Seeing the faces of the youths light up is what Kurt Trixl loves best about his role as Youth Director for Picton Rotary Club. Last year Kurt’s own face lit up, when the organisation was named Educational and Child/Youth Development winner of the TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards. Entries for this year’s awards are open now. Kurt has been in his role for five years, and moved to New Zealand from Austria 36 years ago. He has lived in Picton for 30 years, where he works as a designer from his home. “I’ve always liked working with young people – seeing them develop from the early stages and being able to have input into their lives. That is very rewarding.” Kurt said a number of projects have taken place – science forums, leadership seminars, and exchange programmes. “Having been in the community so long, I remember people from when they were 10 year’s old, and are all grown up now and have achieved so much.” Continued page 2

Awards light up community Continued from page 1. Kurt said in recent years there has been less young people joining Rotary, which could have been because of the increased influence from technology, and less community spirit. “But I think the community spirit is coming back now,” he said. There are 11 members at Picton Rotary Club currently, and five more are joining soon, ranging in age. Various fundraising projects are organised throughout the year to enable Rotary programmes to take place. Kurt was president in 2009, when there were eight members involved, who individually raised $2500 each for Rotary events. “Rotary pays for the programmes it does,” said Kurt. He encouraged groups to put their name forward for this year’s community awards. “Be proud of what you are doing. We can see with our young people that the material is here.

Alyssa Ryan from Marlborough Girls' College won the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award last year.

Johanna O'Connell from Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society, the Supreme Winners of the TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards last year.

It has to be pushed a wee bit, but it can be seen in the kid’s eyes.” Alyssa Ryan was a senior student at Marlborough Girls’ College last year. She won the 2011 TrustPower Marlborough Youth Community Spirit Award. I nvolved in leadersh ip, sport, initiatives like Students Against Drink Driving and volunteering for the Blumine Island Conservation project,

tree planting at Fulton Creek, and helping at the Tui Reserve Nature Project, she was an example of youth getting involved in many aspects of the community. Aylssa was also selected as a member of the New Zealand delegation to UNFCC – United Nationals Youth Delegation on the Framework for Climate Change; the only secondary school student in New Zealand to be selected.

Birthday wrap up Mairi Whittle thought she had got off lightly for this year’s birthday prank from her work mates at The National Bank in Blenheim. But when the rural banker went out to her car on Wednesday, she realised she was mistaken. She blamed work mates Jo Barnett, Lisa Poole and Sarah Gray for the plastic surprise. “Normally they do something to your desk, so I thought I’d got away with it this time, but no,” said Mairi, who turns 23 years-old this Sunday. But they were good sports, and helped Mairi to get the plastic wrap off her car. “They used a 300m roll, but didn’t quite use the whole lot.” Will there be payback? “Yes, I think so,” said Mairi.”

The Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society was named Supreme Winner at the 2011 Tr ustPower Ma rlborough Community Awards. The society runs the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary, a community effort to create a safe haven for native birds and other flora and fauna in Picton Harbour. Jo O’Connell, secretary of the Society, said attending the national finals last year was humbling and inspirational. “It was a big think tank and a cross pollination of ideas. There are a lot of people out there doing a lot of great things.” A walkway and nature reserve is being developed at the moment. Jo said it will be a great asset for the local community, and nationwide. “We need to look after our flora and fauna,” she said. The tracks and trails, part of the walkway and nature reserve, will be open by theend of the year. See MDC ad for more information - page 5

Keep warm to live longer Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Warmth and comfort in your own home takes a bit of planning ahead. Jean Wilson attended The Good Homes workshop on Monday, and spoke to about 40 people in the community, including local residents and members of groups, about the importance of staying warm to keep healthy. As ex-president of Grey Power in Marlborough, and a regular attendee of hospital board meetings and council meetings, Jean is aware that elderly people need to keep warm. “If your home is warm, bright and sunny you are going to live a lot longer. I’m over 80 now and I don’t consider myself old.” The Good Homes project is funded by the Public Good Science Fund, and Marlborough has been a featuring region in the project that began four years ago. Jean had double glazing put into her house this week, and said it just took a bit of planning. “I had a little nest egg to do repairs around the house. I have been saving up for years. As a widow and on superannuation, when you put money aside, it’s not too bad.” Jean and her late husband David moved into their Blenheim house in 1955, which was built during WWII. “It was just a little box when we moved in. We built another bedroom on in the 1960’s and put insulation in the ceiling.” Insulation in the walls, floors and ceiling has continued to be a priority.

dear readers A special thank you for all those who helped our town deliverer Richard, who collapsed late last Friday afternoon. Thank you to those who called the ambulance, took his trolley in off the street and called to notify us of his accident. We are all very appreciative of your kindness. ski field open Jean wilson spoke at the Good Homes seminar this week in Blenheim, encouraging elderly people to put time and money aside to make sure their house is warm, with helpful additions like double-glazed windows.

“Power bills decrease by one third when a house is well insulated.” Cutting branches that block sunlight, closing curtains when the sun goes down, painting white lines around the outside steps for easy visibility, making sure door handles are easy to turn, and floors are non-slip are other works Jean has done, to make her house safe and warm. “It’s a matter of going through room by room and seeing what needs doing.”

Jean would like to see more funding for double glazing in people’s homes, as it would help ease the health system. “People recover better at home, and rates of asthma decrease with warmer homes. And it’s about making the home safe.” Good Homes has created a checklist, which helps people identify work that needs doing. For further information on these Tools, visit www.goodhomes.co.nz

Rainbow Ski Area has been closed while the access road was repaired. The road is expected to be completed today. The rain last weekend had a significant effect on the field. The snow pack has now dried out and snow has been moved onto the lower slopes to allow operation of the learner and intermediate areas this weekend.

Pak’n’Save progress

reBel sports on the way Work is now underway on Blenheim’s new Rebel Sport site on Main St. Dormer Construction and Blenheim’s Crafar Crouch started ground work on the site last week, while local construction company TH Barnes has the contract for the build. Rod Duke, group managing director and deputy chairman of Briscoe Group Limited, which own Rebel Sport said the build will take about 16 weeks. The Lifetime Mortgage Solutions building will be demolished to make room for the new car park once it has relocated into the first floor of the new building.

new courier team Fastway Couriers customers in Nelson will benefit from an improved courier service, as husband and wife ‘power team’ takes over Fastway’s Nelson depot. With six years collective experience in Fastway Couriers’ operational management and courier runs, Steve and Theresa Power have a proven ability within the company. Steve says their key focus over the past six weeks has been finding and recruiting the very best staff in the area.

The new Pak’n’Save building is progressing well says supermarket owner Mark Elkington. “Yes we are pleased with the progress and Robinson Con-

struction are doing an excellent job,” he told the Sun. The 6000 square metre supermarket is one of the major anchor tenants at the West-

wood Park on Middle Renwick Rd and is still on target to be completed by February next year. With the floor slab down you

can get some sense of size Mark said and with the tilt slab concrete going up and now the steel beams, it is progressing well and taking shape, he says.

Forum helps find opportunities in quake rebuild Local businesses can learn how they can do their share for the Christchurch rebuild at a forum held in Blenheim next month. The Marlborough District Council and the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce have arranged the MarlboroughChristchurch Rebuild Opportunities (MACRO) forum to help Marlborough businesses better understand the growing range of opportunities that are emerging in and around Christchurch. Mayor Alistair Sowman says while

some Marlborough-based businesses are already participating in the rebuild work, others may not yet have grasped the size and scale of the prospects. “With up to $30B to be spent over the next decade or two, the impact on the whole South Island economy should be enormous and I want to make sure that our firms fully appreciate how they can best participate in what will undoubtedly become a construction boom.” One of the key opportunities for Marlborough, he said, was as a supply

point for goods and services; construction goods and other materials as well as draughting, design and landscaping services. The forum will include a series of short presentations from people with practical knowledge of the way the building and construction industry is working in Christchurch. Speakers at the forum are Leighs Construction CEO Anthony Leighs; director of Fortis Construction and Equity Trust Pacific Ernest Duval; CEO

of Salcom and chair of the Canterbury Communities Earthquake Recovery Network Tom McBrearty; director of Arrow International (NZ) Ltd based in Christchurch Ian Smith; Andrew Lawson of Andrew Lawson Builder Ltd, and Carl Pascoe, a Christchurchbased facilitator who has handled accreditation requirements for Fletchers Construction and the EQC. The MACRO Forum will be held from 2pm-5pm on Friday 10 August at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

new Beer launch in old Bank tavern The Old Bank Tavern in Redwood Village will host the Marlborough launch of the new winter beer from Dale’s Brewing Company on Friday July 27. At 6:15, Nelson brewer, Dale Holland will unveil his new brew on the night, offering free tastings and talking with local craft beer lovers. Those attending will also have the chance to sample the brewer’s full range as his two other beers will be available on tap.

The introduction of a new set of insurance regulations will force some independent brokers out of business according to an industry expert. The new regulations in the Financial Advisers Act and its companion the Financial Service Providers Act (the FA Act and the FSP Act) and the more demanding compliance and complaints legislation, along with industry changes following the Canterbury Earthquakes, is making it difficult for small insurance businesses to survive.

Dear Ed,

Many voices have been raised in opposition to state asset sales proceeds of which are intended to ease our financial dilemma, perhaps our politicians could put politics aside for once and pull together for the good of the country, agreeing to the leasing of state assets as an alternative to outright sales. In commerce for instance the owners of buildings and shop premises draw up a lease agreement outlining the terms and conditions which must be agreed to. I.e.: monthly rental, rates, insurance and maintenance clauses. In addition more often than not there is a substantial one off irrevocable ingoing premium (key money)

Dear Ed,

In response to Judy Shanahan comments re: My court Victory. Sun Paper Friday 13th. If after fitting out said premises, business does not meet with expectations, then alas the lessee must move on. The landlord still owns his asset and in such circumstances, is in a position to repeat the process ad infinitum. The point being, if perhaps by law, all political parties were made to become trustees of state assets and become the lesser, applying similar principals, they would remain in a position to apply this lease revenue to help remedy the same financial dilemma, it may take longer but Rome wasn’t built in a day. We could still have our cake and eat it and in the process win over some of these hardcore opponents of presently intended State Asset Sales. George Cathcart

Grants up for grabs with Outward Bound As Outward Bound celebrates its 50th anniversary, the organization is giving local residents the chance to do one of its courses with the help of a scholarship available through the Marlborough First Light Foundation. Grants of up to 50-percent of the total expense of an Outward Bound course are now up for grabs primarily for Malburians from 16 years and over. Former Queen Charlotte College student, Holly McLeod, took part in a 21-day Outward Bound Student Leaders course in January 2011, thanks to the First Light Foundation. “After being encouraged to apply, I became the recipient of one of the First Light Scholarships. I could not have known then how much I would value the course and how lucky I was to

have been given the opportunity to experience the magic that is Outward Bound.” Holly said the scholarship came at a time during her last year at high school when she felt it was time to step outside her comfort zone and into a leadership role. “Outward Bound equips you with the skills you need to really uncover your potential. You learn teamwork and leadership skills but the most exciting part of the course is what you learn about yourself. You discover and unpack your strengths and weaknesses and start to understand who you are as a person and who you want to become. “Thanks to Outward Bound, I returned to my final year of school with a new found confidence and a stronger sense of self. I was ready to take on new challenges

and give them everything I had.” Outward Bound Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Taylor, said the organisation had just completed one its busiest periods, with all of its courses completely filled for March and April. “Through the generous support of the Marlborough First Light Foundation we’re able to offer a number of grants for local residents to unlock their full potential by attending an Outward Bound course in their own backyard.” The First Light scholarships began after 14 young students attended a 21-day Outward Bound Leadership course. They were inspired to start a fund that would ultimately help young Marlborough people to attend Outward Bound courses. Full grant information and application process is available at www.outwardbound.co.nz.

Lyndon Robinson from Scaffold Marlborough Ltd says the newly reinforced law about height restrictions on construction sites could be due to Christchurch’s building boom after the earthquakes.

Work on building over 2.4 metres require scaffolding Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Lyndon Robinson of Scaffold Marlborough Ltd Christchurch’s building boom, due to the earthquakes, is an opportunity to reinforce New Zealand’s existing building laws. Since July 1, the Department of Labour has announced it will be sending health and safety inspectors to building sites around New Zealand, to reinforce the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 in the construction sector, as part of the Labour Group’s Preventing Falls from Height project. Any work over 2.4 metres would now require scaffolding under the new Best Practice Guidelines for Working at Heights, a rule prepared by the Department of Labour with the Roofing Association of New Zealand. The Department of Labour stated on its website that builders, roofers, electrical workers, painters and decorators who are at high risk of falling from while working on roofs, off ladders and unsafe working platforms would be the ones most heavily targeted. Lyndon, who started his business in 2005, said in the past, scaffolding has only been used as a safety measurement on an eight-foot stud house, or single story, and higher. Now every house will have to have some form of scaffold, which he admitted would make business busier for him. He said tradespeople could either

hire scaffolding equipment, or buy it themselves. “I don’t really mind whichever way they go, as long as they do it safely.” Lyndon said the extra cost the consumer would have would not be significant. “If it saves a life, it’s worth it.” He said complacency is the biggest threat, with 80% of falls at under 2.4 metres. “People get relaxed when they are at a lower height.” Failure to meet the guidelines can lead to enforcement by health and safety inspectors such as a written warning, a prohibition notice, an infringement fine or in the most serious cases, prosecution. Neville Saul from Zorite Roofing in Blenheim is an external plasterer. He is not happy about the reinforced requirement. “It’s been made by people who have never been in the trade, who have never worked in the situation we work in.” He said some of the jobs will be difficult to do with the scaffolding. “It will be a bit of a mission.” Neville said clearer guidelines are needed from The Department of Labour about the rules, because not everyone understands them yet. “It’s really come to a head in the past couple of months, and everyone is trying to get answers.”

BEETROOT JUICE FOR A HEALTHY BRAIN Reports from a recent US study has shown that a daily glass of beetroot juice could act as a good preventative against the onset of dementia. The short trial conducted over four days involved a group of elderly respondents who were fed a diet either high or low in nitrates. The “within subject” design of the procedure meant that each participant was given both diets and the effects of each diet on their blood flow was compared. Nitrates are present in beetroot and many other vegetables. In the body they are converted into nitrites to increase blood flow which benefits the brain tremendously. The respondents’ speed of blood flow to different parts of the brain was measured on a scan. It was found that blood flow to certain areas in the brain increased on a high nitrate diet as compared to one low in nitrates. The study was divided into two parts. The aim of the preliminary study conducted on five people over 70 was to test the time taken for a high nitrate meal to be converted in the blood to peak levels of nitrite.

It was followed by a larger study carried out on 14 participants aged 70 or older. People who took certain medications or suffered from particular disorders were excluded from the trial. However, scientists are cautious about coming to definite conclusions from this research, which was conducted on a small sample and over a very short timescale. Further studies will be needed to ascertain whether a diet rich in nitrates is sufficient to combat dementia or improve brain function. The researchers say that nitrite is proved to widen blood vessels and increase blood flow. Due to this there are hopes it can become a good treatment for a wide range of diseases. They maintain that nitrite has many health benefits which include lowering blood pressure, improved gut health and better ability to sustain exercise. It is envisaged that dietary nitrite could assist in conditions that are caused by reduced blood flow and include dementia, Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline.

Gardening

Tips

BEETROOT CHUTNEY Ingredients: 1kg peeled beetroot 750g peeled onions 1kg sugar 1 dessertspoon salt 1 desssertspoon allspice 75ml vinegar 2 1/2 heaped tbspns cornflour Mince beetroot and onions, add sugar, seasonings and vinegar. Boil for 20 minutes. Thicken with cornflour then boil for another 5 minutes and bottle.

Tips for preserving

• Always use hot sterilised jars. Whether new or recycled, wash the jars and lids separately. • Malt vinegar was the only choice back then but you could also use white wine or cider vinegar. • Use sugar containing pectin (like Chelsea jamsetting sugar) for sweet preserves. • Hot seal: if you want your preserves to keep then put the lid on as soon as you pour the preserve in the jar to ensure a good seal.

FASCINATING GARDENING FACTS Dandelio n s m ig h t seem like weeds, but the flowers and leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and potassium. One cup of dandelion greens provides 7,000-13,000 I.U. of vitamin A.

• Always use warm water on seedlings. Tiny plants can be shocked by too cold water. • Choose black trays and pottles. • Cleaning your glass. It’s important to let in as much sunlight as possible. • Keep doors closed. Check vents that might allow heat to leak out. • Stack up heat-attracting blocks of stone or brick, close to seedlings, to keep them warm at night.] • Place trays and pottles toward the middle of the glasshouse. It’s colder just beside the thin, clear walls.

Sustainability difficult with high costs Story and photo by Annabelle Latz

No farming practice is sustainable at the moment, according to Justin Stevens, branch chairman of the Marlborough Deer Farmers Assn. The Seddon-based farmer said sustainability should be a part of any business. He has been farming Red deer for more than two decades, and said things are not getting easier. “But you have got to keep doing what you are doing, and we are getting better and better, as is everyone.” The Stevens run 250 velveting stags, 150 hinds and 130 young stock. “Most costs have tripled in the last 10 to 12 years, but incomes have stayed the same.” NZ Landcare Trust has recently launched the ‘New Zealand Deer Farmers Landcare Manual’ at a recent deer industry conference. The manual aims to be a practical reference guide for all New Zealand deer farmers to manage their productivity in an environmentally sustainable way. Justin embraces sustainability as part of his farming methods. He and his wife Rebecca and their three sons have been involved in the farm since 1985. They are both from Southland, and both their parents moved to Marlborough in the late 1970’s. They lease 110 hectares of rolling country off Justin’s parents, and own 70ha. “Twelve years ago there were more than 100 deer farms in Marlborough, now there are about 30,” said Justin. He said a lot of land has been

converted to grapes now. “People learned you could make a lot more money off grapes per acre than deer.” The Stevens grow some grapes for Saint Clair, and used to farm sheep but sold their last ones six years ago. Justin said sustainable farming comes in many different forms – fencing off waterways, feeding methods, planting choices, and machinery used. Because of huge price increases over the years, everything costs more. “Deer netting has doubled in price in the last 10 years, so have posts. When we were getting $10/ kg in 2001 we could buy netting for $150 per roll, and now we are getting $8.50/kg and paying $300 per roll. And people want to know why deer farmers aren’t racing around fencing.” Justin said fencing off waterways like their creek is very expensive, and ripping out Willow trees to do so risks losing bird life. He said it is all about balance. “The big thing that people have to get their head around at the moment is that if you want to keep cattle out of a creek it just takes a few wires. But for deer it’s $8/ metre, just for the materials.” Venison is currently at $8.50/kg for the spring schedule (AugustOctober), which includes coproducts tail, pelt, and pizzle, and tails can range from $5-$45, and pelts can reach $60. In 2010 venison was $10.50, and in 2004 it was $5.80. The average venison weight is 60kg. “Once they weigh over 85kg

Justin Stevens farms red deer at Seddon, and sustainability is a method that every business person strives for, but has its financial challenges.

their price will drop, because the market prefers smaller cuts.” Velvet has experienced similar fluctuations. In 2007 it was $118/kg, and has dropped as low as $58. The average price for 2011-2012 was $80. The average velvet weight of 4kg per stag. Justin said budgeting is very difficult, as all these factors have to be taken into account when assessing stock numbers, and choosing replacements. Velveting ability is assessed when stock are three years old. Being smart with feeding methods is one aspect of farming the Stevens have control over. Justin chooses to feed on grass and

hay, and sow paddocks, rather than buy in bailage, and factor in wear and tear on farm machinery. “We do all the budgets. I know you have to spend money to make money, but we know what we have available to spend. Spending $30,000 on bailage and machinery costs is 25% of the deer income.” The Stevens have 75% of their farm as native grasses. Some of his stags are feeding on rape at the moment. Justin would like to plant more crops for feeding, but it is just a matter of cost. “The one thing that has come down in price is interest rates.” The Stevens said venison needs to be marketed better for the consumer, and should be brought down in price,

because at nearly $30/kg on the shelf, is too much for many people, despite the health benefits. “We have spent the best part of $80,000 on fencing, but if the consumer doesn’t want to pay, we won’t make money,” said Justin. Rebecca said young people need to be encouraged to get into farming, but at the moment it is a very difficult industry to make money in. “It’s a big gamble,” she said. Rebecca and Justin encourage all farmers to be as sustainable as they can, so young peole can enjoy farming, but said the economy is working against them. “Sustainability doesn’t just happen over night,” said Justin.

Official launch of Marlborough-Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority The new Marlborough-Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority was made official yesterday evening. The launch took place at the Marlborough Emergency Operations Centre, with the Minister of Internal Affairs Hon Chris Tremain and the Fire Service Commission Chair Rt Hon Wyatt Creech as guest speakers. Guests included Fire Service Commission members Bob Francis and Dave McFarlane, NZ Fire Service National Commander

Paul Baxter and the National Rural Fire Officer Murray Dudfield. The chairman of the transition board for the new Fire Authority Mark Wheeler said the launch marked the restructuring of our regional rural fire services into an organisation which can better coordinate the training of the region’s fire fighters, and give a higher profile to the important work of educating the public and key industries on issues around the often high fire risk in this part

Hanging up the hose By Annabelle Latz Nigel and Chris Morrison will still lend a hand when the siren sounds at the Linkwater Fire Force base. But Nigel admitted he will no longer be worrying if his undies were on the right way around. Last weekend he stepped down as fire chief, and his wife Chris stepped down as secretary. “I’ll still go down and help them out though,” said Nigel. They have both been heavily involved in the Force since the 1970’s, and Nigel has been chief fire officer for 31 years. “I’m really proud of what we have achieved, it’s been a great team effort.” Nigel has thoroughly enjoyed his years with the Force, forming great friendships and seeing many changes within the industry. The great rapport his Force has had with the urban brigades and other rural forces and boat trips to the outer Marlborough Sounds to fight fires are fond memories he will keep forever. “The brigade just started off with a tractor and trailer. I joined as a way to get involved in the community, and it became a hobby for me.” The Morrison’s have a dairy farm and a contracting business in Linkwater, so have always been heavily involved in the community. Nigel said they are lucky at the Force, because they have never been short of enthusiastic young members. He said this was because of strong family and community involvement. Nigel was confident that the Force will continue on successfully. “There’s a great group of young people in the brigade, who will now be running it with their new ideas.” Nigel and Chris’s son Alastair is taking over as chief fire officer next month, and their daughter Karen is a volunteer fire fighter. “My message to him is just to listen to his

Mr McNamara indicated he wanted to raise public understanding of the fire risk faced by Marlborough and the regionwide preparedness for a major fire.

I was making tea for them all to keep them warm, and the wind from the blades just sucked everything up from the table, even the sugar went flying!” The biggest change in her role as secretary has been the increase in paperwork, but the skill of making tea and sandwiches to keep everyone going during long operations has never changed. “And I’d always go down to the station when there was a call out, to lock up their cars and make sure everything was alright. I will probably keep doing that.” Linkwater Fire Force has been a huge part of their lives, and will be hard to just let go of. “The fire stuff used to just slot into place and we’d do what needed to be done.”

Kirwan new blues coach Former All Black John Kirwan returns to Auckland as the new head coach of the Blues, with incumbent Pat Lam missing out after four years in charge. Kirwan returns to coach in New Zealand after stints with Japan (2007-2011) and Italy (2002-2005) and will take over the Blues in August. He has signed a two-year contract for the 2013 and 2014 Super Rugby seasons.

van dyK guides magic to win The Magic’s goal shooter Irene van Dyk, slotted the crucial goal in Monday’s night’s hard fought netball match to draw the game 44-all and force the match into extra time against the Northern Mystics. The Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic won the game 57-48 setting up an exciting final against the Vixens in Melbourne this Sunday. Irene van Dyk’s mother died in South Africa moments before the game.

Keiran read out Kieran Read has lost his race to be fit for the Crusaders’ Super Rugby playoff eliminator with the Bulls. Coach Todd Blackadder has resisted the temptation to start his All Blacks star, opting again for captain Richie McCaw at the back of the scrum and Matt Todd on the openside. Blackadder has made two changes in the forwards and one in the backs to play the Bulls at AMI Stadium in Christchurch. Wyatt Crockett gets the start at loosehead prop with Ben Franks moving to the bench, while locks Sam Whitelock and Tom Donnelly switch positions from last week’s 38-24 win over the Western Force.

nZ white socKs miss qualiFying sPot The New Zealand White Sox’s hopes of making the women’s world softball championship playoffs are over after a 6-5 loss to Italy in Canada on Thursday. New Zealand, who have a twowin four-loss record, are now in fifth-equal place in section B with Chinese Taipei. Italy (3-3) are fourth behind Japan, Canada and Australia. Even if the White Sox beat Chinese Taipei tomorrow and Italy lose to Canada, they would miss out on the fourth qualifying spot under International Softball Federation rules because of today’s defeat to the Italians.

Sponsor a post Support Eastern States Speedway in rebuilding safety fence

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Speedway to many Marlburians is more than just a spectator sport. The growling engines, rumbling vibrations underfoot and sense of adrenaline is what speedway fans live for. This is something Eastern States Speedway has delivered since its humble beginnings, but after four decades of local history the club is now facing a mammoth task, and it needs your help. The 2011/2012 committee is currently working toward replacing the track’s safety fencing in order for it to comply with new Speedway New Zealand (SNZ) safety regulations. The challenges being faced include fundraising, labour and the deadline to have it completed in time for the new season beginning September. The club was successful in being granted a $30,000 grant from the Canterbury Community Trust earlier this year, but in order for the committee to reach its fundraising goal community support is needed. The consequence of not having the fence completed will mean the track will be forced to operate as

eastern states speedway vice president and life member John blokker is heavily involved in the rebuild of the track’s safety fence

a ‘Division Two’ track, with no affiliation to SNZ. But according to the club’s vice president John Blokker, finishing the fence on time is the committee’s top priority. “We have committed ourselves to finishing and won’t be racing until it’s done. “Four main posts will be going in this weekend which shows we are definitely moving ahead,” he

says. The CCT grant has helped to pay for much of the materials and club members are carrying out most of the work, but to help complete the job the club is looking to gain sponsorship for the 134 posts required to hold the fence together. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to show their support by purchasing the naming rights to a post, and in return will have

their name on it for as long as the post stands. To sponsor a post costs only $150, or $150+GST for businesses. To find out more you can download a form off the club’s website, www.easternstatesspeedway. co.nz or contact president Stu Coutts on 027 470 0798. More on this will feature in next Wednesday’s Sun.

Action again for Rainbow ski area Story by Annabelle Latz The recent run of savage winter weather only halted Rainbow Ski Area’s snow action for a short time. “The road is fixed and we are looking good for opening today,” said spokesperson Hamish Neill. The access road was damaged after heavy rain, and work began on Tuesday to repair it. Rainbow has a base currently of between 10-55cm, snow is being made whenever possible, and Hamish complemented the success of the snow fences to maximise their base. “The snow fences basically store the snow. This is a classic

example of why we do it. We stock pile the snow and then spread it out with the grader.” There will be a trial from top to bottom for skiers and riders. Hamish has been pleased with the season so far, and said adverse weather was all part of the industry. “It’s all part of the game. I’m looking around for the Roman God of Snow, whoever it is, and I’m hoping for some advice.” He said considering the less desirable conditions lately, conditions are good. “The skiing and boarding will still be good, the snow will just be a bit limited.”
