Everyone gets The Sun Total market coverage in Marlborough

By Damian George The Electricity Authority is urging Marlburians to shop around to ensure they are receiving the best possible power deals as winter officially begins today. The electricity watchdog launched a new campaign recently entitled What’s My Number, which it says could save New Zealand households a total of $240 million a year. The campaign was launched in conjunction with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Consumer NZ. Electricity Authority chief executive Carl Hansen says it is now much easier for consumers to switch electricity providers, and people should be frequently shopping for the best deal. “The average time taken to switch retailers used to be 200 days when the mass retail market started in the late 1990s,” he says. “We’ve done a lot of work to bring down these switching times - they’ve now dropped to around four days on average, so it’s a massive difference from what was there before.” Mr Hansen says people can quickly and easily compare and change retailers by visiting the www.whatsmynumber.org.nz website. “Our research shows that, at any given time, only about five percent of consumers are actively looking at switching retailers,” he says. “We don’t expect people to be out shopping every week, but we want people to take control of their electricity bill and develop a ‘shopping around’ attitude.” Mr Hansen says if people were to switch retailers more frequently, it would enhance competition and benefit everyone. The government released a $15 million fund over a three-year period in November last year to promote to consumers the benefits of comparing and switching retailers.

Defibrillator on site New World South Island has invested over $130,000 in purchasing 37 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for each of its supermarkets. Kent Mahon, New World South Island Group Manager, said that the machines are an investment to support the South Island community. “More than 1000 people go into cardiac arrest out of hospital in New Zealand every year, and only 8% survive currently. Using a defibrillator early can increase the chance of survival from 8% to up to 40% in sudden cardiac arrest cases,” he said. As part of the purchase of

the AEDs, several New World staff in each store have received training on how to operate the machines. “St John, who supplied the units, have told us that if someone goes into sudden cardiac arrest, immediately dialling 111 and performing CPR is essential, but it’s not always enough to ensure they survive. Patients also need to receive a safe electric shock from a defibrillator to ‘restart’ the heart. We now have such a unit beside Customer Services in all our New World supermarkets in the South Island,” he said. Julian Price, St John Training

We have the key to your

dream home

Services Manager, said that New World has made a great decision to have this life-saving piece of equipment available in all their South Island stores. “Cardiac arrest can strike anyone – any gender, all ages and occupations regardless of weight or fitness level. “The good thing about the defibrillators is that they are easy to use but effective. When the defibrillator is switched on, the user simply follows the clear audio and visual prompts that guide them step-by-step through the few simple actions required. And they do save lives.”

By Damian George Telecommunications provider Telecom erected a 25-metre high cellphone tower in Renwick on the weekend, much to the dismay of one Renwick businessman. Watson’s Way Lodge owner Paul Watson says he is worried the tower will deter guests from staying at his business, as some people are opposed to such equipment due to radiation emission. More than that, though, Mr Watson is angered neither Telecom nor the Marlborough District Council did not keep the public informed of the plan to erect the tower. Telecom and the council signed an agreement in 1998 allowing Telecom to use the land, behind the post shop building in Renwick, to install telecommnications equipment. “It was a bit upsetting. I think the council tried to slip it under the radar and get everything there before anybody noticed,” Mr Watson, a former Renwick Residents’ Association member, says. “If you take it a step further, they could put up satellite dishes and God knows what up here. “We have quite a few thousand guests come through and we don’t want to jeopardise that at all. I think council were very lax in keeping in touch with the ratepayers.” Marlborough District Council regulatory manager Hans Versteegh says Telecom did not need to notify residents of the application to install the tower, as plans to install any equipment were agreed upon when the consent was given.

Call for volunteers By Damian George IDEA Services Blenheim is calling for more people to join its volunteer programme as many of its members wait to be paired up with willing locals. The nationwide programme is designed to match up people with intellectual disabilities with community members who share similar interests. Volunteer coordinator for IHC Marlborough Joycelyn Robinson says the organisation could use at least another dozen volunteers to get all its members paired up and out into the community. “We currently have 23 active volunteers, but we have a waiting list of about 12 people with an intellectual disability who have requested a volunteer,” she says. The programme involves IDEA members and their partners engaging in weekly activities within the community. That can be anything from cycling to playing musical instruments, cooking, or just having a coffee, Mrs Robinson says. “It’s a programme that makes a sig-

nificant difference to people with intellectual disabilities, but it also makes a difference to the people who volunteer and become friends with them,” she says. “It sort of makes all those links and people get to know that people with anintellectual disability want to live fulfilling lives like you and I, but often don’t have the same opportunities to make friends.” Mrs Robinson says most of the people currently on the waiting list are young men who want to partake in standard pastimes such as playing pool. Volunteer Sylvia Gregory, who has been with the programme for two-anda-half years, says she thoroughly enjoys spending time with her IDEA member Debbie Cox. “I think it’s because Debbie’s such an honest person...she is as she is, and we just have a lot of fun together,” she says. “We really laugh and do all sorts of silly things.” “I think they’ll get a hell of a lot out of it.

Pleasant surroundings and spacious living make Redwood a lovely place to live

On June 1, 2006 Sun columnist Ken Berry died aged 81. Five years later to the day Ken is very much in our thoughts. Ken was always one to stretch the boundaries, and he regularly did this in his columns. He aptly described his own life as one of “tenderness, introspection, foolhardiness and passion”. The neglected slum child from the East End of London won his way to a fine education at a “good” (if not particularly kind) school. One of the few to survive wartime service as an RAF rear gunner, he then became an accountant. However, Ken threw away his profession and his family life as the lifelong lure of the turf and a love of whisky both tightened their grip. Ken wrote several books about his life experiences and also ‘Mutiny on the County’, the organisation’s official history. Unforgettably, he wrote outspoken weekly columns for the Sun. Highly literate, Ken wrote with passion for this area and an amused contempt for hypocrisy and foolishness. He also wrote with vast experience of life and of people. Many of his columns have survived the test of time.

The Russians are coming A campaign designed to “woo” the Russian rugby team during Rugby World Cup 2011 was announced today by Destination Marlborough, 100 days out from the start of the tournament. “To Russia with Love Marlborough” will be a campaign based on a “twist of James Bond mixed with local branding”, regional RWC project manager Susan Witehira says. The Russian team will be based in Marlborough from September 6-13 and again from September 16-18. Mrs Witehira says the campaign is designed to promote a Russian flavour throughout the region while the Russian side is here. “We’re adopting the Russians as our second team, so it would fantastic if we could get everyone to swing their support behind our visitors and make them feel very welcome,” she says. Central to the campaign will be free Russian language lessons for the public, offered at various locations from August 15 to September 5, Mrs Witehira says. She says these will provide an opportunity for people to learn the basics, a little about Russian way of life and sample some local Russian products. “We don’t know how many Russian rugby supporters we’ll see here but we’d love Marlburians to be able to speak at least a couple of words of Russian by the time the team arrives in town.

“ T h e r e ’s nothing more welcom ing t ha n hea ring someone greet you in you r ow n language, no mat ter t he quality of the pronunciation.” Russian-born singer The Omaka Yulia Aviation Heritage Centre will have its own special tribute to mark the occasion - a new exhibit featuring a full-size replica of an early Morane monoplane as flown by Russian Ace Alexander Kozakov. Various other commemorative aircraft, as well as flying displays, will also be on show. Russian-born singer Yulia, winner of the 2010 European Song Competition, will be performing at Allan Scott Family Winemakers Twelve Trees Restaurant on September 16 and 17. Other events include a competition for the best Russian-themed shop window display, while Mrs Witehira is also urging bars, pubs, restaurants and social clubs to stage Russianthemed events. The Russian team will arrive in Blenheim on September 6.

Le f t to right: Mitch and Cam Alderlieste hold their puppies Missy and Stella, who were found abandoned in a cardboard box eight weeks ago.

“To be honest, when I first took her, I was hesitant ‘cause I really thought she was going to die. “It was just awful. Puppies at that age should be charging round and playing. It was really, really hard.” Unfortunately, the news was not so good for the puppies’ little brother, who died of starvation having not been rescued in time. Cheryl says she and her three children Mitch [14], Cam [12] and Ethan [9] all took great pride in looking after the animals and restoring them to full health. The puppies attended an SPCA sale day last weekend in an effort to find them a new home, with SPCA staff amazed at the recovery. “It’s just awesome. They were just amazed at how far they’ve come, they couldn’t believe they were the same dogs,” she says. “The puppies are desperately ready for a new home. We would keep them if we could, but we can’t. “There’s not enough room, and it’s expensive.” Cheryl says she hopes the puppies will be picked up by another family who will provide the same level of care they have.

Recovered puppies ready for new home By Damian George After being abandoned by their owner and left to die, two scared, gravely ill puppies are now well enough to fend for themsleves and ready to be adopted by a local family. The puppies, now named Missy and Stella, have completed their journey to full health thanks to the hard work of a local family who fostered the animals eight weeks ago. The Alderlieste family, of Fairhall, answered a call from the Marlborough RSPCA after the puppies were found abandoned on the side of the road in a cardboard box. “The SPCA contacted us and said ‘we’ve got two puppies and three kittens’. We said we would take them all,” Cheryl Alderlieste says. “We have animals - we have four cats and two dogs of our own - so we were happy to help.” Cheryl says the puppies were in “terrible” shape when the family agreed to foster them, with Missy particularly unwell. “Stella had a little bit more life to her than Missy. Missy would just lay there and sit there staring,” Cheryl says.

By Celeste Lodewyk There were many inspirational messages and support shown for Blenheim Heart Children on Saturday, as friends, family and members of the public plunged into icy spa pools in an effort to fundraise for Blenheim@Heart. The Heart Stopper Challenge was a huge success says organiser Bronwyn Cooke, with 22 teams sporting crazy costumes spending five minutes in the freezing water while the large crowd shouted out support. For Blenheim parents Fiona Lammas and Scott Duncan, Saturday’s event was particularly special to them as they had recently returned from Auckland’s Starship Hospital with their son Charlie. Ten month old Charlie was the inspiration for the Heart Stopper team “Charlie’s

Angels”, which managed to raise an incredible $2,477 online in time for the event. Charlie was found to have a heart murmur at six weeks of age and after scans he was diagnosed with a 1cm Ventricular Septal Defect. This meant his heart was pumping too much oxygenated blood back into the lungs and was working too hard to get enough oxygenated blood into the body. Because of his condition, Charlie tired easily and was easily susceptible to catching illnesses. Charlie had his surgery on May 18, he has recovered well and was able to be at Saturday’s event with his family and supporters. “Feeling his hearts struggling beat with

every cuddle and waiting for the surgery was tough and emotionally tiring for us. “Venturing into the unknown once we arrived at Starship Hospital was just downright scary, but we are happy to be home and Charlie is recovering really well and we are grateful to all of our supporters,” Fiona says. Both Fiona and Charlie had the honour of releasing white balloons to mark the beginning of the challenge. $9511.00 is the amount raised by Blenheim to date.

I’m not sure how it’s going to be policed really. But something needs to be done to stop them polluting the Environment. Some are definitely spoiling it for others.

Leave the place as they found it. Or take a shovel. Fines are worth it to keep New Zealand nice, clean and green.

There are the good people that abide the rules, yet the bad just seem to spoil it for the others. So they deserve to be fined. We need to keep New Zealand beautiful.

I’m not seeing any less on my travels to and from Picton. They still appear to be stopping on the Foreshore. But they need to understand to take their mess with them.

I’ve seen what they do to the Kaikoura Coast. It only takes a little to make a mess - toilet paper etc. Maybe campers with toilets are the best way to control it.

They need to take the rubbish with them - why should we clean up their mess? Fines are the best way. But my problem with that is how will the law find who did it?

Your personality

Price of fish Dear Ed, I saw blue cod in the supermarket at $47 a kg. Why is it so high? Commercial fishermen? Middle men? Super market? I enquired. The commercial fisher gets about $10-$12 a kg , filleted. So the processor (eg Sandfords, Talleys) put 100% on, then the supermarket 100% on that. Result the $12 a kg becomes about $47 a kg.

There is a good story for an investigate journalist. The solution is to catch your own. But Minister Phil Heatley and his ministry don’t want the public to have that right going by the silly rules of lowered bag limits, slot rules etc, i.e. the shambles around reopening the Sounds blue cod fishing. Exhibition warms the heart Dear Ed, In Auckland Museum, there is currently an exhibition going on. It’s called ‘Mr Jones’ Wives: War Brides of New Zealand Servicemen. From this exhibit there have been some stories in newspapers about the ‘War Brides’ that married Kiwi Servicemen.

Wake up, Jeff Dear Ed, Once again Mr Williams (Bible Baptist) distorts the truth to discredit the Revival Centres International (RCI). Pastor Lloyd Longfield never predicted Christ would ‘start reigning from Jerusalem’ on 17th September 2001. Mr Williams has never met Pastor Lloyd, never been to a Revival Centre meeting, and never subscribed to our Voice of Revival Magazine. He, or a follower, has obviously scoured the internet searching for an ‘opportunity’, and has stumbled upon an article from our Voice of Revival magazine, from June 1984. It commences with the words, ‘let’s use poetic licence for a moment’ and paints an imaginary timeline. You would have to be seriously stupid or deeply malicious (both?) to claim it was a prediction. Actually, we are famous worldwide for preaching ‘no man knows the day nor the hour’; and have done since the 1940’s! One needs only do their research properly, with an honest heart. Aero Club welcomes new microlight Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk was invited to fly in the Marlborough Aero Club’s latest aircraft addition, the WT-9 Dynamic. Yesterday morning I had the unique opportunity to tick something off my own bucket list – flying an aircraft. And not just any aircraft, Marlborough Aero Club’s latest microlight addition, the WT-9 Dynamic. The Club has invested in the Dynamic, which brand new is worth around $200,000, to offer aspiring and student pilots the chance to fly a modern, fast and fun aircraft at an affordable rate. After photographing Chief Flying Instructor Travers Tennant

beside the microlight, he invited me to join him on a 20 minute flight. The thought of being in a microlight began to curl my toes, but I willingly accepted and shimmied myself into the seat. The smooth take-off and stunning views as we circled Blenheim were absolutely amazing and well worth the experience. As Travers handed over controls, he described what most beginners felt as being “free”. “The experience of the flight really sells itself, the only way I can explain the thrill is to take people up and watch their smiles erupt,” he says. By Celeste Lodewyk Funny stories and past memories were shared amongst P.A.M.S clothing shop staff and customers last week as the shop celebrated 25-years servicing the Blenheim community. The Presbyterian and Methodist Shop (P.AM.S) was opened on May 25, 1986 after a need for good used clothing was identified within the community. Money made from the clothing was then put back into Marlborough by way of grants and funding of voluntary organisations. The store was originally opened at the Maxwell Road end of Queen Street, but after only four months was moved to its current location. When the Sun visited the shop last week, there were balloons hung and clothing specials to mark the 25-year milestone. In addition around 90 people including P.A.M.S volunteers took part in a fashion parade on Wednesday where outfits sourced from the shop were worn. Shop manager Diana Elliott says P.A.M.S volunteers were the force behind the shop’s 25-year long success. “Volunteers do everything from collecting clothing from our bins located around Blenheim and sorting through them, to pricing them and selling in our shop. “We have many people to thank including the community for continuing to support us,” she says. Elspeth Wells, who has volunteered for P.A.M.S since it was first established, says she feels the work has been worthwhile. “Being part of something which benefits families and individuals in the community has always been a driving force for volunteers.

To date there have been 85 flights since the Dynamic arrived. Living up to its name, the modern carbon-fibre Dynamic cruises easily at 120kts on only 11 litres per hour. It is the latest addition to the Club’s fleet of seven aircraft, and replaces their existing microlight. Young family or expectant parents? Swing by the Expo! Over 1000 visitors flocked to the Marlborough Parents Centre ‘Parent and Child Expo’ last year, but organisers say this year is set to be bigger and better than ever. Held at the Marlborough Convention Centre, this will be the Centre’s third year running the Expo, a much anticipated annual event attracting young families, expectant parents, grandparents and friends. There will be 49 exhibitor sites showcasing their products, services and expert advice including retail stalls, health services, childhood education, Plunket, photographers plus much more, says Expo

co-ordinator Stacey Inwood. “This year we have a great mix of exhibitors, some of which have come from as far as Timaru and Wellington as well as a large retail section where visitors can purchase their products. “Many of these exhibitors offer discounted prices for the expo so bring along some money and benefit from these great promotions,” she says. In addition, visitors will have the chance to participate in interactive demonstrations by exhibitors, while children can enjoy loads of free entertainment including clowns, Pom Pom the Clown is a popular attraction as Indigo Biehler found out at last year’s Expo.

With loads of positive feedback received throughout the past three year’s, the Marlborough Parents Centre has decided to introduce some exciting new changes to this year’s event. Everyone loves a surprise, so for the first 1000 paying adults through the doors, the Marlborough Parents Centre has put together some ‘goodie’ bags. Inside the goodie bags are items donated by local and New Zealand businesses. Another exciting addition to the

A fun colouring competition is also being held by the Marlborough Parents Centre and will run until June 10. The Marlborough Parents Centre is part of a national volunteer organisation of over 50 centres throughout New Zealand, and is run locally by parents and has been in Marlborough for over 30 years. To celebrate its role within the community, the Centre will start the week with the Marlborough Parents Centre Parent

and Child Expo 2011, says the Centre’s President Maria Hine. “We believe that parenting is everything and we work with parents to equip them with the knowledge, skills and support so they can be the best parents they can possibly be, and the Expo is the perfect way to begin celebrations. “The Parent Centre Week is also a great opportunity to raise awareness of the services we offer the local community,” she says. Marlborough Parents Centre offers a wide range of courses starting with the ever popular Child Birth Education classes, through to Baby and You, Moving and

Munching as well as Positive Parenting courses (Positive Parenting is now called Parenting FUNdamentals). “If you have a child aged 0-6 years of age then we can offer you fun and relevant courses, peer support or networking and a huge information base that can help you in any area of parenting,” says Ms Hine. To celebrate this week, all babies born in Marlborough will go into the draw to win a lovely gift basket. Marlborough Parents Centre will also be thanking all our wonderful midwives with the presentation of a special little gift to thank them for all their hard work. Raff le and spot prizes amount to over $3000, and include everything from a family return trip with a car on the Interislander,

merino clothing and facial products, through to vouchers for canvas printing. For more details on the prizes keep checking our Facebook page (search Marlborough Parent and Child Expo), “like” us and you could be in to win great weekly prizes.

Noel Templeton’s 20 year journey

Noel Templeton Optometrists: PrescriPTiON suNglass sPecialisTs

CONGRATULATIONS Noel Templeton Optometrists on

20 years serving our local community!

Having reliable and loyal staff is what Noel Templeton attributes to the success of his business over the past 20 years. His business, Noel Templeton Optometrists has branches in Blenheim, Picton and Westport which are operated by staff who have been with Noel and his business partner Diane Templeton for much of the journey. It all began when Noel graduated with a Diploma in Optometry in 1977, and after graduating he became a partner in an Auckland practice specialising in contact lens fitting. Fed up with the central city lifestyle, Noel relocated to Marlborough. “The practice was shrinking because of lack of car parking, so I knew I needed to relocate and open my own practice,” he says. The opportunity to purchase a Picton based practice presented itself in 1991, so Noel took it

The team at Chris Day Optical would like to congratulate Marlborough Optical on 20 years of service to Blenheim

over from the late Peter Maynes. This practice is today located in the Picton Mariners Mall. It soon became apparent that the majority of Noel’s patient base was in Blenheim, so that same year he opened a new practice on Blenheim’s High Street, central location with plenty of free parking. The High Street building was at the time a run down warehouse so Noel completely refurbished it to its present day glory. Noel went on to complete his Diploma in Ocular Pharmacy Therapeutics in 2004, a significant development for his practice. “This enabled the practice to treat patients with antibiotics which is something we could not do before,” he says. In 2004 Noel opened his third branch in Westport and is today proud to say that all three practices are successful and going strong.

Noel Templeton Optometrists offers a wide range of designer, budget or sports frames, lenses and contact lenses as well as sunglasses. Blenheim’s practice has an on-site workshop and optical technician, enabling staff to cut lenses, mend and modify frames without having to send them back to the manufacturer.

Expert Advice: Finding the right spectacle frames is important, but not always easy. Noel’s staff are trained to help you with your selection. They consider your face shape, hairstyle, skin sensitivity, personality and colouring as well as your lenses. Service Guarantee: You can always have your frames adjusted or professionally cleaned. This service is completely free for the life of your glasses.

20 Congratulations on 20 years in business to Noel Templeton from all of us at The Sun Newspaper.

Do you have a Bible question for Jeff? Email us your question at pastor@mbbc.org.nz or post it to us. Full confidentiality is assured at all times. Q – What do you think of the prophecy made by that American preacher Harold Camping that failed – and his new prediction that the end of the world will be on 21 October 2011? (GP - email) A – Yawn Camping is a false-prophet – full stop – end of story. “And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt NOT be afraid of him.” (Deut 18:21-22) These fellows are not rare or uncommon – expect more soon! “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.” (Matt 24:11) “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you…” (2 Pet 2:1a) You are a “class” A sucker and disobedient to the word of God as well, if you listen to everyone who comes along making a prediction and sounding spiritual. Your responsibility is clear: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1) Blenheim is full of this crowd – no wonder the average Joe Bloggs is disgusted with religion! As we have showed in recent weeks, the founders of many groups have all been guilty of making false prophecies - feel free to write me for documentation. While we fully support freedom of religion in New Zealand and your right to believe anything you want to believe, we also believe that people should have the benefit of “the rest of the story” that is often ignored, hidden, or explained away when false prophets make false prophecies. Camping explained that his prophecy didn’t really fail and gave some lame excuse about Jesus really coming back, but it was all spiritual and not literal…. Students of church history will note that this is the EXACT SAME excuse given by some of the above groups for their failed prophecies – the more things change, the more things stay the same…… The only really amazing thing in all of this failed prophecy saga of the past few weeks has been the reaction of the media. The glee at getting yet another chance to stick the knife into “Christianity” in general (despite the Harold Camping crowd not being representative of true Christianity) was pretty obvious. Fortunately the Lord will be sorting this all out one day. Now that everyone has had a good laugh and let their guard down, may we remind you of Matt 24:44 – “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

Honky tonk band one of the best

The countdown begins for i-SITE

Finalist in NZ Music Awards

The Brendon Ham Band. Brendon is pictured far right.

A Tua Marina-born and bred country music star is rising even higher after being chosen as a finalist in the New Zealand Music Awards ‘Best Country Music Album’ for 2011. Brendon Ham left his Tua Marina home 16 years ago to pursue his music career and, today, his band ‘The Brendon Ham Band’ is regarded as the country’s greatest premier honky-tonk unit with their own brand of country music. “The band is incredibly proud to be finalists in such an important event in the NZ music scene, especially in a genre of music that can be overlooked in NZ by

mainstream broadcasters. “However we believe in the music we play and are keeping busy with live gigs, playing our own material,” Brendon says. This is the first shot at the prestigious NZ music award for the band, which will travel to Gore tomorrow for the awards. It is not the only award nomination the band has received. They won the 2008 Variety Artists of the NZ Top Group Award, while Brendon was also a nominee for both the 2008 Variety Artists of NZ Top Male Performer, and the 2010 Male Artist of the Year.

JULY IN SIGHT: The new Blenheim i-SITE is well underway toward being finished next month.

The new Blenheim i-SITE Visitor Centre is on budget and on schedule to open mid July 2011. With the roof now on, building contractor Haack Construction are turning their attention to the external timber cladding, window joinery and landscaping, which will be underway this week. In the meantime the Destination Marlborough team are working on the exhibition displays to showcase Marlborough visitor experiences that will motivate travellers to spend more time and money in the region as well as providing a comprehensive New Zealand travel booking service for visitors and locals. Destination Marlborough General Manager Tracy Johnston says “A new and improved i-SITE for Blenheim will allow us to present the region to visitors much more effectively. We are designing a space that will orientate and introduce visitors to Marlborough through maps, visuals and interactive displays. This will create a platform to promote our region that is worthy of the experience visitors have when they come to Marlborough”. Just over 1.5 million travellers come through Marlborough each year. The i-SITE plays a pivotal role in encouraging more of them to stay in the region. Designed by Studio of Pacific Architecture, the new building will complement the historic Railway Station. KiwiRail, owner of the Railway Station building, is planning to restore and upgrade the building. Work on the railway station refurbishment will commence shortly.

Sun Business Update

Leave it to the experts Saving money on outboards or anything marine - especially in a salt water environment - can be as easy as rethinking the way we do it. Many times, we see unnecessary expenses caused by a boat being parked up during the winter months with no more than maybe a wash and vacuum. Unbeknown to the owner, the boat had collected fishing line around the prop shaft, which had damaged the shaft seals and left water where the oil should be. Water will damage the gearbox gears and bearings in a short period of time, which could easily cost $2500-$3000 if these parts need to be replaced. Earlier this year, Powerboat Centre convinced a customer to bring in his boat motor for a lookover, even though he had bought it under the assurance it would not need to be serviced for at least three years, or three hundred hours. This is how companies market their products. In a perfect environment, with superior oils and materials, this would not normally be an issue. But when you are playing in the sea, one of the harshest environments known to

Winter Health & Wellbeing

Stay motivated and positive Don’t use the cold weather as an excuse not to exercise. Use these motivational tips to help keep you on track.

During winter, activities such as Pilates and yoga are often available at halls, studios and other venues.

The winter months are typically when people slow down their exercise regime, favouring the indoors more and reducing their daily exercise. For many the two challenges associated with winter exercise are finding a suitable place to train out of the cold weather, and finding the motivation to get up off the couch and into a regular exercise regime. It is by sticking to a regular fitness routine which will keep you on the track toward keeping in shape and remaining healthy and positive during those dreary months.

Indoor exercise: There are a range of indoor exercise options which are also a great way to get you out of the house and in a new environment. • Joining a gym. Health and fitness centres provide a wide variety of exercise options in a comfortable and supportive environment. A three-month

Many sports can be played indoors, such as basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton, squash and soccer. • Aqua aerobics. If you live near an indoor heated pool, you could swim some laps, or try an aqua-aerobics class. Training in water has a low risk of injury, and is a great way to add variety to your workout routine. • Mind/body classes. Activities such as Pilates and yoga are often available at halls, studios and other venues. These activities can help develop your balance, posture, core strength and flexibility, and help you to relax at the same time.

Fifteen minutes later, a 20-year-old unemployed woman was arrested for disorderly behaviour. At 2.10pm, a 26-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for giving false details to police.

At 2pm on Monday, a 17-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail curfew.

Truck crash on SH1 The driver of a truck and trailer which crashed on SH1 near Ward on Wednesday night appeared to have been taking evasive action, Blenheim Police say. The vehicle crashed into a farm paddock just before midnight, leaving the trailer unit tipped on its side and cattle hides all over the road. It also snapped a power pole, leaving loose wires on the ground. Police say the vehicle had ended up on the wrong side of the road after coming around a slight bend, before losing control. The driver was taken to Wairau Hospital with moderate injuries. Enquiries are continuing into the cause of the accident and charges are likely, police say.

Next census to be held in March, 2013 The next New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings will be held in March 2013, Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson announced on Friday. The 2011 Census was postponed after Christchurch’s February 22 earthquake. “The 2011 Census could not have been successfully completed given the national state of emergency and the probable impact on census results,” Mr Williamson said. Mr Williamson said the Government and Statistics NZ had considered holding the census in March 2012. However, it was agreed the time period was too short to ensure the census could be planned accurately. “Statistics New Zealand will now begin planning and work on the 2013 Census,” Mr Williamson said.

Seven proves unlucky Seven people have been arrested following an incident at a Riversdale address on Tuesday afternoon. They included five men between 22 and 51 years of age, and two young people who are being dealt with by Youth Aid Section. Police say enquiries are continuing into the incident.

And because Moa beer is the beer that comes from Marlborough, which is nice, because mostly Marlborough just makes wine, which is a bit boring, we’ll put it in terms that Marlburian’s can relate to... Moa brewery on Jacksons Road needs a “cellar hand”.

Picton Store

The set roster is a 4 days on 4 days off rotation with a 6.00am start, working between 3-5 hours a day (Winter–Summer ).

Mitre 10 MEGA Marlborough is a well established, locally owned and operated business.

Cellar hand

Moa beer has been going great guns lately and we need to produce more beer. Since our beer is brewed using traditional costly, inefficient and labour intensive techniques, in order to produce more Moa beer we need more labour.

Apparently, it involves working with pumps and filters, rackings, transfers and filling bottles, putting caps on/ corks in...and other stuff.

Picton Village Bakkerij

You will have excellent food handling practices, customer service experience and be able to work as part of a well organised team.

All-girl adventure race By Celeste Lodewyk The ultimate Spring challenge is edging closer, with organisers calling for more entries in what can only be described as an “all girl adventure race”. The 2011 Spring Challenge consists of three separate disciplines – rafting, mountain biking and hiking. The journey is completed by threewoman teams and in the past, up to 600 women have competed. This year will be the first time it

has been held in Marlborough, but because the course and location is kept a secret until the night before the event, the Sun can not disclose the location. The Spring Challenge is broken into three events, a three hour, a six hour and a 12 hour event. Each of the team’s members selects a discipline. Organiser Jodie Fa’avae says the biking stage is aimed at beginner to intermediate levels, while the hiking will be mostly on well formed trails

and farm roads, and the rafting is supervised by professional commercial rafting guides. In the lead up to the Spring Challenge, Jodie is hosting an introductory evening at Chequers Café on Wednesday, June 22 from 7:30pm to 9pm. “Join me for a relaxed get together where we can discuss the Spring Challenge and I can answer any questions you may have,” she says. For more information see the website www.springchallenge.co.nz

Cannons in upset win Woodbourne Cannons who hadn’t beaten Magnum in over 8 seasons found their big guns with an upset win, 25-21 and 25-19 in the senior Volleyball competition on Thusday. The young guns from MBC played a more experienced outfit in Wayward Spikers. The first two sets were a strug-

gle for MBC, 25-15 and 25-14. In the final set with just one point in mind and their pride to fight for the lads from MBC were level pegging it right up until 19 all. Eventually Wayward Spikers taking out 25-22 and gain maximum points which sees them atop the points table.

The non-championship game saw a double-header played by Woodbourne Cannons against Flamin Mongrels. Flamin Mongrels were more hungry and fed off a number of mistakes which was the difference in the two sides. Mongrels deserving the next two sets; 25-19 and 25-20.

Your week in sport

Keep your hands off the Phoenix, Auckland New Zealand Football’s supposed push to relocate the Wellington Phoenix soccer team to Auckland is akin to a child throwing away an unpopular toy only for it to become the next coolest thing. If the rumours are true and I am inclined to believe Wellington city councillor John ‘Mystery’ Morrison in most cases - New Zealand Football and millionaire car dealer Colin Giltrap have been in talks to take the team away from its Wellington base. The possibilities apparently discussed include booking six games in Auckland in the upcoming A-League season or share games around the country, and rebrand the franchise as the

New Zealand Phoenix. Wellington, the sporting capital of New Zealand, has earned the right to retain the Phoenix. One may argue the Wellington public has had a better team to support than Auckland followers did, but a large part of the Phoenix’s success can in fact be attributed to its fans. Wellington has embraced the Phoenix like no other New Zealand city could. The nowfamous Yellow Fever, as well as the general interest in and around the city, has created a buzz in New Zealand about soccer not seen since 1981. It’s no coincidence the All Whites were playing in Wellington when they qualified

Damian George

for the Soccer World Cup last year via a victory over Bahrain. The packed house of more than 35,000 fans helped spur the team to victory, as players and coach Ricky Herbert acknowledged. Auckland made a mess of having New Zealand’s only professional soccer franchise based in its city. Now, with the re-emergence of soccer’s popularity and the success of the Phoenix, it wants it back. The Wellington Phoenix have qualified for the A-League finals series the past two seasons; the former Football Kings, then NZ Knights, did not qualify once in eight years of trying. Wellington has created the Phoenix. It deserves to keep them.

Dorothy Fitzpatrick is all ready to go ten-pin bowling this weekend.

Ready to strike The phones are ringing hot and staff have already begun to take bookings as the Blenheim Indoor Sports Centre prepares to open its new ten-pin bowling facility this month. Owners Dorothy and Brian Fitzpatrick say although they had hoped to have Ten Pin Bowling open in time for Queens Birthday Weekend, there are still some final preparations yet to be made which may delay them a little while longer. “At the beginning there were some delays with equipment and building tools coming from Australia, but we are working hard to make up time. “In the mean time we are taking bookings so if you want to secure a time ahead of the rush, now is the time to contact us,” Dorothy says. Plans to add a ten-pin bowling facility to their existing centre first began two years ago.

“Blenheim had not had ten-pin bowling for nearly 10 years and we felt it would provide a much needed boost to our business. “It will also give families something to do that is affordable and fun,” she says. Construction of the seven lane tenpin bowling facility began on May 9 this year, and replaces one of the centre’s multipurpose courts. But fear not sporting enthusiasts, Dorothy and Brian are setting plans in motion to put up a new 1000 square/ metre building behind the centre which will be available for large sporting events. For more information or to make a booking for ten-pin bowling, contact the Blenheim Indoor Sports Centre today.

Shave Off success continues

BALD: Bex Gardiner and Terry Sloan are all smiles after losing their locks for Bex’s Shave For a Cure charity fundraiser last Saturday. Photo supplied.

By Celeste Lodewyk Over the past couple of months the Sun has featured local individuals who have been fundraising for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation by shaving their heads. While some of these people have since begun growing their hair back, another supporter Bex Gardiner has recently lopped off her shiny brown locks. Bex, a mother of four was joined by Marlborough District Councillor Terry Sloan and fellow supporter John Tapp who organised a Shave Off at Biddy Kates Irish Bar in Blenheim on May 21. News of their Shave Off soon spread which attracted a large crowd of followers who donated around $400 on the night. Terry and John put themselves up for auction while Bex received individual donations. Bex has set herself a target of $1000 and says she still has around $400 to go, but is determined to reach it. “I have seen so many friends and family members go through cancer treatments, some of them did not make it but it was their strength and determination to fight which has inspired me to do this,” she says. Since shaving her head, Bex says it has been interesting seeing how people react to her bald head. “People have tried to get me ahead of them in the supermarket line, but I just laugh and graciously decline their offer and tell them about the Shave Off. Some people are surprised and others are really supportive but generally most appreciate what I am trying to do,” she says. Despite it being Bex’s first time fundraising for Shave for a Cure, she says she could easily do it again. “Cancer touches everyone in one way or another, so being able to help through fundraising is truly rewarding. And yes I will definitely consider future Shave Offs,” she says.
