By Damian George Ma rlborough viticulturist Allan Scott says he was “a little bit embarrassed” to be named in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours List on Monday. The founder of Allan Scott Family Winemakers was Allan Scott named a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to viticulture, one of five Marlburians honoured in this year’s list. The others to be recognised were John Roadley, for services to the dairy industry, Ivan Sutherland, for services to rowing and viticulture, Yvonne Dasler, for services to the community, Paul Ellis for services to the entertainment industry and Dr John Hellstrom, for services to biosecurity, and Paul Ellis, for services to the entertainment industry. “It’s one of those funny things, I didn’t really have the option of accepting or not,” Allan says. “I was a little bit embarrassed, but I took it more as an industry thing, rather than a personal thing.” The Allan Scott winery was set up in 1973, and, along with his other industry and community involvements, has kept him pretty busy over the last 38 years. Officer honoured for Iroquois heroics By Damian George Former Woodbourne Air Force Base instructor Darren Smith has been named in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his heroic efforts following the fatal Iroquois crash on Anzac Day last year. Acting Warrant Officer Smith, now based at Ohakea, was the first man on the scene after the crash and located the sole survivor, Sergeant Stevin Iain Creeggan. He was then able to safely get Mr Creeggan on a Westpac Rescue Helicopter and out of the crash site. Three men were killed when the air force helicopter crashed at Pukerua Bay, north of Wellington, while on its way to a flypast in Wellington on the morning of Anzac Day. Due to the trauma of the incident, Mr Smith is not available for comment but a spokesperson for The Royal New Zealand Air Force paid tribute to his efforts. “It’s always fantastic for one of our people to be recognised for their actions and probably even more so in this case because it involved people in his own squadron,” the spokesperson says. “It was a very hard thing for him to deal with on the day, the training just kicked in and he just did what he needed to do.” Mr Smith received the New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration (DSD) when the honours list was announced on Monday. Push for Easter Trading exemption By Damian George The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce is looking into applying for a local exemption to Easter Trading laws in order for businesses to capatalise on visitor numbers during the biennial Classic Fighters Airshow. Marlborough Chamber of Commerce general manager Brian Dawson says the possibility will be explored in response to pleading from retailers to be allowed to open at least every second Easter. “25,000 people went to the airshow this year, and shops were closed for two-and-a-half of the four days it was on, with thousands of extra people in town,” Mr Dawson says. “It should be people’s right to open, particularly on a four-day weekend when people are looking to do things and are looking for an opportunity to shop.”

Oldest TV unearthed In last week’s Sun we ran a story about Marlborough woman Julie Dash entering her black and white National Transistor IC portable television in the oldest TV in NZ competition. “I bought it in a second-hand shop in Nelson about ten years ago,” she says. “I owned an art deco house and thought it was pretty retro-looking and went well with the house which was a bonus.” Mrs Dash says she researched the age of her television online, and it found it to be from the 1980s. Still, it was not quite as old as the television that won the competition. A 53-year-old television from the West Coast has been unearthed as the country’s oldest working TV set. The DIY kitset TV beat almost 300 entries to win the Going Digital Oldest Telly competition, which was launched to prove that New Zealanders don’t need a new TV to go digital. The winning set was converted to digital on Friday June`3 and the original owner of the TV, 92-year-old Elva Reynolds of Hokitika, was announced as the winner on Fridays Breakfast Show on TV1. The set was assembled by her husband, the late Winston Reynolds, the former mayor of Hokitika in 1958, the same year Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South

Road lesson targets older drivers By Damian George Indicator use and roundabout rules will be two of the major issues addressed during the Marlborough Road Safety Council’s driving course for older drivers on Tuesday. The council runs the free tutorials four times a year with the aim of improving road awareness among older people. Marlborough Road Safety Council president Nigel Perry says the threehour course is a chance for people to brush up on their knowledge. “We decided a lot of older people need some sort of instruction to be able to drive their vehicles safely and to get on the road with the amount of traffic that’s ever-increasing,” he says. “A lot of people a re not quite sure what the indicator use is for,

particularly going though roundabouts.” Mr Perry says a number of drivers are indicating right when going straight through a roundabout, which can cause confusion among other road users. Another grey area among the age-group is the rules surrounding pedestrian crossings, he says. “There’s some misjudgement about pedestrian Nigel Perry crossings and when people are allowed to cross and when they can drive on.” Mr Perry says there is a common misconception that drivers must stop for pedestrians at courtesy crossings when, in fact, motorists have the right

Blenheim-Picton link service underway By Damian George Blenheim school students attending Picton’s Queen Charlotte College now have a more “sensible” commuting option thanks to the launch of a private bus service which came into effect today. The daily Blenheim to Picton service, run by Marlborough Vintners Hotel director Graham Lindsay, will enable students to get to and from the college at times much closer to school operating hours than the current bus service. “This is not a school bus; this is a general service initiated because of the need to get school kids over at a more sensible time for them and their parents than the school bus leaves,” Mr Lindsay says. Operating on a trial basis at the moment, the service will shave off nearly nearly two hours of total wait time daily for those who commute by bus. Mr Lindsay says the service will also provide one-way transport for Picton school childen in years seven and eight who attend St Mary’s School in Blenheim. A daily bus service between Blenheim and Renwick had earlier been offered by Mr Lindsay, driven by rising fuel costs, but received little public response as fuel prices began to drop again recently. However, the proposal was the catalyst for the Blenheim-Picton service, he says. “It drew attention to the fact that the bus was available and now, potentially, it’s going to fix the transport problem between Blenheim and Picton.” Marlborough district councillor Jessica Bagge, who approached Mr Lindsay with the idea of using the 19-seat vehicle, says she has been lobbying for a regular service since late 2009.

I had to get my car repaired and that bill reduced me to tears!

Mine would have to be the Optometrist. Every time it just seems to be expensive.

We just bought a villa at Springlands Lifestyle Village so there are a lot of bills with that. Other than that - groceries and electricity are the most expensive.

The Dentist. You don’t expect it to be that much, but when you go to pay, it’s a big shock. Considering sometimes you are not there very long.

It would have to be my phone bill. We went over the limit on the internet. We got the bill and got a surprise!.

Dear Ed, With the Ministry of Transport lowering the speed limit tolerance to 4 km/hr, perhaps they could lower the truck tolerance speed to zero, to stop trucks dangerously going at 99km/hr. The 99 km/hr forces motorists into passing at 110-115 km/hr to get around the trucks. In that way, I got a ticket while the truckie got off scot-free. Safety First

Dear Ed, Jeff Williams seems to like ranting a fair bit doesn’t he? Nothing and no-one is good enough for his lofty standards. Ironically, he’ll just put more people off the Bible with his negative comments. Here’s a tip Jeff: Pick a scripture every week, and focus on the positive aspects, principles and practical applications of that scripture.

No-one wants to hear about the bones you’ve got to pick with other religious groups. It’s a pointless battle, and not your fight anyway. (Please read Matthew 7:21-23, Luke 6:37, and Acts 5:38, 39.) Please give the reader something positive to take away with them. The Bible has great practical advice for daily life - let’s hear some of it! C H Ristian

Hear the truth Dear Ed, Mr Williams (Bible Baptist) has now defamed or lied about the Revival Centres International (RCI) on 5 or 6 occasions. Are they allowed to use ‘paid space’ to do this? I find it rather alarming. The RCI is a happy group of people who have received the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues, as in the early church. I know the Bible Baptists are opposed to this; despite it being THE experience that identified the church in the Bible. They are obviously entitled to their views; but to deliberately use ‘paid space’ to ridicule others is sad and

unchristian. Aren’t there Advertising Standards that people must adhere to? We use our paid advertisement to promote the Gospel message, not to try and bring someone else down. As Editor; what do you think? Isn’t it your duty to vet their articles? If you do nothing, then so be it; I will not ask you about this again; as I would rather be promoting the gospel than having to constantly defend our good name and integrity. You can direct a complaint to them at the Advertising Standards Complaints Board (ASCB). www.asa.co.nz/how_to_make_a_complaint There are very few complaints received on this topic. Most complaints centre around consumer products, liquor, and health and beauty advertising. However should a competing retail advertiser start knocking a competitor without facts we would not accept this type of advertising. I do have a liking for BK Hawaiian burgers. I decided to treat myself three times since BK opened in Blenheim. Sadly the experience hasn’t been good. First trip a 35 minute wait and the chips I ordered were a very small serving for a large fries and only warm. Second visit their toaster broke down and a thirty minute wait, fortunately a nice young man made me aware before ordering, so I walked out. Now my third visit Monday at 4.25pm, only one order in front of me waiting. But again a long wait, 25 minutes and again the large fries at $2.95 a very small serving and not even filled up with chips and again only warm, and to cap the experience off, the icecream machine had broken down. Only positive I didn’t have to consume too many calories. So far BK a poor effort, especially with your fries. For a national chain you need to get it right before you open. BK Hawaiian Fan

Master of the arts Kurt Graham talks to Damian George about his calling to the martial arts lifestyle, training in Japan and why there’s no place like home.

When you walk into martial art guru Kurt Graham’s house, you will be politely asked to take off your shoes. Once you have done this, you will walk into a house which will most likely be unlike any other house you have ever entered. This is because you are not so much walking into a house, as you are into a shrine; a collection of a life’s work, study and passion. The walls are lined with any number of authentic knives and other weaponry and memorabilia from all over the globe, protected by a state-of-theart security system. Floor mats and furniture coverings are mostly animal skins, ranging from springboks to tigers. Nothing in the house, it seems, does not hold some sort of significance or importance. Now you understand why you were asked to take off your shoes. Such a custom is one of many which reflects the ‘holistic martial arts’ lifestyle which Kurt leads - neatness, tidiness, order. “I got into martial arts when I was six,” he says. “People often ask me what got me into it – I can’t really explain it. There are forces in this world beyond us. “I was either a) driven to it or b) lived it in a previous life.” Kurt began his travels to fulfil his martial arts dreams at 17, when he went to Tokyo to study martial arts on a two-year scholarship. Since then, he has trained under some of the most respected names in the martial arts world and is one of the most qualified teachers on the planet. He has too many degrees to men-

tion, but, at just 38 years of age, is believed to be the only person to be a ‘master’ of three separate martial arts. He was graded a sixth Dan Kyoshi in Karate this month, and has achieved a seventh Dan Kyoshi licence in aiki ju jitsu and eight Dan Mastership in Filipino martial arts. The most gruelling of all Kurt’s experiences though, he says, came via his two years of training with the Japanese riot police from 1992 to 1993. “I had the absolute s*** kicked out of me on a daily basis,” he says. “We had to go and change our uniforms in between sessions ‘cause there was so much blood on them. “At the time, I just thought it was cruel and unusual punishment, but I realise the merits of it now. You can’t break me now, there is nothing you can throw at me that I haven’t had thrown at me.” He was also a personal body guard for Michael Jackson in the Philippines during the pop star’s History world tour in 1997. Despite all his travels, Kurt says there are only two countries he could live in - Australia and New Zealand. “People have no idea how good we have it here.” Speaking with a lifetime’s worth of martial arts study under his belt, Kurt explains there are five reasons

why people take it up - fitness, selfdefence, competition, business and, like Kurt, lifestyle. “There’s no point going into the dojo [training room] for two hours and hitting the hell out of a punching bag and then forgetting about everything else as soon as you step out,” he says. “We’re the people that have to sort of carry the mantle.” After completing a photo shoot, Kurt then meticulously folds his martial arts attire and puts it away, with all the precision and discipline you now come to expect from a martial arts master.

Now that bride entries have officially closed for the 2011 Blenheim Beavertown Lions Bride of the Year Show, it is time to hurry and get your tickets, says organiser Carol Taylor. “Tickets are selling fast people so make sure you get in quick before they all sell out,” she stresses. Brides have this year responded even more enthusiastically than last and with the final entries being counted, Carol estimates the number of brides entered to be close to 25 - a number higher than last year.

“We have had a fantastic response from so many beautiful brides, it is going to be one of our best shows yet.” This year’s show format, adopted after feedback from previous shows is also proving popular, evident by the strong ticket sales. Taking on a more professional approach, the show will have a live performance by singer David Brooks, who will perform while the votes are being counted. Ticket holders will be given a complimentary glass of wine on entry. They will also have access to a fully stocked

Drunken behaviour leads to arrest Two unemployed men, aged 17 and 24, were arrested for disorderly behaviour on Tuesday afternoon after allegedly abusing members of the public on the Taylor River Reserve. The 17-year-old man was also arrested for urinating in public. Police say the men had been drinking. Earlier, a 14-year-old man was arrested in relation to two Riversdale burglaries which occurred early last month. At 2.55pm, a 38-year-old man was arrested for possession of cannabis.

Knife-wielding man arrested A 37-year-old male sickness beneficiary was arrested on Wednesday morning for possession of a knife following a domestic incident in Riversdale on May 31. The man was also charged with breaching a police safety order. He was remanded in custody and was due to appear in court on Thursday. Earlier, a 27-year-old unemployed man was arrested for a historic burglary at a Nelson property on May 10. At 10am, a 16-year-old male student was arrested for assaulting his mother during a domestic incident in Witherlea. He has been referred to Youth Aid. Half an hour later, a 42-year-old male logger was arrested for wilful damage after he allegedly slashed a car’s tyres following a domestic incident in Havelock on May 25. At 5.30pm, an 18-year-old male student was arrested after allegedly trying to hit

a member of his family with a chair in Springcreek. Shortly after, a 19-year-old female salesperson was arrested for assault following an incident at a licensed premises on May 29.

Violence and assaults in Blenheim At 6.30am, a 44-year-old male painter was arrested for breaching his bail curfew. At 8.15pm, a 24-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for damaging a deck chair at a Maxwell Road address.

Wilful damage A 37-year-old unemployed man was arrested for wilful damage and disorderly behaviour after allegedly damaging a window at a house on Alabama Road on Saturday evening. At 4.35pm, a 32-year-old male driver was arrested for breaching his community work. An hour later, a 21-year-old male was arrested for breaching his bail conditions, namely not residing at his bail address. At 9.40pm, an 18-year-old male student was arrested for disorderly behaviour. At 11.50pm, a 41-year-old female beneficiary was arrested for wilful damage and possession of cannabis.

“The NZ Transport Agency is thanking New Zealand drivers for a holiday weekend free of deaths on our roads.” “It’s a fantastic result, and New Zealand drivers have shown that a fatality-free holiday on the roads is possible,” NZTA spokesperson Andy Knackstedt says. Mr Knackstedt said the zero road toll for Queen’s Birthday weekend continues an encouraging downward trend for 2011, with road deaths down 35% compared to the same time last year (from 186 to 121). “Fatalities and serious injuries from road crashes don’t have to be an accepted part of driving on New Zealand roads, during long weekends or any other time. “The NZTA, police and others are working hard to create a safer environment, and drivers deserve credit for doing their part by taking responsibility for their own actions and driving to the conditions.” Mr Knackstedt says while higher fuel prices could reduce road travel and influence driver behaviour, the 35% decline in road deaths this year was well in excess of the roughly two percent decline in traffic volumes recorded on state highways.

Assault in Redwoodtown A 23-year-old male arborist was arrested for assaulting a 24-year-old man at a house in Redwoodtown early Sunday morning. At the same time, a 26-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for offensive behaviour. At 3.45am, a 22-year-old female hairdresser was arrested for offensive behaviour, as was a 22-year-old male diesel mechanic five minutes later. At 8.30pm, an 18-year-old female general hand was arrested for drives while disqualified, drink driving and failing to stop for police.

At 9pm, a 19-year-old male fisherman was arrested for breaching the liquor ban.

Knife-related arrest A 22-year-old unemployed man who was holding a knife was arrested for assault after an incident at a house in Picton on Monday evening. At 12am on Monday, a 20-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for fighting in a public place. Shortly after, a 23-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail curfew. At 2.55pm, a 29-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Gearing up for Open Day The journey toward merging Alabama Road Vet Clinic and the Marlborough Vet Services began two and a half years ago, and today directors David Sim, Nick Hansby and Rob Ander are proud to announce their amalgamated practice - Vets on Alabama. Construction and refurbishments are now complete and staff are looking forward to their official Open Day, Sunday June 12 from 11:30am-2pm. In April 2010 construction began and the facility was extended to the east, west and north which has close to doubled the floor space. Eager to show off the newly refurbished facility, David Sim took the Sun on a guided tour through the practice, pointing out a new consultation room, extended work room and retail area, added office upstairs and extensions to ‘Sally’s Grooming’ work space. “We felt it made sense to amalgamate the two practices and geographically we felt Vets on Alabama enables our vets to provide a more efficient service. “In addition, by having two acres of land this facility enables people to bring their animals to us to be treated over a

day or more which is a huge benefit,” he says. At Vets On Alabama, there are now five vets who each work in areas of special interest. Ben Dallas and Katalin Banyay work with companion animals, Nick Hansby and Rob Ander with production animals, and David Sim with equine. Another advantage of the amalgamation was being able to purchase more specialised equipment. “You get better use of equipment with a group of vets rather than just one, so we are really happy to be able to take advantage of this situation. “This also means we can diagnose and deal with problems all in one place which is better for the animal and convenient for its owner,” David says. Those who have been involved with the refurbishment of Vets on Alabama will be formally thanked on the Open Day,

Since our beer is brewed using traditional costly, inefficient and labour intensive techniques, in order to produce more Moa beer we need more labour. Q – John 19:20 says that the sign on the cross over Jesus head was written in three languages – there is no doubt about the Greek and Latin, but why do some Bibles say the third language was Hebrew and others say that it was Aramaic? Which is right? (CS – Wellington) A – Hebrew

Walnut cracking and food tasting were just a few of the many activities organised at Riverlands School Harvest Friday last week. The day was in celebration of Arbor Day and World Environment Day and saw students hold a number of stalls to help raise money for their edible garden. There were Afghan biscuit icing, muffins for sale, food tasting, count the walnuts in a

jar and walnut animals being sold to students and teachers. Many of the activities were co-ordinated by the school’s Today and Beyond (TAB) students. Money raised will go toward on going costs of the edible garden and for the development of a hangi area and native plantings. Edible garden facilitator Joanna Hepburn says students have shown great enthusiasm

toward the garden since it was implemented in November last year. “We have been lucky to have had the support of the Marlborough District Council in getting this garden up and running which has taught students everything from sowing and planting through to picking and healthy eating. “It has been exciting for the children to have hands on learning,” she says.

If you have a Bible that says Aramaic instead of Hebrew, then you don’t have a Bible, but a counterfeit! We might as well get it right out in the open at the start that the New International Version is probably the culprit you are referring to as almost all English translations except the NIV read “Hebrew” in this passage instead of “Aramaic.” Abraham was a Hebrew – his descendants through Isaac and Jacob are called the Hebrews and their language is called Hebrew. Hebrew is specifically called “the Jew’s language” five times In scripture. Just as circumcision, the Sabbath and the OT law were given to the Jews by God to make them separate from all the people of the earth, so was their language. The whole point of the day of Pentecost and the miraculous gift of speaking in tongues was to show the Jews that God could work in Gentile (non-Hebrew) languages and thus had a plan for the Gentile nations – this becomes rather absurd if the Hebrews aren’t speaking Hebrew. The NIV is grossly in error on this point – in fact, this version pretty much goes through the entire NT and changes most of the references to the Hebrew language into Aramaic – the NIV even has Jesus speaking to Paul FROM HEAVEN in Aramaic! (Acts 26:14) There is no manuscript evidence for these changes as the Greek NT clearly uses the Greek word for “Hebrew” (Hebrais or Hebraisiti) in these verses –the NIV in fact translates “hebrais” as “Hebrew” in some verses and “Aramaic” in others! Why all this drama? 1) The devil is in the business of corrupting and undermining the words of God (Gen. 3:1-6) – any confusion or error works to his advantage. 2) Liberal scholarship has long since refused to accept God’s word at face value – like their “father” (John 8:44) they question and undermine scripture. Academia believes Jesus spoke Aramaic and in the NIV they found a translation willing to put forth their private interpretations even when there was no support for it in the original Greek New Testament. 3) As mentioned, this error greatly corrupts and undermines the purpose and clarity of the doctrine of speaking in tongues – interestingly enough, many who use this gift falsely today use the NIV as their primary Bible version – this is no coincidence!

Marlborough drivers impress in Sunbelts series By Damian George Marlborough Kart Club member Scott Madson capped a successful meet for local drivers by winning the junior class at the Sunbelts series in Nelson and Blenheim on the weekend. The 14-year-old was one of many Marlborough drivers to impress during the two-day event, with a number of second-placings also recorded. Andrew Broughton finished at number two in the Rotax Heavy class, two places ahead of fellow local driver Tayler Forbes, while Gary Cooze was second in the senior light section and Allan Clough second overall in the club class. In the new KZ2 class, Chris Cox was runner-up and won the final on day two in Blenheim on Sunday. Day one was raced in wet conditions in Nelson on Saturday. Runner-up honours for local boys

It has been a big weekend for Marlborough’s country music performers, with local names receiving recognition at last week’s New Zealand Country Music Awards and Gold Guitars Awards in Gore. Last Thursday Tua Marina born and bred country music artist Brendon Ham and his band ‘The Brendon Ham Band’ took runnerup honours at the NZ Country Music Awards. They were finalists in the Best Country Music Album for 2011, and closed the show with their hit single ‘Walking on Broken Glass’. For Brendon, getting to the Gore Awards was a big deal and says the band was blown away just to be considered as a finalist. “In NZ one of our biggest hurdles has been distribution, if you are not considered by a major label then it can be hard to get your album into all the main stores. “So getting to Gore and being recognised in these awards has been really great for us and will hopefully open some more doors,” he says. With the awards now behind them, The Brendon Ham Band is now setting its sights on recording new material in the near future. Following on from Thursday’s awards, the NZ Gold Guitars was held over the weekend which saw

Blenheim’s own Matthew McNeilly walk away with an overall runner-up placing. For the 22-year-old, the Gold Guitar Awards was his first taste of what lies ahead as he now begins to make plans for his future. “This has definitely been one of many stepping stones in the right direction, so from here on I aim to get my name out there more, more song writing and create a more professional image,” Matthew says. Being his first ever appearance at the prestigious southern Awards event, Matthew says the experience was “unreal”. “I had no expectations going to the awards but I left everything I could on stage and tried to do the best I could to represent the region. “Of course I would have loved to have been the overall winner, but I feel absolutely great where I am and couldn’t have asked for more,” Matthew says. Aside from his second placing, Matthew also walked away with three trophies after winning the traditional and male vocal sections. He also had one of his songs included in the top 10 showcase for the NZ Country Music Association last Thursday prior to the event. Marlborough singer Rebecca Staples also represented the region at the Gold Guitar Awards.
