Drivers; please be responsible By Annabelle Latz Drivers need to be more aware of their habits behind the wheel. This message comes from Monz Johnson of Kaituna. She, her husband and son were the second car after day break to drive past the scene of the fatal car accident south of Ward last Saturday morning. They were on their way to Christchurch, and had just gone through Ward about 8.30am. “We stayed for probably ten minutes with the couple who discovered the vehicle and body, but we knew there was nothing more we could have done. The man had rung the emergency services and they were instructing him what to do, and we left when one of the colunteer fire brigade members arrived.” She said her husband had a search around to make sure there were no other injured persons or bodies. “I’ve never seen anything like that before, and I never want to see it again.” She said she was not judging the situation of that particular accident, but it reminded her of something she feels very strongly about. “I am basically trying to make a point that we see these billboards saying ‘Country people die on country roads,’ but people think it won’t happen to them”. She was very concerned of the repercussions from Saturday morning’s discovery for her 18 year-old son. “I found it bad enough to drive past and see the scene, but my son suffers badly from anxiety.” Although it was a decade ago, the day she and her two children had a near death call with a logging truck on SH6, north of Renwick, still sticks in her mind. He had not stopped at the give way and

instead pulled out in front of them, while Monz was traveling at 100km/h. “It nearly caused us to be decapitated, an older or slower reacting driver could most certainly have ended up underneath the logging truck. Unless people get hurt or killed, the result is generally apathetic. I eventually got a letter of apology from the truck driver.” Monz said drivers need to think of the impact their careless driving has on other people, including professionals who attend accidents and victims. “I think the volunteer fire brigades do such fantastic work. They see horrific things doing their service for the public. I would like to see them get paid for their work.” Her family drives 80km a day during two return trips between Kaituna and Blenheim, and frequently travel to Christchurch. “We see a lot of people not sticking to their side of the road, or not driving to the SPEED limit. People have too much complacency, they are too blazay.”

Barrie Greenall, Highway Patrol, said Monz has grasped a concept that too many people do not seem to grasp. He said drivers are far too complacent far too often, with particular reference to speed and cutting corners. “Drivers don’t comprehend that on a different day with different circumstances there could be a completely different outcome for them cutting that corner. Eventually they will meet someone coming the other way doing exactly the same thing. It can just take fate.” Stop sign protocol is another point of concern for Barrie, especially the Jacksons Rd Old Renwick Rd intersection. “Drivers must look both ways, what if an oncoming car was overtaking?” Barrie wanted to remind drivers to use the Police website to report bad drivers; www. police.govt.nz. Or dial *555. “There’s a huge amount of work that goes on day in and day out for educating. We are not looking at prosecuting, we are looking at educating.”

VOTE 1 Graham Lindsay Carbon footprinting needs a push FOR COUNCIL By Robbie Parkes Since getting their funding as Marlborough’s Economic Development Agency by the Council three years ago, the Marlborough Regional Development Trust (MRDT) wants to get back on track with the region’s carbon footprint plans. The Marlborough District Council held an Environment Committee meeting on March 22 to discuss carbon footprinting in the area and what progress needs to be made.

The MRDT sent a summary of the group’s achievements to

committee members to show there was no need to form a new group to take charge. “There’s one already established,” said Trust Chairman, Graham Lindsay. “We’re just telling them about our news.” Their news included big strides in the development of Biodiesel in the region, all done on a voluntary basis by trustee members after having their funding cut. Graham said the main idea

was to let the Council know that the MRDT have continued their work in carbon footprinting and were open to working with them again. Since their funding was cut, Graham said progress in the area had been on a bit of a hiatus and that awareness does need to grow. “We haven’t seen a hell of a lot of progress.” “It’s important we get people in the community contributing.”

DAYLIghT SAvINgS TO END New Zealand Daylight Saving will end on Sunday, 1 April 2012, when 3.00am becomes 2.00am. People may find it convenient to put their clocks back by one hour before going to bed on Saturday 31 March. As well as changing clocks, the end of daylight saving is an opportune time for people to check their household emergency plans and survival items and home smoke alarms. The period runs from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. This year daylight saving will recommence on 30 September.

gENEROSITY OvERwhELMINg Anita McLean who lost everything in a house fire two weeks ago has been overwhelmed with the genrosity of the Marlborough public. The fire at 49 Park Terrace gutted the house, Anita had no insurance. The public have donated all sorts to help her and her three boys who weren’t in the house at the time. Her landlord Paul Roughan said the fire started in the laundry. He plans to rebuild on the site.

NO SPOTLIghTINg With the start of the ‘roar’ deer hunting season, DOC is reminding hunters spotlighting is not allowed on public conservation land – it is illegal and endangers others. DOC will be working with police locally to be on alert for people hunting unlawfully and to prosecute anyone found doing so. Blenheim ‘man shed’ on its way By Robbie Parkes Blenheim might be getting its very own Man Shed. It is a concept aimed at older or retired men, giving them the opportunity to get together and work on projects such as boatbuilding, woodwork and general tinkering. The idea has made its mark in Picton with the Picton Men’s Community, and is spreading fast. The Marlborough District Council has given Menz Shed Blenheim land to build on, and the group is waiting to hear back on resource consent in the next couple of days. As part of the CPTED project that featured in Wednesday’s Sun, an after school project took place, with children from the neighbourhood meeting everyday after school to build a rocket. Yesterday they were able to admire all their hard work, and took turns being towed around Horton Park in it. Mikayla Auty, 6, had quite an artistic flare. “Painting was my favourite bit.”

Her brother Connor, 8, liked putting the rocket together on the go-kart frame. “We added cardboard and some wood. We also used sellotape so it all stayed there.” Jorja Tautari, 8, said the week was great because they had something to do after school. “We got entertained and stuff, we didn’t have to stay at home and watch TV.” Ella Shott, 9, said it was great fun to play with. “It’s an awesome day to ride in it.” Ross Banbury from Oasis Family Church worked with the children for the week.

He said it was great to see such great involvement, and seeing individual skills shine through. “It’s quite a life skills thing, learning about stacking wood safely, using equipment, and measuring. They learned to focus.” Tracy Cresswell from Elim Church said the highlight was seeing the children admire the finished rocket. “It’s about the kids connecting together. They live so close to each other but often don’t know each other. Dear Ed, Re: More Salmon Farms – Blenheim Sun, 21 March NZ King Salmon sustainably provides top quality, healthy products to New Zealand and global markets. The reason Crail Bay farm was closed after we acquired it was because it didn’t meet the strict environmental standards NZ King Salmon has set for salmon farming. In addition, the current water conditions at Crail Bay are not optimum for growing significant numbers of fish. Staff numbers in the overall company are constant and many staff members affected by the Crail Bay closure have been deployed elsewhere in the company.

We intend to revisit the space and may re-establish the farm using our standard models if our environmental standards can be achieved. However, at the moment we believe this would take some time. We live in an agrarian economy. If our plans are approved, we will be able to generate 120 news jobs bringing in an extra $7 million in wages alone to Marlborough not to mention the other downstream benefits for businesses in our region. Record history accurately Dear Ed, I wholeheartedly agree with Graeme Brooks about history being recorded correct. In the 150 year book on Marlborough Mr Leo McKendry did a remarkable job of research on Transport operators in the province with the help of his team. I supplied information about J A Robinson Ltd plus photos for the book, and names of the drivers in said photo. I received a proof reading of article stating drivers as said to Mr McKendry and printed correctly.

However between then and printing one trivers name was changed from John to Tex. Someone in their wisdom with more knowledge than us changed it. So it goes down in history, Tex drove Joe’s Leyland. At that time Tex was working for R.W.Gille & Sons of where he stayed for about 35 years. This note will not change history now but when someone with the ability of Mr McKendry and his team print some thing don’t change it without first checking. John Simmons

Thanks to good Samaritans Dear Ed, My family and I would like to express our sincere and deep gratitude to the good Samaritans who extended their assistance to my son, Ian Tang. Last Wednesday, 14th March, at about 4.10pm, Ian was thrown off his bike while cycling along Maxwell Road. He had crashed into a stationary Ian Tang station wagon parked at the side of the street near Wairau Hospital. A lady attended to Ian immediately after the crash before one of MBC’s teacher, Mr. G R Erikson happened to pass by. He then took Ian to the emergency service at Wairau Hospital. At the hospital, Ian had stitches put in for the deep laceration below his nostril, his wounds dressed and x-rays taken of his neck. Through God’s help, he has recovered well. We would never forget the compassion and generosity shown by these Samaritans, and the hospital staff in making sure that Ian got the best possible medical attention. The concern and assistance that we received from a lot of people, most of them strangers to us, are proof that people have so much love in their hearts to share. As a fairly regular user of the hospital shuttle bus which runs between Blenheim and Nelson, I was shocked to read that it is to cease at the end of this month. What a short sighted decision that is which, in the long term will cost central government more than at present. From discussions with other people on the trips I have made, all appreciated the comfort and ease with not having to drive over that hilly route. Appointments at Nelson Hospital have all been made to fit into the bus timetable and the fare is half the cost of taking one’s own car. Except for exceptional circumstances, people who have opted to use their own vehicle should only be reimbursed the equivalent bus fare ($30 Return) instead of mileage allowance which in my case is more than double that amount. Is this yet another example of bean counters not counting their beans? Sooner than lose the service altogether, would a three day a week service be a satisfactory solution - Say Monday, Wednesday and Friday? I am all for retaining that service. W H Cox.

Jamming with Joe Satriani By Annabelle Latz It was literally a dream come true for this young guitar fanatic. Mitch Alderlieste heard a guitar playing competition on Radio Hauraki last Wednesday, giving away tickets for the G3 (Joe Satriani) concert in Wellington last weekend. Mitch, a huge Satriani fan and a very good guitar player, rang up immediately, to play a Joe Satriani song on his guitar. “I played Surfing with the Alien, a real Joe Satriani classic.” In Wellington there was another guitar playing competition for backstage passes. “I just thought, well I’ve got to give it a go, try my hardest.” It was irrelevant that he was up against people in their late twenties with more than two year’s guitar experience under their belt like Mitch. “I got a call later that day to say congratulations you’ve won the backstage passes. I was just wrapped!” The concert was amazing, but to sit

in the same room as Satriani and his band was surreal. “We were just sitting casually, having a chat about guitars and things. The time went so quickly.” Mitch also plays drums, and has been brought up listening to his dad’s classic rock collection. “I thought I’d give guitar a go. Listening to musicians like Joe is so inspiring. I’ve always been amazed at what he can do and what he creates.” Mitch practices for about three hours a day. “It’s not like a chore, I just want to get better all the time.” His message to other young musicians is to just practice. “It gets you places.” Mitch wants to be a sound engineer when he finishes school, or perhaps work in radio. And of course he wants to keep playing guitar, hopefully with Joe. “Next time I’m aiming to get on stage with Joe Satriani, I’ll send him a few video demos in the meantime.”

Swimming safe with Koru Koru the Kiwi came to Whitney Street School on Wednesday to promote swimming safety as part of the State Kiwi Swim Safe Programme. The programme aims to develop primary school student’s ability, knowledge and skills when it comes to water safety. Brenda Goulter, Schools Swim Safe Advisor for Nelson and Marlborough has been to twenty-two schools with Koru already, teaching kids the basics. “Basics from blowing bubbles, to paddling, to kicking.”

The programme focuses on teaching kids in the classroom, at the pool and on the beach, while also helping teachers to relay those lessons. “It’s free too, which is good.” Charlie Wilson and Mac Brown from Lisa Lissaman’s new entrant class both liked seeing Koru the Kiwi as part of the Kiwi Swim Safe Programme. Both boys have ticks and stickers from the learning to swim programme and Charlie said he has really enjoyed it.“We’ve been learning to swim.”

Bereaved families urged to help A road safety charitable trust is seeking people affected by a road crash to get in contact and help pass on road safety messages to communities. The charity Brake is particularly looking for people who have been bereaved or seriously injured in a crash and who would be willing to share their story and help others to

learn from their experiences. Brake will be communicating vital road safety messages as part of Road Safety Week (7-13 May), and those who get involved would be asked to provide a case study of their experience and to provide quotes and/or give interviews to media during the Week to support these messages. “If you’ve been affected by a road

English boxed setting surprises Story and photo by Stephanie Choate Tall cedar hedges and rose-lined brick walls separate the gardens at Upton Oaks, like rooms in a rambling country house. Each doorway in the hedges reveals an alluring surprise—a wild and natural olive grove, an inviting tiled pool, espaliered trees bursting with apples. Sue and Dave Monahan have developed the gardens around their renovated 1911 villa over decades, creating a mix of formal and informal designs. “It’s natural for me to want to make a nice environment around my home,” Sue said. “I’ve just done what I liked.” Upton Oaks is a popular spot for tour groups, garden enthusiasts, and couples planning a wedding, and has been featured in several gardening books. The formal knot garden, styled in a 17th century design, is perhaps the centerpiece of the 1.5-acre property. Neatly trimmed English box hedges twist in a latticed geometric pattern on a tidy clipped lawn. Bright flowers fill the bays, a different color in each section. Structure is everywhere at Upton Oaks, in a mix of formal and informal elements.

“Structure is backbone of your garden, it holds the garden together,” she said. Sue uses trees, seating, and plants of different heights and textures throughout the garden. Pedosporum trimmed into simple balls are dotted amongst looser flowers, anchor the flowerbeds and creating weight and contrast. The hedges and topiary look beautiful year round, Sue said, whether surrounded by bright blooms in the summer or sparkling with frost in the winter. When the Monahans bought the property nearly 25 years ago, the house was surrounded by an overgrown sheep paddock. “I had a blank canvas to work with, which was great,” Sue said. Sue put hours of careful thought into planning the gardens, and has developed them gradually. “It’s a matter of trial and error and getting out there and getting your hands dirty,” she said. Sue loves meeting other gardening enthusiasts, seeing them enjoy what she has done, and comparing tips. “You don’t stop learning, and every year is a new season,” she said.

Pumpkin perfection By Annabelle Latz Gordy McCallum said it has not been the best season for growing pumpkins. While he holds his most recent prodigy weighing 75.7kg. “Twelve years ago I grew one that weighed 132kg!” But considering the lack of sunshine this summer, Gordy was happy with this year’s effort. His giant pumpkin caused much reaction from passers by at the Flaxbourne A&P Show earlier this month. It was his first year at Flaxbourne A&P, and he thoroughly enjoyed the day. “There were quite a few people who asked if it was

real.” He’s lived in three different houses on Litchfield St, so perhaps it’s something in the soil. “The seeds for this pumpkin were from a 420kg pumpkin in Kaitaia, where the world record stood until it was recently beaten by a man in Canada.” Gordy said he’ll keep growing pumpkins, because he likes to do something a bit different. “Growing pumpkins is a bit of fun. I enjoy doing things that other people don’t do.” He said it’s hard to know how a pumpkin has formed on the inside, and guessed this one must have thick

walls. “It’s quite small, but very heavy.” Gordy likes roast pumpkin the best, and when he does eat this one, he’ll put some seeds aside to grow some more. “We live on a back section here, so no one ever has a clue what’s going on!” 25 years ago Gordy designed a fly trap, that is now sold all over the world. It was the prize at Flaxbourne Show for guessing the weight of the pumpkin, with the two prize winners guessing within 700 grams of the actual weight.

But an unfortunate bout of cold weather on the Friday minimised crowd numbers for entertainment that evening, although weather cleared up well on the Saturday when the Warratahs played. He said there has not been the agriculture focus for the 10 years that he has been involved in the Show, and described it as a more metropolitan event. “I’ve never seen tractors there. This is our aim, but there is just so much horticulture on the Wairau Plane now.” He said the best way to attract more agriculture to the Show is by word of mouth. “It’s a matter of getting out there and talking to people. You can advertise until your heart is content but it all starts

with communicating positive news with your friends. ” Mike Johnston, of Tyreland, said he had a great day at Flaxbourne A&P Show. “It was well operated, well run. He said it is a different type of show from Marlborough A&P. “It was all cockies at Flaxbourne, and there’s not nearly as many at Marlborough.” He agreed it would be a good idea to see more agricultural trade on display at Marlborough A&P. “There has been a move away form what the A&P show is about, which is farming.”

Beach Volleyballer vying for Olympics Story and photo by Robbie Parkes Going to the London Olympics may well become a reality for Micha Lindsay-Brown, who has just returned from the Oceania beach volleyball qualifiers with a bronze at Mount Maunganui. Micha, along with teammate Julia Tilley have now reached the third stage of the Olympic qualifying rounds in Shanghai, China. After their first stage of Oceania qualifiers win in Samoa back in 2011, their top three finish at Mount Maunganui was a must for reaching the third phase. “It’s not one-hundred percent guaranteed but we’re part way.

We know it’s a really small chance.” The duo work with another pair as part of the qualifiers and if one did not make it, neither would the other. “We had to do well and so did they. We had to be the top two teams in New Zealand to represent the country.” She said each stage gets harder, especially when the second phase introduced teams who rank in the top ten in the world and already have Olympic spots. Brawl in the hall Story and photo by Robbie Parkes Pro wrestling may not be the biggest competitive sport in New Zealand, but the ring is definitely on its way to the main stage. ‘Lethal’ Lazza Stevens of Southern Championship Wrestling said the sport is growing, and with the likes of Saturday’s Brawl in the Hall in Blenheim coming up, it can only get bigger. “Even though it’s limited tickets, it’s high demand.” “It’s definitely expanding.” “We’re the only active wrestling promoters in the South Island.” The SCW has only recently begun the process of officiating themselves as a legitimate group, by getting 15 members to sign a constitution. “Once we had that we had to submit it to SPARC.” “It’s basically the same as any sports club.” SPARC has given them the green light and potential sponsorship, along with AGM’s and the like looks to be on the horizon. The group has been around since 2009, but recent growth has only really allowed the club to expand. SCW originally began with a pro wrestler from Wellington coming to Blenheim and training an interested person from Marlborough Boys. By 2009 the training had become public and SCW performed its first show. Lazza turned to the sport professionally the same year, but only after a lifelong obsession. He wrestles, but also trains the group juniors, aged 14 to 16, who sometimes get to perform in their shows. Defending champ, Lazza, said there is a particular rival he has his eyes on and has demanded a match for Saturday’s show. “He’s hungry for it and wants it, and I’ve made the call to management.” The SCW belt itself is American-made, a trophy made by the same people who make the wrestling belts around the world.
