New covered mall proposed By Damian George Resource consent for a new Countdown supermarket in Redwoodtown and the expansion of the town’s shopping centre has been applied for by Blenheim construction company TH Barnes. The development, which has been in the pipeline for about 15 months, would see a 3500-square-metre supermarket built on the corner of Weld St and Alabama Rd, with the

existing supermarket partitioned for retail tenancies at a later date. TH Barnes director Ian Barnes told The Sun the company officially applied to the Marlborough District Council for resource consent ten days ago. A resource consent hearing is expected to take place within six to nine weeks. Mr Barnes told The Sun the proposed move is

Story and photos by Damian George Former All Black Justin Marshall was among the many people to heap praise on Marlborough’s premier Rugby World Cup 2011 festival last week. The Sky TV commentator was one of several notable guests at the REAL NZ Festival Marlborough Wine and Cuisine show on Thursday, which included the region’s top winemakers and chefs. Also present at Brancott Vineyard on a cloudy but calm day was IRB Scottish Rugby Union representative Bill Nolan, and a group of international guests being hosted by the NZ2011 office. But the biggest raps came from Marshall, who had always wanted to attend the annual Marlborough Food and Wine Festival in February during his playing days. Training commitments with Super Rugby franchise the Crusaders meant he was never able to do so. “I can get a feel for what it must be like in February, when there’s three or four times as many people, “Marshall told The Sun on Thursday. “I love my wine, I love my food, I love to socialise – why wouldn’t you want to be here?” Marshall has been actively promoting the Marlborough region to overseas travellers during the World Cup, an area where he holidays often. “I’ve travelled the world, I’ve

been very lucky, and I’ve never seen something like this area – the views, the natural environment. “You can’t replicate what the Marlborough area and the Sounds has to offer.” Wine Marlborough event manager Andrea Craig told The Sun 50 per cent of the event’s guests were from overseas, with a strong Irish and Welsh contingent making up a large chunk of that. “The feedback so far has been very positive. “Everyone enjoyed a really relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to talk to people about the wine and the cuisine on offer.” Mrs Craig says she is not sure whether the event, created specifically for the World Cup, will feature on Marlborough’s event calendar again. “People did like the event concept and we will have a look at it and see how we can incorporate parts of it into other events in the future.” Musical acts on Thursday included London-born blues guitarist Paul Ubana Jones, New Zealand indie pop artist Anna Coddington, local singer-songwriter Sarah Brown and Wellington pop-rock band Supermodel. A Chef’s Table featuring five leading New Zealand chefs attracted a keen audience for much of the day.

Frost fighting underway By Damian George Marlborough vineyard owners are beginning to take frost fighting measures to protect grape buds as low morning temperatures hit the region. Brancott Estate viticulturist Andrew Naylor says frost fans have been in operation on the most susceptible areas of the company’s vineyard recently. He says using frost fans on vulnerable areas is the most effective way of protecting grape buds at this stage and hopes helicopters

Mount Riley head winemaker Matt Murphy says his company has not used any machinery as yet, and has instead used passive frost protection methods such as keeping ground temperatures warm. “We’re reluctant to use frost fans until we get a pretty good chance of getting a frost because fans are obviously quite contentious at the moment.”

Motel bookings down during Cup By Damian George A struggling economy, the Christchurch earthquake and perceived ‘price gouging’ are among reasons cited by Marlborough motels for lower than usual bookings during Rugby World Cup 2011. A nationwide survey conducted by the Motel Association of New Zealand [MANZ] recently shows nearly half of the motels which took part are experiencing fewer bookings than normal during the tournament. Marlborough is no exception, with more than half of the rooms across the region unsold for much of the tournament, the survey shows. Aston Court Motel manager Noel Noble told The Sun numbers at his motel had dropped dramatically since the beginning of the global tournament. “The last three weeks of September were significantly down on last year,” he says.

“The media has reported on supposed price gouging, particularly in main centres where rugby matches have been scheduled, and this has been perceived as being endemic throughout the country.” Mr Noble says this is not the case in Marlborough. He says wineries and vineyards appear to be the only busy businesses in Marlborough, as they have benefited from an “endless procession” of campervan traffic passing through the region. “On the whole, the accommodation sector has missed out throughout the country.” Commodore Court Motel owner Bruce Huffadine says his motel has been down 10 per cent in guest numbers during the World Cup period. “This hope that we were all going to have a bonanza and be able to go on a world cruise after the World Cup, that was just a dream by somebody. It certainly

hasn’t happened here,” he told The Sun. He says the low numbers may be partly due to the Christchurch earthquake in February, as many cancellations came shortly after that occurred. “And also the economic climate [is a factor],” he says. “Last January, in the school holidays, we had only one family with children stay in the whole of the month.” Spring Creek Motels manager Erica Ticehurst says her motel has been down 50 per cent on bookings on previous months during the World Cup. She agreed inflated prices in the North Island had not helped, with campervans perceived a cheaper option, and people were also struggling economically. Fifteen per cent of MANZ members took part in the survey across the country. The survey had a margin of error of two per cent.

Great Crusade invades Blenheim

By Damian George Any reported claims of trans-Tasman hostility during Rugby World Cup 2011 have certainly not reached two Australian travellers touring the country as part of The Great Crusade. Jason Hegarty and Amanda Jeffs, from Brisbane, made their way through Kaikoura and Blenheim last week as one of 25 pairs of Wallabies supporters taking part in the Qantas tour, which follows the national side. Jason and Amanda were preparing for a visit to Wither Hills Winery when The Sun spoke to them on Wednesday. “Everyone has just been so friendly, the shopkeepers - everyone,” Amanda says of the tour to date. “We’re having a chat with everyone we’ve come across, and there’s just been really good vibes. “You get the odd person yelling ‘Go the All Blacks’, but you expect that.” Jason and Amanda won the oportunity to take part in the second of the two Great Crusade tours - the 12-day South Island Adventure, which ended in Wellington on October 10.

They sent a series of 12 videos into Australian morning television show Today explaining why they were the country’s ultimate Wallabies supporters. “We’ve travelled to New Zealand a few times and we can’t speak highly enough of the diversity and just the scenery and everything,” Amanda says. “It’s just really so beautiful. You don’t get a lot of that back in Australia.” Marlborough’s renowned sunny climate has not quite lived up to its reputation during the pair’s visit, but its cuisine certainly has. Amanda says Kaikoura’s crayfish has been the highlight of the pair’s culinary experience so far. Jason may not win himself too many more friends though with comments like these: “I know New Zealand’s had a bit of a knock with [Daniel] Carter being out - hopefully, that’s going to be their Achilles heel.” Australia will play the All Blacks in the tournament’s second semi-final in Auckland on Sunday night.

Burger King property sold

Blenheim’s new Burger King property in Main St has been sold to a locally-based couple in an off-market deal. The sale was made by real estate company Bayleys Marlborough. Bayleys Marlborough commercial and business agent Grant Baxter told The Sun he approached the Nelsonbased owner-developer soon after the fast food restaurant began trading in May. The couple does not wish to be named.

Bayleys Marlborough was recently involved in the sale of Blenheim’s Mitre 10 Mega property in Alabama Rd. That property was listed by Bayleys Marlborough and sold in conjunction with Bayleys Nelson. Mr Baxter says the Burger King sale is another encouraging sign for Marlborough business. “There is a strong underlying confidence in the commercial business sector for well-maintained properties that are well leased to excellent tenants.”

Cold September for Blenheim Blenheim has experienced its third-coldest September since records began in 1932, National Climate Centre statistics show. Figures released in the centre’s monthly report show the average minimum air temperature in Blenheim in September was 2.3C, 2.5C lower than normal. Average temperatures for the month were also lower than normal in Nelson, West Coast, Fiordland and South Canterbury, and much of the North Island.

The Moa Ten Year Beer is a barrel-aged cherry lambic made in a unique traditional Belgium style. Just 180 specially labelled bottles have been produced, and Moa founder Josh Scott says those lucky enough to get their hands on a bottle should take their hands off the bottle and put it into a cellar, pronto. “Our Ten Year Beer already tastes great, but the complex nature of the brew means that it’s designed to taste best after a decade of cellar aging. The boat was placed in the Wairau River for the first time on Sunday, October 2 and was blessed by Rosemary Powell. Despite the miserable wet conditions, spirits were high as team members prepared to paddle their new boat after three years of fundraising for it. The boat is a new competition fibre glass model built to international specifications and was purchased for $13,000, says Simply the Breast dragon boat team secretary Les Barrow. “This boat is lighter and more stable in the water and having it means the team will be training with the boat they will compete in,” he says. Headed by coach Walter Waaka who will be in his second year of coaching the team, is made up of local women who have come together from all walks of life with one thing in common, a diagnosis of breast cancer. Baby loss week In the 43 days it takes for 48 games of rugby to be played and the Rugby World Cup to be won, 86 babies will die in New Zealand. This is the message of this year’s Baby Loss Awareness Week which runs from October 9-15 and culminates in International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on October 15. Here in Marlborough the local S.A.N.D.S group will be holding a memorial service on Saturday, October 15 at Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors from 6pm. Baby Loss Awareness Week will also be an opportunity to let the public know about S.A.N.D.S and

the work it does in the community. It is a voluntary, non-profit organisation that provides support to the many families who face the death of a baby or infant. “Once again we will try to attract the attention of the general public in acknowledging that while our babies may have been tiny, their lives were not,” says president of S.A.N.D.S Marlborough Anna Simpson. Dear Ed, It was encouraging to read that there are others who do not want another liquor outlet High Street East. (The Sun, October 5) Here is a good alternative. How many know that in Marlborough there are nearly 60 species of plants that are endemic to our province and therefore originally found no where else in the world? A garden of some of these plants, tree and small shrubs, (our brooms are fantastic in flower), given the right micro-climate, would be an asset to the area and of interest to locals and visitors. Theft, wilful damage and a stolen sheep Auckland offender arrested A 20-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested in Blenheim on Friday morning in relation to an aggravated robbery in Auckland on July 25. Later, a 40-year-old self-employed man was arrested for possession of cannabis and receiving a stolen sheep. At 6pm on Fr iday, a 24 -yea r-old unemployed man was arrested on a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in Blenheim District Court.

Disqualified drivers behind the wheel Two men were arrested for driving while disqualified on Saturday and one also charged with drink driving. The dual offender, a 33-year-old painter, was arrested at 4.35am. The second man, a 22-year-old vineyard worker, was arrested at 10.25pm. A 20-year-old unemployed man was arrested and charged with wilful damage after allegedly smashing a letterbox at a house in Picton on Saturday night. Earlier, a 43-year-old female receptionist and 42-year-old male road worker were arrested for offensive behaviour following an incident on Scott St, Blenheim.

Operation Christmas

Also on Saturday, a 33-year-old male labourer was arrested for offensive behaviour, and a 41-year-old unemployed man was arrested in relation to a burglary at a Mayfield property shortly after midnight on Friday.

Spate of drunken-related arrests Three people were ar rested for drunken-related incidents and two people charged with breaching the liquor ban on Sunday afternoon. Four people were arrested at 2.30pm. They were: two unemployed men, aged 44 and 47, for disorderly behaviour after being found in an “extremely” intoxicated state on Alfred Street; a 42-year-old unemployed woman for breaching the liquor ban and for breaching her community work; and a 59-year-old unemployed man for breaching the liquor ban. A 41-year-old male sickness beneficiary was arrested five minutes later for breaching his bail conditions after being found intoxicated, also on Alfred St. At 11.55pm, a 20-year-old female barista was arrested for wilful damage after allegedly smashing two windows at an address in Townsend following a domestic-related incident.

Former Central Districts cricketer Rod Thomas fears cricket is “a dying sport” in New Zealand. The Picton-based former fast bowler, probably better known to people in the area as a member of the Picton volunteer fire brigade, will be a part of the Picton Cricket Club’s 150th anniversary celebrations at the end of this summer. It is expected to include names such as former New Zealand international Lance Cairns and Sky TV rugby commentator Tony Johnson. Rod, who played 16 first-class matches between 1975 and 1978, says cricket’s popularity appears to have waned since his playing days. “It seems to be a dying sport,” he says. “I think that’s because of the time it takes to play a game and the commitment you’ve got to put in. “Like most sports, what you put in is what you can get out of it.” Rod, who picked up 38 first-class wickets for CD, says the standard of club cricket has certainly dropped across the country, but it

To me, we’re invincible as a team. “We’re family first, then employees - without the support of both, you wouldn’t be a volunteer brigade.”

Safe boating tips Thousands of boaters, anglers and water sports enthusiasts will be enjoying the Marlborough Sounds now that the weather is warming up, but before heading out onto the water think about what safety measures you will need to take.

Safe boating tips:

• Check the weather forecast and tides before leaving. • Never overload the boat. • Ensure each passenger has a correctly fitted and approved lifejacket. • Check the boat, engine and equipment before leaving. • Guard against fire. • Avoid consuming alcohol when boating - don’t drink and drive. • Carry spare fuel, anchor, bailer, torch and warm gear. • Tell someone where you are going, and when you plan to return. • Take two means of communication:- VHF, flares, EPIRB, cellphone (in a plastic bag).

It is the skipper’s responsibility to ensure that lifejackets are worn in situations such as in rough water, dangerous sea conditions and during an emergency. There are approved lifejackets for all types of boating activities and it is essential that the correct type is used. See your boating retailer for the most suitable option. Only use lifejackets which are in good condition. Exposure to sunlight can cause the colour to fade, making it more difficult to spot in the sea, and can cause the material to weaken very quickly. The most important thing is to have a lifejacket that fits you correctly and is suitable for your boating activity.

Mental Health Awareness Week

10 - 16 October

Mental Health Awareness week this year falls just after the Rugby World Cup 2011 quarter finals and ends during the semis. So, to embrace and celebrate team sports, the week’s theme has been titled;

“Get in the game – Training for happiness” Whether or not you are a die-hard rugby fan, a New Zealander or an international visitor during September and October there are things you can do to support your wellbeing. If you are a rugby fan, this could be vitally important come the results at the end of October.

As any top coach would say, training makes you play a better game, and it’s no different for your mental health. By consistently incorporating the winning ways to wellbeing in your life, you can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Strategies for happiness: Introduce these simple strategies into your life and you will feel the benefits. Remember to start small and work at it - good things take time. 1) It feels good to give. Everyone has something to offer so how will you play your part? 2) Do what you can, enjoy what you do, be active and move your mood.

3) Take notice of the world around you and savour the moment. Find the simple things that bring you joy. 4) Keep learning throughout your life. Seek out new experiences and challenge yourself. 5) People are stronger when they pull together, so think about who could you connect with today.

The centre is open to the public and there will be a morning cooking class and sketch group as well as an afternoon poetry session at 26 Percy Street, Blenheim.

It appears, despite their best efforts, and that of other concerned parents and supporters, that these kids are being denied their right to join a club and compete, I believe, due to their previous support and association with a trespassed coach. Surely, as South Canterbury coach Steve Dries said, these administrators need to get the chip off their shoulder and administer tennis for all who live in Marlborough and not just an elite privileged few. There are none on Nelson street despite the fact there are over a thousand school children crossing it twice daily and only two on Redwood street. The lack of pedestrian crossings makes it very hazardous for children and older people to even consider attempting going on the other side of the street.

We pay for streets and roads with our rates and other taxes but we are not given the opportunity to walk safely across them because of drivers’ selfishness and intolerance. Maybe a few more pedestrian crossings and some traffic lights would satisfy “Getting There Slowly”? There is no local 30-40 km/h club, just people respecting the speed limits and keeping up with traffic. By the way the average car occupancy rate is only slightly above one person. Which means one car equals just one person. What a waste! There are enough parking spaces in this town, only too many cars. Halfback holds key for All Blacks Piri Weepu is the Pero Cameron of New Zealand rugby. The two New Zealand legends [yes – legends] may be chalk and cheese physically, but their attributes and big-game t emp era ment have m a ny parallels. Just as former Tall Black ‘PC’ could innocuously knock down a three-pointer, produce a miracle pass without looking or pull off something special just when his team needed it, so too can Weepu seemingly pull out the big plays at crucial moments. The halfback’s performance for the All Blacks in their World Cup quarter-final win over Argentina on Sunday was as crucial as it was masterful.

As he had done for the Hurricanes in this year’s Super 15, the halfback took on the responsibility of kicking goals with consummate ease. Sunday was classic ‘finals football’ and, though the All Blacks expectedly pulled away from a spirited Argentina in the last 15 minutes, it was Weepu’s goal-kicking which put them in a position to do so. Six penalties in a row, and then a seventh later on, made sure this match was not closer than it needed to be. And the best part is Weepu does it all with such a minimum of fuss - much like Cameron. By Damian George Disabled Italian distance swimmer Salvatore Cimmino has successfully completed his epic crossing of Cook Strait. Salvatore entered the water at Makara at 8.47am on Monday and reached Perano Head at 5.05pm – 8 hours and 18 minutes later. He is the first amputee to swim the Strait and the first person to complete the crossing in October. “I’m exhausted but very, very happy. We have built another bridge and are now closer to a world without barriers,” Salvatore said immediately after the swim. “This is about disability awareness and people should know disability is no barrier to great achievement, as it is no barrier to everyday life.” New Zealand distance swimming legend Philip Rush, who supported Salvatore through the race, said conditions were challenging.

“The air and water temperature are the reasons why this hasn’t been done in October before,” he said. “It was very cold out there. This is a hard swim at the best of times and Salvatore has put in a truly champion effort. The water temperature is approximately 12 degrees has been averaging between 12 and 14 degrees outside the water. Former All Black and Italy rugby coach John Kirwan, a good friend of Salvatore, says he was sad not to be celebrating with him but incredibly proud of his achievement. “He was so determined to conquer the Cook Strait - you only have to meet him to understand what he is doing this for,” Kirwan said. The Cook Strait crossing is part of Salvatore’s Swim the Seas of the Globe campaign to promote disability awareness.
