Progress for 2 High St By Annabelle Latz The main focus will be on accessibility, greenery, and an inviting central business area. That was the overall opinion on what 2 High St in Blenheim should look like. Yesterday, Marlborough District Council’s Community and Financial Planning Committee met to decide on the next step forward for the Urban Design Concept for the green space by the amphitheatre by the Taylor River at the end of Market St. There were three options proposed by Architect Tim Barton, who promoted the area as a key part of the town’s business area to
encourage vitality and a space where people will meet. The preferred option, Option 2, will include more terraces with steps just 45cm, as opposed to the current steps of 60cm. The existing steps will be rebuilt to blend in with the proposed wooden boardwalk that has a gradual decline down to the Taylor River bank. The existing amphitheatre will also remain, as will the bridge across the river. There were suggestions that the proposed artistic feature will be designed by someone local, there should be particular attention paid to the gradient of the ramp leading to
the river, and that the surface of the ramp and river be slip-safe. The area between the green space and the carpark has been allocated for a narrow onestorey building. Mayor Alistair Sowman said it will provide an attractive view for people driving along the highway. “This is our one chance to get this right. We can capitalise on the proposed building to pay for the landscaping.” Further decisions about funding and time frames have to be worked out, with a commercial proposal to help fund the landscape work.

2008 BABY: cooper crighton. By Celeste Lodewyk He is crafty, artistic, a protective brother and makes the most delectable chocolate chip biscuits, and to wrap it all up he was Blenheim’s first baby born in 2008. Cooper Crighton is your typical four-year-old boy, he loves getting amongst the trucks and tractors with his father and at times can prove “challenging like most boys”, says mother Nadia, but when he hears the food processor start up he heads straight to the kitchen to put on his chef’s apron and is ready to cook. “I don’t know if it’s because he used to be strapped in the front pack as a baby when I was cooking, but he loves to cook and his chocolate chip cookies are famous within the family,” Nadia laughs. Cooper was born on January 2, 2008 at 11:50am in a race to win the title of the New Year baby. “There was another mother who wanted to be the first and who had the name Cooper picked out as well, so we were lucky to beat her to the mark,” Nadia says. Cooper is adored by his older sister Lexi-Lou (5) and is very protective and loving of his newest sibling Addilane (8 weeks).

A moderate La Niña is in place in the tropical Pacific and should persist into early autumn 2012, before fading back to neutral conditions. The NIWA National Climate Centre’s outlook for early Autumn, February to April 2012, indicates that seasonal rainfalls and temperatures are likely to be near normal for Marlbrough, Buller and Nelson. Soil moisture levels and river flows are predicted to be near normal as well.

The skies were cloudy and the temperature slightly cooler for Saturday’s Blues, Brews and BBQ’s festival, but for the near 4000 who took to the A&P Showgrounds it was a great day out. Festival convenor Graeme Boon was full of praise when the Sun spoke to him yesterday, stating he was pleased with how well the day ran. “From a running point of view we were really happy with Saturday’s event. The entertainment was well received and the feedback
we received reflected the crowd’s spirit. “The behaviour of the crowd has been great and we thank festivalgoers for that,” he says. Crowd puller, Opshop had the crowd well and truly entranced and in return reported back a positive experience. “When we spoke with the band afterwards they were very happy with the venue and sound system and seemed to enjoy the crowd,” Graeme says. Amongst the many local faces
and imaginative costumes were a number of out of town visitors who visited specifically for the festival. One group of friends visiting from Christchurch blended in well with their ‘Shaky Pirates’ costume, after arriving in Picton on their private launch to enjoy the festival on “steady ground”. “The ground is a lot steadier here, jokes (pink pirate) Sheree Taylor, and we are loving being here at the festival. It’s been great seeing what others have come dressed as.” See our photos on page 16.

Watch that power bill By Annabelle Latz Compare your power company’s monthly charges to other companies. You might be paying more than you need to be. On February 17 Contact Energy customers here will be paying nine percent more for their power. This is an unavoidable situation, according to the company. Contact Energy spokesman Jeremy Seed said its prices are still very reasonable, and he is confident customers will stay with Contact Energy because of the good service it provides. “It is obviously not something we do willingly, and we are conscious that people can shop around.” Prices increase because of industry increases; the cost of generating electricity, the transmission of electricity through the National Grid, and the Retail cost of managing customers. “We have to meet these realities.” Scott O’Donnell is project manager for Switchme, a website designed for easy price comparisons for consumers. He said a family of four in Blenheim using around 900kwh per month with one single electricity meter can expect an

increase of approximately $200 per year on their household electricity bills with Contact Energy. Scott said by using Switchme, consumers could save up to $45 per month. www.swtitchme.co.nz or phone 0800 179 482. He said it is important for consumers to keep up to date with price changes between companies. “The biggest reason consumers stay with their current provider
is that they are unaware of the options they have.” Tiny Mighty opened its doors in Blenheim in November 2010. Manager Toby Warren agreed that every power company has to keep its prices in line with increased running costs, but expected consumers to shop around more now. “We expect customers who are faced with a price increase would consider switching to us.”
Headstone vandal sought By Annabelle Latz She just wants to know who damaged her late husband’s headstone. Beverley Prebble was in tears most of Christmas Day, which was also her 75th birthday, when she visited her late husband Allan Clifford’s grave at Fairhall Cemetery to discover it had been extensively damaged. “It has had one hell of a whack, because it’s one big headstone.” Beverley does not know exactly what hit the headstone, but there are big chips out of the top and one side, which has been there since the beginning of 2008. The headstone has also been partially knocked off its base, then pushed back straight. “It was a big enough bang to unhinge the headstone from the bottom.” The person responsible for damaging the headstone needs to own up, and Beverley also wants to know who is liable for the repairs. She wants this done as soon as possible, because the headstone and the plot are being used both for her and their son as well.

Who or what is the cause of these chips in this headstone at Fairhall Cemetary? Beverley Prebble wants this question answered about her late husband Allan’s headstone.
“It’s got to be sorted out now because there are two more of us to go in there.” Beverley’s name and her son’s name, who is also Allan, are already engraved on the headstone. “It just needs our birth and death dates added, because our ashes are going in there too.” Beverley has already organised a new plot in the cemetery where the headstone and her husband’s ashes will be moved to in the next
few days. She said the corner plot used at the moment is too liable to damage. “I have to have some help here, because the damage to this headstone is not my fault.” She has spoken with Marlborough District Council and Sowman Funeral Directors, and they are currently working together to work out responsibility and cost for the headstone damage.

wine festival ticket sales strong Ticket sales for Marlborough Wine and Food Festival this weekend are looking good, with a predicted total of 8000 people. “We are looking for a really great crowd, and the weather should be fine, which is a bonus,” said Wine Marlborough General Manager Marcus Pickens. Traditionally, locals tend to wait until the last minute to buy their tickets, so Marcus expects a ‘spike’ in numbers this week. The festival this Saturday, held at Brancott Estate Vineyard, includes 60 wineries on site, hundreds of wines, 30 food stalls, wine tutorials and Fashion in the Vines. The festival is the largest event of its kind in New Zealand, and the longest running. Tickets are available from www. ticketdirect.co.nz or 0800 224 224.
warehouse pharmacy doors still open The pharmacy at the Warehouse will remain open until March 30. Plans for the pharmacy from April onwards are still in negotiation. Management will have a better idea about the future later this month. The Blenheim community has been very supportive about the Warehouse pharmacy, and businesses and locals are working hard to keep its doors open.
McCormick’s winning window The prize was four tickets for the festival and a case of mixed wine. Mitchells Sports with Charles Wiffen Wines took third place, and won two festival tickets and a case of mixed wine. Spot prizes of bottles of wine were also given away. Rhonda George is manager at McCormick and Co, and had lots of fun creating the display, which she described as “something fun and different.” She was hopeful they would be one of the favourites. “I felt we had done an amazing job.” Rhonda had the factor of class in mind when she put her creative hat on. “It was champagne and diamonds, what more could you ask for?”
Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Shop windows in Blenheim have been looking particularly festive lately. The Wine and Food Festival Window Display has raised some strong competition between local businesses, supported by the Chamber of Commerce. There were 22 entrants, who were teamed up with local wineries to create a window display that expressed strong visual, informative and creative qualities. Taking first prize was McCormick and Co, teamed with No 1 Family Estate. The prize was six tickets to the festival this weekend and a case of mixed wine. Second prize went to Thomas’ Menswear, a window display with Fromm.

Rebel Sport coming soon By Annabelle Latz Attention to all those who like to buy sports gear. Rebel Sport is coming to Blenheim. Last month Briscoe Group handed a resource application to Marlborough District Council,
for a proposed development of the giant sport gear store in the town. Briscoe Group is the umbrella company for Rebel Sport. Group Managing Director, Briscoe Group, Rod Duke, said everything is in the early stages,
but Blenheim has been an attractive location for a Rebel Sport store for a long time. “The people of Blenheim want it, and we really want to go there.” Rod Duke has been receiving letters from Marlborough resi-

Former pupils now teachers Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Renwick School holds a very special significance to its two newest teachers Jemma Herd and Phillip Johnson. Students returned to Renwick School last Monday all eager to meet their classmates and teachers, but no-one was more eager than Jemma and Phillip. Jemma and Phillip are former pupils of the school from years 1992 to 2000 and later returned for their teaching placements before graduating. For Jemma her room nine class will be her third so her nerves were barely noticeable when the Sun caught up with them both last week. “I didn’t really have any nerves walking through the gates on the first school day, but it’s always fun getting to know your new students. “Renwick School is such a family orientated school and the support we have received from staff has been great,” Jemma smiles.

“Teaching for me is an opportunity to provide kids with a male role model and it’s a great feeling knowing you are passing on knowledge and

New rooms for Seniornet Wanting to keep their brains active and meet new people, Christchurch couple Mary and Roger Coppard joined Seniornet Marlborough after relocating to Blenheim. “We only just bought a computer two years ago so it was a great way to gain the skills we needed,” says Mary. “Plus it has been a great social activity,” laughs Roger. Mary and Roger were amongst Senior net Marlborough members who attended the official opening of their new rooms on January 26, in the Marlborough Club flat adjoining the Clubs of Marlborough.

A long couple of days
Ben Minehan and Paul Bourgeois have put in the hard yards, so this week is all about rest and saving their energy for this weekend’s Speights Coast to Coast. They’re competing in the two-day teams event, and will be amongst other Marlborough multi-sporters also taking part in the legendary event.
Story and photo by Annabelle Latz The Speights Coast to Coast is a bit of a family affair for this wine maker and bio security officer. Paul Bourgeois and Ben Minehan have been biking, paddling and running their way to Speights Coast to Coast preparation for 12 months. Training for kayak and mountain running events is nothing new for the pair, and this is the fourth time Paul will be gracing the start line for this weekend’s legendary multi sport event. Paul is a well established paddler, with regular top place finish spots at kayak competitions. He competed in the team’s event of the Coast to Coast in 2003, 2004 and 2006, his loyal team mate being Ben’s wife Melody Wing. So this year, on the event’s 30th anniversary, it’s a day for the men, and they can’t thank their wives enough for all the support. “The hardest thing is juggling family and training,” said Paul. Q: What are your thoughts on the recent dog attacks?
Craig McKeown Blenheim
Dave Craill Blenheim

Gareth Smith Blenheim
Emma Logan Blenheim
George Addis Blenheim
They’re terrible. It’s more the owners than the dogs. Probably screening dog owners and what they own would be good.
I think there are dangerous breeds. The owners supervision is to blame. I think they need to legislate against particular breeds.
It’s a big problem. I just think the owners need to be held more accountable. No dog is born ‘bad’, it is how it’s treated.
I think it comes down to being aware of what is around you. Training dogs is imperative.
I think if they bite they should be put down as they are a danger. Dogs should be muzzled.
They should be better controlled. If dog owners can’t control their dogs properly they shouldn’t have them.

Smoking in public places list goes on. It’s a case of taking a big deep breath before you walk past these places at times. I myself reckon the one on Wynen St should be nicknamed the “Smokers Barn”. It’s a pity our council couldn’t do something about it. Like make the smokers clean up their own mess. Better still bring in the ‘no smoking in public places’. Non-smoker, Blenheim.

John Bertrand Collectables in the Marlborough Region
W
ith buyers from John Bertrand (Collectables) in the Marlborough region this week, Mr Tony Grant from the company says “now is a fantastic opportunity to go through those drawers and cupboards and dig out those unwanted items and turn them into cash” Especially wanted by the buyers is Old Gold and Collectables such as Military Medals, Old Coins & Banknotes, Vintage Watches and and any interesting old items.
Gold & Silver At Near Record Prices
W
ith gold at an historical high in New Zealand, right now would be an opportune time to go through the old jewellery box and dig out those old gold chains, rings and brooches and turn them into cash. Tony Grant says “Now is a great time to sell. We will buy anything made of gold – old jewellery, coins, alluvial (river gold), virtually anything, even gold teeth! We also need sterling silver in any form, including cups, tea services, cutlery, old coins and the like” he said.
“We are keen buyers, especially of the items in the list below” said Mr Grant. “Everyone has something we want to buy and nothing is too small for our consideration. We are just as happy to buy one item as we are buying 1000 items”. The buyers will be in convenient locations around the area this week. See Mr Anthony (Tony) below for your nearest W. Grant location. If you are in the Royal Numismatic Society of doubt about any items Fellow ofNew Zealand Incorporated you wish to sell, take Director and Buyer John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd them in for an instant Author of the Premier NZ Coin & Banknote appraisal. Rolex and Vintage Watches Wanted
re 1950’s mechanical watches are needed urgently by the buyers from John Bertrand (Collectables), visiting the Marlborough region this week. “Collectors at this stage want brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Vacheron & Constantin just to mention some. These brands can command large prices depending on the condition, what they are made of etc. Many of the other brands are only required for parts. “In any event we will buy any mechanical watch, even if its only a few dollars for parts” said Tony Grant, buyer for the company. Battery operated watches are not needed. “If you are unsure just bring any watches to us at the venues and have them appraised” he said.

Huge Demand for Military Medals
C
urrently, throughout the world there is a very big demand by collectors for Military Medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the Military Medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars. General service medals from both the First and Second World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group of medals has any special award for bravery such as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables). “Many families have old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure what to do with. We will be happy to look at any Military Medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.
Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes
arly New Zealand Banknotes dated before 1932 are currently fetching big money! This is according to Mr Tony Grant, author of the Premier Catalogue of New Zealand Coins and Banknotes. Mr Grant is in the Marlborough region this week on a buying trip for John Bertrand (Collectables) and would be very keen to see any of these issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any undamaged Ten
Shilling or One Pound banknote from a New Zealand trading bank dated 1932 or before. Denominations of five pounds and higher would be worth from $700. “Any banknote dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant. Also purchased are any Reserve Bank of New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas banknotes prior to the 1950’s are also wanted.

Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity
C
heck those drawers and cupboards, you may have a rarity lurking amongst your coins. This advice from Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables). “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations put together before 1950. We will be quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up! New Zealand silver coins up to 1946 will be purchased at 20 times their face value.

Relax at The Winery Riverlands Delicious is a great word to describe the experience at The Winery Riverlands with its great food, Marlborough wines and wonderful architecture providing a relaxed dining atmosphere. The landmark winery of our Marlborough region, sits just south of Blenheim on State Highway One in Riverlands. Although the local community are well aware of this iconic winery and the popular restaurant, it’s the extent of the function rooms for weddings or gala events, and private meeting facilities that make The Winery Riverlands one of the leading function venues in the South Island. Originally the Montana Winery and made famous as the home of the first Marlborough sauvignon blanc, the property is today the Pernod Ricard New Zealand winery with a cellar door and The Winery Riverlands restaurant and functions centre. Chef Julie Robinson, who has been with the restaurant since it’s time as Montana, has developed a reputation for her menus which showcase the best of local cuisine. Seafood, beef and lamb, along with our seasonal fruit and vegetables, are all carefully selected to create the dishes, and Julie’s understanding of the Marlborough wines is also apparent, as her food is always presented with a Marlborough wine match. You can see her latest restaurant menus on www.thewinery.co.nz.

By Annabelle Latz It was fond memories and laughter that filled Carmel Hancock’s St Mary’s School 30-year reunion weekend with happiness. She was in Form Two in 1982, and it has taken four years of planning to organise her classmates together to remember thirty years ago. Just over 30 people attended the festivities at the weekend, including former teachers, and their principal Clive Sullivan with his wife Joan. They spent Friday night at Ye Old Malthouse, Saturday was at St Mary’s Parish Centre and drinks at the Secret Garden, and Sunday involved a tour around the school and a BBQ. “These sorts of things don’t happen very often, and our story might encourage more people to have class reunions,” said Carmel. She already has another date in mind, for 2017. “Someone said we should do it in 10 years’ time, but I think that is too far away.”

Pedalling for a good cause
Story and photo by Annabelle Latz It will soon be easier to hear the announcers at the Nelson speedway, thanks to Peter Hooson, as he biked from Blenheim to Picton for a worthy cause on Sunday. The Blenheim resident is a familiar face around the town, spending most days delivering newspapers and pamphlets to people’s letterboxes on his pushbike, which he has down to a fine art. “I like to get them delivered on time.” Attending the speedway at Eastern States in Renwick and Nelson is a favourite past time of Peters, and he wants to raise $600 for a new microphone for the Nelson track. “It will just help the announcers out. They need one when they are talking because there’s lots of noise and it’s hard to hear what they are saying.” Peter spread the word around the speedway world that he was taking off from his Blenheim home to Picton foreshore last Sunday morning. He raised about $60 from his weekend’s effort, and is confident he’s got enough interest going for more club members to do their bit to raise the rest. It took him just over three hours to ride from Blenheim to Picton, and he stopped by the waterfront to watch some ferries come in while he ate his lunch. “The weather was nice and cool, which was great because hot weather makes it difficult to bike.” He’s done a few bike rides to Picton for good causes, recently raising enough money for the Eastern States so they could Peter Hooson biked from Blenheim to Picton on Sunday morning, to buy a new safety fence. help the Nelson Speedway Club raise money for a new microphone. It’s “They all say ‘Good on you!” not the first time Peter has strapped up his bike helmet for a good cause.

Reeling in the dollars By Annabelle Latz The Crow Tavern Fishing Competition held last month was a successful one. This is a fact that organisers can enjoy, now that results and numbers have been crunched from the day’s festivities. With 190 entrants this year, competition was solid and support for the local charities was strong. Larry Ibell has been involved in organising the competition for many years, and was thrilled with the money they raised from this year’s competition for local charities. Saturday’s and Sunday’s auctions, January 21 and 22, raised $3000. It was divided between Marlborough Child Cancer Foundation and the Memorial/ Endeavour Park Emergency Centre in Picton. “It’s fantastic. Half of whatever we get always goes to the cancer foundation.”

Green fingers save money Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Given the effect of the global recession, there is an increasing emphasis on the need for people to be less wasteful with money, and be more resourceful when it comes to trimming the weekly household budget. This is something many Marlborough residents and families are already accustomed to, but for those who are themselves starting to feel the pinch and don’t know where to start, the Sun caught up with Blenheim man Philip Hayward who shares his advice from the point of view of a home gardener who lives within a budget. “I have always been interested in growing vegetable gardens so when food prices began to climb I knew it would be wise to start growing as much as I could in order to cut the food bill,” he says. Walking around Philip’s back garden it is obvious that every available space is put to use, whether it’s to hold home built compost bins and wooden planter boxes with budding lettuces, or to sprout fruit trees and vegetable beds. “I used to get wooden pallets for firewood but I soon realised that it could be even more useful, so I started building outdoor furniture and using it to build compost bins. “Now I am in the habit of recycling what ever I
can, right from household food scraps to garden and lawn clippings. Despite recent cold weather hampering vegetable growth, Philip is still pleased with the amount of savings made on his food budget and maintains that he prefers to eat organically from his own garden. “I make apricot jam and marmalade from the left over fruit off my trees and I rarely need to buy vegetables around this time of year. I might only need to buy a little bit of fruit produce, otherwise having a garden has been a great budgeting tool,” he says. Another added benefit of having “green fingers” is the physical and mental wellbeing one achieves from spending time in the garden. “My late mother had a theory, when you have your hands out in the garden you absorb the nutrients through our fingers. “She also believed it was good for the mind, especially for people who feel stressed or are struggling with mental health issues,” Philip says. Complimenting his enthusiasm for gardening, Philip completed a horticulture degree through the Open Polytechnic in 2009 and says ideally he would love to work fulltime in the industry. “I could easily see myself working in amongst council gardens or in a garden centre, my talents would be well suited,” he smiles.
LIVING ON A BUDGET: Philip Hayward relaxes in his home garden which is rich in fruit, vegetables and recycled wooden furniture. Philip believes having green fingers can save you money and benefit your wellbeing.
