London’s calling By Emily Elliott He said he has always wanted to be King of the Jungle, and now the talented local is getting a chance. In between his theatre studies at Toi Whakaari in Wellington and preparing to intern at West End in London, Blenheim-boy Tom Knowles has been flying back and forward to auditions, in hopes of making it into world renowned show, The Lion King in Sydney. “I only auditioned to be a company singer, but then they sent me a recall for Ed the Hyena, as well as an understudy for Timon and Zazu,” Tom said. “It’s an awesome opportunity and would be a good starting block, and I’d get to work with professionals in a professional industry.” Continued page 2

Fish farm decision disappoints By Chris Tobin The Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) Board of Inquiry draft decision announced yesterday allowing four new salmon farms but declining five others in the Marlborough Sounds has been met with disappointment on both sides. Grant Rosewarne chief executive of the company behind the proposal, NZ King Salmon which wanted nine farms, said it was a missed opportunity for Marlborough, Nelson and the country. The Greens Party said it was a “worrying precedent” and “extremely disappointing,” while Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman expressed concern the Marlborough District Council did not have the chance to consider the proposal through its resource management plan. However, M r Sowma n added that since the board had recommended four new sites

for approval, the council would work alongside King Salmon. “We look forward to engaging with the company, particularly to hear more about its plans for job expansion in Marlborough.” He said the council would also have to consider the precedent setting implications of the draft decision on future aquaculture activity in the Sounds. Mr Rosewarne said commerce and conservation could exist together in the Sounds and he was disappointed the chances to bring jobs to the region had

been lost. “ We h ave m i s s e d a n opportunity to bring more than 370 new jobs to the top of the south and support local businesses across a wide range of categories.” He said the company would review its strategy. “We’re able to comment on minor or technical aspects of the report before the board’s final decision is issued in February.” Green Party MP Stefan Browning said the four new farms approved by the EPA

The EPA’s boa rd of inquiry draft report and decision has approved farms at Papatua, Ngamahau, Waitata and Richmond. Farms declined are: Kaitapeha, Ruaomoko, Kaitira, Tapipi and White Horse Farm. The board’s final decision will be made on or before February 22, 2013. were in prohibited zones. “The decision will set a precedent allowing companies to buld marine farms aynwhere on New Zealand’s coastline.”

Tom bound for London

Continued from page one Tom used to love watching The Lion King as a kid, and believes it would be an experience to be a part of the show. “It would be fun to be something other than human for eight shows a week!” he said. Although the actor is excited about what could come from the auditions, he said it is only early days. Five days after his second audition in Auckland, Tom is flying to London for an acting internship before next semester starts. “I’ll be working on West End

and working on some shows, as well as meeting loads of people.” Tom recently did a workshop with the musical director of Mary Poppins, who has given him some people to see and work with in London. Tom is lucky to have connections in London already, with his tutor a friend of famous musical director, Andrew Lloyd Webber. “I’m hoping to experience the professional musical world and find out what I have to do to get to their musical standard,” said Tom. “I want to learn, I’ll be able to meet the agents, and hopefully

get one!” Heading into his third year at Wellington’s Toi Whakari, Tom is excited about the next year. Tom said if he is successful in getting into The Lion King, he will have to take a year leave and move to Australia, which is something his studies allow him to do. “The point of my degree is to get work in the industry. Things are popping up earlier than expected!” Tom will be having a fundraising concert for his internship at Marlborough Boys’ College on January 12.

Council responds to Taylor River claims The people of Blenheim could make an enormous difference to the quality of the water flowing through the Taylor River by taking more care about what gets poured down stormwater drains, says Marlborough District Council environmental scientist Peter Hamill. In last Friday’s Sun, Blenheim man Craig Grant lamented that trout fishing in the Taylor River wasn’t as good as it used to be, suggesting that the town’s rivers were increasingly polluted. Mr Hamill said it was important for people to understand that the Taylor was in an urban catchment area and what people put into the stormwater system affected water quality. “Our local schoolchildren who promote the Fish in Drains scheme are onto this, pushing out the message that stormwater drains are for rainwater only – not for detergents and oils and all the other chemicals that too often get flushed into the gutters. “Now it’s the adults who need to pick up their message.” He said Mr Grant was incorrect suggesting that a council programme of spraying waterweed was causing fish stocks to deplete. “The last time there was any spraying in the Taylor River was approximately five years ago and that was only a small area targeted because it was hard to reach with the weed rake which the council now uses to clear waterways of excess weed at certain times of the season.” “Mechanical clearing is the method used rather than chemical spraying,” he said. Mr Hamill said that Fish and Game did not do any fish counts of trout numbers in the Taylor River but anecdotal feedback from people like Mr Grant suggested that trout numbers had reduced in many rivers around the country. “No one seems to be certain of the cause but trout certainly do need pristine waterways – they’re a species that is very sensitive to pollution,” he said. Mr Hamill said the district council had identified the Taylor and Doctor’s Creek, along with the Opawa, Are Are Creek and Mill Stream, as the waterways that should get priority for work to improve water quality. Earlier this year the council decided that one of the important first steps would be to improve the riparian zones along these waterways. Mr Hamill said Mr Grant’s claims about fish depletion did not seem to apply to native fish populations. “Our own surveys of indigenous species show that

these fish numbers are holding steady. The Taylor and the Lower Opawa, for example, are very important habitats for our inanga – in fact they’re one of the strongholds for that species in this region.” Another big influence on water quality had been naturally occurring sedimentation which Mr Hamill said was the result of shifting gravel caused by recent floods. “Given the far higher than average floods we’ve experienced in the last few years it may be some time before the Taylor and Opawa settle down again.”

Mayor Alistair Sowman said it was well known many other parts of the country had water quality problems which far exceeded Marlborough’s but councillors also knew that more could be done to improve matters here. “Two years ago I called for clean streams and rivers and coastlines to become one of this council’s priorities and we are making progress. “Our rural waterways near dairy herds have had most of the attention so far but we want our urban waterways to come up to standard too – and that means changing the habits of many town residents.”

Petrol & road user charges to rise Petrol tax and road user charges to increase The Government will increase petrol excise duty by three cents a litre on 1 July 2013, 1 July 2014 and 1 July 2015, Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee says. Road user charges will also be increased by an equivalent amount. Mr Brownlee says the increases are required to deliver the Roads of National Significance (RoNS) programme and other roading projects to the timeline set out in the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport Funding 2012. mitchell sports World staff members libby smith-Kapralos and gareth smith with a small section of the store's wide range of products.

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce today announced her appointment this week, along with the naming of Michael Ahie to Massey University Council, and Ian Fitzgerald to the University of Waikato Council.

Last man standing By Robbie Parkes Mitchell Sports World owner Robin Mitchell considers himself the last man standing when it comes to Blenheim’s small sporting goods businesses. The closure of Stirling Sports on the corner of Market St and Maxwell Rd, and the opening of chain store Rebel Sport just a few doors down in the last two weeks has certainly impacted on the long-established retailer. “Obviously there will be a huge impact

because of the cross-over, but there are areas they do that we do not want to do,” he said. “Because we’re conscious of our areas of expertise. “In this business, there’s lots of areas you can get sidetracked in.” Mitchell Sports for instance, does not sell non-technical footwear (street and casual shoes) but uses Gate Analysis when selling shoes and trainers. Using a treadmill, staff video how a customer runs with the shoes and provides the appropriate footwear.

“We have a large variety which just means we offer more choice.” Mitchell Sports has had a presence in Blenheim for the last 50 years, and over that period, Robin said a number of small sports stores have gone under. “There’s been a few, they were all reasonably long established businesses.” “Sporting goods has never been that profitable a business.” There are low margins with high expectations he said. “We don’t have an executive market in Marlborough.”

With Stirling Sports closing, Robin said he has picked up most of that business, but is also tapping into fringe areas of Nelson. He said Rebel Sport coming to town does have a lot of short term impacts for them, but in the long run, they will come out all right. “We are very busy, and we have very experienced staff.” Robin estimates between them, they have about 150 years experience in the industry. He said they were reasonably optimistic heading into Christmas.

A logging firm, Blacklaws Logging Limited, has been fined $86,400 and ordered to pay $65,000 in reparation following the death of a worker whilst working in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. The company has ceased trading since the accident, and because there are limited funds left in its account, it will only have to pay $20,000 of the fine imposed. The company’s insurance company will pay the full reparations to the victim’s family. The Blenheim District Court heard that on 17 February last year the owner of the company and two employees were contracted to fell trees on Glenlee Station using chainsaws and an excavator. Prior to starting work, a dead branch had been identified that rested across the upper canopy of three trees due to be felled. When the workers started on one of the trees that the branch rested across, the excavator operator started to push it before the chainsaw operator was out of the danger area. The dead branch then became dislodged and a piece broke off, hitting and injuring the chainsaw operator who later died at the scene.

Clean swamp up now At the risk of prolonging the media attention to this SH 1 disgrace, may I suggest (or rather ask) the people of Marlborough to keep writing to the Sun to express disdain for the arrogance of Fish & Game and the side-stepping accountability and responsibility shown by their resident Field Officer, Vaughn Lynn in the response through this paper. As a ‘field officer’ may I ask that you tend your field (swamp) duly armed with a chainsaw and sundry equipment to clean up the unsightly mess you, yourself, have confessed to making. Twenty years is a very long time to wait to have this mess restored given the willows you poisoned are now regenerating.

We wish you all the merriest of Christmas!

Putting this into perspective, 20 years is enough time for someone born today to vote, go to war, drive a car, enter Parliament and obtain a gun licence so they can do what you intend to do and that’s shoot wild life in your newly (sic) created habitat. Bomber provides spectacular show By Robbie Parkes The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre’s Bombers and Biplanes Fundraising Day on Saturday saw a wide variety of classic aircraft hit the skies, but none more spectacular than the Avro Anson Mk 1 twin-engined bomber. The veteran aircraft arrived in Blenheim a month ago, and is the only Mk 1 flying anywhere in the world. Wakefield couple, Bill and Robyn Reid found the bomber in Australia more than 10 years ago, gradually restoring it over the last decade. It was the aircraft’s debut at a South Island event on the weekend, a milestone in itself, with event organiser and Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre trustee Graham Orphan reiterating it was “like opening a time capsule.” “I don’t think people were quite ready for it to be here, it was quite a significant thing.” The fact it is right here in Marlborough, and even in New Zealand is amazing, he said. He said other Mk 1’s had been restored and exhibited in museums around the world, but never to this degree of detail.

“And that’s just an issue of absolute obsession. “It had to be one hundred per cent or nothing. “When the aeroplane came to New Zealand I got to see the starting point, and I watched as Bill and his team went about this restoration in such an extraordinary way.” Bill said the steps in restoring the aircraft had been quite long, but well worth it. He estimates there were about 5,000 manufacturers’ documents, and 100 manuals involved and read over in the process of piecing it all together. He said the hardest thing was the fact there was no sequence of assembly indicated in the documents, so there was a large proportion of trial and error in getting everything fitted into the appropriate place. However, the flight at the weekend was an “amazing” reward, he said. “It was just awesome. “Basically we tried to get all the volunteers who had helped over the 10 years, on the plane. “There was probably 100 people involved but certainly the ones there on the day got

Picton Rotary raises $1000 A total of $1000 was raised by Picton Rotary in a Christmas hamper competition the club organised. Club spokesman Brian Henstock said the money would be used for community projects and to sponsor student activities. The winner of the hamper was Christine Bugler and Mr Henstock said Rotary members were pleased she won. “Christine is known as a community minded lady who is generous with her time for charity work.” Picton businesses assisted in contributing to the hamper which was valued at more than $700.

Christine Bugler, husband Lloyd and grandchildren Zachary, Zia-rose and Zofia Dixon are delighted with their big win.

outlet. “There were no special favours in place for Rebel Sports.” He said Armourguard monitored the town’s carparks and after a call from the public at 11am they checked out the Wynen St ticketing meter machine which was found to have a flat battery. This was quickly remedied and by 11.45am shoppers were having to pay for their parking once more. “I have no idea how long the meter was out for prior to the notification,” Mr Heiford said.

In the United Kingdom, Black Friday is traditionally the most popular night for office Christmas parties. As a result it has gained a reputation as one of the busiest nights of the year for restaurants, public houses, and, as a result, the emergency services. In Cumbria, England, Black Friday is known as Black Eye Friday, due to extremely high number of fights that break out in bars, pubs and clubs in the area.

sports talk

2012 – a big year for NZ rowing New Zealand rowing is flying high at the moment and the good times look likely to keep on rolling. The sport has just been allocated the biggest slice of funding from High Performance Sport NZ to carry it through the next three years. Rowing is to receive $18.4 million, or $4.6m per annum. The next big shakers in the funding stakes are cycling (the sport will receive $15.6m) and yachting ($11.2m). With this announcement, the best ever Olympics for our rowers has now been backed up by the funding powers that be. And during the week also, Rob Waddell, Olympic gold medal sculler at the 2000 Sydney

Olympics, was named the new chef de mission for the Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams. This is an added fillip for the sport and on top of the three golds and two bronze medals our rowers brought home from the London Olympics. Don’t be surprised either if sculler Mahe Drysdale becomes NZ Sportsman of the Year when our most prestigious sports awards, the Halbergs, are held in February. I would rate Drysdale’s win in London as my sports highlight of the year. He had to handle enormous mental pressure, partly to expunge the disappointment of the Beijing Olympics when he was ill, but also he had to live up to the

hopes, expectations and predictions lumped on him by us, the great Kiwi public. In London at times he must have felt a couple of bears had jumped on his back. Yet he came through superbly - and courageously. Other rowers could be clutching a couple of Halberg statuettes come February also. I think the Halbergs 2012 Team of the Year will come down to a contest between Olympic champions Nathan Cohen and Picton’s pride Joseph Sullivan versus Eric Murray and Hamish Bond. The judges might toss a coin in the end to decide that one. And rowing coach Richard Tonks must be a strong contender for

BlacK caps win warmup The Black Caps have won their warmup Twenty20 match against South Africa A in Pietermartizburg. The New Zealand cricketers beat the home side by 24 runs, with the Black Caps batting first and scoring 140 for 8. The first Twenty20 International against South Africa in Durban on Friday night.

NZ coach of the year at the Halbergs as well. Yes, 2012 has been a year for the rowers. Before signing off, it was good to see the Black Caps start their South African tour with a win, given the recent debacle that has unfolded in the ranks of NZ Cricket. A bunch of rookies helped them to a 24-run Twenty20 win over South Africa A. Let’s hope it continues.

ASB is extending its support of communities across the Top of the South Island with a new three-year partnership with Sport Tasman. Announcing the new partnership last month, ASB regional manager Kevin Manera said the bank is pleased to be working with an organisation that shares their strong community values. “ASB has a very long history of community involvement so we are pleased to be partnering with Sport Tasman as they work to encourage and grow grassroots sport and recreation at all levels and ages across the Nelson-Tasman region.” Sport Tasman CEO Nigel Muir said the announcement heralded exciting times ahead for the organisation “As a charitable trust we are reliant

on community support to help us run events, manage facilities and manage programmes across the top of the South Island, from Kaikoura through to Westport.” “Our partnership with ASB will provide valuable resources to help us continue to grow community participation and enjoyment of sport and to pursue our goal to get more people, more active, more often,” he said.

The 2013 Nelson Falcons football has been named. Head coach Davor Tavich has selected the 25-man squad to play in the 2013 ASB Youth League, which includes 21 Under 19 players, and four over age players, as allowed by New Zealand Football. The majority of the Top of the South squad are Nelson-based, however there are three Blenheim Valley club members in the mix.
