Gold for Judo By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim Judo instructor Dave Foley is over the moon after winning a gold medal at the New Zealand Open Judo Championships on Labour weekend. The 62-year-old First Dan black belt was Marlborough’s only representative competing at the annual event, taking out the gold in the ‘legends’ class. “It was my goal to bring back a gold medal,� he smiles. In total this year Dave has won

three gold medals and one silver from several other Judo events, but this event was “the biggest and best yet�, he says. “The standards were really high with around 200-300 judo competitors, it was definitely a privilege to be there.� It has been 20-years since Dave competed at a NZ open championship but he says it was a great feeling to be competing amongst the country’s best. “Not many are still competing at my age, but I am already

training for next year’s event,� he laughs. Another accomplishment to add to Dave’s list was the recent medal haul won by two of his students at the Central District Closed Judo Championships on Sunday. “A huge congratulations to Selina McLagan and Andrew McMahon who fought well at the event, and to Cameron Brooks and Ben Cohen who won gold. They faced tough competition but did well to come away with gold,� he says.

After being postponed due to bad weather in September, the festival kicks off in usual style at the Geisen Sports Centre and Recreation grounds between 11am and 3pm. With more space at the sports grounds, there will be loads of static displays and thrilling demonstrations as well as food, music, entertainment and of course – wheels, wheels and more wheels. And if that is not enough, the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade will have their station open throughout the festival with a range of activities and demonstrations. Renwick School is providing a huge range of food including lamb on a spit, BBQ’s, an ice cream wagon, candy floss, hotdogs and chips. Entry into the festival is a gold coin donation or $5 per family. We’re not a dumping ground By Damian George. A Salvation Army volunteer worker is angered and frustrated at persistent dumping of rubbish outside the store. Les Rogers, a volunteer truck driver, arrived at work on Monday morning to find old furniture items lying around the shop, which appeared to be discards from a garage sale. “It took half an hour to load it all on the truck, then I had to go down to the dump,� he says. “So I spent 45 minutes cleaning up

someone else’s rubbish before I could start working. And it’s happening every weekend.� Last Tuesday, a similar incident resulted in a trip to the dump which cost $120. “I just feel so upset that people are using us for a dump. They dont want to go out to the dump themselves, they just say ‘leave it to the sallies, they’ll dump it for us’.� “I just feel so bloody angry about it that I wanted to do something about it and let people know what’s going on.�

By Celeste Lodewyk. The honour of being the first baby born in the new maternity ward at Wairau Hospital went to little Kruz Charlie Lockwood who arrived at Monday, 1:03 in the morning . Much to the delight of parents Tahlia DeBoo and Billy Lockwood Kruz held his arrival off until the opening of the new maternity ward. “We had a look through at the open day last Tuesday and after seeing how

great the new maternity ward was, I wanted to hold off labour until I could get in,� Tahlia laughed. “Luckily Kruz waited until his due date,� Billy added. One observation the couple made was how spacious the new birthing rooms were. “They are much bigger than the previous ones and had all the necessary equipment setup in the room, unlike the old rooms,� Tahlia said.

“As new parents it really gave us peace of mind to know that if anything went wrong, everything was close at hand.� Billy said. Car yard’s days could be numbered

After years of trying, a local car dealer may finally have his wish of displacing an unlicensed car yard granted. Phil Brown, of Phil Brown motors, has been pushing the council for “at least three or four years� to remove the numerous vehicles for sale on Grove Road which advertise free and without licence. Marlborough mayor Alastair Sowman says he is in favour of bringing an end to

the operation, although it is not entirely in his control. “The problem is we [Marlborough District Council] don’t own the land - it’s owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency,� he says. “But I will certainly be giving them a strong indication we want to see that area tidied up. “It has a major impact on car dealers, who

have to have a licence, which is unfair.� Mr Sowman says he has already spoken with Transport New Zealand about the issue, and will be meeting with Marlborough Roads to discuss alternatives for the area. “In the past, councils were reluctant to act because they said ‘if people aren’t selling their cars there, they’ll be selling them somewhere else’.

“Now we’ve got a real reason to remove it - we want to tidy up the wole area with the focus on the new “i-site� going in there and now with the Rugby World Cup as well. “It’s grown to such an extent now that it’s just about a commercial activity.� Mr Brown says he would welcome the move and is encouraged changes are being talked about.

Hybrid taxi on road By Damian George.

Barbara Ryan from Marlborough Taxis is very happy with the decision to operate a hybrid vehicle in their fleet.

A local couple has offered Marlburians a greener way to get around the town, with the introduction of Blenheim’s first Hybrid taxi. Terry and Barbara Ryan, who work for Marlborough Taxis, bought the Toyota Prius at the end of September and have had it on the road since early October. While the cleaner emissions were a significant spin-off of the vehicle, it was fuel economy which was the driving force behind the purchase. “The attraction for us is keeping operating costs as low as possible,� Mr Ryan says. “We had another toyota and

we decided we could either kill it or have it as a back-up car. “The time had come for us to consider what we could upgrade to. Energy costs aren’t going to go down.� The results of the investment are already justifying the decision, with the Ryans’ fuel costs dropping by close to 40 per cent. However, the vehicle is not an instant money generator for everyone, he says. “We are in a unique position in that we operate two drivers so the car is always in use. “Because we are double shifting, we are getting a lot of revenue off that car. If it was for a single shift, it would be more expensive.�

In addition to travelling nearly 100 kilometres on just 4.6 litres of petrol, the vehicle also offers a cleaner way to travel, something which impresses Blenheim city councillor Steffan Browning. “I think it’s a great move,� he says. “I have to travel a lot due to my work and when I have the option I always choose a green cab. Having that here now in Blenheim is a very positive thing. Mr Ryan says, unlike main centres such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, customers are not able to request the hybrid taxi at this stage.

Grove Road Cars Ravaged By Teenager The controversial unlicensed Grove Road car yard was in the spotlight for a different reason on Friday night, when a 16-year-old unemployed man went on a window-smashing spree, stole items and caused further damage to the cars, police say. He is accused of smashing windows of four cars parked in the yard, breaking into three of them to sit in the passenger seat, and stealing a gas canister from a portable stove in one of them. He is also accused of ripping the handbrake and clutch from one vehicle, which caused it to roll forward. He was arrested by police after he was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a car holding the stolen item.

Life lessons

Bible Answer Taylor Pass Road is said to be named after Joseph Taylor, a master gunsmith originally from Yorkshire. It seems he was first Nelson-based, but local historian John Orchard said Taylor was believed to have been the first blacksmith in Blenheim, pre-1859, when it was still known as ‘The Beaver’. He said the replica blacksmith shop in Brayshaw Park carries the sign ‘Joseph Taylor’. H.A.H. Insull’s book, ‘Marlborough Place Names’, states that Joseph is also believed to have assisted William Budge, a surveyor, in his work in Marlborough. Insull says the naming of the Taylor River and Taylor Pass Road came about after an expedition where Joseph came upon a band of wild boars which “treed� him overnight. Next morning, he found they had beaten a track all round the tree. This incident became very well known, leading to the naming of both the river and the pass. Joseph is reported to have lost an arm during the explosion of a cannon at an early Nelson regatta, and an eye to a piece of flying firewood but, while possibly accident-prone, he appears to have been a man of indomitable spirit. His grandson, A. W. Taylor, was for many years superintendent of the Blenheim Fire Brigade and Mr Orchard said the late Captain Noel Taylor from Blenheim said he was a grandson of Joseph the blacksmith. It’s been an Honour By Celeste Lodewyk A fundraising dinner at Bamboo Garden Restaurant was held recently for the Hocquard family whose two-year old daughter Honor was this year diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disorder. Organised by Blenheim woman Erica Sprosen, the dinner included the live auction of several items donated by local businesses which raised more than $5000. A number of fundraisers for Honor have been run this year and to date, Honor’s mother Kelly says the community has raised around $11,000. “I am still blown away by the generosity that has been shown

Solar Floor Heating Solar under floor heating provides homes with gentle background heat by using the thermal energy collected in the roof circuit and then circulated to a floor circuit to warm a hard-fill and concrete floor. The thermal energy produced is released from the floor into the home. For best performance, a large north facing, dark coloured steel roof is required as a collection area, with a minimum pitch of 20 degrees. The greater the pitch, the greater the performance. Aesthetics A solar under floor system is totally hidden. The only visible component is the control system, which is fitted behind a pre-finished cover. This is normally fitted into the garage, laundry, hot water cupboard or wardrobe.

Health The benefits to you and your family are significant: • There is less condensation on walls and windows due to a lower heat differential at the windowpane, which results in a drier and healthier home. • The dry floor helps to inhibit the growth of dust mites which can affect asthma and allergy sufferers. Convection currents and draughts are minimised resulting in lower dust levels in the house. • Cleaner air due to no dangerous gases or vapours being released. Solar water heating - is it right for you? The design and location of your house determine how easy it is to have solar water heating installed, and how well the system performs. You’ll need a section of roof that: • faces north (or close to it) • has good, all year-round sun • is large enough to accommodate collector panels, which usually

means roughly 1m2 for each person in the house • is near the hot water tank location if possible • can carry the extra load of a solar water heating system (check with a builder) In some situations it is may be possible to locate the solar collectors (panels) on the ground rather than on your roof. What type of system is right for your home? The overall efficiency of a system depends on the performance of each component and how well they are matched together as a system. In frost-prone areas you’ll need to ensure your system has suitable frost protection. This is important as otherwise the water or fluid could freeze in the solar collectors. Retailers typically offer packaged solar water heating systems which have been designed so that each component is appropriately sized and optimized so the whole system works well together.

There is a great deal involved in managing a house-building project, including major renovation projects. Whether you are managing the project yourself, or leaving it all to someone else, the main tasks include:

• Getting building consents (and resource consents if necessary).

Improving the lives of those suffering from diabetes is one of the main focuses for this year’s Diabetes Awareness Week, running November 15-19. This year Diabetes Marlborough has organised something a bit different. Rather than street collecting, there will be a large raffle held in the foyer of the Clubs of Marlborough. On a fun note, Diabetes Marlborough will also be hosting a ten pin bowling competition which will include some great prizes for the winners. This too will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough. “Everyone is encouraged to come along and have a go, it’s going to be a great week,� says Diabetes Marlborough president Kay Murch. With all of their awareness week activities being held at the Clubs of Marlborough, there will be a Healthy Dining promotion run in the restaurant as well as diabetes testing available for people at risk of Type 2 Diabetes. “We want to reward those who make healthy food choices when having a meal at the Clubs of Marlborough. To enter the draw for a $100 Taylor Restaurant voucher, simply choose a meal for the healthy choice options - it’s that easy,� says Kay. More than 60 years combined experience Been in an accident and need panel repairs? Shaun and Trudy Forbes of Forbes Panel & Alignment have a qualified team of panel repairers and can service customers of all insurance companies. “We take the dent out of accident,� says Shaun. Both Shaun and Trudy have automotive backgrounds and say it was their passion for the industry which encouraged them to start their own business. “Plus we wanted to create a future for our kids, we are very family orientated,� Trudy says.

They purchased the business in April 2003 and set up in Grove Road, before moving to their current premises at Sutherland Terrace and expanding the workshop team. Fabian, a wheel alignment technician uses the John Beam four-wheel alignment machine to service light vehicles. In the workshop Shaun, Luke, and Bob specialise in panel beating, doing all insurance work, all types of rust repair including warrant of fitness repairs, plastic welding, fibre glass repairs and full panel repairs on all

types of vehicles. “You name it, we do it,� Shaun says. Forbes Panel & Alignment has two courtesy cars available for customers while their own cars are being repaired. What is more, the team goes out of its way to take the hassle out of panel repairs by offering a pick up and delivery service. “Our team member Bob also lives in Picton so he can offer a quote, pickup and delivery service, it’s just another way we try to take the stress away from the customer,� Shaun says.

3 Bears re-opens with new owners

3 BEARS: Andy and Adele Joslin have purchased the Renwick cafe and will be re-opening this Saturday.

By Celeste Lodewyk The 3 Bears CafĂŠ in Renwick has just been purchased by former Mudhouse Village owners Andy and Adele Joslin, and re-opens this weekend. The couple first approached previous owner Rata Harper five weeks ago before taking over the lease. The many “exciting new changesâ€? currently being made to the cafĂŠ will be on show this Saturday as the cafĂŠ re-opens to the public. Andy and Adele say after seeing the opportunity arise they jumped at the chance to take on

a new challenge. “We love Renwick, the cafĂŠ is in a great location and has great support from the community,â€? Adele says. “We have an exciting new menu, some structural changes to the cafĂŠ and fresh ideas, we can see it being a great success,â€? Andy adds. Andy and Adele who are originally from the UK previously owned the Mudhouse Village (now known as Vines Village) on Rapaura Road. They are also in the process of getting an on-license to open three to four nights per week for wine, beer and nibbles.

Picton Children Star In Own Cooking Show By Damian George Travelling to Wellington to cook with renowned New Zealand chef Al Brown and film a national television advertisement was how two local children filled their days last weekend. Picton sisters Ella and Lily Bartholomew, aged 7 and 6 respectively, won the grand prize of the Persil Have a Go Competition, organized by Al Brown to encourage kids to get

in the kitchen. Contestants were able to cook recipes and post them on the competition website, before a winner was drawn at random. The pair’s spaghetti bolognese, which they cooked with the help of their mum Lindsey, also won the weekly prize - a Persil cooking pack - voted for by the public. A league of his own By Damian George Former Cantabrian Shaun Tipene enjoyed his week-long visit to Blenheim so much, he decided to stay. But there is just one thing missing from his newly acquired lifestyle - there is no rugby league. As a league referee in Christchurch for the past five years, Mr Tipene has taken it upon himself to get the sport going in Blenheim. “Being heavily involved with league through all levels, it’s something I thought was worth pursuing,� he says. Mr Tipene has big plans for the development of the game in Blenheim, namely establishing a side good enough to play weekly home and away matches against sides from Nelson, and building a stronger relationship with other provinces. “At this stage, it’s just about trying to get together enough players to make a team to compete,� he says. “If we can get a team that’s good enough to compete and win games, that will be good for the sport here. “The ultimate goal is to have a strong competition in Marlborough that will be competitive against teams and clubs from other regions.�

Mr Tipene says one of his longterm goals is to organise an annual pre-season match against a side from Canterbury. The bigest obstacles to overcome will be breaking the rugby and soccer culture in Blenheim, and securing sponsorship, he says. As well as raising league’s profile, Mr Tipene also wants to help repair it. “All people see of league on television lately is thuggery. It’s not about that - it’s about the passion and the skill. I’d like to portray it as a positive sport. “It also gives people another option - not everybody likes rugby and likes soccer.� “It’s another outlet to join in.�
