By Damian George A Marlborough grape grower is predicting a “miserable harvest season and says he faces an uncertain future in the industry. Blue Derry, who owns two grape blocks total-

ling 20 hectares in the Renwick area, says there is potentially little value in continuing if wineries continue to show such limited interest. “What’s the point in it if they’re not taking them? he says.

“They don’t want them and in a lot of cases I don’t think they can afford them. Wineries are in the same position as the growers - they’re struggling to break even. Continued Page 2.

Tough harvest predicted By Damian George From page 1. Last year, Mr Derry’s grapes sold at a price of $1200 a tonne - down more than half from the $2500 he was getting the previous year - and there is every chance prices may fall even further. “The indications are that it’s possible it may be down. You can’t survive on that. However, Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says the pinch is not just being felt by growers, and it is a matter of individual wineries and suppliers taking control to ensure the future of the industry. “We’re seeking balance - both oversupplying and undersupplying cause problems, he says. “Oversupplying comes with

more danger in that the more you supply to the market, in most cases, the lower your returns are going to be. “However, prolonged un-

dersupply could bring with it the potential of another mini planting expansion. New Zealand Winegrowers has urged growers and wineries to reduce their production for the upcoming vintage, in order to keep the problem in check. He says a nationwide crop of 265,000 tonnes could be sold profitably, with anything over that considered unsustainable. He also says it is not the quality of the grapes which is driving low prices. “Last year produced absolutely flawless vintage in terms of quality but the pricing was lower than in 2008, he says. “The prices in 2008 were at record levels, and a lot of the fruit harvested was of very poor quality.

Boy thanks paramedics By Celeste Lodewyk From page 1. Seven-year-old Harley Keen visited St John Ambulance staff on Monday to personally thank them for their efforts during an emergency call out after he was injured at his Lake Grassmere home on January 2. Blenheim paramedic Donna Abel and first aid officer Lynda Gropp rushed to meet the frantic Keen family after Harley’s arm went through a glass window resulting in a full thickness laceration.

Reported as a ‘status three’ injury, the deep laceration caused a lot of blood loss and caused damage to nerves in his hand. Harley’s mother Jodie recalled the moments of panic after the accident before praising the efforts of the paramedics. “We had not long moved from Blenheim to Lake Grassmere so the initial panic of being so far from the hospital was awful. “We are just so grateful to Donna and Lynda for meeting

us in Seddon and doing such a great job of looking after Harley. So we wish to publically acknowledge them for their fantastic and compassionate efforts, she said. After accepting a box of chocolates and thank you card from Harley, Donna commended Harley’s “brave attitude. “You were such a good patient and showed how brave you could be in a scary situation, I was very impressed, she smiled.

‘Sticky Stars’ to film in Blenheim National television station Sticky TV will be bringing their cameras to Blenheim for just the second time this Friday to film the popular Sticky Stars Karaoke competition. Unlike the show’s first visit to Blenheim - in May last year - this year’s competition will be solely for duet, rather than the usual individual, performances. Budding young vocalists will be able to stretch their lungs in front of the cameras at The Forum between 10am and midday, and 2pm and 6pm. They will sing three songs - two of which will be filmed - from a set song list, with all performances to be screened sometime throughout the year. Viewers will then be able to vote online to select the top performance from each show to progress to the second round. Contestants need to be between 10 and 16 years of age to enter.

After reading last week’s Sun edition, Budge Street residents John and Patricia Mangos spotted a photo of a 2.9m sunflower which was planted by Lesley Sheed last August. Keen to compare their own sunflowers, they measured their plants at a whopping 3.26m high. The couple planted six sunflowers from seed in their garden last October. The plants have since been pulled out and the sunflower heads are being dried for seed.

With the construction of Blenheim’s new i-SITE building gaining headway, Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston is encouraging locals to recognise the positive opportunities it will bring into the region. “The new i-SITE will improve the welcome and representation of Marlborough to the travelling public, and considering how vital tourism is to our economy, first impressions are important. “The downstream benefits of the new i-SITE will all be Marlborough’s and the positive effect that it will have on out of town visitors is important to our

economy, she says. Despite public concern over disruption to car parking, weekend markets and the future of the historic Blenheim Railway Station building, Tracy says they have some very exciting plans laid ahead. “If people can look above the short term implications of the construction process, they will see the positive opportunities that this new building will provide to the region and realise that the long term benefits far outweigh the negatives, she says. With work on the new i-SITE already underway and due for completion at the end of June

IRU 2011, Tracy says Destination Marlborough is working with Kiwi Rail to plan how the historic station can be restored and upgraded. “It’s vitally important to preserve the integrity of the existing building, this is why the new building and its proximity and design being adjacent to the historic station has been cleared with the Historic Places Trust, she says. Around 1.5 million out of town visitors come to Marlborough each year. In 2009, visitors spent a total of $208 million in Marlborough while international visitors made 370,000 day and overnight visits to the region.

Ticket sales steady for ‘Blues and Brews’ By Damian George Blues and Brews organiser Graeme Boon says the decision to allow glass at next month’s festival should contribute to another large turnout. Mr Boon says ticket sales have been steady if unspectacular so far, but the inclusion of glass is a positive move which will help to attract crowds. “In the past we’ve had a sector of the public more receptive to drinking out of glass rather than polycarbonate, he says. “It’s certainly not going to deter people anyway. Glass was banned from the event last year - despite being allowed at the Marlborough Food and Wine Festival - but was granted a special licence for this year’s event. Mr Boon says it will be difficult to tell whether crowd numbers

Theatre: what the councillors say Blenheim’s new theatre is a hot topic in the town at the moment.

The Marlborough District Council is proposing to build a new theatre next to the Clubs of Marlborough, and convert the old theatre into a library. Part of the funding for the $17 million project will come from the Civic Theatre Trust and the MDC, while the source of the remaining funds are still to be discussed. We decided to get the councillors’ thoughts on the project.

Note: Councillors Graeme Barsanti, Trevor Hook, Terry Sloan, Jenny Andrews, Peter Jerram and Graeme Taylor did not wish to comment. Councillor John Leggett did not wish to formally comment, but says the council has an obligation to look long-term and at the future of the community. “There’s other factors than just economic - there’s social and cultural responsibilities as well, so it’s not just about the money, he says. Councillors Francis Maher and Jamie Arbuckle were not available for comment.

On the cost/funding of the theatre:

important consideration is to keep rates affordable for ratepayers.

David Oddie: Being elected as a Marlborough Sounds ward councillor, and with this ward’s major population base being Picton, I have to question the timing and financing of this project. Picton is looking for $2 million from council to complete the Endeavour Park Community Centre - this will come as a loan from MDC for which Picton will be target rated to repay. Picton requires $5 millon for a new sewerage outfall, for which we will be target rated to repay. Picton’s water supply at the current rate of development will run out in 2012 [we will get another six years from our current supply if we meter]. Cost of a new town water supply is estimated at $17 million, for which we will be target rated to repay. For council to gift $5 million to the theatre trust, and offer to buy their existing building for a further $6 million dollars - all with a suggested zero rates impact - just does not rest easily with me.

Jessica Bagge: I understand the $5 million MDC has earmarked for the theatre has been approved by the previous Council. The new council, however, has an opportunity to look into purchasing the old theatre building and the options for our community that come out of that. I am very interested in the views of ratepayers as to whether they are prepared to invest in that commercial site and the future uses of its land and building.

David Dew: The previous council made a commitment to the theatre, as I understand it, of $5 million plus $200,000 a year towards running costs, and I am happy for that to be honoured. The information then and now is that the existing theatre doesn’t comply with the current building code and OSH requirements and, if upgraded, would cost a significant sum and yet would still be a dog. Most of that current commitment won’t affect rates and we can still have a nil rate increase this year if enough councillors support me on that. Geoff Evans: Marlborough’s economy is struggling. At present, the most

On the site of the theatre: David Oddie: I feel the current selected site is satisfactory given the new adjacent parking building. David Dew: The proposed site is an excellent one and I can’t see a better one. It compliments the parking building really well there and overlooks the river. Geoff Evans: As a new councillor, I have not made any study of site options. That decision was made by the previous council. However, this does seem to be a good site with many options and advantages such as Clubs of Marlborough, parking availability and the proximity to the river. Jessica Bagge: My biggest reservation about the site next to the Convention Centre is that there is no internal link between that and the new theatre. I understand that they complement each other and it could be useful to have two 700-seat complexes next door to one another for future events; the existing theatre site has worked well, I wonder how much time, money and energy has gone into

exploring a complete refit/rebuild of the existing site. You could do a lot with the Trust’s money on that piece of land.

On the benefit of a new theatre to Blenheim: David Oddie: As a Marlborough District councillor, I support the council’s involvement in the social development of our community through social infrastucture, and I see the theatre as fitting this model. David Dew: The existing theatre is, and was, a compromise from what was planned many years ago, and ended up that way because of a lack of vision by some at the time (not the theatre people, but some councillors). There is an old saying “do it once and do it right - this is a chance to do it right so it will last for many decades. The theatre is used a lot more now than many people realise and a decent theatre is essential to a “balanced community. It can also be used in conjunction with the conference centre. Geoff Evans: Obviously, a new theatre is a desirable asset for Marlborough but only if it is affordable. A robust cost/benefit analysis would answer this question. The last council has made the decision to partially fund the theatre project. Jessica Bagge: I believe that the existing theatre complex is past its best by date. They do need to do something - no doubt about that. It’s a big investment from the ratepayers though and I’d like to know that we have exhausted all the avenues available in today’s climate. We do need a new theatre - it’s part of future-proofing Marlborough.

Trust awaits decision Construction of Blenheim’s proposed new theatre will not get underway until at least the end of the year, Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley says. Mr Moseley says the

trust is awaiting the results of geotechnical testing to establish what foundations the building will require before the design process begins. He says the trust’s intention

is to advertise for tenders later in the year, subject to finances being in place. The trust is also waiting on the council’s decision as to whether or not it will purchase the current theatre.

Celebrity fisher pulls crowds

Celebrity fisherman Matt Watson will be at Fairweathers in Blenheim next month.

By Damian George Adventure fishing celebrity Matt Watson will be entertaining locals at Blenheim’s Fairweathers bar next month, and his appearance is shaping to attract a sellout crowd. The New Zealand stunt fisherman and host of The Ultimate Fishing Show rose to fame after posting a video on YouTube where he caught a black marlin game fish by diving on it from a helicopter. His show was subsequently picked up by television channels Discovery and Animal Planet and broadcast in the US, and led to his appearance on America’s The Late

Show hosted by David Letterman. Marlborough Hunting and Fishing manager Don Hansen, who has organised the evening, says demand for the 150 tickets to see the star on February 2 has been immense. “It’s practically a sellout. There’s only ten or so tickets left. The show also features fishing expert Justin Corric, and the two will offer varied information and advice for punters to take away. “Justin will be talking about how people can improve their fishing and offer methods to learn about mechanical and jig fishing, he says.

“Matt’s going to be discussing parts of his show, what’s coming up, where he’s filmed and other experiences he’s had, and will back it up with footage from the show as well. “So the two talks will be quite different. Don says there should be about an hour between Justin’s talk at 6pm and Matt’s appearance at 8pm, to allow people to talk to Justin and ask him questions. All crowd members will go in the draw to win a $1000 speed and jig fishing item from Shimano, while $1000 worth of hardware products from ITM are also up for grabs.

By Damian George People from all over New Zealand will be converging on Blenheim and the Waihopai spy base in an anti-war protest this weekend. Anti-Bases Campaign spokesperson Murray Horton says protestors will be carrying crosses, coffins and white masks to symbolise New Zealand’s contribution to “the American war machine through the spy base. “The Wikileaks NZ cables reveal the central role that this spy base plays in the secret intelligence relationship between New Zealand and the US, proving what the Anti-Bases Campaign has been saying all along - full US/NZ intelligence ties were secretly restored in 2009. He says Waihopai is an important source of intelligence for the Pentagon, meaning New Zealanders too “have blood on our hands. The demonstration, which will take place from January 21-23, will be the first protest at the site since the March 2010 acquittal of the three peace activists who damaged the base in 2008. The protestors will march from Seymour Square through central Blenheim at 11am on Saturday, before meeting at the spy base at 2pm to stage a “peaceful protest calling for its closure.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What are your thoughts on the Queensland floods?

Devastating, poor people, I can only try to imagine how awful it would be for them.

Have spoken to friends and family, living by the Brisbane River, who are ok. I feel very sorry for the people that are not ok.

Huge sympathy for the people affected and appreciation for the help given by the Armed Forces and Red Cross.

My daughter is over in Brisbane. Its devastating for the people that have lost everything.

There is always somewhere in the world these terrible things happen. Brisbane will get the help, but Haiti’s not going to.

Been following it in the Media. Can’t imagine what it would be like, especially in Toowoomba.

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to

abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Blue cod opening What a shocking state of affairs over the blue cod reopening with a number of stupid rules Marlborough fishers have to comply with. Minister of Fisheries Heatley has introduced very silly regulations which will have no beneficial effect. They will only unfairly penalise recreational fishers and Marlborough in particular. Things like a two cod and hook limit, the slot fishery and other stupidity - will Heatley make commercial and customary abide them? Or Wellington boats coming across? Or Nelson boats? Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley’s press conference in Blenheim which I attended was just bureaucratic bull dung. Heatley quoted ministry figures of 250 tonne annual recreation catch which is grossly inaccurate.

It would take over 350 recreational boats out every day 365 days per year to give 250 tonnes. The Sounds were not depleted as ministry and some fools in Nelson, say. The NIWA 2008 survey showed increases in cod in outer zones and no changes (decreases) inside the Sounds. Massey scientist Dr Ian Henderson says in 2007 the 3 cod and 30 cm limit was about right. The manipulating public servants have “conned the minister. “Yes minister! I thought Phil Heatley was intelligent. Perhaps I was wrong. Where does local MP Mr King stand on this and the set net ban? Remember, it is an election year. Regards, Des Mitchell

Phobias In response to “Proud Homophobic on Jan 5: I have to challenge your concept of feeling proud and clean-living. Homophobia is just like racism - it is destructive, a way to try and dehumanize a group of people who are “different from the “norm, whatever that is perceived to be. Homophobia, not homosexuality, is what needs to be cured. What harm is there in two people of the same sex loving each other? What is harmful are views of intolerance or hatred directed towards a minority group of good people who just want to live their life. Proud Homophobic, you may be keen to look at the current research as to why you are a homophobe. You may be very surprised. Regards Ann Arnold

Stunning figures I am stunned at the figure of $200,000 to $400,000 for ongoing operating costs for the new theatre. Who else gets that from ratepayers? Farmers, fisherman, taxi operators? The Clubs of Marlborough site is not a good place to put it and, regardless of that, to expect ratepayers to fund the running costs is downright wrong. Yours faithfully, Clarkie

Theatre on show In response to the front page of the Sun 12 Jan re - the theatre. It is high time that we know who in the hierarchy is railroading us into this situation to build a theatre on an unacceptable triangle site, that is far too small and no room for future expansion. It is obvious to me and many others that they are building a monument to themselves at our expense. With the discussions I have had I hear that there are within the council a few that are steam rolling others over this. At the figures produced the existing theatre has cost the rate payer

around $500 000 per year since it opened. I am not against a theatre but am strongly against the site that is proposed. When I came to Blenheim in 1973 the population of the borough was 17500, now it is approx 22500, (not a great population expansion in 38 years) and the locals were hell bent chastising and not accepting people from other districts. It is hard to hear you are not a local. Is this not New Zealand? Get this theatre situation out into the public arena before it is to late. Anti secrets

Hands-on learning Just imagine, learning about the Agriculture industry in a hands-on practical way. This is the exciting opportunity being offered to the young people of Marlborough, a cadet training programme run by Onsite Education in Blenheim. The National Certificate in Agriculture Level 2 is run in a very unique way, and is available to men and women aged 16years and above. Practical tutor Brett Billingsley takes students out to Marlborough farms where they spend four days a week

gaining skills and knowledge in fencing, stock handling, use of farm machinery and vehicles. The fifth day is then spent working on theory at the Onsite Education classroom situated at Lansdowne Park. Onsite Education operations manager Sharon Blount praises the programme’s ability to provide nationally recognised training opportunities for school leavers. “Students sometimes choose to pull out of school early or within weeks of the first term, so we have a continual enrolment

to offer training opportunities right throughout the year, she says. “We offer a very structured learning system built on a Unit Standard base. Cadets not only work towards nationally recognised qualifications, but we also bring them to the point of being employable, she says. There are places currently available in the programme and for a short time, Onsite Education is offering ZERO fees. For more information text or call Brett on 027 568 8255 or email aginfo@ilp.co.nz.

Happy children, healthy children Blenheim early childhood Centres Te Kupenga Preschool children are always very busy learning and developing new skills, thoughts and ideas. A continuing focus for the children is the importance of staying healthy and fit. With the warmer weather recent weeks has seen the children planting and tending to

their edible fruit and vege gardens where they are enhancing their knowledge on the values of healthy food choices. Also as seen in the photos part of the children’s daily programme consists of physical activities such as sports, games ball skills and music and dance. It’s an enjoyable part of the

daily programme fostering and nurturing the children’s ongoing interests, for teachers and children alike as we are privileged to have an extensive sports field as part of our safe

Preschool learning e one of the many benefits of having a rural centre only 7 minutes from town.

HEALTHY EATING TIP FOR CHILDREN: Part of teaching young children to like healthy food is having it available to them on a regular basis. Removing unhealthy items like cookies, lollies and chips leaves young ones no choice but to develop a taste for healthier foods and takes away the temptation of junk food.

Renwick Preschool management and staff invites you to come and have a look around our Centres. The teaching team is dedicated to ensuring children “experience the world around them. To achieve this, regular trips, walking excursions and activities outside of the centre are part of the normal programme at Renwick Preschool. The benefit to children is to extend their experiences. Fun shows, visit places they may not otherwise visit such as SPCA, farms, museums, parks and other areas of interest around the district which is critical to language development. All the teaching staff use their skills, to run effective programmes, being flexible and responsive to combine and best offer fun exciting learning for infants and children. Rest assured that if your child attends Renwick Preschool he/she will be out experiencing all the wonderful learning opportunity’s the Marlborough District has to offer. A walk to the shop to take in some fresh air, watch the log truck go past and pick up milk for afternoon tea. The 2011 trips and excursions planner is already underway and shaping up to be another busy year out and about in the community. Renwick Preschool is open 7.30am to 5.00pm -5.30 by arrangement. The team welcomes the opportunity to meet you and will happily guide you through your child’s early learning phases and care. Phone 572 9868 or email us at Renwick_ Preschool@xtra.co.nz

O A K B T O A C K B C T Money and sanity saving tips... Get a stationery list ahead of time Once school starts stationery shops are bedlam, so why not beat the rush and get your stationery list ahead of time. Most schools know well in advance what stationery your child will need, so try and get a list at the end of each school year. If there isn’t one available, phone the school office a week or two before school starts and ask for one to be sent out. Also check your school website, as many schools post their lists online.

Double check which subjects your child is taking Before you go running off to the stationery store, double check which subjects your child is actually taking. Chances are their stationery

list will cover every subject for their year, and they won’t need it all. Get them to go through the list with you, and highlight the items they need.

Check their bag! Just because it’s on their list, doesn’t mean they actually need it. Tip their school bag out, and see what items have survived. Children love to get new stuff every year, but things like ring binders, dividers and art folders can often be re-used.

What is needed when? Ask your child’s teacher what items are needed straight away. You may find that a subject doesn’t start until Term 2, or that a specific project book isn’t required until later in the year. It may not necessarily save you money, but it will spread out the cost over several months.

These days is optional, a lot of ladies love men who have a five oclock shadow, but if your facial hair is unkempt you would be better to take the razor to it and be clean shaven for your night out.

Anti-aging creams work just as well on men as they do on women but they can leave your face with an un-masculine shine. If you use these creams you should also purchase a couple of cosmetics to take the shine from your face.

Skin Cleansing: Cleaning your face with an apricot scrub gets rid of dead skin particles and leaves your facial skin feeling smoother and looking great it can also help prevent black heads and white heads.

Teeth Whitening:

-AXWELL 2D 0H

No matter how often you clean your teeth the can become stained from drinking tea, coffee, smoking and from eating different foods. There are many different ways to whiten your teeth but the cheapest option is to use

whitening toothpaste. This may take a little longer than other methods to work but they will give you a brighter smile in a matter of weeks.

Fresh Breath: Having whiter teeth doesn’t always mean that you have fresh breath and although regular brushing does help investing in a good mouth wash is essential. Mouthwash gets to parts of the mouth that brushing can’t reach leaving your breath fresher and your mouth cleaner.

Hair Care: Regardless of your hair type, it is important to use a shampoo that is gentle on your hair. Ingredients such as vitamin E are great for naturally strengthening and conditioning the hair follicles. Be sure to read the labels, as some products can contain artificial ingredients that don’t do much for your hair. Hot oil treatments also leave your hair with a great natural looking shine.

Have Fun! You look good, you feel good and you are oozing confidence. All that is left is to enjoy your fresh new look.

Police concerned with car break-ins Police are again urging people not to leave valuable items in their cars after a spate of break-ins over the last few days. The first occurred on Thursday when two boys, aged 13 and 14, broke into a car in Springlands and were caught with stolen property from another break-in. Then, over the weekend, another three vehicles were raided, with $3000 worth of diving gear stolen from one and a head unit and speakers taken from another. Police say people should not leave their vehicles parked on the street, and items such as cellphones, wallets and iPods are common targets for thieves.

Tuesday, January 11 At 7.35am, a 22-year-old male miner was arrested after breaching his community work duties. At 1.10pm, a 46-year-old unemployed woman was arrested for

assaulting police and resisting arrest after an incident at a house on Wairau Road in Picton. At 9.40pm, a 21-year-old male forestry worker was arrested for receiving a stolen Samsung 32 LED TV, taken from the Cloudy Bay Business Park on October 30.

Wednesday, January 12 At 1pm, a 33-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Boyce Street, Blenheim. At 9.45pm, a 43-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Thursday, January 13 At 1.40am, a 22-year-old woman tested positive for drink driving.

Her breath alcohol reading was 481 mcg. At 12:20pm, a 28-year-old male driver was arrested for driving while disqualified. At 10.20pm, a 17-year-old female vineyard worker and an 18-year-old unemployed man were arrested for possession of cannabis.

Friday, January 14 At 12:30am an 18 yr old male unemployed was arrested for breach of court bail.

Saturday, January 15 A 32-year-old unemployed man was arrested following a shoplifting spree in which he stole items from The Warehouse, Postie Plus, Savemart and Farmers.

Two unemployed men, aged 18 and 33, and a 19-year-old male freezing worker, were arrested for breaching their bail conditions. A 20-year-old unemployed man and a 19-year-old male bricklayer were arrested for disorderly behaviour. A 42-year-old woman was arrested on two warrants for her arrest.

Sunday, January 16 A 17-year-old man was arrested for breaching the liquor ban. A 42-year-old unemployed man was arrested for cultivating cannabis after police went to his house on an unrelated matter. A 53-year-old male beneficiary was arrested for dangerous driving, failing to stop on police request and refusing a blood test. A 26-year-old male labourer was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Information wanted about stolen car Police want to hear from anyone who may have information about the whereabouts of a vehicle which was stolen early Thursday morning. Police say the blue 1994 Subaru Legacy, registration ALH664, was stolen from outside a Clearwater Place address about 1.40am. Shortly after the theft, a member of the public reported a tall, skinny man trying to break into another vehicle on Ward Street, and it is thought he may be connected to the theft.

Young farmers prepare for battle Young farmers will be aiming to impress in the Marlborough District young farmer of the year competition on Saturday. Competitors will face a range of theoretical and practical challenges, with the winner securing a place in the Tasman Regional finals which comprises Christchurch, Greymouth, West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough. Event organiser Susan Munro says the competition provides a chance for young farmers to gain some valuable experience. “The emphasis is on participation and skill development without the pressure that exists at regional and grand final level. There are 22 district or zone competitions held throughout New Zealand each year to determine who will go on to regional finals Oliver and Susan Munro, convenors for the Young and, ultimately, the grand final in Masterton Farmers Marlborough District Final, getting some from June 29 to July 2. sheep ready for a stock module on Saturday.

Bovine TB research steps up over summer months Researchers will shortly begin a three year project in the Clarence Reserve and Muzzle Station as part of ongoing work to assist with the Animal Health Boards goal of reducing the amount of bovine TB in livestock and wildlife in New Zealand. As part of a broad programme of research aimed at reducing reliance on 1080, Landcare Research staff will undertake a large-scale field

experiment to compare the cost-effectiveness and speed of TB reduction in possums

using either poisoning or vaccination alone, or both in combination. The research aims to provide the first large-scale operational field test of the efficacy of vaccination as a way of breaking the TB cycle in possums. If shown to be feasible and affordable, this will provide the Animal Health Board with an important back-up tool for eradicating TB.

NO SUN HERE: Siblings Sumaya Mir (14-years) and Hashim Mir (11-years) keep dry and undercover as Blenheim receives a lashing of wet weather.

Sunshine title down the drain Blenheim has some catch-up to do now that the ‘Sunniest Centre for 2010’ has once again eluded the Marlborough region. Whakatane beat Blenheim and long-time rival Nelson in sunshine hours released last week in the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) official climate summary for 2010. The numbers are Whakatane 2561, Nelson 2474 and Blenheim 2415. Marlborough, (Blenheim in particular) has long boasted of its reputation as a sunny region. But the hope of dominating the top of the sunshine table has slowly faded away with only two titles in the past decade. According to NIWA statistics, Blenheim held the sunniest centre title in 2007 and 2008, while Nelson reigned from 2000 – 2006 and 2009. On more of a wet note, Blenheim residents are advised to brace themselves as heavy rain and gale force winds moved into the region last night. The two tail ends of tropical cyclones Zelia and Vania have been predicted to brush over parts of the country this week.

Success at last: Lucie Boshier and driver Robert Butt [outside] on their way to winning the Win McPadden and Rod O’Connor Pace event at Westport Racecourse on Boxing Day.

By Damian George Blenheim racehorse co-owner Greg Ruffell hopes his new champion has turned the corner after winning her first race at Westport Racecourse on Boxing Day. Lucie Boshier, who is owned by a group of nine men from Blenheim and one from Ashburton, overcame her notorious race day stage fright to take out the Win McPadden and Rod O’Connor Pace event by “about a length. “She’s always shown a lot of

ability but she’s been a wee bit funny at races, he says. “She used to get a wee bit nervous. This time, she just relaxed a bit more and won quite easily in the end. After winning all her workout and trial races and gaining three fourth placings over the last year, the Boxing Day victory could be the breakthrough the men were hoping for. “We want to win a few more races now. She’s just having a wee spell at the moment but after that we want to get her into the

Phillies races which are worth a wee bit more, Mr Ruffell says. Lucie, who beat a field of 14 in the 2000 metre race, is trained in Rangiora by Andrew Stuart. Mr Ruffell says a group of 30 made the trip from Blenheim to Westport to cheer the horse on, and took numerous opportunities to toast her success on the way back. “All the owners and friends and family did a pub crawl on the way back. It took us four hours to get there, and about eight to get home.

Anna sets sights on USA By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim teenager Anna Tempero has begun packing her bags in preparation for her biggest gymnastics achievement to date, representing New Zealand in America. Anna, 16-years was informed just days before Christmas that she was one of 16 top gymnasts chosen from around NZ to compete at the 2011 IGI Chicago Style Gymnastics Meet on February 11, 12 and 13. Beaming from ear to ear, Anna says the honour of being selected has created quite a buzz amongst her family and friends. “This is my first NZ representation and I am rapt, she grins. “All my family and friends have been hugely supportive and are just as excited as I am, I can’t wait. Anna has been participating in gymnastics for nearly 11-years and says it was always her long term goal to compete overseas. “When the opportunity came up to apply for the 2011 event I jumped at the chance, she says. To be selected, Anna first submitted an application before being judged at the New Zealand National GymSports Champion-

ships in September last year. There she competed as a level seven gymnast and won gold, her first ever gold medal at a national level. Now only weeks away from the Chicago competition, Anna and her family are fundraising to cover the $5000 cost for the week long trip. Currently there has been $2000 put towards the trip from a variety of sponsors, but in an effort to raise the remaining $3000 there is a Holiday Programme Fundraiser being held called, “Give It a Go Gymnastics. The programme runs from January 18 to the 26th with two sessions per day. For more information about these fun gymnastics sessions contact Sarah Tempero on (03) 520 9262 or (03) 578 1186 or Anna Molloy on 027 645 1191.
