Resounding support: Marlborough was splashed with the colours of red and black on Friday as the community dressed in support of Christchurch for Red and Black Day. Among the supporters were Blenheim New World Supermarket service deli ladies (Back) Jess Aitken, Dani Mulholland, Lynette Scott, Ashleigh Brownlee and (front) Margaret Barton, Audrey Rice, Ruth Wilson and Tess O’Fagen. Shoppers were appreciative of the gesture, with one Christchurch woman commenting; “It means a lot to see the Blenheim community dressing up and showing their support.”

By Damian George A mad rush by motorists to stockpile petrol amid predictions prices could soar as high as $2.50 a litre saw the Gas Renwick Petrol Station cleaned out of 91-octane yesterday. “In two years and three months of having the service station, we have never run out of 91 before,” co-owner Rata Harper says. An article in the Dominion Post yesterday reported a leading oil economist forecasting
prices could top the $2.50 mark “within weeks” if action was not taken. “Once it’s in the paper, people think it’s going to happen,” Rata says. “We had a real rush on yesterday and the day before. We had to put a limit on the amount people could buy so no one was stuck without any petrol.” The independently owned service station still had plenty of diesel and 95-octane but had to
enforce the cap on 91-octane as more petrol was not due until 4am this morning. “We couldn’t allow a person to come in and take a thousand litres because that’s not fair on the next person who needs to get some to get into town.” As for the predicted rises, Rata says the estimate is just “tipping the iceberg”. “You think how much it’s gone up in the last week and no one saw it coming. It’s a colossal amount.” Continued Page 2.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: Helen Crampton, Bev Hodgetts, Rhonda Stewart, Sonia Tafilipepe, Nic Bicknell, Thelma Sowman and Ngaire Searle are the first seven ladies to join the Gold and Blue Club. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.
By Celeste Lodewyk The first seven women to step forward and support the Marlborough College Charitable Foundation have been affectionately named the “Magnificent Seven” by Foundation member John Davis. Helen Crampton, Bev Hodgetts, Rhonda Stewart, Sonia Tafilipepe, Nic Bicknell, Thelma Sowman and Ngaire Searle have stepped forward to help boost the quality of secondary education in Marlborough. The Marlborough College Charitable Foundation was launched in February with the aim of generating additional funding streams to assist Marlborough Boys’ College. Since its launch, the Foundation has received the support of fifty sponsors who have signed up to be Gold & Blue members. As a member, they each contribute $100 per month for 36 months which is then used to finance external activities, sports and the arts that otherwise lack funding. When asked what encouraged these seven women to join, Thelma, Bev and Nic offered their own reasons based on past and present connections to the college. “I had a son who attended MBC which I thought was a fantastic school, I just want to see that continue,” says Thelma. “It’s a great feeling knowing you are helping to support the boys to become great future leaders and businessmen,” says Bev. With her son currently attending the college, Nic is certain she will continue to show her support long into the future. “My son is here and is having the most amazing time. He has excellent teachers and everyone who I talk to always gives great feedback on the college, I am all for the Foundation and will support it long after my son has left,” she says. For more information about the Foundation refer to the website, www.mccf.org.nz
BNZ ‘closed for good’ Local BNZ staff will be out of the office and into the community today as part of the nationwide ‘Closed for Good’ initiative. Closed for Good sees BNZ stores and offices around New Zealand close their doors for one day, with staff instead helping community and not-for-profit groups with community projects. Marlborough staff will be lending their hand to projects including sprucing up the Blenheim SPCA, painting the Redwoodtown Plunket Rooms, cleaning the Brooklyn Croquet Club Rooms, and working at the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary. BNZ CEO Andrew Thorburn says the response from communities around New Zealand has been terrific. “So many community groups that do good in New Zealand need a helping hand more than ever,” he says. “This is what motivated us with Closed for Good.” Christchurch stores which are operational, and selected stores around Canterbury, will remain open. For information on BNZ banking services today, visit www.closedforgood.org.

From Page 1. However, Motor Trade Association Marlborough president Phil Brown says the recent hike is part of a cyclical trend and will level off when motorists stop topping up. “We’ve been there before a couple of years ago. Once the oil companies start to get resistance from the buy-
ers and people stop filling up, their excuse seems to change,” Mr Brown says. He does predict prices will rise from the current mark however, and motorists have no choice but to put up with it. “High petrol prices are going to be a fact of life and we’re going to have
to learn to live with that.” He says there is not a lot motorists can do to lower their fuel consumption, other than to ensure their car’s tyre pressure is correct and is running as efficiently as possible. “The one thing you can do really is use the car less. It’s not practical to keep filling your car up all the time.”
This Countdown supermarket grocery advertisement was brought into the Sun newspaper by an amused Lex Phillips. “When we read the branding, ‘Hen Made Eggs’, we nearly collapsed laughing. How else would be eggs be made?” If anyone else has a funny photo or advertisement they wish to share, call into the Sun Newspaper at 72 High Street.

2 for Placemakers Blenheim truck driver Ken Foote watches as an emergency shelter is prepared to be taken to Christchurch recently.
By Damian George Placemakers Blenheim began work on six more emergency shelters yesterday designed to provide accommodation for Cantabrians left homeless following last month’s earthquake. Placemakers Blenheim owner-manager Rodger Cullen says creating something practical was the best way to assist Christchurch in its recovery effort. “I couldn’t see the point in
sending a lot of people down they’re already stretched pretty majorly down there so you’re just going to get in the way and add to the pressure,” he says. “It was about coming up with something else that would help the people of Canterbury.” The company sent th ree prototypes of the shelters to Christchurch on February 25 to be checked by authorities, and were given the all-clear to continue manufacturing. A team of four builders were
working on the shelters yesterday, which are due to start being shipped to Christchurch in the next few days. The buildings are designed to accommodate four people, with a bunk bed at one end and a double bed at the other, and are fully functional with insulation, power and a heater. The shelters have been donated to a Placemakers store in Christchurch, who will decide along with authorities how to best employ them.
Engineer advises people to quake-proof homes By Damian George A Marlborough engineer says people should take measures to safeguard their house against an earthquake as the shock of the deadly quake which struck Christchurch two weeks ago continues to be felt. While many locals have been stocking up on survival supplies such as water and canned food, people should also be looking at ways to prevent injury in
their home or work building, certified engineer and Davidson Group partner Stephen Sheat says. “There’s not a lot you can do in a rush but, certainly, if people have got any doubts about their property, such as cracks, they should be seeking the opinion of a professional engineer.” He says household items such as hot water cylinders and header tanks should be
restrained, while other heavy furniture should also be held in place. “It’s useful to secure back book shelves and things to walls where possible,” he says. “The biggest thing is not to remove walls. It’s now possible to remove internal walls without building consent, but they shouldn’t be removed without consideration of the bracing systems in the house.”
State of national emergency extended Civil Defence Minister John Carter announced on Monday the national state of emergency would be extended for another week in the aftermath of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch two weeks ago. The state of national emergency was declared on February 23 and
first extended on March 1, and is expected to continue for several more weeks. “This is the first time in New Zealand’s history that a state of national emergency has been declared as a result of a civil defence emergency event,” he says. “The ongoing impact of the earthquake on 22 February,
and the continuing aftershocks, is of such an extent that a combined effort from across the nation will be required for some time. “This is a difficult time for the people in Canterbury and everyone involved in recovery work is pulling out all stops to ensure their safety and security.”

‘Something Random’ By Damian George ‘Something Random’ has now become something popular. The ‘over-30s’ social networking initiative set up by Blenheim woman Wendy Joy recently has attracted large numbers to its first two gatherings, and looks set to become even bigger. Held on the last Sunday of each month, up to 40 people have attended the evenings held at Fairweathers on Scott, with Ms Joy receiving very positive feedback. “People just seem to be enjoying getting out of the house - it’s something different to do and look forward to,” she says. “People are just mingling really well and aren’t leaving until 1am or 2am, so Wendy Joy’s social networking initiative for overit’s really taken off.” 30s has proved popular in Blenheim.
She says many people have swapped phone numbers, while some have ended up going on dates, though the latter is not the primary aim of the initiative. The idea came to Ms Joy after she saw the success of a similar venture in Nelson, and noticed the demand for an organised setting to facilitate social interaction among the age-group here. “It’s just a really good night. There’s lots of laughing, lots of talking. We’ve all got that thing in common that we’re single so we’re all connected to start with.” Roy Westley, 49, says the gatherings are “a marvellous idea” and encourages anyone looking for something to do to go along.

“I would definitely give it a whirl,” he says. “The first one was a little bit strange because everybody was new. But the second time we got some of the same people there - if you know half the people there already, you’ll have something in common with somebody straight away.” He says the evenings are a chance for him to have a drink and chat with like-minded people, ranging in age from 30 to mid-60s. “It’s just really neat to see a different group of people. “It’s well organised so we’re all together and we know we’re all there for the same sort of thing.” Interested in going along? Local digger driver aims for national title Champion excavator operator Greg Robinson can expect the unexpected when he represents the Nelson/Marlborough region in the National Excavator Operator Competition finals next week. Greg, of Blenheim who works for Mike Edridge Contracting in Rai Valley, will be taking on 11 other regional champions for the title of New Zealand’s number one multi-skilled operator at the event at the Field Days in Feilding, Manawatu between March 17 and 19. The competition, organised by the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation, is renowned for its rigorous challenges and surprise elements with many seasoned competitors returning year after year in a bid to win the title. Greg, who will be competing in the final for the first time, has been operating excavators for over six years and says he’s learnt everything he knows from dad Steve who he works with. “I’ve heard the final is very competitive but I’m aiming to get out there, do my best and enjoy myself,” said Greg. “Operating an excavator is a very skilled job, particularly given the wide range of tasks you need to be able to tackle but I really enjoy it. Contestants will face a wide range of challenges to test their operating skills. These range from planning and completing a construction job to using the12-tonne Hitachi machines for delicate tasks such as pouring a cup of tea or popping the cork from a champagne bottle.

Dreams realised at wine awards By Damian George Marlborough wine-maker Steve Pellett credits a “minimum intervention” approach as the reason behind his and his wife Bridget’s success at the Sydney International Wine Competiton recently. The pair claimed the ‘Best Sauvignon Blanc’ award at a banquet dinner at the end of last month, for their Stanley Estates Intrepid Sauvignon Blanc 2010. In the only prestigious competition to judge wines alongside food, ‘Intrepid’ was matched against a dish of Goat Cheese and Spinach Ravioli, and was deemed the worthiest accompaniment by the panel of six judges. “It’s fantastic for us - it’s what we’ve been striving towards with everything we do,” Steve says. Originally from the UK, Steve and Bridget emigrated to New Zealand in 2003 with the aim of planting a vineyard and the dream of producing their own wine. Steve says the award-winning Sauvignon Blanc is a result of a close working relationship between himself, viticulturalist Jeremy Hyland, and winemaker Jules Taylor. “For us, it’s about getting it right in the vineyard. We put a lot of time and effort into getting that right,” he says. “Then we try to let the fruit express itself as best we can - it’s a minimum intervention approach.” Of the thousands of wines entered in the competition, only 19 were awarded a Blue-Gold Medal for being both a top-class wine and complementing food well. As well as winning the overall Sauvignon Blanc prize, the Stanley Estates wine was also voted one of the top 100 wines in the competition. One judge surmised it had “a lovely finesse and minerality”, while another critiqued it as “medium to full-bodied, but with some grace”. Marlborough wines picked up a total of five trophies at the competition, along with dozens of Blue-Gold Medals, and made up more than a quarter of the top 100 wines.

A day in the life of a mental health field worker Next week is the Supporting Families Awareness Week (March 12-19) and to help explain the importance of supporting families with a relative or friend experiencing mental illness, SF Marlborough field worker Lyn Caughey talks to Celeste Lodewyk. Walking into the office of SF Marlborough I am met with a wall of laughter which floods through the corridor and reaches the people standing outside. It is said that first impressions last and I can honestly say that Lyn’s smiling face peering around the corner will be an image hard to forget. It is lunchtime, the phones are ringing, the traffic is busy outside and yet amidst the midday chaos, Lyn happily drops what she is doing to sit down for a chat. Lyn has been working for SF Marlborough as a field worker since March 2009 after graduating from Massey University with a BA in Psychology. Working with families and individuals has long been a passion of Lyn’s which has seen her work in many fields, including Women’s Refuge in Nelson. “Family support is a field I have always wanted to work in right from school age, so I was thrilled to be offered the field worker position with SF Marlborough. “I honestly could not name anything else I would rather be doing,” she smiles. A typical day for Lyn involves a 40m inute dr ive from her Marlborough Sounds home to arrive at the office early. This extra time she allows to respond to emails, plan her day and take care of paperwork. After 10am it soon becomes “unpredictable” as to how busy Lyn and her co-workers can be.
Lyn Caughey (front) pictured with co-workers Cheryl Thompson and Hiria Moanaroa.
“There is no way to predict your day, even if you have planned it out,” she laughs. “But that is the beauty of SF Marlborough, our doors are always open and we welcome anyone to drop in.” Lyn’s diary is marked with family visits and meetings with support groups where she might visit the family home or meet out for a coffee. “These visits are to check if
Ashwood Park RETIREMENT VILL AGE
the family’s plan or situation has changed and to make sure they are not struggling with any issues. “My visits also serve to let families know that we are always there for them with a friendly face and listening ear. This is really important as people’s circumstances regularly change; take the Christchurch earthquake for example. “This affected a lot of locals as well as Christchurch families that have moved to Marlborough, so
we are actively working with them to help set up support networks,” she says. One of the most rewarding aspects of Lyn’s role is her connection to the community. “We are regularly making links with other community organisations to see how we can work together and make effective use of our time. “The people I meet and the friendships forged make me feel
very connected to the community in a positive way. “It keeps me passionate about my role and makes it so rewarding,” she smiles. At the end of her day, Lyn meets back up with her co-workers to reflect on their work and the satisfying feeling in knowing they have contributed toward helping families cope with the day to day struggle of living with mental illness.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What do you think of the predicted March 30 earthquake - and would you be prepared?

I think its quite likley. We just have to be prepared for it. I am starting to get very prepared.
Ken Ring (The Moon Man) is frightening school children. He shouldnt be on T.V. if he’s going to talk about predections. It’s irresponsible. Yes, we are starting to prepare.
How can you predict an earthquake? It’s rubbish. And as for being prepared, we have everything that we would need.
You can go through life worrying about these things. If it happens, it happens. I am prepared.
If it happens it happens, if it doesn’t then that’s great! We can’t stop these things. As for predicting, I think it can be done to some degree. But I am not prepared at all.
You just have to be really prepared. If it does hit it will be a disaster. I don’t think it will be Marlborough.

Dear Ed, I went fishing while on holiday in Picton this week. I was not sure what to expect after reading reports in the past from minister Jim Anderton and the Ministry of Fisheries that there was a need to place a ban on blue cod fishing in the Marlborough Sounds to “salvage the badly depleted stock of blue cod”. We fished the inner sounds area for approximately 1.5 hours. As soon as we had we dropped our lines, the fish started biting. We caught 27 blue cod with several double hook ups. They varied in size from 28cm to 46cm. Being
in a ‘no keep zone’, we had to put them all back. A few swam away okay, most drifted away lifelessly, others were eaten by a school of waiting shags. I cannot believe that, come April Fools’ Day, we would only be allowed to keep three of the blue cod we caught. Why was the ban ever imposed? I am going home very concerned at what the long term effects of the April Fools’ regulations will have on fish stocks in the Marlborough Sounds. Come November, I am sure this will have an influence on my vote. David Wilson, Christchurch.
Lack of ‘Bible Answers’ Dear Editor, I must say I was disappointed with Jeff William’s Bible ‘Answer’ dealing with the Christchurch earthquake (March 2). The Bible is a book that offers real comfort, and yet I found no such comfort in any of his words. He said (and I quote) “the purpose of such disasters is to bring unbelievers face to face with their mortality and their need for a Saviour” (unquote). Earthquakes, wars, famines, and disease—these are some of the things that Jesus foretold would mark “the conclusion of the system of things” in which we now live. But the scriptures are clear that God is NOT responsible for natural disasters, or any wicked acts. James 1:13 states: “When under trial, let no one say: ‘I am being tried
by God.’ For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone.” Ecclesiastes 9:11 states: “Time and unforeseen occurrence befall us all”. Note it says ‘us all’. That would include believers and non-believers. Revelation 21:4 gives a fantastic promise by God of things to come in the near future when he will act on behalf of mankind: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” God has promised to un-do the hurt and pain that this world has brought on people. And soon. They are real Bible answers. And Bible comfort. C. H. Ristian.
Price increases Dear Editor, I am normally not one to complain but after seeing regular increases in the price of foods I am left wondering if the supermarkets are being “honest” with customers about what is causing these rises. For example, a loaf of Homebrand bread was priced $1.59 and after the GST increase last year it went to just
under $1.65. Now it can be found anywhere around $1.89 or more. This may not seem a lot to some people but when these increases are applied to a range of food items, we as customers are watching our food budgets being eaten away by these mysterious price rises. Does anyone else feel the same? Watchful shopper.

Police and Fire Safety carry out a scene investigation after a suspicious fire in Mowat Street, Blenheim, last Wednesday morning. Neighbours were woken by broken glass during a “suspicious” house fire in Mowat Street, Blenheim, early last Wednesday morning. Blenheim Fire Service and police were called to the scene at approximately 12.35am. The house was extensively damaged and police and Fire Safety were carrying out an investigation on Wednesday morning to determine the cause of the fire. Police say there have been reports from neighbours of a vehicle in the area just prior to the fire being discovered, and are asking anyone who may have information to contact them. The occupants of the house had been away since the weekend, a neighbour says, and were not home at the time of the fire.

Renwick School Celebrates
150 years
The Sun
Honouring our past, present and future Renwick School has a very rich and proud heritage dating back to its establishment in 1861. This year, teachers, past and present students, their families and friends will come together to celebrate a historic moment – the school’s 150th Jubilee. The Jubilee will commence on Friday, October 28 2011 with celebrations running through to Sunday, October 30. In the lead up to the Jubilee, current headmaster Simon Heath reflects on the school’s recent achievements, developments and its exciting plans for the future.
“During the past 18 months the school has experienced a lot of development which has seen a number of classrooms and facilities brought up to date in terms of modern learning environments. “Of the school’s 21 classrooms, nine are either brand new or completely refurbished. In addition we are really excited about our fantastic new library, teacher resource area and theatre complex which have been really well received by pupils, teachers and families,” he says. A further four new classrooms will be opened later this year.

Aside from its present developments, Renwick School has recently invested a significant amount of money in Information Technology, enabling senior classes access to the latest in computer technology. The growth within the school has also increased considerably over the past 12months with the student role count now sitting at 453, nearly 80 more than last year. “There are lots of reasons for this; for one, families who once travelled to Blenheim for their children’s schooling are now coming here. Many of them have commented they like the fact that the school is moving ahead and are im-

pressed with the vast number of opportunities available to students. “In addition we have amazing support from the Renwick community, we have a great bunch of kids here, tremendous staff and a Board of Trustees which is very forward thinking,” he says. With much more development yet to come, Renwick School can only add to its fine tradition of providing excellent quality teaching and facilities for year one to eight students. “These are exciting times for Renwick School so we hope you can join us in celebrating our 150th Jubilee.”

Founding of Renwick School
s, 1939. Renwick School pupil
Rev. Thomas Nicholson, who was also the first minister to the Wairau arrived in Renwick around 1857. After arriving in Renwick around 1857, Rev Thomas Nicholson of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland set about the task of education for the local children. In 1860 he began to urge the local community to recognise the urgent need of education in the rising generation to better equip them for their futures. At the time the government had money for education, but while finances were being arranged, Rev Nicholson went ahead providing his school lessons in the Pioneers Presbyterian Church, then situated in the old cemetery grounds in Havelock Street. Late in December that year, Mr William Moore arrived from Nelson to take on the role as the newly selected schoolmaster. The following were among those who were recorded attending the first day of school. James Brydon and his three sisters, Adam and Tom Jackson and their three sisters, Roddie McIvor, William Maxted and his sister. Without government funding, the children of this early school were obliged to pay for their own schooling. The first child in a family paid one shilling, the second sixpence and the third threepence. In 1861 the school was said to have made great progress considering it had only been in existence nine months. The attendance at that time consisted of 10 boys and six girls who were taught reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar and geography.
School memorabilia In support of the Renwick School 150th Jubilee, the Renwick Museum and Library will be open on Friday, October 28 to display items from the school’s past, including some special photographic displays. A specialty of the museum is family histories and records, its extensive collection of photographs
William Moore was Renwick’s first appointed school teacher. Rev Thomas Nicholson had voluntary taught for a few months before William took over. The school was held in the Presbyterian Church, the present Sunday School.
Following successful reports and inspections made by members of the Provincial Government in 1862, members of the school committee were encouraged to build a new school house. This school was then built on the site of the present schoolhouse by W. Mills and Sons costing 200 pounds.

Regent School of Motoring Restoring confidence and teaching youth driving skills is something Mike McCann enjoys most about his role as driving instructor with Regent School of Motoring. Mike recently purchased the business two months ago after deciding on a lifestyle change. “I am a chef by trade and have travelled the world, even cooking for the rich and famous but after many years in the industry I hung up my chef hat and looked for a business opportunity closer to home,” he says. Originally from Christchurch, Mike says the decision to settle down in Marlborough was due to

the climate, “fabulous” wine and friendly community. His decision to purchase Regent School of Motoring was based on his enjoyment of driving and desire to pass on the same enthusiasm to others. “It’s really fun teaching young people and seeing the excitement in their faces when learning to drive. “I also get a lot of satisfaction when teaching elderly who still hold their license but want to gain more confidence, this is great to be part of,” he says. Regent School of Motoring offers driving instruction covering all ages and license grades.

As vineyard manager for his family block, Brad Crighton and owner of BNC Viticulture Contracting Ltd he understands the importance of ensuring crop protection and care. “We live and breathe grapes and understand the pressures facing all vineyard managers,” he says. This is how BNC was born, through the need to completely control the quality of tractor work being done on the family block at Crighton Estate. Alongside his wife, Nadia Crighton, BNC Viticulture Contracting has slowly grown to become a contracting unit with a

trustworthy reputation. Today BNC Viticulture Contracting helps other vineyard managers ensure a high standard of quality, while also being sensitive to budget constrains many vineyards and wineries are experiencing. “We understand from the grower’s point of view, the importance of service in the contracting arena, and how important personal relationships are”. BNC is also proud to keep informed with new technologies that can offer the best environmental care for fellow growers. The addition of the new recyclable foliage sprayer is one way BNC is continuing to protect the environment. “This not only reduces the chemicals needed to keep your crop in good growing condition, it also reduces chemical drift and wastage.”

Mills Painter and Decorator first began in Blenheim after John completed his training to become trade certified. From starting out as a keen young apprentice, John soon developed a passion for the industry and knew instantly he wanted to branch out on his own.
“I have enjoyed being a painter and decorator and what I like most is the different people I meet everyday and the many places my work has taken me,” he says. John not only specialises in the painting and decorating of homes and commercial buildings, but he also offers a professional spray painting service for applications such as roofs. “Anything interior and exterior I provide a professional service and

Topp line-up for Mussel Festival Prepare to fire up your taste buds as the 2011 Havelock Mussel Festival shapes up to be another anticipated event set to kick off next Saturday. The annual celebration of this tasty seafood in the Greenshell Mussel capital of the world is looking to be yet another successful year, according to Katrina Lange, chief executive of Marlborough 4 Fun. “Sales are going really well and we have a number of new and interesting stalls this year as well an exciting entertainment line-up. “We have the Topp Twins back again; they always pull a good crowd as well as the Beat Girls who do a fantastic show. Be sure to come along and enjoy this year’s festival, we are looking forward
to a great event,” she says. With a maximum crowd capacity of 7,000 ticket sales are still going strong with organisers predicting this year’s event close to being a sell out. “We do encourage people to purchase their tickets in advance as gate sales will be $5 more,” she says. Ticket sales for the festival usually range around 6000. Regal Salmon has come onboard to sponsor the cooking marquee which will see local chef Chris Fortune carry out cooking demonstrations with a group of Marlborough students. This will be followed by the guest appearance of Season One Masterchef winner Brett McGregor. Taking place on Havelock Domain
between 10am – 6pm there will be lots of food, wine and beer stalls as well as jewellery, craft and industry stall displays open to the public. For the kids, the NIWA Kidzone returns for this year’s event bigger and better with loads of free attractions for young children. Entertaining the crowd is an exciting line-up of entertainers including Paul Madsen – Dukes ‘N Generals. This is no ordinary country show, upbeat, modern and country rock at its finest. Also featuring will be one of Blenheim’s favourite cover bands, Remastered. There will be much to see, taste and experience at the 2011 Havelock Mussel Festival – be sure that you don’t miss out on a great day with the whole family.

Locals chip in for Christchurch By Damian George A local organisation with a personal link to quake-torn Christchurch has put together care packs and raised more than $400 for people in the city still without power and water. Marie Schroder, treasurer of Special Needs Children Marlborough, says patrons who donated money and goods through their weekly housie night were to decide whether the $406 raised would go straight to Red Cross, or towards more items for care packs. Marie’s son Matt, who attended Ch r istchurch’s Halswell Residential College
last year, was in the city when the September earthquake hit last year, and has friends from the college affected by the February 22 quake. “What we’ve done is we asked for donations to the victims of the earthquake and the housie patrons contributed to donations of $203,” Marie says. “And we’re going to match the donations dollar for dollar.” The care packs include items such as disposable razors, deoderants, sanitary packs, and toothbrushes, as well things like soft toys and playing cards for children. “Kids are quite resilient, but
some of them have lost quite a lot,” she says. “Power is on and off so there’s things in the packs which kids can play with which don’t rely on power. This belongs to them - it’s their little pack.” Marie says she had initially hoped the organisation could compile 500 packs, but a target of 200 was more realistic. Anybody who brings items along for the care packs tomorrow night will go into the draw to win a $260 quilted bed spread, she says. Marie and husband Rex will be driving to Christchurch on Friday afternoon and will distribute the packs on Saturday.

The Dillons Point Community Spinners knitting group are appealing for more wool so they can continue to send clothing to AIDS sufferers in Africa. The group of about ten meet weekly to knit hat and singlet sets for new-born babies without any clothing. In the worst cases, babies with AIDS are wrapped in newspaper and have become known as “fish ‘n’ chip babies”. The knitting group have so far contributed 329 singlets and 260 hats to the cause, and on Thursday were preparing to send another six dozen sets. Dillons Point Community Spinners member Joy Randall says the club is in desperate need of more wool of any type to keep the operation going, and is also welcoming any new members. If you would like to help, contact Ada Tuckerman on 578 4549.

Shared lunch a treat for students Blenheim School students were treated to a shared lunch last week when the Life Education Trust mobile classroom visited. Highlighting the Trust’s healthy eating message, students enjoyed a selection of fruit, sandwiches and Just Juice drinks. During the lunch a surprise appearance from Harold the Giraffe delighted students who scrambled for a photo with their tall and furry friend. Pictured (far right) with Harold the Giraffe are Brittney Johnson, Folau Lepolo and Brandon Jewun.

Do you have a Bible question for Jeff? Email us your question at pastor@mbbc.org.nz or post it to us. Full confidentiality is assured at all times.
Q – “Does the Bible have anything relevant to say about all of the earthquakes happening lately?” A – Yes! This was a question that we dealt with recently in a men’s prayer meeting at MBBC. We found that there are a surprising number of other important earthquake facts in scripture. In Romans 1:1620 we are told that the gospel is the power of God and reveals the righteousness of God. This is immediately followed by the truth that natural disasters in the creation around us reveal the wrath of God “against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.” Any nation that thumbs its collective nose at God and rejects the positive manifestation of his power (the gospel or good news of salvation in Christ) should expect to experience the negative manifestation of his power. A nation that glorifies immorality, murders its unborn, tolerates the abomination of sodomite relationships and revels in its atheism should expect a reaction from its Holy Creator. Matthew 27:54 records an earthquake at the crucifixion of Jesus: “Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” Earthquakes allowed by a Holy God will cause men to fear for their lives greatly and force them to confront the fact that Jesus truly is the Son of God. Acts 16:25-31 records an earthquake in the Greek city of Philippi that caused a man to confront his own mortality and the peril that lay before him of an eternity in hell without salvation. This man, with great fear, “came trembling..and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” A good earthquake may destroy your earthly possessions, but if you listen to what God is trying to say it could save your soul! What else do we know? Revelation 16:17-19 warn us that far, far, far worse earthquakes are yet to come: “...and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell...” If you hope the worst is over, you will be sorely disappointed. Every earthquake has a right response and a wrong response. Rev 11:13 says, “And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.” New Zealand is at a crossroads – we can as a nation give God the glory or we can soldier on in our pride and atheistic rebellion and suffer the consequences. You can chalk it all up as bad luck and take your chances or you can be truly wise and choose to listen to your Creator and embrace Jesus as the Son of God that can save your soul!

Trike-athon raises over $1200
Ireland carrying the flag for associate teams

renovations. Children and in some cases their parents took part in an obstacle course, trike-athon on bikes and scooters before stopping to enjoy
that plan, but it seems a shame that it takes such a breath-taking effort to make people sit up and take notice. Rather, Ireland’s consistent performances over the last couple of years – in which they have beaten Bangladesh and been competitive against sides such as England and Australia - should justify their inclusion in this tournament, and tournaments to follow. The problem for Ireland is the poor performances of the other associate teams in this tournament, who have not fared as well and been on the end of some embarrassing defeats. It is understandable organisers want to eliminate one-sided matches – we all do. But surely the

face painting, crazy hair, a chocolate draw and sausage sizzle. To date more than $1200 has been raised but more is yet to be counted.
A fantastic days racing was had by all who turned up for the Top of the South Vintage Motocross Club open day on February 27. The event was hosted at the Delany’s farm near Havelock and was well supported by strong
numbers, including a mix of modern bikes on the day. The track held together well despite misty rain threatening to spoil the surface, although it proved useful by keeping the dust down, organisers say. Top of the South VMX Club website manager Brett Burns said
best way of achieving Damian George t h i s , while still nurturing the development of these teams, is to expose them to more international cricket between World Cups, and reduce the number of teams from 14 to 12. As it stands, the associate teams are part of a vicious cycle - apart from the odd match here and there, they only get the opportunity to play test-playing nations every four years, then criticised for not being up to scratch. Ireland are an example of a team on the rise. This is the time to embrace them; not banish them into the cricketing wilderness.
he had hoped the event would attract more local riders. “We are pleased with the numbers. Fun was the aim of the day and I think we achieved that no problems,” he said. For more information on the VMX Club, visit www.sportsground.co.nz/ totsvmx
LEARN HOW TO BE A BETTER RIDER
RIDER TRAINING
Register for a motorbike or scooter training course and learn some helpful tips to stay safe on your bike.
Riding a motorbike or scooter carries a lot more risk than sitting behind the wheel of a car. Calculated on the basis of kilometres travelled, motorcyclists are 20 times more likely than car drivers to be involved in a fatal crash or seriously injured in a crash. The number of motorbikes on the road is increasing and so are the fatal crashes involving motorcyclists. If you are a motor cyclist there are steps you can take to reduce the risks to your own safety. One of those is to learn to become a skilled rider with good bike handling skill that can help you evade other drivers’ mistakes. Remember that, if you are the bike rider, regardless of who causes the crash, you are the one who will be hitting the tarmac!

Your week in sport
Without doubt the standout moment in the Cricket World Cup to date is little-known Irishman Kevin O’Brien’s match-winning century against England. His whirlwind innings – the fastest century in World Cup history – not only propelled the non-test-playing nation to victory, but also sent a timely reminder to World Cup organisers that there is a place for cricket’s second-tier teams on the sport’s biggest stage, just not so many. It is widely tipped the next World Cup will be stripped back to ten teams, meaning teams like Ireland face the prospect of not being included. Hopefully, O’Brien’s innings will have at least have thrown a spanner in the works of

Once dog tucker, now a winner
Three times ex-trotter horse “Leroy Brown” was destined for the butcher’s knife, but a chance meeting with local woman Vivien Wadsworth gave him another chance at proving his worth. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.
By Celeste Lodewyk Ex-trotter and standardbred horse “Leroy Brown” was saved from the butcher’s knife and purchased by owner Vivien Wadsworth. Their story is one of fate and second chances shaped by the bond of companionship. Five years ago Vivien was driving home from work she hit a horse which had escaped from its paddock, killing it and sustaining minor injuries herself. Feeling terrible and in need of some “horse therapy” Vivien visited her cousin who owned several horses. She expected to be handed a brush and shovel but instead she was placed straight onto a horse. This brought back memories of riding 30-years ago and gave Vivien the encouragement she needed to get back into handling horses. In a twist of fate, Vivien’s cousin had not long rescued a horse from being shot for dog food. This horse named Leroy Brown was an ex-trotter, 16
hands standardbred in less than desirable condition, but he still managed to win the heart of Vivien. “When I saw him I thought he was the ugliest horse I had ever seen. He wasn’t in the best condition and his previous three owners had all planned to have him shot. “At that stage he was all I could afford but after getting to know him I knew there was something special about him. It was a case of being fourth time lucky for Leroy Brown,” she smiles. Being a “green” rider herself, Vivien admits they had many ups and downs while getting used to each other, but in the end the duo fought their way through their differences. “A lot of people thought I had made the wrong decision getting Leroy Brown but after treating him in a firm but gentle manner he responded well and now we’re good mates. He can still be a bit cautious but he is coming through it,” she says.
As time went on and after plenty of grazing and regular riding, Leroy Brown regained his condition and fitness level and has gone on to win close to 30 ribbons for endurance and trail riding. Together they have taken part in social farmland rides with the Blenheim Riding Club and successfully competed within the Marlborough Endurance and Trail Riding Club. “Whenever we are successful at an event, I joke that it was my dog-tucker that won. “At the end of the day he a real dude and makes a great team mate. I would like to see other people give standardbreds a chance because you never know what they can achieve,” she says. Now at 10-years of age, Leroy Brown is on his way to receiving his 300km sash. And Vivien’s future plans… “I’m going to keep riding him as long as he is healthy and well and hope that he has 10 more happy years,” she says.
