Progress for 2 High St By Annabelle Latz The main focus will be on accessibility, greenery, and an inviting central business area. That was the overall opinion on what 2 High St in Blenheim should look like. Yesterday, Marlborough District Council’s Community and Financial Planning Committee met to decide on the next step forward for the Urban Design Concept for the green space by the amphitheatre by the Taylor River at the end of Market St. There were three options proposed by Architect Tim Barton, who promoted the area as a key part of the town’s business area to
encourage vitality and a space where people will meet. The preferred option, Option 2, will include more terraces with steps just 45cm, as opposed to the current steps of 60cm. The existing steps will be rebuilt to blend in with the proposed wooden boardwalk that has a gradual decline down to the Taylor River bank. The existing amphitheatre will also remain, as will the bridge across the river. There were suggestions that the proposed artistic feature will be designed by someone local, there should be particular attention paid to the gradient of the ramp leading to
the river, and that the surface of the ramp and river be slip-safe. The area between the green space and the carpark has been allocated for a narrow onestorey building. Mayor Alistair Sowman said it will provide an attractive view for people driving along the highway. “This is our one chance to get this right. We can capitalise on the proposed building to pay for the landscaping.” Further decisions about funding and time frames have to be worked out, with a commercial proposal to help fund the landscape work.
