Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Derogatory comments and a headless Prime Minister are just a few of the vandalist acts being applied to National Party billboards throughout the Kaikoura electorate. National MP for Kaikoura Colin King is frustrated at the defacing of Prime Minister John Key and the profanities being placed onto the billboards in the lead-up to Election Day later this month. “The vandalism began three weeks ago but the recent lot has really become personal,” Mr King said.
He says the vandalism has been carried out “covertly under the cover of darkness” which has seen most signs either defaced or badly damaged by people yet to be caught. Some of the professionally printed stickers applied have said ‘More money for the rich’, and ‘more drilling, mining and selling’. “There have been all sorts of profanities placed over them which is very pathetic. “I believe this is coming from an extreme left side of the debate as the older parties have been around too long to go that low.” About 700 National billboards were stickered
nationwide on Monday morning, an act Green Party MP Russell Norman said was under the independent coordination of fellow party member Jolyon White, and one he has condemned. Green Party Kaikoura electorate candidate Steffan Browning has also slammed the acts of vandalism and said he agreed with Mr Norman. “From what I understand, the National billboard defacing was a one-day act, so I want to make clear that the rest of the vandalism carried out over the past three weeks were the actions of individuals, not the Green Party,” he said.

marlborough roofing owner darren armstrong is mixing plaster to go on the roof of the Blenheim railway station before applying ‘flexi-point’ to help safeguard against earthquakes.
Railway station quake-proofed Story and photo by Damian George Builders are currently working towards earthquake-proofing the roof of Blenheim’s Railway Station as refurbishment continues on the historic building. The KiwiRail-owned station is expected to be completed by the end of January, and will complement the recently developed i-Site which stands opposite. KiwiRail national property development manager Mark Baylis told The Sun this week builders had uncovered a lot more work to be done on the building’s roof when construction began recently. Parts of it had rotted and a decision was made to significantly

improve its durability, he said. “We thought ‘right let’s do it properly’, and we put our hand up [to overhaul the roof],” he says. “We’ve done a substantial amount of strengthening and installed steel portals, and we’ve put in additional bracing.” Mr Baylis says Marseille roof tiles identical to the original tiles have managed to be sourced from Christchurch, helping to retain the building’s heritage. The new building will have added shelter and upgraded platforms to match the recentlyunveiled new scenic carriages on the TranzCoastal service between Christchurch and Picton.

An internet cafe is likely to be included in the new building, while services including bike hire, luggage storage and ticketing are being considered. Mr Baylis says KiwiRail aims to expedite the process for businesses wanting to set up at the station by having internal cables and lighting ready and operating. “They will just have to bring in their furniture and they’ll be ready to go.” He says the engineer’s submission, done by Blenheim company Smart Alliances, is the only submission waiting approval from the Marlborough District Council.
All Black winger Zac Guildford has again found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons, being accused of assaulting two people at a bar in the Cook Islands on Friday night. Guildford reportedly entered the Rarotongan bar drunk, naked and bleeding, and later told his Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder he could not remember the incident. The accusation follows another alcoholrelated incident in Brisbane during this year’s Tri-Nations.

Redwoodtown Doctors manager Ruth Vause is excited by the development of a new doctors’ room. Story and photo by Damian George
The addition of a fifth consultation room is set to enable Redwoodtown Doctors to treat 20 per cent more patients by early next year. Work on the development of a second floor to allow space for the additional room began about a month ago, and is expected to be completed by mid January. Redwoodtown Doctors manager Ruth Vause says the upper
level will provide much-needed management and administration space, as well as a staff room and some private nursing facilities. She says the extra space will make life much easier for staff, who are currently “totally and utterly cramped” in the limited facilities. The business is expecting to welcome a new GP to its team sometime next year. “Blenheim struggles to main-
tain adequate GP numbers for the growing population and many practices are unable to expand to accommodate new GPs,” Mrs Vause says. “We are planning to accept new patients for a new GP next year.” Mrs Vause says pharmacists have reported many Cantabrians with significnt health problems have recently relocated to Blenheim and are struggling to find GPs to enrol with.
Devine ‘not slack’ in moving By Damian George Hairdresser Arthur Devine has dismissed suggestions he has been slack in moving back into his Blenheim salon following the reinstatement Arthur Devine of his lease last week. Mr Devine was wrongfully evicted from his hair salon building in High St in August for not paying outstanding rent. It was later revealed a payment had been made in time, but an error at landlord William Yates’ former law firm Hardy Jones Clark meant it was not picked up. The first of Mr Devine’s equipment was moved back into the salon on Monday, but Mr Yates has expressed frustration over the speed of the move, saying Mr Devine has not provided everything needed to get the salon operating again. “That’s just rubbish,” Mr Devine told The Sun yesterday. “We intend to get back in there as soon as possible, and we haven’t done anything to hold [the process] up.” Mr Devine has been operating solely out of his Picton salon since staff and customers turned up to find the proprietor’s lease at the Blenheim salon had been

cancelled on August 5. Mr Devine told The Sun he has been working in Picton every day and has let his law firm Radich Law deal with the move. Mr Devine did not want to comment yesterday on the matters surrounding the eviction, other than to say he was happy with the High Court decision. “Everyone’s had their two cents worth.
“We just want to get on with it and get trading. “Our biggest thank you is to our clients for sticking with us and persevering with coming to Picton for their appointments.” Mr Devine wanted to point out the comment made by Justice Alan MacKenzie in court that he did not have a history of failure to pay or late payment that would justify the lease not being reinstated.

Lions award unexpected
The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will today implement the nationwide Care Capacity Demand Management (CCDM) programme, which aims to improve the way the demand for health care is matched against capacity. Implementation of the CCDM began in March with the support of the Safe Staffing Healthy Workplaces (SSHW) Unit. The programme was launched in Nelson during October.
Story and photo by Damian George Blenheim man Malcolm Williams has been awarded the highest accolade given to the organisation’s members, the Melvin Jones Fellow. Mr Williams, who joined the Lions Club in Foxton in 1986 before moving to Blenheim in 1997, received the award at a regular club meeting last Wednesday. The award is handed out by the Lions Clubs International Foundation for dedicated humanitarian services. Mr Williams says he was humbled by the recognition. “You never expect [awards],” he says. “In the Lions and Rotary clubs, you work for the service and the pleasure of participating and helping the organisation.” Mr Williams says the highlight of his time with the Blenheim Lions Club was his part in re-establishing the Leo Club at Marlborough Boys’ College in 2006. His service involvement began in 1975 in Nelson, when he joined the Round Table charitable organisation. That organisation did not exist in Foxton when he moved there in 1986, so he joined the Lions. He joined the district cabinet as zone chairman in 2006, became regional chairman, and is now Leo Club advisor and Youth Exchange chairman. His mentoring of and support for Leos Clubs at secondary schools was commended at the meeting.

ing spaces. It is scheduled to be completed by December 20. Marlborough District Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says levelling of the surface and laying down asphalt is the next stage of the development. That is expected to begin soon, followed by metering and line marking. The decision to develop the car park was made by the council in June, after plans to
develop a $15 million Farmers Trading Co department store on the site fell through due to two developers pulling out of the project. The car park was initially scheduled to be completed by September 30. That date was then pushed out to mid October. Mr Lyall says the delays were a result of tender preparations.

Something light and fresh to go with the BBQ season
Green Salad with strawberries and pine nuts ½ punnet of Strawberries hulled and cut into quarters ½ cup of pine nuts toasted ½ tsp of sea salt flakes A large bowl of fresh mixed salad leaves include baby spinach and rocket or nasturtium leaves (You’ll want the richness and the pepper flavor) Toast pine nuts over a low heat in a non-stick pan moving them constantly so they don’t burn. Once lightly toasted put aside in a cool bowl. Combine the salad leaves pine nuts and strawberries, sprinkle the sea salt flakes over the whole salad and give a light toss. With the strawberries and peppery salad leaves it dosen’t need a dressing.

Fresh Herb Green salad A selection of salad green leaves like a mesclun mix ½ cup of finely cupped fresh herbs (pick two either basil and mint or thyme and rosemary or coriander and parsley) White balsamic vinegar to drizzle (Not black you want the lighter flavour of white) Combine in a large salad bowl and drizzle with the white balsamic vinegar just before serving. Both are great with BBQs as they are fresh and don’t have overpowering dressings.

Story and photo by Damian George It may look like your standard Chinese takeaway, but the recently-opened Panda Fan’s Takeaways in Blenheim is not likely to stay that way for long. In fact, the eatery’s owners - local businessmen Jamie Son and Lei Zhang - plan to convert the former gelato shop on Queen St into a hub for multi-cultural dining. “We’re trying to achieve the food court concept,” Mr Son says. “We want to provide more food outlets for the people of Blenheim to create a food court like other cities have.” Mr Son already owns JJ’s Coffee caravan in central Blenheim’s Market Place, while Mr Zhang owns Fan’s Chinese Restaurant on Arthur St. Both say they welcome any interest from local cooks who want to set up their international cuisine at the new store. Currently being served at the store are traditional takeaway items such as wontons, spring rolls and fried rice, but Mr Zhang already has plans to introduce sushi and some curry dishes to the menu. Mr Son launched a multi-cultural food market at Market Place in September, which runs every Sunday and includes cooks from a range of nationalities including Indonesian, Korean, Indian, Chinese and Czech.

Public to have say on High St By Damian George Options for development on the Number 2 High St site in Blenheim will be put out to the public, Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says. A Speight’s Ale House had been pencilled in for the site but the Marlborough District Council later decided to put that project on hold and reassess its options. Mr Sowman told The Sun the council has a lot of work to do in determining how much green space it needs to meet the obligations of the Urban Design Strategy set out in 2009. “Council staff are continuing to look at ways in which the Number 2 High Street site could be used, keeping in mind the principles of the Urban Design Strategy and its ‘green space’ concepts for the riverside,” he says. “Somehow, we have to find an option that delivers public space while [also] increasing the vibrancy of the area. “Any options that emerge will be put out for public feedback as we need to be assured any plan council ultimately decides to support is the right decision for the longer term benefit of the town.”

To a daughter whose 83-year-old mother requires Age-Related Retirement Care Redwood Lifestyle Care and Village is like a “Homely Hotel”. At Redwood, as much as we can, we recreate the dayto-day routines people had in their own home. For example, at 7am there is no earsplitting bell ringing, ordering people to “have breakfast now or miss out”. Instead, people living here eat breakfast when it suits them. Some eat at 7am, some even earlier. Yet others like to sleep in and have breakfast at a time that, to some, signifies morning tea. Allowing for individual preferences extends to other “BIG little things” too, like knowing your mother has her favourite shade of nail polish, or that your father enjoys having his daily tipple just before lunch time. at times that suit you, not just during “regular hours”. For instance, we quite often have family members visit after midnight, having flown in from Australia.
South Island Bowls Tournament Fundraiser
Other ways in which we create a happy and secure environment are through: • 12 different activities per week (on average) for people to take part in • People having access to their own GP, the one they are comfortable with • A private phone in people’s rooms • A “Buddy System”: where a new person doesn’t know any current residents, we team them up with a person who has a similar background and interests. And if you would like a smart, refurbished room for your loved one - with its own kitchenette and ensuite - we have 3 such rooms available now. (We call them “Assisted Living Suites”).

Story and photo by Damian George A Blenheim woman is opening her garden to the public as she begins fundraising for a major South Island bowls tournament to be held in the town for the next two years. Springlands Bowling Club member Val Tringham is one of several local bowlers on a committee set up to raise funds for the Clubs NZ South Island Women’s Outdoor Bowls Tournament. It will be held in Blenheim in October next year, and again in 2013. Val has an extensive home garden and has been growing plants there for charity purposes for several years. She will be opening her home to
people later this month in an event she has called the ‘Huge Plant Sale’ - her personal contribution to the fundraising effort. “We need to raise as much as we can as we’ve committed to running the tournament for the next two years,” she says. “There will be a huge selection of perennials for sale, and people can look through the garden as well.” The tournament has traditionally been held in Christchurch, Timaru and Oamaru. Funds raised will go towards green hires, catering, transport, ‘goodie bags’, programs, printing, and postage.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What do you like most about Marlborough and what could be done to improve it?

I love the gardens, beaches and bush walks. It doesn’t need to be improved at all.
Sunshine is great and so are the friendly people. Keep Blenheim as it is, it doesn’t need to be any bigger.
Great sunshine and friendly people. Blenheim is as good as it gets, so don’t change a thing.
I like Blenheim because of its friendly people, nice atmosphere and it’s a comfortable place. I can’t think of anything to change.
Blenheim has a good climate, wine and friendly people. What can be improved is, we need a traffic bypass.
I love the wonderful surrounds, the joys of vineyards, friendly people, restaurants, and the Sounds are so close by. I do think that we need more trees.

Pick up after your dogs Dear Ed, I would like to ask why no one is picking up their dog poo in Marlborough? This is an offence, and one I would like challenged. There are a lot of dogs in Marlborough, and no one is doing anything about it. Pick up your own dog’s poo! With Regards, Cushla

Ale House not a pub Dear Ed, In response to all the people referring to the Speight’s Ale House as a ‘pub’, ‘liquor outlet’ or ‘booze barn’, I can only assume you have not visited one before. Calling a family restaurant a liquor outlet is like calling the Basin Reserve a rugby ground - it’s just factually wrong. A Speight’s Ale House is a family restaurant which happens, like every restaurant, to sell alcohol. I think the fact the word ‘Speight’s’ is in the title is throwing you off.
The fact Lion is looking to establish a restaurant here is a massive coup for Blenheim. People visiting here won’t believe it when they see such a quality restaurant in such a small town. If we turn this opportunity away, we are all going to miss out on some amazing and well-priced pub meals (I recommend the lamb shanks). Speight’s Ale Houses cater for males, females, and families. If you don’t believe me, take the family and go check one out. Perspective Please
Asset sales Dear Ed, I would like to comment regarding asset sales currently proposed. State assets, and really ‘taxpayer assets’, all services provided should be at cost to taxpayers, not at extraordinary prices that are forced upon us. If government sells our taxpayer assets, run off with the money, probably to pay back money that they have borrowed, plus the astronomical interest that is incurred, and leave the taxpayer to pay the new
owner a second time over, plus interest, shareholders, big management wages and big profits, forever ongoing, we will never own it again. These extra costs will also, with others, go on to increase the cost of New Zealand goods and services. The result: businesses going broke, or moving overseas, resulting in more unemployment. Also, if retirement age is raised, result will be less opportunities for younger unemployed people. Ken Lawrence

Dear Ed, On my way to work this morning I saw a school student on a bike pull out in front of me without looking behind him. He simply extended his arm and crossed to the middle of the road. Sounds to me like schools should be reinforcing the road rules to their students for their own safety. Astounded
Mayor responds to Main St story Dear Ed, It was disappointing to see such a misrepresentation of the situation in your report of an Auckland developer who has been looking at a property in Main Street. Your article (“Frustration Over Resource Consent’ dated October 26 page 2) suggests the developer has been waiting a long time for resource consent from the District Council to advance his plans for a site he intended to develop for three retail tenants. In fact, this developer’s proposal did not comply with access or parking requirements. His subsequent attempt to get the required agreement from his neighbouring properties failed. He suspended his consent application more than a month ago, withdrawing it completely early in October, a fact The Sun could easily have ascertained had it contacted the Council. The reason given by the developer for withdrawal was ‘changed circumstances’, which is nothing to do with the Council. For one of the developer’s potential tenants to now try and point the finger at the Council is neither fair criticism nor balanced reporting. The Council isn’t in a position to make it ‘easy’ or ‘difficult’ for developers; it must follow the legal consent processes in line with the Resource Management Act. I would have thought all developers, retailers and real estate agents would be well aware of that. ALISTAIR SOWMAN MAYOR Publisher response: The Auckland developer has not responded to the above letter. The Sun newspaper believes it made it clear in the story that the developer was critical of the RMA, and that the MDC was following those procedures. Maybe the MDC should make it ‘easy’ for developers and encourage development in Blenheim. More Letters to The Editor on Page 30.

Diabetes is a serious health condition of which there is no cure, this is why the dedicated team at Diabetes Marlborough continually strives to promote awareness throughout the community. The month of November is particularly significant to Diabetes Marlborough as volunteers and staff organise a range of fundraising events as well as diabetes testing for members of the public. Diabetes Awareness Week runs from November 15-21 which will see particular emphasis placed on Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Marlborough field officer Helen Hannay says having a family history of Type 2 diabetes significantly increases your risk of developing the condition yourself. “If one parent has Type 2 diabetes then their children are two to four times more likely to develop the disease than the average person,” she says. If left untreated it can cause debilitating complications. “If diagnosed early, diabetes can be effectively managed and the risk

of serious health problems is greatly reduced,” Helen says. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, can be successfully managed or even prevented by maintaining a health weight, engaging in regular physical activity and having healthy eating patterns.
Diabetes Facts & Figures: New figures launched by the International Diabetes Federation indicate that the number of people living with diabetes has risen to 366 million. • Diabetes is responsible for 4.6 million deaths each year – one every seven seconds. • Diabetes is among the top 10 causes of disability, resulting in devastating complications such as blindness and lower limb amputations. • Over 200,000 New Zealanders have diabetes and that number is growing rapidly. Every day 40 more people are diagnosed, and it is estimated that about 500,000 New Zealanders have pre-diabetes (40 per day are being diagnosed). • On current trends, by 2022 the total number of people with Type 2 diabetes is expected to be at least 407,000.

Diabetes Awareness Week
15th - 21st Nov
“Don’t let diabetes rule your life” By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim man Ken Deane believes he may have had Type 2 diabetes longer than his diagnosis after experiencing a number of symptoms for many years. Ken was diagnosed 16 years ago but says signs of the condition showed a lot earlier. “Some of the symptoms I experienced were increased tiredness, stumbling when moving around, drinking a lot of water and forgetfulness. “I have since had a number of health problems and some of them are related to having diabetes,” he says. Damaged nerves are a common complication of diabetes which in Ken’s case has also caused diabetic neuropathy. “I have it from my knees down so I can stub my toe and not know about it so it’s
another thing to keep an eye on,” he says. Because his mother had diabetes, Ken says he was aware of the condition but because of his active lifestyle he hadn’t expected to be diagnosed himself. “I was very active I had a young family, I worked in the air force, tended to my large vegetable garden, I would bike from home to work each day and ate healthy meals. “So when I was diagnosed I was a little shocked but I just accepted it and said ok, what do I have to do to manage this condition,” he says. Ken was referred to a dietician who helped him to plan healthy meals and he also wears a Bupa Personal Medical Alarm for emergencies. “I don’t let diabetes rule my life, you can live a good life without letting it take control,” he says.
Diabetes risk factors The risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes include being overweight (particularly around your waist or abdomen), having a family history of diabetes, having high cholesterol or high blood pressure, your age (over 40 for Europeans and over 30 for Maori, Pacific and Indo Asian people) and having a large baby. Symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes may include excessive thirst, a constant need to urinate, feeling unexplained tiredness and lack of energy, being hungrier than usual, having blurred vision, feeling numbness in your hands and feet, having sores that don’t heal and experiencing recurrent infections.
Diabetes testing this week Diabetes testing is available for people at risk of Type 2 diabetes this week at the Blenheim Library. The cost is only $2 per person and is not available to children. It is recommended that people do not eat a large meal prior to their test. • Wednesday, November 16 11am-2pm • Thursday, November 17 11am - 2pm • Friday, November 18 11am - 2pm
Your first step for Diabetic footcare. Simple steps to improve lifestyle You can reduce your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by taking some simple steps to improve your lifestyle right now! Some things you can’t change such as family history of diabetes, getting older or belonging to a high-risk ethnic group, but there are a number of things you can do. • Keep your weight under control • Staying active and getting plenty of exercise • Have regular health checks • Sensible eating and drinking • Quit smoking
Healthy eating is just one way you can reduce your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Notable moustaches
‘Movember’ a celebration
The longest recorded moustache belongs to Bajansinh Juwansinh Gurjar of Ahmedabad, India. It had not been cut for 22 years and was 12 feet, 6 inches long in 2004. In some cases, the moustaches are so prominently identified with a single individual that it could be identified with him without any further identifying traits, such as in the case of Adolf Hitler. In some cases, such as with Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin, the moustache in question was artificial
Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men. Mo Bros, supported by their Mo Sistas, start Movember (November 1st) clean shaven and then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache. During Movember, each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard for men’s health and, via their Mo, raises essential funds and awareness for Movember’s men’s health partners – The Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.
for most of their lives. Kaiser Wilhelm II’s moustache, grossly exaggerated, featured prominently in Entente propaganda. U.S. Air Force ace Robin Olds became celebrated for the flowing handlebar moustache he grew while commanding the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing “Wolfpack” during the Vietnam War, and when forced to shave it by his superior became the source of an Air Force Groucho Marx tradition known as “Moustache March”.
The idea for Movember came about in 2003 when a few mates were having a beer in a small bar in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Inspired by the women’s health movement, it was recognized that men were lacking a way to engage and actively involve themselves in their own health. Movember has continued to grow each year, both in terms of participation numbers and funds raised. In its first year, 30 Mo Bros took part in Movember and since 2006, the first year in New Zealand, more than 50,000 people have participated and $4million has been raised for Movember’s Kiwi men’s health partners.

Getting creative in 2012 Courtney Jamieson studies in the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) Programme and is majoring in jewellery at The Learning Connexion. In this article she talks about what inspires her and how she discovers a passion for making jewellery. “I am majoring in jewellery. I am working with silver and I have just got into working with bone which I have fallen in love with. I like the silver and the bone together and working with natural materials that I can find. The facilities here are awesome you can find whatever you need here. I like having lots of people around me that are all inspired by each other. I like the tutors - they are quite down
to earth and they just support you and whatever you want to make. They let you explore different things and just be there to guide you and they are really good and really helpful and they are all really clever. I want to be able to make a living out of making my jewellery. One day just have my own little studio and maybe a little shop or something and just sell my jewellery. As natural and New Zealandy as possible.” To find out more about The Learning Connexion or to request a prospectus, phone: 0800 278 769 or visit www. tlc.ac.nz. Their next term begins 23 January 2012.

SIT zero fees big help Helping others and experiencing the world has always been a priority in Joseph Aldridge’s life. After spending five years doing volunteer work for developing countries, Joseph moved back to New Zealand. He completed a Bachelor of Arts, Majoring in Anthropology and Sociology, finding he enjoyed research writing and wanted to do research through journalism. “I became aware of zero fees which really appealed to me due to the $10,000 debt I had from my degree. I felt it was a good opportunity.” Joseph enjoyed the hands-on aspects of the National Diploma course that supplied theory and was supplemented by the practical work. Joseph was thrown in the deep end early on with a story he approached. “It ended up being on the front page of The Southland Times for two days and was picked up by Campbell Live. It was a great lesson on how the media operates.” “I got the most published in my class, especially on work experience. I spent two weeks at Southland Times and two weeks at the Christchurch Star.” After finishing the Diploma, Joseph began a contract with the Southland Times. The motto of Garin College is ‘Faith and Wisdom’. At Garin, teachers and students are on a journey. Over five years of secondary schooling we educate our young people in knowledge. We provide hundreds of significant educational experiences inside and outside our classrooms. And we take the time to learn from those educational experiences, from the other things that happen in our lives, and from the important issues we see in the world. We also foster the concepts, skills, attitudes, and values each of our young people will need to lead a happy and productive life. Out of this educational growth, combined with our growing awareness of the meaning of our lives and our reflection on this, comes an awareness of ourselves, and our places in creation. Prayer, and reflection on this knowledge and experience, leads us to faith and wisdom. Faith and wisdom are the endpoint of all good education.
The Values of Garin College: Our culture is Catholic, but we also stand for:
Garin College students are set challenges both inside and outside the classroom that build confidence and character.
• Faith & Wisdom • Freedom, and living life to the full • Respect for our environment • Commitment • Effective Teaching and Learning • Hard work • Respect for others • Safety • Success for every student From the New Zealand Curriculum we adopt other qualities and competencies to foster. These
are very compatible with the Catholic and Christian character of the school – qualities like communication, creative problem solving, self-management, adaptability, constructive approach to challenge, self-discipline, integrity, social skills, trustworthiness, reliability, fairness, diligence, citizenship, respect for the law, and honesty. Visit www.garincollege.ac.nz for a more in-depth look at what Garin College provides.

When Greymouth man Richard Bonar was overlooked for a management position because he didn’t have a tertiary qualification he quit his job and enrolled to study at Tai Poutini Polytechnic. Four years later he has graduated with Diploma’s in both Business and Culinary Arts, has worked as a head chef and is about to open his own restaurant. “It was a risk leaving my job but I knew if I wanted to progress in a career I needed to have qualifications. The 47 year old began studying a Diploma in Business at TPP and after graduating he decided he wanted to pursue a career as a chef so enrolled in TPP’s Certificate in Professional Culinary Arts programme. “My mother and brother are chefs and although I knew how to cook I had never worked in the field. I enjoyed Culinary Arts so much I decided to do a second year and completed the Certificate in Advanced Professional Culinary Arts / Diploma programme.” TPP’s Culinary Arts Programme Tutor Alex Hayward says like Richard quite a few of our graduates have a medium to long term goal of owning their own establishment. “While the Certificate in Professional Culinary Arts covers the basics the second year Advanced Certificate also covers areas like kitchen management, design and menu planning,“ he says. Both programmes also include internationally recognised London City and Guilds Certificates with last years Advanced Certificate graduates all passing with distinction – the highest grade available. “It is a highly prestigious qualification and has helped graduates get positions in restaurants like Taupo’s Huka Lodge, award-winning Sydney Opera House restaurant Guillaume at Bennelong and Jakarta’s exclusive SHY Restaurant. We are passionate about ensuring students get great work placements to help them develop their career,” says Hayward. The next intake for Certificate in Professional Culinary Arts starts February 2012. The Certificate in Advanced Professional Arts begins on 14 May 2012. To be a real estate agent requires dedication, determination and a real passion for achieving results for clients. Vicki Baker, sales and marketing consultant for Harcourts Marlborough Real Estate, has been one of the region’s top salespeople for the past nine years. Originally from Christchurch, Vicki moved to Marlborough to be closer to family nearly 10 years ago. The move she says was an easy one as the Marlborough Sounds had been a holiday destination for her family when she was young. “Marlborough is a beautiful region with great people and of course the Sounds have always been a draw card,” she says. Now with 12 years industry experience, Vicki says one of the reasons for becoming a real estate professional was the flexibility it gave her to pursue her humanitarian and wildlife volunteer work overseas. “Every couple of years I travel overseas to volunteer in different projects which might see me away for up to six weeks, so having the ability to do this is ideal for me,” she says.
Past projects have included the Orangutan Foundation International conservation project, a Humanitarian project in Rwanda building a dwelling for Orphans, research work at a wildlife reserve in South Africa and just last year a fundraising project in China for Animals Asia to help stop bear bile farming. Having been a vendor herself, Vicki has a strong appreciation for the need for honest and reliable agents who are committed to the client’s best interests. “My philosophy; ‘Straight up, no bull’ is something that down-to-earth Marlborough people seem to relate to and appreciate,” she says. With the tremendous support of her personal assistant Lorraine Barrett and the backing of Harcourts, Vicki is committed to providing excellent service to her clients. “Harcourts is a very progressive company that has high standards in training and performance, and it really shows through their success. Working with a professional and polished team like Harcourts enables me to achieve more for my clients,” she says.

Marlborough Farming with the Blenheim Sun
Lifestyle • Viticulture • Farming
Campaign targets on-farm accidents Every 28 minutes a New Zealand farmer is injured on the job and every 23 days, a farmer dies from a work-related accident. In an effort to understand the factors that lead to injuries on farms, ACC has been carrying out field research as part of a programme called ‘Human Factors In Farming’. Using techniques developed by psychologists from Scotland’s Keil Centre, ACC has been reviewing near miss situations and accidents to see what we can learn about them and share with others, to prevent them happening again and potentially being more serious next time. Case studies based on these preventable accidents will be published in rural publications between November and February 2012. Federated Farmers National Board Member, and health and safety spokesperson, David Rose,
David Rose
will also be talking on rural radio shows about the factors that lead to on-farm accidents. “We want farmers to look at how they can be safer at work by reflecting on actual accidents and make simple changes that will help prevent accidents on their farm. “Thinking about safety is something we should all reflect on every day as a matter of course, because accidents can happen to anyone any day when you least expect it,

Protective clothing essential Throughout the years the use of chemicals in agriculture has increased and while most people enjoy the advantages of using these chemicals, there is always a risk for those handling them. This is why protective clothing is important, not only for you, but for others as well. Keep clothing and equipment clean and in good repair, otherwise its degree of protection will be compromised. When removing, clean thoroughly and examine for damage immediately. If protective clothing or equipment becomes contaminated on the inside when being worn, remove straight away and do not re-use until cleaned.
as happened to me recently. “Wearing my full-face helmet having just travelled on the road between properties, I jumped off my quad bike, which is something I do all the time, and landed awkwardly because I wasn’t looking down and badly sprained my ankle. What made it worse was that this injury happened during lambing, which is my busiest season, so I had to pay for additional help on the farm at a significant cost to myself,” said David. ACC General Manager Insurance and Prevention Services Keith McLea said that about 18,700 New Zealand farmers were injured last year while at work. Tragically, 16 of these injuries proved fatal. “Our research has shown that tiredness, time pressures, poor maintenance of equipment or bad choices were common factors in preventable,” he says.

Coffee, cupcakes and carwash Story and Photo by Celeste Lodewyk Enjoying a coffee and cupcake while your car is washed for you… what better way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon! This was what Spring Creek Playcentre parents were thinking when they planned their fundraising carwash which is being held November 19 at the vacant Grove Road BP station. The event is being supported by Nescafe who has provided
flavoured coffee sachets for motorists using the carwash to enjoy free of charge. “We’ve planned a fun day with face painting for any children who come through and there will be a big bus parked providing a shaded café style area with free coffee and cupcakes for a $2 donation,” she says. The carwash will run from 10am to 2pm rain or shine and costs only $5 per car.

what are they doing in office? We should have a vote of no confidence in the Mayor and council. The Mayor’s comment of ‘He is entitled to his opinion’ is inappropriate in this instance, as he should take heed and look up the rules and regulations. That is why they were put in place, to guide new players. Get it right. Concer ned Blenheim Resident

Dozens of people gathered at Blenheim’s Seymour Square for the annual Armistice Day commemorations on Friday to remember soldiers who perished during World War One. The service, held at 11am on November 11, marked 93 years since the Armistice that ended hostilities on the Western Front during the war. “A short silence is a very small tribute to pay to those soldiers who endured unspeakable times in the horrific condi-

tions of the trenches,” Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said in a speech. Mr Sowman noted gaps exist in virtually every Marlborough family as a result of the casualties during the war. He paid tribute to those who were part of some of the region’s oldest families, including Private James Maher of Old Renwick Road, Private Richard Mapp of Redwoodtown, Private Leonard Matthews of Picton, and Corporal Clarence McLean of Okaramio.
Tennis losses concerning Dear Ed, On Sunday the Marlborough Representative Lucas Cup tennis team lost 16-0 to Nelson. This result comes on the heels of the last result which was 15-1 Nelson kindly defaulting a match. The results were very one sided and clearly when seeing the players named, it would appear this was not the best team.
MEL’s spEciaL of thE wEEk! EEk!
What is the aim of Marlborough tennis? Is it to win? The result has not appeared in the paper at writing yet was published immediately in Nelson. Regardless of the result, Lucas cup results need to be published and at some stage someone needs to be held accountable. I noticed the Malcolm Shield win over Nelson. The Nelson report mentioned Nelson was missing some top players. I think in this case Marlborough was too. Frustrated

Australia’s capitulation in its cricket test against South Africa recently seems to have sparked speculation the Aussies could be in for more of the same when New Zealand visits for a two-test series next month. The once-revered Baggy Greens were skittled for their lowest ever test in the first test against the Proteas at Cape Town, before Hashim Amla and captain Graeme Smith notched up centuries to give the hosts a nine-wicket win. The Australians’ batting was woeful, and their bowling was a continuation of last summer’s Ashes series, when the England batsmen flayed a hapless attack to all parts
over five tests. But to think this series will be a reflection of how the Aussies may go against New Zealand is way off the mark. While Australia are clearly not the team they used to be, facing bowlers such as Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and bowling to the likes of Amla, Smith and Jacques Kallis is a far cry from what New Zealand will be able to throw at them. That is not to say this is a poor New Zealand side - there are some quality cricketers there and they may well give Australia a run. But it will be hard work. The bowling attack will largely unphase Australia, a lt houg h t h e you ng yet

experienced Tim Southee remains a real threat. He is likely to be backed up by veterans Chris Martin and Daniel Vettori, rookie Doug Bracewell and either Andy McKay or Trent Boult in the 14-man squad. The key for New Zealand will be its batting, where there is plenty of talent. Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder represent a more than capable top five with impressive records. It is not a bad New Zealand team, but it does not look like one capable of beating Australia in its own backyard at this stage.

Marlborough defeated by Nelson >CRICK E T Marlborough’s under-18 team has gone down to its Nelson counterpart by six wickets in a Central Districts regional tournament warm-up match at Horton Park in Blenheim on Sunday. Batting first, Marlborough stuttered to 105 all out in 44 overs, with opener Ricki Bovey top-scoring with 21. In reply, Nelson were cruising at 40 without loss before Sam Boyce took
two wickets in two balls to give the home side some hope. Fellow new-ball bowler Ben Blackman and left-arm spinner Bovey each took one wicket to keep Marlborough in the hunt, before Nelson got home without any further damage. Boyce bowled his ten overs on the trot, taking two for 23. The Central Districts regional tournament takes place in Napier in December.

Diabetes led to amputation By Celeste Lodewyk It has been 22 years since Blenheim woman Avis Watson was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and after having two limb amputations she says having regular health checks is very important. Avis led a healthy and active life and with a busy family life she never once considered that she would develop diabetes. It was not until she visited the doctor, which happened to be during Diabetes Awareness Week, that she was tested and found to have Type 2 diabetes. “With medication, exercise and healthy diet I managed the condition until 2000 when I had triple bypass surgery which was a result of diabetes,” she says. In December 2009 Avis had her lower left leg amputated following complications with her veins blocking from diabetes. The surgery was successful but after having her stitches taken out, surgeons discovered that more of the leg urgently needed to be removed and her leg was amputated above the knee. “Looking back the only sign that I had diabetes was weight loss, but at the time I was pretty pleased to lose it after having children,” she laughs. “It’s a silent condition that is not often noticed early on so it’s important that people, especially the young ones be proactive and have regular diabetes checks,” she says.
From Paris to Blenheim Pram restored for family heirloom
Chris Anderson and Dallas Reeves of HR Engineering pictured with the unusual Marmet coach built pram which they restored for German couple Claudia Marie and Oliver Wiesner. Photo supplied.
Avis Watson encourages being proactive when it come to diabetes health checks.
Diabetes checks are being held today, Thursday and Friday at the Blenheim Library from 11am – 2pm.
An important and unusual family heirloom has been brought back to life after initial fears it would not survive a restoration. German Claudia Marie and fiancé Oliver Wiesner, had a Marmet coach built pram brought over from Germany in a container with the intention of restoring it for their infant daughter Sophie who was born four months ago. The pram was originally built in Paris 35 years ago and was used for Claudia’s younger sister by their mother.
Also wanting the pram for a family heirloom, Claudia and Oliver searched for a local engineer who would take on the challenge of bending it back into shape. “Whereever we asked they said they couldn’t do it as it was so bent out of shape that no one wanted to risk breaking our heirloom,” Claudia says. The guys at HR Engineering took on the challenge and restored it for the couple. “We were grateful that the guys restored it back to its original state,” she says.
