Kath hangs up basket By Celeste Lodewyk Thirty-years of delivering Meals on Wheels has left Blenheim woman Kath Smale with many fond memories and friendships. Kath decided to hang up her keys, a decision she says she made “reluctantly. “I wasn’t looking forward to the day I finished as I knew I would miss the contact with those I visited on a monthly basis, she smiles. Since finishing with delivering, Kath has taken the role as Meals on Wheels convenor for the New Zealand Red Cross Blenheim Service Centre. Looking back over her 30-year long volunteer service to Meals on Wheels, Kath says it has been a privilege to serve the community. “It was humbling to be able to help so many people in the community and I am very thankful to

my good health that I have been able to deliver meals for all this time. “People were always appreciative and enjoyed the meals so it has been a pleasure to be part of the Meals on Wheels team, she says. With a little extra spare time on her hands, Kath says she has plenty to do with regular visits from her great grandchildren. NZ Red Cross, Blenheim is seeking trustworthy people in the community to join their friendly team of Meals on Wheels drivers. If you have two hours a month to spare and your own car, contact Gayle at the Blenheim service centre. not consider herslef exclusively a country artist. “I grew up listening to lots of country music so it was a bit hard not to be soaking that up. “But what I write is not strictly country; it’s more alternative country, or Americana, aswell as some folk rock and bluegrass, she says. Donna is responsible for the title track on highly-acclaimed bluegrass singer Rhonda Vincent’s 2009 album Destination Life. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award in January. She says her lyrics are drawn from real-life experiences - both personal, and events happening around her.

“People come up after a gig and tell me I’m singing about their lives. “That’s when I feel most at home and connected in the world, when my life story and theirs merge in the brief moments of a song. Donna will be playing at Chequers Bar at 9.15pm Friday, January 7.

FLOOD DAMAGE: Top: Logs that came down south of Havelock in last week’s storm. Bottom: Flood waters wreaked havoc on this bridge just south of Canvastown.

%ODFN +HDUW 5XP

Flood clean-up begins By Damian George The Marlborough District Council is advising people to avoid swimming in rivers and coastal areas because of a risk of rain washing contaminants into the water. Environmental science and monitoring manager Alan Johnson says human and animal faecal bacteria can enter waterways through urban and rural stormwater runoff, and people should not swim in any discoloured water for at least three days after rainfall. “The risk of catching a disease from swimming in clear, clean water is usually low, he says. “However, when contamination levels are high following heavy rainfall events, there is an increased chance that you may catch a stomach, ear, skin or

respiratory infection. Results from routine water samples taken last week showed “unacceptable numbers of bacteria in many waterways, particularly in Port Underwood, Hakahaka and Oyster Bay. Mr Johnson said last week it would take several days for the next monitoring samples to be assessed, and people should not swim at those sites until the results are available. For further information on bathing water quality, go to www.marlborough.govt.nz/ recreation. Meanwhile, Marlborough District Council Assets & Services Manager Mark Wheeler is asking anyone affected by the floods who have not been contacted to advise the council.

Blenheim couple Katrina Curtis and Stephen Gill gave birth to Marlborough’s first baby of the new year at Wairau Hospital on New Year’s Day. Olivia Grace CurtisGill, who weighed 8lbs, was due on Christmas Eve but arrived a week later to give the couple a perfect start to 2011. “She just kind of hung in there to feel important, Katrina jokes. “It’s really exciting. It’s our first baby as well. Katrina says the pair are rapt, and are getting used to becoming parents.

“We’ve been trying to contact and find everyone affected and I believe we have, he says. “But if there is anyone having trouble, let us know. He says there are a number of volunteers working in Canvastown, which was the worst hit area. All roads were reopened on New Year’s Eve, with only a handful being reduced to one lane, although all lanes should be open reasonably soon, he says. Canvastown remains a 50 kilometre zone at this stage. Mr Wheeler says the main concern now is getting all the roads back up to scratch. “It will take a few months for the surfaces to be reinstated to the standard they were before the floods, he says.

By Celeste Lodewyk. The light misting blanket of a December sun shower could not hamper the spirits of Bailey, Rye and Rex – Marlborough SPCA’s pet therapy dogs. This time last year the Sun profiled Leigh Rector and Karen McDonald, volunteers for the programme who were highlighting the growing demand for pet therapy within Marlborough. At the time, Karen and her Bichon Cross named Rye were new to the programme. Now one year on, the programme’s success is once again presenting the opportunity for more volunteers.

Pat Tapp is the programmes newest volunteer and working with her Border Collie, Rex, she says it has been one of the most rewarding roles to have. “The most memorable moment for me was when we met an elderly gentleman at Aberleigh Rest Home who experienced trouble sitting up and speaking. “Rex went straight to him, rested his head on the resident’s lap and nuzzled his hand. “That was when the resident said clearly; this goes to a man’s heart, with tears in his eyes. You could see how much he loved Rex’s visit, Pat smiles. Animals have a proven history with positive therapy from the disabled and

elderly, through to those living alone. Bailey, Rye and Rex spend many hours comforting and raising the spirits of people within the community, including youth considered ‘at risk’. Due to the growing demand, Leigh is appealing for more volunteers who can some time and their beloved pets to contact Marlborough SPCA and join the programme. “Pets can include cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and lambs, all with sociable natures which can be temperament tested for interaction with children and adults, Leigh says.

By Damian George Former More FM radio host Nigel Steele says he is looking forward to trying to break into the broadcasting industry in Britain. Nige and co-host Jamie Liddicoat broadcast their last show together to Blenheim listeners on Christmas Eve, after seven years behind the microphone. Steele leaves for Britain on January 18 with British wife Sam Tomlan, who he met while living there several years ago. “I really want to stay working in radio. Whether or not I’ll get an on-air job like the one I’ve got here I’m not sure, but I am looking to crack the radio industry over there, he says. “I’m obviously really excited about our move and the future but it is sad to be leaving. He says the driving force behind the move was the plan to start a family with Sam. “We’ve had seven years living on this side of the world and home sickness hasn’t been easy for her. “We’d like to start a family and we’d like to be close to her family to do that. He says it was emotional to say goodbye to his best friend Jamie and

to all his fans and listeners. “We’ve made a lot of memories and had a lot of fun and it’s been a great ride.

Viv “blown away by NZ honour Annie’s Cafe brand manager Blair Kibblewhite wants to give more options to gluten-free shoppers.

Gluten-free eaters get lesson in creativity Damian George After becoming gluten intolerant in 2005, Annie’s Cafe brand manager Blair Kibblewhite says his supermarket shopping became rather monotonous. With a limited range of gluten-free products to choose from, Blair decided he could use his knowledge of food to educate other people in his position that there is “more than one way to skin a cat. “When I go to the supermarket, I know exactly where I’m going and what I’m going to buy, he says. “So I wondered how many other people were in the same rut as me where they don’t look further afield. The result was a 40-minute presentation held last month, organised with the support of Blenheim New World, Aria Farm and QF Treets, designed to give people more options when it came to cooking with gluten-free products.

“It was really just to enlighten people, he says. “Especially in a small town like Blenheim, people don’t get privy to exposure of advertising or a lot of new products. I’m just trying to bring that into this talk. Blair shared recipes he has tried substituting gluten-free products, aswell as providing free samples supplied by the supporting stores. Over 20 people turned up for the presentation, from gluten-intolerant to celiacs and partners of gluten-intolerant people. “What came out of it is they said they’ve got ideas, he says. “And gluten-free products are not the cheapest so people may not have tasted some of these foods before. Blair says cooking gluten-free food is a matter of trial and error and persevering until the right mix is found.

&OR ALL YOUR CLEANING NEEDS

Continued from Page 1.“ I actually couldn’t finish reading it at first, she says. “It was a real shock. I’ve always liked John Key, now I’ve got a letter from him to put in my scrapbook. Mrs Broughton has been recognised numerous times already for her contrubution to the community, notably through the Paul Harris Fellowship Award and the Charity Limelight Award. The scrapbooks she refers to are full of photos, letters, awards, and newspaper clippings documenting a lifetime of community work. “It’s rewarding. I’ve made some wonderful friendships and I’ve learned a lot. Among her highlights is hosting the Silver Ferns netball team when they came to Blenheim for a training camp in 2004. “To meet Ruth Aitken [Silver Ferns coach] was a real highlight because I think Ruth’s a fantastic person. The 62-year-old has only just stopped playing netball herself after 25 years at the St Mary’s Old Gilrs Club, where she is a life member, and holds a service award from Marlborough Netball. She has also just given up holding fitness classes after six years for women over 50, where she raised $18,000 for various charities

through leftovers of $3 membership fees. Mrs Broughton is a volunteer committee member and executive manager at Alzheimer’s Society Marlborough, president of Wairau Garden Club, and has served nearly a decade on the Vintage Car Club committee and seven years on the Brayshaw Heritage Park commitee. She also founded a committee called ‘Operation Undercover’ set up in 1986 to raise funds for the construction of Blenheim’s indoor pool, where they raised $135,000 in three months. Mrs Broughton says her involvement with the Blenheim community was brought on by an incident several years ago. “My son lost his leg at 16 and the community were just absolutely fantastic, she says. “We found it very difficult at the time but we were just amazed by the support we got - people were helping and they’d come round with biscuits, cakes and food. “It made us sit back and think ‘this is an amazing place’. “I thought I had to give something back to the community because they’ve been so good to us for a very long time. As a member of the Marlborough Historical Society, she says her next goal is to see the proposed redevelopment of the Brayshaw Heritage Park go ahead.

Trout Hotel owners Raymond and Karen Cresswell initially feared they would be out of business for months following the floods which forced the hotel’s closure last week. But, thanks to a huge cleanup effort, the hotel was due to be back in business as early as this morning, just over a week after the incident. The hotel in Canvastown closed last Tuesday after the Wakamarina River burst its banks

and caused a flood which locals say is the worst they have seen. Family, staff and cleaners have been scrubbing the building to get it back up to scratch, while people outside the hotel have used high-pressure hoses to remove dirt and mud left after the water receded. Mrs Kresswell says there will probably be no carpet for about a month but, other than that, the bar will be operating as normal.

Vicki Boyce Blenheim

Jalani Wright Blenheim

Courtney Funnell Blenheim

Bev Adams Blenheim

Beth Funnell Blenheim

I got an awesome Granddaughter.

The earthquake has to be the biggest event, and I’m glad no-one was hurt.

My biggest achievement was that I did Spirit Adventure.

Christchurch earthquake and the mines.

Mine Disaster, I think that is just tragic.

Angela Henry-Gifford Blenheim Went to Kona in Hawaii to watch my brother-in-law do iron man. Awesome achievement and the whole family went.

Blue Cod Slack NZ Post Tactics Dear Ed Did it occur to anyone the announcement of reopening the blue cod fishery plus its stupid rules, was timed for just before Christmas? In that way the holiday break smothers angry reaction. It’s an old tactic by the bureaucratic half wits. Because they are halfwitted, they think we are too. By crikey, myself and my mates aren’t. It’s an issue for election time later. WN

Dear Ed, I can match Shelby Wright’s story of postal nondelivery. In October I posted in Blenheim a cheque to a business firm at a specific address in Rapaura Rd, Blenheim. Although every postal worker in Blenheim knows where Rapaura Rd is, the mail was returned to me 24 days later, undelivered due to “insufficient address because I had not put RD3 on the envelope. I put this sort of thing down to sheer bloody-mindedness. More recently a package intended for someone unknown to me but bearing my address arrived in my mailbox. I wrote on it in block letters that the person was unknown at my address, and reposted it. Two days later in was delivered to my mailbox again. I don’t wish NZ Post a happy Christmas. I wish them a tiny grain of common sense and initiative, although as a former employee of the UK Post Office, I am aware that these qualities are not encouraged. Regards Ian Hood

Dear Ed, I’m a proud clean living homophobic and was extremely disappointed that not one decent Blenheim resident wrote to you about those two homosexuals who were distressed, insulted, disgusted and very upset on December 15. about a very clever truthful T-shirt slogan. I wonder why this left wing few don’t get all twisted and bent about the Concise Oxford English Dictionary’s meaning of queer, Odd - Strange - suspicious - Doubtful - Slightly mad - Of Questionable character - Shady - Suspect and Unwell !!! I could add a few more facts and truths but there are a lot of good people out there that don’t want to be put off there dinner. Regards, Proud Homophobic !!!

Train accident The train accident on Friday morning was no surprise. What is surprising is that there haven’t been more accidents in this vicinity caused by the entrance to the railway station from Dillons Point Road not being sign posted. In this train accident case the car driver suddenly sees they have gone past the unmarked entrance so does a U-turn and attempts to go in through the exit and gets into difficulties. I have seen 100’s of vehicles, motor homes, cars and caravans, campervans, buses and cars having to do U-turns either in the entrance to the Bright Community Centre or the top end of Lane Street. There have been several near misses in the past but there is an accident waiting to happen. As most of these drivers are visitors to Blenheim I am sure it must give them a bad impression of our town. It will need to be fixed before the new I-Centre comes into being. Rex Bright.

NZ Post again Dear Ed It is now confirmed. NZ Post puts profits before people. After Christmas on Monday and Tuesday, there was no delivery by posties or at post office boxes. New Zealand’s infrastructure winds down to a full stop thanks to the SOE model. No worries about the Kiwi taxpayer who funds SOEs. My nomination for Scrooge of the Year - NZ Post. Don Coyote

one on one with the Sun

In honour of Charlie Higgins Blenheim teenager Charlie Higgins was a true speedway fan, loving family member and a keen spirited young man. Nearly four years have passed since his tragic death. His mother Trich Dixon shares with Celeste Lodewyk her memories of Charlie. Kind, caring, family devoted and a true-blooded speedway fan. To describe 13-year-old Charlie Higgins in a short sentence is very difficult. In fact to ask his family and friends how they would describe Charlie, they would simply smile and say “where do we start? Blenheim teenager Charlie Higgins was tragically taken from us in March 2007 as a result of a freak accident at Eastern States Speedway. Nearly four years later, the memory of a sprightly, keen spirited young man still brings a smile and the odd burst of laughter to the faces of those who knew him. Charlie was born and raised in Blenheim, most of which was spent at the speedway track, laughs his mother Trich Dixon. “The first time he experienced speedway was in my stomach, then later at three weeks of age he attended his first committee meeting. He was even recorded in the minutes of the meeting. “Plus he was the assistant street stock rep for me. All the guys knew him well so if there was something they needed and I was already busy elsewhere, they would always ask Charlie, she laughs. True to being born into speedway, Charlie had strong ambitions to become a stock car driver. “Charlie was one year away from being able to race youth mini stocks which he was so excited about. From there he always said his goal was to race stock cars, I even have drawings on the computer from when he would draw up different designs, Trich says. With broad shoulders and a mature personality, Charlie was proud of his ability to help out friends, family and speedway drivers with the fixing and maintenance of their cars. Despite the obvious joy of getting his hands greasy under the hood, Charlie would happily exchange a wrench for a spatula when it came to cooking. “He was really good in the kitchen, pancakes were definitely his domain, Trich says. A Holden fan at heart, Charlie idolized New Zealand race driver Greg Murphy. In fact the night Charlie died he was driven to speedway in a family friend’s Holden V8.

“He was brimming with excitement before he left the house and when I look back now I think, how appropriate, Trich smiles. The friendships and respect that the community held for Charlie was evident at his funeral when around 800 people met to say their final goodbyes. “As hard as it was delivering Charlies eulogy, everyone was laughing because it reflected how important it was for Charlie to make people happy. He went out of his way to help anyone and everyone, and that is something I think people will always remember him for, Trish says. Following the accident Trich initiated a ‘Fun Night’ in honour of Charlie which fast became a highlight of the speedway season. “I wanted this because I didn’t want people to be put off speedway. At the end of the day it was simply a freak accident. This year’s Charlie Higgins Fun Night will be held April 16 and will include his favourite class, ATV bikes. “This will be the third fun night Eastern States has run and already we have drivers from all over NZ ringing to confirm their entries. “At last year’s event we had two drivers come down to attend, all paid for out of their own pockets. We had never met before but they came along simply to support the night, that’s amazing, Trich says. Confirmed for the Charlie Higgins Fun Night are Super Stocks, Stock Cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Productions, Saloons and ATV Bikes. Mark this date on your calendar – April 16, Charlie Higgins Fun Night.

Charlie Higgins: a true-blooded racing and speedway fan.

Lightning strikes twice for boy By Damian George What shaped up to be a happy new year turned into a sour one for a 9-year-old Blenheim boy, who had his brand new bike stolen on New Year’s Eve. Dylan Hedges went to the Picton New Year’s celebrations with his parents on Friday, before waking up the next morning at his Howick Road home to discover his prized possession was gone. To make matters even worse, it is not the first time Dylan has had his bike taken from him. “That’s the second one now - he had one stolen about the same time last year,” his mother Nadine Hughes says. “Then we move here and the same thing happens again.”

The bike was a birthday present for Dylan from his parents, who bought it for him to ride to school. “The first few nights, he had it beside his bed and he polished it and cleaned it,” Nadine says. “How do you take it from him? He’s just a little boy.” Dylan says he started crying when he discovered his bike was gone, and said to his mum he was “not supposed to have a bike”. “I never stopped riding it. I just wouldn’t let go,” he says. Dylan has a simple message to the people who took his favourite possession and spolied his Christmas holiday: “If they can, can they please bring it back? It cost 300 dollars and I miss it.”

NOT A HAPPY CAMPER: Blenheim boy Dylan Hedges, 9, woke up on New Year’s Day to find his new bike had been stolen.

A week of mixed offences Wednesday, December 29 At 2.05pm, a 22-year-old fisherman was arrested for breaching his bail conditions. He was held in custody and was due to appear in Blenheim District Court on Thursday. At 6.10pm, a 33-year-old male tyre fitter was arrested for assaulting a woman after a domestic incident. He was also held in custody and due to appear in court on Thursday.

Just before midnight, a 52year-old man and his 26-yearold son, both labourers, were arrested for assault following an incident between the two in Kaikoura. The 52-year-old was also charged with resisting arrest. They have both been held in Custody and were due to appear in court on Thursday.

Thursday, December 30 At 1.25am, a 49-yearold unemployed man was arrested for disorderly behaviour after allegedly yelling abuse

Floods spare camping ground The recent floods have not put a dampener on tourists’ camping plans at Blenheim’s Top 10 Holiday Park. Although many areas in Marlborough were engulfed by water over the last week, the park has not been affected

by the downpours and impeded holiday-makers. “It hasn’t really affected us,” manager Chile Kremer says. “The river and the park were fine so we were okay - we were able to get everybody in.”

and smashing bottles on Hutcheson street. At 3.20am, a 28-year-old man was detained after he was found lying on the ground heavily intoxicated on Lucas Street. At 8.30am, a 17-year-old male student was arrested for failing to appear in court.

At 10.15pm, a 35-year-old unemployed man was arrested on the same charge.

At the same time, a 21-yearold unemployed woman was arrested after breaching her community work duties.

Friday, December 31

A half hour later, a 35-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching bail conditions.

At 12am, a 36-year-old male sickness beneficiary was arrested for assaulting police after an incident on Scott Street.

Three car accidents on SH1 Four people were injured over the Christmas period as a result of car accidents on State Highway One. Two women were injured following a crash in Riverlands on Sunday morning when their car rolled over just before 11am. A 15-year-old woman suffered injuries to her head and leg, while a 50-year-old woman suffered multiple cuts. Both women were taken to Wairau Hospital to treat their injuries. In another incident, a 16-year-old man received head injuries after his car crashed on December 23. The incident happened on State Highway One just after midday. The man was also taken to Wairau Hospital. On Christmas Day, a 56-year-old woman suffered chest injuries and multiple cuts after her car rolled over in Grassmere just before midday. She was also taken to Wairau Hospital to treat her injuries. St John say no further information is available on any of the accidents.

By Damian George When it comes to walking, Blenheim athlete Bary Neal is well ahead of the pack. When the 43-year-old lines up for Saturday’s King of the Withers event in Blenheim, he will be just ten kilometres away from recording his 50th consecutive victory in New Zealand. The incredible streak has included eleven wins in the now-defunct Annual Marlborough Walk from Blenheim to Picton, and eight consecutive victories in the King of the Withers event. He has nine victories overall in the latter. Neal says he has been tempted to hang up his boots a few times, but the lure of the half-century mark has become a motivating factor. “Me and a mate both decided to retire after the Vineyard Half Marathon last year, he says. “He’s still retired, but I thought ‘why not make it ten King of the Withers and 50 wins and call it quits?’. “After that, that’s it. Since his first race as a 17-year-old at the Marlborough Walk, Neal has gone on to record not only national success, but also international. He competed in a California race walking series while on his OE in his younger days, which included four races ranging from three to ten kilometres, and bagged three gold medals and one silver. He says his first few races were

Nelson given green light Nelson’s newly-upgraded Trafalgar Park is now fit for hosting Rugby World Cup 2011 matches. The refurbishment, which centred around a major revamp of the ground’s lights, was completed recently and will help the region to attract not just rugby matches, but also other events, a spokerperson says. The ground will host two of Italy’s Group C matches during the World Cup next year, against Russia on September 20 and USA on September 31. The new lights, provided by Philips Lighting, are three times as bright and do not interfere with any neighbouring properties. The spokesperson says Philips Lighting was the only lighting company able to meet the demands of the project managers.
