Workers fired after protest

By Damian George news@blenheimsun.co.nz Two Americans in New Zealand on a working holiday visa have been laid off after confronting their manager about employment conditions they say are ripping off workers.

James and Alex Clark, who were working as labourers on contracted vineyards for Blenheim backpackers Kiwi Bunk

House, complained to the company about employees being paid below minimum wage and restrictive clauses in employee contracts.

The pair, who joined the organisation three weeks ago, never signed a contract, but say those who did are being tied to them by threats of substantial financial penalties if they quit.

At the same time, workers are fre-

quently pleading with the company to give them the money they are legally entitled to, James says.

“People just feel completely stuck – everybody that works there is a backpacker that just needs money really bad,” he told The Sun. “People are so stressed out because they don’t even have enough money to buy groceries.” Continued Page 3.

Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim’s new i-SITE Visitor Centre could easily take the title of the best centre in the country, says Tourism New Zealand CEO Paul Yeo. The new building was officially opened on Monday to a group of more than 150 local tourism industry and business people.

“Nelson’s i-SITE was regarded as the best in NZ, but now looking at the completed

building here today I think they may lose their title,” Paul joked to the crowd.

The building was designed

by Studio of Pacific Architecture and built by local company Haack Construction.

Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said she was proud of the new visitor centre and spoke of the importance of inspiring travellers to spend time in Marlborough.

The opening ceremony began with a number of speeches and ended with the unveiling of a Taonga at the entrance to the building, installed by local iwi Rangitane.

The carving “Kei Puta te Wairau” (behold the bounty of Wairau) was carved by local man Terry Starkey, who was also present at the unveiling.

Under the contracts, employees are bound to the company until August 30.

If they leave, the company will hold two weeks’ [or 90 hours] pay and demand two weeks’ rent [$260] to compensate accommodation providers.

Employees are also asked to complete up to three days of unpaid training upon their employment.

James says the company is taking advantage of tourists who speak English as a second language and do not fully understand the contracts.

He says the company has sometimes refused to pay workers the minimum hourly rate of $13 they are entitled to under law.

“I’m just disappointed and frustrated to have to fight just to get the legal requirements,” he says.

“There are people working really hard, coming home with bloody hands.

“They’re physically exhausted and then they have to fight for

the money that they’ve earned.”

The angered pair approached company representatives on Friday with a list of requested revisions to their contracts, but was instead given their marching orders.

Kiwi Bunk House directors Nicolette Maycroft and Stephen Akehurst were not available for comment yesterday or on Monday.

Marlborough Community Law manager Gordon Strang says the contract offered to James and Alex is one he “wouldn’t want to sign”.

He says he has seen many examples of vineyard contractor employment agreements which appear to heavily favour the employer.

While unsure of the legalities behind offering unpaid employment, it is not something he encourages.

Regarding the contract’s ‘out clause’, Mr Strang says: “It looks unfair because it doesn’t go both ways.

“Loyalty is a two-way thing

and that’s what we expect in our contracts.”

He says companies can often provide short-term contracts to overseas workers which are slanted one-way, as these workers are usually not in the country long enough to challenge unbalanced clauses through the courts.

“Employees are being given very little chance to negotiate the contracts,” he says.

“It’s very much ‘take it or leave it’.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Labour says their Nelson office has received a formal complaint from James and Alex.

As a result, the department is unable to comment on the situation.

“We are aware of it and are looking into it,” the spokesperson says.

The department says there are no concrete rules regarding unpaid work, and this is usually agreed upon by the employer and employee at the time of employment.

Confusion over heat pump contract

By Damian George Local businesses have been assured they were given first dibs on the contract for installing 177 heat pumps in council-owned homes across Marlborough.

The businesses had expressed some confusion as to why a Nelson company was awarded the contract recently, and why it was never advertised.

However, Marlborough District Council support services manager Dean Heiford says no local companies had been certified by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority [EECA], which they

needed to have been in order for the council to access a government subsidy for the project.

“We asked the EECA a number of times if there was anyone qualified to do the job in this region, because we were conscious of providing local work, but we were assured there was not,” he says.

Mr Heiford says Air Con Nelson, the company awarded the contract, are free to sub-contract to local companies if they wish.

Confusion had arisen among local companies as many install equipment which is certified by the EECA.

But an EECA spokesperson confirmed no Blenheim companies are EECA accredited and did not apply to be when proposals were sought in 2009.

Blenheim Airconditioning and Refrigeration Services engineer Rhys Williams says companies are disappointed they are no longer able to join the EECA programme.

“It would be nice to see if someone local could do [the job],” he says.

“The government should have put more of an effort into keeping the work local - we are in a recession and we are all looking for work.”

The approaching College Formal got me thinking about such special occasions (known in my day as a Debutante Ball) generating as much anticipation and preparation as the less stuffy, yet equally important, School Formal.

Amongst my ‘treasures’ are the elbow-length, lurexthread gloves from my first ball, and mementoes from my son and daughter’s Formal. Elizabeth still wears the earrings from that occasion and Hamish has his bow-tie!

Such occasions are milestones and memories in both our lives and those of our children. The occasion of our daughter ’s Formal was the year I passed on a ring which had been handed down to women in my mother’s family for six generations. (I hankered after that ring but never got to wear it! It lay in my mother’s drawer needing only the stone re-set until she suddenly realised it wasn’t being enjoyed by anyone). I’m delighted it was passed to Elizabeth who has worn it every day! It’s a lovely antique rose gold, wide-band ring with garnet but, as you can imagine, worn quite thin.

This week our jeweller remade the ring , using the same gold (plus a little more)- and garnet (a very popular stone in the late 19th century) exactly as before. The ring will be worn with confidence now and ...by future generations.

Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk People of all ages turned out with their boars, possums, rabbits and hares to the Woodbourne Tavern on Sunday for the prize giving of the Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp held over the weekend.

This was the second time this event has been held which has been officially named New Zealand’s largest pig hunting competition.

Hunters began their search for sizeable boars on Friday last week with the hope of winning the title of the heaviest boar.

The event was hosted by hunting show presenter Howie Morrison Jnr and attracted many hunters from all over NZ. Hooked on Boars magazine editor and event organiser Matt Willis told the Sun that this year was more successful than last.

“We thought last year was good, this year was even bigger. We had 559 entries and 148 boars weighed in which were more than last year so we are really pleased with how it turned out.

“A huge thank you to our fantastic sponsors and the many volunteers who helped to make this event a success,” he says.

A new addition to the event’s prize giving included the donation of $1000 to the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade by the Hooked on Boars magazine and Woodbourne Tavern.

The heaviest boar was caught by a young guns entrant, local girl Tamara Porter which weighed in at 74kg.

Winner of the heaviest boar in the open division was Nathan Hall with his 67.5kg boar, in second was Thomas Schroder, third was Kelly Lee who also won the prize for the biggest boar tusks, fourth was Sean Dobbs and fifth was Ryan Nisbett.

Blenheim driving habits ‘quite poor’

By Damian George The Marlborough Road Safety Council says it is concerned at the number of drivers not following basic road rules at some intersections in Blenheim.

The organisation carried out three 15-minute surveys at various intersections in the town on Thursday, with nearly half of the drivers either not adhering to stop signs or failing to use their indicators.

Marlborough Road Safety Council secretary Geoff Powell says the number of

people breaching the rules is “quite poor”.

“Fifty percent - that’s a long way to go in terms of improvement,” he says.

“The ultimate [number] would be 100 percent. Hopefully, there’ll be an increase on 50 percent and you would hope quite quickly.”

The first of the council’s surveys took place at the Cleghorn St and Weld St intersection in Redwoodtown, where 15 out of 32 vehicles did not stop completely at the stop sign.

Eight out of 20 vehicles failed to stop at the Murphy’s Rd and Old Renwick Rd intersection in Springlands.

The inaugural event drew large crowds as competitors battled the icy winds to work furiously in the vines vying for a top position in the Marlborough Silver Secateurs Competition.

The day was concluded with presentations and a quiz round before the winners were announced. In first place was James Bowskill of Jackson Estate, second was Jacqueline MacLaurin of Wither Hills and in third was Matthew Duggan of Delegats Wine.

After winning the regional competition James will now go on to compete at the national Young Viticulturist of the Year which will determine who will represent the viticulture sector at the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition in November.

WildlifE SanCtuary rECEivES grant A new $76,498 grant awarded to Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary from the NZ Lottery Grants Board means they can now move ahead and construct a jetty and pontoon for public access.

The sanctuary is on track so that by Christmas 2012 locals and visitors can take the 10 minute boat ride from Picton to enjoy the 40 hectare native sanctuary.

Kaipupu Point sits right beside the Ferry Port of Picton. The Wildlife Sanctuary that is taking shape on this peninsula was started by a number of enthusiasts in the community in 2006.

By Damian George Kaikoura Electorate MP Colin King is urging more Marlburians to take advantage of the government’s Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart programme.

The energy saving scheme, which began in 2009, offers subsidies for insulation and heat pump installation and aims to retrofit nearly 200,000 houses across New Zealand by 2012.

Mr King, who was on hand to observe the insulation of a Blenheim house last week, says more home owners in the region need to utilise the service to help make their homes warmer and reduce power bills.

Unemployment rates ‘appalling’ - Brash

By Damian George Unemployment rates among young New Zealanders are “truly appalling” and not having a youth minimum wage is contributing to the problem, ACT Party leader Don Brash says.

The former National Party leader, who made a surprise return to politics in April, was in Blenheim for a oneday visit last Wednesday as part of his nationwide pre-election jaunt across New Zealand provincial centres.

In an interview with The Sun, Dr Brash said he was “deeply disappointed” the National government had not opted to re-establish the youth wage.

He pointed out 27 percent of 16 to

19-year-olds in New Zealand were unemployed, while the Maori unemployment rate among the same age group was 38 percent.

“That is a truly appalling number,” he said of the latter figure.

“One of the main factors driving that is the fact that, under current law, employers are obliged to pay the adult minimum wage to a 16-year-old.

“If an employer can pay the same price for someone who is three or four years older and with more experience, why would they have a 16-year-old?”

Dr Brash spoke at the Marlborough Convention Centre last Wednesday as part of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce inspiring speakers series.

Early childhood learning centre Nga Puawai Kohanga Reo is hoping to use funds raised from a gala it is holding next month to help in the upgrade of its facility.

Kohanga kaiako [head teacher] Deedee Bancroft says the money generated will go towards the $810,000 needed to complete the refurbishment.

“We want to get the place up to standard – that includes getting a new clothes line, dryer, washing machine and other things.”

Dear Ed, Are our mayor and his bunch of “top five” nuts?

I mean the controversial “corruption” investigation. Messrs Dew, Jerram, Taylor, Maher and Madame Andrews and the mayor scream blue murder over $70,000 for the cost of the investigation saying Jamie Arbuckle who raised the matter, should pay.

But they are not blinking an eye over millions of dollars for a new theatre on

a site that intrudes onto public road and will be a large big blob visually.

They used to say “pay peanuts” and you will get monkeys onto council.

We’re paying top quality and big numbers of nuts and we have a bunch of gorillas.

The gorilla gang look on it as a full time salary too, $40,000 to $50,000.

It was great to visit the Rugby World Cup road show event with TV1 & Tamati Coffy et al when it visited Blenheim on July 12th.

Great to see Tamati all decked out in USA clothing and giving away USA related prizes....but wait on here.... is Blenheim not playing host to the Russians?

Good thing the Cold War is over but surely folks a wee bitty more intellectual co-ordination could have seen Tamati decked out in a Russian theme especially as the food on display and other various exhibits all carried a Russian theme?

Had the event not been broadcast live on TV1 the “error” may have gone

largely unnoticed.

It was an embarrassing shame, however, to see Tamati repeatedly apologise for wearing the wrong wardrobe!

Your newspaper recently carried a full page story about those responsible for the local organisation of the event.

With 49 days to go it’s a real shame the work purportedly being done since 2009 when said people were appointed has, and continues to go, pretty much unnoticed.

Could those “responsible” (and I use this term lightly) please explain their actions via this column so we might all be assured that something is happening out there?

A medical marvel Using stem cell treatment on dogs is a medical breakthrough, but only ‘scratches the surface’ of the possibilities it opens up.

Damian George talks to Stuart Burrough about his involvement in the exciting revolution.

Local veterinarian Stuart Burrough can understand people’s caution when it comes to using stem cell therapy on their dogs.

But The Vet Centre managing director has absolutely no doubt he and his team have made the right call in choosing to offer the treatment to the animals here.

Used specifically to treat arthritis - for now - Stuart and three of his colleagues undertook the first ever stem cell transfer performed on a dog in the South Island late last year.

The 14-year-old pug, which had arthritis in both hips, elbows and back, is now completely pain-free with the help of a small dose of anti-inflammatories.

Two other dogs operated on this year have experienced similar results, with one dog’s owner proclaiming it a “miracle”, and the other animal in “a lot less pain”, although it is still dealing with a separate back ailment.

Stuart says despite the early reservations, the procedure will likely become a lot more popular once it becomes an established part of the veterinary practice.

“As with any new technology, probably the cost factor at the moment would be the major barrier for a lot of people,” he says.

“There’s always ‘early adopters’ who give it a go, but some people want more proof. There’s even some vets that are still sceptical.”

Stuart, who graduated from Massey University’s vet school in Palmerston North in 1982 and has been a vet ever since, says he had seen enough evidence in the first few cases to convince him it was worth being able to offer the treatment in Marlborough.

“That’s one of the rewards that I enjoy so much about vet science - there’s always new treatments, techniques and technology that provides a lot of interest.

“There is a responsibility because, obviously, the [dog’s] owner has invested a significant amount of money in the treatment.

“It’s something new and a little unproven yet, but I have confidence that it was the right thing to do.”

The procedure involves removing a fat sample from behind the shoulder blade of the animal, extracting stem cells from the fat, then injecting those cells into the affected joints. The self-renewable stem cells act as a repair system for the joints.

Scientists have only recently discovered that fat contains a much higher concentration of dormant stem cells than any other body tissue. “[The procedure]’s certainly being refined more, there’s research being done all the time in terms of quantifying how it works and how well it works,” Stuart says.

The Marlborough centre is now working on plans to help with three procedures on Nelson dogs, by receiving the fat cells from vets there, processing them and sending them back.

This will enable the Nelson centre to treat its own dogs without having to purchase the expensive equipment needed for the procedure.

Stuart says using stem cell technology opens up “endless opportunities”, highlighted by cosmetic surgeons in Los Angeles now using the regenerative cells to repair and construct tissue in humans.

“We’re only scratching the surface. It’s very much in its infancy, it’s exciting to be part of that and be involved in the beginning.”

The Council is one of the partners in the district’s Positive Aging Accord, an agreement by all the partner groups and organisations which have a role in creating the best possible quality of life in Marlborough for our older residents.

The Council contributes by providing or supporting services including; A monthly Older Persons Forum where issues of importance to older people can be raised.

Rental housing for the elderly.

Library services including large print books, talking books and a home-bound service. Rebates on

rates based on financial circumstances.

By Celeste Lodewyk The transition from the family home to a retirement home can be a big change in a person’s life, but with a positive attitude and the loving support of your family it can be an easy process, says Ashwood Park Retirement Village residents Lois and Colin McMaster.

Lois and Colin say they feel fortunate to be living in the same retirement home after being married for 59-years.

Colin first moved into Ashwood Park two and a half years ago and was joined last July by Lois.

Although they share separate rooms, they are only a hop skip and a jump from each other and enjoy spending their days together.

“Some people think of a retirement home negatively, as if it is the final phase of their lives but in fact it isn’t, it’s an exciting start to a new stage of your life,” Lois smiles.

Lois recalls when she made the decision to move into Ashwood.

“I had just returned from a six week trip to England and decided to make the transition. I can remember standing outside the entrance and telling myself, I am going to make this work.

“And it has, it has been wonderful, the staff can’t do enough for you and the environment is very

warm and welcoming,” she says.

“We are looked after very well here and the staff care, that’s important,” Colin adds.

One pearl of wisdom Lois and Colin wish to share is the importance of bringing items from the family home.

“We both have a collection of items including pictures and photographs which all have memories attached,” Colin says.

“It’s also a great idea for families to give boxes with useful items such as notepads, stationary, little projects etc which keep you busy. This would help with the transition, it helped us,” Lois adds.

All in all, their conclusion is that; “You get out what you put in. It’s another of life’s many great challenges so grab it with both hands,” they grin.

Wax is ordinarily excreted from your ears naturally, so allow the natural fats and oils in your ear canal to do their job of cleansing the ear of particles. If wax does build up a little olive or almond oil can help to soften the wax and enable it to be discharged. Wax-

softening drops can also be bought from retailers/ pharmacists.

In extreme cases the wax may need to be syringed out by a medical doctor or nurse. A persistent build up of wax in the ears could also be due to an underlying medical condition which an ear specialist/otologist could help diagnose. A medical

practitioner should also be consulted to remove any foreign objects lodged in the ear canal. Ears should also be allowed to dry naturally, with ear plugs an option for those who require protection during extended exposure to water.

String of car crashes Arrest follows danger- Charges likely followous driving ing crash A 17-year-old male labourer was due to appear in Blenheim District Court on Monday following his arrest for d a ngerous d r ivi ng on Budge Street.

Police say they received a complaint from a member of the public regarding the man’s driving late on Tuesday night.

Earlier, a 17-year-old male yardman was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Shortly after, a 26-yearold male shop assistant was arrested for assaulting a woman.

Other arrests on Tuesday included: a 31-year-old male cleaner for breaching his bail conditions, a 17-year-old male pest controller for trespassing; a 19-year-old male vineyard worker for possession of cannabis; and a 49-year-old man for criminal harrassment.

Car crashes through fence, lands on top of vehicle Investigations are continuing into the cause of a crash which saw a utility vehicle crash through a fence and land on top of an abandoned vehicle in Tuamarina on Wednesday morning.

Police say it appears the driver of the utility, a 22-year-old man, hit a parked vehicle when the incident occurred near the Hunters Road and State Highway One intersection.

At 11pm on Thursday, a 50-year-old man and a 51-yearold woman, both with unknown occupation, were arrested for disorderly behaviour on Boyce St. Also on Thursday: A 47-yearold female cleaner was arrested in relation to an historic theft, and an 18-year-old unemployed man was arrested on a warrant for his arrest.

It is alleged the man stole false eyelashes, while the woman fled with make-up.

At 12.50am on Saturday, an 18-year-old male butcher was arrested for consuming cannabis.

Shortly after, a 25-year-old male labourer was arrested for allegedly punching a a 28-yearold man at a licenced premise in Blenheim.

At 3.20am, a 16-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for possession of cannabis and cannabis-smoking utensils, and having a knife in a public place. He has been referred to Youth Aid. At 9am, a 20-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for trespassing and breaching his bail conditions.

Shortly after, a 63-year-old unemployed man was also arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

• Two wild ducks (you will need to talk to your friendly hunter) • 6 peeled and halved shallots • 3 peeled and quartered kiwi fruit (could use lemons) •fresh rosemary •salt and fresh cracked black pepper.

• 1 bottle of your favourite sparkling wine or champagne • 1 bay leaf Rinse and dry the ducks, season with the salt and pepper in the cavities of the ducks.

Stuff the ducks with the shallots, kiwi fruit and rosemary. Place them all in a dish that can be covered, I like to use my dutch oven.

Sprinkle some salt, pepper, rosemary and the bay leaf over the top and pour in the champagne leaving at least enough for a glass for the chef.

Cook covered for an hour in a preheated oven at 180 degrees celsius. Check half way through to make sure it hasn’t dried.

After an hour check to see if it is cooked (juice should run clear). Rest the ducks.

On the stove top reduce the cooking liquor by half. If you’d like the gravy thick you can combine some of the liquor with a tablespoon of corn flour and stir through.

This is lovely served with traditional roast veggies.

“This is a really unique machine which is only limited by your imagination, carving anything from plaques and signs through to 2.5D carvings and lithophanes,” he says.

The CNC machine is computer numerically controlled meaning each design is created using mathematics to communicate the exact dimensions needed for the machine to carve words, pictures and designs.

“This machine is near capable of carving replacement hip joints,” Roger laughs.

Roger retired 18 months ago so that he could focus on learning the machine’s technology and is now ready to offer his unique service to Marlborough through his business arRBee Woodware.

The duo of Kennard and Paddon, from Geraldine, finished third in their first Finnish WRC event last year as part of their Pirelli Star Driver programme.

This year, 24-year-old Paddon aims to at least repeat last year’s performance during the hugely popular rally from July 28 to 30,

Tiger tamed; new breed charges They are calling it a new era.

They – the critics - are saying that because Darren Clarke’s British Open golf victory at Royal St George’s recently was the third time in the last six majors a Northern Irishman has come out on top.

They are also saying that because, more significantly, the victory marked the first time in the history of golf the United States has not provided the winner for six consecutive major tournaments.

The proclamation depends, however, on how you define an ‘era’.

In Tiger Woods’ case, for example, this constitutes 14 major

victories in 15 years since his first in 1997.

So, to add a bit of perspective, this so-called ‘new era’ has been in existence for all of about three years – the time since Tiger won his last major.

But there is no doubt the face of golf is changing. It has been changing steadily since the great Tiger was tamed by revelations of adultery, subsequent loss of form and, now, injuries.

The last 12 majors have been won by 12 different golfers, one of them a striking youngster with curly hair from Northern Ireland.

However you define it, the shift in dominance is good for the game. No, make that imperative.

Q – “Religion is the scourge of the earth. You should keep your Bible Answers inside your church for the blind people who believe them.” (Matt N – Email) A – Not really a question here, but several things worth looking at more closely…

Is religion really THE scourge of the earth? No. Religion is a straw dummy that hides the REAL scourge of the earth which is SIN found in our own wicked hearts. Jeremiah 17:9 says that, “The heart is deceitful ABOVE ALL THINGS, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Pride, selfishness, hate, envy, greed, lust, malice – these are the things found in the heart of men that are THE real scourge of the earth.

The problem however is that religion embodies most of these things! For every good work done in the name of some god, anyone with common sense can see that religion is behind most of the world’s wars and has brought untold poverty and misery to countless millions. How can this be?

God has put within each of us a knowledge that he exists (Rom 1:19-20; 2:15) – men have three options in response to the reality of God’s existence and their failures (that pride, hate and selfishness!) before him: 1) Reject him and go off and do as they please – atheism, evolution and anti-religion!

2) Cover this uncomfortable feeling by trying to appease God on their own terms: religion!

3) Submit to a holy God and obey him just as his Word commands – Bible believing Christianity!

The SINGLE GREATEST MISCONCEPTION that exists in New Zealand today is the utter, complete and total failure of the average Kiwi to understand the difference between the 2nd and 3rd options just stated. If you actually understood what I just said, you are in the extreme minority: Congratulations!

As post-modern New Zealand takes an increasingly anti-god stance, religion (which can’t help you) and its opposite extreme of Bible-believing Christianity (which can help you) are lumped into the same basket – an unfair comparison born out of ignorance in a population who generally know nothing of the Bible or world history. This little column has taken heaps of heat in the past three months for merely pointing out this simple difference – notice all the disclaimers above and below that we have no choice but to wear these days.

If you hate God and want to do your own thing – that’s your right – go for it! Please know however that as long as we live in a free country we will continue to exercise our freedoms and warn you about the folly of your way – so Matt, we won’t be hiding our Bible answers in church. But before you get too excited, it might be worth the effort to actually consider the possibility that the RELIGION you are so upset about is as different from a BIBLE ANSWER as chalk and cheese.

Royals put Blenheim company in spotlight

By Celeste Lodewyk A bee venom beauty product which has been reportedly used by royal bride Kate Middleton and several celebrities has cast an international spotlight on Blenheim company, The Honey Collection.

Owned by Nick Coombe, The Honey Collection on Grove Road has been working closely with Nelson Honey, the company whose bee venom product has been used

by English beautician Deborah Mitchell on her famous clients.

She later recommended it to Kate Middleton prior to her wedding.

Following the royal hype, Nelson Honey worked with The Honey Collection to design their own version of the bee venom face mask cream, Royal Nectar.

“Royal Nectar has been in hot demand since television stations here and from Australia ran stories on it recently so we thought it would be nice to mention Blenheim’s involvement,” says The Honey Collection manager Georgia Devlin (pictured).

Now The Honey Collection is preparing to release its own cream called Natural Beetox.

“No one until now knows we have made this product so we are really excited for its release in the coming weeks, in a way Blenheim will have its own touch of royalty,” she says.

What is special about the bee venom face mask cream is its use as a natural alternative to botox.

“It plumps us the skin and pushes out the wrinkles, great for filling out your skin and making you look more youthful,” Georgia says.

By Damian George Blen hei m swi mmer Nick Kerry has scooped a remarkable ten medals and helped the Blenheim Swim Club to fifth place out of 63 teams at the New Zealand Division II Swim Championships, held in Rotorua last week.

T h e 16 -ye a r- old Nick Kerry claimed four gold medals, two silver and two bronze as he contributed half of the club’s 20 medals at the annual event.

Kerry clinched gold in the 200m fly, 400m individual medley, 200m breaststroke and 100m fly, and snatched silver in the 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke.

Two further golds were achieved through 16-year-old Rachel Clark, in the 50m backstroke, and 13-year-old Toby Lloyd, in the 200m freestyle.

Clark also gained silver in the 100m backstroke, while Lloyd took home silver in the 200m fly and pocketed four bronze medals.

Sally McNath took home a silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 50m fly, and achieved six personal best times.

Kieran Raemaki also achieved several personal best times at the meet.

Both Kerry and Lloyd qualified for the NZ Short Course Championships in Wellington from August 5-8, which they will be competing in alongside fellow club member and national breaststroke champion Sara Gene (13).
