Juliet takes Sun to Everest What an unusual sight, seeing the Sun newspaper being read on Mt Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,363m. But for locals Juliet Lindsay (pictured) and partner Duncan Carr it was the holiday experience of a lifetime. Juliet was given the option of holidaying anywhere in the world by Duncan. While he had his fingers crossed for Fiji, he did not expect Juliet to suggest Mt Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas. After 18 days of trekking, Juliet and Duncan have returned and share their experiences with Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk. “When I told Duncan where I really wanted to go, he nearly fell off his chair. “He honestly thought I would be happy with the likes of Fiji,” Juliet laughs. Juliet, Duncan and some of their friends spent weeks tramping prior to their trip in preparation for the arduous journey last month. Juliet also began fundraising prior to the trip for local charitable organisations Asthma Marlborough, Diabetes Marlborough and Alzheimers Marlborough. Continued Page 2.

Great heights for Juliet Continued from Page 1 To date she has raised $1000, and she is currently selling printed booklets featuring her daily diary and photographs taken during the trek for $20 each. This money will also be donated. As an asthmatic herself, trekking 5,364metres to Mt Everest Base Camp was a dream fulfilled for Juliet. Throughout the journey she experienced a whole new culture and religion as well as learning what the body goes through when climbing to a high altitude. Between them the couple endured nose bleeds, asthma attacks, severe blisters, upset stomachs, blocked noses and headaches. But aside from the physical side effects, the highlights proved a welcome distraction. “On day five we arrived at Phakding and that night I laid in bed watching heaps of lightning flashing across the rocky mountains, it looked like an outdoor laser show. “In Pangboche, 3,930m up, we stayed in some very interesting accommodation with animals living under us, including yaks. “The next day I observed ladies in the village picking up all the yak poo with bare hands for their fires,” she says. The luxury of using a working toilet was something Juilet says she missed during the trip. “I found the toilets quite horrifying but I slowly got used to them. “I became an expert at toileting without making any contact with them what so ever,” she jokes. As they approached Base Camp, Juliet described the area as a “hive of activity” with beautiful views. “Walking to Base Camp was hard to say the least. I found it hard just to drink water and trying to catch your breath when you’ve lost it was impossible,” she says. Now back at home, Juliet reflects on the trip. “I’m ecstatic we made the trip. I did find it hard as altitude and asthma don’t go well together. “My chest still feels irritated and my nose is still bleeding on and off, but overall it was an amazing trip,” she says. If anyone would like to order a copy of Juliet’s ‘Charity Trek to Everest Base Camp’ booklet, you can contact her at Skin Beautiful.
Juliet Lindsay's 'holiday' to Mt Everest Base Camp last month was the experience of a lifetime.

Teacher:Student ratio decision turn around Education Minister Hekia Parata decided yesterday not to make any change to teacher:student funding ratios, following decisions made in Budget 2012. She said the Government had listened to the concerns of parents, and is firmly focused on raising student achievement. “It has become apparent that these minor adjustments have caused a disproportionate amount of anxiety for parents, and that was never
our intention.” The changes to teacher:student funding ratios were to have saved the Government around $174 million over four years, of which $60 million was going to be invested in improving teaching quality and professional leadership. The Government will no longer be able to make that investment at this time. Simon Heath, principal at Renwick School, said they are all delighted with the U-turn decision.
He said the country had spoken, and parents in particular had voiced their discontent over the proposed bigger class sizes. “It’s a great example of mobilising the community to retain what’s right for their kids. If people had sat back and done nothing, it would have rolled.” Simon said it comes down to votes at the end of the day. “Good on the Government, they have admitted they made an error of judgement.”

they were very happy with the outcome. He said the $100,000 is only required for a full financial year. “The initial amount we get given is $60,000.” Because the incentive would start part way through the financial year, the $60,000 is all that is needed to get them there for now. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said most people appreciated that, this year, there was very limited room to move on requests for new spending. “Councillors have concentrated on those projects that have direct benefit to the community. We’ve taken a very prudent approach to what has proved to be essentially

New Zealand architect Peter Beaven died on Monday night at Blenheim hospital. The 86 year-old was diagnosed with cancer last year, and had moved to Blenheim from Christchurch after the earthquakes. He was awarded the New Zealand Institute of Architect’s Gold Medal in 2003.
A coroner has ruled that Rebecca Stockwell, 26, died of “severe brain trauma,” after she was hit by a boat in Fiji, in 2007. She and her husband Hayden Stockwell were snorkelling on their honeymoon in Fiji, off the beach of Matamanoa Island, when she was struck by the propeller of a 20 foot aluminium boat. Rebecca was a real estate agent from Blenheim, and the couple were three days into their honeymoon when the accident occurred.
Rates increase remains minimal The overall average rate increase across the region will be minimal, and a close eye will be kept on expenditure. This was the overall theme as Marlborough District Councillors considered the public submissions on the draft Long Term Plan this week. The overall average rate increase across the region for the year ahead can be held down to about 3.5%. Overall, few additions have been made to the expenditure already set out in the draft Plan. Councillors did agree to new spending of $60,000 in response to the Grow Marlborough Forum’s request to help fund a regional

an ‘infrastructure only’ budget,” he said. He said projects funded through new spending or from funds carried forward were those involving urgent work. Councillors will meet again at the end of this month to strike the rates for the next financial year. The following funds have also been allocated: Sport Tasman - $10,500. “Christmas in the Park” - $4000. Marlborough’s two emergency helicopters; the Life Flight Trust and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter - each received $10,000. The Awatere community hub and memorial hall - $48,000.

SCooTER CoRRECTIoN On Wednesday May 30 The Sun published an article stating that the two Harcourts teams taking part in the Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari last month raised $221,000 for the Cancer Society. This was incorrect. The Harcourts teams raised $1640, as part of the total $221,000 raised nationwide by the 250 scooter riders who travelled the 252 kilometres from Christchurch to Hokitika. Blair Newton, family member of Chris Greenhill from Harcourts, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2009, but the money raised on the safari was going directly to the Cancer Society, not to him. The Sun apologises for any confusion.

Besley to reapply for CEO job
inbrief
The Marlborough District Council’s chief executive role has been advertised since the end of May, and current CEO Andrew Besley has said he will be reapplying. “It was a pretty easy decision for me to make,” he said. “Blenheim’s my hometown.” Andrew started the job back in December 2000 and his current contract ends mid December this year.
Petrol Prices droP Petrol prices have dropped another 4c. BP and Z Energy reduced the price to about $2.12 for a litre of 91 on Tuesday. Other major companies are expected to follow suit.

He reapplied for the job back in 2005 as well. “I enjoy the job and there’s lots of challenges,” he said. The job has been his first role in local government. Mayor Alistair Sowman said the role has been advertised in the main daily newspapers around the country. The Mayor receives the applica-
tions and then determines which ones go forward to Council. A full Council then makes the final decision. He said the current CEO has a right to advertise that he is seeking to apply for the position. The CEO role must be advertised every seven years under the Local Government Act. Applications close June 22.

Salons taking the business back home By Robbie Parkes Blenheim has always had an abundance of hair salons, but many are now packing up and making shop at home. Romeo & Juliet Hair Salon owner Beth Gray is one of those business owners. She will be moving from her Charles St shop and into a home-based salon as of July this year. “We’ve been here for 10 years and it’s a lifestyle change for us,” she said. Everything came at once, some staff had left and their lease ran out, it was also time for a change. “Mostly it’s just a lifestyle change, I’ve got a young family at home.” “That’s why we’re doing it.” There were probably about 11 salons in town at the height of it all, and that didn’t include outside of the town area, she said. “There’s always been lots of salons in Blenheim.” Beth said there are only a few salons left, and it’s getting to the stage where there’s only a few left in town. “I know a lot of ladies who have set up at home just because they wanted

to work from home,” “It’s just hard going in town.” She said town has got quieter over the years in terms of business because of the economy. She said however, it is still feasible to be based in town. “You never hear of any salons shutting down.” “We’ve enjoyed being in town and that’s why we just won’t shut it.” Beth said it is about convenience really. But, she said the move isn’t cheap. There’s still the permits, the regulations and building consents. She will be working out of a converted garage/sleepout along with another of her staff members. “It’s the same thing, it’s still a professional salon.” And, there’s no overheads, which she said is one of the biggest appeals. Urban Hair Design and hairdresser romeo & Juliet Hair salon owner Beth Gray is making the move to a home-based operation. Arthur Devine have both made the move from town to homebased operations.

Snow a rare event
By Annabelle Latz Snow fell in Blenheim just five times between 1932 and 1980. Records are taking a turn, with snow falling here in two consecutive years. The ground was too warm for Wednesday night’s dump to settle, but the white covering on many cars yesterday morning was strong evidence that it had tried its best. “I was disappointed I could not go out and make my snowman yesterday morning,” said Rob
Agnew, Liaison Scientist for Plant and Food Research. He said because it has to be overcast before it snows, the air temperature can be warmer than the usual frosts the area regularly receives during winter. “It felt very cold, but when we have a clear night with frost, it’s a lot colder, which is interesting.” On August 15 2011, snow fell in Blenheim between 2pm and 5pm. It did not settle then either in the town, but left its mark on the Wither Hills.
The town is protected from many of the snow storms, because of the Inland Kaikoura Range and the hills in the south. “ T he snow on We d nesd ay was an extremely rare event in Blenheim,” he said. Rob said there is no way of knowing what the rest of the winter holds in terms of how much white stuff will come. “Even the climate scientists say it’s very difficult to make predictions.”
Michael Hyson took this photo at his property in the Waihopai Valley at 8am on Thursday morning. His dog Gyp Gyp wasn’t too impressed at being left out in the snow.

Marina Cove Apartments travel around New Zealand, to visit family, friends, and explore places they have never been to. “We would be quite happy using it up around here.” New World Blenheim owner-operator, Andrea Boock rang Alison last month to deliver the news. “We were thrilled, and so was she.” Andrea said winners of some Fly Buys competitions sometimes forget they enter. “So it pays to swipe your card. It’s nice for the community to see there are winners.” The competition ran at New World stores nationwide from April 16 to 29.

GOOD READ Hi i like to read the Sun, it has a lot in it and it is free.
BAD SERVICE Agree with Jen rega rding SNOBS. I worked and shopped in Knightsbridge and Kensington for over 20 years and was never looked down on or been rude to like the staff from a certain big retail clothes and ware shop in Blenheim. Some friends have said the same to me about their experience here too. Really bad customer service yet again! SD
MILK FORMULA I gave birth to a baby girl and we have been using S26 baby formula rite up until this wednesday. We couldn’t figure out why baby was not drinking only to find out when we rung the company that makes the milk powder that we found out they had changed the formula which gave our daughter a crook tummy. They have not put the change of it on the can to let people know! So how many mothers out there are having this problem?

Cut MPs not teachers Dear Ed, The cutbacks to teachers by English and Key is disgraceful. Education is one of the best investments a country can make. But I have a better way to save money and it is needed. Cut the number of MPs to 100. Put MPs onto the same superannuation scheme as the public.

Taskforce to help councils Local Government Minister David Carter has announced an independent taskforce to help build greater efficiency within the local government framework. The eight-member taskforce is one of the initiatives outlined in the Better Local Government reform programme announced earlier this year.
The Taskforce will be chaired by Auckland environmental and public law specialist, Michael Holm. Other members are Kerry Prendergast, former Mayor of Wellington; Michael Barnett, Chief Executive of Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry; Bill Bayfield,
Chief Executive of Environment Canterbury; Stephen Parry, Chief Executive of Gore District Council; Pamela Peters, former Mayor of Whangarei; Debbie Packer, former Deputy Mayor of South Taranaki District Council; and Vanessa van Uden, Mayor of Queenstown Lakes.
DEW - correction On 23 May 2012 we published an article that said David Dew owes creditors BNZ $6.8 million and that this had been revealed in a recent National Business Review article. In fact, this money is owed by companies directed and owned by Mr Dew and not him personally. The Sun accepts the correct position is that Mr
Dew has guaranteed some company debts but that the amount of a shortfall, if any, is unknown at this stage. Further, PGG Wrightson, mentioned in a letter to the editor as a creditor, has been fully repaid. The Sun regrets this error and apologises to Mr Dew.”

School technology is about working together By Annabelle Latz The classroom environment is an extension of the dynamic world that surrounds today’s society. Andrew Read, Bohally Intermediate principal, will be meeting with representatives from a number of regional schools later this month, to discuss the next step in the plan for pupils having their own devices for internet access. “It’s about consistency and collaboration,” he said. Devices like iPads, Tablets and Notebooks are becoming a normal part of the classroom Principal at Bahally Intermediate Andrew Read with pupil Seth environment, assisting in all Robinson, using a device that is increasingly an everyday tool areas of learning. “We are now the producers in the classroom. of learning, not just consumers.” Andrew said the aim is for schools t h roug hout t he region to work together, discussing requirements from pupils, families and schools, in terms of what devices are best, that can be used throughout a school career. “We really want to support the community in this; it’s the next step for next paradigm of technology.”
Andrew said families are largely supportive of schools encouraging technology in this manner, as a compliment to all learning, and that many parents themselves use the same technology. “Parents are more aware of education in general, they appreciate the world is changing, and that schools acknowledge this change.” He admitted some families may struggle to find the funds for devices. Schools will still provide technology facilities, and possible lease deals will also be discussed. “We will try and make it affordable.” Bohally has been part of the Ministry of Education’s ICT cluster since 2009 with other schools in Marlborough, due to formally terminate at the end of the year. “We are determined we will still be getting together, we have enjoyed the collaboration, and we believe it’s one of the key reasons the New Zealand education system is so good.” Lee Harper, owner of PC Media in Blenheim, said there are many payment options when purchasing devices, such as Q-Card and Flexi-Rent, with minimal interest. “There are those sorts of options out there,” he said.

Queen swept off her feet The Queen was literally swept off her feet last Friday at Waterlea Rest Home’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Mary Webber and Harold Heffer were crowned ‘King and Queen’ for the day, the result of an in-house competition. They received Royal treatment throughout the day, including diamond adorned f lowers and chocolates, a banquet lunch with fine china, silver cutlery with a bottle of wine, and a crowning ceremony; all completed with
thrones. Staff had worked behind the scenes earlier in the week secretly discovering the royals’ favourite morning tea and pre dinner drinks, which was duly served, much to their surprise. The day concluded with a royal dance to the music of Pam and Terry Price. Ferrero Rocher jewels were served on a royal velvet cushion as part of the Happy Hour celebration, and residents and staff entered into the spirit by wearing their most sparkling jewellery and outfits.

Muscles from Brussels? Images of martial artist and Hollywood actor Jean-Claude Van Damme’s muscular body may be conjured up when thinking of the term ‘Muscles from Brussels’. But in reality this term could be applied to something quite different – a tiny, cute little cabbage which can easily be grown in the home vegetable garden. This hardy little vegetable is rich in vitamins C and E, fibre, folate and a good source of other B group vitamins. They also supply small, but significant amounts of calcium, iron, potassium and phosphorus. Brussels Sprouts are members of the Brassica family and are in general easy to grow. Mid winter is the time that many home gardeners will be harvesting their crops, however it is still a good time to be preparing the soil in preparation for planting your seedlings. Harvesting and storing: Pick when the sprouts are small,
the leaves are tight and firm. Harvesting standard varieties after frost improves the taste. Pick the lower sprouts first. You can encourage sprouts at the top of the plant to swell by removing the cabbage-like head. Cooking tips: Before steaming or boiling Brussels Sprouts cut across into the stem end of each sprout to ensure they cook right through. However, if you want them to be crunchy or firm, don’t do this. Planning a new crop: Sprouts grow well only in fertile and reasonably limey soil. They need a cool to cold climate to perform at their best. Dig in compost together with blood and bone, then spread lime over the surface. A 3m row of plants should yield approximately 7.5kg of sprouts.

Creamy Bacon and Brussels sprout soup This is the perfect way to eat sprouts. Even people who claim they hate Brussels sprouts love this soup! Serves 6 Ingredients: 500g Brussels sprouts 2 Tb olive oil 1 onion 8 rashers bacon 2 cloves garlic 4 cups (1L) chicken stock
1/3 cup (80ml) cream salt and black pepper Trim sprouts, removing the woody ends and any tough outer leaves. Cut in half and wash well. Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Cook sprouts for about 3 mins until tender. Strain and plunge into cold water to stop them cooking.
Drain. Heat olive oil in a frying pan. Cook diced onion and bacon until tender (about 10mins). Add sprouts and simmer for a further 5 mins. Add crushed garlic and stock, and cook for 10 more minutes until sprouts are tender. Using a blender puree half the soup, leaving the remainder
Tips chunky for extra body. Add cream and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return to the boil to reheat.

The world’s largest flower measures up to 3 feet across and weighs close to 15 pounds! Rafflesia arnoldii grows in the rainforests of Indonesia. It is a
parasitic plant which uses a host plant to gather water and nutrients. Though beautiful to behold, the bloom has an odour similar to that of rotting meat.

SOIL TERMINOLOGY • Compost: The decomposed remains of plants. Though it is low in nutrients, it’s rich in humus and beneficial critters. • Drip Line: The area on the ground below where the outer branches of a tree or shrub extend. It’s the best place to direct water or fertilise. • Earthing Up: Piling up soil around vegetable plants to increase yield. Spuds produce more tubers if they are buried deeper as they grow. • Humus: Rotted-down plant material. The principal ingredient in compost, leaf mould and peat. Humus is important as it acts like a sponge in the soil, holding water during dry times. • Mulch: Anything you spread over the soil to discourage weed growth and prevent water evaporating. Pebble mulches last forever, while bark breaks down. For a cheap DIY mulch, use grass clippings laid on cardboard or sheets of newspaper. • Organic: If it is, or ever was, alive, it’s classed as organic. Includes rotten plant material, vege scraps and leaves. All contain carbon, the stuff of life. Therefore all compost is by nature organic, though bags of “organic compost” are made using organic (spray-free) ingredients.

Hill Laboratories confirmed this week that its purchase agreement with the Cawthron Institute, originally announced on 16 March, is now unconditional. As part of the sale, Cawthron’s wine and microbiological testing services provided from its Blenheim offices will be transferred to Hill Laboratories. Additionally, Cawthron’s environmental chemistry testing division, previously located in Nelson, has been amalgamated into Hill Laboratories’ environmental testing division. No Cawthron staff members at either site were made redundant as part of the acquisition. For Hill Laboratories, the purchase provides an opportunity
to strengthen two key areas of its business – wine and environmental testing. “Hill Labs recently launched our Vine to Vintage wine testing service from our new wine lab in Christchurch. They are now the only laboratory in New Zealand offering every test a winery requires – from vineyard to finished wine - under one roof. Acquiring Cawthron’s export certification testing business allows us to strengthen our services to our wine industry customers even further, while providing us with an excellent base in Marlborough wine country says Dr Hill. “Acquiring Cawthron’s environmental testing also fits well
with Hills, as it is one of our company’s core capabilities. We are committed to growing our environmental testing laboratory in Christchurch, which now employs a large number of staff members. The Cawthron Institute will continue to operate from its headquarters in Nelson. The Institute has refocused its business to concentrate on supporting the food and functional food industries by facilitating access for food products to local and international markets. It is also maintaining its core microbiology services for both environmental and food testing.

The finalists covered areas such as improving water and air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing waste, and boosting biodiversity by protecting coasts and oceans. The Supreme Award went to Auckland-based winery Villa Maria Estate.

By Annabelle Latz Fraser Avery describes himself as a proactive farmer, not a reactive one. He is heading up north to the Mystery Creek Fieldays in Hamilton next week; a great opportunity to see what is new on the market, and catch up with people he does not see too often. In 2009 the 32 year-old farmer from Grassmere made his first trip up to the event since his childhood. His family property, Bonavaree, where he farms sheep, beef, has mixed crop and does dairy grazing, was part of a display for Farmax that year, a software based system for planning and controlling farming systems. The farm was also featured at a site with MAF. “I thought it would be nice to be there when that was on display.” Daily farming methods for him and his father Doug have seen significant changes in recent years on the 1600ha farm. “We spend a lot of our time monitoring and recording. That sort of thing has become a much bigger part of farming, and we have really embraced that in recent years.” His last visit to Fieldays also provided a chance for him to gather good ideas for a new cattle facility he was building. “It’s so big, there’s such a range of stalls in display, and it caters

for everything.” One of the biggest changes over the years for Fraser has been the widening rural urban split. He said the Fieldays always has a good mix of both communities. “I saw lots of urban people, they were having a great time.” This year when he heads up with his wife Shelley, leav-
ing their two young children behind, he is looking forward to just having a few days off the farm. “It’s the networking too, and seeing the industry leaders. I always come home with such a buzz.” Mystery Creek Fieldays runs from Wednesday June 13 until Saturday June 16.

Cook Strait whale survey to begin Former whalers and Department of Conservation researchers are again about to scour the Cook Strait sea for whales as the ninth winter whale survey in the area gets underway on June 9. The Cook Strait Whale Survey assesses humpback whale recovery since commercial whaling ended in New Zealand in 1964. It will run for four weeks until
July 7. Based on Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds, the research team counts whales passing through Cook Strait as they make their annual migration north from Antarctic waters to South Pacific breeding grounds. Seven former whalers have been part of the research project since it began in 2004.
The survey is sponsored by OMV New Zealand Limited. Members of the public can assist the survey by reporting sightings of whales in the Cook Strait area or travelling up the coast from Kaikoura. Sightings can be reported to DOC’s Picton office on 03 520 3002.

An evening with Chief Inspector GARY RAYMOND Inspector Gary Raymond, one of Australia's toughest, most respected policemen, is a 'hands-on' law enforcer. His familiar profile on the streets has led people to call him the 'Sheriff of Cabramatta'. He was a success, becoming part of an elite Police Rescue team that most only dream about joining. As a member of the Police Rescue Squad, Gary performed over 1,500 rescues including 1,000 motor vehicle collision rescues, 200 cliff rescues, and 200 suicide negotiations at heights such as cliffs, buildings, bridges, roofs and towers. He also performed industrial and domestic rescues. He conducted searches both on land, air and sea whilst working as crew on the police helicopter. Gary has also performed duty at numerous siege and barricade situations as well. Gary attended and dealt with many identified explosive devices. So the storey goes on.

• Rain, snow and hail is formed when cloud droplets or ice particles in clouds grow and combine to become so large that their fall speed exceeds the updraft speed in the cloud, and fall out of the cloud.
• Ice crystals are formed when air temperature decreases with height, and the amount of water vapour that air can hold is proportional to the temperature.
• Snow falls in winter, but snowflakes form throughout the year. Most of the rain that falls in middle latitudes, even in summer, is melted snow.
• It is always raining somewhere on the Earth. At any given time, precipitation covers about 2% to 5% of the Earth’s surface, while evaporation is occurring over the remaining 95% to 98% of the Earth.

Thrills and spills at motocross By Annabelle Latz Motocross action at Queen’s Birthday weekend delivered a track that kept the riders thinking. With a few spills thrown in too. A dozen r iders from Marlborough headed down to North Canterbury for the Michael Godfrey Memorial Motocross in Omihi last Saturday and Sunday. The group included five riders in the MX2 section, two in the MX1 class, two in the ladies class, and five riders in the veterans class. Shannon Hewitson in the MX1 section ended up the worst off out of the group on the injury front; he was one of nine riders at the competition flown to Christchurch Hospital, after suffering broken
bones and minor punctures to both lungs, from an accident in Sunday’s feature race. Earlier that day he took fourth place in the MX1 class. Paul Pudney, riding his Kawasaki KXF 250, said it was a great weekend, with 300 riders coming from all over New Zealand, and Australiabased kiwi riders coming back especially for the weekend of riding, the 29th Memorial event. He said the track was at a great standard, with good tests like hill jumps, stutters and wave sections. “It was challenging, but not dangerous.” They rode five races each, and Paul finished 32nd in the MX2 section. “It wasn’t your standard track, but it was fun.”

Grant helps gymnast with international goals By Robbie Parkes After receiving $1000 to make her dreams come true, Blenheim gymnast Anna Tempero (right) is eyeing up her next international competition. Anna was one of five recipients of Harcourts Marlborough’s Make Dreams Come True Initiative. There were over 80 entries, and each applicant was asked to write one page as to why they, or their affiliated organisation should get the grant. The seventeen year-old wrote that she wanted to represent New Zealand at the highest level that she possibly could. “When I applied I didn’t think I’d actually get it,” she said. “It’ll help heaps with travel.” Anna has competed in the international gymnastics scene before, once in Chicago and twice while in Hawaii. “It’s really exciting,” she said. In Chicago, she came first in her age group, then in Hawaii she came third in one competition and second in the other. Anna said they did a lot of fundraising for those trips and she hopes to use the money to travel to the USA for another competition next year. She said her parents have been really supportive through it all. Anna started out doing gymnastics at kindy but didn’t like it at first. “I think I just decided to go back again one day and It just grew on me.” Now in her 12th year of gymnastics, Anna said she has enjoyed it more and more as she moved into the higher levels of it.

“Ever since I could, I’ve been to the nationals.” She hasn’t competed in any secondary school events and said that gymnastics is quite small in Blenheim. But, she’s hoping to make the 2012 National Gymsport Championships which will be held here later in the year. “It’s really cool,” she said. She trains 11 hours a week with coaches Erica Ticehurst and Tony Quirk. Anna said there are some pretty good gymnastics schools down in Christchurch but she doesn’t know if she’ll go down that road yet. She said doing gymnastics as a profession is on the cards, but it’s just a matter of how to do it. “We don’t really know the pathway to get into it, but it would be good to step it up a level.”
