Ben Breeze 4 years and his family. Dad Kent, mum Katrina and sister Isabella 14 months old.

Kiwi kid’s shaky start By Annabelle Latz Ben Breeze now knows the sensation of grass between his toes, and used to think that sausage rolls were just hilarious. The four year-old arrived in Blenheim a year ago with his mum, dad and sister, after their home city 60km from Tokyo was left in ruins after the earthquake on March 12, 2011. His parents Katrina and Kent were born in the South Island, but Kent’s work had taken them to Japan, although Ben was born in Singapore and moved to Japan shortly afterwards. His 14 month-old sister Isabella was born in Japan. They joined their grandmother Lorraine Milmine here in Blenheim, and Kent’s mother who lives in Christchurch is Japanese. The Breeze family had an apartment on the top floor of a 16-storey building at Tokyo’s International Airport in Narita, where Kent was involved in the hotel business, the day their lives changed. Ben was having an afternoon nap, Katrina was playing with Isabella, and Kent had just come upstairs for an afternoon coffee. “It was never unusual for there to be an earthquake, we just got used to them, most Japanese people don’t even blink they are so common,” said Kent. New building license no threat to the Kiwi DIY By Annabelle Latz The kiwi way of the Do-It-Yourself will not be too threatened by the new building licensing scheme. That’s according to local retailers and builders, who agree that so long as everyone knows the rules of the new scheme, the ways of DIY will continue. Last week the Licensed Building Practitioners scheme came into effect. Under this scheme, the Department of Building and Housing require builders to hold licenses reflecting their expertise and qualifications, to sign off ‘restricted building work’ on building sites. This means there will be some work traditionally deemed as DIY, that now must be carried out by a qualified builder. Store manager of Mitre 10 MEGA Brad Packham said there is a bit of a

grey area for both professionals and the public, in terms of what tasks are now ‘restricted works.’ “We are urgently trying to find this out, so we can clarify it with our customers. Because DIY is what kiwis do.” He said this won’t affect trade at Mitre 10, because a range of people purchase products there. “The job has got to be done by someone, they still need to buy nails and the timber.” He said this tighter regulation is a good move to ensuring safety. Owner of Blenheim Placemakers Rodger Cullen said customers need to explore the correct avenues before they start their projects at home. “There are some guidelines, they need to know where to look, but this might not be clear yet.”

He said restricted building work is a good way of preventing building work going wrong. “DIY is what makes us who we are, but regulation needs to be applied.” “DIY is what makes us who we are, but regulation needs to be applied.” Jon Haack of Haack Construction Ltd said the home handyman is part of the kiwi way, and hopes the licensing scheme and restricted building work criteria does not threaten this. “We just need to identify the critical bits that have to be finished by a licensed builder, I agree with that.” The Department of Housing and Building communication adviser Helen Pickering said a system which allows for thorough assessment of jobs is a positive move for the industry because it means people are having better confidence in building and buying homes.

A shaky start for Kiwi kid from Japan From Page 1. Because they had been living in Japan for three years, Katrina admits they had become rather blasé about shakes. “When it first started shaking we carried on having our coffee, but it slowly got bigger and bigger,” she said. Then the alarm went off, which is triggered when the force of an earthquake reaches a certain level. They had never known the alarm to go off before. “It was very violent, it was everywhere, and it went on for a long time,” said Katrina. The epicenter of the quake, 200km north of Narita, was 9.0 on the Richter scale, and they experienced a shake of 7.6. During a small interval of shaking, they made their way down the 16 flights of stairs to the evacuation area.

“Everyone was just in shock, there were even people in dressing gowns, it was like one of those movie scenes,” said Kent. They had been speaking to Christchurch friends after the earthquake in Canterbury two weeks earlier, and could not believe they were now experiencing it. Katrina and Kent recalled the trauma of electricity loss, food and fuel shortages, watching the Tsunami wave in disbelief on the television, dealing with nuclear fallout risks, and having to squeeze into the loft of the hotel for a time that evening, as darkness wrapped over the city and temperatures were below freezing due to the snow dump a few days earlier. “A wedding had been planned for that afternoon, so luckily there was plenty of food to help people out,” said Kent. They were planning a family holiday to

Disneyland for later that year, but plans had to change quickly and Katrina arrived in Blenheim a few days later with Ben and Isabelle. Kent followed shortly afterwards. “It puts things into perspective very quickly. We learn what is important and what is not,” said Katrina. Katrina said Blenheim has been a very supportive community, and it’s a luxury having facilities like supermarkets and doctors so close by. “It’s similar to what we are used to, we were quite excited about coming home.” But it was a cultural shock for Ben. New Zealand lifestyle is much less structured than in Japan, with much more open space here too. “It was a bit of a shock for him.” Ben was fluent in Japanese when he arrived,

but now never speaks it. “He refuses now, he just wants to fit in with the other kids.” “It was just different over there, nothing better or worse, it was just different,” said Kent. Ben just loves kiwi life now. “It’s fine here, it’s best,” said Ben. Being outside is his favorite place for play, either in the garden with the plants or playing with his toys on the lawn. “I like to build train tracks, and play on my scooter,” said Ben. Rice is still on his favourite food list, but amongst his favourites is chocolate and milo. Isabelle is an outdoors girl too, and the family make good use of the nearby beaches and grassy playgrounds. “A few changes have crept in, including a bit of kiwi slang!” said Katrina.

Parking wardens’ revenue down Parking wardens can get a hard time. There are two full time wardens in Blenheim, and one in Picton, and between them they issue on average 200 tickets per week. “Revenue to Council for the period July to December 2011 was $752,980,” said Frank Porter, Marlborough Roads manager. This revenue has been down since 2009, which Frank said could be due to the economic recession. But indications show a recent steadying of revenue from parking tickets. Despite less people getting tickets, parking wardens still experience periods of the year when they receive a noticeable amount of verbal abuse from members of the public. One parking warden in Blenheim, who wants to be known just as John, says they do get a bit of flak from the public, but that’s just part of the job.

John checks on another parking meter on his beat around Blenheim. “Some days I don’t even write any tickets,” Andrew Holdaway, who said it was usually he said. local regular troublemakers who cause the And despite what the public believe, trouble. parking wardens are not on a quota system. Frank said the construction of the public “Verbal abuse of parking wardens goes carpark has also affected the revenue from in fits and starts. Sometimes we won’t get tickets, with more cars using this facilany for ages,” said Blenheim constable ity, which uses barrier arms not parking

Hi-flyer takes on young Eagles Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Aviation through the eyes of young person is a wondrous world of high-flying dreams; dreams the Marlborough Aero Club is hoping to bring to life for the youth of Marlborough. The Club has been offering an internationally recognised aviation programme called ‘Young Eagles’ to youth aged nine to 17-years since 2001, and taking up the mantel of running it is local man Bob Guard. Bob is a leading figure in the New Zealand aviation industry and has worked for Safe Air and Air NZ in past years. Retired now Bob volunteered to run the Young Eagles programme, saying he wanted to give back to the industry by helping those at the bottom end. “The Marlborough Aero Club runs it as a free course that gives young people an insight into the different areas of aviation, from

fixed wing aircraft to helicopters, to aircraft engineering and air traffic control. “Aviation is an exciting and dynamic industry to be part of so I really encourage youth to get involved,” Bob says. Over the years Bob has hired and trained pilots for all roles but now he is excited to back where the passion for flying begins. “There are so many things competing for kid’s time nowadays so it’s fantastic to see how many kids are getting involved,” he says. The Club will be hosting a welcome/info morning on Saturday March 24 at 10am at the Aero Club Flight Office. There will also be a $2000 scholarship available from the Marlborough Aero Club as part of the programme which will get the student up to or past their first solo flight. Lock up to avoid theft By Annabelle Latz Unlocked goods make thieves’ jobs too easy. Lock your house, lock your car, and keep valuables out of sight. Community constable Russ Smith said this message needs to be refreshed. “More than half the vehicles broken into have not been secure, and it doesn’t matter where they are parked or for how long, because opportunist thieves will take that opportunity.” Around 250 cars each year in Blenheim are broken into, and additionally about 50 are stolen. Russ said people cars need locking, valuables need hiding, whether it’s parked on the lawn, up the driveway,

or on the road. New subdivisions have been heavily targeted too, with offenders

assuming if people can afford good houses their cars must be full of valuables too. “The majority of the offenders are early teens to mid-twenties, often supporting a drug habit.” The actual number of cars broken into each year is higher than 250, because car break ins often go unreported. Russ said conducting a search warrant related to one crime often leads to the discovery of other stolen goods. “When people choose not to tell the police, it makes things much more complicated for us.” The most commonly stolen items stolen are ipods, wallets, laptops,

Pastels exhibit a first By Celeste Lodewyk A national pastel art group founded in Blenheim will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this month by holding their annual exhibition in Blenheim. Among their list of achievements they can count getting pastel as a medium accepted in New Zealand, which means pastel paintings can now be exhibited in top galleries. Founder Walter Scott said locals should come and have a look because he is unsure when Blenheim will see this exhibition again. “We might not see this exhibition for another ten years – there are a lot of towns with appropriate facilities.” The exhibition will also be

varied in terms of subject and style, since the judges are kept secret so artists cannot taper to judges’ interests. Over 100 paintings have been submitted from across the country and from these 60-80 will be chosen for the exhibition. Mr Scott said prior to the group’s founding pastel art was resisted because of doubts about its durability and was considered “as something you

potter around with as school kids”. He said different mediums age differently – oil colours darken, however, artist quality pastels do not fade significantly and if mounted correctly will not “fall off”. He points out that cave paintings done 5000 years ago “are still as bright as when they were painted”. Mr Scott recounts the shock people experience when they

see a quality pastel painting. “People are absolutely staggered; they don’t realize the possibilities and levels of achievement you can achieve with pastel.” The exhibition “Purely Pastel” will be held at Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery and will be opened by the Honourable Chris Finlayson on March 30. The public are invited to the exhibition from March 31 to April 15.

Rest home or hospital level care in a private, modern suite. Ladies from St Mary’s church’s social justice group have issued a challenge to other local churches. Once a month the group of around ten ladies volunteers for Crossroads Marlborough Charitable Trust, formerly John’s Kitchen, by making soup and sandwiches. Monica Nott, one of the volunteers, said the group started over two years ago and operate to a roster they organized so half volunteer 8:30am-11am and half 11am-1:30pm. She said there is definitely a need for the service and volunteering is a great way to

help the community, although they are not looking for attention. “We are not trying to stand out or anything. It’s only once a month but it comes around quite quickly.” Amongst making sandwiches on site the ladies still find time to sit down and have a friendly chat with anyone at the drop-in centre. Crossroads coordinator John Symington said most of the local churches support the service in some way, but volunteers are a necessity. Anyone wanting to volunteer can call Crossroads on 578 5395 and speak to John.

The “Beast of Blenheim” Stewart Murray Wilson has told a judge in the Wellington court on Tuesday he wants a quiet release into the community with no media attention. His release is expected in September this year. Stewart Murray Wilson, was jailed in 1996 for offences spanning 25 years, including rape, attempted rape, indecent assault, wilfully ill-treating a child and bestiality. A former girlfriend of Wilson, Lois Lenaghan has spoken out recently on Wilson’s impending release, saying he was abusive and manipulative. “He should have got a lot longer.”

A staff member at Fab Foods contacted The Sun yesterday afternoon, expressing concern for her and her workmates who now have to look for new jobs. “It’s hard, because there are lots of people looking for jobs at the moment. I’ve been at Fab Foods for a year and really enjoy it.” She hopes the catering business will keep some of the staff busy enough. Building the new 3500 sq m Countdown supermarket is due to begin in early spring.

By Annabelle Latz Rarangi Beach buzzed with volunteers on Sunday, taking part in Working Bees on the Beach. As part of Sea Week, groups were dotted in different spots around Marlborough to clean up rubbish at beaches and rivers. Colin Davis, programme manager for Community Relations at the DOC, counted about 60 people at Wairau Bar at the weekend. Together they collected about half a tonne of rubbish. “It’s excellent, I’m overwhelmed by the number of people here. It’s the best response we’ve ever had.” He wanted to thank Shelly Sidley from DOC for all hard work in raising awareness of the beach clean ups. rigHt: lynne addie, teresa dalzell (tua Marina) and rob orchard, (wairau Bar) were at the wairau Bar on sunday morning picking up rubbish, as part of sea week.

Sun readers have their say... Q: How do you rate the Blenheim markets, and should they all be in one place, as in Nelson?

Lynne Windleburn Blenheim

Louise Wilson Blenheim

I don’t go to the Blenheim markets, I like the Nelson markets better.

I like them spread out, because they are on different days and different people can make them.

Fay Uddstrom Blenheim I enjoy the markets in Nelson. I feel the Blenheim markets are in too many places, but I like it when it is in the carpark because it’s handy.

Deb Ballantyne Blenheim No, there are not too many and I’m happy the way they are.

“Bookworld is for the love of reading.” mr green

Love mowing? We do - it’s our business!

I was interested in your cover article (Sun March 7th, 2012) and agree with builder Jon Haack that the public will be confused because the new law is not necessary. It is a matter of historical fact that not one single leaky building has been built by a so-called backyarder or private home maker. All of those which made it into news items were much too big to have been contemplated by private interests; the inference being that all of them have been built by commercial interests, and probably designed by architects who should carry a significant proportion of the

Garage sale adverts Dear Ed, Good morning, I have just received and read your Friday Sun. Nice thank you. I offer you the following suggestion for your consideration, for future editions. Make provision for advertisements for ‘Garage Sales’. It would be interesting to see the results. Best regards Ian Thanks Ian we agree that’s a good idea... authorising institutions concerned. The fault lies in the ease with which any company can be set up, cancelled and re-established with a slightly altered name (i.e, “Beautiful Homes 1989, Ltd.,” closed down and replaced by “Beautiful Homes 1992, Ltd.,” for example - often without even a change of address) without any liability for shonky workmanship, Dear Ed, shady dealing or breach of contract being The size of the print in the new telephone directory carried over from one firm to its successor; or a company being sold without the makes one wonder if the compilers have shares in new owners taking over the liabilities of an opticians business! the previous ownership or that liability The book is smaller, the print is much smaller and following the owner who was responsible frankly it’s a poor effort. for the inadequacy. continued below Fred Myopia

There is also the limited liability clause in the companies’ act which allows liability to be restricted to a ludicrously low level for any breach of the consumer protection act. This is basically what is responsible for so many investment companies collapsing. Their directors know that liability will be limited so that if they can remove their capital from the company and transfer it to the ownership of some other individual from spouses onwards, they can get off scot free and start again and, therefore, they make decisions without sufficient regard to their duty of diligence responsibilities. Only legislation which would prevent these two things from taking place will safeguard the consumer as it does in many countries around the world. If a contractor or an investment broker (or owner, or company director) knows beyond any doubt that failure of his product to perform, remain healthy or last for a reasonable length of time will

involve him in expensive legal repercussions, and/or reparations and that reliance on the limited liability clauses in the “companies act” will not allow him to escape his normal legal responsibilities, he will take every precaution to ensure his product is satisfactory and the problem will be solved long term. Such changes will need a great deal more influence, drive and resource than any private individual is able to bring to bear since it will probably necessitate a change of law involving acts etc of parliament. So my assessment is that it would take a medium such as yours to effect any meaningful change. Another not unreasonable change in the law would be to hold any judge, magistrate or similar office holder responsible for, and culpable for, and punishable in law for the murder, rape or other crime committed by any person he/she has released on bail. Keeping your home warm and dry this winter Lack of insulation and leaking taps are two of the most common problems during winter. Insulation is essential to keep your home warm in winter. A well-insulated home will provide year-round comfort, and cost less to heat. Insulation also helps to reduce noise levels and condensation. There are legal minimum requirements for insulation in new homes and additions to existing homes. If you can, it’s worth spending a little

more to exceed these requirements and get an even warmer, more comfortable home with lower power bills. For existing homes, even though there are no specific requirements, installing or upgrading your insulation is one of the best investments you can make. A dripping tap is one most common plumbing fault you’re most likely to encounter at home. If you don’t repair the leak, it’s money

down the drain – literally. Leaking taps only get worse with time. The question is how much water will you waste before getting the drip fixed. Taps that drip, are most commonly caused by worn out washers. These tap washers need to create a watertight seal to stop the water flow and the washers wear out with time, letting water leak from the tap. Talk to your local plumber about these and more solutions for your home.

Roadside yarn In many of our small rural towns there is always a well known individual who is often seen leaning against his vehicle yarning with the locals. This is the case with Wairau Valley man Geoff Rentoul whose family ties and lifetime service to the region have made him somewhat of a local identity, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out.

Geoff and his wife Dawn own and operate GH Rentoul Ltd, a garage located on the main road which provides a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) service and WOF related repairs. This garage has played an important role in the area’s history. Previously owned by Arthur Baker, a Second World War Airforce mechanic, the garage offered mechanical services as well as operating three diesel and petrol pumps and a small convenience store directly beside it. Today, only the convenience store remains in place for truck drivers, locals and tourists while Geoff is the sole operator of the garage. Geoff was born in Blenheim but raised on his family’s Wairau Valley sheep farm, Wye Hills. The farm had been owned by his grandfather before Geoff’s father took over and today it still remains in the family, farming deer, sheep and cattle. Many fond memories stem from Geoff’s childhood including his father’s influence

in mechanics. “I was always interested in mechanics and my father was always handy when it came to fixing cars and machinery. “Most people were in those days as many couldn’t afford to pay someone else to do the work, so this was something I grew up with and decided to carry on with,” he says. Geoff’s parents also had a blacksmith shop where he remembers playing as a kid, that was when he wasn’t out “roaming” the hills, he says. “Back in those days kids often went roaming about their properties and it was very safe for us to be out alone. “When ever my parents wanted us home they would hit this big donging bell outside of the house and us kids could hear it all around the hills. “Then we would hoof it home,” Geoff laughs. In his teens, Geoff was taken on as an

apprentice with Arthur Baker at age 17 where he learnt the trade. After meeting his wife Dawn, Geoff says he remembers telling Arthur he was leaving the garage to get married and start a family, which prompted Arthur to make him an offer he couldn’t refuse. “Arthur told me he would leave instead and I could take over the business, which he did before he returned to Blenheim,” Geoff says. From that point Geoff and Dawn have continued to operate the business which, after 40 years has experienced a number of changes throughout the year. “Around 10 years ago we had the pumps taken out which ended up being a good thing as this highway was too quiet to make anything from fuel sales. “After one year of not operating any

“...this is something I grew up with and decided to carry on with.”

pumps we could see that we didn’t really lose out,” he says. Even the mechanic side of the business has changed a lot, says Geoff. “I have pulled back a lot and now spend most of my time doing WOF checks under the umbrella of MTA. “Mostly locals come through but now and again I get the odd person I don’t know coming in. It doesn’t take long to get yarning to them,” Geoff grins. When the subject of retirement is raised, Geoff simply shrugs his shoulders and grins. “Retirement is something Dawn and I have talked about, I just haven’t got around to doing anything about it yet,” he laughs. The spare time that Geoff does have to himself he enjoys restoring classic cars, one of which is a 1929 DA Dodge. “I haven’t got a project at the moment but I have restored a number of cars in my time and have built enough go karts and other toys for my three sons over the years,” he says.

World Triathlon Championship selection

With sets all tied-up we should have seen MGC go from strength to strength but however they seemed to tire and Cannons dug deeper and proved too powerful and too experienced gaining the lead, the momentum, the final set, 25-18 and the game 2 sets to 1. In the next game MGC Senior C played to the higher level expected of them in this competitive grade but opponents Kinoaths were always go to have the greater edge and worked quite well to dissect their opposition in what proved emphatically to be the game winning first two sets. Set scores 25-12 and 25-12 only to let their guard down and the lasses from Senior C only needed a sniff to set their sights on gaining at least a point for their efforts. They didn’t quite make it but put on a show to get very close to Kinoaths making them work hard for their eventual 26-24 set win. In the final game of the evening MBC remains alive in the competition and very much still in running for a berth in the club finals in 3 weeks time. They met Treefellas in a most entertaining game which saw both teams and all players engaged in really long rallies. The first set was a real tussle which

could have gone either way but tipped MBC’s 25-23. The second pretty much mirrored the first until Treefellas gained a slight edge and cleverly maintained it to gain the equaliser with style 21-25. With sets one-apiece it was truly game on and proved to be a very tight battle for honours. Long rallies persisted and for Treefellas Alvar Del Castillo had a solid game whilst standout players for MBC were Andrew Jeffries in the libero role and Kadin Hegglun setting superbly made the difference and helped their team win the all important 2 extra points necessary for MBC to gain the win. Set score going well into extra points, 28-26. Westmeat Geriatrics were presented with The Fairweathers Fair Play of the Week Award. President’s Grade: Woodbourne Cannon beat MGC Senior B 2-1; Kinoaths beat MGC Senior C 3-0; MBC beat Treefellas 2-1. C Grade:Desperate Housewives beat MASH 3-0. Westmeat Geriatrics beat MGC Juniors 3-0. Mixed Grade:MIA beat Safe Crackers 3-0. Meaters beat Safe Air Social 2-1. Social Grade:The A-Team beat Six Degrees 2-1, Domin8 beat Six Pack Dreamers 3-0.

Volleyball upset is possible L a st T hu r sd ay n ig ht at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 saw round five of play in Marlborough Volleyball Club’s Fairweathers’ Senior Competition. The business end of the competition begins with just 2 weeks of play before finals on the 29th March. Competition leaders can change in all grades and an upset is unlikely but still possible in the President’s grade as Woodbourne Cannons lead by 5 points. What should help the nearest two contenders MGC Senior B and MBC in their strive to reach the final is that they each have a game in hand that will be contested as they play a doubleheader against each other this coming Thursday evening. The game is being played as a catch-up due to a prior commitment to compete at the Mainland Secondary School Champs a fortnight ago. In the first game at the stadium last Thursday evening the MGC Senior B team struggled with combinations in the first and last set. The first set saw the Cannons with just too much firepower and finishing strongly with a 25-20 score. In the second MGC Senior B settled into their game plan playing more consistent volleyball and well deserved to equalise with a fine 19-25 set win.
