Quake victims remembered By Damian George Hundreds of people gathered in Blenheim’s Seymour Square yesterday to observe two minutes silence for the people of Christchurch exactly one week after a fatal earthquake ravaged the city. The death toll from the disastrous quake stood at 154 yesterday, and will likely reach more than 200, while authorities say the city’s CBD will be closed for months. Mayor Alistair Sowman led the tribute, and thanked those who attended for turning up in such large numbers to pay their respects. “If there are people from Christchurch here

today, our thoughts are certainly with you,” he said. “We are all grieving and asking ‘why have we gone through such a terrible time?’ The scenes have shocked us beyond words.” Mr Sowman said so many people know Christchurch as a beautiful city with tranquil gardens and peaceful settings, but all that had been “swept away by this violent event”. “Know that we will do whatever we can to support you at this time as we remember you today...we think of you and hope and pray your peace and tranuility will be restored. “We can only imagine your suffering, but we

mourn with you.” He also thanked the people of Marlborough for their support and generosity over the last week to help Christchurch. “The response of people in the province has been outstanding and I’m particularly proud.” Among the crowd was Christchurch resident Rai Leota, who is staying at his brother’s house in Blenheim with wife Rebecca, and children Chloe [5] and Mason [eight months], while the stability of their house remains unknown. “It’s still standing but, until it has been checked over, I wasn’t too keen on having my family stay in it,” he said.

CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE

Run dry: The Warehouse Blenheim manager Ian Daubney says the store’s entire stock of 10-litre water pallets was sold out in two days as Christchurch earthquake escapees prepared to head back to the city last week.

By Damian George Local businesses were inundated with fleeing Cantabrians in the days following last week’s devastating earthquake in Christchurch, with The Warehouse reporting they were unable to keep up with demand and cleaned out of several products. The Warehouse Blenheim manager Ian Daubney says Cantabrians seeking refuge from the carnage had stocked up on several survival items as they prepared to head back to the city, and by Thursday many were sold out. “Everything that holds water we’ve just about sold out of,” he said on Thursday. “We’re sold out of water containers, every bucket in the place is just about gone, even weed sprayers ‘cause they can hold five to ten litres of water as well.” Most of Christchurch was without power or running water in

the days after the magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck. The Brenssell family of Beckenham, who were at The Warehouse on Thursday shopping for water containers, buckets, and fuel containers, say they ended up in Blenheim after deciding to “just get out”. “When we left Christchurch, there was no power, no water, no toilet, no phones, so we came up here just to sort of take stock,” Graeme Brenssell said. “All we were getting is aftershocks all the time. Here, we can get our phones sorted out, make phone calls and watch TV to see how bad it is. “We couldn’t even text in the car so we had no idea what was going on.” Graeme says he plans to return in the next few days, while wife Ros, and children Laura and Jake, would remain at Ashleigh

Court Motel where the family were staying. People arriving from Wellington on the Interislander Ferry and others from the top of the South Island were also stocking up as they prepared to visit friends and family, and locals flocked to do the same in case of an earthquake here. Blankets, inflatable beds and pumps, sleeping bags, and chilly bins were among the items to be snapped up, while the entire stock of 10-litre water pallets, camping cookers, and portaloos were gone. “I think it’s just become a reality - it’s a wee bit close to home,” Ian said. “I don’t think it’s panicking but people are just getting prepared.” Ian said he was frantically trying to order replacement stock from Wellington, as that was the fastest way get it to the store.

Cash donations best way to help Civil Defence minister John Carter says cash donations are the best way to help people affected by the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit Christchurch nine days ago. Mr Carter says offers of support through donations of money are the quickest and easiest way to help organisations on the ground get what they need. “That way, affected people can make their own choices about putting their lives back together,” he says. “What’s more, money spent locally helps the local economy at a crucial time. “If you have goods to offer, rather than cash, it will be some time before the logistics to handle this will be available.” Mr Carter says Civil Defence will make a public call if there comes a need for specific goods to be donated as the recovery effort develops. in both a wedding ceremony and reception being organised as early as Thursday afternoon. “We’d been planning it for four months and then everyone’s been able to pull together and plan it in two days. It’s quite amazing,” Jeremy says. “It’s really nice that everyone’s pulled together - especially our families but also people that we don’t even know. “They’ve been so generous and understanding. There’s people way worse off than we are, by far.” While Viane managed to salvage her wedding dress, Jeremy’s suit was in the Munn’s Menswear store in Christchurch’s CBD, one of the many buildings to be reduced to rubble by the quake that struck at 12.51pm. Jeremy had been due to pick up his suit

from the store at 1pm, but by sheer luck was delayed. Thomas’s of Blenheim was one of the buisnesses to jump onboard at the last minute, providing Jeremy with a replacement for the big day. The Old Barn Function Centre contributed the venue, and accommodation for the couple, while Gibb’s Restaurant - themselves a victim of a fire which destroyed their restaurant recently - provided chefs and wait staff. Decorating, venue design and set-up was organised by Got It Covered, and flowers for the venue were supplied by Pink Poppie. Viane and Jeremy also want to extend their thanks to Marlborough’s River Queen and Golfers World Blenheim for their generosity over the weekend.

By Damian George Not many people can say they have planned a wedding in two days, but a Christchurch couple whose original wedding plans fell through following last week’s earthquake has done just that. Bride Viane Pritchard [20] and groom Jeremy McCulla [23] were to get married at the Charlotte Jane hotel in Papanui on Saturday, but that became impossible when central Christchurch went into lockdown and a state of emergency was declared after Tuesday’s devastating quake. The couple instead decided to elope to Blenheim, where Viane has family, and were determined their wedding would still go ahead on the scheduled date. What unfolded was a remarkable effort from friends, family and local businesses which resulted

2011 Census cancelled The 2011 census scheduled for March 8 has been cancelled and will not be held this year, it was announced on Friday. Statistics minister Maurice Williamson says he was advised by government statistician Geoff Bascand the census could not be successfully completed because of the recent Canter-

bury earthquake. “This is not the time to go door to door asking New Zealanders for information when they’re dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake,” Mr Williamson says. “It’s unthinkable that we would ask this of people. It would be an unfair burden and

distraction at a time when they are grieving.” Mr Bascand said he acknowledges the decision will have consequences for people who use the census data in their work. “We will now investigate the feasibility of alternative options,” he says.

Christchurch students find home in Blenheim

Amelia Wadsworth [left] welcomed her cousin Brooke Williams to Witherlea School last week as Brooke’s school in Christchurch remains closed.

By Damian George With so ma ny Christchurch schools closed following the damage caused by last Tuesday’s earthquake, a number of students from the city have found a temporary home at schools around Blenheim. Witherlea School welcomed a total of 16 new students on Monday, providing some sort of normality for the displaced children and alleviating some of the stress on parents. Among the new crop at Witherlea School was nine-year-old Brooke Williams, who started on

Friday and was able to join her 10-year-old cousin Amelia Wadsworth at the school. Brooke was at Elmwood Primary School in Christchurch having lunch with her friends when the earthquake hit, and quickly put her earthquake training into action. “We all ran into the middle of the field and went into the turtle position,” she says. Like many of her fellow students around the city, she has no idea when her school will be back open. “We can’t go there because they have to have a safety check and there’s no water or anything running,” Brooke says. In the meantime, she is enjoying being with her older cousin, and also with two of her schoolmates from Elmwood who too have joined the school. Witherlea School principal Murray Hewson says the influx of students is testing the school’s capacity, but they will “keep packing them in”.

“If it ends up becoming a long-term thing with some students, we’re counting on the Ministry of Education providing some extra staff for us. “It does give you a feeling that you are of some help, and it’s providing some structure and security and something positive for these kids.” He says the new students appear to be “relaxed and positive” about the move, and their inclusion has given his students a chance to implement the values they are taught. “It’s a really authentic context for them: we have this little code that our kids live by of ‘be kind, be safe, and be fair, so this is a real living example of how they can put all of that into practise. “It takes a lot of stress off parents and makes the day a bit easier for the kids. “There’s so much they have to deal with - if you can help by having these kids at school, hopefully that’s a helpful contribution.”

MARLBOROUGH STADIUM TRUST

By Celeste Lodewyk Since last Tuesday’s Christchurch earthquake, there have been many stories of bravery, survival and regrettably – the loss of loved ones. For most of Marlborough, we can only watch in horror and deep sadness but for those who have seen first hand the wide spread devastation, the reality is much worse. The Sun spoke with Christchurch Central Labour MP and former Blenheim resident Brendan Burns about his and his family’s personal experience. Brendan’s electorate office located on Hereford Street was amongst the many buildings destroyed by last week’s earthquake. His three staff and one volunteer managed to escape through the building’s rear entrance, thanks to an earthquake drill carried out the previous week. “Luckily we had not long received advice from a builder to exit the rear and not the front, so the information was imprinted in the staff’s minds,” he said. Brendan’s wife Philippa along with daughter Rachel and her boyfriend Willy Roundhill are safe and well, and their home was virtually unscathed. “Mercifully my family came through fine but sadly this has not been the same for many families in Christchurch. Brendan has visited the CDB several times and described it as being more harrowing than the last. “I recently went with former Prime Minister Helen Clark and Labour leader Phil Goff down Colombo Street and looked at the buses which had been crushed by rubble, it was very hard and sad for all of us to see,” he said. Brendan’s message to the people of Marlborough is an appeal for the community’s support. “I know the Marlborough community, and I know of the generosity that the community has shown in the past. Canterbury is going to need every ounce of that support to help get through this disaster. “I know there will be people in Marlborough who has lost family and friends and my heart goes out to you. Christchurch will rise from this but for now this has to be the nation’s darkest hour,” he said.

Hall relocation ‘act of desecration’

By Damian George A Tua Marina resident says the proposed relocation of the town’s Memorial Hall to Tua Marina School is an “act of desecration” and will diminish the building’s significance to the community. Representatives from Tua Marina School want to move the hall onto its grounds so children no longer have to cross the road and rail line to get to it. But John Masters, a resident for 25 years, says moving the hall from the site for which it was intended will be detrimental. “The site offered to locate the hall, by the bishop of Nelson at the time, is adjacent to the district graveyard where forebears rest who gave their blood, sweat and tears to acquire this wonderful community asset,” he says.

“It was extended and given War Memorial status in 1954: it’s prefectly reasonable to describe any removal as an act of desecration.” The proposal prompted John to study the history of the district through War Memorial Hall records, various documents held at the Marlborough Museum and Archive, and several historical John Masters books. “As a result, I have come to the conclusion that, though I accept a number of people are acting with what they consider to be the best of intentions, history will prove this is the wrong concept being

driven by the wrong people.” Tua Marina School principal Cheryl Wadworth says the proposal was made after lengthy consultation with the Tua Marina Residents’ Association, Tua Marina ratepayers, Marlborough District Council and the Ministry of Education. “There’s been a lot of research investigating a lot of options. At this stage, the most financially viable option is moving the old hall and upgrading it in the process,” she says. “We still want it to remain a memorial hall here; we certainly don’t want to decrease the significance of it. “I want to reiterate that it’s to benefit the whole community, and it’s from a safety aspect.” She says the proposal is only the first stage in the process, and there is a lot more to be discussed with the respective parties.

Former Brazilian residents now living in Blenheim entertain children at the Marlborough Multicultural Festival on Saturday. Back row: Allan Jaqueira, Ricardo Carvalho and Joseph Helfensteller. Front row: Marcello Pinheiro. By Damian George The Marlborough Multicultural Festival held at Pollard Park on Saturday once again attracted an exciting mix of international groups - among them a group of Brazilians who are trying to promote the sport of ‘futsal’ in Marlborough. A variation of soccer, futsal is a fast-paced, indoor game typically played by teams of five, and has already become popular in certain parts of New Zealand. “It’s really big in Europe and South America, and now it’s quite big in Auckland and Chrsitchurch,” former Brazilian resident Marcello Pinheiro says. “So we’re just trying to bring it to Blenheim and develop the sport here.” Marcello and fellow immigrants Allan Jaqueira, Ricardo Carvalho and Joseph Helfensteller say their main aim is to also establish a soccer school for children in the region, for kids aged between eight and 11, and 12 and 15. “From there, we’ll see how it goes,” he says. “We may be able to hold one for people 16 and up as well. Next week, we are going round the different schools to try and promote the idea.” All four of the men have been enamoured by the easypaced lifestyle they have encountered in Blenheim, a far cry from the hectic big-city rush in some of Brazil’s main centres. “Here, I get whatever I need, I get more space; over there, there’s people everywhere,” Marcello says. “In New Zealand, you have all the varieties of sports, and nothing’s too far - it’s only 15 minutes from any place to another place. “The best thing for Ricardo is when he turns the tap on, he gets cold water!”, he jokes. Allan was also taken aback by the community culture in Marlborough’s main town, which was on display on Saturday. “It’s so safe. You have cops coming round and talking to the people and the community coming together,” he says. “It’s great - it’s so small, everybody knows each other.”

Sun readers have their say... Q: What are your thoughts on the earthquake in Christchurch?

Alan Naysmith Blenheim

Anna Stuart Blenheim

It’s disastrous for the people, Christchurch and New Zealand.

I was down there at the time. Just absolutely terrifying.

John Hyland Blenheim Unbelievable. I have family members there. It’s shocking. Cars and buildings can be replaced, but not people.

Michelle Dawson Blenheim

Nicole Beavon Blenheim

Tracey Ellis Blenheim

Tragic for all those involved. So much for them to deal with. They deserve all that NZ can provide for them.

I think it’s a tragedy. Awful and terrifying. My heart goes out to everyone.

Absolutely horrific. Our heart goes out to all Cantabrians.

Dear Ed I am concerned to see what is going on in tennis in Marlborough regarding Michael Mooney. In my opinion, I feel there has been a vendetta against him as a person, and as a tennis coach. Does he deserve it? No. He is a past New Zealand junior and senior tennis champion, has been a national junior coach, holds New Zealand and German teaching qualifications, and has given ten years’ commitment to junior tennis players in Marlborough. He deserves respect. Instead, in my opinion, certain people within Marlborough have had an agenda to personally attack him and sought to undermine him and the children he coaches.

It has become personal, and I understand there are now a group of Nelson coaches coaching at the Marlborough Tennis Club - some of whom are inexperienced and underqualified. I wish to make it clear I am not involved. Michael has a strong personality and has stood up for his and the children’s rights. In my opinion, not only has Michaels’ contractural and legal rights been trampled on, but there is also a strong coaches code of ethics at play every time these coaches move into Marlborough. In my opinion, facts will beat personal attacks and the truth will come out. [Abridged] Alastair Cotterill, Nelson resident/professional tennis coach

Dear Ed, I am dusgusted to look at the elated faces of the “Friends of the Theatre Trust” and councillors printed in the Marlborough Express. Are the friends and councillors happy with the cost to the ratepayer of $25,262 within the MDC with a population of 45,000? The mayor has promised $5million to the trust, to come from infrastructure funds - most of which has been inherited from the disbanded Marlborough County Council and Catchment Board for the future capital works [i.e. Floods and Roads]. Further to the ratepayers, there will be another $250,000 contributed per year for ten years,

which equates to approximately $10 per ratepayer, per year. Also, the old theatre may be bought back for $6million to build a library. The total cost will be $11million, or $435 per annum from each ratepayer, as a one-off. The plans the mayor indicates are only artists’ impressions and would not be a financial loss for the Theatre Trust if not used. The construction plans cannot be drawn up until the foundation tests are completed. The Theatre Trust has a wealth of talent: why don’t they use their combined efforts to raise funds for the theatre instead of begging for funds from the ratepayers? [Abridged] Derek [Dicky] Bate

Your

Wedding

2011

Congratulations! You’re about to embark on two amazing adventures - the first, of course, being your life as a wedded couple and the second being the exciting, yet often overwhelming process of planning a wedding...

wedding will probably be the biggest and most involved party or ritual either of you have ever put together. Here are some wedding planning tips to consider. 1) Don’t sweat the small stuff A wedding is full of thousands of details and there are bound to be a few hurdles along the way. It’s to celebrate your love together, which you could do in a mud puddle, if you had to. 2) Take time to savor your wedding So many couples comment that their wedding was a whirlwind that they barely remembered. Consider building in time for reflection- whether it’s a scheduled time between ceremony and reception where the two of you will enjoy a glass of champagne, or the moment when you change into your getaway clothes. 3) Infuse your personality Don’t have a cookie-cutter wedding. Think about your hobbies, cherished memories, and personalities. If you

love to travel, consider naming tables after places you’ve visited together. If you are a fishing aficionado, consider fishbowls with live fish in them as centerpieces. Your wedding will be a thousand times more special and memorable. 4) You don’t have to follow tradition Don’t spend money on things just because you think they’re traditional. If you don’t really want it, don’t do it. 5) Have a wedding you can afford Rather than accruing massive wedding debt, pay for it as you go along. The number one thing couples fight about, according to psychologists and couples therapists, is money. You don’t want to start off married life with a monkey on your back. A big formal wedding is nice for those who can afford it, but you don’t need to “keep up with the Joneses” at the expense of your future happiness. Before you become overwhelmed, take a deep breath and read through our wedding supplement for advice from local industry experts.

In addition people can purchase bulk flowers when wanting to do their own floral arrangements. “We have all sorts of requests everyday which is what makes this job so interesting and rewarding,” Jonel says. “One of the most unusual was a single red rose attached to a bale of hay delivered to the hospital for Valentine’s Day,” she laughs. When it comes to weddings, the Flower Box team specialises in everything from traditional through to the more unique bouquets. “No matter what style you are wanting or how unusual your request, come in and see us at the Flower Box and we will create something beautiful for you, and arrange for it to be delivered,” Jonel says.

Got It Covered are professional wedding and event planners. Got It Covered began in June 2005 with a basic website and a small stock of chair covers out of a family home. Four months later, owners Sue and Luke Spencer left the safety of full time employment and began manufacturing table linen and coloured organza sashes. Their house was soon overrun with linen of all types. Many an hour was spent well into the night hand ironing linen on the family dining table to ensure it was ready for the courier. It wasn’t long before the business out-grew home, and they moved into their current Richmond, Nelson premises. From there the company expanded rapidly, complete with six permanent staff brought in to help with orders, linen, enquiries and customer consultations. Not to mention the large expansion of linen, decorative items

and imported chairs. Dreams of expansion began to take on real possibility with the opening of a second full-time showroom in Blenheim in 2010. The business has come a long way from the dining room table. In 2009 Got it Covered won the Radio Network Small Business Award in the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business awards. Heading up the Blenheim office, Sarah Laplanche brings a wealth of experience having worked in Brisbane for a number of years in wedding and venue design. Beautiful wedding The perfectly polished and shaped nails of a bride are often the focus point of many beautiful wedding photos, so finding the right nail technician for your special day is an important decision. Equally important is for the bridal party to be able to relax and enjoy one on one time while being pampered, says Beautiful Nails technician Melissa Henderson. “Because I operate my business from home it is private, there is no rush, just plenty of time to have a glass of bubbly, put your feet up and unwind while I take care of your nails,” she says. There are many options for

wedding nails including French white acrylic sets which can be applied to short or long nails. For those who already have

long nails but want the French white look, party tips is a great option which only lasts a day, but look fantastic, Melissa says. There are bridal packages available which can also in-

clude acrylic toe nails, manicures, pedicures, waxing and tinting. “With my bridal packages, I book myself out for the entire day so I can dedicate my time to the bride and her bridesmaids. Previous brides have really enjoyed the privacy and relaxed environment and often comment on it being a great experience,” she says. Melissa has been a professional nail technician for more than 13-years and previously owned a salon in Christchurch where she initially trained. Beautiful Nails uses OPI, Orly and INM products.

Bible Answers... with Pastor Jeff Williams

Do you have a Bible question for Jeff? Email us your question at pastor@mbbc.org.nz or post it to us. Full confidentiality is assured at all times.

Q – Why did God allow this latest Christchurch earthquake when he could have prevented it? (Quite a few people up and down the country!) A – “Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” Matthew 27:54 First, let me offer my sincerest sympathies and condolences to all of those affected by the events in Christchurch over the past week. I trust that God’s grace will be sufficient for all who seek his help – our prayers are with those struggling at this time. The standard religious answer for this week’s question is that we don’t know – God’s ways are mysterious – we just have to accept things as they are, etc, etc, etc. A closer look at what the Bible actually says however reveals that God has two major attributes: love and holiness. Every action of God is done with purpose, accomplishing some aspect of his will which is ultimately that, “not...any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Pain, suffering, death and so-called “natural disasters” were not part of God’s original plan – “the wages of sin is death.” God longs to be at peace with his creation – he has paid the ultimate sacrifice (his life!) in order to make it possible for our sins to be forgiven and short of making us repent and believe, will do all within his power to get our attention and bring us under conviction of our sin and need to be saved. Because he has given us a free will, the choice is still ours whether to curse him or cling to him in trials such as the one at hand – but the purpose of such disasters is to bring unbelievers face to face with their mortality and their need for a Saviour; at the same time God shows believers their need to ever more closely depend upon him rather than themselves. As the crowd gathered at Calvary to witness the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, his followers wept and stood around in shock. The unbelievers largely mocked and scoffed –but as the sky grew dark and an earthquake tore the ground apart, some finally came to the place where the recognized and believed in Jesus Christ for who and what he was. As we watch videos of the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake, clearly people are shaken. Some can be seen on camera who, “blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.” It is our prayer that many will alternatively see the hand of a loving and holy God working in their lives and getting their attention about what is truly important in a way they have not seen before.

The Sun

Your week in sport

Sport takes back seat as country mourns It was hard to think about anything else this week after the worst disaster in New Zealand’s history struck a helpless city last Tuesday. As thousands of people scrambled to find fresh water, food, and some sort of power, came to terms with the fact that their city as they know it is gone, and grieved over the horrific scenes that have shocked all of us, it seems absurd that any sporting event was allowed to take place in this country over the weekend. I understand, for a lot of people, there is not a lot they can do, other than lend a hand in the form of a charitable donation. But it seemed more

than slightly inappropriate that a country in a national state of emergency should at the same time be one focusing attention on something as insignificant as a game of sport, as was the case over the weekend. I have no doubt the people involved, especially the players, feel this fact as much as anyone. It must have been incredibly hard for the Highlanders and Chiefs Super Rugby players to focus on scrums and lineouts in Dunedin on Friday night when, only four hours up the road, people in a city resembling a war zone were focusing on trying to salvage bodies so badly injured, some can’t be identified. For the players’ sake, the match

selected who had not been based in Marlborough, he says. He also says his players have not entered tournaments because his club, the Wanderers, were denied entry into the senior interclub competition. Marlborough Boys College player Alex Judd, who is in the college’s top team, says several players are disillusioned after not being picked, or contacted. “In my opinion, they picked a less able team,” he says. “I have played players in the team and feel I could have made it but the end of the story is I was not approached so I couldn’t play, which is disappointing and disappointing for other players too.” This season, Marlborough lost the Blair Cup and Lucas Cup to Nelson, both by 15 matches to one, and the Winstanley Shiled also involving West Coast, by eight matches to none.

Cup selector David Winstanley says the feud between Mooney and the MTA was not a factor in determining which players were selected. “The first criteria is they need to be eligible - and that means they have to be residential in Marlborough and be affiliated with a club,” he says. “They also need to be 18 and under, be up to the skill level, and be suitable to fit into the team culture. “Some of the players Michael has mentioned could have been selected on skill level, but they were not eligible because they were not affiliated with a club, and the players who were omitted haven’t entered anything all year.” But Mooney says he knows of players who were not approached to play, while some players said to be too old were in fact under 18. Players had previously been

should have been Damian George cancelled. A country in this state of emergency should also be one in a state of mourning, and normal transmission should have been suspended. The Crusaders players had no choice but to abandon their game against the Hurricanes on Saturday night, as the closelyknit Canterbury community remained in a state of shock and despair. They will resume their season against the Waratahs this weekend, hopefully never having to play another game as difficult as this one is sure to be.

Former tennis coach questions selections By Damian George Former Marlborough junior tennis coach and selector Michael Mooney has questioned the selection policy of the Marlborough Tennis Association at junior levels, and says it is contributing to the plight of tennis in the region. Mooney, a former New Zealand representative and coach, says the selection policy “appears to be deliberately discriminating” against several top-ranked players who he is coaching, following a dispute between himself and the MTA for which he is currently seeking legal action. He says excluding several highly-ranked players affected the Marlborough side’s chances in the recent Blair Cup, Winstanley Shield and Lucas Cup, which were all lost easily. “My comments are in no way directed at the children selected, who were brave to take on such a mission, and certainly some of them were well up to the task,” he says. “My comments are solely directed at the administration and selector.” Mooney says selecting players as young as 12 and 14 years of age to play in some of the tournaments was unfair on them. “While I acknowledge and admire some of the younger players - I’ve coached some of them - it’s unacceptable to put young, inexperienced kids in against hardened, older junior players,” he says. “I dont think the results are acceptable in context with the players that we have in Marlborough and the fact we could field a team that could probably win these tournaments.” However, Marlborough Blair

No lack of courage here GIRL POWER: Local girl Tyler Gray may be young, but behind the wheel of her ministock she is fast learning what it takes to be a competitive speedway driver. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

By Celeste Lodewyk Fourteen-year-old Tyler Gray may be young but certainly not lacking in courage as she readies to pit her Ministock driving skills to the test this Saturday. Eastern States Speedway is hosting the Ministock Mayhem, featuring adult and youth Ministock drivers. For Tyler the 2010/2011 season has been her first introduction to the motor sport after deciding to follow in her father, Ricco Gray’s footsteps. “Ultimately I want to be racing

Stockcars like dad but because of my age I am starting with Ministocks,” she says. Tyler began the season by leasing a Ministock and registering with Nelson, as there were not enough youth Ministock drivers in Blenheim. After seeing Tyler’s enthusiasm for the sport, Ricco purchased a Ministock for Tyler to work on and eventually race. “She has done most of the work to it herself, first stripping it down to chassis then reassembling it, it’s good

for her to know the ins and outs of a Ministock,” Ricco says. “My plans for it include a white body and a new race number, 222 like dad’s,” Tyler adds. Describing the thrill of racing on the track, Tyler says she feels nervous to start with but after completing a lap she switches focus to the race. “Once you get going it’s really fun. I haven’t won anything yet as I am still working on my speed and confidence but ultimately it’s a great sport for youth to be part of,” she says.
