By Damian George Plans for the annual Christmas in the Park concert in Blenheim have been thrown into disarray after organisers lost one of its major sponsors last week. Event organisers rely on $8500 of sponsorship money to run the evening at Pollard Park, $6000 of which they were banking on from the sponsor.

Christmas in the Park organiser Denis Humphreys told The Sun on Monday his planning team is now seeking community donations to enable the event, scheduled for next Sunday, to go ahead. “We have decided we’re going to go for it anyway, we just hope that the money’s going to come in in time,” he says. “For the sake of the community, we’re

Confusion over car park plans By Damian George A group of Blenheim retailers say plans for the conversion of a car park near their businesses into public green space contradicts what they had been told would happen to the site by Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman. The Marlborough District Council will consult with concerned parties about the plans soon, which involve creating a pocket park in place of the car park on the corner of Queen and Charles streets. The proposed park is recommended in the council’s 2010 Blenheim CBD Streetscape plan, but retailers say they were under the impression an earlier proposal outlined in a 2009 plan would be the one council took to the public. That plan involved removing only some of the parking spaces, not all of them. The retailers, along with The Sun, attended a meeting on September 26, in which Mr Sowman advised them coun-

cil would go with the initial concept. Marlborough UFS Dispensary worker Margaret Tapp told The Sun the retailers had left the meeting happy with the

outcome, but now feel “let down”. “Alistair Sowman assured us he was going to put a halt to the 2010 plan and consult further on Proposal 1 as

originally released in 2009,” she says. “Our concern is that removing the car park is going to ruin businesses in this area.” Mr Sowman told The Sun that at the time the meeting took place, plans had already begun on developing the 2010 concept. He says council plans to consult with those affected by the development, and nothing is locked in. Council advocate of the plan for the town centre Terry Sloan says he was unaware of the outcome of the meeting between Mr Sowman and the retailers. He says he is currently waiting on a detailed plan for the site, and reiterated plans to consult with those affected by the development. “We’re not going to race off and just do it without talking to these people,” he says. “Everyone will get an opportunity to voice their opinion.”

Two MPs for Marlborough By Darren Greenwood And then there were two. After an election which saw National increase its support but lose coalition MPs, Marlborough now has its second MP, Steffan Browning of the Green Party. A strong showing for the Green Party nationally saw the 57-year-old Blenheim-based organic farmer gain a list placing, adding to the district’s representation from long serving National electorate MP Colin King. Both say they are from different ends of the political spectrum but, while they will differ on some issues, they will work together where they can. For Colin King, retaining the seat with almost 60% of the constituency vote, the small increase was a reflection of his advocacy for Marlborough, including his electorate office dealing with 500 cases a year. Issues included working to secure the C130 contract at the Woodbourne airbase to upgrade Hercules aircraft and major legislation around acquaculture, the Emissions Trading Steffan Browning and his campaign manager Pam Nicholls Scheme, plus Resource Management Act celebrate his success in this year’s national elections. issues, including the Te Korowai integrated management plan for coastline between the their money on.” Waiau River and the Clarence River. Other roading plans he will push for include a realignKing sees his result as a “good mandate”, one of which ment of Spotswood Bridge and a “drastic upgrading” he plans to build upon by backing an Environmental of Weld Pass. Protection Agency plan change for the King Salmon Such issues may lead to King to clash with Browning industry, further ‘commercialisation’ of Woodbourne but the electorate MP feels he can work with the list and more refitting of C130s for the South Pacific. newcomer. Peters and New Zealand First to parliament, King King believes a Blenheim by-pass is “sensible” but added he and Browning would meet for coffee, but “there are better things [for government] to spend not tea.

Big plans for Browning By Darren Greenwood Marlborough’s second MP says he expects to have a national role as the Green Party’s agriculture spokesman. Blenheim-based Steffan Browning entered parliament through the Green Party list on Satruday. Browning credits the rise of environmental issues for his success, coupled with hard work from his campaign team, including manager Pam Nicholls, and the Green Party nationally presenting a more moderate image. Browning says he hopes to work constructively with the region’s electorate MP Colin King, including them both serving on the primary production select committee, of which King has

been deputy chair. Browning says he has a strong social conscience, but also highlights his business credentials, which include owning the country’s largest certified organic glasshouse. “I understand the issues of small business and for farmers and producers,” he says. “I am determined to find ways to ensure producers maintain their income. I want to see more people on the land, not less.” Browning’s other interests include safe food, natural health, and GE Food, and he hopes to be a strong voice on fishing issues, claiming current forestry methods harm fish stocks. He opposes foreign ownership of the country’s primary resources.

Though national matters may gain prominence with his list role, Browning has a long history of local activism with campaigns including the Waihopi spy base. He opposes a new ferry terminal at Clifford Bay, and believes coastal shipping and rail will be more effective than improved roading and more trucks. It was, he argues, greater truck usage causing the problems with Blenheim’s Grove Road Bridge. “We cannot have them (big trucks) carrying on through the middle of Blenheim. There has to be an alternative,” he says. If more rail and coastal shipping was used, “’The pressure on Grove Road would diminish significantly.”

Event loses major sponsor From Page 1. He says he was only advised of the former sponsor’s decision to pull out of the event on Friday, just over two weeks before the concert date. “We were just a bit gutted,” he says. “Our planning team was working towards making plans. “Everything was on track for a great event. We got a great band - the Paul Madsen band from Nelson - and a mass choir from the

Pacific community.” Mr Humphreys did not want to name the sponsor, as it had been a great supporter of the event for many years. His team of organisers plan the event with the Blenheim Ministers’ Association. He says paying those bands, hiring the sound system and running of power are the main costs of the event. Mr Humphreys says the plan for

this year was to take the event to a new level from what had been achieved in previous years. He says about six businesses have already agreed to make donations in the last few days. Want to support the event? You can make a donation into the ANZ Bank account Blenheim Assembly of God Church, 010598-0048809-00, with the note ‘Christmas in the Park’.

Violence against women is becoming less of a taboo subject, says Malcolm Pitman of Te Rapuora. Malcolm was one of many advocates out in force on Friday, spreading the anti-violence message to men in Blenheim’s CBD as part of the White Ribbon Day campaign. White ribbons were handed out for men to wear, showing they will not condone or remain silent

about violence against women and children. “I came here today with an openness to talk to other men and show them that hey, I have a history too but it’s possible to make a positive change,” Malcolm told The Sun. “It’s more important now than ever that we look out for each other as it’s behind closed doors that violence generally takes place.” White Ribbon Day campaign

raises awareness of men’s violence against women - which in New Zealand generally takes place within families. The campaign celebrates the many men willing to show leadership and commitment to promoting safe, healthy relationships within families and is the largest effort by men across the world, working in partnership with women, to end men’s violence against women.

Comedian visits By Celeste Lodewyk With Christmas festivities getting underway, Marlborough will be receiving an early gift in the form of one of New Zealand’s top comedians, Raybon Kan. Raybon will be bringing his much anticipated show ‘Clear and Present Manger’ to be hosted in Picton this Friday and Saturday, by Escape to Picton Boutique Hotel Restaurant and Bar owner Juliearna Kavanagh. By special request, Raybon’s show will be a prelude to what will be performed at Wellington’s Downstage Theatre next week. Clear and Present Manger is an

edgy new show which promises to “skewer Santa, cross-examine Christmas and cluster-mulch glass-eyed reindeer into a delicious steamer of red nosed dim-sum”. Following the shows, Juliearna hopes to take Raybon on a tour of Marlborough wineries to give him a taste of what the region has to offer. “It’s an incredible opportunity for Marlborough to host a comedian such as Raybon and I am hoping it will leave a lasting impression on him. “When high profile people visit, they go away telling other people about the region which in turn

brings more people here, so let’s give him a warm Marlborough welcome,” she says. Tickets are at a special prelude price of $20 each and can still be purchased from Juliearna by phoning 03 573 5573.

Vitis opens new store Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman was on hand to officially open Vitis New Zealand’s purposebuilt new premesis on Grove Road in Blenheim last week. Vitis New Zealand CEO Cathy Robinson says she was keen for the winery equipment and supplies business, which has been in Marlborough for more than 20 years, to move to a building which could house the different facets of its operations.

“We have grown over the years to provide an ever expanding range of top quality winery equipment to meet the needs of the wine industry,” she says. “Tanks and barrels are not small items that you can just put on a shelf.” Mrs Robinson says the new site will be much better for both staff and customers and makes the company a “one-stop-shop” for wineries.

“We have had a few winemakers come in so far who have been impressed and some called it their ‘candy store’,” she says. The building was architecturally designed by Wellington company Accent Architects. Another Wellington company, Woolstore Investments, bought the former antique and storage business site last year. Vitis takes up the back half of the building.

Whooping cough epidemic overdue, doctor warns By Damian George The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board says people should brace themselves for a nationwide whooping cough epidemic following the confirmation of nearly 50 cases in the upper South Island recently. The Marlborough and Tasman region has been hit by 49 cases of the disease since October, with 33 of those confirmed. In Marlborough, the tally has doubled to six cases in the same period. NMDHB medical officer of health Dr Jill Sherwood, speaking after a national teleconference last week, told The Sun people can expect a whooping cough epidemic in New Zealand in the near future. "We know from past experience that we can expect to have a pertussis [whooping cough] epidemic nationally - but it won't all happen at exactly the same time - about every five or six years.

"The last epidemic was in 2004/2005, so we are due for that to happen." Dr Sherwood says the recent outbreak, which is most prominent in the West Coast, Nelson and Tasman, is likely due to the amount of time since the last epidemic. "If there's been a recent epidemic, then a lot of people will be immune and it tends not to spread rapidly," she says. "As [immunity] wanes, there will be more people who will be susceptible." Children in New Zealand are immunised at six weeks, three months and five months, and again when they reach four years of age and 11 years of age. Dr Sherwood says 12 to 15 percent of children will not develop full immunity as a result of vaccinations. She says 30 percent of adults who have a cough lasting more than two weeks are diagnosed with whooping cough.

Meeting called to reform Renwick Hall committee By Celeste Lodewyk Renwick Community Memorial Hall RSA representative Ian Blue has dismissed a recent memorandum from the Marlborough District Council lawyer Peter Radich, and has called a meeting for tomorrow night for all parties to come together. The memorandum issued November 18 covers the issue of the hall committee’s legality and suggests the hall belongs to the owner of the land it’s fixed to, the Education Ministry. This will be the second attempt this month by the RSA to have all parties come together with the intention of getting the hall committee up and running again. “On November 8 we called a meeting which the council asked us to cancel but we went ahead with anyway.

rations, she says. “Be alert, solar light enthusiasts, and look out for your Christmas decorations. “The season is nearly here.” Although at first she did not report the incident because it was a minor crime, she has since spoken with police. As well as the trespass issue, Mrs Amos says she was livid about the theft and will not replace the stolen lights. “I was so angry. “I’m not going to replace them so the thieving sods cruising around can do it again.” This has not been the first case of lights being stolen recently. An elderly couple suffering from arthritis had 20 solar lights stolen in the same week they bought them.

By Jacob McSweeny A local Blenheim woman is warning gardeners to keep a close watch on their garden equipment over Christmas after she had eight solar lights stolen recently. Dawn Amos, who lives alone and is almost 80, decided to write to The Sun as a way of raising awareness about the thieves. “They couldn’t have taken them during the day so they must have been cruising at night. “My concern is that these people came onto my property…I’m nearly 80 and I’m by myself and its a little bit scary knowing that people can just come onto your property.” With the Christmas season upon us, people needed to be careful when hanging out expensive seasonal deco-

People should be vigilant in practising good cough hygiene, which means washing hands and covering mouths when coughing, and should be especially careful not to cough around babies, she says. Dr Sherwood advises people with a persistent cough to see a doctor and stay away from schools and early childhood centres. Other symptoms of the disease include spasms of coughing which result in vomiting or difficulty breathing. Women in the latter stages of pregnancy should avoid close contact with people who are coughing to minimise risk of infecting other people or passing the disease on to their newborn babies. For any queries, contact your family doctor or practice nurse, or call 0800 HEALTHLINE (0800 611 116) or 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863).

It’s the RSA’s opinion that the hall committee has been inoperable since 1997 when the council withdrew its membership from the committee. “This withdrawal was later verified in 2006, so the minute they withdrew they lost all authority and the committee can’t legally be represented until it is reformed,” he says. “Thursday’s meeting is for school board members and council members to work with us to legally reform the hall committee according to the constitution, and then we can move forward from there.” Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman told The Sun yesterday that when Mr Radich has collated feedback from the memorandum, he will assess what further action the council will consider.

There will be sing-a-long carols and feature performances by the Tempo Choir, the Metronomes Band, the Salvation Army Band plus much more. The concert is aiming to support the Salvation Army Toy Appeal by accepting donations of unwrapped toys and gift wrapping paper as an entrance fee. The popularity of Tempo concerts pulls crowds of more than 200 people, and this Christmas concert will be no exception, say organisers. The concert will be held at the Wesley Centre and starts at 6:30pm. People are encouraged to bring a plate of food for a shared supper. A nice meal with some good company is all we need.

I try to shop throughout the year. Try to!

I started last week, nice and early to get it out of the way.

I’m just starting today!

I won’t be doing any, as I am relocating.

I usually start in December, I think a lot of people are losing interest in it.

Marlborough Community Ph: 579 9333 Generosity For a free no obligation quote

Dear Sir, As we recognise the huge contribution of our volunteers it is also timely that we acknowledge the Marlborough business community for their ongoing generosity and support of the Marlborough Stroke Club. The support of Cruisies Café, Meaters of Marlborough and Marlborough Auctions (2010) Ltd certainly makes a difference in the lives of our members and stroke affected people in the community. Approximately two months ago Jup Brown, the plumber from Wanaka, running New Zealand raising awareness for the Stroke Foundation and in particular his mate Nick Chisholm

who suffered a severe stroke at the age of 27, ran into Blenheim. Accommodation was donated by East Coast Inn and private homes, as well as lunches from The Store at Kekerengu, Redwood Bakery and The Brick Oven at Rai Valley. Also, A Love Affair restaurant generously sponsored a fundraising dinner. Once again the generosity of the Marlborough business community excelled. On behalf of Marlborough Stroke Club please accept our grateful thanks and appreciation for your support. Vyvienne Dunlop Secretary Marlborough Stroke Club

Customary Permits Dear Ed, Yes, I do mean “Customary Permits” for fishing, illegally, as far as I am concerned. While these ridiculous cod and set-net bans are on for the genuine fisher-person, others obtain the “customary permit” to overfish the normal limits, big time. What a damn rip-off to the average fisher! Generally, the policy states: “Fishing is part of the cultural heritage of Maori. Both recreational and commercial fishing are important to Maori, because they have always fished to feed their whanau, and traditionally kai moana was traded among iwi, hapu and European settlers. New Zealand must uphold Maori fishing rights and customs.” Well, what can one say, but ‘what about the rest of the “Kiwis” here’, who, in my case, have fished recreationally most of my life? Does it not matter about us, then? We just stand on the beach watching, while “customary permit fishers” rip the hell out of the fishery. One is going to get sick and tired of that! This “Customary Permit” rip-off has to be gotten rid of. Common sense should prevail over the cod and set-net ban. Give the fisher back the right to catch their feed. I urge the Minister of Fisheries, Phil Heatley, to grow some balls, and tackle this discriminating policy! Phil Russ

Beautiful Jewellery | Hand Blown NZ Glass | Hand Carved Pounamu Jade

“Three bulls in a glass shop”, is how business partners Belinda Pask, Lyn and Alex Leitch jokingly describe themselves. On September 16 the trio - all Taurians opened their unique seaside jewellery/gift shop, Seaside Gems, on London Quay. Capture the view across from Seaside Gems looking out into the Marlborough Sounds, then take a look into their cabinets and see where the inspiration for the glass and jewellery comes from. There are more than 100 stunning individual displays containing jewellery from all over the world, selected for it’s design, colour and quality. Most of the jewellery is set with semiprecious or precious stones. There are also pounamu greenstone sculptures, stunning glass bowls, vases and ornaments all sourced from renowned designers in New Zealand. Belinda inherited her love of the jewellery trade while working alongside her father Lionel Wilkinson, watchmaker/jeweller in Sleaford, England for seven years. “Since moving to NZ my dream was to own my own shop near the seaside. Together with Alex and Lyn, my dream has been realised with Seaside Gems,” she says. Alex and Lyn have owned several businesses since coming to NZ twenty one years ago and had thought of retiring, but the pull of the retail trade and the chance to live and work in Picton was too strong. All three agree that the response to Seaside Gems has exceeded their expectations and are looking forward to many more years of meeting new customers.

Picton’s Olympic hope

World champion rower Joseph Sullivan is one of the favourites to secure a gold medal for New Zealand at next year’s Olympic Games in London. The Picton product talks to Damian George about his success to date, handling the pressure, and his unique approach to rowing. Above: Joseph Sullivan [front] and Nathan Cohen on their way to winning the World Rowing Championships double sculls gold medal in Bled, Slovenia in August. Inset: Sullivan displays his gold medal.

From a town of little more than 4000 people comes one of New Zealand’s biggest medal hopes at the 2012 London Olympic Games beginning in August. Though he now spends much of his time in Lake Karapiro, world champion rower Joseph Sullivan is a Picton product through and through. Along with his rowing partner Nathan Cohen, Sullivan is a two-time world double sculls champion, having won the title at Karapiro at the end of last year and again in Bled, Slovenia in August this year. It is the sort of form which has many people touting the duo as the team to beat in London, but Sullivan is not buying into any of that. “We kind of don’t look at it like that,” he says of the favourite’s tag. “We take it back to ‘everyone’s at square one’. “Everyone wants to win the same medal. “Everyone’s just trying to do their best and, hopefully, we want it more.” Sullivan and Cohen also scooped two World Cup golds during the year, in Hamburg and

They will then compete in the second and third rounds of the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne and Munich in the middle of the year, before training in Belgium until the Olympics begin. He is still young, but Sullivan says he has not looked beyond London in August. “Everything’s been kind of leading up to that [race] day. “I may keep going and try for Rio [the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero], but I’m not really sure at this stage.”

Marlborough

Citizens Advice Bureau Inc A BIG “Thank you” to our wonderful volunteers providing great service to Marlborough. New volunteers very welcome. Give us a ring at 578 4272 or call in to 25 Alfred Street. You’ll be warmly welcomed.

A big thank you... Birthright Marlborough would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers for their support. Without your assistance we would not be able to provide our services helping single parents and their children live ‘personally satisfying lives’. If you can spare a little time each month, more volunteers are desperately needed!

By Darren Greenwood Aiming to recognise the good works of volunteers is International Volunteers Day, which takes place on December five, with a special breakfast in Blenheim. The Marlborough region has more than 100 non-profit organisations registered with Volunteer Marlborough, a body which aims to co-ordinate and assist voluntary groups, though manager Judy Doyle is sure there will be many other unregistered groups. Volunteer Marlborough will again stage a breakfast for 40 volunteers, this year choosing governance, to recognise the efforts of board members, which are often forgotten in place of the works done by managers and more front-line helpers. “These organisations cannot operate without governance. We have a number of organisations

Luncheon thanks members and volunteers Siblings Kath Worthington and Ray Hope had the honour of cutting the Christmas cake for the Marlborough Community Committee of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind’s annual Christmas luncheon yesterday. This social event is highly anticipated by members and volunteers and serves as a way of thanking them for their support and contributions from the past year. The cake was kindly made and donated by Mary Parker.

who will nominate a board member for the breakfast,” says Judy. At the breakfast at Blenheim’s Scenic Circle Hotel, Mayor Alistair Sowman will also be present. “He’s a very strong supporter of volunteerism in the community,” she continues. Doyle says the economic situation is creating a greater need for voluntary groups, especially foodbanks and budgeting services, but more people are helping out. “People are not working as much and they use the time to stay connected. We are certainly seeing more skilled people coming forward and offering their help,” she says. In return, volunteers get as much as they give. “For young people especially, that helps them build connections with the community and develop

a resume. “The experience of helping can provide them with a reference and it is quite valuable for them to do that,” Judy adds. Lynn Weir, manager of Birthright agrees, also noting how volunteers are an essential part of operations. Her organisation which helps single parents has eight volunteers in addition to two paid staff. Six volunteers sit on the committee, while two go out visiting offering community support, such as sharing a cuppa with stressed parents. Birthright also has a volunteer who offers free counselling. And while volunteering might be good for the CV, there are other rewards. “I think the volunteers get some satisfaction in knowing they are giving. The biggest thing for volunteers is the reward they get for helping,” Lynn adds.

INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY CELEBRATINg 10 YEARs Of ThE VOLUNTEER

DECEMBER 5, 2011

Going the extra mile Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk

“Young retired people still have a lot to give, so why not give volunteer work a go”, says Blenheim volunteer John Jordan. John Jordan has always kept busy and worked hard throughout his life, so when he retired from Safe Air, Woodbourne last year he began searching for a new interest. “I had all of this energy and desire to give something back to the community, so I visited Volunteer Marlborough to find out about how I could become a volunteer,” he says.

John was referred to Cancer Society Marlborough who put him through a day course, equipping him with the knowledge and practical skills needed to become a volunteer driver. “Things like learning to safely lift patients from their wheelchairs into the car and vice versa, as well as confidentiality and general codes of practice,” John says. From this John began his volunteer role as a driver, transporting cancer patients to the hospital for their medical appointments. “The key I believe in being a good volunteer is to have a lot of empathy for people and what they are going through. “Safety is paramount of course, but making them feel good about the journey to the hospital and putting a smile on their faces is really important,” he says. Going the extra mile for people

also makes volunteering worthwhile, John says. “My wife and I decided to go away for a few days holiday, and where we were going we knew that the mother of someone I drove for the Cancer Society lived nearby. “So we offered to take him to his mother’s house and bring him back when we left for home. “These are only little things but they can make a big difference to someone who doesn’t have a lot of family in Marlborough,” he says. Today, John not only drives for Cancer Sociey Marlborough, but also for Red Cross delivering meals on wheels and driving the community van. “Volunteering has evolved to something I really enjoy now. It doesn’t take up a lot of your time but makes such a difference to organisations which rely on volunteers,” he says.

THANK YOU The Marlborough Family Budgeting Service would like to thank all their Committee members and Volunteer Budget Advisers for the hard work they do in assisting our service to provide free budgeting advice to the community. Have you thought about becoming a Budget Adviser? We will be running our next training course for Budget Advisers in February 2012. For further information, please contact Fiona on, 578 2006 or email, budget@mfbs. org.nz, or call into Room 1, Marlborough Community House, 25 Alfred St, Blenheim.

Thank You With the Christchurch earthquake still all too clear in our minds, we have been reminded of the valuable role played by our community volunteers. I’d like to pay particular tribute to everyone who has responded in any way to this major event and to the other civil emergencies which have called on our community resilience and our spirit. How fortunate we are to have so many amongst us who are generous with their time, their talent and their expertise. At the same time I want to acknowledge and thank all those who quietly serve us all in so many other ways; through the sports codes and the clubs, the community services and the events – all those things which contribute to the social wellbeing of Marlborough.

GORDYS FLYTRAP FITTING® Also available from CRT, PGGWrightson

keeping those ‘nasties’ away from your home...

Flies can’t resist There is nothing more frustrating than having to constantly swat away flies, chasing them from your food or seeing them cover the ceilings and walls with their offensive brown ‘poop’ spots. But for local man Gordy McCallum, flies have brought him both inspiration and success with his specially designed and developed flytrap fitting. The award winning design provides an easy-to-use solution to fly problems. The way it works is very simple. Find a container or jar, place water and bait at the bottom, place fitting overtop and set out in a well lit area – no need for pestsicides, insecticides or pest control sprays for it to work. In the height of summer and when used correctly, Gordys Flytrap Fitting can catch on average five flies per minute, which is over a week equates to 15 litres, and attract flies from over a kilometre away. • The fitting is made from polycarbonate, UV protected for strength and durability.

• The large recess before the entry point allows flies to enter the trap at 70mm from the window, giving more space for flies to move away from the entry point. • The grill is to allow a greater volume of scent to exit and allows trapped flies walking on the window to investigate fresh air without finding the exit. The grill also allows the airflow to reduce the internal trap temperature if placed in direct sunlight. • When placing the trap in position place the blade at 90 degrees to the prevailing wind. • In air movement the blade, 20mm above the window, creates low pressure or venturi thus drawing the scent from the container. • When using a 10 litre paint pail or similar with a recessed lid, the rain will top-up water lost through evaporation. BLACK DEATH Kill insects in your home or business with the original, kiwi-invented automatic insect control system from

Keep pests out and let the fresh air in Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Insects don’t need an invite to enter your home. As you open your windows and doors to let the fresh summer air in, mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches and spiders enter your home. Renwick based business MagicSeal has a range of quality magnetic insect screens to help you control insects in an environmentally friendly way. Owner and operator Rodger Winter says many recent complaints have resulted from a high number of mosquitoes in urban areas. “Most enquiries I am receiving at the moment are because people want to keep out the mosquitoes. “Flies and cockroaches are also causes of complaint, so this is where our magnetic insect screens are very

effective,” he says. The benefits of using magnetic insect screens are their easy application, ability to be colour matched to existing joinery, easy corner tabs for pulling the screen off and their flexibility. The screen adheres to the perimeter of the fixed window frame on the inside of the window and does not restrict the view. The screens are held in place by MagicSeal’s unique Magnetic Sealing System and are custom made to fit each individual window by Rodger. “I offer a free measure and quote as well as showing people a demonstration screen so they can see the product for themselves. “Your home is a healthier, more comfortable place to live in, when you can keep the pests out, but let the fresh air in.”

Big numbers for marathon >mar athon By Damian George Numbers for the New World Marlborough Marathon were already well up on last year as of yesterday afternoon, with one day still left for people to enter the event. Race director Pete Halligan said yesterday just under 1000 people had entered Saturday’s annual event so far, compared to about 850 competitors last year. “Events around the country are down [in numbers] considerably, so having any sort of increase or no decrease is probably a reflection of the event,” Mr Halligan said. He says nearly 100 entries have been received for the 42.2km full marathon, while a number of international entries have been received across the board. The event also comprises a 21.1km, 10km and 5km race, and a 2km Kids Mini Marathon. Mr Halligan said yesterday nine-time Coast to Coast winner Steve Gurney had expressed an interest in the event, and may be lining up on Saturday. Mr Halligan said he would be stressing to runners on race day that the event was not the Olympics, and competitors needed to be sensible. “People that really push themselves

too hard may suffer and we don’t really want people collapsing on the day because they’ve pushed their bodies beyond what they’re capable of, “ he says. Conditions for the event are shaping up to be ideal, with MetService forecasting a sunny day with a high of 22 degrees Celsius and northwest winds. Mr Halligan says the half and full marathon course provides a mostly traditional flat track with some cross country-type terrain. To enter, go to http://www.marlboroughmarathon.co.nz.

By Damian George The Central Stags got its Ford Trophy one-day cricket campaign off to a disappointing start on Friday, losing to Canterbury by 66 runs in Rangiora. CD was bundled out for 202 in reply to Canterbury’s first innings of 268 for seven, despite being well placed at 144 for two at one stage. Veteran Mathew Sinclair and Ben Smith shared in a 120-run third-wicket partnership after CD had been in early trouble at 24 for two, but the visitors lost their last eight wickets for 58 runs. New ball bowler Matt Henry was the chief destroyer for Canterbury, taking four for 25 from eight overs. For CD, Michael Mason, who came

• Drink stations are at every five kilometres, with either water or High5 sports drinks available. Runners in the half and full marathons are urged to keep hydrated. • Runners are reminded to put on sun block at the start of the race if it is sunny.

New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder seems to be a soft target [no pun intended] for armchair critics because of the extra weight he carries compared to most cricketers. But what t end s to get overlooked is the fact Ryder averages 44.85 in test matches and 36.46 in ODIs, at a strike rate of more than 90. He scored 201 against India in 2010, in 489 minutes [8 hours, 9 minutes]. Some people carry more weight than others, and Ryder is one of those. Here are five examples of top sports people who didn’t let some extra ‘beef’ get in their way.

New World Marlborough Marathon key points:

out of retirement this season, was the best of the bowlers with three for 48 from his ten overs. After just one round of the one-day competition, CD returned to four-day Plunket Shield action yesterday, taking on Auckland in the fourth round of that championship at Colin Maiden Park. CD were well placed at 121 for three early in the second session yesterday afternoon.

world player of the year and two-time World Cup champion and tournament top-scorer - was often mocked for his extra kilos, with Brazil’s president even having a jibe at one point. Shaquille O’Neal: Nineteen years in the NBA, four titles, three finals MVPs, and an Olympic gold medal, ‘Shaq’ was one of basketball’s all-time greats, despite weighing nearly 150kg and constantly turning up to Lakers’ camps out of shape. Mark Greatbatch: Another left-handed New Zealand opening batsman with a slightly jolly belly, ‘Paddybatch’ will always be remembered for his explosive batting in the 1992 Cricket World Cup and his 11hour vigil to save a test against Australia in 1989.

Damian George

John Daly: Easily one of the worst-kept sportsmen on the elite stage, Daly was at one stage on a near whiskey-only diet, but he has been able to win two major golf championships, in 1991 and 1995. Merv Hughes: Proving it’s not just batsmen that can play professional cricket overweight, the burly Australian bowler took more than 200 test wickets, all while looking like he’d just swallowed a dozen beers at last night’s barbecue. Honourable mentions for former Warriors prop Mark Tookey, soccer legend Diego Maradona, baseball deity Babe Ruth, and Hughes’ Australian team mates Shane Warne and David Boon.

Training Blog

The finish line is just ahead Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk is competing in the 10.1km run at the New World Marlborough Marathon in December, and is writing a weekly blog on her training and weight-loss progress.

Wel l here we a re, c o u nt i ng d ow n t h e days to the New World Marlborough Marathon this Saturday. Last week I relaxed my training a little more than I probably should have and only managed three runs. However, this week

I have boosted my efforts and will be running every night in an effort to give myself that little bit extra fitness. Rather than dragging my feet as I did when I first began, I am feeling lighter and more comfortable running and enjoy the feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I won’t be having my final weigh-in or measure with Kustom Fitness until later this week so I won’t be including those results

today, but I am confident that the training I took on for this marathon has made a significant difference to my health and body. Thank you to everyone who has given me positive feedback and supported fundraising efforts and I hope that those people who have been following my blog will be inspired to pick up their own sports shoes and give events such as this marathon a go. Thank you again for your support.

Paddy prepares for southern showdown By Darrell Bate Sixteen of the South Island’s top Super Saloon drivers will gather at Blenheim’s Eastern States Speedway this Friday night, all with the aim of walking away as champion in round one of the Elf Super Cup series for 2011-2012. Local driver Paddy North will again be appearing in his season old Chevrolet powered Holden Monaro, in the hope of improving on his second overall placing in last years series. Although the arrival of some new saloons for Nelson’s Ian Burson and Cromwell’s Ray Stewart may prove threatening, North is confident that his machine like many of the modern field are all up to making the podium. “It could be any of the sixteen of us taking the round, it just comes down to the night and what chances and luck you are dealt,” Paddy says. The series is now in its third year and has five rounds throughout the six month race calendar, touring to Blenheim, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Cromwell. The series has developed a large following as it has become known as a ‘must see’ amongst many of the race fans. Besides following the series around the South in the summer, the Super Saloons will compete in the Nelson hosted National Championship and Christchurch’s NZ Grand Prix in January along with the Super Saloon Masters and South Island Championship, both being held in Blenheim later in the season. Racing will be commencing at Eastern States Speedway at Renwick, 7pm, Friday 2 December, followed by Round 2 on Saturday evening at Nelson’s Top of the South Speedway. The Friday night race programme will also include Saloons, Modifieds, Productions Saloons, Stockcars and Sidechairs, with gates opening at 6pm. A display of the cars and transporters as well as an opportunity to meet drivers will be held at Blenheim Railway Station (opposite Couplands) Friday afternoon between 10am-2pm, whilst results and news can be followed on the event’s own website www.elfsupercup.co.nz
