St Paddy’s Day By Celeste Lodewyk “St Patrick’s Day is one day where it’s acceptable to throw caution into the wind and enjoy the day. “You may not get a lot done but it’s great fun to live it up like the Irish,” laughs Matt Ryan left, and Ryan McQuillan. Tomorrow St Patrick’s Day will be celebrated all around Marlborough in various forms of tradition and hilarity. For Ryan, Cornerstone Bar and Restaurant owner the day is the perfect excuse for him to celebrate his family’s Irish heritage as well as remember his younger days living in Dublin. As a secondary school student Ryan experienced Ireland for the first time through a school exchange and at age 18-years he decided to return for a three year stint where he worked in a pub and played rugby. “We were having the time of our lives,” he laughs. Vital life lessons Outward Bound turns 50 years Dan Moore talks about his adventure By Annabelle Latz When Dan Moore’s eyes started to fail him on the final stages of his 67km haul down the Waimakariri River earlier this month, he was gutted. He said it was a surreal moment as he was assisted from the water, knowing he was not going to get on his bike to continue his quest for 6th place in the Speights Coast to Coast Longest Day competition. The sixth place spot was taken by Blenheim’s Jeremy McKenzie. But the emotional battle that Dan suffered from this freak occurrence was softened by his great capacity for mental strength. And for this, he thanks his job at Outward Bound. Dan is curriculum manager, and said he learns as much as he teaches, in terms of developing mental and physical skills. Outward Bound turns 50 this year, and has been a prominent with introducing challenges and thrills that the outdoors provides. “It’s really interesting looking at this year’s Coast to Coast result. What I went through in terms of mental challenges is exactly what we put our students through. It has really put it in perspective.”

Dan Moore on the Waimakariri River earlier this month.

Dan had laser surgery six months ago, and it was a freak occurrence that while on the kayak his corneas became inflamed. “It was really really frustrating. It was such a big build up for Coast to Coast. But I just have to keep my head up and stay positive. Last year Dan finished second in the Two-Day Open Men’s event. The natural timbered buildings, the long jetty, a small fleet of cutters, the classrooms in the native bush, moun-

tains, rivers and seaways of Marlborough; Outward Bound is still in its original location from 1962, in Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds, and has been coined the most perfectly situated Outward Bound school in the world. Dan said the essence of Outward Bound is about striving to be your best, and helping others to be their best. “People gain great tangible things they can take away with them” said Dan. He said the best part of his job was seeing groups of

strangers develop into a team, and bringing out their own confidence. “It’s about seeing people understanding there is more in them than they think.” There are many events planned for the 50th anniversary, including the Kathmandu Adventure Series at the end of March, incorporating mountain biking, kayaking, trail running and simple navigation. See www.kathmanduadventure.co.nz for more details.

St Patrick’s Day - What’s On: From Page 1. “One thing I did miss when I was away was the weather. The weather in Ireland wasn’t that great, I think that’s why they spend so much time inside the pubs,” he jokes. Ryan insists it wasn’t the Irish influence which steered him toward owning a pub himself, but says his experience in Ireland certainly gave him the enthusiasm. “Going to Ireland was like earning a degree in pub life, but I think I was always

going to be in the pub game. “At Cornerstone we will have Guinness on tap and we generally sell a few pints on the day, but really it’s a day for the Irish pubs, I just enjoy the celebrations,” he grins.

ST PATrick’S DAy celeBrATioNS: Paddy Barry’s irish Pub, Blenheim:

Irish breakfast starts at 9am. Irish dancing girls at 1pm and again at 7pm.

A special Irish menu has been set for the day including delicacies such as a Guinness mud cake, traditional Irish stews and Paddy Barry’s famous Guinness pies to name a few. Giveaways throughout the day and live music from 5pm onwards. Biddy kates irish Bar :

Owner Terry Sloan was unavailable for comment, but a staff member said there will be plenty of St Patrick’s Day fun on the day.

Seumus’s irish Bar, Picton:

Full of traditional Irish fun and flavour Seumus’s Irish Bar in Picton will begin with Irish music playing all day from 8am to 1am, accompanied by plenty of traditional Irish food, including Seamus’s Guinness and oyster shots. Loads of giveaways throughout the day and there will be two prizes of $100 to the best St Patrick’s Day dressed girl and guy.

Country star shines Story by Celeste Lodewyk Matthew McNeilly’s status as a rising country musician has now been given an extra boost after being awarded a scholarship and placement at a prestigious school in Tamworth, Australia’s country music capital. The placement was awarded after Matthew won overall runner up at last year’s Gold Guitar Awards and will see him travel away for a fortnight at the end of June. “I have heard the placement is very workshop focused on song writing so I am looking forward to exploring different techniques and formulas on writing which is an area I am new to,” he says. Not only will Matthew be learning from Australia’s top country music tutors, but will also be making contacts from some of the country’s top song writers. “Apart from the learning I am really eager to meet people who are part of an industry that I see myself working toward and getting into full time as a career,” he says. At age 23 Matthew has already established himself as a guitar tutor and will be embarking on some professional recording with local studio Hear No Evil.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The past year has been a long and painful journey for local woman Karen Scott after surviving being buried in rubble during Christchurch’s February 22 earthquake. Her ongoing road toward recovery from the traumatic event has been a source of inspiration behind her newly released book, Rising from the Rubble. It was this book which has earned her the Global Publishing Group Achievement Award, presented to her at an event in Melbourne, Australia last Saturday. “It was a complete surprise, I had no idea I was being presented this award so it was a very emotional moment for me,” she says. The book which was released this month shares inspirational stories from athletes and business people as well as a number of personal experiences from the earthquakes.

Fit to get the right bike

graham henderson and Brent ackroyd will open Bikefit’s doors on Monday, on Market st.

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Some of the bikes compact down to take on the bus, while some would nearly go faster than a bus. Bikefit is opening its doors on Monday to serve the needs for everyone involved in the sport. Graham Henderson, co-owner, has been involved in the sport since the 1960’s. As chairman of Cuddon Cycling Marlborough and the vice president of the Tasman Cycling Centre, he has seen the popularity of the sport flourish amongst people of all ages and ability. “It doesn’t matter whether you are a top cyclist, or child. Cycling is also a great alternative for athletes carrying injuries.” Graham has competed in road cycling and track disciplines, and if often involved in managing the policing for the Forrest Grape Ride, which is on next weekend. “Cycling has always been my passion.”

He’s seen many changes in the trends of cycling. “The biggest change would that there are a lot of people doing it, not necessarily for racing, but also for recreation.” Brent Ackroyd, also co-owner, was a bike mechanic before he started this venture, and he spends his spare time on the mountain bike tracks and road biking. He said facilities like the Wither Hills mountain bike tracks and the paths around the Taylor River are great initiatives to get people on bike seats. “These facilities have been huge for cycling here.” He can’t wait to open on Monday, combining his expertise with Graham, and sports scientist Andrew Jamieson who will also be working at Bikewise. “It’s my passion for sport, and now it’s my passion for work!” Brent will be competing in the Forrest Grape Ride next weekend, in the teams event, aiming for about 2h 40 mins over the 101km course.

New tutor from San Diego NMIT has expanded its Aquaculture programme on the back of growing confidence in the aquaculture industry in the Top of the South. Dr Gallagher has a PhD from Oregan State University and more than 25 years’ international experience in the marine and aquaculture sector.

She says she brings “enthusiasm, fisheries and shellfish expertise – and a Californian accent,” to the role. “My passion has always been working with invertebrate species – abalone or paua, shrimp, black lipped pearl oysters and giant clams, including growing, seeding and marketing giant clams,” she says.

San Diego marine scientist Charmaine Gallagher has been welcomed on as a new Diploma and Certificate in Aquaculture tutor at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. NMIT has employed a new tutor and also expanded its facilities at Cawthron Institute’s Aquaculture Park at Glenduan.

Andrew will be part-time at Bikefit, fitting and testing bikes for customers, and offering training programmes. “We can fit the bike perfectly, and do the fitness training programme,” said Graham. Graham, with a background in sales and insurance, said the retail side of work will be his biggest professional change. “It will be a learning challenge.” Brent is new to the business-side of work, and said office work will be a change for him. “The challenge for me will be the number crunching and the paper work.” Graham and Brent are looking forward to working with the wide range of clients, and being able to provide an overall service of advice, bike fitting, bike repairs, and training programmes to help people get started, or train for a race. “We are really out there for the family people,” said Graham.

The GAS Renwick service station has had a change of hands with new owners Ray and Maria Cooper purchasing and taking over the business on January 31. Previously owned by Rata Harper and Anthony Smith, GAS Renwick continues to be owned locally and its three permanent staff, Bruce, Belle and Dale have remained with the business. Previous owners of the Picton Superette on Waikawa Road, Ray and Maria say the purchase of GAS Renwick was a new venture for the couple. “We have always liked Renwick and when we saw the opportunity to purchase the business we decided to go for it. “So here we are, pumping petrol,” Ray laughs. GAS Renwick operates Monday to Saturday 5am-7pm, and Sunday 7am-7pm.

Buying iPads for counciLLors? Not sure that I agree that ‘Buy iPads local’, the council should buy iPads for councillors. If they want them they should buy them on exorbitant salaries. I bet the council purchased 3G models with larger than the smallest memories, all unnecessary. Now question is, who pays for data transfer? If the council provide WiFi then who at council makes sure that data transfer is switched off? Who pays for them to have WiFi at home? Who pays for data allowance on their home phones? Gazlor

Dear Ed, Thank you so much for the Weekend Events Guide on page 13 in the “Friday Sun”. With so many events to pick from going on during the weekend it is hard to choose which event to go to. Seeing them set out on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday made it easy to plan the weekend. Also congratulations on the size of

your print type. My more mature eyes found your font size easy to read. I feel for sure there will be a large number of your readers who will also appreciate this easy to read paper. Thank you once again, Sincerely yours,

Dear Ed, Recent letter writers have suggested the MDC did not ‘buy local‘ with its recent purchase of I Pads. It is Council’s responsibility to get best value for ratepayers’ money when it makes spending decisions. The I Pads were bought from Gen i, a franchise operation of Telecom. As it happens, the franchise

owner for the Nelson-Marlborough region has outlets in both Nelson and Blenheim. Like other businesses in Blenheim, ranging from Australian-owned Harvey Norman to Nelson-owned Tasman Glass, this telecommunications business operates locally and employs local staff. Mayor Alistair Sowman

Rude jet boats Dear Ed, What gives with a jet boat and water skier on the lower Wairau River ripping up and down past other water users at high speed, for example rowers and recreational fishermen? My understanding is within 50 metres of other water

users, a boat has to slow to 5km an hour or something like that. Besides that jet hoon didn’t need to come down from the rowing club launch to Baldicks Bend. It could’ve gone upstream. It was rude and inconsiderate. N Wilson

Manners, anyone? Dear Ed, Where have manners gone? The other day I held the door open at the mailbox centre in town for a woman. She breezed through and not a glance or a word of thanks. On the ferry bridge at Spring Creek, an agricultural machine barged on against the give way sign and thundered

over. Young people rush through doors ahead of adults. Arrogant boy and girl racers give “finger” gestures to adults old enough to be their grandparents. What price is politeness? A decent society? You have failed Muldoon, Lange, Bolger, Shipley, Clark and now Key. Shelby Wright

Now living in Titirangi with his family, he is busy writing food columns, and has a monthly ‘pop up’ restaurant in Auckland, featuring different countries each time. This year he will travel to Vietnam and Europe this year taking culinary food tours. “It’s all a learning curve for me, it’s a new career, it’s a matter of learning from different people.” Since he was a child, Brett loved spending time in the kitchen. He spent 10 years abroad, and his reaction to eating a great meal at a restaurant was to tell the chef about it. “I’d knock on the kitchen door and ask if I could watch or help to cook it. Then I’d go home and recreate it for my friends.” When asked what his favourite meal was, it was impossible to answer. But having visited South East Asia many times, curries are what fascinate him the most. “They are so diverse and complex, it’s my style of food.” He urges kiwis to use local fresh produce, and says Marlborough spoils its residents for choice. “It’s got mussels, salmon and wine, it’s a place of abundance.

You don’t even have to leave!” As a youngster he spent many family holidays at the family batch in Kaikoura, and Marlborough is a place he could see himself settling in the future. Brett is looking forward to working with local chef Chris Fortune this weekend. “He’s a character and fantastic for Marlborough. He’s a great guy!” They have hosted cooking demonstrations before, and it always works well.

“We always get a few laughs, and everyone seems to enjoy the banter.” The festival will also feature kids activities, food, wine and beer, competitions, and market stalls. Main Act Made in New Zealand featuring Shane Cortese, Jackie Clarke, Frankie Stevens and Rikki Morris and a 5 piece band will perform NZ songs from the 60’s through to today. For an Irish flavour, Irish band Shenanigans will be playing.

Car show makes debut in Blenheim Story by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim will be playing host to some very unique and special cars this Sunday as the Charity Classic Car Show makes its debut at Waterlea Racecourse. Organiser Pat Pascoe says there will be more than 150 cars on show, one of which has just been confirmed as being a Mini Couper that was built in Nelson to race on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. “This mini was designed to beat the 1000cc world land speed record so we are excited to have it as part of the show,” Pat says. Another draw card for the show will be a Maybach saloon car from a Nelson museum, the only one in the southern hemisphere of its kind, says Pat.

Comedy tour in Blenheim this evening By Annabelle Latz Kiwi comedy is tuning out its finest ring at the Marlborough Civic Theatre this evening, when the CC Real NZ Comedy Tour, featuring Dai Henwood, Steve Wrigley, Ben Hurley and Vaughan King takes the stage. With more than a few comedy awards spread amongst them, and a weekly slot on TV3 with 7 Days, it’s clear they love what they do, drawing from natural interests in theatre sports and stand up comedy. Steve and Di, now Auckland, haunted the same high school corridors of Wellington College, and describe Steve and Ben as ‘aggressive dairy farmers from Hawera’ followed by a cheeky giggle. “We all have a different approach, the only common thing is that we all have some sort of beard!” said Steve. When they get together for a gig it’s all about fun. “The show is always better when you are performing as mates” said Dai.

Dai and Steve both spent time in their late teens and early twenties in Blenheim and Nelson working. Steve had a go at cherry picking in Renwick, and taking labels off wine bottles. “That was hard work!” Dai knew of the annual battle Blenheim and Nelson have when it comes to having the most sunshine hours. He boldly made the statement in a Nelson pub that Blenheim was sunnier. “I almost got punched!” They both agreed it was great fun performing in smaller centres like Blenheim, at great locations like the theatre here. “The smaller towns in New Zealand are awesome, people get straight into it. If you put in the effort to put a good show on, people respect that and come along,” said Steve. The performance is from 8pm10pm. For more information, phone 520 8560.

A preferred option for landscape design for the Council-owned land at 2 High Street next to the Taylor River amphitheatre will be in the public arena for feedback for another four weeks before the Council formally seeks expressions of interest from prospective tenants for the site. The Council has selected a design prepared by local architect Tim Barton which retains a flat area at road level while allowing for a gentle gradient of public green space and walkway down to the riverside. Councillors are satisfied the design complies with the Council’s Urban Design Strategy. However this design option is

estimated to cost about $650,000 to develop so a commercial tenant would be required on the site to fund the landscaping. “A commercial lease would be necessary to finance the work if it was to go ahead any time soon on this site as the Council is not in a position to allocate new funds to such a project at present,” says Mayor Alistair Sowman. The Mayor says, after the Council’s Community and Financial Planning Committee approved the design option last month, the comment seems to have been largely positive. “We think this is a design option which allows space for commer-

cial activity as well as public access and recreation, and perhaps a piece of public art at a later date, while still recognising that the river is a central part of the town landscaping,” he said. “Councillors believe this is the right option to pursue but there is time yet for feedback to ensure we’re in tune with public opinion,” said Mr Sowman. Details such as the maximum dimensions of a building footprint will be available when the Council publicly advertises for expressions of interest in the site. It is intended that the opportunity would be advertised outside Marlborough, said the Mayor.

Danielle Atkinson is a member of the Omega Leo Club, which involves anyone between 18 and 30 years old who wants to make their spare time interesting and challenging. Omega Leo Club, ‘Leadership, Experience, Opportunity’, is part of the greater Lion Club Scheme, with the aim of involving younger people, both through community service and social interaction. Danielle, 20, and a waitress in Blenheim, was part of the Leo club at Marlborough Girls’ College, and the natural progression was to continue her involvement. She likes getting people together to help organise events in the community. And taking afternoon tea around to rest homes, helping at sports days, or just organising fun days for young people to spend together. “Being part of the club helps the community. I like going back to the community and doing something to help people.” She said this specific age group will be great for community initiatives, because the young work force can use their networking

people in the group and socialising. It just depends how big we want to go, we can do things big and small.” There will be a meeting for anyone interested in Omega Leo Club, at The Clubs of Marlborough on Thursday April 5 at 7.30pm in the boardroom.

Blooming business Story and photo by Stephanie Choate Like one of the many flowers in her nursery, Karen Hall has grown Islington Gardens from a tiny seed of an idea to a blooming business. She started the company 18 years ago as a small wholesale operation selling deciduous azaleas. Now, Islington is a vibrant maze of bright blossoms, multi-coloured foliage, young trees, native shrubs and vegetables— hundreds of varieties of plants. “We’re very focused on selling happy and healthy plants,” she said. Like her customers, Hall loves shopping for the plants she stocks. Her favorite activity, though, takes place in what she jokingly refers to as “the ugly bay,” where she brings plants that are “tired or tatty” back to life. “I love fixing plants,” she said. “I love that rewarding feeling of chopping it off at the knees, repotting it, fertilizing it, caring for it until it’s back to 100 percent.” At Islington Gardens, they strive to make sure all the plants they sell are in excellent shape. “My best bit of advice is probably buying something that’s healthy right at the start,” she said. “Once something’s sick, that’s when the bugs and other diseases set in.” As important as buying a healthy plant is buying the right plant— one suited to Marlborough’s

Tips

Drying Herbs Do this now to use over the winter months.... Harvest herbs to dry for winter use in your cooking. It’s best to cut stems before they flower. Hang bunches to dry in a warm, airy room out of direct sunlight. Easy herbs to dry include: sage, oregano, thyme, dill and bay. Also Stevia (natural sugar). Get the whole plant out before the first frosts hit.

Quick watering tips! • It’s better to give plants a deep bath weekly than a daily shower! • Repair hoses and fix outdoor taps that drip to avoid wasting water • Spread organic mulch to prevent the loss of soil moisture through evaporation • Water storage crystals added to potting mix can help crops grown in containers to withstand drought • When your soil is sandy, dig in compost - it improves moisture retention

climate and the garden’s conditions. Buying an exciting new plant only to watch it die in the first frost is a discouraging experience for a gardener, not to mention the plant. Local advice is invaluable in that respect. Between the four of them,

Islington’s employees have decades of experience. Hall herself started working in the ground when she was 17, growing vegetables for an IHC program. Hall also said it’s also important to keep the soil in good shape with compost, fertilizer, or a blood and bone

treatment—and to get out in the garden as much as possible. “It’s better to spend a little bit of time in the garden, often,” she said. “It’s a lot more enjoyable if you can maintain it rather than battling the weeds.”

Raymond and Allison Ching left, say their lovely lilies are through no skill of their own, but of Mother Nature’s. They moved to their Murphys Rd home 11 years ago, and a year ago many lilies, Lilium Loingirolburn, appeared. “The birds must have carried them here!” said Allison. Gardening keeps them busy, since they moved off the family farm near Blenheim 30 years ago. “There are a few weeds if you look closely,” laughed Raymond.

Celebrating the mighty Angus By Annabelle Latz Next Sunday marks the start of a series of opportunities to learn all about Angus cattle. Four registered Angus studs in Marlborough are opening their gates up to more than 100 people involved and interested in the industry, for the Angus Ward Tour, ‘The Back Country Tour.’ Paul Hickman is chairman of the Nelson/ Marlborough Ward of the New Zealand Angus Association. He lives at Taimate, near Ward, where his family has been involved in breeding Angus cattle for decades, and he currently runs 500. The Hickman family has had their Taimate stud registered since 1955. “It was started then by my late grandfather Jack and his brother Tom.” In that time there have been a lot of changes in the industry. He said the collection of performance data has been the biggest challenge, with almost all stud breeders now recording details such as parentage, birth weight, weight at 200 days (weaning), 400 days, and 600 days, data from when meat is ultra sound scanned at 400 days to see fat content on the rump and rib, and intramuscular fat percentage, (IMF), which shows the amount of marbling, (EMA, or Eye Muscle Area.)

“This shows how big your steak is.” This data, plus more, is all noted down. Because of this data collaboration every registered Angus animal in the world is comparable on paper. “There’s a lot of paperwork with figures, every bit of data is recorded” Paul has seen trend changes in taste requirements. Every culture has its own tastes for meat. The Asian market tends to prefer the marbled meat, while the Europe and Australasia tend to prefer the leaner meat. “The more marbled, the tastier it is, but then there’s the big lean meat push. You can’t go too far one way, it’s got to balance.” Paul said the Angus Pure brand is making a real change in the industry, and is going exceptionally well and growing enormously every year. “It has been great for the Angus brand in general.” Paul said it has taken two years of organising to get this tour underway, but well worth it. “I guess I’ve been in charge of leading a small but very committed and dedicated committee. The logistics of 120 people going back country has really been quite an effort to organise!” He said if it wasn’t for such great sponsors

Paul HIckman and his son Matthew on their taimate Angus stud, near Ward.

it would be very hard to get something like this off the ground. Merial/Lancare, NZ Farmers Livestock, Allflex NZ, Landcorp, PGG Wrightson and Rabobank are just a few who have helped with the venture. Paul said New Zealand as a whole is lucky with its resources for feeding, and farmers don’t have to rely heavily on grain or alternative feed supplements. He said it’s a real advantage on the global market to have outdoor farming and chemi-

cal free options so easily at hand. “Just whatever grass grows, that’s what we feed them on. That’s our advantage, with all natural feeding. And the Angus cattle beast is a very natural, easy finisher.” As well as AGM’s and dinners, the four days of touring, finishing on March 28, will include visits to Brackenfield Angus, Waterfall Angus, Woodbank Angus, Taimate, Upcott Station, Muller Station, Molesworth Station, Rainbow Station, and Martin Farming Angus.

Does Marlborough need more salmon farms? By Annabelle Latz More salmon farms are needed in the Marlborough Sounds to keep up with consumer demand both from New Zealand and the rest of the world. That is the view of NZ King Salmon. It wants more farms in the Marlborough Sounds, and has submitted a request to the Environmental Protection Authority for eight new marine sites, encompassing nine new farms. On October 3 2011, the EPA received a proposal from NZ King Salmon for two plan change requests to the Marlborough Sounds Resource Management Plan (MSRMP) and applications for resource consents for salmon farms and salmon farming at nine sites in the Marlborough Sounds. Eight sites are new, and one site – at White Horse Rock – currently has consent for a mussel farm. The eight new sites include four in Pelorus Sound, one at Port Gore, two at Queen Charlotte Sound, and

one at Tory Channel. NZ King Salmon aquaculture general manager Mark Preece said the two plan changes needed will create a new salmon farming zone, and address the plan provisions reliant to the allocation of the right to apply for coastal permits for marine farming. Currently, NZ King Salmon operates five salmon farms at Otanerau, Raukaka, Te Pangu, Forsyth Bar/ Waihinau, and Clay Point in Pelorus and Queen Charlotte Sounds. Mark said salmon have a particularly high requirement for water quality, so the company endeavours to avoid degrading the growing environment. “NZ King Salmon also wants to play its part in achieving the goal of $1 billion in sales for the aquaculture industry by 2025,” said Mark. Public submissions to the Board of Inquiry need to be in by May 2, and a public hearing is planned for mid-September. This will follow the final evidence from NZ King Salmon and submitters from June

through to August. A decision to the public will be made in December.

NZ KING SALMON fActS:

• NZ King Salmon currently produces approximately 8,500 metric tones of Kind salmon annually, accounting for 70% of New Zealand’s salmon production. • King salmon is New Zealand’s largest fin fish aquaculture producer, employing more than 455 skilled workers in New Zealand and 10 in Australia, the US and Japan. • NZ King Salmon is the world’s biggest farmer and supplier of the King salmon species, with 55% of the global market and earns around NZ$60 million a year in foreign exchange.

87th Flaxbourne A&P Show S u n dA y, M A r c h 18 , 2 01 2

Flaxbourne puts on a show to take down all the tents so they didn’t get damaged.” As a child, her whole family would be entered in the show in some description, but Bernadette said this trend isn’t as strong anymore. “I think it’s a sign of the times, kids don’t sew or bake or knit as much anymore.” But the familiar site she cherishes is to see young adults at the show now, who were still youngsters when she started her job as secretary. “The same families that have been in Ward for many years have the next generation coming through now.” Bernadette said numbers have fluctuated over the years. “The numbers of participants and spectators we see each year changes, depending on what else is going on at the time. In the early days there wasn’t as much else on, so it was classed as a big day out.” When Saturday trading started to become popular, Flaxbourne A&P Show was moved to the Sunday. “This meant more people could come to the show because many were working on Saturdays.” With the Havelock Mussel Festival on tomorrow, Bernadette said people make a weekend of the entertainment, popping into the show the following day. “People make it a good weekend.” At Flaxbourne A&P show there will be 52 trade and 10 Goulter Street, Seddon

By Annabelle Latz The tapping of the typewriter is a sound of the past, but the friendly rural vibe of Flaxbourne A&P Show has never changed. This is the message from Bernadette Colman, who has been secretary of the show since 1986. Born and bred in Ward, she grew up on the sheep and beef property Gulchlands, and now lives in Blenheim. Bernadette has the secretarial side of the show down to a fine art. “The jobs just carry on from last year, all the infrastructure is there.” Computers have made her job easier; no longer having to type up schedules and catalogues on a typewriter. “There are still a couple of late nights involved this week, but I just know what has to be done.” Bernadette loves the show because it’s a chance for all the familiar faces to get together again, including people who have moved away from the area and come back for the event. “It’s the people who make the event.” March weather has served up all descriptions, from scorching heat to pouring rain. “One year the wind was so strong we had

The Iron Man competition is bound to draw the spectators, which involves a team of three to shear a sheep with a pushbike-powered shearing machine, cross-cut saw a log of wood, and roll a bale of wool. The hearing competition is always popular, featuring the ‘Cocky’s Classic.’ Helicopter rides, classic cars, vintage motorbikes, retired greyhounds, clothing, food, houseware and local produce. It’s a great day for the whole community, including local schools and the Awatere Pony Club are all part of the show, and certainly worth making a day of.

By Annabelle Latz An unexpected trip to hospital doesn’t have to be an awkward one for rural women. Yesterday three members of the Blenheim/Wairau branch of Rural Women New Zealand donated 15 bathroom kits to the Emergency ward of Wairau hospital. If a rural woman is admitted to hospital from their GP, it may be impossible for them to go home first. These kits, containing soap, a razor, a flannel, toothpaste and toothbrush, and a comb, will be given to these women, to make their arrival more comfortable. “Sometimes they turn up to hospital with nothing,” said Jocelyn Cresswell from RWNZ. The Emergency department will be keeping in touch with RWNZ, and when more kits are needed, RWNZ will

make them up. “This time we donated them, but next time the Pat Evans charitable trust is going to help with further funding.” Senior nurse at the hospital Angela Scott was thrilled to be receiving them. “They are really great, because people can come straight here from their GP, and these packs are personalised.” RWNZ works behind the scenes with many rural aid projects. The next meeting for the Blenheim/Wairau ward is next Monday, to discuss other projects planned for the year. “Our agenda for the year is Children In Need,” said Wendy Scott from RWNZ. Pam Thomlinson from RWNZ said the aim of their group is to focus on issues and needs around landuse, social health and education.

Concern about proposed salmon farms By Annabelle Latz Danny Boulton lives at French Pass, and is deeply concerned about the possibility of more marine farms in the Marlborough Sounds. He has recently been active in setting up the group Sustain Our Sounds, in a bid to submit an application to the EPA by March 16, voicing an opinion against NZ King Salmon’s proposal. “We are looking very closely at the health of the Sounds, and the impact of this marine salmon farming system. The Marlborough Sounds is suffering,” he said. The main concern for SOS is

Danny Boulton.

around ‘Eutrofication’ the nutrient overload of nitrogen into the water. He said King Salmon plan to farm 30,000 tonnes of salmon a year, the equivalent waste of about 500,000 people. SOS is worried that if NZ King Salmon’s proposal is accepted by the EPA at the end of the year, it could open up opportunities for even more large companies to set up marine farms in the future in the Marlborough Sounds. SOS has been conducting underwater surveys and has an environmental lawyer and scientific advisor to assist in the bid to come

up against NZ King Salmon. “We are serious about what we are doing,” said Danny.

Visions of SOS It seeks a long-term strategic integrated management plan for the Marlborough Sounds that sustains the diverse range of users, while protecting the resource and ecosystem for future generations. Kaitiakitanga is our kaupapa, which means we all have a responsibility to protect, restore and enhance where possible our natural environment and try to achieve a sustainable balance. Managing the moth plant By Annabelle Latz Nearly 700 moth plants have been destroyed by biosecurity officers this year. Rob Simons is pleased with this progress, but wants people to remain vigilant in reporting sights of the moth plant so biosecurity officers can continue destroying seedlings and flowers. “If people don’t want to use herbicides we will dig them out, although herbicide is the best option.” There is little use cutting it back, as it will grow back stronger than before. The moth plant is a South American native, and was introduced to New Zealand in the 1880s as an ornamental plant. Here in Marlborough, most of the known moth plant sites are in Blenheim town with a few in Renwick and Picton area. The ongoing control effort is currently restricting the movement of this plant into the Marlborough Sounds. “The big time to control them is in February and March.” Moth plant sites can remain ‘active’ for a number of years due to the amount of viable seed in the soil, and it is not unusual to remove hundreds of seedlings one year after removing a mature plant. So Rob said it was important to find the seed producing plants in order to shut down the spread. He said they produce pods that can look like chokos, (pear shaped) and mistakenly people can eat them. “It’s very important to realise how toxic and invasive these plants are.” If you have any information on moth plant sitings, phone Rob, 021 734 239.

Bio security officer Rob Simons is encouraging everyone to keep an eye out for the moth plant, and inform him of an sightings so it can be destroyed.

Marlborough positive despite fragile wine industry under siege

Weddings

Adverse weather c o n d it io n s , b u l k wine sales, volatile exchange rates, a lack of confidence in government policy and the vagaries of fruit supply and demand are all dealing blows to an already fragile industry, according to the latest Markhams wine industry business confidence survey. “The collective view nationally is that trading conditions for the January 2012 quarter were actually worse than participants predicted when surveyed in January 2011. However Marlborough appears to have bucked this trend, with more than half of respondents believing trading conditions are better than a year ago,” says Graeme Rhodes, Markhams Christchurch director. It appears unlikely that a reduced vintage will create any significant pricing comeback. Even with some industry players predicting lower volumes for a further two seasons, the fruit price is unlikely to rise to any great degree, capped by the bulk wine strategy employed by many businesses still.

Svenja Morgan (nee herbert) daughter of Norbert herbert and cornelia herbert married her high school sweetheart Scott Morgan, son of Grant Morgan and Lois Turner on the 14th January 2012 at Pollard Park, Blenheim. It was a magical day shared with family and friends, which we will always remember and cherish. Our photographer was Jody Percy, {Bear Photography}.

IN MARLBOROuGh:

• 92% of respondents expected conditions to improve or remain the same in the coming 12 months.

Blenheim Sun Sea Conditions

• 54% of respondents from the region predicted decreased volumes in red grapes and 66% in white grapes due to adverse weather conditions. • 74% indicated they had traded profitably over the past year, and 83% of this number indicated they did not because there was no margin in grape or bulk wine prices. • 80% had little or no confidence in the National-led government stimulating the industry. • 67% followed the national trend trend of identifying export markets as the biggest opportunity for growth, up from 55% in 2011. Further, 87% of the region’s respondents are looking at exporting to

new markets this year. • 67% identified the exchange rate as the biggest threat to the industry, again following the national trend. • There is a degree of unrest throughout the industry about some contract processors now making and marketing their own wines, effectively competing against their winery customers. This situation may accelerate the movement of mid-sized players to merge and consolidate with others to increase sales strength, and rationalise distribution and infrastructure. • The Markhams wine business confidence survey is conducted twice yearly by the national wine industry business development unit of the Markhams chartered accountancy and business advisory group. • It is conducted in Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Marlborough, Nelson, Canterbury, Central Otago and Auckland and covers topics such as sales and distribution, capital investment, branding and profitability. The survey report is made available free to industry participants and is published on the Markhams website www.markhams.co.nz

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Friendship is a word with very strong meaning for 91 members of the Friendship Force of Marlborough. The organisation will be marking its 25th year by hosting a dinner at the Clubs of Marlborough for all past and present members on April 19. There are more than 300 Friendship Force clubs all throughout the world whose core activity is travelling in groups to stay with like-minded people in other countries. This enables members to foster and create international understanding and friendship between hosting countries. Marlborough was the 16th group to be formed within New Zealand. For Marlborough member Stella Wadsworth, Friendship Force has

gained her many international friends and a lifetimes worth of memories. “I’m 85-years of age and I am going to make the most of getting out and seeing the world, and with Friendship Force I have had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing people and experiencing many different cultures,” she says. “I have visited a large number of countries but my most memorable was Belgium. “The beauty of the Grand Canyon in USA was also an amazing experience,” she says. Friendship Force of Marlborough is keen to hear from any past members who would like to be involved in the 25-year celebrations. Simply call Stella on 579 4725.

Hot Rod heaven at festival By Annabelle Latz David Chant had a bit of last minute repair job on Wednesday evening that made the brow break a sweat. But he and his loyal hot rod Sundance Yellow made it to the early morning ferry yesterday, and onto the annual Whangamata Beach Hop. “You will see every car there,” said the electrician from Cloudy Bay. He has five hot rods, ranging in states of repair, some his ‘retirement projects.’ He does all the motor rebuilds, repair and maintenance himself.

“That’s part of the reason why I enjoy doing it, I enjoy making them perform and making them fast.” This is David’s third trip up north for this event which also draws classic cars, caravans and motorbikes. The event has been going since 2001, and David wants to let all Marlborough motor enthusiasts aware of it. The Beach Hop runs from March 28 - April 1. “It’s such a fantastic event, and next year it would be great to see a bunch of us travel up together.”

A rugby legend won’t be forgotten New Zealand lost a true rugby great this week, when Jock Hobbs lost his long battle with leukemia. The 52 year-old was an All Black captain and flanker, then NZRU chairman. Public discussion has begun over the best way to remember him.

Rugby legend Colin Meads says naming a rugby stadium or a toplevel rugby award could be great options. The service for Hobbs will be held at Wellington’s Old Saint Pauls’ at 1pm this Sunday.

Another weather beaten Taupo Ironman Another Blenheim name for the washed out Taupo Ironman. Blenheim’s Phil Binnie was Marlborough’s second competitor at the Taupo Ironman which was earlier this month. Unfortunately he and fellow Blenheim competitor Steve Smith

could only race a half iron man distance on Sunday March 4, due to bad weather. Phil competed the 2km swim, 90km bike and 21km run in 5hrs 17min. The Sun spoke to Steve last week, who completed the same course in 5.53 mins.

Plane sailing for wedding The guests won’t have to wear seatbelts, but they will receive a pre-flight safety briefing at the wedding today...

Above: Paul Davidson, owner of the Argosy.

By Annabelle Latz Steve Davies and Yvonne Bland are getting married at the Argosy today at Woodbourne. Yvonne was ‘getting really excited’ yesterday afternoon about the big day, but the Renwick couple has had a big week to survive. On Monday Steve was not feeling too well, and ended up spending the night in Wairau

Hospital, before being flown to Nelson hospital for a heart stent implant on Tuesday morning. “I only got him home this afternoon!” said Yvonne yesterday. While he recovered on the couch, Yvonne described her soon-to-be husband’s love for aeroplanes. “He is an absolute plane freak. He loves

them and when the planes come and land at the airport he can tell exactly what it is by the sound of the engine.” Ironically, Steve hates to fly, so he was less than excited with his flight earlier in the week. “He just likes to look at them,” said Yvonne. Luckily for him, the Argosy won’t be leaving the ground. They are both from England, and met at a

friend’s party in 1977. Steve spends most of his day on water, as a marine mechanic for the Strait ferries. The Argosy seats 25 people, with a business section for family. Aboard the plane the couple will wed, stewards will hand out bubbly on a trolley, then they will continue the celebration with a reception at the Argosy café.
