Summer sizzling
The spell of hot weather Marlborough has basked in this week is expected to continue. Temperatures through the week have hovered in the late 20s most days. On Wednesday the MetService reported Blenheim had a maximum temperature of 30C at 1pm; yesterday the temperature reached 31. Today a maximum temperature of 30C is predicted. The MetService forecasts Blenheim will reach 29C tomorrow and 27C on Sunday. Sunny weather and dry north-westerly winds are expected on Monday. A break in the weather could come on Tuesday and Wednesday with rain predicted but the sun is expected to be shining again on Thursday. Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 chief executive Paul Tredinnick said public patronage of the Blenheim pools during the hot spell had been "good and steady." As from Wednesday, a total fire ban has been enforced for the Marlborough District Council area south of the Wairau River including Rarangi. Principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara said they were monitoring things closely to decide whether to extend the ban further, especially south in the Molesworth, Hanmer areas. Dreams don’t have to come true by age 20, 30 or 40: they often occur long past when you thought possible. – Anonymous brought to you by:

By Chris Tobin Radio enthusiasts have a selection of music lined up for visitors to the annual Heritage Day at Brayshaw Heritage Park next Wednesday. Trevor Jane has hooked up a speaker system from the radio shop at the park so people will be able to enjoy nostalgia music from the likes of Glenn Miller and Vera Lynn. Mr Jane hoped people would enjoy a visit to the radio shop at the heritage park also. “It’s important that you don’t forget your history,” he said. If you want to see what a radio from the 1920s looks like and how it operates, then it would be worth dropping in to have a look. For older people it will be a trip down

memory lane while for younger generations it will be a chance to learn how their grandparents and great grandparents learned the news of the day and listened to music before the age of television, computers, cellphones and ipods. The radio shop houses collections that belonged to the two men instrumental in getting the radio shop up and running in the 1980s, the late John Finnie and Frank Stretch. “Frank Stretch was a friend; he taught me all I know,” said
Mr Jane 62, a former science teacher at Marlborough Boys’ College. Radios and crystal sets dating back to the 1920s, cathedral and tombstone radios from the 1930s, radiograms from the 1950s, Columbus radios that were assembled in Wellington and the Bell Colt, a Aucklandproduced radio that ended up in homes all over New Zealand from the 1950s to the 1970s, are all on display. An enthusiastic group of helpers, Bill Cousins, Sam
Tennant and others, have assisted Mr Jane and ensured that the radio shop remains operational. The next hope for him is that a nostalgia radio session might start, perhaps along the lines of the song request sessions of years gone by. The radio shop is open to the public on the first Sunday of each month, 1pm to 4pm. The heritage day, which has a 1940s theme, is being held next Wednesday (February 6) from 10am to 4pm.

Armed offenders police shortly after leaving the Blenheim Spa Motor Lodge in Main Street, Blenheim, on Wednesday afternoon when they apprehended a man threatening to blow himself up. Inset: An ambulance arrives to take the man to Wairau Hospital.
Bomb drama lasts over 3 hours By Chris Tobin A long stretch of Main Street, Blenheim, was shut down for over three hours on Wednesday as police negotiated with a man threatening to blow himself up. The 40-year-old man barricaded himself in a room at the Blenheim Spa Motor Lodge. He came out of the room just before 1.30pm and was apprehended by police. No explosive devices were found in the room. The man received treatment at Wairau Hospital for cuts and appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday on charges relating to incidents in Nelson. Relieving Marlborough area commander
Inspector Ross Grantham said the man had multiple cuts to his body and was naked when he came out of the motel room. Blenheim Spa Motor Lodge owner Liza Buno said after confirming to police that the man was in the room she was advised at 10.30am to evacuate. She left with two staff and waited. Guests had already checked out. “We didn’t know about this man until the police rang us,” she said. “When he checked in at seven o’clock in the morning on Monday he had a backpack.” A total of 21 police officers including the armed offenders squad and a police negotiator from Nelson were deployed.
The incident ended shortly before 1.30pm when shouts and a police dog barking were heard coming from the motel. A St John ambulance then arrived at the scene and took the man to hospital. Although within the cordoned area, the Night’n Day dairy on the corner of Stuart Street stayed open. “We’re a bit apprehensive but everyone is calm,” staff member Leaana Parnwell said as they waited for the incident to end. During the three hours lock-down, traffic had been diverted off Main St, which is part of State Highway 1, down Park Terrace. By 1.35pm traffic had resumed all along Main St.
Numbers up in schools School roll count
Cameron Alexander, Heath Murphy, Kalum Everitt-Hall, Logan Cain, Lethinel Leroy, and Jamie MacKenzie were playing cricket on Thursday afternoon as part of the Year 9 Orientation at MBC.
By Emily Elliott The starting roll is up for many schools around the Marlborough region as children go back this week and next. Marlborough Boys’ College Principal, Michael Heath, said there are around 990 students starting at the college this week, 230 of whom are new year nines. “There are certainly more year
nines this year than last year, last year we had around 210 starting. “Twenty is actually quite a big difference too,” Mr Heath said. Mr Heath believed there are going to be more year nine students coming in over the next few weeks too. According to Mr Heath, there is a carosal of activites for them this week. “We started with a Powhiri, where the Year 13 boys do a haka for the
year 9’s before they formally enter the gates.” “All the teachers then welcomed and shook hands with the boys and their parents.” Over the next week, the new college students will be learning how to use the computers and systems, as well as doing orientation activities such as tours. “The boys do team bonding in their

The college will release details of their starting roll next week.
Three schools in Marlborough will benefit from an expansion of the Government’s Social Workers in Schools (SWiS) programme,” National MP Colin King said. They are Blenheim, Picton and Mayfield schools. The Government has announced 80 schools throughout New Zealand, including those in Marlborough, would be covered by the second stage of the expansion of SWiS next term. SWiS provides accessible, professional social work services to meet the needs of children at risk of poor social, educational and health outcomes.
free entry for vets at airshow Marlborough World War Two veterans will be given free entry to this year’s Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow over Easter, March 2931. The airshow organisers have teamed up with the Marlborough Returned Services’ Association to provide transport, a hospitality tent and free admission for the airshow.
benefit fraud A Blenheim couple hid their relationship to illegally claim almost $80,000 in benefits over four years, the Blenheim District Court heard on Tuesday. Jacqui Leigh Williams, 30, and Daryll Peter McLelland, 30, a vineyard manager, admitted the charge and were sentenced to six months’ community detention and 200 hours’ community work for falsely claiming benefits worth $78,635.90. McLelland was also ordered to pay back $6500 to Work and Income New Zealand.
Great day for a beer With bright, sunny weather expected tomorrow organisers of the Blues, Brews and BBQs festival are expecting a bumper turn-out at the A&P Showgrounds in Blenheim. “This week’s been magic and what better way to finish it off with a few elegant beers and listening to some good music,” said Jim Schofield of the Blenheim Round Table, which runs the event. One highlight of the day is the fancy dress competition and Mr Schofield urged people to get their costumes on and to have a great time. Judging would be at around 4pm. The festival starts at midday and music ends at 7pm; no alcohol sales will be made after 6pm.

Wine consolidation
Consolidation in the wine-making industry is continuing with Delegat’s Group paying $8.5 million for the vineyard and winery assets of Matariki Wines and Stony Bay Wines, which are in receivership. The deal allows the listed owner of the Oyster Bay wine brand to increase its vineyard holdings in Hawke’s Bay by 61 hectares to 500 hectares.
South Island ‘bullish’ South Island businesses are increasingly bullish, outshining their northern counterparts, according to the latest Grant Thornton IBR survey. Simon Carey, a Christchurch based partner of Grant Thornton New Zealand Ltd, said that over the next year, 73.20% of South Island businesses expect an increase in revenue or turnover compared with 65.4% in the North Island.
Values decline The seasonally adjusted value of exported goods fell 3.3 percent in the December 2012 quarter, Statistics New Zealand said this week. This follows a rise of 4.4 percent in the September 2012 quarter.”Seasonally adjusted dairy exports led the fall in exports in the December 2012 quarter,” industry and labour statistics manager Louise Holmes-Oliver said. “Milk powder, butter, and cheese exports fell 12 percent, with quantities down 15 percent.”

Pak’nSave job response ‘overwhelming’ Pak’n Save Blenheim has had an outstanding reaction to its recruitment drive for the new store, with nearly 300 candidates attending group interviews out of an initial 1600 applications. Owner-operator, Andrea Boock has been delighted with the interest in positions. “We have been overwhelmed by the response from the community to our advertisements. We received a grand total of more than 1600 applicants, which is a massive response and reflects the positive feedback we’ve had in the wider community about the new store.” Since December 2012, Ms Boock and HR manager Dianne Black have had the task of reviewing the 1600 applications

Dental practice for Picton By Emily Elliott Picton patients no longer need to take an extra hour out of their day to go to the dentist. Late last year, Durrheim and Associates expanded their business to Picton, after hearing from a few people there was a demand for dental work. “As a practice we saw an opportunity - we already see a lot of Picton people in Blenheim, so now we can see Picton people in Picton,” said Jason Bradshaw, a dental surgeon at Durrheim and Associates.
“We have been seeing school children for 3-4 years so we already had the infrastructure, we just decided to extend that to private patients.” According to Dr Bradshaw, the process of planning and acquiring equipment took about six months. Every Wednesday, a dentist and a dental assistant will go to Picton to see private patients, and on Friday’s they see school children. “It now means we’re the only ones driving out there, as op-

posed to the several patients we’d see everyday driving into Blenheim,” Dr Bradshaw said. Dr Bradshaw believes the practice is unique in the fact that it is being run in conjuction with the school. “It took a bit of organization, but it’s come together quite nicely.” According to Dr Bradshaw, the Picton practice is different and enjoyable, as it is quite tight-knit. “Our practice in Blenheim is quite big and busy which is great, but then in Picton it’s just the dentist, the dental assistant, and the

patient, so it is personal and you can get to know patients quite quickly.” As the firm were setting up the new practice, new improvements were being made each time Dr Bradshaw went out there. “We’d love to get to the stage where we have a full day of patients on Wednesday’s, but we’re aware it doesn’t happen over night,” said Dr Bradshaw. The new private practice is located on the Queen Charlotte College grounds, off Hampden Street by the pool. To make an appointment or for more information, phone the Blenheim practice on 578 5843.

These will be running all week to determine how individuals perform in a variety of situations and where they will be best suited to work in the store,” says Boock. “We’ve been really impressed by the extremely high calibre of applicants and the enthusiasm they have showed to be part of the team at the new store. “The staff we will be recruiting, along with the superior management team that we have in place, ensures that we are on track for a fantastic opening, bringing New Zealand’s lowest food prices to the Blenheim community,” concludes Boock. The new store will be approximately 6000sqm and is on track to open in March 2013.
Moving to a three day mail delivery service is not sustainable or justified by current mail volumes, says the union for postal workers, the EPMU. The union is currently consulting with New Zealand Post on the company’s Network of the Future project, its response to declining mail volumes. EPMU postal industry organiser George Collins said the union recognised the commercial pressures facing NZ Post, but did not believe a three day service was justified. “The EPMU is working together with New Zealand Post to find ways to adjust to this decline while protecting postal workers’ jobs and the integrity of New Zealand’s postal service.” “This may involve a reduction in the number of delivery days or redeployment within New Zealand Post, but we would caution against any kneejerk reactions. “Declining mail volumes are a long-term issue and the response has to be sustainable for postal workers, businesses and indeed all New Zealanders.”

Top rate facilities Dear Ed, Top marks for the generous Camping ground facilities built and opened on the Eve of Christmas, at Keneperu Head. Many have made good use of toilet and shower block and generous open kitchen bench. The materials are class and a real credit to builder
Robby Blick and team. To Managers of D.O.C Picton and Havelock and whoever is responsible you have made an excellent up class facility for Kiwi and International alike. I understand there is more to be done with heaps of soil. Thank You Yours Rod Eatwell
MP’s truancy Dear Ed, If you have Sky TV and chance to watch Parliament you’ll probably get a shock at the empty seats. Where are the MPs? Are they in downtown Wellington dining at their favourite watering hole The Green Parrot? Perhaps at a massage parlour getting treatment for their overworked bodies? Or at the movies or Oriental Bay sunbathing?
Wherever they are, 90% of them aren’t in Parliament. They are extremely well paid (over $140,000 for a back bencher) plus a lot of benefits such as free air travel, allowances and a grand superannuation scheme. Truancy is rife in Parliament. What a bad example for our school children. Frank Henry
Mail service cuts Dear Ed, The Government has just confirmed it. We are becoming a banana republic with the postal service due to be cut to three days a week. Whatever happened to the notion of the public service? The post office and mail was once a public service an essential part of the
infrastructure. Oh yes, I remember Roger Douglas introduced SOEs which replaced public service with profit. And Shipley, Bolger, Clark and Key have done nothing about the erosion of the ethic of serving the public, and in fact, have booted it along. Don Coyote

Pond care by the calendar Follow this simple maintenance plan throughout the year. • Early spring: add barley straw to keep the water clear. • Early summer: tweak pond planting. • You may add more water or repot plants. • Summer: dredge for algae and blanket weed every few weeks. • If any of your pond plants are getting too vigorous, divide them now. • Autumn: You may want to net a small pond to prevent falling leaves. • Winter: In colder areas, float a ball in the water to stop ice damaging the pond lining.
January is a good time to…
Barbecue pancakes with spiced summer fruits These pancakes make a superb summer brunch. Serves 4, preparation time 10 minutes, cooking time 20 minutes. Ingredients Spiced summer fruits 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup orange juice 1 cinnamon quill 3 cups sliced fresh fruit e.g. nectarines, peaches
Pancakes 1 1/2 cups flour 1 1/4 cup milk 2 tsp baking powder 2 Tbsp caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten Yoghurt or whipped cream to serve Method Place the sugar, orange juice and spice into a saucepan for syrup. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes then remove from the heat. Preheat a BBQ grill plate and lightly brown the fruit on both sides then add the fruit to the spiced syrup. Set aside. To make the pancakes, sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl.
Stir in the caster sugar, eggs and milk to form a smooth batter. Preheat a clean BBQ hot plate. Grease with a small amount of butter then pour approximately 1/3 cup of the batter onto the hot plate.
Cook over low heat until small bubbles appear. Turn and cook the other side until it is golden brown. Top pancakes with fruit and syrup and serve with yoghurt or whipped cream.
Mulch, water and keep planting your gourmet veges and herbs. At this time of year most of your plants will need extra watering but your fruity plants – like tomatoes, strawberries and other berries – will need even more if you want them to ripen faster and become juicy. Getting your plants to stay healthy during summer can be tricky – particularly if you go on holiday. One trick to reduce the need for watering is to apply mulch around your garden. Mulch protects the soil from heat and provides a cooler soil temperature, which enables roots to pump water efficiently. If the soil is dry when you poke your finger into the ground, it needs more water. Water either early in the morning or evening when the outside temperature is cooler. This will allow the water to soak into the soil and not dry out as quickly. If you’re going on holiday you might have to rely on automatic sprinklers, but if not, it’s preferable to water by hand so you can aim at the roots. Your plants will absorb the water better this way and it encourages deeper root growth. Try not to over-water as it can rot your plants. Sometimes the wind can dry the soil on the top but if you check further down (around five to 10cm) you might find it’s not dry after all. Keep planting your fast growing gourmet veges and herbs like fancy lettuces, rocket, basil, spring onions and spinach. These plants all mature quickly and planting often will ensure you have a regular supply – just remember to keep eating it!

Did you get a puppy for Christmas? Important things to think about... Keep your puppy’s environment safe. Puppies are naturally curious. Provide a safe area for your puppy to play. A securely fenced area is essential.
Early socialisation of puppies is essential. Consider attending puppy training courses. With appropriate training and time a puppy will become a well mannered dog.
Teach your puppy basic commands. Your puppy will be able to learn most commands while they are young. Teach your puppy to sit, to come, to stay and to lie down. Basic commands is a good basis for more complicated tricks later.
Pet your puppy often. It is important to stroke your pet’s body, legs and head several times daily. This helps create a strong bond with your puppy.
AlAll puppies over 3 months old must be registered and microchipped. Neutering your puppy can help prevent the increasing number of unwanted dogs put down every year. Talk to your local vet or Animal Control.
Make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercise. Give your puppy about an hour of walk time a day broken into 2 - 4 walks. Please Note: Before your puppy interacts with other dogs. Make sure your puppy has had the required vaccinations.

Reduced postal days up for discussion Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Farmers will be consulted on the proposed changes by New Zealand Post that could reshape their delivery of mail. Gary Barnett, president of Federated Farmers Marlborough, farms at Tua Marina and currently gets mail delivered six days a week. Falling volumes of post nationwide may see mail being delivered to his gate just three days a week. Gary was not too worried about the proposed change for his situation, and said it will be a case of adjusting to it.
“We will just have to upskill the planning if we want something delivered by mail, and remember that it will take an extra day,” he said. He will be consulting with many farmers in the district to have their thoughts. Gary pays many of his bills online, and predicted more invoices will be online in the near future. He said with the postal service being a free one, there has to be tradeoffs like reduction of delivery days. “For the postal service to remain viable and remain free, that’s the decision and that’s the way it works,” he said, with regard to the review of delivery days. Communicat io n s M i n i s t e r Amy Adams said minimum service requirements for New Zealand Post are set out in the deed of understand-

ing it signed with the Crown in 1998. She said the deed has not been significantly reviewed since, and the digital revolution has brought about a need for a review. In 2012, 24 percent less mail was posted than in 2002, and within five years mail volumes are forecast further, to just over 600 million items. Rural Women New Zealand understands NZ Post’s business model needs to be reviewed, but the special role of the rural delivery service also needs to be acknowledged and preserved as far as possible. RWNZ national president Liz Evans said it actively supports and promotes rural businesses, and needs to be satisfied that the proposed NZ Post changes will not have a negative impact on rural enterprise and innovation. RWNZ is aware reduced postal services may toll heavily on the elderly rural community, non-computer literate people and those without access to internet. Public submissions will be taken over the next six weeks.
Gary Barnett, president of Federated Farmers Marlborough says coping with the proposed reduction of postal delivery days by NZ Post will be about adjustment.

Kaikoura MP Colin King has met with the Minister of Health, Tony Ryall, seeking assurances that the range of orthopaedic and general surgical services currently available at Wairau Hospital will not be cut. This move coincided with Nelson Marlborouogh District Health Board chair Jenny Black assuring Marlborough people that the health board review of the
services did not include removing them. Mr King said he was pleased and relieved to have received the same assurances from the Minister of Health. “I make the point to the NMDHB that in no way will I, or the people of Marlborough, accept a cut in the range of medical and surgical services currently available at Wairau Hospital,” Mr King said.

Handcrafted drums a gift By Emily Elliott A group of Vanuatuans was able to make a full sound after three Cajon drums were gifted to them on Wednesday. Vice President of the Marlborough Guild of Woodworkers, Vince Smith, did it as an individual project for the men. “Members of the Woodworkers Guild often make projects for people, and this was one of my efforts.”“I got the information on how to make them off the internet,” Mr Smith said. Mr Smith said the project of creating the three drums was relatively simple, it was a matter of getting things together. A Cajon drum is a box-shaped
percussion instrument the orginated from Peru, and is played by slapping the thin front face with the hands. Mr Smith said that the playing face has a snare set behind it, and depending on where the drum is touched the sound will differ. “I love their music and seeing them play the drums was marvellous,” said Mr Smith. “It has a nice mellow sound.” Mr Smith, who has been in woodwork most of his adult life and built many things, said the guild supplied some of the material, and he did the rest. “I thought it was a special moment giving [the drums] to them,” he said. Likewise, John Magekuli, one of the

men who received the drums, said it was a good thing that Mr Smith had done. “Music is a special part of my culture and where I’m from, and the boys are always excited when we get asked to play here,” Mr
Magekuli said. Mr Makeguli said that the group sometimes play at the market, and that they have just been asked to play in a music festival for a second time. Mr Makeguli was happy that
they would be able to play with the drums the next time they played. “We feel so good about those drums, as we can now fill in some space and a full sound can come out,” said Mr Magekuli.
‘Eating for Europe’ fundraiser at QCC By Emily Elliott A fundraising dinner will be held this month for students going to Europe later in the year. Since September, Queen Charlotte College Assistant principal, Jack Saxon, has been in the process of fundrasing for the school’s second Europe trip in July this year. The first, which happened in 2011 for students in certain classes, was so successful that the college has opened it up for all Year 11 and 12 students this year. “Students came back from the previous trip with a widened perspective. “They were more focused and driven, and we wanted to provide another opportunity for
this,” Mr Saxon said. Mr Saxon said although travelling gap years were great thing, students loose a year out of earning. This four week trip provides a break for the students, and when they return to school, Mr Heath siad there are positive spinoffs. “A lot of students who went on the previous trip were offered scholarships and Jack Saxon apprenticeships.” The trip starts in Venice, and the majority of time will be spent in Italy and Croatia.
From there, the group of 30 will get ‘tastes’ of many countries, by visiting cities such as Prague and Belgium. The trip costs the students $6,600 each, however Mr Heath hopes that with sufficient fundraising, the final cost will be $6000 per student. “We’re selling 200 tickets for the fundraising dinner, and although we’ve only been in sales process for nine days, we’re already halfway there.” Mr Saxon’s goal is to raise twenty-five thousand dollars or more to help to students

An auction will be held on the night, featuring an array of different items from boxes of wine to transport and accomodation deals. “It will be a great social evening, with a positive spinoff for the school,” Mr Saxon said. The tickets are selling for $55 per head, and tables of ten are for sale. Enquiries can be made through the school.

tal staff will be out and about in Marlborough talking with people and discussing what needs to be done to make sure everyone can keep watching TV. You don’t need a new TV to go digital but everyone will need a satellite dish and a satellite set-top box,” said Mr Harford. Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that every TV needs to go digital if it is to continue receiving pictures as do DVD and video recorders. Anyone with questions on the move to digital TV can visit www.goingdigital. co.nz or call 0800 838 800.

Time is fast running out for people in the South Island who are still to go digital. With less than 100 days to go, 2000 households in the Marlborough region are yet to make the move. After 28 April everyone who wants to watch TV will need to have Freeview or SKY. “I’m recommending people take action now to go digital. When Hawke’s Bay went digital last year there were people who waited until the last minute and then had to go without TV for a time because installers were fully booked,” said Greg Harford, National Manager. history or mythology. This practice had largely disappeared by the 19th century. The most common names for the kings were:
King of Spades: King David King of Hearts: Charlemagne King of Diamonds: Julius Caesar King of Clubs: Alexander the Great The king of hearts is the only one of the kings without a moustache, whereas the king of diamonds is the only king not depicted carrying a sword, wielding an axe instead. Additionally, the king of spades is the only king looking to the left.

England are ready The English cricketers are refusing to buy into talk of a Black Caps side in disarray ahead of their touropening Twenty20 series. England’s limited overs squad arrived in Auckland on Wednesday evening and are set to begin preparations with two warm-up matches in Whangarei next week. They will then play the Black Caps in three Twenty20s and three one-day internationals ahead of the Test series in March.
Vettori unlikely Daniel Vettori says his chances of playing the three-test series against England remain slim, with the return tour in May-June a more realistic goal. And New Zealand’s top strike bowler Tim Southee is an unconfirmed starter against England as he makes a measured recovery from thumb surgery.
Brad Thorn has arrived One of the Highlanders’ major off-season signings, the nomadic, World Cup-winning All Black Brad Thorn, joined his new team-mates in Central Otago last Friday and has been settling into Dunedin this week. With four children aged from 3 to 9 in the Thorn family, there has been a long list of logistics to tick off, along with Dad starting his new job and the kids starting school next week.
New swim coach Swimming New Zealand has secured the services of world-renowned coach Bill Sweetenham in a temporary role as high performance coach. Sweetenham, former Australia head coach and performance director for Great Britain, will start on February 8, following the resignation of coaches Mark Regan and Scott Talbot, who is now at the New South Wales Institute.

sports talk
Planting a cycling seed It was interesting listening to Olympic bronze medallist Simon Van Velthooven mentoring a group of young Marlborough cyclists in Blenheim last week. The matter of enjoying the sport was important, he said, but he painted a picture which showed that New Zealand’s recent cycling success on the track is the result of a lot of sweat, science, grit and sheer desire to win. Winning that bronze medal of his in the keirin event at the London Olympic Games clearly came down to amazing determination and dedication by van Velthooven.
He said that whenever he sits down to eat, he asks himself whether it would help him achieve his goals. That’s the sort of approach needed to achieve at a high level. If you’ve been around sport for awhile you can become rather blasé when another top sports star comes to town. However, I was impressed with van Velthooven. He spent an hour talking to the young cyclists and answering their questions. Then he brought out his bronze medal from London and each of the kids had the chance to hold
it in their hands, examine it and even wear it. That’s a moment those kids will remember for a long time and who knows what comes out of this. Perhaps van Velthooven has planted a seed and some new cycling star will emerge from Marlborough. Meanwhile, a report came through yesterday saying cricket legend Shane Warne thinks former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming should coach Australia. Who would have believed this once. The great Don Bradman might be spinning in his grave

over that one. Or maybe not. Sport has changed a lot in recent years. I suppose I’m out of touch but I dislike seeing what has happened in rugby for example, where ‘Deano’ Deans, a Kiwi and ex-All Black, coached the Wallabies against the All Blacks. That doesn’t seem right to me.
New challenge for Sullivan By Emily Elliott He has always wanted to do it, and next weekend the Olympian will give it all he has to make sure he finishes. Olympic gold medal rower, Joseph Sullivan, will he heading down south to compete in the Speight’s annual Coast-to-Coast event. Sullivan’s aim is not only to finish the course, but to complete it in one day, as opposed to two. “Now seems like a good time to do it, in the build up to Rio.” As well as being back in full swing training with the New Zealand Squad, Sullivan has used his afternoons off to train for the 243km rugged course.
Joseph Sullivan
The course involves cycling 140kms, which is broken into three parts, running 36kms through the Southern Alps, and kayaking
67kms through the Waimakariri Gorge, known as the Grand Canyon of New Zealand. According to Sullivan, it was difficult fitting training in, but he has been mixing and matching what he does to get in shape for the day. “I’m kayaking on my afternoons off. “[Earlier this week] I flew down and did the mountain range, and it’s a long climb and a long descent.” Sullivan believes it would have been nice to be able to train a little bit more for the course, and he has a lot of respect for the others doing it. The rower knows he is in for a challenge, as he has Nationals the
following week. “I’ll give myself some time off before Nationals, but I’ll assess how much on the day,” said Sullivan. “The training I’ve done for Coast-to-Coast will be beneficial in the long run, but it’s made me a bit slower at the moment!” When asked why he is going through with the famously rugged course, Sullivan said it was good to have a new goal and a good change. “It’s something to go for - keep things lively.” The event is being held on the 8th and 9th of February, starting at Kumara Beach and ending at Sumner Beach.
Rugby season draws near The Bayley’s Tasman Trophy rugby competition between Marlborough and Nelson Bays clubs starts on May 11. In pool A are Waitohi, Awatere and Moutere from Marlborough; and Nelson clubs Waimea, Stoke, Nelson and Riwaka.
Pool B comprises Harlequins, Central and Renwick along with Wakatu-Marist, Huia and Wanderers. In the opening round, Waitohi host Riwaka at Picton, Moutere host Stoke and Awatere also have a home game against Nelson.
In pool B, Harlequins play Wanderers at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim, Renwick are away at Trafalgar Park to Wakatu-Marist and Huia host Central at Motueka. The Marlborough premier club season starts on April 6.
