By Damian George Blenheim’s Paddy Barry’s Irish Pub is putting the finishing touches on preparations today as it gears up for one of the most popular days of the year. St Patrick’s Day 2011 will be celebrated in true Irish style at venues all over the country tomorrow, and nowhere more so than at one of the town’s favourite bars. Christchurch’s The Rob Ferris Blarney Band have made their way to Blenheim to perform as

many of Christchurch’s Irish bars in the CBD remain closed following the recent earthquake. Paul McElhinney, who owns Paddy Barry’s with wife Liz, says it promises to again be an eventful occasion, now in its 15th year. “You won’t get in here after 5.30pm,” he says. “By the time the dancers get in here and start at 6pm, there’s no room anywhere.” He says many foreigners in the region for the upcoming Marlborough vintage still have some time to kill before the season really kicks off,

so a diverse range of nationalities should add to the festivities. Irish dancers are also planned for tomorrow, as well as prizes and giveaways including Paddy Barry’s merchandise, and some special dishes. Liz says traditional Irish favourites such as pickled pork and cabbage, soda bread, and Bailey’s cheesecake will be on the menu, to go with standards such as Guinness Pie and the Paddy’s Burger. Doors are open from 10.30am tomorrow.

Brewery, auction raise over $6000 By Damian George A whole mutton, robotic floor cleaners, and a night at Blenheim’s Chateau Marlborough were among the prizes snapped up at Moa Brewery’s charity auction for the Christchurch earthquake last Wednesday. Moa Brewery also donated all the money generated from beer sales at the event - a total of $3500 - to bring the total haul to $6350. The money was then gifted to the New Zealand Red Cross Marlborough Branch on Monday. John’s Kitchen vies for title Marlborough’s John’s Kitchen is preparing to do battle with New Zealand’s top voluntary organisations at the 2010 TrustPower National Community Awards in Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty this weekend. The Blenheim-based community kitchen will compete against 24 fellow regional winners from around the country, after taking out the Marlborough District title at the TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards last year. They will be judged on an eight-minute presentation outlining what they have achieved and why they deserve to win, as well as a 1000-word summary of their organisation. The Supreme Winner will take home $2,500, a framed certificate, trophy, and prize package from Foresee Communications valued at $1500, while the runner-up will receive $1500. The event will run from March 18-20, with the winner announced at a dinner on March 19.

Thank you, good people of Blenheim The Sun received this letter from a Christchurch resident who experienced first-hand the generosity of the Blenheim people in the wake of last month’s earthquake. It reads: “I am a resident of Christchurch, in the suburb of Mt Pleasant. I would like to express my grateful thanks and appreciation to the good people of Blenheim for the support and kindness given to the people of this city.

In particular, I would like to say a sincere thank you to the wonderful lady [she will know who she is] who called me across from my car in Major Hornbrook Rd after I had filled up my water container at the school grounds. To my great surprise, she then presented me with a bag of various tins and a container with homemade shortbread [eaten in short time] which she said had come from the people of Blenheim.

The lack of power [14 days] and water [still not on] we have been able to manage, but it has been these wonderful acts of kindness from around the country and the world that have done so much to provide us with the mental sustenance and strength, to say nothing of the physical support and encouragement. Thank you, good people of Blenheim, you are wonderful.” John Gilbert

Seagers Gin 1 Litre Not convinced: Marlborough Concerned Citizens chairman Robert McDowell [left] and secretary Ken Lawrence say the surplus land at Wairau Hospital is needed for future expansion of the Marlborough Hospice.

By Damian George Selling the surplus land at Wairau Hospital will leave the Marlborough Community Hospice with nowhere to go when it faces an inevitable expansion, members of Marlborough Concerned Citizens say. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board [NMDHB] are planning to sell the 5.6 hectares of land for an expected return of $3 million, and are currently working through legislation issues. But Marlborough Concerned Citizens chairman Robert McDowell says the move will strip the hospice of much needed land for an extension. “If the hospice wants to expand

- and every indication is we are going to need more hopsice beds and respite beds in there in the near future - where are they going to go?” he says. The hospice currently has an occupancy rate of 86 percent - a figure which has grown rapidly in recent times, Robert says. “In my estimation, it will need to extend in the next 12-18 months, especially with what’s happened in Christchurch. People are going to need the services of a good hospice like ours.” He says the only direction the hospice can go in to expand is east - where the land due to be sold is situated. However, Marlborough Com-

munity Hospice manager Beth Tester says the hospice is still a long way away from exceeding its capacity. “Our numbers are increasing, certainly, and there’s a bit of tension in the system, but it’s a healthy tension,” she says. “I think we’re going to be okay for the next few years. “I can see from their perspective but, from our perspective, I think we’re okay with the room we have at this moment in time.” Beth also says the hospice has “quite a lot” of land on which they can expand on if they need to. “We do have more land available and we could always go up if we needed to as well.”

Quake stalls carpark progress By Damian George Construction of the Alfred Street carpark could be delayed as aftershocks in Christchurch continue to hamper the delivery of building materials. Marlborough District Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says frequent assessments of equipment used to move hollow core beams manufactured in Christhurch is slowing down the building’s progress. The beams must be carefully lifted off precast beds by a crane or gantry. “The pre-cast beds have to be set up perfectly level or else your end product ends up distorted,” he says. “After every shake in Christchurch, the beds have to be checked and the gantry re-certified by structural engineers to ensure no damage has occurred.” He says it is too early to tell if or how long the project will be delayed, and will have a better idea by the end of the month. Meanwhile, Mr Lyall says the

complex will be safeguarded as much as possible against earthquake damage, as questions circle about the safety of some fallen Christchurch buildings following last month’s devastating quake. “The first thing to note is Blenheim is in a higher design code area than Christchurch,” he says.

“This means that buildings are required to be designed to higher standards than in Christchurch we are a Zone A [high]; Christchurch is Zone B and C [medium and low].” He says the building design has not altered at all as a result of the Christchurch quake.

Trek covers 2,500km

Godfrey Earle was one of 10 Top of the South tractor drivers who convoyed their way to Tapanui in celebration of 150-years of McCormack Deering International in New Zealand. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

By Celeste Lodewyk Three weeks travelling by tractor covering 2,500 km’s might curl the toes of most people, but for local members of the Top of the South Tractor Group it was the highlight of their year. Ken Barr, Doris Holdaway, Ian LeGrice and Godfrey Earle left the comfort of their homes on February 20 to tractor their way to Tapanui for the 150-year celebration of McCormack Deering International in New Zealand. The group arrived back on Sunday. The trip was successful for most of the members although Ian LeGrice’s tractor suffered a broken crank

shaft, forcing him to pull out south of Murchison. According to Godfrey the group’s biggest day covered around 200km at an average of 25km per hour with other days covering an average of 140km. “At one stage we were passed by a group of pushbikes,” he jokes. “Some people can’t believe that we tractored all that way, but it was a great experience and we witnessed a lot of amazing sights.” The wives and partners of the trekkers travelled behind in caravans, providing well earned tea and snack breaks. During the first leg of the jour-

ney the group heard of the recent Christchurch earthquake, news that shook them to the core. “There were tears all round when we heard. We discussed whether we could help but we decided the best thing was not to get in the way so we headed inland and went around Christchurch. “But we did see a lot of farmers with utes loaded with food, tools and water containers heading into the city, that was a very humbling sight,” Godfrey says. In Tapanui the group joined hundreds of “like minded” tractor enthusiasts to take part in a show which featured nearly 500 Internationals.

MARLBOROUGH STADIUM TRUST

From left: Tua Marina resident John Masters [left], Tua Marina Residents’ Association member Sue Gill, and hall custodian Bill Neal, with memorabilia from the hall, want the building to remain where it is.

The Tua Marina community must find a solution from within its own ranks to the conflict over the site of the Tua Marina Waikakaho Memorial Hall, Marlborough District Council assets and services committee chairman Graeme Taylor says. Tua Marina representatives have proposed to move the hall across State Highway 1 onto the Tua Marina School grounds to improve accessibility, a move which has been met with resistance by some locals. Councillor Taylor says he encourages those involved to try and get an accurate picture of community feeling by conducting a survey of all residents. “I’d like to see a solution which encourages the best possible use of this hall as a community centre – which was what the hall was always meant to be,” he says. “But it’s the community itself that has to tell us how that can be achieved.” However, wherever the hall is located, its heritage status would not change, he says. “It’s a war memorial as well as a facility which must remain available to the wider community to use, even if it’s moved onto the school grounds.” Councillor Taylor says the Tua Marina Residents Association applied to the council to move the hall, primarily to prevent local school children having to cross the road and rail line to get to it. “Their proposal made sense to me but the council can’t be expected to sign off any decision while there is some community dissent about the proposal,” he says.

By Damian George The South Island title is in the bag, now the Marlborough Girls’ College under-15 coxed fours rowing team are targeting national success at Lake Karapiro. The team of Portia Barcello, Nadja Hyson, TessaJane Power, Jessica Donald and cox Ella-Rose Hammond won gold in their section at the Meridian South Island Secondary School Champs in Twizel on the weekend, with a time of 8m 2.06s. It capped an incredibly successful weekend for Marlborugh crews, in which Marlborough Boys’ College scooped five gold medals and two bronze, while Marlborough Girls’ claimed a further three bronze. The foursome have only been rowing since the start of the current season last November, but are already eyeing the gold medal at the national secondary schools Maadi Cup Regatta in Hamilton beginning on March 18. “We just want to go as far as we can, the sky’s the limit,” Jessica says. “We don’t have specific goals with the times we do; we just want to improve as much as possible and do whatever we have to do to try and win.” Facing difficult winds in the final, the girls actually finished nearly eight seconds outside their qualifying time in the 2km event, and were well outside their personal best of 7m 36s. Fuelled by the euphoria of victory, the team are determined to again produce speeds nearer to their best to get back on the dais in Hamilton. “It was pretty cool when we got the gold medal,” Portia says of the victory. “Standing on the podium was probably the highlight. We really wanted the medal.” Team coach Dave Williamson says the rowers have the potential to achieve extraordinary success if they stick with the sport. “They’re probably athletically the best group I’ve had in the 12 years I’ve been coaching,” he says. “Hopefully I can make it enjoyable enough so they’re still here in three year’s time. They’re probably challenging to win the Dawn Cup [national under-18 race] if they stay in it, which we haven’t achieved in the girls since 1988.”

Speed networking By Celeste Lodewyk Last year’s fast paced “speed networking” was so successful that organisers have decided to host another on March 17. Speed networking is a threehour hui where Marlborough workers within the health and social sector spend three minutes talking to one another before the bell rings to move onto another. Behind this year’s event are two local organisations, Supporting Families (SF) Marlborough, and Strengthening Families which have collaborated to bring this event to Blenheim for the second time. SF Marlborough field worker

Supporting Families field worker Lyn Caughey has joined forces with Strengthening Families co-ordinator Lynda Soper to bring “Speed Networking” to Blenheim again this year.

Lyn Caughey said last year’s event was the first, but after receiving an abundance of positive feedback and support it was decided to run it again. “We had 60 people at last year’s event so we are confident that this year will be the same, if not more successful,” she says. “The purpose of speed networking is for workers in government and non government organisations to meet, establish contacts and discuss how we can work together to best service the community.” Strengthening Families coordinator Lynda Soper says she was surprised at last year’s event

how many services she was unaware of. “There were many people who commented that they had not known how many health and social sector services were available. “This is why we are encouraging as many people to enrol for speed networking as possible so we can all get to know one another and build a network of connections between us,” she says. Speed Networking will be held March 17 at the Clubs of Marlborough from 1pm to 4pm. The Blenheim Beaver Town Lions have joined the growing list of Marlburians pitching in to help Christchurch following last month’s earthquake. Member Kay Pont baked nearly 100 cupcakes of various flavours for their “coffee and cup cakes” morning tea on Thursday, which they offered in return for canned goods for Cantabrians still struggling without power. “We all want to give to the Christchurch people and to let them know we are thinking of them and this is our contribution,” Blenheim Beaver Town Lions publicity officer Carol Taylor says. The club collected more than 200 food items including canned food, preserves, long-life milk, muesli bars and tea bags. A representative was due to present the collection to a Salvation Army in Christchurch on Thursday.

Debbie Powell with sons Thomas Boyce (10-years) and Ned Boyce (7-years) won a nationwide competition, their prize - a rock concert at their school, Springlands School.

By Celeste Lodewyk Two Springlands School students have been very popular amongst their peers this week after they won a rock concert for their school. Thomas (10-years) and Ned (7-years) Boyce were entered into the nationwide “Back to School Rocks” online promotion with Paper Plus by their mother Debbie Powell. As part of their prize package, popular pop rock band Ivy Lies will be performing for the school this Friday. The boys will enjoy the show from their own VIP box along with 12 of their friends, and will also have a meet and greet session with the band. To enter the competition entrants had to spend $25 or more with any Paper Plus store across the country between December 2010 and February 2011. Paper Plus Blenheim assistant manager Karen Gibb said staff were excited to hear the prize was won locally. “What a great win for Marlborough! “We are thrilled for Thomas and Ned and for Springlands School,” she said. Debbie who entered the competition on behalf of her boys said the family was “rapt” to hear they had won. “We are over the moon as this is a big win for the school and for the boys, and the boys are really looking forward to their rock treatment,” she said. Springlands School principal Gaylene Beattie said it was fantastic for a local school to win a national prize. “This will be a great experience for students and everyone is very excited,” she said. The grand prize included a rock concert at the winners’ nominated school, featuring Ivy Lies, a digital video camera, a travel voucher, Fly Buys points, an AvantiPlus bike and accessories, a Paper Plus gift card and Adidas eyewear.

I think twice about going out in the car, it’s about planning.

I make my trips into town count and do everything all at once.

The amount that I put in doesn’t go as far as it used to. It will hurt the pocket more.

It won’t affect me, as I am only in town twice a week and I get everything when I come in.

I’m going to make sure I use supermarket vouchers, and a few extra hours at work to afford fuel.

It’s restricting me from travelling- I rely on my car as I’m on a disability benefit. I can’t go as many places as I used to. I can’t walk places, so yes it does affect me.

Air display “bailout” Dear Ed, I am amazed and angered the council in hard times (recession) and when rates should he held, can indulge in a handout to the very fine Omaka Air Display. My concern is the council voted to “bail out” but the CEO said

it was not a “bailout” but funding to build more displays. Why would expansion be taking place in a financial loss? Come on councillors! Wake up! You were voted in by ratepayers. Fred Quercus

Trying to make sense of it all Dear Ed, In his recent “Bible Answers” , self-appointed mouthpiece for God - Pastor Jeff Williams, informs us that natural disasters e.g Christchurch (and now Japan) are God’s way of both punishing our collective and individual “immorality” (including unbelief in Him), and impressing upon us our “need for a Saviour”. If we spurn said Saviour, the Pastor tells us God will consign us to a place of agony and torment for ‘Eternity‘. No forgiveness, no clemency, no right

of appeal, no parole – just relentless suffering for ever; full stop. The loony part is that Pastor Williams, whose smugness is surpassed only by his intolerance of any other points of view, wants us then to believe that this cruel, spiteful, punishment-obsessed Tyrant is, above all, a ‘God of Love’. YEAH RIGHT!! If such a deity exists, Pastor Williams is welcome to her. His ‘gospel’ is a gospel of judgement, fear, coercion and hate. Phil Dashfield

Tua Marina Hall shift Dear Editor, In regard to your article the proposed shifting of the Tua Marina Hall, I regard the moving of this Community Owned Hall, (NOT Council owned) as outrageous!! This would make no provision for children and people, possibly who live on the hall side, to cross the highway. Tua Marina being a built up area, on the higway, needs to be a restricted speed area, in my opinion, needs to have further

signs added - “Slow down Pedestrian Crossing” marked out, and managed at school times. The Crossing would allow for both directions. Now the Train - The school needs to phone the Railways and find out when the trains come through, and adjust their school movements in between. Yours, K.O. Laurence Secretary, Marlborough Concerned Citizens Inc.

Win a copy of “In Love with Moko” Moko the fr iendly dolphin won many a heart as he swam the waters from Mahia to Gisbor ne, Whakatane and Tauranga. This beautifully presented book of memories, stories and photographs has been recorded to share some of the emotive events during Moko’s travels before his tragic death in the winter of 2010. The young dolphin was famous for his trusting nature, free spirit and delightful sense of humour. Educational, entertaining, and poignant, ‘In Love with Moko’ is a worthy tribute to this unforgettable dolphin and all the wondrous things he achieved in his short but meaningful life. Published authors/illustrator of In Love with Moko, Nikki Slade Robinson and Val Bird are offering one free copy to a Sun reader who submits a short story in tribute to their own beloved pet. The short story can be between 100 and 300 words, and can be emailed to celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz or posted to Celeste Lodewyk, PO Box 634 Blenheim. High Tea celebration Out with jam jars

Paula Allen celebrated her 60th birthday with friends on Friday by enjoying a “High Tea”, hosted by Jill Rodgerson of Devon Nursery.

Local woman Paula Allen celebrated her 60th birthday recently, enjoying a High Tea with friends and supporting Hospice Marlborough at the same time. High Tea at Devon was created by Jill Rodgerson of Devon Nursery to fundraise essential funds for the Hospice. “Instead of donating $100 of my own, I realised that by hosting

groups for a High Tea I was able to raise more money and have fun at the same time. “By charging $10 per person I am potentially tripling my donation over two weeks,” she says. Jill bakes all of her own food including savouries and cakes and serves it using her mother’s silver and linen. Outside guests have access to a

private garden area. “So far my High Tea has been a great success and is proving more and more popular for group bookings,” she says. As for the birthday girl, it was thumbs up from Paula and her friends who were thrilled to be treated to a delectable chocolate birthday cake.

The other is a brand new outdoor setting which will be delivered once the Ward’s outdoor area is completed. Spinning some magic Terence Stewart talks to Damian George about his new art genre just waiting to be discovered. They say you can make art out of anything, and one man has stretched that philosophy to its extreme by creating 3D artworks out of one of nature’s wonders - the spider web. While most people would look at the arachnid handywork as nothing more than an unwanted mark on the ceiling corner, Blenheim man Terence Stewart saw them as an opportunity to create a whole new genre of art. By delicately painting over the webs with two to three coats of resin, which he applies using a small pin attached to the end of a paint brush, Terence freezes in time one of nature’s creations and transforms it into a visual living room centrepiece. “It really came about from my love of nature and all the amazing things I’ve seen,” he says of his idea. “I just wanted to preserve all that and I also wanted to get people to think ‘how is that actually made?’” To create something completely different, Terence decided he needed to expand on an idea already trialled by a few artists worldwide. “I’d done a lot of research on it and found a few people had done 2D stuff, so I thought ‘what could I do now?’ “I started off with creating glowin-the-dark ones, and I’ve finished up with this.” You will probably be wondering how one actually goes about handling such a fragile artistic material without breaking its wispy structure. “Very carefully,” he says. “You have to take all negative aspects out of your mind and just concentrate. “You’ve got to breathe through

your nose - if you breathe too hard, you could ruin the whole thing.” A former Department of Conservation employee and Marlborough District Council pest control officer, Terence suffered an “inevitable” fall while on the job which eventually put him out of work in 2004, meaning he has a lot of time on his hands. Just as well, as the process takes many hours of intense concentration. His personal favourite work - a mounted wine bottle shape entitled “Bottomless” - took 80 hours to complete, while his piece called “The Face” took 160 hours. Terence’s artworks received a mixed response when they were displayed at a Marlborough Art Society exhibition recently. Although generating a lot of interest, his work was met with a large degree of uncertainty from art buffs. “ It went r e ally well but we didn’t sell anything. Because it’s so new, people are a little bit standoffish,” he explains. “But that doesn’t bother me - I’ll just keep making stuff and one day the flood gates will open. “Nothing like t h is h a s ever been done before so people don’t quite know what to make of it.”

The new face of art: Terence Stewart shows off his framed 3D artwork “The Face”, (above) made out of spider webs.

“No question is too silly.”

Here is what the technicians of MCN offered as answers from the perspective of a home user. Q) I received a prompt from my antivirus software that is asking for permission for a program to access the Internet. Huh? A) This is a security feature in many internet security programs. It is intended to give the user control over which programs are allowed access to the internet. When a program isn’t known by the protection software it will ask the user what action to take. Q) Why is my computer always prompting me for permission for certain tasks? A) This is a security feature that was introduced in Windows Vista. It asks permission when you want to perform certain tasks on the computer. This is intended to prevent malicious software from being able to do so automatically. Q) Is it really necessary to install all the annoying updates? A) Yes! Vulnerabilities are continually discovered in software which could be exploited by malevolent software. Updates are created to repair these vulnerabilities along with other issues that arise. Q) What should I backup on my computer? A) Anything you do not wish to lose. This usually includes documents, photos, videos and any data associated with programs you use regularly (ie. Genealogy software, emails, Microsoft Money) Q) How do I protect my files from other people using the computer? A) If the computer is used for business purposes then we would advise against allowing other people to access to the machine (i.e. children) and would also recommend putting a password on the machine. If however it is a family computer, separate logons can be created which in turn can be password protected. Q) How can I ban websites from my computer? A) There is parental control software available which can limit and monitor internet access. Q) How can I recover deleted data? A) Check the recycle bin on the desktop to see if the missing files are there and restore them. If the data is not in the recycle bin then shut down the machine and bring it to your IT specialist who will have tools that may be able to recover the files. Q) How can I make my PC run faster? A) Old applications that will no longer be used can be removed from the computer. If that does not help then increasing the RAM may help. RAM

Makeup by design

Fashion Week There’s plenty to be excited about with Footloose’s stunning winter range. We have everything covered from high fashion to leisurely comfort. Mid-height heels are big news this season and just the thing to wear with tailored skirts with nipped in waists. Lace up brogue styles and ballerina flats are also featuring strongly in all the fashion magazines. Black is strong again and combines well with garments such as dark ink (navy) which is making a welcome

comeback. Polished Grey is also a favourite and looks great when combined with texture. Warm wood tones of Mocha, Olive Caramel, Taupe and Winter Beige are to the fore with splashes of colour coming from rich winter Reds and Plums. You can view the Footloose winter range anytime but if you purchase new season shoes or boots during fashion week - March 21-25, you will receive a free

gift with your purchase. We also invite you to join us at any one of our three styling sessions which will be held 5pm to 6pm on Wednesday the 23rd or Thursday the 24th at Footloose, and again on Thursday April 7 at 5pm-6pm at The Dressing Room. Contact your local Footloose store. Phone 579 1571 to book in for one of these fabulous and fun evenings.

By Celeste Lodewyk With many Christchurch mothers giving birth in Marlborough, Wairau Hospital midwife Derryn McArtha is appealing for donations of knitwear for newborns. The maternity ward’s store of woollen singlets and beanies in particular are getting low and with more Christchurch women relocating to Marlborough, Derryn fears they may run out. “A lot of booties, hats and singlets have already gone out the door and we are predicting more Christchurch women to arrive in the near future. The only problem is that our general stores are dropping and we urgently need more. “In addition there are some mums with very little, even in our community so we want to be able to help them by giving their babies something to use from birth,” she says. Any colour or pattern is welcome, Derryn says. “Babies don’t mind if their singlets are coloured or beanies are striped, just as long as they are kept warm. “If you can help us out staff, mums and babies would be greatly appreciative,” she says. If you can help by donating woollen singlets and beanies, you can drop them into the Maternity Ward, (Ward One) at Wairau Hospital.

Child Cancer Appeal Month March 2011

‘No child or their family walking Parttheofchildhood your cancer journey should ever feel alone’

COMMUNITY since 1869

Foundation aims for $1 million This year the 2011 Child Cancer Foundation National Appeal will run throughout the entire month of March, with the nationwide Beads of Courage Day (street collection) on Friday, March 25. The Foundation is aiming to raise $1 million during Child Cancer Appeal Month to support children with cancer and their families. Three children are diagnosed with cancer each week in New Zealand and collectively undergo a total of 75,000 treatments and procedures annually. Each child and their family is provided with a dedicated Child Cancer Foundation Family Support Coordinator for their entire cancer journey. The Foundation receives no funding from the government or from any other cancer charities.

In response to a need in the community, Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors have opened the Sowman Lounge – a new reception area ideal for get togethers after the funeral. The Sowman Lounge is in the family home once occupied by Rita and Geoffrey Sowman for many years while Geoffrey ran the funeral business next door. It was officially opened recently by their three sons, Terry, Philip and Alistair Sowman, who also worked for the family business over the years. The Sowman Lounge and the adjacent Mayfield Chapel are set amid prize winning gardens.of collectors on Beads

Whitehaven Wine Company has brought home a bag of medals from the 2011 Royal Easter Show. The Renwick wine company bagged three gold medals for its flagship Sauvignon Blanc, 2009 Pinot Noir and its limited release 2009 “Greg” Pinot Noir. This will be the second gold for the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc which was also singled out for praise at the NZ International Wine Show in 2010. This is a fantastic result for local company founded 15-years ago by the White family. Whitehaven was also awarded silver medals for its 2009 and 2010 Rieslings and its 2010 Gewurztraminer.

Whitehaven’s senior winemaker Sam Smail says Whitehaven’s Sauvignon Blanc is a classic Marlborough savvy. “We pride ourselves on using only Marlborough grapes so it’s very satisfying to be recognised for producing a wine that so genuinely reflects the characteristics of this region,” he said. Whitehaven managing director Sue White is thrilled with the six medals, including the growing momentum of the company’s Pinot Noir. “Both our 2009 Pinot, and the special Pinot we produce from time to time in memory of my late husband Greg, have each won Gold at the Royal Easter Show,” says Sue. “It shows that Marlborough is now being recognised alongside Central Otago and Martinborough as a source of high quality Pinot Noir,” she said. Last year Whitehaven’s Pinot Noir 2008 collected medals at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, the NZ International Wine Show and the International Wine Challenge UK and was given a 5-star ranking by New Zealand Cuisine magazine which named it one of New Zealand’s top ten Pinots.

PIZZA HUT IS BACK! Opportunity to buy into an established food brand with a proven track record from $175,000 Pizza Hut, New Zealand’s biggest and most popular pizza chain with international backing has over 90 stores throughout the country, with sales of over $60 million a year. After two to years of suboptimal performance, Pizza Hut is now showing strong growth in both sales and profitability. The chain is operated by Restaurant Brands along with its other two large franchises, KFC and Starbucks Coffee. Restaurant Brands and Yum Restaurants International (the franchisor) have decided to sell a number of stores to independent franchisees. This will provide opportunity for entrepreneurial business people to become owner-operators and maximise their returns whilst supported by the considerable resources of Restaurant Brands in New Zealand and Pizza Hut worldwide. The Blenheim store is available for franchising. Sales turnover from $11,000 per week, EBITDA from $50,000 per annum. Priced at $175,000 includes an existing store, fit out, fixed assets and customer base. Interested? The children of John Street Preschool have recently visited the Millennium Art Gallery to see the “Open Page” exhibition. As a follow up to this author Gavin Bishop visited the children at the centre last Friday. By inviting Gavin Bishop into the centre the children were able to see who had

drawn the pictures in the gallery and also the Author and Illustrator of some of their favourite books. Gavin read his favourite story from his childhood and then the children asked him some questions, finding out some very interesting facts about Gavin’s preference to illustrate rather than write.

Fishers flout the rules Capitalising on good weather and fishing conditions, recreational fishers have been enjoying a bumper season. The Ministry of Fisheries reports generally good behaviour from the majority of fishers, who are aware of, understand and follow the rules. However, the fish thieves have been out in force as well. Their indiscriminate pillaging of our fisheries, particularly the sensitive paua fishery, has been more uncaring and extreme than ever. Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Phil Heatley said he was sickened that

some people continued to flout the rules. “It’s a problem everywhere. These people are stealing from all New Zealanders, including future generations, and they must be nailed to the fence.” Acting Chief Executive Andrew Coleman said he was delighted to report that January had seen a record number of calls to the 0800 4 POACHER line. “For the first time ever we received more than 1000 calls – 1004 to be exact – in a single month, and a number of these led directly to apprehensions,” Mr Coleman said.

Q – “What must I do to stay saved?” (Peter – question asked in literature he handed to one of our young people while we were out witnessing about Christ on Market Street) A – Nothing! “What must I do to stay saved?” is a question not found anywhere in the Bible. “What must I do to be saved?” is a Bible question found in Acts 16:30 with the answer given, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” According to the false doctrine in this article (with the details of the RCI in Blenheim on it): 1) “We stay saved because of our continuing..relationship with Him [Jesus]. 2) Some version (not the King James Bible) quotes Heb 13:5 as saying, “the circumstances of life will alter and we must stay saved through them…” 3) Although the article does not explicitly answer the question, it strongly infers one stays saved through prayer, manifestations of the Holy Spirit in one’s life, obeying the oversight of the local church, maintaining good morals and remaining faithful to Christ. Apparently this article by the RCI teaches the old false doctrine that one in this age can lose their salvation unless they maintain it. The Bible however clears up this misconception and false teaching: 1) God saves us through the gospel which involves only two things: repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ – Acts 20:20 & 24 2) When a person trusts Jesus as their Saviour, God comes to live inside them – this gives them eternal life (John 3:16; 3:36; 5:24; 6:46) – eternal life by definition can never end, whether it is maintained or not 3) We are kept saved, not by our effort, good works or some Christian maintenance programme, but we are rather kept saved BY THE POWER OF GOD – John 10:27-29; Rom 8:38-39; Phil 1:6; II Tim 1:12; I Peter 1:4-5 4) Even if we stop believing, God will remain faithful to us – II Tim 2:13 What Jesus did on the cross for us and continues to do from heaven for us today is ALL sufficient – beware of the church or man who will attempt to drag you back to trusting your own fleshly efforts over the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Fishery Officers can’t be everywhere and we’re very reliant on the public to notice and report bad behaviour. Responsible people are angry that their fisheries are being abused and they’re taking it upon themselves to help do something about it.” Penalties for fisheries offences range from $250 to $250,000 with vehicles, boats and dive gear liable to seizure and forfeiture upon conviction. For more serious offences, convicted offenders can be liable to terms of imprisonment of up to five years.

Blenheim upsets with ‘Stock Shock’ event win By Celeste Lodewyk The annual Stock Shock event was held in Nelson on Saturday night and what looked like an easy win for our over-the-hill rivals instead proved to be an upset as Blenheim took the win. Eastern States stock car driver (28e) Ralph Gillespie dominated the points table with his two seconds and a first placing. With no North Islanders and only one Canterbury contender, Nelson held high hopes of winning the meeting. But with strong displays of team racing on all sides Ralph proved too elusive and managed to pick his way through the pack, aided by the defense tactics of (12e) Zak and (71e) Sam Thompson. Ralph finished in 1st while fellow team mates Ricco Gray came in at 5th, Zak at 12th and Sam at 16th.

It was revealed on Sunday that star NZ Breakers players Kirk Penney and Thomas Abercrombie are keen to take their talents to Europe or even the NBA, and I can’t say I’m surprised. You only have to look at All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen, who plays for English soccer club Blackburn Rovers, to realise players who outgrow the level of competition offered in New Zealand need to head overseas to extend themselves in these world games. The Breakers were gracefully

handed the services of Penney for the current season after his latest tilt at an NBA contract came undone, though that may have been a different story had he not been trying to break into the heavyweight San Antonio Spurs franchise. The point guard showed in the World Championships last year he can foot it with the best of them and, despite his size, it is remarkable he has not been snapped up by someone. Then you have Abercrombie the most exciting talent to emerge in New Zealand basketball in recent memory and one which led the Sky Sports commentator at the World Champs to label him “a human highlight reel”. He has it

In other happenings: The Black Caps take on Sri Lanka in a must-win match in the Cricket World Cup on Friday - must-win as a loss will see a likely quarterfinal match-up against India or South Africa. The fitness of paceman Kyle Mills will be crucial to their chances.

His jump of 3.79m beat the previous record of 3.67m, held by Timothy Richards. Coach Stephanie Southey says the two achievements are significant milestones for the club. “It’s awesome for them and for the club,” she says. “It’s not often that we break records at all. They’re very talented and

By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough’s only women’s rugby team is appealing for more members to replenish numbers as the 2011 season approaches. The Central women’s rugby team had around 20 players last season and is currently sitting at 15. The team’s manager Mandy Anderson says last season’s side had great team spirit, something she aims to reinstall in the new team. “We have players as young as 13-years and from all walks of life. The whole point is to give-it-a-go, try something new and hopefully kick some Nelson butt,” she laughs.

all: threepointers, s l a m Damian George dunks, presence under the hoop and incredible defence. With any luck, these players will reach higher honours, and that is something to be celebrated.

Junior records broken By Damian George The Marlborough Children’s Athletics Club is celebrating the success of two promising young athletes after another long-standing record was broken recently. Nine-year-old Torban Otway broke a 30-year-old record when he won the nine-year-old boys 400m race in a time of 1m 12.9s at the Tasman Champs at the end of last month. It broke a record which had stood since 1981, when Stephen Mullany ran a time of 1m 14.2s. The competition, which includes teams from Marlborough, Takaka, Motueka and Richmond, is one of several meets held annually in which the title is competed for. The success follows the achieve-

Last season the team was placed third behind Stoke and Waimea. “We are looking for 10 more players so if you want to know more, come on down to one of our training sessions and see

what it is all about,” she says. Training sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm at the Central clubrooms at Lansdowne Park, or alternatively you can contact Mandy on 578 3474.

Flood family’s link to speedway

SALOONS: Tony Flood, pictured with his sons Robert and Daniel has been involved in local speedway since 1974. His business Radiator Services Blenheim is the only business to have continually sponsored Eastern States’ events since 1982, including this weekend’s South Island Saloon Championship. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

By Celeste Lodewyk Local businessman Tony Flood is the second out of three generations to be involved in Marlborough’s speedway scene. The Flood family’s speedway contribution first began with Tony’s father who was involved with the building of the current track as well as being one of the club’s guarantors when it came to lending money from the bank. His passion and enthusiasm for speedway fast rubbed off onto Tony who began racing saloons when the class was first introduced to Marlborough in 1974. “Those were great times,” Tony laughs. “I had a 1956 EIP Vauxhall which on a good day pulled around

60 horsepower. “It was a lot of fun and I even managed to roll it once just days before I was to be married,” he says. From 1980 to 1982 Tony was also involved in the building of the current track. He went on to race saloons every year until 1986 where he took a break to set up his business, Radiator Services Blenheim. It was his business which in turn became involved as the principal sponsor of many saloons events, including this weekend’s South Island Saloon Championships. “Radiator Services Blenheim is the only business to have sponsored the club since every year since 1982, this is something my family is very

proud of,” he says. Aside from racing and financial sponsorship, Tony also served on the club’s committee for eight years and club captain for five-years. Tony’s sons Robert and Daniel have now completed the third generation link to Eastern States with Robert beginning his saloon racing in 2007 and Daniel in 2010. “You never know there may be a fourth yet,” he chuckles. “My two young grandsons are already showing an interest in motor sport.” “Looking back I will say that I wouldn’t do anything differently, I love speedway and plan to continue on with supporting my sons in their racing as well as future events,” he says.
