The Marlborough District Council did not apply for Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park to be a Rugby World Cup venue because of the affect it could have had on ratepayers. Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett says the decision not to apply for hosting rights was made because Rugby World Cup organisers wanted the council to

underwrite ticket sales of 10,000. “The council didn’t want that cost being put onto the ratepayer,” Mrs Bartlett says. “There were other associated costs on the ratepayer as well that the council didn’t feel were appropriate.” She says Lansdowne Park would have only been able to host day games unless its lighting

was upgraded to meet Sky Television standards, another investment which would have been funded by the ratepayer. It was announced last Wednesday the five group matches and two quarter-finals scheduled for Christchurch will be moved due to damage caused by the recent earthquake, with the venue of some pool games still to be decided. KiwiRail, owner of the station building is gearing up to action its’ plans to restore and upgrade the building which first opened in 1906. Once the i-SITE building is complete at the end of June, the station will begin its refurbishments before introducing new visitor and tourist operators, says KiwiRail national property development manager Mark Baylis. “An internet café, luggage storage, ticketing services, car hire and bicycle rental are some of the activities being considered,” he says. are currently underway with KiwiRail consulting with the same architect, Studio of Pacific Architecture, which designed the new i-SITE building. “We will begin work once the i-SITE team has vacated which will see the interior and exterior of the building refurbished and upgraded. “This includes more shelter added and the platforms upgraded to coincide with a new fleet of modern carriages on the TranzCoastal passenger train, which will hopefully start visiting Blenheim this year,” he says. Refurbishments will include the replacement of the Marseille tiles on the existing roof, an upgrade of timberwork, window and skirting replacements to match the original design as well as the possibility of a new ceiling.

The building’s exterior will be repainted and the toilet area upgraded. Once refurbishments are completed KiwiRail says it will keep it maintained. “The Blenheim Railway Station is a stout designed building and we are intent on keeping it maintained and true to its original nature,” Mark says. Although Mark would not divulge KiwiRail’s budget for the station upgrades, he said it would be reasonable to say they have an “adequate budget” in place. “The important thing to note is that KiwiRail is far from running away from this building. We are not doing a half job, our first priority is to carry out the necessary upgrades and our budget will be tailored to suit,” he says.

St John is continuing to recruit volunteer health shuttle drivers ahead of a new service which will transport people from rural areas into Blenheim for health appointments. The service, which will operate between Havelock, Wairau Valley and Ward, is due to begin in April, and the organisation is keen to add to the number of locals who have put their hand up to help. “Our health shuttle drivers have a very important role in helping some members of the community access health care,” St John Community Care projects manager Jacci Tatnell says. Ms Tatnell says drivers will be given full training, including first aid. A training session will be held this Friday at St John, on Seymour Street. The shuttle will operate from Monday to Friday. Anyone interested should contact Helen Faulkner on 5780797, or email helen.faulkner@stjohn.org.nz.

Blenheim police are appealing to the public for any information which can help them locate the man involved in an armed robbery of the Budge Street Four Square on Sunday morning. The man, who entered the store at about 4.15am with a knife demanded money from the shop assistant, is described as clean shaven with olive skin, aged between 18-20. He is described as five feet, seven inches tall, of slight build, and was wearing a black beanie, black long-sleeved top, and black pants at the time of the robbery. He was also carrying a black backpack and wearing a bright purple bandanna. He was last seen travelling along Gascoigne Street on a mountain bike.

Mayor Alistair Sowman says access to Lansdowne Park could have been an issue for World Cup. File photo.

From Page 1. However, while it is still possible some of the nations due to be based in Christchurch may make Blenheim home during the tournament, suggestions it could have hosted any of the disrupted matches are unrealistic, World Cup Marlborough regional project manager Susan Witehira says. “A lot of people are saying ‘why can’t we have a game here in Blenheim?’, but it’s not quite as easy as that,” she says. “To have two teams come here to play a game means you need

to have two separate training grounds because teams can’t practice and play on the same field. “Then you have to find two lots of accommodation, and you have to find inside training venues as well. “Some people think we could possibly have done it, but it’s a lot more technical than people think.” Tournament heavyweights England and Australia were due to spend a total of 19 and 16 days in Christchurch respectively, while

Argentina were due to spend 23 days, and Scotland 11. Italy, Russia [who will be based in Blenheim] and Georgia were due to stay in Christchurch for seven, six and three days respectively. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says Blenheim is ready to “step up” should any further hositng opportunities arise. Mr Sowman cited access issues and limited ground capacity as other factors influencing the decision. However, Mrs Bartlett says, with a capacity of 13,000, that was not an issue.

Moon Man quake prediction causes fear By Damian George The controversial prediction of a large earthquake in the South Island by weather forecaster Ken Ring had many Blenheim residents on edge over the last couple of weeks. Ring, also known as ‘the moon man’, warned a major quake could occur near Christchurch around March 20, a prediction that has so far yet to eventuate. However, a 5.1 magnitude after shock did occur in Christchurch on Sunday night. His prediction saw some people flee from Christchurch, and created angst among some locals who feared the quake could affect Marlborough. New Zeala nd Red Cross

Marlborough Branch administrator Gaylene Chambers says the organisation has fielded many questions from people seeking advice on how they can prepare should the quake strike. “People were asking what they need to get ready, what they should have,” Gaylene says. “The reality is, no matter how prepared you are, you’re not prepared. You can have everything ready but if you’re not at your house at the time, what you’ve got may not be of any help to you.” She says the most important thing to organise in preparation for any natural disaster is a meeting place, as there may be no way of communicating with friends and family should power or phone

lines be cut off. Marlborough Civil Defence manager Ross Hamilton says the emergency response team have not pay much attention to the predictions. “My own personal view is I don’t know how you can predict that,” he says. “In our position, we can’t take him seriously, otherwise we’re going to be adding to the issue.” He says people should already be prepared for any event by having a survival kit ready, including food, water, torch and radio. The Christchurch earthquake had shown people should be able to look after themselves for over a week, not the commonly-accepted period of three days, he says.

Over $30,000 raised at auction

Left to right: Volunteers at the ‘Our Time’ auction for the Christchurch earthquake, held in Blenheim recently, Steph Gifford, Hayley McCairns, Sophie McLernon, Kate Cameron and Faye Dobson. The event raised $33,000.

Organisers of a Christchurch earthquake charity auction held in Blenheim on Thursday night say they are overwhelmed by the generosity of Marlborough people. Local women Sophie McLernon and Kate Cameron were able to put together the event in just over a week, selling close to 200 tickets and arranging nearly 50 items for auction. By the end of the night, more than $33,000 had been raised for the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake Fund, well above what they had been expecting. “From the beginning, when we first suggested the idea of a charity auction, we were amazed at how many people supported us,” Sophie, originally from Christchurch, says. “From the Blenheim Club on High Street

who donated the venue, through to the many people who donated items, it has been a humbling experience.” She says items ranged from an historic pump organ to a Wildebeest skin, and nearly everything was sold for well above its value. A home barista package was the most expensive item to sell, going under the hammer for $2600, followed by a Nicolas Dillon painting, which sold for $2400. Kate says given Marlborough’s proximity to Christchurch, there is a great deal of empathy for what the city has suffered. “We all know someone who lives in Christchurch and we all want to be able to do something to help. I guess the auction gave many people the chance to do just that.”

Left to right: Blenheim children Emily Cross, Lydia Columbus and Josephine Michna-Komigstorfer helped contribute to the collection of pet food to be taken to the SPCA in Christchurch.

By Damian George After seeing a terrified dog roaming the streets of Christchurch in the wake of last September’s earthquake, Blenheim woman Marita Winstanley knew the latest quake would have left many animals in the city scared and homeless. Prompted by her experience, Marita, a piano teacher in Blenheim, called on her students and anyone else who could help to donate pet food to the SPCA in Christchurch. “When this earthquake happened, because I’ve got a lot of dogs myself, I started worrying about the animals down there,” she says. “I was in the car one day and I heard Danny Watson talking away saying that everybody can make a difference if they could just think of something to do, so that’s how this started.” Marita managed to catch the stray dog, which had ran under a bus and a truck and “somehow managed to come out the other side, and take it to the SPCA. Now, with the help of her students, Marita was able to return to the SPCA last week with well over 100 items of pet food to help the organisation with its effort.

Fun day for Christchurch This Saturday, Lochmara Lodge is hosting its annual Fun Festival Day, with all proceeds going to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. There will be activities and performances throughout the day including a kids treasure hunt, face painting and story time for the kids, and wine sampling and edible goodies for the adults. Entry is free but organisers will be taking donations throughout the day.

Reward for John’s Kitchen By Damian George John’s Kitchen organiser Yvonne Dasler says she was stunned when the volunteer group received a second placing at the TrustPower National Community Awards in Tauranga over the weekend. The Blenheim-based community kitchen was one of 25 volunteer organisations from around New Zealand that took part in the awards, after winning their resepective regional competitions at the end of last year. Mrs Dasler says she was extremely surprised at the recognition, as it was the first time the group had achieved a placing at the awards despite several appearances. “To be runner up is a real feather in the cap for Marlborough,” she says. “I was absolutely amazed because the calibre of all the other ones to be nominated was phenomenal.” John’s Kitchen, situated at the Crossroads building on Redwood Street, has been providing a weekly dinner, bread for school lunches, and budget cooking classes for the Marlborough community for the last ten years. They also run the Koha cafe [cafe-style food in return for a donation], and have produced a cookbook called

Blenheim Toyota

By Damian George Wine Marlborough marketing manager Marcus Pickens says his hopes are high for a “stunning” vintage as wineries around Marlborough begin to pick their grapes. “It’s certainly been ahead of target all the way through the season,” he says. “There’s been a lot of warm weather which is good. We’re ahead of the long-term average in terms of ripeness for the time period, and we’ve had enough rainfall to keep canopies well fed so the grapes should be pretty healthy.” He says hopes are very high in the industry for the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc being “outstanding”. “We always want our Sauvignon Blanc to shape up as our best,” he says. “We’ve got that advantage and hopefully nature just plays its part and delivers what we know we can achieve.” He says it is important the weather remains dry for the remainder of the vintage period to ensure the grapes are as good as they are can be. Some grape growers expressed their disappointment recently at the drop in grape prices, but the issue seems to have settled down. “Everyone wants high prices, including the wineries,” Mr Pickens says. “Everyone takes a share in that. That’s the major priority - to try to return the industry to some sense of profitability and that’s the biggest challenge facing everyone at the moment.”

Lions help get Kaiapoi out of a jam The Kaiapoi and Districts Lions Club received a welcome surprise from their Blenheim counterparts recently when they were presented with nearly 150 jars of jams and preserves for the area’s food bank. Members of the Blenheim Lions Club spent two weeks

making the preserves, which were taken to Christchurch on March 12 to assist the Kaiapoi club following the recent earthquake. Blenheim Lions Club president Mary Beesley says the group thought it would be a nice gesture for a region which had been hit hard by the recent

events. “Kaiapoi had been hugely affected in the September quake and again affected in the February quake so we decided it would be a nice idea to give the preserves to the food bank,” she says. “The impact of a small gesture can mean so much to some people.”

New phone line for emergency accommodation Housing New Zealand now has a 24-hour phone line to handle any requests for emergency accommodation in Marlborough from Christchurch people affected by the earthquake. From Friday, all requests for assistance with accommodation should be directed there, rather than to Civil Defence, a spokesperson says. The

number is 0800 435 700. Mayor Alistair Sowman offered his thanks to the several hundred Marlborough people who offered houses and baches to people fleeing from Christchurch. Many individuals and families had been given a very welcome respite in Marlborough and the hospitality had been greatly appreciated, he says.

Be part of Dan Carter’s search Two weeks ago Dan Carter kicked off a nationwide search to find a team of 15 everyday kiwi boys and girls (between the ages of seven to 12 years) to be the ‘Face for Jockey Junior’. The response has been great, but where are the Marlborough entries? Organisers say no South Island entries have been submitted and are keen to hear from

the top of the south. All 15 winning boys and girls will win a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ to spend the day with Dan Carter at an official photo shoot; the photography from which will be used in a campaign for a new range ‘Jockey Sports Club’. Moko the fr iendly dolphin won many a heart as he swam the waters from Mahia to Gisbor ne, Whakatane and Tauranga. This beautifully presented book of memories, stories and photographs has been recorded to share some of the emotive events during Moko’s travels before his tragic death in the winter of 2010. The young dolphin was famous for his trusting nature, free spirit and delightful sense of humour. Educational, entertaining, and poignant, ‘In Love with Moko’ is a worthy tribute to this unforgettable dolphin and all the wondrous things he achieved in his short but meaningful life. Published authors/illustrator of In Love with Moko, Nikki Slade Robinson and Val Bird are offering one free copy to a Sun reader who submits a short story in tribute to their own beloved pet. The short story can be between 100 and 300 words, and can be emailed to celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz or posted to Celeste Lodewyk, PO Box 634 Blenheim. Please include your name, address and phone number. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, March 30.

Sun readers have their say... Q: How have you been affected by the Japan earthquake/tsunami?

Don Adams Blenheim The Nuclear explosions would be their main worry at the moment. On top of what they already have would add to more devasatation.

Chris Newcombe Blenheim It will have a global affect, both economically and geographically.

Doesn’t affect me personally, but the devasatation is horrendous. You have to feel deeply for the population.

Our friends are ok, we have been in touch via email and facebook. I just can’t imagine the devastation, or what it’s even like. Here’s hoping the Nuclear disaster can be controlled.

Devastating, particularly the tsunami - you don’t have a chance. I’m impressed with the building regulations in Japan though. Much better than New Zealand.

Dear Editor, In regard to your article on the proposed shifting of the Tua Marina Hall, I regard this moving of this communityowned hall [not council-owned] as outrageous. This would make no provision for children and people, possibly who live on the hall side, to cross the highway. Tua Marina, being a built-up area on the highway, needs to be a restrictedspeed area. In my opinion, it needs to

have further signs added [“slow down pedestrian crossing”], marked out and managed at school times. The crossing would allow for both directions. Now the train: the school needs to phone the railways and find out when the trains come through and adjust their school movements in between. Ken Lawrence, Secretary Marlborough Concerned Citizens Inc.

Double standards? Dear Ed, It was most interesting to read councillor Graeme Taylor’s comment in The Sun Newspaper last Wednesday regarding The Tua Marina Hall. It appears to me councillor Taylor may have double standards here. I agree that the Tua Marina community should be part of that decision. I would suggest

that the same courtesy be given to the citizens of Marlborough regarding the proposed new Civic Theatre. The council should consider a referendum giving Marlborough people the opportunity to agree to or to reject the financing and siting of this project, especially in this economic climate. Bruce Wallace

A letter to the Mayor Dear Sir, You have allowed a group of local people to make an unpopular decision to supply an unpopular site and finance to build an unnecessary new theatre [“you” as puppet]. From the correspondence in the news print media from your public and ratepayers, this is a bad decision. As a ratepayer, I call for a public referendum for and against this new theatre. This would show your credibility in your office of mayor to the public, and ratepayers of the MDC. Derek ‘Dicky’ Bate Mayor Sowman issued this response: The decision on the theatre site was made by the previous council, not a group of local people. The choice of site has been criticised by the RSA, which is directly affected, and the plans have been altered to alleviate its concerns. The site has also been criticised by a small group of regular writers of letters to local newspapers. They have chosen to ignore or reject the reasons for selecting the preferred site. They are entitled to do that but this does not make them right. A public referendum on this issue would be a large expense imposed on our community. Even more importantly, it would simply enable our current councillors to abdicate responsibility for the job they were elected to do; make the tough decisions on behalf of the residents and ratepayers who chose them as their representatives. Alistair Sowman Mayor

Dull phone books Dear Sir, Oh dear, what ever became of our lovely phone book covers? I wasn’t impressed at all with the new cover. It does nothing for me. Could I suggest rather than going back to paintings, how about asking people in future to submit a gorgeous coloured photo on

Marlborough. It could be an aerial view from above or even the coastline. Just whatever looks striking. How do other people feel? It would be good to hear a few comments from your readers. Like I say though a lovely coloured photo would look better than the new cover. Not so impressed reader

St Patrick’s Day thankyou Dear Sir We would like to say a big thankyou to all those people who came to the Redwood Vines restaurant on St Patrick’s Day to be entertained. Nearly everyone who came through the door had gone to a great effort to dress for the day. There was a sea of green everywhere and the people were in a party mood. A huge thank you has to go to Bronwyn and her staff who served meals to 110 people. With thanks from the Celtic Rollers, Gina Lackner, Trevor McLean and Kath Maher.

Creating a “Buzz” in the kitchen is Aston Restaurant and Bar head chef Rayella (Buzz) Milne. New to the team, Rayella brings fresh ideas, passion and enthusiasm to the kitchen with her fresh and innovative approach to home-style cooking. “What I love most about working here is the warm and inviting environment and I plan to compliment that with my wholesome, home-style meals,” she says. With 16-years industry experience, she has created a mouth-watering menu using locally sourced and fresh produce. “This includes fresh fish, meat, vegetables and fruit – all sourced within Marlborough,” she says. Within the restaurant, between 24 and 30 people can be seated, which can include private bookings. Menu specials change daily to provide diners with a range of options to choose from and can be checked out on the Aston Restaurant and Bar Facebook page.

Compliment your meal with one of Aston Restaurant and Bar’s tap beers and house wines. Bar options include a selection of natural beers brewed in Nelson Bays. Bays Brewery uses traditional, natural brewing methods with no sugar, chemicals or preservatives, producing internationally award

winning (natural) beers. Feel like something hot? Try a Tuatara Coffee, an organic fair traded coffee hand-roasted in Golden Bay. Not only will you be enjoying a quality hand-crafted coffee, but you will be helping to support Tuatara conservation through donations from coffee sales.

New owners showcase passion for hospitality Located beside the Aston Court Motel, the restaurant/bar has been a welcome addition for motel owners Noel and Trish Noble, who took over the business on February 28. The couple is thrilled with the purchase and say the business provides great benefits to both motel users and the public. “We are really excited about the purchase and feel that it offers a great place for locals to relax, unwind and sample delicious, homestyle cooked meals,” Trish says. “In addition we have our daughter Jaimee here to manage the bar. Being a family run business really adds to the homely and welcoming atmosphere,” Noel says. The restaurant has been busy Aston Restaurant owners Noel & Trish Noble with daughter Jaimee.

Local businesses experience growth Many local transport companies have gone from strength to strength during the past 12 months with staff expansions and additions to their services. One in particular, MD Freighting which is based in Riverlands experienced some exciting changes recently when it was purchased last year by local company, North Group.

The purchase was made alongside Auckland based company Fluidex Transport Ltd. The North Group now owns the general freight business, land and buildings while Fluidex has taken over the mussel freight and container lifting side of the business. MD Freighting will continue to operate under its name.

Headed by businessman Patrick North, MD Freighting was a welcome addition to the North Group’s current freight business. “MD Freighting is a great addition to our existing Chiller Transport business and we plan to operate both freighting businesses from the Riverlands site later this year,” he said.

CRB owner Mike Gifford.

Operating a local business is all about building a partnership with the community, says CRB Transport owner Mike Gifford. CRB Transport is Marlborough’s only 100 percent owned and operated specialist log carrier and has been providing service to the top of the south loggers since 2001. Owned by Blenheim-born Mike who is more affectionately known as ‘Giffo’, CRB Transport is proud to be locally owned and operated. Employing 23 local staff, Mike says it is important to support the community. “When you are harvesting a local resource you should be employing local people and keeping as much money within the community as possible,” he says. CRB Transport operates from it’s Blenheim base at Spring Creek and services contractors from Canterbury North to Blenheim, and from Nelson through to the West Coast. With a large modern fleet of trucks including Marlborough’s only self loading log truck, CRB Transport has the experience and equipment to get your logs from the forest to the customer when you want.

Broadbridge, a family business Broadbridge Transport Ltd has a long and rich family history. The company is a livestock and log cartage business with vast experience in logging and rural haulage. Owners and operators, Weir and Leon Broadbridge take immense pride in being reliable and providing top quality service. Their main depot is located in Renwick, Marlborough but there are also trucks based in Nelson and Christchurch which allows the Broadbridge Transport Ltd to service those regions effectively. Company history:

Cyril Broadbridge.

In late 1946, Cyril Broadbridge traded his 1935 Ford sedan in on a brand new International KS-5 truck. This sparked the beginning of CD Broadbridge Limited. Cyril and his brother Noel began by servicing rural customers in Wairau Valley during the day, before heading to the West Coast to pick up a load of coal each night. Cargo being transported consisted pri-

marily of livestock, hay, wool and coal but other more challenging loads were also taken on including a vintage plane as well as lime and manure spreading. In 1948 Cyril added a second hand Chevrolet to the business and in 1949 Cyril built the company’s first wooden double-decker sheep crate. Additional trucks were added to the fleet - in 1950 a V8 Ford was purchased, followed by two new Austin Loadstars, and in 1956 Cyril purchased his first bulk spreader. In 1953 the fleet moved from their base in Hillersden to a new depot in Wairau Valley. Very much a family affiar, Cyril drove while his wife Hazel managed the office. The business then relocated to a depot in Renwick in 1971, next door to where the Renwick Community Hall now resides. This was later followed by the presentday yard which was built in 1983 on the corner of State Highway 63 and Hawkesbury Road.

Finding the right transport operator When you’re in a business where you require the transportation of heavy, delicate or specialist items, it’s important to find the right transport operator. Fortunately Marlborough has a wide range of specialist transport companies, each with their own unique service to offer. Riverlands based MD Freighting specialises in general freight distribution for the top of the south and has the ability to link with nationwide companies. Chiller Transport operates daily throughout Nelson, Blenheim, Picton and Kaikoura offering storage and distribution of chilled and ambient goods. CRB Transport is Marlborough’s specialist log carriers and has the region’s only self-loading log truck, designed for woodlot harvesting. Renwick based Broadbridge Transport

Healthy bodies start with healthy minds. Learning how to build self-esteem in children and adolescents is an important part of being a parent. The development of self-confidence begins with children at an early age, and parents provide the greatest influence on how their children come to value themselves and those around them. Self-esteem and innerconfidence is how a person likes, accepts and respects themselves. What they think about oneself determines how a child feels, and having high self esteem can greatly impact on a child’s success and inde-

pendence as adults. For children to achieve this they must feel they are loved and valued unconditionally by their parents, and receive plenty of encouragement and praise. Children also like to know that we see them being capable of doing things for themselves and by themselves. To encourage this and to help build self esteem, give children age-appropriate activities, chores a nd responsibil ities within the home. Once completed show plenty of praise and gratitude, this will teach children how to feel good

about themselves, their abilities and accomplishments. In the adolescent years, parents can avoid problems associated with low esteem by focusing on giving positive feedback and encouraging comments while providing the oppor tunities to discover and experience success. After school sports and extra-curricular activities help keep young minds and bodies active. Help them to discover who they are. Support their interests whether it is gardening, dance, music, art or handling animals etc.

Students appeal for funding Six Marlborough Boys College students are preparing to knuckle down in a bid to raise enough money to fund their Spirit of Adventure voyage starting on April 26. The 5-Day Spirit Trophy, run by the Spirit of Adventure Trust, sees four groups of year ten students from schools around New Zealand compete against each other in a range of activities. Four of the year ten students from the Marlborough Boys’ College team have gained funding, but the remaining six members [Jonathan Cash, Leiam Hartley, Alex Hill, Keegan Lane, Hayden Nott, and Logan Silcock] are now appealing to anyone who may be able to provide them with work.

The college’s assistant head of faculty in technology Giles Lancaster says the school will also likely organise fundraising events such as sausage sizzles to assist the students in their efforts. The teams on the Spirit of Adventure boat will accumulate points through tasks including teamwork, problem solving, ship handling and aquatic sports, with the team with the most points being crowned the winner. The competing schools were selected by ballot in October last year.

Baby acne The reason that baby acne or newborn acne is such an important issue is that it is very common and it can often be mistaken for an allergy to formula or something in the mother’s milk. Baby acne will often appear somewhere around 8 weeks. It looks like adult acne and starts on the face. It then usually moves down the neck and upper back and chest. It lasts on average for about 2-4 weeks, but usually returns later in a less severe form. Just about the time when your baby is more aware and you are ready to take pictures, it seems to strike. The cause is hormones from the mother from when the baby was in the womb and also hormones passed through breast milk. There is nothing you can or should do about baby acne except just wait. The reason you will know that it is not an allergic reaction is it will not spread to the lower stomach, lower back, or legs. Whereas an allergic reaction would be all over the body and would look less like pimples and more like a rash. If your baby is having a reaction to a type of food, it could surface in various ways. Most parents look for a rash but it might be cause gas, diarrhoea, vomiting, or puffy eyes. The main thing is to look for something that is out of the ordinary. If you observe a reaction report it to your doctor as soon as you can.

The concert was part of a prize package won by Springlands School students Ned (7-years) and Thomas Boyce (10-years) in the nationwide “Back to School Rocks” promotion with Paper Plus. The boys chose 12 friends to share a VIP prize, which included a meet and greet session with Ivy Lies after the concert had finished. “The concert was awesome and all our friends loved it,” the boys grinned. Ivy Lies singer Emla Palmer said the concert was great fun and that the kids were “rocking in true fashion”. “We were blown away to see so many kids getting right into the music. They were dancing, waving their arms and some were even head-banging, it was fantastic,” she laughed. Lies third autograph from Ivy  Millie Wensley gets her l. drummer Rosie O’Connel

Q – “Should we answer the question, ‘What must I do to be saved?’ with the three steps of: 1) Repent, 2) Be Baptised and 3) Receive the Holy Spirit?” (Peter – question asked in literature he handed to one of our young people while we were out witnessing about Christ on Market Street) A – No. Following on from last week, we have more false doctrine by the RCI! If you can read, the answer to this week’s question is explicitly stated by the Holy Spirit in the Bible: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” (Acts 16:30-31) A man full of repentance is told to believe – No, You must be baptized. No, You must receive the Holy Ghost. It doesn’t get much clearer than this! The only way you could miss this would be if you were guilty of listening to a church instead of the Bible. As we have documented numerous times in this column, water baptism is an act of obedience for a new Christian that shows outwardly to the world what has already taken place in the heart. It has absolutely nothing – Zero, Nada, Zippo – to do with salvation. It is not part of the gospel and someone is outright lying to you by twisting a few verses out of context if they are saying otherwise. The Apostle Paul said, “Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel” (I Cor 1:17) – Jesus overwhelming reiterated that salvation was gained by belief in his finished work on the cross and not any human effort or obedience. Pulling Mark 16:15, John 3:5, Acts 2:38, 22:16, and I Peter 3:21 out of context and forcing all of the clear verses in the Bible about NT salvation to fit these five twisted verses is grossly dishonest and deceptive. Yes – the RCI and others will talk as though these are the only five verses in the Bible about water baptism – which they are not. God (Father, Son and Spirit) is inseparable from eternal life – it is his presence within a person that gives them eternal life. “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” The RCI and most other Charismatic groups make the error of saying that the Holy Spirit is received AFTER salvation – by definition this is impossible! If the Spirit is Life (Rom 8:10) then you could only receive the Spirit WHEN you get saved, not after. Rom. 8:9 flatly says that if you don’t have the Spirit or Christ, then you aren’t saved. One does not get two-thirds of God when they believe and then the Spirit at some point down the road. Someone here is confusing the baptism by the Spirit (one time event at salvation = eternal life) with the filling of the Spirit (oft repeated event after salvation = power for service). The indwelling of the Spirit of God occurs immediately upon our belief in Christ (Gal. 3:2) – it is not a further condition of salvation, but a part OF salvation; it does not need or involve water baptism to happen; it is NOT evidenced by tongues or miracles. We know of his presence FIRST and foremost by the clear teaching of scripture and then by the evidence of his fruit in our lives (Gal 5:22-23).

Little master a champion in every way Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar walked out onto Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday with the weight and expectation of a nation once again on his shoulders. An excited full house turned out to watch the little master in India’s crucial World Cup game against West Indies, a century of centuries for his country only 100 runs away. T he crowd did not see Tendulkar blaze the Windies attack to all parts of the ground in that match, but they did witness another act of true class from the champion batsman. In the first over, Tendulkar edged a ball from bowler Ravi Rampaul through to the wicket-keeper

when on just six. Umpire Steve Davis heard nothing; Tendulkar did, and he walked. The crowd could have been disappointed its main draw card had departed the scene so soon. But Tendulkar’s decision to walk with so few runs to his name was as much an example of his class as his masterful batsmanship might have been. The cynic would say he had nothing to lose - he has 17,000 runs already, it was only a group match, he had a whole bunch of match-winners to back him up if he failed. The reality is, as Sunday’s crowd exemplified, Tendulkar always has something to lose. Most of the billion or so people

living in India exp e c t Damian George nothing less than the impossible – dominance of the opposition every time he steps onto the field. On the game’s biggest stage, in front of a willing home crowd, why not let technology decide his fate? It is the perennial question that this incident has again sparked. There is no answer to it; only individual responses which reflect the standards of the respective players. Tendulkar’s response, therefore, is not surprising.

Back to reality

Marlborough Red Cross worker Ben McKinnon says his time assisting with the recovery effort in Christchurch was a real ‘eye-opener’.

By Damian George Marlborough Red Cross welcomed back the last of their volunteers last week who had been assisting in the Christchurch recovery effort following last month’s earthquake. Team leader of the Marlborough Red Cross Response Team Ben McKinnon, who was in Christchurch for 12 days, says the destruction evident in the ravaged city was a real eye-opener. “We were mainly in the lower socioeconomic areas that got hit the hardest, which was shocking to see,” he says. “There were some very, very badly damaged houses.

“Driving past the rescue base on Latimer Square a few times, there was just dead silence.” The Marlborough team were the first response team outside of Canterbury on the scene following the earthquake, having arrived at 1am the day after it struck. The Red Cross workers made up one quarter of four-person teams assigned to assist people affected. The teams also included a Salvation Army worker, building inspector and Department of Health representative. “Our role was really to find out what their needs were. A lot of people were looking after themselves but a lot were

just waiting for a knock on the door.” Originally from Christchurch, Ben has been involved with Red Cross on and off since he was 18, meaning he was well prepared for the challenge facing him in Christchurch. “It’s what I’d been training for since I was 18 - to do exactly that,” he says. “People say ‘it must be hard’ and ‘it must be tough’. Well, yes, but I wouldn’t have done all that training if I didn’t want to be there.” Ben says Red Cross are currently looking for new volunteers, of any age and any level of fitness. Full training is provided for anyone who wants to join.

Former Marlburian finds international success

By Celeste Lodewyk The name Jacque Taylor has been well known in Marlborough and New Zealand for many years, but more recently it has been added to the international stage of country music. Jacque who lived and worked as a musician in Marlborough for 16-years, moved to Perth, Australia with her husband John Taylor who got a job coaching a premier rugby team five-years ago. Jacque and members of her family have won numerous music awards in both Marlborough and NZ. But something even more prestigious, Jacque’s country song “Country Yodeling Hoedown Girl” has been picked up by Universal Music and compiled onto a CD along with well-known artists such as Kenny Rogers and Trisha Yearwood. This recent success stems from winning an online music competition. Jacque’s song, along with nine others, was chosen to be part of the online competition where listeners could vote for their favourite song. “In the end I was leading by 1.25 million votes, something which totally shocked me. “But it was a great honour and I am really excited to have my song featured on the album, which is titled Saturday Night Country,” she says. Jacque hopes her international success will continue, opening more doors to exciting opportunities.
