Charity boxing event calling for participants Continued from page 1 Leading up to the event those who are selected will be given three months of training of ‘fight night’ and during this time they are encouraged to share their experiences via a social media page. The idea to host the charity boxing event began with Life Education trustee Jo McCormick who was looking for ways to fundraise for the trust. She had seen the event held successfully in other areas and thought it would be something ‘new and different’ for Marlborough. She then approached local boxing trainer Peter Warren to see if he would be involved. “I thought it was a good idea. The New Zealand Boxing Association have granted us to host the event based on the grounds that the proper rules and regulations are in place,” he says. Peter will be heavily involved in the matching process and will be provide the training. “Anyone can put their name forward and a panel carefully selects who takes part to make sure it’s fair and safe. “Once selected they will have one on one training with me then group training and I’ll be able to work in with

when suits each person. “The first month is always the hardest when you start the training and getting your co-ordination but the health benefits are great,” he says. Life Education trustee James Ryan says the event fits in well with the healthy lifestyle message of the trust. “Yes it’s boxing, but it’s an athletic competition that promotes fitness and health. “We will be encouraging each person to share their experiences throughout their training including photographs, reports on changes in attitude and body shape, fitness levels etc so the community can follow their progress,” he says. To make the event even more exciting, organisers will also be looking for some ‘friendly rivalry’ between companies and even industries. “Two wineries might like to put someone forward for bragging rights, or it can be teachers, auto firms... anyone really,” Peter says. Each boxer is required to secure a sponsor ($2500 + GST) and commit to a three to four month training programme through June, July and August.

Boxing coach Peter Warren, applicants Gina Botham and Kurt Lindsay, and Life Education trustee James Ryan. The inaugral ‘Fight for Life’ Marlborough event will raise money for the Life Education Trust.

Sponsors will have naming rights to their boxer, branding on their singlet and shorts and on the night, a ringside table for eight. The tickets for the event will go on sale closer to the time. The ‘Fight for Life’ Life Education

charity boxing event will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Applications for anyone interested in taking part can be collected from the Co-Operative Bank on Queen Street, Blenheim.

Mussels, sunshine and laughter By Celeste Alexander There was a really happy buzz about the Havelock Mussel Festival last Saturday as over 4000 people took in everything that was on offer. The sun shone, the breeze remained light and all around the festival there was laughter and chatting as people sat and relaxed, watched demonstrations or simply wandered about the many stall sites. Once again the mussel shucking drew an enthralled crowd as well as the solo competition. Angela Fredericks was named the winner of the solo and went on to attempt to crack her world record for opening 100 greenshell mussels. She came very close, however she still holds the record. Celebrity MasterChef winners from 2014,

sisters Karena and Kasey Bird pulled ‘a huge crowd and were outstanding’, according to event promoter Duncan Mackenzie. “It was interesting to hear from Chris Fortune, who has done the festival for quite a number of years that he had never seen the cooking marquee so full. Their first session saw every seat taken,” he says. Overall Duncan says he has received plenty of great feedback. “My major measuring stick is the feedback. This is my first year involved in the festival and we put in some new changes including layout and the programme, and I’m really thrilled to see what we proposed work very well. “It’s been really quite heartening to know we can deliver a good quality show and have people enjoy themselves,” he says.

Renwick water meeting Another meeting is to be held in Renwick at the community hall this evening from 7.30pm to discuss water meters and other issues. The Renwick Water Group hope to see as many people as possible there, with user charges options to be discussed and an update on funding shares for the water supply upgrade.

Marina recycling The big blue rubbish and recycling bins put into the Picton Marina for the convenience of Marlborough Sounds residents and holidaymakers just over a year ago are to be replaced by wheelie bins after the Easter holidays, because of noise and odour complaints, the Marlborough District Council says. Solid waste manager Alec McNeil says the high use of the blue bins showed there’s a need for some kind of rubbish facility so wheelie bins will be tried instead. It cuts out the recycling opportunity but the wheelie bins are covered and there should be less noise and odour with them.

Bar manager Paul Woodley pours a celebratory drink for Clubs of Marlborough president Gordon Herkt and CEO Lee Davis, who are preparing to host over 400 Club New Zealand delegates this weekend.

Clubs to welcome over 400 people tomorrow

Chlorine in water Marlborough District Council is warning Witherlea residents their water may smell of chlorine this week after the Wither Hills Reservoir was disconnected at the weekend for maintenance and reconnected to the town water supply early this week. Operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says that at the end of the maintenance work the reservoir’s walls and floor are sterilised with chlorine which is then thoroughly rinsed and flushed to waste. The reservoir will then be refilled with fresh water before being connected back to the supply. He says the water will be fresh and clear of chlorine, but some residents may notice a slight chlorine odour from their taps for a few days.

Conference brings delegates from all over for five day event By Celeste Alexander The arrival of over 400 people to Blenheim tomorrow heralds the beginning of a three-day AGM conference and expo hosted by the Clubs of Marlborough. The event is being held for the Clubs New Zealand and will see exhibitors displaying the latest in gaming technology and hospitality as well as internationally renowned chef Martin Bosley who will be working alongside the Clubs kitchen team to cater for a black tie conference dinner. “Martin is one of NZ’s finest

chefs, we are absolutely stoked to be having him here and working alongside our team. “He’s a huge fan of the heroic efforts of kiwi winemakers, farmers, fishermen and locally produced artisan crafted food, so he will be at home in Marlborough”, CEO Lee Davis says. “This is a huge event for the Clubs of Marlborough to be hosting.” In a reverse role, the Clubs will be renting the Convention Centre facilities for the conference and AGM.

“We last hosted the conference in 2009 and since then there have been some changes so we are excited to be showcasing what we do here and to welcome them to Marlborough,” he says. Among those attending are club delegates, managers, board members, exhibitors and sponsors who will spend a total of five days in the region. They will also be sampling ‘a taste of Marlborough’, Lee says. “We have added a flavour of our own under the north terrace by providing a taste of Marlborough

supported by a variety of local wineries, Prenzel and of course some freshly steamed Marlborough Mussels will be on offer. “We will also be proudly showcasing our catering abilities by hosting the inaugural black tie conference dinner for 250 delegates, entertained by a Jazz Band ‘The Wellington City Shake-’EmOn-Downers’. Approximately 315 clubs are affiliated to Clubs New Zealand which boasts of a combined membership of 280,000.

Blenheim’s bagpipers John McGirr, Cathy Hale, Nicole Ecklein and Brett McKeown are thrilled to achieve second place nationally as part of a Nelson-based pipe band. The New Zealand Pipe Bands Championship was held in Nelson 10 days ago, and the local pipers are very happy with the great results achieved. Nicole says the four are ‘absolutely elated!’ with their band being awarded second place nationally in both Grade 4 and Grade 2. “Our Pipe Major, Kate Cowin, has an amazing knack for bringing out the best in the team.” Brett plays for the Celtic Pipe Band Grade 2 corps, which has just celebrated its 10th

Many of the twelve bands they were up against have been playing or competing for decades. The New Zealand Pipe Bands Championship is held annually, with approximately 40 bands competing across four grades. Next year it will be held in Rotorua and the four Blenheim pipers intend to compete there. “Definitely. But we’ve got some hard work ahead of us between now and then!” says Nicole.

By Cathie Bell It has been a year since the ambulance bought with the bequest from the estate of Alan ‘Laddie’ Hope came into service, and St Johns are delighted with how well it is doing. From March last year to February this year, Laddie has made approximately 1965 trips. The ambulance made 191 call outs in one month, its highest number in one month. St John Marlborough manager Rod Hill says. The bequest made by Laddie Hope has had a tremendous impact of the community is enabling St John to provide a new, state of the art vehicle in which to make our patient transfers, Rod says. Alan ‘Laddie’ Hope died in September 2015, and left his 1960s house in Warwick Street to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to St John Marlborough and Hospice Marlborough. The house sold for $273,000, and St John used its share to buy a new ambulance.

THE FOR THE TOAST TOAST OF NZ FOR Mike Gardiner, Heinje Herkt, Jill Moorhouse, Nic Reddington and Danijel Duvnjak will be displaying and demonstrating electric transportation, tools and equipment at the Marlborough Earth Day Party on April 22.

Earth day party By Celeste Alexander Climate change is a hot topic among people in Marlborough as are the challenges associated with adopting low carbon technologies and reducing emissions, so a Blenheim man has set out to showcase the positive benefits with an event he has organised next month. Peter Deacon is particularly passionate about introducing people to the technology already available in Marlborough so has organised the inaugural ‘Marlborough Earth Day’ for Saturday, April 22 at the A&P Park in Blenheim. The event is timed to coincide with International Earth Day and the global march for Science, celebrated internationally that same day. “As New Zealand faces the challenge of transitioning from fossil fuels towards a carbon zero future, we must now reimagine and re-engineer our economy and our way of living to place lower demands on the planet’s resources,” he says.

The Earth Day Party will give the community, including families, business owners and community leaders to opportunity to learn about what technologies are available in Marlborough and what steps they can take to reduce emissions of carbon and other harmful waste products. Local businesses exhibit their products and hold demonstrations which will include solar, wind and hydro power, electric transportation, battery powered tools and garden equipment and even organic whole-foods. Supporting the event are AvantiPlus Blenheim owner Danijel Duvnjak, Mike’s Mowers and Chainsaws owner Mike Gardiner, Herkt Appliances owner Heinje Herkt and the local owners of Kiwi Clean Living Jill Moorhouse and Nic Reddington. The Marlborough Earth Day Party will run from 10am to 3pm and will include fun and entertainment for children.

Matt Gwynne finds sport is a universal language.

Rugby missionary returns By Cathie Bell Sport is like a universal language, Blenheim man Matt Gwynne says. Matt is home for a few months, in between stints overseas, where he has been working both as a Christian missionary and a sports physiotherapist. “I’ve been in France, for just over four years. I’m a missionary there, working for Youth With a Mission. As part of that, I’ve been helping in the refugee camps all through the Middle East and Africa. “You don’t have to be able to speak the language when you have the ball. It can be a language on its own – you can kick it, pass it, throw it, just smile at each other and that’s often enough.” Matt is back in New Zealand for three months, and will be spending some of that

time in Blenheim. He says his long-term vision is to start a sports academy in the south of France, providing rehabilitation time for people with injuries, as well as emotional and spiritual support for professional athletes, particularly rugby players from New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. “A lot of New Zealanders and Pacific Island people in a culture and environment they’re not used to, get lost. Many are from a religious background, very family oriented, so when they lose that they often lose direction and start losing contracts, family, meaning and purpose. “It snowballs. “As a physio, I love helping people, love talking to people, and missionary work is the same.”

Help finding family members Dear Ed, While I’ve visited New Zealand I have been thinking of ways to find contacts or distant family and wondered if your newspaper has had any others using this wide read paper for such a search. We have information of my Grandfather’s sister being in Blenheim in 1939 from UK, Ethel Kennedy married Mr. Lane at some point.

Children were: Ada Lane, Arthur Lane, Gerard Lane. Thank you for your assistance and would be so pleased to hear if these details can be published in some form to help the family tree grow. I am asking on behalf of my brother in-law in the UK. Best wishes Mrs Lynne Thomas lynnefthomas@tiscali.co.uk

Dear Ed, Firstly, thank you for your delightful and comprehensive people newspaper for Marlborough. Thank you for your excellent coverage of my presentation at Parliament, in relation and detail of our families’ and friends’ input to the improvements and efficiences of the ‘Queen Charlotte Walkway’. and family, a dedication to the availability of the then ‘Kenepuru walkway’ became a real dedication as we met so many folks walking to get away from serious setbacks in their lives. To drink in the beautiful clean air, bathe in the sunshine, and be themselves away on the tops of nowhere. Despite this being our private land, and our choice of usage, we were never ever consulted on the passage of bikes. It has been a huge insulting shock to have these imposed upon us and neighbouring givers like ourselves. Apparently the word track gave an open end. It was never ever discussed with me. Valuable youth Dear Ed, I have found myself asking this question. Does Marlborough value the young generation? We nurture our children through the pathway of education, encourage them to leave to broaden their horizons, for better career prospects, and gain life skills. But when they return, due to unaffordable housing rentals, high cost of living and student debt, what does Marlborough have to offer. Just browse the job advertisements, what is required but experience. So how is this obtained? We need to invest in this generation. What has happened to internships, graduate programmes, apprenticeships and work experience?

Sadly we have forgotten a few things along the way. We have all travelled down this path before, trying to get that first foot in the door to employment. The art of etiquette has been lost, acknowledging applications, face to face contact, the courtesy of replying, communicating of being unsuccessful, and giving some feedback. This generation has so much to offer, they embrace modern technology, engage in social media, willing to learn, seeking skills and knowledge, plus rejuvenate a community. So we need to be doing more to engage with this generation, as they will be our future community. F Jones Renwick

Margaret McHugh, mid-voyage in Dubai.

Margaret’s sixty days at sea... Margaret McHugh of Picton has never shied from a challenge. Here she talks to Glenise Dreaver about her life, and her 60 days as sole passenger aboard the mighty container ship the Alexander von Humboldt.

Not every woman would follow up a honeymoon in Skye with 60 days as the only passenger on a container ship sailing from Southampton to China. But Margaret is more than unusually independent. Husband Bill is also independent, a Scot who preferred to come back to Kippilaw House, their Picton home, awaiting her return. A couple for twenty years, they married last year in Scotland, five minutes drive from the original Kippilaw House where Bill’s childhood holidays were spent. The honeymoon over, Margaret spent five weeks in London with Glenn and Frances Hall who also have a home in the Sounds. The gourmet cook had a working holiday, researching high teas at top-end establishments including Fortnum and Mason, the fabled Cafe Royale, and the Dorchester. In the early seventies, she spent four years in hospitality there and in agency work in Europe. There was agency work in Piraeus in Greece for the US Sixth

Fleet and once a storm wrecked their tender. They were tossed into the Adriatic sea, rescued and taken aboard the mothership the Franklin D Roosevelt which she’d looked up

“Every ten steps, she stopped to admire the view.” at from the freezing water. “I decided I’d rather drown than climb up there.” But she climbed. Her engagement to a Greek man, met in a downstairs nightclub in Piraeus, brought its own drama. “My father was a Greek veteran. “He’d specifically warned me not to go to downstairs nightclubs or have anything to do with Greek men.” The end of the romance proved beyond her control. In July 1974, she was in Greece with him when a coup deposed the

military junta. Her fiancé warned her of danger. There was a ten-day curfew between 7pm and 7am and all airports and ports were totally closed. On day one, they were eating at a neighbour’s place when there was a knock downstairs. Nineteen-year-old Stalios, the student son of Anna their hostess, answered. He didn’t return. Anna found him in the doorway, throat slit from ear to ear. Her father sent the fare for an immediate return and ten days later, Margaret left for home as soon as the airport re-opened. For a girl from a Winton dairy farm it was a lot to take in though she says her background means it takes a bit to rock her boat. She does, however, admit to doubts at the bottom of the 88-steps up to the Alexander von Humboldt. ”I thought ‘I might have bitten off more than I can chew here’.” But a Filipino crewman shoul-

dered her 30kg bag and, legs buckling, led the way. The 398m ship, with 24 crew, carried 16,500 containers. Passenger facilities on the twoyear old vessel were ‘absolutely beautiful’. She took a Kindle bookreader, Sudoku, and craft materials. She also wrote half a cookbook and had her own galley area for making desserts and sweets for the crew. On day one there was anti-piracy training which included familiarising with the steel safe room. She later weathered 10 metre waves in a typhoon in the South China Sea by tucking herself in her bunk with bolsters from the other passenger rooms. Margaret recommends the experience to anyone who enjoys their own company and has a medical clearance, as there is no doctor on board. It was wonderful to get home though. “And Bill was very pleased to see me.”

Culvert celebrated By Cathie Bell Landowners the Kennedy family and earthworks business Fulton Hogan were toasted last week as the Te Whanau Hou Grovetown Lagoon Restoration Project thanked them for their contribution to the next stage of the loop walkway around the lagoon. The Kennedy family allows public access for the walkway around the lagoon, and Fulton Hogan built a substantial culvert to ensure easy walking from one side to the other over a small creek flowing into the lagoon. Family members Jamie, Matthew, Lynne, and Rob Kenndy, and grandsons Jacob and Ethan and two Fulton Hogan representatives were invited to a small

gathering and thanked by lagoon project chairman Tim Barton, who says the contribution from both needs to be recognised. He says Fulton Hogan made the culvert ‘much wider and better’ than anticipated. “That’s great, thank you.” The Grovetown Lagoon Loop Track is a 4 kilometre circuit track around the outside of the lagoon. Tim says the development of the pathway, thanks to landowners like the Kennedys and companies like Fulton Hogan, means people can access the lagoon better, enjoy the environment, and see more birds in that environment than they have before. “This will be helpful…. I think it’s something rather special.”

Finding a new home By Cathie Bell Returning to her native country of Germany brought home to Birte Flatt that Blenheim is now her home, leading her to take up citizenship. Birte is one of the 24 people granted citizenship at the ceremony at the council chambers last Friday afternoon, with colourful dress ranging from gorgeous saris and kilts, to multicoloured shirts and orange clogs. She says she has lived here for 25 years, but a visit to Germany made her realise ‘nowadays I’m

much more aligned here’. “Even though I love my family over there dearly, my life is over here. “I think New Zealand stands out as a really lucky country at a time like this. “It’s a reason to affirm that I’m really grateful and happy to be here.” Birte was accompanied to the citizenship ceremony by her daughter Miriama Flatt, who has returned to Blenheim after six years away, and her partner Steffan Browning.

Work begins on Ohau Point slip Work commenced this week at Ohau Point, to clear an estimated 110,000 cubic metres of rock and debris from State Highway One to Kaikoura. Ohau Point is one of the biggest and most complex of the 10 major slips north of Kaikoura, caused by last November’s earthquake, Transport Minister Simon Bridges says. Helicopter sluicing crews and specialist abseilers have been working long hours for

several weeks to clear loose material from the site, and a remote-controlled excavator is working on the north side of the slip because it is too unstable to allow workers access safely, he says. “People will begin to see some very visible progress in coming weeks. “Work is now happening on all sections from Blue Duck Valley Road to north of Waipapa Bay.”

Two year-old Jacob Kennedy enjoyed throwing stones into the water from a new culvert Fulton Hogan has built on his grandparents’ land alongside the Grovetown Lagoon, while the gathering toast the culvert.

Is your bra drIvIng you crazy? • Beauty Bra has no stretch straps • Straps do not fall down • Full support from beneath the bust eliminating most of the weight on the shoulders • No under wires • All you ever wanted in a bra – comfort and support • Free, no obligation private, personal fittings and consultations Your Beauty Bra Specialist,

The Beauty Bra makes a great sports bra too. So supportive to wear especially during netball and horse riding. There is so little movement of the bust and all without the flattening that most sports bras have. All these benefits lead to a healthier breast and the strain is taken off the neck and shoulders. The bra also ensures your clothing fits properly by enhancing your figure, she says. “The Beauty Bra really does slim the fuller figure and gives definition to the dainty figure too.” There are 224 sizes available in the Beauty Bra, which makes it simple to find the exact fit for every figure type. “When I measure a lady for a bra fitting, her band size and cup size are taken into account so we get the exact size combination for her.” Jeanette will be available to fit your new bra during the following weekends: 25 & 26 March and 1 & 2 April at 4 Balmoral Mews, Blenheim. To make an appointment for a free no obligation fitting and consultation, phone 5779115 and leave a clear message. Bookings are essential as places are limited.

After becoming a massage therapist and thinking about the overall health of the body Jeanette could see the benefits of a good fitting bra without underwire. So after training to become a Shape Wear Specialist, Jeanette is now passing on the benefits to other women. The Beauty Bra does not have stretch straps, under wires or shoulder strap pull – just amazing comfort and support. The quality fabrics and manufacturing techniques used in the Beauty Bra means they just last and last. In fact they last about 3 times longer than other bras. Jeanette says up to 70 per cent of women wear the wrong size bra and when coupled with under wires, impedes lymphatic drainage. “Your bust must be lifted to allow for good circulation, not squashed to the rib cage or under the arm. The breast needs to be supported from underneath; not suspended from the shoulders. Most of the weight is taken on the Beauty Bra’s inbuilt shelf, which lifts and supports the delicate breast tissue into the cup area, so there is very little weight on the shoulders at all.”

Giant pumpkin surprise The group of visiting British journalists with Helen Bownass at the far left.

British journos try out delights By Cathie Bell Marlborough is ‘really aspirational’ for readers in Britain, a group of British journalists in the region last week say. A group of six British journalists from publications as diverse as the Telegraph and the Sunday Times to House and Garden and Stylist magazines on a Tourism New Zealandorganised promotion were hosted by Destination Marlborough. They stayed at the Marlborough Lodge, toured the Sounds with the Marlborough Tour Company, and went to Cloudy Bay Wines and Wither Hills to try wine activities and ate at Arbour during their stay. Stylist magazine entertainment director Helen Bownass says Marlborough is ‘absolutely stunning’. The tranquillity and ‘wellness’ of the region is attractive to her readers, she says, many who are professional women very interested in the provenance of high quality food and drink, and ‘mindfulness’, which Marlborough embodied. “I can’t get over how tranquil the vines are, it’s quite hypnotising.” Tourism New Zealand’s acting chief executive Brighid Kelly said Tourism New Zealand is focusing on promoting regions as a priority for the next few years.

“We want to encourage more tourists to visit more parts of the country so much more of New Zealand can benefit from increasing tourism numbers and spending.” It is running more region-specific campaigns as well as growing the number of visitors such as cyclists, golfers and backpackers who already visit more regions, she says. “Tourism New Zealand is also running a campaign at the moment to encourage more Chinese visitors to come to Wellington and the top of the South Island, by encouraging travel agents to sell itineraries to promote these regions. Marketing campaigns will begin later in the year. “Marlborough is a great region to promote with its world class wines, the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, marine wildlife and great weather. Tourism New Zealand is using Marlborough imagery as part of our wine and food promotion for this year.” Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston says the visit is part of the regional tourism organisation’s media programme, aimed at influencing key markets. “Britain is a strong growth market for Marlborough.”

HUGE

By Celeste Alexander Blenheim resident Colin Hudson began growing pumpkins in his small garden patch late last year and is surprised with how big they have become. He pla nted the ‘At la nt ic G ia nt’ pumpkin variety in November as he has always wanted ‘to try them out’, but had no idea they would grow so big. “I didn’t give them any special attention and they grew beside my veranda, so I was quite surprised,” he says. He harvested them last Thursday and says he doesn’t know what he will do with them yet. “They won’t be any good for eating so I might give them to a mate for his animals,” he says.

MARLBOROUGH’S NEWEST BAR & EATERY

Restaurant revamp a hit with diners

MARLBOROUGH’S ONLY AWARD-WINNING SIGNAGE COMPANY

Proud to have designed & created signage for the new Taylor’s Bar and Eatery 50 Grove Road, Blenheim Phone 578 3666 www.bbsigns.co.nz

The latest addition to the Blenheim dining scene has enjoyed its first few months since being rebranded and having its menu overhauled. The Taylor’s Bar & Eatery located upstairs at the Clubs of Marlborough boasts a complete new image from its interior design through to the addition of its own bar and redesigned balcony dining space. Clubs CEO Lee Davis says with the Taylors Bar & Eatery he hoped to offer a new aesthetic by introducing products that were exclusive to the restaurant, and not offered elsewhere in the Clubs. In fact, this has been taken one step further but sourcing products exclusive to Marlborough, including the brand of prime beef sourced for the menu. “We wanted to create a dining experience that was completely different to what the Clubs already offers. “It’s been designed to accommodate the percentage of our membership that just want a quiet place to enjoy a casual drink and a bite to eat, or sit down for a meal with friends and family. “We want to make sure that we are catering for all of our members and visitors to the clubs,” he says. “We have purpose built wine barrel bar

down meals. “Both areas have their own menus, but if people are really wanting a Clubs meal to eat in the comfort of Taylor’s then that’s fine also,” he says.

Dining in the main seating area, people have the choice of entrees, mains and desserts that have been designed in consultation with the kitchen team and management. Entrees can include baked bread served on a wooden board with local RSA extra virgin olive oil, home made dukkah and hummus, through to seafood chowder, prawn cocktails and gourmet chicken balls with pecorino cheese. These are light, flavoursome and perfect to share in a group or to start your dining experience with. In the mains, there is a tantalising array of beef, chicken, seafood, lamb and pork to choose from. The beef has been sourced exclusively for the Taylor’s Bar & Eatery and is Hereford Prime Beef that is 100 per cent naturally

aged, grass fed and ‘GE free’. Select your favourite cut from sirloin, ribeye or fillet and choose a sauce to complement your steak, including sauteed mushroom and blue cheese, creamy pepper and mustard, mozzarella cheese with mexican spices and garlic and herb butter. In the seafood there is salmon, hoki and Marlborough mussels on offer as well as a Spaghetti Sicilian pasta dish that is generously topped with prawns. While these are tempting, don’t look past the pork ribs, lamb shank or Taylor chicken. Each are just as tempting as the others and are served with the Taylor’s salad and a choice of rustic house fries, potato bake or rice pilaf. Book your next dinner date, group or function with Taylor’s Restaurant or simply relax in the bar and outside balcony area.

The one exclusive beer that the bar offers is Heineken on tap, Clubs CEO Lee Davis says. “We are one of two outlets in Blenheim offering Heineken and Heineken Light on

WINTER 17 0 2 WARMTH and Stack and stabilise wood Check repair ahead of piles for safety winter Many people may have already cut and stacked their firewood for winter which is only a few months away. However the cooler weather is starting to creep in so, to avoid being caught out without firewood, start organising for dry wood to be delivered, and even get some wet to store for next year. For those needing to stack and protect their firewood for winter, here are some tips for keeping it safely stacked and dry while making the most of the storage area. - Cut pieces into triangular lengths. Split wood into triangular pieces as it stacks better that way. Triangular cuts prevent otherwise round pieces from rolling off a pile and injuring someone. - Support the woodpile. Again, without proper support, pieces can fall off the woodpile and injure whoever is accessing

Stack your firewood safely and correctly to maximise storage.

it. Use sound, heavy items to support each end of a woodpile.

- Expose the woodpile to air and, if possible, sunlight. Some

people might not want to leave a woodpile exposed to the elements, but on the other hand, sunlight helps to cure wood, making it drier for eventual use. A good common ground is to cover the woodpile but expose it to sunlight from the sides. - Get the woodpile off the ground. Those who build wood storage racks higher than ground level have much better results. That’s because wood that is in contact with the ground can suffer from fungal growth, mould or rotting. That’s not to mention the variety of animals who might seek to make their homes there. - Keep the woodpile far away from buildings. With any woodpile there is the risk of fire. When wood piles are too close to a building, they can escalate a blaze if they catch fire. Keep the woodpile about six metres away from homes and buildings.

Whether you have a new or old woodburner, unless it’s been maintained or checked recently, it could pose a fire hazard. Now it is more important than ever to have your woodburner checked or repaired, Peter Cairns, owner of Heating Marlborough advises. “Older woodburners require regular checks as they were installed by older standards, and newer woodburners need maintenance to ensure they perform as efficiently as possible.” If you are wanting to have a new woodburner installed, but are unsure of the permit process with the council and which model best suits, call in and see Peter at his Grove Road showroom. “We can take care of the permit process for you, as well as match you with the ideal woodburner,” he says. Another benefit to dealing with Heating Marlborough, is that your woodburner will be installed by a ‘certified installer’. “Firstly, a quality installation is important to your woodburner’s performance and safety. “Then there’s the warranty. Manufacturers recommend that a certified installer is used otherwise the warranty may be void, so it’s good to be aware of this,” he says.

Clean burning wood While spring and summer are the best times to purchase firewood, there will still be people who need it. This poses the risk of not being able to find dry wood that will burn clean and efficiently, as well as it costing more. Only burn dry, well-seasoned wood. Green wood cools the fire and creates smoke that adds to air pollution. It’s best to purchase in larger quantities and on average to keep a woodburner going most evenings and weekends through winter, you may need at least 10 cubic metres of wood. Softwoods and medium-

density woods like pine and macrocarpa dry in around six to 12 months but burn rapidly. This means regularly adding wood to keep a cosy blaze going. ‘Old man pine’ is from trees aged 30 years or more. It’s denser than ordinary pine and contains more resin, so it burns for longer and puts out more heat. Hardwoods such as gum and manuka make a better fire as they have greater heat content and burn slowly. But freshly felled hardwoods can take up to 18 months to dry. When you do purchase firewood, be sure to keep a

receipt, and make sure it’s dated with the supplier’s name and address, the type of wood, quantity delivered and price. If you are not sure if your wood is ready to burn, remember that firewood should have less than 25 percent moisture. You can test it by throwing a small piece onto hot glowing coals. If it catches fire on the top and sides within one minute, it’s dry enough to burn well. Moisture meters can also be purchased which let you check the moisture content of firewood you are about to buy or burn.

WINTER 17 0 2 WARMTH Curtains make a statement, keep in heat There’s a huge variety of curtains and how they are designed, what material they are made of, and how they are hung, can make a huge difference in how they help to retain inside warmth. Glass is a good conductor of heat. So in the winter when temperatures inside are higher than out, heat escapes through glass. Double glazing is required for windows installed in most new builds and renovations. But when retrofitting double glazing is not an option, curtains can be an effective way to retain heat. Curtains don’t have to be

Summer not a ‘fizzer’, stats show

Say NO to salmon farm expansion plans Hanneke Kroon, a Kenepuru and Central Sounds Residents’ Association representative on the Marlborough Salmon Working Group, explains why she is submitting in opposition to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ proposal to move up to six salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds. King Salmon has been plotting with the government to acquire new salmon farms in the Sounds. The aim of this Ministry for Primary Industries plan, dressed up as ‘salmon-farming relocation’, is in fact a massive salmon farming expansion plan in the entrance of the Pelorus Sound. This ministry plan is for another FIVE salmon farms and comes on top of the two new farms that are starting up now. It will mean seven large salmon farms clogging up the Waitata Reach, the entrance into the Pelorus. From pristine waters two years ago, it will change within a few years to the highest concentration of salmon farms in the country with pollution comparable to the worst of our rivers. With every flood tide, the ocean water from the Cook Strait will mix with the organic waste from these seven salmon farms and transport it to every bay and corner in the Pelorus Sound. This will lead to an increase in algal blooms, which could do great harm to recreational fishing and the mussel farming industry. We know from the 2015 State of the Environment report, that the Marlborough Sounds biodiversity is NOT in good shape, with fewer fish, less species, sedimentation and biosecurity problems. What the Marlborough Sounds need is new marine reserves, NOT new salmon farms.

Hanneke Kroon, Kenepuru and Central Sounds Residents’ Association.

How do we achieve that? First step is to send in a submission. The Kenepuru and Central Sounds Resident Association have prepared a short submission at http://kcsra.org.nz/documents/ NewSalmonFarms/170306-SubmissionForm. pdf. Send it in before 5 pm on Monday March 27 to: aquaculture.submissions@mpi.govt.nz or post to: Salmon Farm Relocation, Ministry for Primary Industries, Private Bag 14, Port Nelson 7042.

By Cathie Bell Summer temperatures failed to reach the sizzle of previous years, but the season wasn’t a ‘fizzer’, according to the scientist who collates Blenheim’s weather data. Plant and Food scientist Rob Agnew, who collects weather data for the Blenheim Meteorological station located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre, says there has been a perception that the summer of 2016-17 has been a bit of a fizzer. Certainly, no day topped 30 degrees celsius this summer, he says. “Blenheim receives relatively few days when the mercury reaches 30°C or greater. “Further inland, the maximum temperatures are slightly higher. “This is often seen in the daily maximums reported on TV, which come from the Woodbourne met station. “The Woodbourne maximums are invariably hotter than in Blenheim. “Conversely Woodbourne often records a lower minimum temperature than Blenheim.” However, if you looked at the number of days with temperatures over 25 degrees in the 90 or 91 days of ‘official summer’ from 1 December to 28 or 29 February, this year’s summer in Marlborough was ‘ok’, he says. This summer had 29 of 90 days over 25 degrees, down from the previous summer’s 34 and the one before that’s 36, but up from 2013-2014 summer’s

Plant and Food scientist Rob Agnew

22 out of 90 days. Rob says the temptation is just to compare this summer with last summer. The fact that last summer recorded above average temperatures in January and well above average temperatures in February 2016, probably made this summer seem rather mediocre, he says. However, most people have probably long forgotten that the start of last summer, December 2015 was actually cool. “One slight annoyance of this past summer was high wind-run in January 2017. “Marlborough has experienced very few windy months over recent years, so when we get one it is especially noticeable.”

In the jungle with Don, fallen comrade from Victor 3 Company Victor 3 company veterans gathered in Blenheim last weekend to remember their service in Vietnam and to remember their fallen comrades, including Blenheim’s Don Bensemann. Cathie Bell talked with two of them. Lenny Ormsby and Bob Davies served together almost 50 years ago, but the bonds still run deep. The men were in Victor 3 company, which served in the Vietnam War from May 1968 to May 1969. The company held a reunion in Blenheim last weekend, with 43 veterans attending, and holding a memorial service to company member Blenheim man Don Bensemann who was killed in action. Bob says he and Don were both out of action with malaria, and returned to the front line together. Don was killed the next day. Leonard was lead scout for the squad all three were in, and he has the distinction of surviving four ambushes with what the Americans serving at the same time thought was an eerie jungle sense. They tried to take him to the United States for interrogation about how his jungle sense worked, but senior officers stopped that, he says. Lenny puts it down being raised in the Hawkes Bay

countryside, where he did a lot outside. “Everyone has these skills, what you learn as a Kiwi kid in the bush.” The Vietnamese jungle was similar, he reckons. “The animals are different, but it speaks to you, it talks to you.” But on the day he evaded his first ambush, the jungle was silent – ‘it didn’t seem right to me’. He stopped the squad just before a jungle clearing, and the Viet Cong set off the ambush early. A bullet missed Lenny by a centimetre, he reckons. He dropped to the ground behind an anthill and it was ‘all on’. It was said that you never survive an ambush as a lead scout, but Lenny survived three, and an earlier one in Borneo when serving there. “I’m still here, a bit wobbly, but I’m still here.” One of his officers said he was lucky, Lenny says, ‘but luck is a matter of fractions of an inch’. That ability and the action they all went through built up the trust amongst the soldiers. Lenny says the friends he had back then are still his friends today. “I only see them every couple of years, but it’s like the years have gone.” Bob Davies and Leonard Ormsby served together in the Vietnam War.

No wins but marks made by boxers By Celeste Alexander A fighting squad from a Blenheim boxing gym represented really well at the Canterbury Boxing Championship at the weekend, and despite having no wins it provided valuable experience, coach Peter Warren says. The squad of 11 from the Warrior Warren’s Boxing Gym fought last Friday and Saturday nights. Not all were successfully matched, Peter says, but were on hand to support their team mates. “What happened was four of the fighters, Amelia Burrough, Brodie Lobb, Karlos Gemmell, Flynn Struthers and Nicole Wilkinson were unopposed in their weight divisions so technically they are title holders in their divisions. “Nicole, Flynn and Karlos however were match fixed in other divisions,” he says. Flynn ‘fiercely’ fought his competitor, a young fighter from Invercargill who had had six previous fights. “This was the best I’ve ever seen Flynn fight, he did exceptionally well but ended up losing on points. Karlos (12), the youngest of the squad to be match fixed, went in the ring

with a 14-year-old and was ‘clearly outmatched’ but still fought well. “He stood his ground, fought aggressively and never backed down but was outclassed and the ref stood in half way and stopped the fight,” Peter says. As for Nicole (14), Peter says the fight of the night went to her. “The highlight... the team fought really well for Blenheim but Nicole would have been the fight of the night. It was all go from the first bell and they had the crowd up on their feet. It was Nicole’s first fight and her opponent already had a fight behind her so I’m really proud of her,” Peter says. Others from the squad who fought were Peter Nielson and Cam Carmichael. “Peter, in my opinion, I thought won it easy with the number of hits he got in but the judges saw it differently. “As for Cam, he was way ahead on points but a controversial overhead right hit stopped him in the first round,” Peter says. Now back home the squad is preparing for the next event, the South Island Championship held around Queen’s Birthday weekend as well as some fights in between.

Nicole Wilkinson was part of the 11 strong Blenheim boxing squad that competed at the Canterbury Champs at the weekend. Coach Peter Warren says Nicole’s match was easily ‘the fight of the night’ .

Fish & Game is reminding game bird hunters to stake their claim for their favourite maimai or duck shooting stand before 10am on April 9, with the start of the season on May 6. Hunters with an existing maimai who have already purchased a new 2017-18 game bird licence are able to stake their claim to the maimai any time before 10am on April 9. Other hunters wanting to stake their claim over an unclaimed maimai for the first time must wait until after 10am on that date. To reclaim your spot for the upcoming season you first need to buy your 2017-18 Game Bird Licence, which contains your claim tag. The new season licences went on sale on March 16.
