By Celeste Lodewyk Last month, Marlborough welcomed the arrival of its third set of triplets born within the last 16 years. Blenheim parents Jason and Angela Clark, along with big sister Nina (2), told The Sun they are thrilled with their new arrivals, Ben, Jack and Stella, who were born on April 8 in Nelson Hospital via caesarean section.

In what began as a triple surprise, the triplets were born after a 35-week-long “healthy” pregnancy. “It was an incredible experience. We had a theatre team of 20 plus most of the Nelson medical team wanted to be present so the room was pretty full. We could have sold tickets to the birth,” joked Angela. Angela first found out she was pregnant with triplets at her eight week scan, though she says

Two original songs, three guitars, a drum kit and a catchy band name could see Marlborough bands find fame at the Smokefreerockquest regional event in Nelson on May 21. Organisers say this year’s Smokefreerockquest will see entrants experience real-life rock stardom. Last year, Blenheim band Remastered, as well as Picton teenager Jordan Skipper, made it to the regional finals, with Jordan placing second and Remastered placing third. Last year entries exceeded 800 for the first time ever, but that record may not be toppled by the close-off day of May 17, as Christchurch bands are being given an extended deadline to allow for the effects of the earthquake on schools and students. Last year’s winners, Te Awamutu band The Good Fun, have recorded their first single, Naughty Little Sin, filmed their first music video and had over 120,000 hits on YouTube. The state of national emergency declared following February’s magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch has now officially expired, Civil Defence Minister John Carter announced on Sunday. The state of emergency in New Zealand - that applied specifically to Christchurch City - was declared on 23 February. It the first declared under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002 and extended for nearly 10 weeks.

Judging is over for the 32 entrants in the 2010/11 Marlborough Environment Awards, with the winners to be announced at a presentation dinner at Drylands Winery on May 6. Awards co-ordinator Bev Doole says entries for this year’s competition were well up from previous years, with judges of the ‘innovation and efficiency’ categories especially busy. Eleven projects ranging from worm farms to a vineyard frost fan were entered in that category. Other categories in the biannual awards run by the Marlborough District Council include farming, forestry, winegrowing and horticulture, landscape and habitat enhancement. Entrants typically include Marlborough companies, community groups and individuals who are “going the extra mile” to look after the environment, Bev says. She says the awards have an all-round benefit. “For the entrants, it’s a chance to share their knowledge and get feedback from the judges – it’s like having an independent audit that highlights positives and suggests improvements. “For the public, it’s a chance to find out what’s going on in Marlborough to protect and enhance our environment.” Bev says one particularly exciting entry, entered in the habitat enhancement section, is Will and Rose Parson’s kayak and bird-watching tours held on the Wairau lagoons, a significant wildlife habitat for Blenheim. Bev says the pair are restoring their QEII covenanted wetland to recreate the vegetation and birdlife that might have been there 1000 years ago.

Peters takes on Highlanders role By Damian George The Highlanders Super Rugby franchise has enlisted the help of Marlborough businessman and former NZRU director Mark Peters to help upturn its financial position. Peters, who served on the NZRU board from 2002-2010, was approached by NZRU chairman Mike Eagle to join the Highlanders board as a director at the start of the current season. The co-owner of local business Peters Doig Chartered Accountants says he had no hesitation in accepting the offer. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the Highlanders, so I was quite happy to try and help them out as best I can to get some strength back in their financial and administerial position.” Peters, cha ir man of the Marlborough Rugby Union from 1995-2001, says the Highlanders’ struggles on the field in the Southern Hemisphere competi-

tion in recent years had also seen it take a hit off the field. “They have had some poor financial results, and the NZRU have funded those losses,” he says. “Part of the problem was there had been a lot of crossovers with the Otago Rugby Union in terms of who was doing what. “Now there’s a distinct line of

management. It’s more streamlined, the whole governance and management process.” He says he has already been working on some ideas to turn the franchise’s fortunes around, including putting some accurate financial reporting systems and capital raising initiatives in place. The ability of the Highlanders team to produce results on the field, as they have started to do in 2011, would also have a positive effect on the franchise, he says. “It’s not the be-all and end-all, but it helps. “But we can’t just rely on gate takings; we’ve got to get everything else right too.” Peters was in Dunedin last weekend for a Highlanders board meeting, and will continue to travel south monthly throughout the season. He says he will review his position with the NZRU board at the end of the year.

Nothing off limits, says commissioner By Damian George A fraud case totalling millions of dollars for ratepayers could come before an independent review of council tendering processes beginning next week, Marlborough District councillor Jamie Arbuckle says. The review, to be carried out by Auckland lawyer Denis Sheard, has been scheduled for May 12 and 13 following allegations of corruption by Cr Arbuckle recently. Eleven people, including three councillors, have already approached the independent commissioner in relation to the review, with Cr Arbuckle among them. Cr Arbuckle told The Sun on Monday the case is already set to be investigated by police, though he was not able to discuss its details. Mr Sheard says he is also unable to comment on any information

relating to the investigation, due to confidentiality protocol. However, he told The Sun on Monday “no information will be ignored” during the review and matters outside of the tendering Denis Sheard issue could be investigated if raised. “I have no control over what people may want to tell me in the course of the review,” he says. “It seems clear that some of the people who want to talk to me may want to discuss matters outside of the brief. “The nature of the ‘out of scope’ information received will dictate what, if anything, I do with it.” Mr Sheard’s brief, or “terms of

reference”, also states ‘anecdotal or anonymous’ information presented to him will not be considered as evidence throughout the review. But Mr Sheard says such evidence may be in sufficient detail that it is possible to verify the information, especially upon further questioning of the informant. Information which is supplied anonymously would be harder to verify, he says. Due to confidentiality protocol, he is not able to disclose who has requested an interview with him thus far, or what these people had discussed with him. He is scheduled to conduct the interviews in Blenheim on May 12 and 13.

NZ dollar “saving motorists” By Damian George The rise in the New Zealand dollar is keeping further petrol price hikes at bay for the time being, AA Petrolwatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale says. The recent spike in petrol prices in New Zealand has plateaued at the $2.19 mark over the last couple of weeks, though settled oil prices are not the cause, Mr Stockdale says. “The price of oil has risen from

$US117 a barrel at the start of March to $US127 two weeks ago, but that has been offset by the rise in value of the New Zealand dollar. “The dollar is saving motorists at the moment.” He says it seems we have seen the worst of the rapid surge in petrol prices sparked by the Middle Eastern crisis earlier in the year. “Saudi Arabia has increased production to offset the supply shortage out of Libya, so the situ-

ation hasn’t got any worse. “We have some confidence, as long as our dollar remains high and oil prices don’t continue to increase, that we shouldn’t expect prices to change in the short- term. “Eventually, the Middle Eastern crisis will settle down and we may even see oil prices come down.” The New Zealand dollar currently stands at just over $US0.80, up from $US0.72 at the beginning of March.

The committee has teamed up with the Clubs of Marlborough to put on the brunch to help raise funds to go towards getting their own Plunket rooms in Renwick. From June 2, Plunket clinics will be held fortnightly in Renwick and although their current space at the Renwick Anglican Church is much appreciated, Jennifer says they want to set up a permanent space of their own. In addition, because Marlborough Plunket’s annual appeal was cancelled this year, committee members began brainstorming other innovative ideas to help raise funds. The brunch idea came about after members suggested combining the fundraiser with a day which celebrates women in our community – Mothers’ Day. “We thought it would be a nice way for people to receive something in return for supporting Plunket, plus it gives

families a great day out,” Jennifer says. The brunch will run from 10:30am to 2pm at Clubs of Marlborough who has kindly donated the space. Head teacher Heather Graham says sign language is one of the three official languages of NZ, something the kindergarten embraces. “Last year we had a student’s father who was partly deaf working with the kindergarten to teach the children sign language. “We have since continued this teaching and have seen some fantastic results,” she says. Organised by Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand, the week promotes NZ sign language as an official language and raises awareness about the deaf community and the barriers which stop its members from taking part in society. “Learning to sign has been very empowering for the children, with one of the girls being able to sign good morning to her friend who is deaf. “It helps them to be accepting of others,” Heather says.

Keyboard club celebrates By Damian George For nearly thirty years, the Marlborough Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club have been meeting to share musical knowledge and recreate sounds from a wide range of musical genres. The club celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, and is taking the opportunity to call on any other budding keyboardists to join the club for their twice-a-month jam sessions. “We have beginners right up to experienced players,”

club president Anne Hadfield says. “We welcome anyone at any level - we’re really a social group; not a serious group.” Anne says the club, which consists of about 30 members, play music from “right across the board”, including country, pop, musical and classical. She says the club was formed to “promote better understanding of keyboards and organs”. In the early 2000s, people began to sell their organs and

replace them with keyboards because they were portable and easier to play, she says. “We do have a little discussion on technical things occasionally but it’s about coming and having fun.” Among the enthusiasts is visually impaired woman Barbara Church, who lost the ability to read music eight years ago. “I just discovered I could play by ear. “I come along for the fun and friendship and the teacher [Anne] is great,” she says.

Dear Ed, I agree with David Lloyd. The real issue with the Marlborough District Council is wider than “corruption.” It is the process and transparency. The criteria for an investigation needs to be wide, just not tendering for contracts. Did David Lloyd’s letter have undertones of criticism of Jamie Arbuckle?

The Sun survey is an interesting idea but because of its content, is almost guaranteed to produce a negative result. My reasoning is simple. We all know the cost of the new theatre but how many know the cost of the upgrade of the old theatre? A figure of $1 million plus was mentioned about two years ago and that the seating capacity would be reduced to about 350. How many of your readers will remember that? In my opinion unless the public have up to date costs and consequences of both options, any survey is at best misleading, at worst, capable of sinking the project. Leo McKendry

MDC Formal Review Dear Ed, The wording and criteria for the “Formal Review of Council Tendering and Corruption Claims” seems very restricted. The words in the notice are, I assume, put together by staff members? The words say “anecdotal comment will not constitute evidence.” I know of one contractor, now deceased, who gave up putting in a tender because he considered the process “corrupt” not in the way of bribery necessarily, but certainly in favouritism. This review is a great chance for the MDC to clear the air over rumours that have been around for quite a few years. MDC should be looking at the matter in total, as one letter writer I read put it, that is governance, processes and culture. Don Coyote

Being a good beauty therapist involves more than administering beauty treatments, it takes passion, enthusiasm and the desire to help clients feel more confident about themselves. This is the reason that Skin Beautiful Beauty Therapy Clinic owner and operator Juliet Lindsay continues to be a successful businesswoman after 10-years in the industry. Skin Beautiful was first established over 20 years ago by Joan O’Malley, then purchased by Juliet’s parents, Neville and Phillipa McCallum. Juliet began her career as a nail technician before completing her training in beauty therapy. Two and a half years ago Juliet purchased the business and has continued to offer clients a full range of beauty therapies, including cosmetic tattooing, electrolysis services and vitamin facial infusions.

Growing up in a traditional winemaking region of Bulgaria, Diana Katardzhieva is now employed as laboratory manager and winemaker at the Whitehaven Wine Company. Her degree in winemaking and 15 years experience in Bulgaria’s wine industry – and a Kiwi partner - led her to New Zealand. “The industries are so different, and my English was limited, but I was very comfortable bringing my skills to Whitehaven as it’s a family company which values its people,” says Diana. Her role as laboratory manager is to support the winemaking process and for that Diana uses the precision, analytical thinking and attention to detail learned through her first career in the world of medicine. “Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir were un-

known varieties to me when I arrived but I have found my opinions as a winemaker are respected and valued. And I have real pride in working for the winery that has just won the Easter Show Trophy for the country’s top Sauvignon Blanc,” says Diana. Diana also loves working with the young people who join Whitehaven each year; she becomes ‘vintage mum’, training the multicultural mix working at Whitehaven during the high pressure time of harvest.

“What I love about owning my own business is that there are no limits on how much I can do for my clients. “I can be as cautious as I want to ensure my clients receive the best services and treatments possible, which includes training I have done to better understand conditions and medications when carrying out my treatments,” she says. Owner-operators Gavin and Brayden say, whether you are simply looking to lose weight and keep fit or you are a serious athlete striving to reach goals, Kustom Fitness can help you get there. “Our main objective is getting people goal-orientated. People know where they want to be but they get stuck in a rut and that’s where we can help them out.” Brayden says the key to reaching your goals is not over-training, something many athletes do because

they believe it is helping them. “Over-training is common. The result is you end up with too much muscle breakdown and you end up weaker,” Gavin explains. Instead, Kustom Fitness focuses on getting as much as you can out of one training session a week, with the rest of the week dedicated to recovery. Client David Stubbs can testify to the success of this philosophy. He has recently been selected for the New Zealand wake boarding team to compete in the World Championships in Italy in July. “I always went to the gym but I just didn’t really have that many goals

and I wasn’t really seeing many results. He says he would have never made the New Zealand team had it not been for Kustom Fitness. “It’s helped my riding out a lot and just helped me with being smarter with my training, with more of an emphasis on recovery.” David’s program was a 32-Week Sports Program, with exercises relevant to his sport. It featured three different intensity phases so he peaked at his given goals. David’s programme was designed once again around the principle of not over-training, and delivered the desired results.

At 9am, a 43-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching the liquor ban. At 12.50pm, a 32-year-old male sickness beneficiary was arrested for stealing from New World. At 4.15pm, a 39-year-old male security worker was arrested for possession of cannabis and and an offensive weapon, namely a knife, following a domestic incident.

At 9.15am, a 34-year-old woman was arrested for driving while forbidden. At 1.50pm, a 48-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man, both unemployed, were arrested for drunken behaviour at Thursday’s horse races. The woman was charged with offensive behaviour, and the man was charged with disorderly behaviour. At 3.15pm, a 24-year-old unemployed man was arrested for possession of cannabis and cannabissmoking equipment. At 11pm, a 16-year-old female student was arrested for breaching her bail curfew. An hour later, a 23-year-old male forklift driver was arrested for failing to appear in court.

At 12.55am, an 18-year-old unemployed man was arrested for intentional damage after he allegedly damaged two windows at his mother’s address. At 12.10pm, a 43-year-old male postal worker was arrested and charged with stealing property from Mitre 10 Mega. At 5.30pm, a 21-year-old male tourist and a 20-year-old female cellar hand were arrested for consuming cannabis. At 7.10pm, a 33-year-old unemployed man was arrested for stealing more than $90 worth of petrol from Caltex Tauranga in January. At 11.50pm, a 37-year-old female retail assistant was arrested for breaching the liquor ban. At the same time, an 18-year-old male student was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

At 2.05pm, a 21-year-old male student was arrested for driving while disqualified. At 3.30pm, a 20-year-old man was arrested for breaching his bail conditions. At 6.20pm, a 47-year-old male builder was arrested on two warrants for failing to appear in court. At 8.25pm, an 18-year-old male student was arrested for shoplifting and offensive language after he allegedly stole a $92 bottle of champagne from Blenheim New World. At about 10pm, a 50-year-old male driver was stopped on Hutcheson Street and subsequently tested positive for drink driving. An hour later, a 39-year-old male painter was arrested on a fines warrant.

Q – Would you please explain what the Bible says regarding “human nature”, the stuff we are born with? (DH – Blenheim) A – Sure, as long as you don’t mind looking into the cesspool. Human nature is not very pretty. Of course it wasn’t always like this. In Genesis the Lord records the creation of Adam and Eve. Gen. 1:26 says that God created man in his own image and likeness – thus a sinless God created sinless man. Adam was put into the Garden of Eden and warned not to eat from a particular tree – if he did, he would surely die. Adam failed the test and on that day part of him “died” – as sin and rebellion entered his soul, Adam lost his holiness and became separated from God in a spiritual sense. Gaining a conscience (the knowledge of good and evil) was a poor trade off in this deal. What Adam lost affected not just himself, but all his descendants. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” (Rom. 5:12) When Adam and Eve had children, they were no longer made in God’s image, but in Adam’s image and likeness according to Gen. 5:3 – they were born sinners! This aspect of spiritual deadness in our nature that we inherit from our parents is what we call our “human nature.” Although this term never appears in scripture, the word “nature” in this sense does. Other terms that describe this concept are “the flesh” and “the old man.” These refer to that natural bent that even small children have toward sin – no one teaches children to do wrong – they come by it naturally because it is in their nature. Their natural tendency toward selfishness, pride and sin must be curbed if they are to become productive citizens – without gaining the nature of Christ, they have no hope of salvation from hell! We are “by nature the children of wrath.” (Eph. 2:3) Thus children have a sin nature since conception (Psa. 51:5) and speak lies from the womb (Psa. 58:3). At salvation, we are given the righteousness of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to gain the victory over the flesh. Believers become “partakers of the divine nature” (II Peter 1:4) and have the God-given power to do right if they want. After salvation, we have the choice to yield to the old nature or to the new nature (Eph. 4:17-24) – we are rewarded for faithfully doing the right thing and face the chastening hand of God if we do not. Jesus was a man, but did not inherit a sinful human nature because of one important doctrine – the virgin birth. Mary provided the human body and the Holy Spirit provided the sinless nature and thus the God- man was unique from all others. See Heb. 2:16.

Round one of the 2011 Fairweathers Flat Track series got under way on Sunday at North Bank with an impressive field of around 150 riders. All competing for points in a variety of classes, several Marlborough riders have featured at the top of the points tables, something organiser Brad Millar is pleased about. “I think this year’s series has been particularly successful with its amount of competitors and great crowd support, and we are all really happy with how well the first round went,” he says. Entries were received as far as Ashburton and Reefton and are aged from as young as four-years. The next round will be held on May 29 at the Dillon’s Property (Avon Valley)Waihopai Valley.

The New Zealand Breakers’ triumph in the ANBL finals series decider against Cairns on Saturday capped off arguably the best performance by a New Zealand side in an Australian sporting competition. The fact no Kiwi side had cracked an Australian competition before the weekend just highlights how difficult these tournaments are for sports teams from this side of the Tasman. It is no secret the Aussies hate to see New Zealand sides do well in, let alone dominate, their premier competitions. During the New Zealand Warriors run to the NRL grand final in 2002, some die-hard fans held banners almost in protest at a New Zealand side featuring in their rugby league showpiece. Last year, Warriors coach Ivan Cleary labelled it a joke when winger Manu Vatuvei was left out of the 2010 Team of the Year at the Dally M Awards. This year, despite a record of 22 wins from 28 matches, the Breakers were snubbed at the end-of-season awards dinner, shortly after they were slammed for not attending the event scheduled only a couple of days out from their semi-final clash with Perth. The minor premiers picked up just one award with guard Kevin Braswell being named the league’s best sixth man. New Zealand teams have traditionally never feared well in trans-Tasman competitions. The Warriors have come close a few times, but never won, the NRL, our New Zealand soccer franchise has not made the final, and our netball teams have struggled in their trans-Tasman battles so far. The Breakers, like all New Zealand teams, had it all in front of them this year, not least the demand of travelling for nearly every second match. When all is said and done, the Breakers will happily take their title victory ahead of any individual awards. This one can’t be denied.

JP leaving his mark By Damian George When Gavin Kerr steps down from the role of educating Justices of the Peace (or JPs) in New Zealand, he will do so having left a substantial mark on the standard of training they now receive. The former Horowhenua College principal, who moved to Blenheim in 1998, has no immediate plans to relinquish the role, but says he will make way as soon as someone else puts their hand up. “I’ve really enjoyed the training side but there comes a time when it’s best to move on,” he says. “When someone else steps up, I’ll go.” During his ten years in the role, Gavin was able to play a major part in changing the level of professionalism now associated with the state-appointed officers. After 25 years of endeavour, Gavin, in partnership with the then associate minister of justice Clayton Cosgrove, implemented the Justices of the Peace Amendment Act in 2007. Brody, 20, and Ben, 18, have since been focusing their attention on obtaining the $6900 they each need to fund the trip to the UK. “We’re doing quite well. We’re looking on track but we’ve sill got another four grand to make up,” Brody says. A fundraising dinner was held at the Renwick Bowling Club last Wednesday, which was “a real hit”, and another one is planned for May 16 at Bamboo Garden. Brody says 100 people have already confirmed their attendance for the evening, which will auction off prizes including coffee tables made by Ben with the help of Max George Joiners and ITM, an Interislander Ferry package, and various other prizes donated by local businesses. The two have also been selling firewood since their selection was confirmed. Brody and Ben, who both took up refereeing at the age of 13, have four years experience officiating at national level, and have each controlled four national finals.
