School children’s dental clinics centralised By Damian George Local dental therapists will officially shift into Blenheim’s new oral health clinic next week as they prepare to open the facility to patients in mid-June. The new amenity, which will be known as the Marlborough Community Oral Health

Service Clinic, will see all Marlborough-based children’s therapists stationed at the one centre rather than at individual schools throughout the region. The change is part of a Ministry of Health initiative to modernise the oral health service, which began in 2006.

NMDHB project manager for child and adolescent oral health Kaye Hannagan says the new service will change the way children here receive dental care. “It’s a holistic education and prevention programme. It’s not just about treatment,” she says. Continued Page 3.

By Celeste Lodewyk The Sun visited the new Burger King Blenheim restaurant on Monday night to see how the staff were settling into their new surroundings before opening day today. As we arrived, the restaurant’s first “practise” customer emerged clutching his favourite burger, the BK Spicy Chicken Tender Crisp. “The restaurant looks fantastic

and the staff were great. As for the burger… delicious,” he grins. Staff have been running through practise sessions throughout the past two days learning everything from food preparation through to customer service procedures. Burger King operations manager John Hunter walked The Sun through the new restaurant, pointing out the newly-designed décor. “We have kept aspects of the

original Burger King style, but have brought the décor up to date. “We have had heaps of positive comments and are looking forward to open day,” he says. Last night’s ‘Blenheim family and friends night’ was the restaurant’s final practice run before its opening. John says he hopes the restaurant will be up-and-running and open to the public tonight.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will receive an increase in funding towards its hospital and community health services for the 2011/12 financial year, it was announced in the government’s 2011 budget. NMDHB general manager of corporate services Nick Lanigan says details of how the board will invest the funding increase will be included in the DHB’ 2011/12 Annual Plan. “The DHB is grateful for this increase in funding for the 2011/12 year. However, the DHB will still need to maintain tight control over expenditure,” he says. “The DHB’s Rutherford Initiative continues to look at ways of working smarter to make sure that we get the best value for every health dollar we spend.” The DHB’s Annual Plan will be tabled in Parliament and may be available in July, a spokesperson says. Last year, the DHB received $370m from the Ministry of Health to provide health services for 135,000 people in Nelson and Marlborough.

Shellfish still off menu The ban on gathering shellfish from Queen Charlotte Sound and Tory Channel has again been extended due to contamination, the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service announced on Monday. Medical officer of health Dr Ed Kiddle says shellfish harvested from the area are also dangerous to eat, due to the presence of the Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning [PSP] toxin. Dr Kiddle says authorities need to wait until the shellfish are free of the toxins before the areas can be re-opened for harvesting. He says it is difficult to predict how long this will take, but further testing will be carried out to monitor the situation. He reminds people that eating even small amounts of fish from the infected areas could result in severe illness. This includes kina, mussels, pipi, tuatua, oysters, cockles and scallops harvested since March 25. For more information, contact the On Call Health Protection Officer in Blenheim on 520 9999.

New oral health clinic set to open Continued from Page 1. “We’re asking parents to come along with their children [to the appointments]; we’ll be treating zero to two-and-a-half-year-olds, which we haven’t done before. “The plan is to get the education in early and to reduce the disease rate.” The clinic, one of five in the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough region, will be situated at Innes House - formerly the boarding establishment for both Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges - and will be owned entirely by the DHB. The other clinics are located in Motueka, Richmond and Stoke, and Nelson. Mrs Hannagan says the change has created a number of new employment opportunities [currently being advertised] as the board looks to extend its education programme into pre-schools and other ‘under-five’ community groups. She says staff will spend two to three weeks undergoing training and familiarising themselves with the clinic’s brand new equipment, during which time regular services will be put on hold. “For children who need urgent dental care, we will still provide that,” she says. “That will probably be at the new clinic, but we’ll deal with that on a case-by-case basis.” Mrs Hannagan says the board has made a considerable effort to ensure the transition is an easy one for both children and parents. “I would hope that it’s quite smooth – we have put out as much information as we can to everybody that’s involved.” The clinic will be formally opened on June 1, with Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne to be present at the celebrations.

GPS units proving their worth in Blenheim, for example, they can just programme the address into them and they’re extremely helpful. “It certainly makes getting to those areas a bit quicker and more efficient.” He says streets in Picton can be particularly troublesome, as several are broken by hills which run through them. “Devon Street and Scotland Street are two, in particular, which are now easier to navigate,” he says. “There can be five different breaks sometimes (on those streets). Depending on where you’re going will depend on how you approach the street.” Mr McCaw says St John have two staff members who are relatively new to the Blenheim area, which has proven how valuable the units are.

They had also proved their worth when ambulances from the region went to Christchurch following the now-infamous February 22 earthquake, he said. “In the past, people had been using their own GPSs; now they don’t need to do that.” Mr McCaw says the new devices can help to save two to three minutes when attending a callout. “It could be critical time if someone’s having breathing difficulties or not breathing properly,” he says. “It’s helpful to them, and to having a more beneficial outcome. If you can get to the scene quicker or more efficiently, it’s all good for everyone.” The units are worth about $300 each.

By Damian George The new GPS units in Nelson and Marlborough ambulances have helped save crucial minutes on several occasions since being installed recently, St John rural support officer Lindsay McCaw says. The Navman GPS units, which ambulance officers have used to map out the quickest route to a destination, were employed in November last year following a donation by the Freemasons. In addition to providing street directions, the devices can also identify time delays including congested roads, roadworks and traffic flow. Mr McCaw says the new equipment has been especially beneficial for out-of-town crews using the vehicles in Marlborough. “When we have Nelson crews

Carpark complex nears completion By Damian George Blenheim’s new three-storey Alfred Street Carpark building is expected to be completed on June 20, Marlborough District Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says. Mr Lyall says the finishing touches are currently being put on the complex, including painting, commissioning and testing. He says the scheduled completion date is “a very good result”

considering the impact of two major earthquakes in Christchurch during construction, which had hampered the delivery of some building materials. The automated pay-as-you-leave parking system is scheduled to be fitted-out in mid-July with installation set to be completed by August 1. Motorists will be able to park in the building for free until that date, he says.

Mr Lyall says vehicles in the carpark will be protected not only by the automated parking system, but also by CCTV cameras and proximity-controlled lighting. The new $4.5 million building will have 340 parking spaces, 206 more than the original car park area, and includes rooftop parking. It is expected to help relieve parking congestion which has frustrated motorists in some areas.

Kids dig in at school By Damian George Dozens of local children and volunteers dug in at Rapaura School on the weekend as what was a barren wasteland was replaced with a 400-square-metre native forest. The planting of the garden, which will help to attract local native birds and provide them with the means to survive, was made possible after Rapaura School was awarded with a ‘Treemendous School Makeover’ earlier this year. It was one of four schools in New Zealand to be awarded the makeover, which is a joint initiative of Project Crimson and the Mazda Foundation. Rapaura School principal Helen Williams says the new addition will help to educate students on New Zealand’s native birdlife and how it can be preserved.

“It’s an ongoing learning environment for generations to come,” she says. “But, more than that, I want these kids to be taking that philosophy back home and into their lives and just appreciating what we have.” More than 450 trees and shrubs were planted in just over two hours on Saturday morning, something which did not cease to amaze one of the programmes judges and television celebrity Ruud Kleinpaste. “There’s shelter, space and lots of people with a willingness to come and work and, in a day, we’ve got a whole new forest,” he says. “We have created for the future a forest where birds can eat and live, insects can eat and live, lizards can live in it too - it’s the world’s fastest forest!”

Local school students gather round ‘The Bugman’ Ruud Kleinpaste during Rapaura School’s ‘Treemendous School Makeover’ on Saturday.

As a judge, Ruud, also known as ‘The Bugman’, was impressed by the eagerness of Rapaura School in its application. “I love the enthusiasm of wanting to do something with their environment,” he says.

“The area here [in Marlborough] might be good in terms of winegrowing, but it’s mono-cultural.” Rapaura School student Charlie Taylor, 9, was one of the many children lending a hand on Saturday, and the significance of the

event was not lost on him. “In a few years time, there will be lots of native creatures here, Like Tuis and Bellbirds,” he says. This is the fourth year the makeovers have been awarded.

The Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service [PHS] says it is hopeful no new cases of legionella infection will emerge in the region following the identification of five more possible cases recently. The latest cases brought the total number of infections to eight suspected and three confirmed, after three people were found to have been infected earlier in the year. All of the infections involve people working at the Riverlands industrial estate. Medical officer of health Dr Ed Kiddle says he is confident the PHS is on top of the situation at this stage. “The reassuring thing is that clinicians in Marlborough have been alert to the possibility of legionella in the community since Easter and have had no new confirmed cases,” he says. “We are hopeful that we won’t see any new cases.” Dr Kiddle says staff are working with the Marlborough District Council and the Department of Labour [DoL] to identify the source of the infection. That involved collecting water samples from all cooling towers in Blenheim, as they may have been affected with legionella, he says. The first results were expected yesterday. Towers had been shock dosed with chemicals to cover any risk if they had been contaminated. He says staff had also taken samples from compost piles in the area to further investigate possible sources for legionella. “As we may never be able to identify the source of the infection it is important that people are aware of the risk factors for [the disease] Legionellosis. “These are inhaling dust from compost and potting mix or being exposed to water spray coming from a contaminated source. “People most at risk of severe disease are those over 50 years of age, smokers, and anyone with immune suppression,” he says.

Shave off pays off By Celeste Lodewyk Last month Blenheim couple Scott Palatchie and Leanne Budny decided to organise a Shave Off fundraising auction in the hope of raising $1000 for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation of New Zealand. The decision was a last minute one, but after counting the last of their auction amounts last week they were thrilled to find they had raised $3000. “Our goal was to get around $1000 but we managed to triple that,” Leanne says. “The crazy thing is that the auction was only organised in four days so the fact that we were able to raise $3000 is mind blowing,” says Scott. There were 26 auctions at ALL SMILES: Leanne Budny checks out fiance Scott Palatchie’s the event which were donated hair growth after he shaved it all off in support of the Leukaemia by Blenheim and Picton busiand Blood Foundation of New Zealand in April. nesses.

Some of the major auctions included a Hunting and Fishing jacket, a cruise for two from Beachcomber and accommodation at the Beachcomber Inn for two people. The event was sponsored by Morgan Road Nursery which donated $1000 and was supported by Bounce With Us who donated the use of a bouncy castle for the children. “We can’t thank local businesses enough for their support, and the public for coming along and supporting the 20 people who shaved their heads,” Leanne says. The couple have already begun planning for next year’s Shave Off fundraiser. “It will be bigger and better with a lot more time for planning,” they laugh.

Local Blenheim Toyota support brake specials ‘overrear brake shoes whelming’ By Damian George A local pharmacy says the recent public support shown for one of its employees battling a serious illness in Wellington Hospital has been “mind-blowing”. Maree Forbes, retail manager at Unichem Redwoodtown Pharmacy, has been helping to organise a garage sale to raise funds for the family of 24-year- Lisa Taua’lupe old Lisa Taua’lupe, who was admitted to hospital in February. Maree says the response since an article was published in The Sun two weeks ago advising of the sale has been overwhelming. “We have got everything from furniture, to appliances, pharmacy goods, toys, bedding, and a little bit of clothing,” she says. “There’s people that have donated mahogany dressing tables - if they’d chosen to sell them, they could probably have got $300-$400 but they’ve chosen to donate them to Lisa’s plight, which is really heart warming. It’s mind-blowing.” Maree says Lisa has now been moved from an intensive care unit to a high-dependency ward and is progressing well, but faces a long road towards full health. She does not want to name the illness Lisa is suffering from. “The ongoing recovery is going to take many months and the support that everyone has given, what everyone has done, will go an incredibly long way in helping towards her rehabilitation.” The other principle organiser of the fundraiser is Denise Manning, from Redwood Town Doctors, Maree says. The garage sale will be held this Saturday at the Redwood Town Saturday market.

Local talent gears Brides we want you! up for concert By Damian George Some of Blenheim’s best musical talent will be on show when the St Andrew’s Church Concert takes place on Sunday. The annual concert brings together both top junior and senior musicians, and is traditionally a very popular event, co-organiser Barry Stringer says. “Its always been extremely successful. We’ve always filled the church and even turned people away sometimes.” Barry says the concert gives a chance for Blenheim’s best junior musicians to mix with their senior counterparts in a live performance. Youngsters to take to stage

The 2011 Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year show is creeping closer by the day, but it is not too late for brides to get their entries in, says organiser Carol Taylor. To date Carol has received 13 entries, but with the clock ticking brides are running out of time. “If the success of previous shows is anything to go by, you won’t want to miss out ladies,” she says. “And more importantly if you get your entry in within the next week, your photo along with other contestants will appear in the Sun’s feature on June 8,” she says.

Talented Blenheim vocalist and pianist Hadlee Anderson will be one of the many young musicians performing at the regional ‘Tempo’ concert on Friday. The 15-year-old, who has won a multitude of national singing competitions throughout New Zealand, will be part of the vast range of age-groups playing at the monthly event known as ‘Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage’. Driving tips Dear Ed, Having driven for many years in Australia, and being used to an average commute time of 45 minutes each way to work (usually in 1st gear), I’m staggered at the impatience of some Blenheim motorists. Guys, you’re only 5 minutes from ANYWHERE in this town. Settle down. Tailgaters are a definite problem, but even worse is the unwillingness of drivers to let people into queues around car parks and road works.

Bag Aussies all you like, but they know how to merge in traffic. Here’s a great tip: One in, one out. Let that person in front of you if they’re struggling to find a break in traffic. You’d want the same treatment right? I mean, the glares I’ve gotten if I ‘dare’ to stick my bumper out in an attempt to merge. It’s not pushing in. It’s maintaining the flow of traffic. That way everyone gets home. Thanks in advance, That Guy You Glared At.

Dear Ed, Does anybody else in this town think the Mitre 10 Mega bus service should run from 8am on weekdays, rather than the current 9am start? Think of all the workers who need to start at or before 8.30am, and who would love to use public transport especially in winter!

Pick me! Dear Ed, As requested, on attending for jury service on the 16th of May, a supervisor advised us that the lawyer had the right to unaccountably challenge our suitability and eliminate us from jury service. Myself and others were eliminated. We regard this as unjust and highly offensive! I seriously question the right of a lawyer (or anybody) to overrule the court ballot system and to make a

Dear Ed, With all the doom and gloom of today’s everchanging world and its associated continuance of dramas I would like to say something nice and positive about my recent experience here in Blenheim. I stayed the weekend with family recently and received great customer service at local cafes, smiles from people passing me in the street and really enjoyed the beautiful town you are so blessed to call “home”. Keep up the good work residents of Blenheim, and I would be honoured to pass this on to my friends back home in Auckland. P &J Milnes.

The service is great, the price is great, but it’s a shame that the majority of the working community can’t use it effectively. Not without rotating a long list of excuses as to why they’re late again anyway... Bus Boy, Blenheim.

Inspirational food

Life as a teenager was difficult for Joshua McKay, but his experiences and journey toward creating a better life for himself are what have inspired him to work with youth. His passion for food, travel and the outdoors have also played an important role in Joshua’s teaching position with the Marlborough Community College, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out.

Joshua first began with the college over a year ago after becoming an outdoor learning tutor for the Adventure based Learning programme. Working with youth, especially in the outdoors was something Joshua really enjoyed but when a teaching opportunity arose in the cookery programme Joshua quickly jumped at the chance. “I am a qualified chef so when the previous tutor left, I knew that this was a great opportunity and way to pass on my enthusiasm for food,” he says. Joshua’s love for food began young and after leaving high school early he decided to pursue training at Polytech. This led to an apprenticeship at the Boatshed Café in Nelson where he worked in particular with seafood for two years. At the age of 25 Joshua received his first

At present Joshua has seven eager minded students who attend the programme five days per week. Not only do they learn the foundation of food preparation and cooking, they also learn everything from safety and knife skills through to the art of making bread. “If you asked me 10 years ago what I would be doing, I would never have imagined I would be teaching. “I have been told I have a gift for working with youth so I can really connect with these kids and help them along the path toward a budding career in the food industry,” he says.

Kyle Strong and Vijay Anthony from Chequers Café/Wine Bar.

Early memories watching his mother cooking in the kitchen were what inspired Chequers Café/Wine Bar Kyle Strong to pursue a career as a chef. Teamed with sous chef Vijay Anthony, who came to Marlborough specifically to work in the Chequers kitchen three-years ago, Kyle says Chequers diversity of food options and reputation for excellence is what brings back diners on a regular basis. “We have regular diners who eat here nearly every day of the week, and sometimes more than once,” Kyle says. Kyle’s career as a chef began 18 years ago after working as an apprentice at a Christchurch hotel before taking on the role as sous chef at the city’s Café Valentino. In 2002 Kyle moved to Marlborough for a change of lifestyle, chefing at what was formally ‘Paysanne Cafe’ before joining the

Chequers team five years ago. Sous chef Vijay, who is originally from India, decided to expand on his hospitality career upon moving to New Zealand, and says he enjoys infusing Indian flavours with the Chequers menu. “My Chicken Vindaloo is a westernized take on an authentic recipe which offers a really spicy kick,” he says. With the chefs’ new winter menu well underway, a new breakfast menu due to be introduced on June 15 will be an exciting addition, says Kyle. In addition to the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, the front food cabinet boasts a delicious range of desserts, slices, cakes and savoury options. “Whether you are after a coffee and light snack or a dinner meal, we have a huge range to satisfy all tastes,” says Kyle.

Chequers Cafe/Wine Bar: With inviting indoor and outdoor dining areas, Chequers Café/Wine Bar can cater for private functions including wedding receptions, and has the capacity to seat up to 140. Open seven days a week, chefs are cooking all day and will even cook for demand into the late hours of the night. The wine bar offers a full selection of beer, wine and cocktails, and also offers

weekly specials on house wines, house spirits and tap beers. For that special occasion, customers can bring their own bottles of wine as Chequers offers a BYO service with corkage fee. Happy hour runs from 5pm to 7pm Thursday and Friday, so bring along your friends and work mates and make the most of what Chequers has to offer.

Horticulture icon an NMIT patron

NMIT tutor Don Cross [left] stands with newlyappointed NMIT horticulture programme patron Ralph Ballinger.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology [NMIT] announced last week the signing of internationally renowned horticulturalist Ralph Ballinger as a patron of the school’s Marlborough horticulture programme. Mr Ballinger, now in his mid-90s, has strong links with the school. He has previously served on the NMIT council, and the land on which his wife Pat ran a horticulture business for many years is now the land on which the school’s campus sits. NMIT head of technol-

ogy, primary industries and maritime studies Jeff Wilson says it is an honour to have Mr Ballinger associated with the programme. “This is a man who’s given his life to horticulture and still has a real energy and knowledge to share. We are privileged to have someone of his calibre willing to lend his mana.” Mr Ballinger says he was thrilled to be asked to contribute. “I am happy to do all I can to encourage the next generation of horti-

culturalists. I have always supported research and the development of new ideas,” he says. “If my experience can help in any way to develop the industry, then I’m willing to provide it.” Mr Ballinger graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science in 1940, and was seconded to help with seed production research in the UK during WWII. He received an OBE in 1978 for his services to horticulture and, in recent years, published his autobiography ‘The Sea and the Soil’.

Plan your winter trip carefully If you find yourself hitting the road during adverse conditions, consider these tips to stay safe on your journey.

1. Know your route and keep abreast of weather conditions. 2. Drink plenty of water. When the weather is chilly, dehydration can lead to fatigue and reduced alertness, both of which can be deadly when you are driving in icy conditions. 3. Eat enough food. Your body needs more nourishment in cold weather than it does on a balmy summer day. Carry a day’s worth of high-energy food and water in a warm area of your vehicle in case you are stranded for a few hours. 4. Pack a winter travel safety kit. Include a cell phone, an ice scraper and brush, a tow rope, cat litter (for use as a traction aid), blankets, a good flashlight, a candle, matches, a good book, a portable weather radio and a can of lock de-icer. (Never use hot water on glass or locks — it will refreeze and create a bigger problem 5. Slow down. A good rule of thumb is to reduce speed by 50 percent in snowy conditions. Equally important, don’t go too slow. Your car needs momentum to keep moving through snow on grades. 6. Keep a light touch on the controls. Smooth operation is the key to keeping control in slippery situations. Nervousness can lead to a hard clench of the steering wheel, which can result in loss of control. Consciously loosen your grasp or stretch out your fingers from time to time to help prevent that white-knuckled grip. 7. Know how to recover from skids. When braking on a slippery road, it’s all too easy to “lock up” your wheels by stepping on the brakes a little too hard. If you start to skid, steer the vehicle gently in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go and don’t touch your brakes. 8. Make frequent rest stops. Winter travel is much more fatiguing than summer cruising, so stop every hour or so. Get out and stretch, it takes only five minutes to significantly improve your level of alertness. 9. If you get stuck, stay in your vehicle. Stay warm and wait for assistance. Make sure that your exhaust pipe is clear of any obstructions, including snow and ice; if you don’t, carbon monoxide gas can build up inside the vehicle.

We can do it all! So why go anywhere else?

• Have your car checked or serviced before starting on your holiday to minimise the inconvenience of a breakdown. • Check the pressure of your tyres and make sure your registration and WoF is current, and if you own a diesel, buy plenty of RUC for the holidays. • Get adequate rest and a good night’s sleep before setting off on a long road trip. Avoid driving at times you would normally be asleep, late at night or early morning are high risk times for fatigue crashes. • If fatigued, pass the driving over to another driver, provided they are less fatigued, or quickly find a safe area where they can pull off the road to have a short powernap 20 minutes is recommended. • Enjoy your holiday! Stay safe, drive safe.

Tips for reducing wear and tear on your vehicle: Avoid Cold Starts Cold starts are where the journey that we drive is too short for the car engine to warm up to its optimum temperature, such as a short trip down to the shops and back. Short trips use up more fuel, produce more emissions and cause more ware and tear on you vehicle engine. The recommendation – Try and plan your trips so that you get your errands done in one trip rather than multiple smaller ones. Look after your car Maintenance is a key factor to ensuring your car runs efficiently and effectively. A car that is properly tuned with correct pressure tyres will reduce your fuel consumption and in turn save you money.

Tips for better fuel economy on your drive: Try and avoid peak traffic were possible Stop start driving leads to very poor fuel efficiency so avoiding the situations that can cause this can help ensure better fuel efficiency. Drive in the right gear Inappropriate low or high gear driving causes over-consumption of fuel. Change into the most appropriate gear as quickly as possible without accelerating any more than necessary. Keep to the speed limits Just in case you need another reason to stick to within the speed limits, higher speeds result in higher fuel consumption levels, so at the higher speed levels on the open road – stick to the limits.

Safety advice from the professionals

Brendan gill

Dave and Brendan Gill at Elite Tyre & Alignment on Grove Road give their “Safe Winter Driving” advice. Tyres: It’s important to have good tread across the whole tyre and the correct air pressure. Although the legal limit is 1.5mm, a tyre’s ability to sweep water and avoid aquaplaning is dramatically reduced beyond 2mm. Wheel Alignment : No matter how good your tyres are, if your wheel alignment isn’t correct, you’ll have reduced grip and handling, and increased tyre wear and fuel consumption. If you haven’t had your alignment checked in the last 10,000kms it’s time to book it in. Oil Change: An oil change before winter sets in is a great way to make sure your car is in good shape. In weather at or below freezing some vehicles may require a different weight oil to properly lubricate the engine. Brakes: Brakes are a no brainer. Get your brake pads checked to help avoid accidents.

Suspension: Suspension, brakes and tyres go hand in hand in hand, if one of the three isn’t working correctly none of the three will be working correctly. Battery: Get a battery condition check to make sure your battery can make it through the winter, and clean the terminals! Lights: The days are shorter and the mornings and evenings are darker, make sure you can be seen on the road. Make sure all your lights are in working order. There’s nothing wrong with driving with your lights on during the day - make sure you’re seen! Wipers: New wiper refills are a cheap and easy way of making sure your windscreen stays clear of rain and debris, if your wipers still aren’t working as well as they should after new refills, it might be time for new wiper blades as well. Washer: Always use windscreen washer fluid, not water. In the winter water can

freeze in both the lines and in the bottle causing enough damage to stop your washer working altogether. Windscreen washer fluid has a lower freezing point than water and is a more efficient cleaner ensuring the outside of the windscreen stays clean and clear. Anti Freeze/Coolant: Antifreeze/ coolant ensures the water in your radiator doesn’t freeze in the cold weather. What most people don’t realise is that your coolant doesn’t only lower the freezing point, but it also raises the boiling point. Make sure you get your radiator water tested to make sure the coolant level is correct! Free Advice: Elite Tyre and Alignment are locals helping locals, we’d love to see you in store. Even if you just have a question, or want to get your tyre pressures checked for free. We can help with most of your motoring issues, and if we cant, we’ll point you in the direction of the best person for the job.

Protect your car windshield A frozen car windshield is virtually impossible to see through. To reduce and in some cases prevent your windshield from freezing, here is some advice. 1) Park your car in a warm, covered area such as a garage or carport, or even cover it with a car cover. Sheltering the vehicle will help prevent moisture from getting to the windshield and freezing. Alternatively, purchase and use a car cover or a specially designed windshield cover created precisely to prevent ice from accumulating on a car’s windshield if you do not have a carport or garage.

2) Spray your windshield with a product designed for reducing ice buildup. Alternatively, mix up a solution of approximately 2/3 alcohol or vinegar and 1/3 water, and spray your car’s windshield with it at night. The alcohol will help prevent ice from forming on the windshield. 3) Fill your windshield wiper formula reservoir with a nonfreezing formula. This way, if frost forms while you drive or while your car is parked during the day, you can quickly spray

WINTER DRIVING Prepare your vehicle A few simple steps can help you ensure your vehicle is prepared for whatever winter throws your way: • Have your vehicle checked out. Many garages offer safety checks covering tyres, lights, brakes, cooling systems, fanbelts, batteries and alternators. • Make sure that your heater, fans, wipers, defrosters and demisters are working • Always demist and de-ice all windows before you start driving so you have a clear view. • Antifreeze is an essential winter ingredient for your car’s engine.

DRIVING IN THE WET, SNOW OR ICE Always remember • Drive to the conditions. • Allow greater following distances on frosty and wet days. • Obey emergency road closed signs and barriers. • Follow the directions of any road patrol or police officer. • Avoid towing in icy conditions. • Road closures and restrictions are put in place for the safety of road users.

Head lice are an age old problem - they have always existed in human communities and they can only be tackled by a community approach of prevention and eradication. Beating head lice can be tough but their spread can be controlled by the appropriate treatment of those who are infested and by taking precautionary measures to repel the lice. What are head lice and how do they live? The head louse is a tiny greyish-brown wingless insect, roughly the same size as a sesame seed on a burger bun when fully grown. Nits on the other hand are the empty egg cases left behind after head lice have hatched and are found cemented tightly onto the hair shaft, where they remain for weeks or months even when the head lice themselves have been cleared. Head lice live on the head and feed by sucking blood from the scalp. The eggs of the female use glands in her reproductive system which secrete a super-strong ad-

hesive that holds the egg in place. The eggs of head lice hatch in about 7-10 days. The egg-to-egg cycle is about 3-4 weeks. How are head lice spread? Head lice are usually spread by direct head-tohead contact with infested persons and sometimes by objects such as pillows, combs, hats etc, when the item is used immediately after use by an infested person. Prevention of head lice - infestation and re-infestation: • Avoid head-to-head contact with other people,

especially in schools and day care centres. • Keep long hair tied back, especially at school. • Don’t share hats, bike helmets, brushes, combs or pillows. • Check children’s hair weekly • Wash in hot water the pillow cases, towels and hats of infected people – a combination of tea tree drops and lemongrass with the water works well. • Treat all infested people as soon as lice are detected. Re-treating after three days is generally recommended • Comb hair regularly with a good quality metaltoothed nit comb. • See your local pharmacist for a range of treatment options.

Naturally healthy hair Excessive use of products and over-handled hair can lead to hair looking frayed and frizzy. Overheating, chemicals, dyes and strengtheners can strip the hair and leave it dry and frayed. Other common culprits are frequent shampooing, long un-kept hair and a lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet. Keep your hair looking and feeling smooth and healthy by avoiding chemicals and chlorinated pools, and keep dead ends at bay with regular

trims. You may want to try using a leave-in conditioner. In terms of nutrition, the herb horsetail is naturally high in silica and may improve hair strength. Making a hair mask with a handful of jojoba oil and a couple of drops of rosemary oil before shampooing once a week will add a protective layer to the hair. It’s also important to not wash your dry and frayed hair on a daily basis. Leaving it several days without a wash

will allow time for its natural oils to build up. Low iron levels can lead to hair that looks and feels dryer and lighter in colour. Eat foods rich in iron. Women need on average 18 mg of iron per day due to monthly blood loss experienced during menstruation, and this goes up to 27 mg per day during pregnancy. Remember, check with your healthcare professional before supplementing with iron.

Sleeping like a baby “I know you’re tired little baby, but why won’t you go to sleep?” How many times a day do you ask yourself that question? You know your baby is tired - no doubt in your mind - however your baby seems to not be able to ‘switch off’ and go to sleep! Getting baby into a ‘sleepy’ state (more than drowsy) is sometimes the key to them successfully being able to nod off. There is such a difference between being ‘tired’ or ‘drowsy’, rather than just ‘sleepy’. So when you see those tired signs you are so well accustomed to, wrap your baby, (if your baby likes being wrapped), and help your tired wee baby slip over into a sleepy state by: • rocking • patting • ssshhhing • singing • white noise • simulating those sounds and experiences of the uterus that work such a treat. This is not ‘bad habit’ forming, this is about transition from the uterus to the outside world, just like any other of life’s learning experiences - for some it just takes a little longer!

Saint Mary’s School welcomed the addition of two new classrooms last Friday with an official opening and blessing ceremony. The construction of rooms 13 and 14 began at the end of 2010 and were completed at the end of March this year. The rooms were designed with more open space and the flexibility to adapt to new technology as it is introduced. Principal Alister Bridgman says the two classrooms were the final part of a trilogy for the school following upgrades of the administration area and library.

Bible Answers... with Pastor Jeff Williams

Do you have a Bible question for Jeff? Email us your question at pastor@mbbc.org.nz or post it to us. Full confidentiality is assured at all times. Q – “In John 1:42 my NIV Bible states that ‘Cephas’ (Aramaic) and ‘Peter’ (Greek) mean ‘rock’ – is it relevant that the King James Version translates ‘Cephas’ as ‘stone’?” (Margaret in Te Awamutu) A – Yes. Your NIV is not only in error, but is attempting to teach you false doctrine. We have many words for rocks in English – rock, stone, pebble, boulder, nugget, etc. and these are obviously not all identical. The same is true in Greek. The word “petra” means large rock or boulder; the word “petros” means stone or pebble. The name “Peter” is a transliteration (not a translation – but a word simply slid over from language into another) of “petros” – the name Peter (Greek) or Cephas (Aramaic) means a small stone or pebble. So why on earth does any of this matter? The simple answer is that our Bible identifies and compares our God to a ROCK! As in a very solid, immovable boulder or piece of bedrock! Deut 32:4 – “He is the Rock…a God of truth and without iniquity…” I Sam 2:2 – “…neither is there any rock like our God.” 2 Sam 22:32 – “…who is a rock, save our God?” 2 Sam 23:3 – “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me…” Psa 18:2 – “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress…” Psa 89:26 – “Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation” I Cor 10:4 – “…they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ” You get the point – God is our ROCK – Peter by comparison was just a pebble! Peter (“petros” = small stone or pebble) is intentionally never referred to as a rock as this is a designation for God alone! The King James translators were very careful to properly translate this word as “stone” in John 1:42 to preserve this important distinction. Where does the false doctrine come in? The Roman Catholic church incorrectly teaches that Peter was the rock that their church was founded upon – this false doctrine comes from twisting Matt. 16:18 from its context. As Deut 32:31 astutely points out, “their rock is not as our Rock!” If your church is founded upon Peter, you’re in the wrong church. Jesus is the “chief cornerstone” of the true church (I Pet 2:6) – “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (I Cor 3:11) The NIV is simply teaching Roman Catholic doctrine – this fact is not surprising in that this and many other modern translations (including the Jehovah’s Witness New World Translation) are based on Roman Catholic manuscripts. John 1:42 is just one of many passages where this pattern can be seen. It does matter which Bible you use!

By Celeste Lodewyk Tua Marina man Bill Neal has been a keen ploughman since a young age, and it is his love for working with vintage machinery that has seen him win the Vintage Qualifying section of the Marlborough Ploughing Association qualifying event held on Sunday. The event was held at Quinton Wratts property and saw ploughers competing to qualify for Case IH Silver Plough & Vintage Class to represent Marlborough at the 2012 New Zealand finals. Many qualifying events are held throughout the country culminating in regional competitions from which contestants are drawn to compete at the NZ Ploughing Championships. Around 20 ploughmen entertained the crowd with their new and vintage machinery whilst competing in six different categories. For Bill, this was the ideal setting to showcase his ploughing skills on his 1946 W6 McCormick Derring tractor pulling a red and grey plough which once belonged to the late Les Ham. Bill has been an Association member for 10-years and says it’s the “smell of the dirt” that he enjoys most about ploughing.

“As a young man I spent many years ploughing when working on farms before going to work at Safe Air as an aircraft propeller overhaul engineer. “Since retiring I have continued with my ploughing, often doing odd jobs and farm machinery maintenance for local farmers. I would say it’s in the blood and it’s something I really enjoy,” he says.

Results:

WARM: Beavertown Blenheim Lions members Raewyn Thomas, Margaret Thompson, Marie Derry and Carol Taylor presented a box of knitted clothing for premature babies to Wairau Hospital midwife Raylene Cresswell.

A box of woollies The Beavertown Blenheim Lions group has helped to make a warm difference to premature babies born at Wairau Hospital. Yesterday four of the 10 women involved in a group kitting project presented a large box of beanies, booties, singlets and a jacket to maternity staff.

The women decided to hand knit 78 woollen items after reading an appeal by maternity staff in the Sun Newspaper. The project took six weeks to finish and was “very satisfying and rewarding”, says Beavertown Blenheim Lions president Margaret Thompson.

Al Rees, Aleeze Toombs, Tony and Rachel Greig have organised a Moto Guzzi motorcycle rally to be held in Marlborough over Labour weekend, October 2011. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

A group of Moto Guzzi motorcycle enthusiasts have joined forces to continue a 16-year long annual rally which came close to ending last year. When the rally’s original organisers announced they would be calling it quits after the 2010 event, Canvastown couple Al Rees and Aleeze Toombs and Nelson couple Rachel and Tony Greig decided to take it on themselves. “The rally has such a rich history and the riders who take part have all come to know one another really well, so we knew it would be a shame to let it end,” says Rachel. “In addition 2011 is the 90th anniversary of Moto Guzzi’s foundation, so there was no way we could let it go,” Al adds. Each year the rally is alternated between the north and south islands, and because Blenheim

would have been next on the list, Spring Creek was chosen to host the rally this year. Lynne and Ray Phillips at The Spring Creek Junction hotel have come on board offering their services to rally participants, and with riders coming from all over the country Spring Creek was the ideal central location, says Rachel. “The Junction Hotel will be the focus point of the rally and we will also be using the rugby clubrooms next door for live entertainment during the weekend.” The rally will begin on Friday, October 21 where riders will come together. On Saturday there will be a poker run through Queen Charlotte Drive, coming back through Havelock and Rapaura Road. There will be public bike displays held throughout the poker run, though details are yet to be confirmed. In addition there will

be a Moto Guzzi motorcycle display and a number of demo bikes available to the public to try out, provided by Truimph NZ. On Sunday the rally will begin to wind down with a 300km ride followed by entertainment and a get together for the riders. “Those who have already entered seem really excited for the event and for many it is the only chance each year they get to catch up with fellow riders,” Tony says. The rally is open to all ages of Moto Guzzi enthusiasts. The four friends have in one way or another been involved with motorcycles for a majority of their lives and it is because of their enthusiasm that this rally can continue. If you are interested in sponsoring or participating in the rally, you can contact Rachel on 021 137 8187 or email tattleyrappet@ gmail.com

Warriors testing their fans’ faith again Nearly every year, the critics put the kiss of death on the New Zealand Warriors by proclaiming it is ‘their season’, their time to sweep everything aside and claim the NRL title. And, nearly every year, the Warriors duly oblige by either failing to make the competition’s top-eight, or failing to take the last few steps after finishing near the top of the regular season ladder. This year has so far panned out much like many others - the only difference so far being that the pre-season raps on the Warriors came from respected Australian rugby league commentators, like Peter Sterling, rather than just

our own over-excited Warriors enthusiasts. Of course, success in the NRL is hard to define. It is one of the toughest sporting competitions in the world, arguably the toughest, with week-in, weekout brutality on the field, a relative lack of ‘easy-beats’, and a gruelling travel and playing schedule. But, by saying ‘the Warriors’ year’, these critics mean the year they win the competition. On the back of the familiar predictions, then, it was no surprise to see them drop their first three games. What was surprising, though, was to see the way they bounced back – seven wins from their last

eight games epitomised by their defensive effort in the last two. They currently sit sixth on the NRL ladder, and have the fifthleading point scorer in James Maloney, but what can we expect from the rest of the season? Since making the semi-finals in 2003, the Warriors have been a mixed bag. They have made the playoffs three times, but been knocked out in the semi-finals on two occasions and in the first round once. It seems the Warriors are on their way to a comfortable top-eight finish at this stage, but whether they can capatalise on that position and claim rugby league’s showpiece event in 2011 remains highly doubtful.

Pink Poppy apprentice top in NZ

Pink Poppy apprentice Aroha Hebberd pictured with Pink Poppy owner Nina Stanley has been named New Zealand’s best apprentice florist, an honour which will be taking her to London later this year. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk.

By Celeste Lodewyk At first, Pink Poppy florist apprentice Aroha Hebberd did not think she had what it took to be a good florist. But four years on she has wowed the country and has been named the best apprentice florist in New Zealand, as well as winning the title of top apprentice award out of all trades in the Canterbury region. Aroha competed at last year’s Ellerslie International Flower Show in Christchurch, vying for the chance to represent NZ at the 2011 WorldSkills International Floristry Competition in London later this year. She won silver overall before going on to win gold at the NZ WorldSkills selection Competition. “There were a lot of tears and hugs going around when I found out I had won and I am still pinching myself now, I am really looking forward to competing in London,” Aroha says. Her win entitles her to go to both the Oceania Skills Competition being held in Australia in July, as a lead up to the WorldSkills competition in London in October. In addition, Aroha’s employer Nina Stanley was selected to be NZ’s floristry ‘expert’ for WorldSkills and will be travelling with Aroha to London where she will also be judging. “I’m so happy to be able to go

along and offer support to Aroha, plus it’s a huge honour for me to be asked to judge,” Nina says. The WorldSkills competition is often referred to as the “Olympics of Skills and Trades”, Nina says. “It attracts up to 200,000 visitors to the event, 1000 competitors from 50 countries competing in 45 skill areas over four exciting days.” The competition runs from October 5 to 8 and showcases skills ranging from electronics to plumbing, creative arts and fashion to cabinet making. Aroha and Nina will be travelling with the NZ team of top apprentices and their skill experts named the “Tool Blacks”, and will proudly bear the silver fern on their NZ uniforms. In the lead up to the competition, Aroha and Nina have been busy fundraising to cover their travel costs to London. To date they have done catering, auction dinners, raffles and floristry demos to name a few, but they still need help to reach their target goal. “We have been inundated with fantastic support from customers and general public, but if there are any others who would like to support us to get to the WorldSkills competition we would be greatly appreciative,” Aroha says.
