Pupil gets top award By Damian George Riverlands School student Kimberley Fuller has become one of the first recipients of the Sir Peter Blake Trust Young Leaders Award. The 12-year-old, a year eight student at Riverlands, was presented with the prestigious award by Westpac Blenheim branch bank manager Karen Firth at a school assembly yesterday. “It’s a huge surprise, I had no idea I was getting it but I’m really happy,” Kimberley told The Sun yesterday. The award, given to only a select few intermediate students throughout the country, recognises outstanding leadership among young New Zealanders. It is the first year it has been extended to the younger age group, having been previously awarded only to secondary students. Riverlands School principal Dave Parsons says Kimberley has demonstrated huge leadership qualities for a long time. “She’s not just doing things for the adults in the school, she has shown initiative in developing school culture and accepting responsibility,” he says. “In our school, we rely heavily on these sorts of students stepping up and taking that leadership role.” In her time at Riverlands, Kimberley has joined several school projects and initiatives, including the TAB [Tomorrow and Beyond] environmental group, and is a ‘house’ leader and school librarian. Kimberley’s parents, Trish and Grant, say their daughter is “just one of those kids” who loves to be involved. “She just does everything that’s going, she puts her hand up for everything.” The awards were given out as part of Leadership Week. Leadership Day is on Friday.

RWC Roadshow to hit Blenheim next week Nelson Mail
Tuesday, July 19, 2011
By Damian George The Rugby World Cup 2011 Roadshow is set to hit Blenheim on Tuesday, with the hunt on for a local sous chef to feature on TVNZ’s Breakfast show as part of the celebrations. A competition is being run by Wine Marlborough to select the chef, who will assist two chefs from Blenheim’s Hotel d’Urville in cooking a breakfast during live filming of the show at the Marlborough Convention Centre. The meal will be served to TVNZ’s roving reporter Tamati Coffey. Hotel d’Urville executive chef Maree Connolly says the occasion will provide an opportunity for local people to get involved in the hype of the tournament. “I think it’s going to be great, it’s going to be huge for Marlborough. “For a lot of people, the Rugby World Cup is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” The winner of the competition will also win a prize pack worth more than $600. It includes two tickets to the Marlborough Wine and Cuisine REAL Festival New Zealand event on October 6 [another World Cup event], two Interislander tickets, festival merchandise, a $50 Wither Hills voucher, and two food hampers. The locally-themed breakfast will include a range of regional seafood including smoked Marlborough Regal Salmon and Cloudy Bay Clams, Potato Rostis, and Brancott Estate wine. The RWC 2011 Roadshow will visit 27 towns across New Zealand throughout July, and kicked off in Bluff on Monday. The roadshow will be touring in a custom-designed truck housing the Webb Ellis Cup. The truck opens out into a 72-squaremetre events centre with interactive

Rugby New Zealand 2011 Chief Executive Martin Snedden says the roadshow will create a real buzz in New Zealand communities. “The RWC 2011 Roadshow will help show New Zealanders why this tournament is so much bigger than just the rugby,” he says. “It’s going to be a lot of fun so I urge people to come along and get a taste of how special this event is going to be and how they can play a part.” Maree says the sous chef will be selected randomly, by the end of the week.

Above average temperatures forecast Marlborough is expected to enjoy “above average” temperatures over the next three months, the Niwa National Climate Centre says. The weather forecaster issued its seasonal climate outlook for the ‘late winter’ period from July to September last Thursday. NIWA scientist Dr Brett Mullan says there is a 50 per cent chance Blenheim’s average temperature over the three-month period will be above the normal range of 8.6-8.9C. Temperatures should increase over the three months, so the forecast should most closely represent August figures, he says. Dr Mullan says seasonal rainfall is expected to be near normal for the region. Blenheim’s average late winter rainfall is 173-227mm.

Airport name change logical, says Sowman By Damian George The Marlborough region will capatalise on a marketing brand “no other region can match” when it changes the name of Blenheim Airport to Marlborough Airport, Blenheim, Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says. Marlborough Airport Ltd, a council-owned subsidiary, announced plans to update the airport’s signage following its airport management review last week. “We’re updating the brand and there’s no doubt that the Marlborough brand carries a cachet that no other region can match,” Mr Sowman says. “But there’s also a certain logic - we’re a regional airport
and Marlborough is the name of our region.” Mr Sowman says there has always been confusion regarding the airport’s location because of the use of the name Woodbourne. “Destination Marlborough has been promoting the region as one destination and there’s high recognition of the name,” he says. He says Destination Marlborough had reported feedback from tourists who recognise Marlborough as a destination, but were not sure where Blenheim was. Another change to come out of the review is the relocation of the airport company’s office into the terminal. Mr Sowman says this will give the company a higher profile,
both to tenants and to people using the terminal. MDC support services manager Dean Heiford says having new signage in place in time for Rugby World Cup 2011 was a factor in the decision. “I can’t say it wasn’t taken into consideration, but I’ve been talking with Destination Marlborough about it for a long time and they’ve been pushing to have the name changed.” Mr Heiford says he is unsure when the new signs will be in place, but hopes to have them up as soon as possible. Telephone numbers and email addresses for the airport will remain the same. The postal address is now PO Box 1101, Blenheim 7240.

By Damian George Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says the average rates increase for the region of 3.19 per cent is as low as it could have been without undermining public services. The Marlborough District Council confirmed the rate when it formally adopted its 2011-12 annual plan at a meeting last Thursday. “I guess what we looked at when we set the rates was ‘is it at the expense of services?’” Mr Sowman said in the meeting. “I believe we achieved a rate...which is as low as possible while still maintaining the
level of service to the people of Marlborough.” Mr Sowman says the increase was always going to spark debate, but the rates process this year had been very stringent. “The councillors will acknowledge it’s probably one of the most robust that we’ve been through.” He says factors such as rising insurance premiums and fuel costs had put pressure on the council’s budget. “Councillors appreciate we are still in difficult economic times and we must hold the line on costs but we have also acknowledged our responsibility to invest a
Survey to increase hall usage By Damian George The Tuamarina-Waikakaho Residents Association says a community survey currently being finalised will look at ways to increase the usage of the community’s Memorial Hall. Association chairman Pat O’Sullivan told The Sun yesterday the survey is not aimed at gauging opinion on the proposed shifting of the hall from its current site to Tuamarina School, as had been reported in the media. “The school’s moved on, the council’s moved on,” Mr O’Sullivan says of the proposed relocation. “This survey’s aimed at understanding the demographics of the district and the needs of the community in relation to the hall.” Tuamarina School had proposed to shift the hall onto its grounds in order to prevent its students from crossing State Highway 1 to access it. However, it has since decided not to pursue the change. Mr O’Sullivan says the hall is presently being used for just one dance and a few meetings per month, and wants to enocurage wider use. “The survey will help us gain information so we’re better able to manage and utilise the hall,” he says. “If we can increase the usage by 20-30 users per

KEEPING WARM: Five-month-old Tom Walker gets cosy beneath a merino wrap made by Snug as a Bug, a Marlborough Plunket initiative. KNITTED: This blanket and singlet are examples of what Marlborough Plunket aims to give all babies next winter with the community’s help. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk
Snug as a bug By Celeste Lodewyk Five years ago Plunket nurses found that there were many babies in Renwick using most of their energy keeping warm rather than growing, so it has been an ongoing goal of Marlborough Plunket to provide woollen singlets and blankets to babies that need them most. This was when ‘Snug as a Bug’ was born and through it many local families have benefited, says Renwick Plunket committee president Jennifer Potts.
“Initially the blankets and singlets were given to babies at risk of not growing due to not keeping warm enough, but now we are aiming to give them out to all babies born next winter.” There were around 400 babies born during winter last year she says, so this year Marlborough Plunket is working hard to get enough blankets and singlets for next year. “At the moment we have five knitters who have been doing a fantastic job who have made more
than previous years, so in order to make even more for next year we are appealing to the community for help and donations of wool,” she says. A great example of support shown toward Snug as a Bug was the donation of a roll of merino fabric from Levana Textiles in Levin, which has been cut and sewn into individual baby wraps. If you would like to help Snug as a Bug by knitting or donating wool, call Central Plunket in Blenheim.
Sloan a ‘champion’ Marlborough district councillor Terry Sloan has been handed the advocacy for the Blenheim central business district (CBD) plans, a vision for the future, by Mayor Alistair Sowman. A report was led by urban design specialist Urbanism Plus, and included public workshops and consultation. The strategy has now received council funding of $500,000 to begin its implementation. Mr Sowman says Cr Sloan will be the ‘champion’ for this strategy. Some people close to the council
may have seen this appointment as a slap on the hand for councillor Jessica Bagge, as she currently holds the CBD portfolio. Cr Bagge has already shown she is prepared to strongly debate topics like the Civic Theatre in council. However, Cr Bagge told The Sun she was totally supportive of Cr Sloan’s appointment and believed the CBD would be better off with two voices in council. The Urbanism Plus plan was only Terry Sloan one small part of the CBD portfolio, Cr Bagge says.

Hairdressing champs brought to Blenheim
By Damian George The popular Nelson and Marlborough regional hairdressing competition is being brought to Blenheim for the first time in its 18-year history. The annual event, run by the Nelson Marlborough Regional Association of Hairdressers, has been staged in Nelson every year since the two associations merged in 1993. Association vice-president Rochelle Stevenson says she lobbied hard for a change of venue after deciding it was time to bring the competition south. “We’re bringing quite a big fashion event to Marlborough,” she says. “It’s gonna be fresh, it’s gonna be W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o ! new and it’s gonna be alive.” Rochelle says the event, which will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough on August 7, is a light-hearted and fun affair.

Clara wins Smokefreerockquest By Celeste Lodewyk Two we ek s ago t he Su n previewed Blenheim teenager and rising musician Clara van Wel, highlighting her climb toward musical stardom, but on Saturday night she rose even higher. Clara won first place at the 2011 Smokefreerockquest regional final at the Convention Centre, wowing judges with two of her original songs ‘Living a Life’ and ‘Closer’. Clara also won the Smokefree Award for Women’s Musicianship. For the 13-year old, this was her first appearance on a Smokefree rockquest stage, and when her name was called out as the final’s winner, Clara says she was left feeling “stunned” and slightly emotional. “I didn’t think I had a chance at winning, the talent was so high and many of them were bands which had a lot more involved in their performances, but I am really happy to have won,” she says.
The top two place-getters win musical gear from NZ Rockshops and go on to compete for one of six national finalist spots in this year’s Smokefreerockquest. Rockquest Promotions Founders and Directors Glenn Common and Pete Rainey said from here on the Marlborough finalists would have to work hard and draw on their creativity to make the most of the opportunity Smokefreerockquest offered. “The bands to play off at the national final in September are chosen from DVDs of their own music.” Second place went to Down to Funk, made up of Chris Swan, Thornton Church and Corban Church from Marlborough Boys’ College and Robert Riach from Queen Charlotte College. Down to Funk won the Lowdown Best Song Award, Lee Stuart won the People’s Choice Award and Chris Swan won the Mainz Musicianship Award.

Re: Queen Charlotte Drive Dear Ed, I feel that I must write in response to your correspondent’s letter in the Wednesday, June 29 edition. I am not sure how often “Concerned User” uses Queen Charlotte Drive. Marlborough Roads and their contractors are almost a permanent feature of the road these days. Slips occur frequently (the road has been closed 3 times in the past month or so), and the road near the Grove is reduced to less than one lane due to several areas of subsidence. These slips are attended to without delay, and the road usually reopens within the day. To my knowledge, the ditches have been
cleared twice in the last 6 months, and drainage work is an ongoing issue. Set this against the fact that Marlborough Roads is to claim $5.2 million from NZTA to help to fix flooding damage to roads in the last year, of which $900,000 was due to storm events in May and June alone. I a m mor e conc er ne d t hat Marlborough Roads continues to maintain the road as a vital link to Sounds communities, rather than mow the verges to impress the tourists. That can come later, if it stops raining. Yours sincerely, John Aldridge

Dear Ed, In response to the article ‘Cat traps to stay under wraps’, published June 29: I read with disbelief the article in your recent edition regarding the cat traps that the SPCA are going to be using for the trapping of wild cats. I had to re-read the article several times to make sure that the statement of Jess Monk was as printed - that, after de-sexing and health checking, feral cats would be released back into the wild. We as a region and a country do not need or want more feral cats - breeding or not - killing our native wildlife. This is taking animal care to the extreme. The SPCA, along with the rest of New Zealand, has a moral obligation to preserve and protect our native fauna from predation. While I understand it is the SPCA’s
mission to save animals, do they not consider the amount of damage feral cats do? When cats get stuck into our native fauna, they are neither selective or humane in the way they kill. They will kill and maim more than they can eat. I understand it is heartbreaking to put down otherwise healthy animals. But what is the alternative? Plenty of feral cats (de-sexed or not) and little or no native fauna. If wild dogs were a problem, would the SPCA de-sex them and return them to the wild? And, yes, my family are the owners of two cats who are well-fed, wear collars with bells and are kept in at night. SPCA, please re-think this policy and think about the damage these cats will do on release. Richard Hawes Picton

Harold’s visit delights Linkwater students
Paul and Daphne Radmall are keen members of the Marlborough Poultry Pigeon and Cage Bird Association and are looking forward to Blenheim’s annual Poultry Show on July 8 and 9. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.
FRIENDLY VISIT: Harold the Life Education Trust Giraffe gave out Just Juice drinks to the children of Linkwater School last week and the children were so excited by Harold’s visit that they sent in this photograph to The Sun.
Shake a tail feather Annual Poultry Show opens this weekend By Celeste Lodewyk As organisers gear up for the Marlborough Poultry Pigeon and Cage Bird Association’s annual Poultry Show, The Sun visited committee members Paul and Daphne Radmall to discuss the benefits of owning a flock of chickens. The couple came from the UK nearly five years ago to purchase their St Leonards Vineyard Cottages business and, with it, they inherited a number of chickens. At the time they had no idea about looking after them so they went along to one of Marlborough’s Poultry Shows to seek advice. “The members were very welcoming and gave us a lot of information and support. We had no previous experience with chickens so it was a steep learning curve for us, but a pleasant one,” Paul says. After being asked to put his electrician and mechanical skills to use in restoring an incubator bed, Paul decided to join the association. Although he won’t be displaying his own chooks at this year’s show, he and
Daphne will still be around to talk to anyone wanting to know more about owning chickens. “We never thought we would ever own chickens, but now we would recommend it to anyone,” he says. Paul and Daphne have 30 chickens, mainly Wyandottes and a number of Shavers. Recently, they also purchased some Araucanas, which Daphne says produce the most “beautiful” pale blue-coloured eggs. “Because we run an accommodation business, it’s nice that we can provide guests with fresh, free range eggs. “Plus, guests, including children, really enjoy feeding the chickens and collecting eggs. They are definitely fascinating creatures.” This year will be the 124th annual Poultry Show and will be held on July 8 and 9 at the Riding for Disabled Arena on Taylor Pass Road. It will be open on Friday from 2pm6pm and on Saturday from 10am3.30pm. It is open to the public.

A hunting life For keen hunter Tony Orman, who releases his 24th book in August, hunting is not about killing, as Damian George finds out.
Avid hunter Tony Orman can spend hours in Marlborough’s mountains tracking and photographing wild animals, but don’t expect him to come back with anything. The prolific author is due to release his 24th book, A Hunting Life, in August, and it is aimed at setting right what he says is a common misconception about the purpose of hunting. “Too many books in recent years have been based around killing animals; that’s not what hunting is about,” he says. “It’s about the total experience. It’s just all about being there, and being up in the mountains. It goes far beyond killing an animal.”
A qualified land surveyor, Tony Tony, who learnt the art of hunting from his father while growing up moved to Blenheim in 1969 to be in Manawatu, says he often heads the Marlborough County Council’s out equipped with his camera, as town planner, and completed the council’s first district planning opposed to his rifle. “At the end of the day, how many scheme. Planning a function or event
Winter meetings at Brancott Estate Winery Taking delegates away from their daily work environment has many benefits including avoiding the interruption of daily office activities, space to focus on the agenda and it should help foster good, open communication. Brancott Estate Winery provides the ideal private space for effective conferencing. The Brancott Lounge has a welcoming environment for meetings, with comfort-
able furnishings and open fire. Brancott Theatre, with space for 200 delegates, provides an excellent option for product displays while several smaller rooms are available for break-out space. And for those who are looking for a company dinner, you have the choice of the Barrel Hall or private use of the Brancott Estate Winery Restaurant. The Restaurant is renowned for
serving excellent cuisine and Chef Julie Robinson ensures you appreciate her culinary skills from the fresh cakes and biscuits served at tea breaks to a delicious lunch menu. A special Brancott Winter Conference Package of $49.00 per person is currently on offer until 30 August 2011 and a complimentary arrival tea and coffee is served to help you start your day in a good, productive way.
Cruise with us It is not difficult to plan a private function or conference when you have the assistance of the crew from Havelock’s BBQ Cat Cruises. BBQ Cat Cruises provide the ideal setting for any occasion, whether you are planning a birthday, anniversary, work or social function or simply want a casual sunny afternoon out with family and friends. What makes BBQ Cat Cruises unique is the relaxed and “undisturbed” atmosphere as you cruise through the Pelorus and Kenepuru sounds at a leisurely pace, a great way for you to take in the sights and take some great photos. What is more, each cruise is 100 percent tailored to suit what you want, including food, f lexible cruise times, transport to and from the BBQ Cat boat, music and table settings. With a maximum capacity of 40 people onboard, there is plenty of space for small, intimate weddings, conferences, parties and private groups. While you enjoy the
cruise, crew Sandra and skipper Alan take care of the food preparations and can cook a delicious BBQ with the freshest and tastiest ingredients. There are two toilets onboard, covered and uncovered areas and even a disco light for those who really want to let their hair down, making BBQ Cat Cruises the ideal way to celebrate any occasion. For more information contact Sandra on 027 248 0583 or 027 522 7228, or alternatively email them through their website – www.bbqcat. com

The items have been received by Blenheim Police Senior Constable Russ Smith and will be
delivered free of charge by TNL Freighting to Senior Sergeant Roy Appley from New Brighton Police Station who will in turn distribute them amongst the community. According to Federation President Maureen O’Connell, there is a huge need for warm clothing and blankets in New Brighton. “We were told this was one area in desperate need of hats, scarves, blankets and children’s woollen clothing, especially now it is winter and many still do not have heating in their homes,” she says.

Outside chance for some backs It is not an unusual situation for an All Blacks selection panel to be in - deciding which of a raft of outside back options does not make the cut. Assuming Graham Henry and his offsiders opt for five outside backs when they announce their first All Blacks squad of the year next week, there are quite possibly three different sets of wingers he could choose. In World Cup year, Henry has stated he wants to stick with the tried and trusted, a welcome relief for All Blacks followers who have witnessed some baffling selections in four-yearly cycles. But just who is deemed ‘experienced’? Joe Rokocoko,
with 68 tests and 46 tries to his name, certainly is. But he is far away New Zealand’s most seasoned winger. He is followed by fellow Fijian flyer Sitiveni Sivivatu, who has chalked up a surprising 43 test matches since his debut in 2005. On experience, these two wingers would be joined by Wellington’s Cory Jane, with 22 tests, but this trio is unlikely. Rokocoko, though reliable, is not as clinical a finisher as he was, Sivivatu has been hampered by injuries, and Jane has been out of sorts. It is possible none of those three will make the squad. On form, the Crusaders pair

of Zac Guildford - the best New Zealand winger in the competition - and Sean Maitland certainly would. They could be joined by Hosea Gear, though he too has not found his best form this year, and this trio would carry alarmingly low test experience. Other names to throw into the hat include Rene Ranger, Lelia Masaga, and the injured pair of Isaia Toeava and Israel Dagg, who has played on the wing for the All Blacks. Could the three wingers come from this group, bearing in mind Jane can also play fullback? It will, as ever, be fascinating to see which way the selectors go.

Marlborough stalwart Wellington-bound By Damian George Local stalwart Betty Batty will leave the sun of Marlborough for the wind of Wellington on Monday, nearly 70 years after she moved to the region from Nelson. Betty, who moved to Blenheim with her first husband Harry at the end of the second World War, is set to leave for the capital to live with her daughter because of diminishing eye sight. “I’ve lived here for a long time. It is a little bit sad because I’d made a lot of friends here,” Betty says. “But the time has come.” The 85-year-old has been an everpresent figure in the Marlborough community and only stood down from her role on the Blind Foundation last year. She currently is unable to see out of one eye, and has just 30 percent vision in the other. “I had an operation which regained a little bit of my sight, so I decided to put something back into it,” Betty says. Her work with the foundation, where she was heavily involved with its social committee, is far from the only community service she has put her efforts into. Her first venture into the volunteer world was on the Seymour Street Kindergarten committee, where she was president for two years.
She then joined the St John Nursery Division and became a girl guide at the age of 40. With both Harry, who she was married to for 35 years, and late second husband Doug [1981-2004], involved with the Marlborough RSA, Betty decided to join the Women’s Section in 1981. She later became vice-president and received a Long Service Certificate, but it was for other reasons she became better known. “I worked, which wasn’t the regular thing,” she says. “My life was a little bit different to some of them.” Betty was one of the original workers at Innes House - the former Marlborough Girls’ College boarding house - cooked at the former Bursill Rest Home [now Aberleigh Rest Home] and ran the cafeteria at Lane Walker Rudkin Marlborough Lingerie. In 1980, she founded PALS [Parents Alone and Lonely Singles] to help local women get out into the community. “I think I realised being a widow, there were a lot of people out there who needed a group of people to go out with. It was hard for women to go out on their own back then.” Betty also joined the Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau in 1979. During her time in Marlborough,
Bon voyage: Prominent community figure Betty Batty is farewelled with an afternoon tea on Monday. Betty is moving to Wellington after nearly 70 years in Blenheim.
Betty has raised six children, and welcomed 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
She says it will be hard to leave her home. “It’s just that I’ve been here off
and on for 65 years, and brought my family up here, and I’ve got to know a lot of different people.”
