Builder Jon Haack finds the new building rules, which came into effect last week, confusing and a bit of a joke.

By Annabelle Latz Jon Haack says the public will be confused with the new building law.

The Department of Building and Housing introduced the Licensed Building Practitioners Scheme on March 1.

Jon Haack, of Haack Construction Ltd has been in the building industry for 36 years, as a qualified builder and as a business owner.

According to this new scheme, Jon is not qualified enough to hold a builder’s license to allow him the authority to sign off the ‘critical building work’ of a project his company is working on.

This is because under this scheme, criteria he

must meet to obtain a license includes using tools on site within the last 10 years.

Instead, responsibility of checking off technical work of a project has to be passed over to one of his on-site builders, some of who he has personally trained.

The DBH states that Restricted Building Work ensures houses are built safely, with technical aspects being checked over by a qualified person.

“I don’t think this scheme has been thought through, that’s my concern,” said Jon. He said this scheme could be detrimental to his business, if the public now perceive that he is not qualified enough to sign off technical work himself.

The process to obtain a license was what Jon found hard enough to come to grips with.

“I could have easily told them I work with tools, and I wouldn’t have been checked.”

He has a site license, which allows him to drive onto building sites, but still has no right to sign off technical work.

He supports the scheme’s new requirement for ongoing training for builders, who must accumulate points each year from reading material and attending courses and seminars.

But he said this scheme is not the correct approach for stopping events like Leaky Homes.

Oyster bliss The booming Bluff Oyster season is now in full swing and Marlborough seafood lovers are enjoying their first taste of the Southland delicacies.

Tony Gill (right), was one of the first customers on Saturday morning at Guytons to devour a Bluff oyster.

Guytons Fresh Seafood general manager Andy Leonard said he was expecting a strong demand for the iconic New Zealand oyster.

“This year’s season will run through to July and we are expecting a good outcome,” he says.

In previous years Guytons has sold out toward the end of the season, so to avoid disappointment Andy is advising people to ring in their orders or call in to their Grove Road store early.

“We are selling Bluff Oysters by the dozen in pottles so get in early and don’t miss out,” he says. The oyster season opened on March 1st.

No immediate plans for Butter Factory site The former Butter Factory site on the corner of SH1 and Alabama Rd will stay empty for the next three years.

This is according to the Draft Regional Land Transport Strategy, agreed on at the Regional Transport Committee meeting last Friday.

The draft plan is due to go to public consultation on Monday March 19, and end Monday April 30.

“There will be no construction for at least two years,” said Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter, regarding last Friday’s decision.

For the next three years $7.4

million will be available for Marlborough’s road projects, including upgrades and road changes of all scales.

The site of the Butter Factory was not considered urgent for this round’s funding.

“Our project list is greater than we have funding for,” said Frank.

Some projects that are proposed for this round’s fund include a safety barrier system for SH1 between Blenheim and Picton, construction at the Jacksons Rd and Old Renwick Rd intersection, bridge strengthening on the North Bank Rd, work at the SH1/62 intersection at Spring

Creek and a start to construction of the realignment of the Dashwood overbridge.

“Projects are ranked on their strategic fit in terms of government policy, their effectiveness and economic benefits,” said Frank.

The Butter Factory site (right)is currently in the design phase, and will then join the queue to be included in the next round of funding.

The design proposal is to install right-turn and left-turn bays into Alabama Rd, and a stacking area big enough for long vehicles to wait to enter SH1 clear of the railway line.

Gas levels nothing to worry about

By Annabelle Latz Potential buyers for Forest Park View subdivision will be made aware of gas levels at the development, but assured there is nothing to worry about.

Carbon Dioxide levels were investigated at the subdivision, off Rowan Pl, because of the unused landfill next to the site, and it was discovered the level was higher than normal.

The investigation, which took place just before Christmas, revealed that Co2 levels were sitting between 2 and 3%, instead of the usual level of 1%.

Marlborough District Council’s CEO Andrew Besley said that because of the wet weather around Christmas time, Co2 levels were higher.

He said that a house built on a site there would only contain one sixtieth of the outside gas level of 2-3%.

“This shows that there is no issue

But he also said that this scheme will not solve problems like leaky homes, but just adds cost and paperwork to his business.

“This license has been pushed

through as an example of who should be licensed, but being licensed wouldn’t have stopped leaky homes.”

Professionals that fall under the new licensing scheme also include designers, carpenters, roofers, external plasterers, brick and blocklayers, and foundations specialists.

Dog Point Vineyard viticulturalist Nigel Sowman is keeping his fingers crossed for improved weather before harvest starts later this month.

This is the latest harvest he has experienced in his 10 years at Dog Point.

By Annabelle Latz The first grapes will be picked within the next three weeks in Marlborough, and vintage is predicted to be a lighter one this year.

A cooler summer has postponed the start date, although the flavour of the grapes won’t be affected, despite the delayed ripening.

Pockets of Marlborough will experience a reduced crop size due to late flowering.

Currently, based on a recent Pre-Vintage survey, New Zealand Winegrowers estimates a national harvest of around 300,000 tonnes of grapes, down from the record 328,000 tonnes in 2011, although this can vary.

Wine Marlborough General Manager Marcus Pickens said Marlborough makes up 75% of New Zealand’s harvest, with last year’s harvest amounting to 244,893 tonnes.

“Marlborough won’t be uniformly light. There will still be patches of heavy crops which makes it an interesting few weeks.”

Scientist at Plant and Food Research Rob Agnew said Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is looking particularly good this season.

“A lot of people think late harvest will be dyer, but things are looking okay, we just need this fine weather to continue.”

In terms of the harvest being later this year, Rob said start dates must be put in a 20 year context, and that people needn’t get too worried.

He recalled June 1991 when Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted, causing huge amounts of ash and sulfur dioxide to spill into the air, reducing sunlight by 10%.

“The 1992 to 1993 season was the coldest on record for Marlborough.”

The Sun understands the price being paid for this year’s crop ranges between $1100 to $1350 per tonne.

These prices are subject to variables such as heaviness of yield.

A source close to The Sun says the spot price has already been quoted as high as $1800 per tonne, on a small hectare block.

Picton bears brunt of storm

By Annabelle Latz and Christina McDonald Picton looked worse for wear on Saturday morning after high winds and heavy rain battered the town overnight.

Local boat builder Jim Carey had a mess to attend to when he visited his boat shed.

“The big roller doors had blown in, and some of the iron was blown off the north side of the building.”

The shed was unable to be used as a work space this week, as he waited for assessors from Port Marlborough to come and look at the damage and organise repairs.

“I can’t even work inside my building, it’s making life very awkward for me.”

Blenheim got off lightly in comparison.

Jim was in Blenheim during Friday night, and was at the supermarket on Saturday morning when he received the phonecall that Picton had received lots of storm damage.

“I was told to get down there!”

High wind gusts between 50 and 70kmh blew between 2.30am on Saturday through to 7am.

“There were many boat shed doors blown in, skylights smashed, and a couple of sheds down on Picton Marina,” said Dick Chapman, President of Coastguard Marlborough.

Although Blenheim did not receive such extreme weather, the trees along the Taylor River were damaged, and branches fell into the water.

Owner of the River Queen, Peter Makin,

said some fallen branches were “pretty much” blocking the river, and with a new propeller he was not prepared to risk it.

He tried putting a rope around some of the branches, but without success.

“I just couldn’t hold on.”

Subsequently, Tuesday’s cruises were cancelled and Mr Makin contacted the Marlborough District Council to arrange for contractors to shift the damage.

He said it was particularly urgent to remove the branches now, when they can be easily located and before the tide sweeps them under and presents a hidden hazard.

The River Queen was used as a platform for arborists to get to some of the dangerous fallen trees and loose branches.

“By using the River Queen, the council could access branches they would not have readily been able to reach from other places,” said Mr Makin.

Mr Makin is thankful to the council for their cooperation and quick action.

“I’m just delighted to have such cooperation from the council. We have worked hard to build such a relationship and it seems that it has worked.”

He was hopeful the debris would be cleared for cruises on Wednesday, but was also looking ahead to an “adventure” in May which would see the River Queen sailed across Cloudy Bay to Picton.

Interislander and Bluebridge ferries cancelled all sailings on Saturday due to very rough waters, but sailings continued Sunday, without causing disruption to too many passengers.

Picton heading Farmers’ market Proves text PoPular

Twice Baked Goats Cheese Soufflé Makes 6 60g butter, plus extra for buttering moulds 60g flour 350mls milk 4 eggs yolks 200g goats cheese, crumbled 1 tsp salt 1 Tblsp shredded parmesan cheese 1 tsp ground white pepper 4 egg whites Pre heat oven to 180 C. Brush moulds with some melted butter.

Make a béchamel sauce then add the egg yolks, goat’s cheese, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Scrape into a large bowl.

Whisk the egg whites till soft peaks. Fold the egg whites a 1/3 at a time into the goats’ cheese béchamel until it is all incorporated.

Pour into prepared moulds, 1.5 cm from the top. Place in an ovenproof dish; bake au bain marie, using boiling water, bake 20 minutes until firm to the touch and well puffed. Remove from the oven. They will flatten slightly. Wait a few minutes then gently remove from moulds.

The soufflés can now be stored covered in the refrigerator until needed.

To serve, place the chilled soufflés in a baking paper lined ovenproof dish, pour over ¼ cup of cream per soufflé and place in a 200c preheated oven for 8 to 12 minutes until heated through and well puffed.

Serve on a bed of rocket scattered with toasted pinenuts and a drizzle of olive oil with a glass of Yealands Estate Riesling.

Trents Wholesale up for sale

By Annabelle Latz Trents Wholesale Ltd on Stuart St will be sold when its doors close next month.

After April 20, goods will be supplied from Trents in Nelson, which includes chilled and frozen distribution.

Trents manager in Blenheim Paul Stanton is subsequently losing his job, but is positive that he and his fellow 11 staff losing their jobs will find employment.

“Word of mouth seems to have been impressive, a good 50% of the staff have already had interviews for new jobs.”

The priority for Paul has been to keep communication lines between him and his staff open.

He has helped people put to-

gether CV’s for job interviews, and offer advice and encouragement as much as he can.

“My job here is to help out my staff. We are a pretty close group here.”

Paul, who has been with Trents for 18 years, including 10 years as manager, is not sure what job he will do after the final day of operation on April 20, but has a few ideas in mind.

“I’ve got a plan A, B and C at the moment.”

Foodstuffs South Island Wholesale operations general manager John Mullins, who is based in Christchurch, said the closure in Blenheim is due to centralisation of industry sevices, and improved transport systems.

“From Nelson we can take an order from a customer in Blenheim, and deliver the next morning.”

Trents provides for cash and carry, and serviced orders.

Trents Wholesale in Nelson involves three times as many staff, and five times the capacity, as Blenheim.

Trents Wholesale in Blenheim is on 7400 sq m of land, with a dwelling including the warehouse, bulk store, office, canopy, of 2402 sq m.

“We have had a fair bit of interest in the sale at this stage.”

The Timaru branch of Trents is also closing its doors, with affecting nine people.

“The positive news here is the confidence we have of seeing our staff into jobs,” said Paul.

NIWA described recent weather in New Zealand as extremely cloudy, with 75% below normal sunshine totals. Eastern areas experienced cooler than usual temperatures, caused by cooler sea temperatures.

Below average temperatures (between 0.5°C and 1.2°C below average) were observed in the Kaikoura Coast and Blenheim.

The nationwide average temperature in February was 16.4°C (0.8°C below the 1971–2000 February average), using NIWA’s seven-station temperature series which begins in 1909.

There was below normal rainfall (between 50 and 79 percent of February normal) for the Kaikoura coast.

Child CanCer Month

March is Child Cancer Month, featuring Beads of Courage day on Friday March 23. The Child Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit charity providing emotional, practical and financial support to children and their families affected by child cancer. Marijuana addiction Book details struggle against drugs

By Annabelle Latz It will be a very honest discussion about her former life of drugs and tragically difficult moments.

She calls herself Kate K, and the 44 yearold former marijuana addict is launching her book; Matters To A Head.

Seeing it originally as a bit of fun at high school, the habit of marijuana smoking landed her in hospital four times, and she lost a very good friend.

“It has been a hard time for me and my family.”

With two degrees and a supportive network, Kate has come through the other side of mental illness, depression, and a drug addiction.

Kate Kennedy is launching her book in Blenheim next month, about her battle with drug addiction. the launch coincides with new Zealand book month.

She has now been clean for 11 years.

Her message for other users is a clear one.

“If you start getting into trouble with it, or realise that you can’t stop, it’s a really good idea to get some help with it.”

Kate will have lots of support when she speaks next week, including her mum and dad who live in Blenheim.

They are originally from Motueka, and Kate currently lives in Paraparaumu.

Kate’s book launch will be part of an evening with other authors, and is part of NZ Book Month.

Blenheim has enough car parking. I don’t see the bottom layer of the carpark building filling up.

I find it terrible to find a park.

And taking parks away and putting trees where parks were, it doesn’t encourage people to come to town at all.

It’s good, we just need more free parking.

I find it good, not a problem at all. Our parking is cheap compared to other places.

Sometimes it is hard to get a park, but I did drive straight into one today.

I usually park in the AA carpark as I am a member, or the Harvey Norman carpark.

So it’s not a problem for me at all.

Naked truth Dear Editor, My concern is with the totally inappropriate and offensive photos printed on page 27 of the latest issue, explicitly the nudist photos.

This is abhorent in a publication for general viewing and I, for one, was offended when I flicked open (and quickly shut) the page.

Moral standards have reached a low level when a community newspaper publishes such content.

The article is bad enough, without the accompanying photos.

Does the editorial team consider

the readership of these community newspapers, particularly the message being given to young people, who have yet to, or are still, forming impressions of acceptable/unacceptable moral and ethical standards?

I am a mature adult and am really concerned at the inappropriate messages that younger generations are receiving from the media.

I trust the editor(s) will take this concern on board and be more considerate of the readership before publishing any more of this type of material.

Dear Editor, I was saddened to read Steve Mason’s petty comments in his blog on March 2nd in the Marlborough Express.

Does a little competition from a small community newspaper scare him that much?

Readers may remember that the Midweek came into existence shortly after the Sun began being delivered

Supporting Families Awareness Week 5 - 11 March 2012 “ C h i l d r e n l i v i n g i n t h e P r e S e n C e o F M e n tA l i l l n e S S ”

this year’s Supporting Families Awareness Week is focusing on the children of parents with mental illness.

Running from March 5-11, SF Marlborough is promoting its programme called “WEKA - Well Equipped Kids Achieve”.

The purpose of this programme is to support Tamariki/Children by increasing their knowledge of mental illness and developing skills to live a healthy life.

Through the sharing of experiences, fun activities and education, these children will gain the tools and knowledge to make

healthier choices in their lives.

This programme incorporates a holistic and strength based approach to develop Tamariki and whanau ‘resilience’ through developing their self esteem, creativity, humour and optimism and secure boundaries.

Goals:

• To understand the types of mental illness and symptoms.

Katie’s story

By Celeste Lodewyk Local woman Katie O’Docherty was 12-years of age when she first experienced her mother’s struggle with mental illness.

“I can remember my mother going crazy and overdosing and being taken to live in a mental health facility.

This was a very confusing time for Katie who did not understand what was happening and what was causing her mother to act the way she was.

“I began visiting mum at the facility on weekends but I still didn’t understand properly what was happening as everyone kept the truth from me, it was a pretty scary time,” she says.

After five years of living at the facility on and off, Katie’s mother returned home which in Katie’s opinion was the wrong move.

“Alcohol became involved and she drank every night, so every night was hell,” she says.

In her early teens Katie felt alone, unsupported by her family and ill equipped to deal with her mother’s mental illness, which led to rebellion and wagging school.

“For a long time I thought no-one loved me so it would have been better for me to have an understanding of what was happening so I could learn to better deal with the situation.

“I had no-one to talk to about my experiences which is scary when you are young,” she says.

In the end Katie’s mother ended up in the criminal system as a result of her illness before passing away two years ago.

“It was sad but good that now she is at peace.”

After becoming a mother Katie made herself a promise that she would choose a different path to her mother by showing her children love and providing a stable home life.

“I am lucky to have a supportive husband who has stood by me for the past 11 years that we have been together and to be honest, I wouldn’t change my life as my experiences have made me a stronger person.

“Life is better now; I miss my mother in a different way to how others would feel, but most of all I miss the mother-daughter relationship that I should have had with her.

“There have been a lot of life skills I have had to learn myself like cooking a meal.

“I am a mother to two beautiful girls now and am taking steps to catch up on the schooling I missed out on, so my future is looking brighter every day,” Katie says.

Katie encourages others who are or have been in similar situations to her, to make contact with SF Marlborough.

“The suppor t from SF Marlborough has been amazing.

They have helped to link me to supportive networks and I honestly wouldn’t have got through without it!”

We provide, Support, Advocacy, Education and Information to the families of the Marlborough community who may have a family member that has a mental illness and or addiction issue.

Support: Personal and emotional, for family/whänau members. 1 to 1 or peer group meetings.

Advocacy: Advocate and liaison with agencies for family/whänau. Promote self-advocacy skills.

Education: workshops to assist families to gain knowledge and understanding, i.e. depression, coping strategies Information: on various mental illnesses or addiction, relevant community and government services

The Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds is a spectacular 71km coastal walking track.

Pelorus Track

A semi-remote forest experience in the mount Richmond Forest Park.

It leads up the Pelorus Valley and over the Bryant Range to either the Hacket carpark or the Brook right in Nelson city. The Pelorus is a three to four day tramp best suited to fit experienced trampers.

The track is well serviced with huts. Hunting and fishing in uniquely remote and beautiful locations.

Parents Katrina Curtis and Stephen Gill were thrilled to become new parents, and even more thrilled when Olivia made her entrance on January 1.

In addition to her special title, Olivia was the couple’s first child and has the unique birth date 1.01.11.

“It’s a date that’s special and easy to remember,” says Stephen.

A content baby from birth Olivia, who is now aged 15 months, is a very happy little girl and loves being around other kids.

“From day one she has loved going to day care and has plenty of friends already,” Stephen says.

Olivia celebrated her first birthday this year, and with New Year’s Day being a notoriously difficult day to celebrate birthdays, she enjoyed a combined party with friends.

A quieter week for Police Drug arrests

Wednesday proved eventful for a 70-yearold Renwick retired male after being arrested for assault, possession of cannabis and a cannabis utensil after a domestic related incident.

Later that night a 20-year-old male painter was arrested on a warrant for his arrest for breaching the conditions of his supervision.

Drug searches were executed at a Muller Road address on Thursday which resulted in the arrest of a 42-year-old female beneficiary. The woman was arrested for possession of Methamphetamine utensils, possession of cannabis utensils, possession of cannabis seeds and for obstructing Police.

Sheep shot

The shooting and theft of five sheep in Canvastown last month resulted in the arrest of a 36-year-old male manager.

He was arrested for theft and for using a firearm to commit an offence which took

place on February 25.

A 22-year-old hairdresser was arrested for possession of cannabis utensils after Police executed a search warrant at a Muller Road address.

Later that day a 33-year-old male welder was arrested for assaulting a female, burglary and trespass after he allegedly broke into his ex-partners address in Riversdale and assaulted her.

Theft and assault

Friday began with the arrest of a 58-year-old male in Blenheim for failing to appear in the Nelson District Court.

At 1:50pm a 33-year-old male was arrested and held for detox after being found on Nelson St, intoxicated and incapable of looking after himself.

Hours later a 20-year-old male was arrested for taking a pair of boxer shorts from The Warehouse Blenheim store.

Ending the day Police arrested a 37-yearold male at 10:20pm for assaulting a

Dog unit called twice female at a Redwood Street address.

Threatening behaviour

The Blenheim dog unit was called out twice on Monday night and in both cases Police are appealing for information on either incidents.

Police were called to a Cresswell Lane address after a resident disturbed a male who had entered a vehicle in the driveway of the address.

The offender was chased from the property and the dog unit tracked the offender into the Lucas Street area.

Police have spoken to the occupants of the Lucas Street address and enquiries are continuing.

Police were again called out at 1:45am Tuesday morning after occupants of a Muller Road address disturbed a male on the property.

The dog unit tracked but failed to locate the offender.

Any information regarding these two incidents, please contact the Blenheim Police.

Saturday was quiet for Police with only three arrests made.

In the early hours a 35-year-old female nurse aid was arrested for threatening behaviour and held for detox after an altercation in Goodman Street.

Later that day at 2:10pm a 33-yearfemale beneficary was arrested for shoplifting at a Countdown supermarket.

In Renwick a 21-year-old male driver was arrested at 11:30pm for disorderly behaviour.

Vehicle impounded

Sunday saw six arrests made, beginning at 2:25am with the arrest of a 30-year-old factory worker for disorderly behaviour after an incident involving another male on Scott Street.

A 23-year-old factory worker was also arrested for disorderly behaviour after

being involved in the same incident on Scott Street.

At 3:50am a 25-year-old male was arrested for being unlawfully on a Redwood Street property without a lawful excuse.

Later that day at 2:50pm a 27-year-old female was found driving a motor vehicle whilst being disqualified to do so. The woman was arrested and her vehicle was impounded.

On a matter relating to a historic theft, a 21-year-old male and a 21-year-old female were arrested at 3:40pm.

Now twice as good.

Wairau Community Clinic Ltd Clinical Nurse Leader Full Time Practise Nurse 0.5 FTE (20hrs per week) Reception Staff Full Time Equivalent The Wairau Community Clinic Ltd, a division of Kimi Hauora Wairau Marlborough Primary Health will open a new General Practice Clinic on 2 April 2012. The practice will enrol patients and provide a full range of general practice services. It is collocated with the Marlborough After Hours GP Service on the Wairau Hospital site.

We are seeking nursing and reception staff to support the GP who will work across 5 days.

The Clinical Nurse Leader role is full time and requires a NZ Registered Nurse with experience in general practice and chronic conditions management, excellent service coordination skills and the vision to establish outstanding nursing services and clinics to support and be supported by the General Practitioner. The role reports to the CEO Marlborough Primary Health Organisation and professionally to the Associate Director of Nursing (Primary Care) Marlborough PHO. The Practice Nurse position is part time across 5 days and requires a New Zealand Registered Nurse with Practice Nursing experience who would enjoy working in a new clinic providing the full range of practice nurse skills and patient support. The Practice Nurse reports to the Clinical Nurse Leader. There is an opportunity to combine this role with that of the After Hours Nurses to create an integrated nursing roster.

The Receptionist position is full time but may be shared among two or more people. The role requires an experienced receptionist with the professional and interpersonal skills to carry out the reception duties of a new busy general practice.

The Receptionist position also offers an opportunity for flexible hours and the development of a integrated reception roster with the Marlborough After Hours GP Service.

Being a kid is so much fun

That’s exactly what was happening at Dillons Point Community Play Centre on Monday as the community came together to celebrate ‘Children’s Day’.

Babies, toddlers and preschoolers all enjoyed a morning of rock painting, a bouncy castle, arts, crafts and a special morning tea.

Centre co-ordinator Caroline Piesse says in addition to Children’s Day, Dillons Point C o m m u n it y Play Centre was also celebrating its 25th year of operation.

The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce and BNZ hosted the Prime Minister John Key last week in Blenheim.

In his speech last Thursday morning, Mr Key spoke of the importance of the Marlborough region to the national economy, and highlighted key issues including the expansion of local tourism infrastructure, and development of much stronger branding and strategy for the region.

Mr Key’s visit was part of The Marlborough Chamber’s 2012 BNZ Partners’ Speaker Series, which was started by a visit from BNZ Chief Economist Tony Alexander in February.

Springlands School try a ‘tryathlon’ The annual Weetbix Tryathlon was in Nelson last Sunday, and the event was blessed with blue skies.

Springlands School was well represented among the 1500 children giving the swimming, biking and running event a go, with 50 participants for the team and individual entries. .

Springlands School wanted to thank their sports co-ordinator Suzie Glover, for a great day and fantastic effort.

Children aged between 7 and 15 swim between 50 and 200 metres, bike between 4 and 8 km, and run 1.5km.

Egypt here we come Photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim teenager Braedon O’Brien has already begun packing his bags as he prepares to leave New Zealand to compete at the Junior World Championship for Taekwondo in Egypt at the beginning of April.

Braedon was selected late last year to join the national team representing NZ at the World renowned championship.

Braedon and his proud parents, Jill and Colin O’Brien plan to fly to Egypt on March 30. and making this possible has been all thanks to the local community.

The O’Brien family immediately began fundraising to cover Braedon’s $8000 expenses which to date has almost been reached.

“We held a fundraising night at Bamboo Garden Restaurant where 109 attended and raised over $3000.

“We have also had cash donations from local businesses and organisations, including the Spring Creek District Lions Club which donated $750.

“So a huge thanks to everyone who has been generous and supportive,” Jill says.

Braedon says his goal is to return with a gold medal, something his parents believe is very possible.

“Only he can do it so it is great he has set himself this goal.

“He has been training really hard for the World Championship and believe he can go all the way,” Jill says.

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Frances Watson has always liked to keep active, and her most recent sport has been swimming which she happens to be pretty good at.

At the Special Olympics Ribbon Day in Nelson last month she picked up two second and two third placings in her races, including relays, back stroke and freestyle.

“I like freestyle the best, and now I’m learning how to do butterfly.”

Frances used to tenpin bowl, but at the moment dedicates her time to swimming.

“I like the exercise, I like to keep fit.”

Next year she is looking forward to heading to Dunedin for Special

Olympics, to better this year’s performance. ”I would love to get first.”

In her spare time, Frances likes to knit, and at the moment is creating a blanket for winter, which she’s not sure whether to keep for herself or give to a friend.

Frances likes to spend time in Marlborough’s outdoors, which she says keeps her healthy too.

“I like the blue sky.”

The ten-pin bowling open day for Special Olympics last Saturday was a great success, with 35 participants.

“It was absolutely fantastic, it looks like ten pin bowling will really take off for Special Olympics here in Marlborough,” said Special Olympics com-

Smashing a national cycling record

By Annabelle Latz He heard the commentator announce he was about to break a New Zealand record as he cycled the final bend to the home straight, and describes it as the best feeling ever.

“It was just fantastic,” said Quinn Karwowski, who broke the record for 500m Time Trial at last weekend’s New Zealand Age Group Track Championships in Invercargill.

The 15 year-old from Renwick has been cycling for four years, after his older brother Cameron, who goes to Belgium this month to represent New Zealand in cycling, convinced his parents to buy him a bike too.

“It’s so much fun, it’s a great

way to get around if you don’t have a drivers licence, it keeps you fit and you get to see parts of Marlborough that other people never get to see.”
