By Damian George Staff at Blenheim’s recentlyopened oral health clinic got to test their new equipment for the first time on Monday as they welcomed their first patient. Redwoodtown School student Bradley Gifford, 10, accompanied by his mother Claire, were the first through the doors of the Marlborough Community Oral Health Service Clinic, officially opened on June 1. The facility, situated at Innes House beside Marlborough Girls’ College, was esatblished to centralise school students’ dental clinics in the region. Dental therapist Andrea Carr, Bradley’s therapist on Monday,

says staff are excited about being able to work at the state-of-the-art clinic. “The facilities are great, everything’s just a lot newer,” she says. “We also have a whole new computer system - before, we were using a paper system.” One of the new pieces of equipment, an ‘ultra-sonic scaler’ which removes tartar from teeth, was put to use by Andrea on her first patient. “It’s more efficient than doing it by hand and it’s easier on therapists.” Part of a Ministry of Health initiative to modernise the oral health service, the clinic is also aimed at providing a more ‘holis-

One aspect of this is encouraging parents to come to appointments, Andrea says. “Previously, a lot of children just came from the classroom. “Now, we’ve got the parents to talk to rather than just the children and it is the parents who dictate the children’s habits.” She says the clinic aims to keep patients and their school therapists matched up as much as possible. The Marlborough clinic is one of five which will be opened in the Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman area. The others are in Motueka, Richmond, Stoke and Nelson.

By Damian George Auck la nd lawyer Denis Sheard says his findings from a review of Marlborough District Council tendering processes will not be ready to present at tomorrow’s monthly council meeting as planned. Denis Sheard M r Shea rd, of Auckland law firm Simpson Grierson, was appointed as the independent commissioner in April this year to investigate claims raised by councillor Jamie Arbuckle that council staff had tampered with tender documents. He subsequently interviewed 46 people, including eight councillors, in Blenheim in early May. “A lot of issues were raised with me and it is taking more time to assess and record my conclusions than was originally anticipated,” Mr Sheard told The Sun yesterday. “The time frame for the review was set at the time of my appointment and before I had spoken to anyone.” Mr Sheard says he does not expect the delay will be a lengthy one, and hopes to have it completed by the end of the week. “However, I was unable to finalise the report in time for it to go on the agenda for this Thursday’s meeting.” He says he cannot speculate as to whether any changes will be made within council as a result of the report, as that is a matter for the council to decide. He says he did not find the review process especially difficult. Wellington lawyer Richard Fowler had initially been appointed to head the inquiry, but was later replaced after Cr Arbuckle objected to Mr Fowler having had previous involvement with the council. Among Mr Sheard’s “terms of reference” was to review council’s existing tender and contract manual processes and assess whether they varied significantly from other local authority contract and tender processes.

Time runs out for parking wardens By Damian George Wairau Power Services has announced the end of its sixyear tenure as Marlborough parking enforcement operators, citing the change in management of the policy from the Marlborough District Council to the NZ Transport Agency. Wa irau Power Ser vices managing director Richard Pagan says the company did not re-apply for the Parking Enforcement and Meter Maintenance Contract which expires tomorrow. “Fundamentally, the contract is controlled, monitored and directed under the authority of Marlborough Roads,” Mr Pagan says. “However, this has shifted now to the NZ Transport Agency – this may see a shift in policy implementation towards national standards rather than local directives.” Mr Pagan says the new parking enforcement contract is a shift from a “performancebased” concept to a more stand-

ard ‘management-type’ one. He says the new contract resembles “going back in time” and does not reflect changing employment conditions. “Predominantly, the contract in its entirety would see a decline in services to the public…,” he says. “The contract was extremely similar to the one we signed back in 2005. “Things have moved on with employment issues, payment to staff, annual leave, minimum wage - that did not appear to us to be taken into consideration.” He says health and safety issues such as work-related stress and possible confrontations with members also appeared to be overlooked. The new contractors would only be asked to employ two parking wardens, meaning annual leave for workers would be hard to organise, he says.

The company currently has five full-time parking wardens and one part-time. “We’ve been involved in this for six years. It’s a big step to take a step back and say we don’t want to renew the contract.” The company wrote to the MDC to request it to reconsider implementation of the new policy, but was told it was out of the council’s hands. Wairau Power Services has held the parking enforcement contract since April, 2005. It was asked to continue as contractors this year for an extension period of three months as alterations were made to the contract. Mr Pagan says one person has accepted employment with the new contractor, understood to be Armourguard NZ.

Lee has been writing songs since the age of seven, and her “easy-listening” brand of music is inspired by artists such as Julia Deans, Jack Johnson and Bic Runga. Nicole says both songs have been written since the beginning of the year, after she found her song-writing formula. “I was writing but I’d never been able to finish a song or get a song done,” she says. “But I got really inspired one day in music class and I just went home and within ten minutes I had a song. “It just sort of came.” She says she has two distinct styles - classical/opera and contemporary - and lists her main influences as Hayley Westenra and Gin Wigmore. Both girls say they would like to pursue a career in music.

By Damian George The Outward Bound cutter boat badly damaged when it was hit by a Dolphin Watch catamaran in February this year is nearly set for a return to the water. The cutter had been left with a large hole through its midship and a wrecked bow following the collision in the Marlborough Sounds on February 5. After nearly three months in the hands of Carey’s Boatyard boat builders Trevor Cozens and Keith Henson, the boat is set for a launch date of July 9. “It’s been quite a major job because of the type of construction of the boat,” Keith told The Sun last week.

“It’s what’s called diagonal planking, which means it has three layers of timber, so we had to stagger the joints to get the strength back.” Keith says he and Trevor had to effectively re-build half of the boat from the stern to the midship. “It’s been quite an enjoyable job for us actually ‘cause it’s more traditional work - working with timber rather than just sanding and painting which is what a lot of our work involves.” Keith and Trevor told The Sun last week work on the boat was almost complete, with only finishing touches to be applied. The boat will be launched at Carey’s Boatyard.

A Maritime NZ spokesman says the organisation’s investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Eight school students on board the Outward Bound boat sustained injuries as a result of the crash, with one suffering a broken leg.

The skipper of the Dolphin Watch Ecotour boat was stood down indefinitely following the incident. The spokesman says it is not known when the investigation will be completed.

MARLBOROUGH STADIUM TRUST

A new web-based map capable of measuring rising rivers in a storm has been launched by the Marlborough District Council. Designed by the council’s information technology staff, the Flood Watch map shows the current status of Marlborough’s river flows, river levels and rainfall. It also has the capacity to display water levels in real time.

A spokesperson for the MDC says the user-friendly tool is designed to operate as a flood alert for anyone who could be affected by severe weather, particularly farmers, travellers and people living in flood-prone areas. The spokesperson says the website will enable people to prepare should water levels become dangerous. The site can be used by visiting www.marlborough.govt.nz.

Method For every cup of Arborio rice you will need at least 3 cups of liquid. Heat the stock and wine in a saucepan bring to a light boil, turn the heat down. In a big based pan, sauté the onion in the olive oil until transparent. Add the rice and sauté until the grains go white don’t let them brown. Add 1/3 of the mushrooms and one ladle of liquid in with the rice and stir through until liquid is absorbed by the rice. Keep ladling the liquid into the rice repeating the

earlier process adding the mushrooms as you go. Staggering the addition of the mushrooms will give the risotto a different texture. You can add them in one lot if you prefer. Continue adding the liquid until the rice is just soft and is going creamy, if you run out of liquid use hot water and salt and pepper to taste. Cold water won’t absorb the same way and the risotto won’t become creamy. When the rice is cooked through, turn off the heat and sprinkle through the blue cheese. Serve, Top with parsley.

Colin Kennedy Robinson, formerly of Nelson, was found drowned by Marlborough Search and Rescue next to his 10-metre launch at about 2pm. A post-mortem on the man is yet to be done.

Jason David Warren, 30, pleaded guilty to assault with a blunt instrument when he appeared in Blenheim District Court. Resident survey underway The Marlborough District Council is currenty conducting its annual resident satisfaction survey, with 600 randomly-selected locals to be phoned between now and early July.

The survey will ask for people’s views on the performance of the MDC over the last year. It will be carried out by South Island-based business Research First.

Scoreboard brought back to life By Damian George Spectators at last Wednesday’s rugby match between Marlborough’s Red Devils and Japan A will have noticed Lansdowne Park’s electronic scoreboard was back up-and-running after spending a couple of years on the sidelines. The restoration of the tired scoreboard was largely thanks to the work of Nelson-based company BlueBerryIT, which had been approached by the Tasman Rugby to provide a permanent solution to the problem. BlueberryIT business manager Butch Bradley told The Sun the “rugby-mad” company felt compelled to do something in time for

the international fixture, as well as regional club rugby semi-finals and finals. “The union said they had been told nothing could be done but asked if we could help and, with some big games coming up for Marlborough, we didn’t want to let them down,” he says. ‘So our ‘techs’ set about finding the solution and the parts to bring the scoreboard back to life.” The man responsible for the resurrection was technician Phil Urquhart, who was able to revive the scoreboard in three to four hours. “I’d never worked on a scoreboard before,” he says.

“But if someone wants something fixed, you have to fix it, so you just have to find a way.” Phil says the scoreboard’s software could not be upgraded, so the only choice was to repair the existing functions. About a month ago, Bruce Bronwich from the Marlborough District Council and Ian Martella of Callahan & Martella Electrical had got the scoreboard working temporarily, but were unable to guarantee its longevity. Marlborough Rugby sub-union area manager Aaron Senior says a new scoreboard was out of the union’s budget, so he is hugely grateful to all involved.

Mighty problem Dear Ed, When the Tiny Mighty company came to Blenheim, I was pleasantly surprised and welcomed a smaller competitve supplier for our power. But after being a customer of theirs for the past ten months, I am disgusted in their treatment to their customers and have found that I haven’t been the only one. For a small company trying to make its name in our community, I would have thought they would be more accommodating to our needs. I am a solo parent of a 16-month-old daughter and rely on a solid supply from my power supplier. After the past cold spell, power consumption has skyrocketed and costs become hard to cover for solo parents on a benefit. I recieved a statement four weeks ago and then a threatening text message two weeks later and a disconnection notice one week after that. It hadn’t even gone into the next

month. I went through the channels and had it paid on Friday and yet, come Monday, they came and cut my power. I had contacted them like requested and explained my situation and the lady laughed. I didn’t find it very funny at all. No other company threatens their customers three weeks after billing with disconnection or laughs at the fact that it had been paid three days before and still disconnected. I had put several people onto this supplier. Now, with much regret, people should be aware of the ruthless tactics (quoted by Marlborough Lines personnel) that this company uses. I’m certainly changing my power company to a more known local company that is interested in their customers’ needs; not on a company that uses under-handed tactics and laughs at their own incompetence at our cost... Ross bares his soul Local stone carver Ross Johns is gearing up for his next great challenge, entering his carvings into one of the country’s biggest art festivals as Celeste Lodewyk finds out.

SOUL: Local stone carver Ross Johns has been selected to feature five of his carvings in the New Zealand Affordable Arts Festival in Wellington next month.

Last year the Sun profiled local man Ross Johns who has an incredible talent for stone carving. His Maori heritage and extensive travels around New Zealand are what have inspired each individual carving, hence his artist name ‘Soul of the Stone’. During our previous meeting Ross shared his life’s story and reason for becoming a stone carver, and now one year on he has some exciting news to share. Ross was invited to apply to have his carvings feature in the NZ Affordable Arts Festival next month and was duly accepted. This makes Ross Marlborough’s representative in the sculptures category. While most artists are required only to submit three pieces of art, Ross was asked to take five. “I was thrilled to be asked to apply and even happier to get into the festival, it is one of the largest art festivals in the country,” he says. The festival is being held at the TSB Arena in Wellington from July 28 to 31 and will feature some of the country’s best artists. Submitted artwork must be below the value of $5000. Ross will be taking five very special pieces along to the festival including a bowl carved from a rare conglomerate stone (pictured) , otherwise known as ‘puddingstone’. “This is one of the oldest stones in NZ, approximately 4.5million years old and I found it

in northern Milford, the only other place to find a stone like this was on a little island on the north east of Tasmania. “I am confident that this will be a winner, mainly because of its history,” he says. Other carved pieces Ross will be taking are a grey stone bowl found in Marlborough’s Wairau River, a pounamu (greenstone) bowl from the Arahura River near Hokitika, a four-leafed clover shaped bowl carved also from pounamu and a feldspar bowl. Many of Ross’s carvings have not only made it around NZ, but are also centre pieces in homes all over the world. “To date there are four of my carvings in Russia, three of them pounamu,” he says. The unique quality of Ross’s carvings are that they remain in their natural shape, all he does is carve out the inside of the stone and polish it. “The stone’s soul determines what I do with it, I follow the shape and natural design. It can be months before something comes of it,” he says. Ross has spent many years scouring the land and rivers of NZ for unique pieces of stone or rock. Each suitable piece he then transforms into a perfectly polished bowl or plate and exhibits them in numerous art galleries. He has held many local exhibitions including at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre where he will be during the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Teen assaults dad A 15-year-old man has been referred to Youth Aid after allegedly assaulting his father during a domestic-related incident in Spring Creek. He was arrested and charged with assault and wilful damage.

Dual charge for teen A 19-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested on Thursday afternoon in relation to a historic theft in Christchurch. The man was arrested at the same time for driving while disqualified. Also on Thursday, two unemployed male students, both 17, were arrested for breaching their bail conditions.

Trespass charge A 30-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for trespassing on a High Street property just after 2am on Friday morning. Shortly after, a 21-year-old male apprentice electrician was arrested for disorderly behaviour following an incident on Fres-

wick Street on Blenheim. At 10.30pm, a 19-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Further assaults An 18-year-old man was arrested following an “unprovoked” attack on a 23-year-old man on Percy Street on Saturday morning. The offender, a vineya r d wo rke r, wa s released on bail and was due to appear in Blenheim District Court on Monday. Shortly after, a 26-year-old male meat worker was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after allegedly entered a licenced premise with a loaded slug gun. He was released on bail and was also due to appear in Blenheim District Court on Monday. Just before midday, a 23-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions. A 40-year-old female cleaner was arrested just after 7pm for pushing a Constable who was dealing with a domestic incident in Redwoodtown. Later that evening, a 23-year-old male labourer was arrested for

Six Sunday morning arrests An 18-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching the liquor ban shortly after midnight. An hour later, a 34 year old male farm hand was arrested for theft and breaching the liquor ban. At about 2am, a 25-year-old male gib stopper was arrested for trespassing on a licenced premise. He had earlier been removed from the same property. Soon after, a 22-year-old woman was arrested for striking a 19-year-old woman with a wine glass, cutting the victim’s face. The offender, a mussel opener, was charged with assault with a weapon. At about 3am, a 45-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested on a warrant relating to a breach of bail. Half an hour later, a 24-year-old male labourer was arrested for disorderly behaviour following an incident on Kinross Street in Blenheim. At 6.10pm, a 21-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions, as was an 18-year-old male vineyard worker at 8.40pm.

Identification tags with a name and address will help if your pet is lost, and make sure dogs are micro-chipped and registered. Water In a disaster, water supplied to your home could be affected. This is why it is essential to have a sufficient water supply for all members of the household. Civil Defence advice is for everyone to have at least three litres of drinking water per person, per day for three days. It’s also important to have one extra litre of water for the following: • Washing food and cooking each meal • Washing dishes after a meal • Washing yourself (one litre per day for each person) Storing water • Prepare six large, plastic soft drink bottles of water for each person, including children. Add some extra for pets • Wash bottles thoroughly in hot water • Fill each bottle with tap water until it overflows. Add five drops of household bleach per litre of water and put in storage. Do not drink for at least 30 minutes after disinfecting • Label each bottle with dates showing when the bottles were filled and

when they need to be refilled • Check the bottles every 12 months. If the water is not clear, throw it out and refill clean bottles with clean water and bleach • Store bottles in two separate places, somewhere dark away from direct sunlight where there is not likely to be flooding • Alternatively, fill plastic ice cream containers with water, cover, label and keep in the freezer. These can help keep food cool if the power is off and can also be used for drinking. • Keep a supply of ice cubes and fruit juices. Food In an emergency you may not be able to go to the supermarket for several days, or even weeks. • Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. • Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water. • Pack a manual can opener and eating utensils. • Avoid salty foods, as they will make you thirsty. • Choose foods your family will eat. Consider storing: • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables, protein or fruit bars, dry cereal, peanut butter, dried fruit, nuts, crackers, canned juices, nonperishable pasteurized milk, high energy foods, vitamins and food for infants.

By Damian George SPCA Marlborough has vowed to keep a tight leash on 20 newly-built cat traps it received last week. The traps, built by local man Russell Montgomery with the help of Blenheim businesses, will be used by the SPCA to help eradicate stray and feral cat colonies in the wider Marlborough region. Cats caught by the traps will be taken to the SPCA to be de-sexed before being released back into the wild, if deemed healthy enough. SPCA Marlborough branch chairman Alan Rector says the last traps to be employed, about ten years ago, had gradually gone missing after being loaned out to locals. “This time, we will go out to the

Darren Fowke, James Johnston, Andre Groenewald, Jayden Ave-Drew and Tamati Rangiuaia were congratulated by staff on Monday and were presented their certificates by National Kaikoura MP Colin King. The course is conducted in and out of the classroom, placing students in practical, hands on learning environments, says practical tutor Brett Billingsley. “Students are taken to Marlborough farms where they spend four days a week gaining skills and knowledge in fencing, stock handling, use of farm machinery and vehicles. The fifth day is then spent working on theory at the Onsite Education classroom,” he says. Now that they have received their certificates, they are now heading out into the workforce and apply their new knowledge and skills, while Darren plans to carry on and gain his level four certificate.

SPCA Marlborough animal care manager Jess Monk says the ‘Trap Neuter and Return’ [TNR] programme is part of a recent national campaign to decrease the number of animal deaths in SPCAs in New Zealand. “Some people are concerned at the concept of returning cats to the environment but trapping and euthanizing has been proven ineffective,” she says. “Numbers only stabilise in the

short-term, requiring more trapping and killing each year. With TNR, combined with other programmes such as de-sexing pets for low income families, cat populations actually decrease each year.” Mr Montgomery, who was responsible for building the initial traps, was called on only by chance to repeat the task. “I came back after spending four years overseas, met Alan at a party and we got talking and I ended up with the job of making some more.” Most of the materials for the project were provided by Placemakers Blenheim. This week’s question: What is your favourite thing about the Sun and why?

When one actually reads the Bible, it becomes very apparent that God has many names – various Hebrew words are put together in various combinations to form the English terms: God, the Lord, the LORD, the LORD God, the LORD thy God, the LORD of hosts, the God of hosts. In some cases these terms simply appear and are taken at face value – in many other cases these terms are specifically identified as the name of the Creator. Take for instance Deut 28:58 which says in part, “that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;” (original emphasis) About this point you have one of several choices: 1) Accept the Bible as your final authority and take it at face value – one of the Creator’s names is THE LORD THY GOD 2) Run to the Hebrew language and say that God’s name is really Jehovah Elohim even though we don’t speak Hebrew and God could have transferred these Hebrew words into our English Bibles if he wanted to (as he did on dozens of other occasions!). The “Hebrew-words-for-God” crowd thinks we are missing out on something in English even though they don’t know Hebrew and rarely pronounce these words properly. Over and over again in the Bible, God gives and interprets the Hebrew and Greek words he wants us to know (eg. Rev. 9:11) – someone here is guilty of trying to “help God out.” 3) Reject what the Bible says and say that God is only a “title” and not a name. This action is taken despite the fact that we are repeatedly told that “God” is a name or part of a name on numerous occasions (see Gen 16:13; 21:33; etc.). In Exodus 3:15 our Lord said, “And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” This is BEFORE God revealed himself to Moses as the great I AM or Jehovah. Exodus 6:3 says, “I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.” How about we finish this week by letting God answer this week’s Bible question: And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” (Exod 3:13-14)

Finalists decided in Volleyball champs

The Blenheim Masters Swimming Club held its own midwinter swim recently, as seven of its members turned out on a cold and rainy day at Momorangi Bay on June 19. Blenheim Masters Swimming Club secretary Barbara Taylor says the swimmers described the dip as “just like getting under a cold shower”. The club is open to anyone over 20 and caters for all levels of ability. It trains at Stadium 2000 every Thursday night. This year, the club is celebrating its 25th anniversary, after it was established in 1986. It will hold a celebration at the stadium on November 26. * Interested in going? >volleyball The final round of the Marlborough Volleyball Winter League on Thursday saw sides pulling out ‘all the tricks’ in an attempt to qualify for the competition’s finals. The top three contenders in the A, B and C grades were separated by no more than two points going into the round. In A grade action, Woodbourne Cannons won a close contest 2-1 with Wayward Spikers who had already booked a finals berth - taking out the final game 29-27. Fairweathers’ Magnum and Flam in Mongrels then met to vie for the other finals spot, with Fairweathers claiming victory 2-1.

Don’t be fooled, Styris was one of our best He became somewhat of a cult hero and was responsible for the establishment of ‘Team Pig’, but don’t be fooled, Scott ‘The Pig’ Styris was the real deal. The classy all-rounder ended a 12-year international career last week as one of New Zealand’s most accomplished cricketers, with a record which puts him among this country’s best. His test career was short and sweet, and his figures reflect that – 1586 runs at an average of 36.04 – but his ODI numbers are barely matched. His 4483 runs put him sixth on New Zealand’s run-scoring list, at an average of 32.48 - a respectable one on face value but, on closer inspection, even more impressive. After being promoted to No 4

in the batting order at the end of 2002, Styris embarked on a five-year stint in that position (primarily) which saw his average climb from under 20 to more than 33. In that time, two World Cups yielded 767 runs, including 499 at the 2007 tournament (Overall, with 909, Styris sits second only to Stephen Fleming for most World Cup runs for New Zealand). That period saw the emphatic confirmation of a transition from run-of-the-mill medium pacer, where he had started his international career in 1999, to quality top order batsman. In losing Styris, New Zealand loses an astute cricket brain, a fierce competitor and, at his best, a genuine match-winner.

Scholarship applicant’s dream may be realised By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim mother of four and newly established photographer Jody Percy is one of Marlborough’s AMP Scholarship applicants, and with only 18 days to go before judging closes she really needs your votes. She has entered into three AMP Scholarship categories, Regional, National and People’s Choice. There are two Regional Scholarships up for grabs for the Nelson/Marlborough region and one National Scholarship which can be awarded to any New Zealand resident. The People’s Choice Award is given to the applicant with the highest amount of votes, so the more votes Jody can get before July 17 the closer she can come to winning a $10,000 scholarship. The idea behind the scholarships is to give some extra help to someone with a community project, business idea, educational or a dream to represent the country. In Jody’s case, she is currently building up her business, Bear Photography and says winning a scholarship would really help her go further. “The money would help me to purchase and upgrade the photography equipment I already have, opening more doors and pushing me further toward my dream of fashion photography,” she says. Jody Percy’s inspiration to pursue photography was sealed by a kiss – quite literally! “I was photographing a friend’s wedding and captured a beautiful shot of them kissing on a beach, and it was looking back at that photo that inspired me to do more, so here I am,” she says. “Photography is a creative outlet for me and I want to take it all the way.
