrilled with the support of this month’s event, and hopes to recruit even more international interest next year. “The places people come from is always a nice surprise,” she said.

Throttle on at Flat Track Series Story by Celeste Lodewyk It’s full throttle time again, as the Fairweathers Flat Track Series gets set to tear into action beginning with its first round on March 4. Last year’s Series was a huge success according to organisers, but this year it will be held earlier in the hope of avoiding bad weather. Entries are currently being taken and already riders from as far as Christchurch have registered for all three rounds. Local rider Brad Millar who is also helping organisers says the Marlborough Motorcycle Club is eager to see more riders register. “Last year’s event went really with over 300 riders taking part over the whole series, a number we would love to improve on so make sure you don’t miss out,” he says.
This year riders will enjoy fast and flowing courses which will be irrigated to keep dust down. Series One will be held March 4 at the Delany’s property in Linkwater. Series Two will be held March 25 at the MacDonald’s property at North Bank. Series Three will be held April 8 at the Brownlee’s property in Havelock. Classes available range from a mini’s support class for riders as young as four-years, through to the more competitive classes featuring all ages and genders. Each of the three Series events will be open to the public. For more information visit the website www.mmcc.co.nz or visit their Facebook page.
