ALL BLACK HYPE:

Blenheim rugby fans Ashton Blake-Barlow and Bobby Jackson were ecstatic with the All Blacks’ 20-6 Rugby World Cup semi-final win over Australia on Sunday, and were not afraid to let everyone know. The friends were spotted walking around Blenheim waving and receiving ‘toots’ of support from motorists also celebrating the famous win. The All Blacks play France in the tournament final on Sunday night.

By Damian George Blenheim woman Krissy Fisher has been named the South Island’s top Weight Watchers Healthy Life contestant for 2011, but she is not done yet. Krissy returned on Sunday from the Healthy Life Awards national judging week in Sydney, where she joined North Island representative Amanda

Blennerhassett and five Australian state representatives. The trip included a $1000 shopping spree, fitness sessions with former Australian Olympic sprinter Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, and beauty makeovers. But Krissy, who has lost 48 kilograms since deciding to change her life

two years ago, is now eyeing the big prize - a holiday for two to the Cook Islands for the overall winner. That person will be named at a gala in Sydney on November 24. “I’d love to win it, then its my chance to showcase to people that you can lose 40-odd kilos,” she says. Continued Page 3.

prime Minister John Key (centre), flanked by pernod-ricard managing director fabian partigliani (left) and national wineries manager Gerry Gregg, places a time capsule to mark the official opening of the Brancott estate Heritage Centre on Monday.

Key launches Brancott Heritage Centre Story and photo by Damian George New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has formally congratulated Marlborough’s Brancott Estate on its “beautiful” Heritage Centre building launched at a ceremony on Monday night. Mr Key, New Zealand’s Minister of Tourism, flew in to Blenheim on Monday to speak at the launch and place a time capsule to mark the occasion. He says the complex presents a fantastic opportunity to further grow the tourism sector in both Marlborough and New Zealand. “People from all parts of the world come to enjoy New Zea-

land wine, and this place can be where they come to learn about the history of New Zealand wine and Brancott wines,” he says. “Can I just congratulate everyone that’s been involved - it really is a beautiful building.” Mr Key also noted the wine industry is an “incredibly important” one for New Zealand’s tourism sector, and praised Brancott Estate’s contribution to Rugby World Cup 2011 through its role as an official sponsor. “Brancott wines are on show at The Cloud - our fan zone on Queens Wharf in Auckland. “Day after day, theres great Brancott wines being served

to tens of thousands of people coming through and enjoying that.” Brancott Estate chief winemaker Patrick Materman says there is a very strong sense of pride within the company about the new attraction. “This is a special building overlooking overlooking the site of Marlborough’s first plantings of Sauvignon Blanc.” “[The centre] is not only a celebration of the past, but of an exciting future that lies ahead, and it’s making a bold statement about our commitment to the future of the Marlborough wine industry.”

History repeats The 2011 Rugby World Cup final will be a repeat of the last time the tournament was held in New Zealand, with the All Blacks to meet France at Auckland’s Eden Park. New Zealand beat Australia 20-6 in its semifinal and France held off Wales 9-8 to set up a re-match of the 1987 final, which New Zealand won 29-9.

Retailer faces prosecution One cigarette retailer in Marlborough could face prosecution by the Ministry of Health after allegedly selling cigarettes to a minor recently. A Controlled Purchase Operation [CPO] with volunteers under the age of 18 was carried out by the Nelson-Marlborough Public Health Service in Nelson and Tasman on October 12 and Marlborough on October 13. The volunteers attempted to buy cigarettes from 46 outlets across the three regions. It has been the Ministry of Health’s policy to consider prosecution following a sale of tobacco to a minor. A case file and evidence will be prepared and sent to the Ministry for a decision.

$ BEFORE and aFTER: Krissy Fisher’s amazing transformation after losing 48 kilos.

From Page 1. “At the the end of the day, I won the day I lost the weight, but [winning the competition] would be the cherry on the top of the icing on the cake.” Krissy says she felt like a “rockstar” during her week in Sydney, as the seven contestants were given the royal treatment. “Coming from a little town, it was amazing - I felt too spoilt.” “It was good meeting other people and hearing the other stories, it’s very inspiring meeting

people on the same wavelength as you who what you’ve been through.” As well as attending Weight Watchers in Blenheim, Krissy completed a ten-week course at Blenheim’s Kustom Fitness, and now exercises regularly. She says she feels like a new person since dropping the weight. “When I smile now, I’m not hiding behind anything - it’s actually true.

“And I think when you’re happy within, it makes everything else work.” Krissy says her goals now are more fitness-oriented, and she is considering competing in the half-marathon at the New World Marlborough Marathon in December. She also plans to become a Weight Watcher’s leader to help inspire others. “I’d like to get it out there that [losing weight] is possible and, if you really want it, you can do it.”

Marlborough prepared for oil spill By Damian George Marlborough is well-equipped to deal with a “small to average” oil spill in the Sounds area but would need outside help to manage a spill like the one which occurred near Tauranga recently, a marine expert says. The 47,000-tonne cargo ship Rena ran aground off the coast of Tauranga two weeks ago, spilling oil and containers into the sea in what has been called New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster. Maritime NZ Marlborough regional marinal spill on-scene commander Dave Baker told The Sun Marlborough is as prepared as it can be for an oil spill here, but much depends on its size and location. “In the Marlborough Sounds and Queen Charlotte Sounds, we’d have a pretty good chance of booming the ship [trapping

the oil with plastic booms] and probably doing some containing [of the oil],” he says. “But in off-shore areas outside the inner Sounds - Dryden Bay and areas like that - tides would just rip away booms and flatten them.” Mr Baker, who has undergone 12 years of training through Maritime NZ courses, says booming is only an option in very calm seas. He says the situation in Tauranga “couldn’t really have been any worse”, having occurred in open and rough waters. “This situation is very, very dangerous. The ship’s gone up at high speed, it’s been breaking up right from the start, and containers have gone up. “When it’s as severe as this, it’s very, very difficult to do much in the initial stages. Sometimes it’s impossible to

stop the oil coming to shore.” He says the first priority if a spill was to occur here would be the safety of those involved. “In terms of how well prepared we are, I think we’re well up there,” he says. “As a team, we practise once or twice a year, with reasonably serious deployments. “But it depends on the circumstances - how bad the weather is and how bad the water is.” Mr Baker says equipment is on hand in Marlborough and in Nelson, while gear can be flown in from Wellington if needed. Emergency gear stored at Port Marlborough includes a recovery vessel [currently being used in Tauranga], skimmers, frame tanks, fence boom, rapid deployment boom, land sea boom, and dispersants.

Taking on Cook Strait

Read the Sun online!

Marlborough’s truly local newspaper.

By Damian George Scott Hantz and Joshua McKay may be about to embark on the longest journey ever undertaken to fetch a good latte. The Blenheim duo, aged 20 and 33 respectively, plan to kayak the length of the Cook Strait in January next year to raise money for the Life Flight Trust emergency service. But that is not the only reason they are crossing the Strait - the running joke between the two is they are undertaking the voyage to get a taste of the capital’s brew. “People were asking us why we were going to Wellington and Josh said ‘for a nice latte in the capital’,” Scott told The Sun. “It sort of stuck and everyone thinks we’re going to Wellington for this latte.” The reality, though, is that Scott and Joshua are taking on the challenge for a far more serious reason - to raise much-needed funds for the charity service. They hope to raise $20,000. The Life Flight Trust relies heavily on public funding with each rescue mission requiring about $2500 from the community. “We were quite keen to sponsor and raise money for a cause - we’re both quite passionate about that sort of thing - and somehow the Cook Strait thing came up and that was it.” The two have been training twice a week on the Taylor River to prepare themselves for the expected six-hour ride, and were planning to commence a weekly four-hour session on Saturday. Josh, originally from Nelson, has been kayaking since he was 16, while Scott has always kept fit through other exercise. Scott says the biggest challenge will be the erratic waters, which are widely regarded

as some of the most unpredictable in the world. Perhaps nothing could prepare them, though, for a possible encounter with one of the sea’s largest mammals. “We’ve got to be careful of orca whales it’s their migration period [from Antarctica] from November to January-February,” Scott says. “They swim in pods of 60 and like to play with the boats.” If successful, Josh and Scott will be the second pair from the Marlborough Community College to complete the journey,

after Aaron Senior and Brad Huntley did it two years ago. Scott is a hospitality student and Joshua is a cooking tutor. They have so far obtained from sponsorship from Westpac, Stirling Sports, Interislander and Coastguard New Zealand. Marlborough-based Sea Kayak Adventures will lend them the double-fibre-glass boat, while Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 has given them free use of its pool for training purposes. The Life Flight Trust helps four people in Marlborough every week.

ASB get theatre naming rights ASB is to be the naming rights partner for the new Civic Theatre in Blenheim. To be known as the ASB Theatre, the new building will be constructed next to the Marlborough Convention Centre, completing a “world-class” entertainment and convention destination for the Marlborough region. It will replace Marlborough’s existing theatre, operated by the Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust, which has been in operation for nearly 30 years. ASB executive general manager for culture and community Linley Wood says the bank is pleased to be involved with a project which contributes to Marlborough’s community spirit. “We are committed to supporting the local communities in which we operate, so we are particularly pleased the new theatre in Blenheim will be available for use by school groups and performing arts groups from across the region, as well as

visiting international artists.” As well as its dedicated performing arts component, the theatre will contribute a further 700 seats to the adjoining Convention Centre’s capacity. Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust deputy chairman Peter Mark says the new theatre will further cement Marlborough as one of New Zealand’s most desirable convention destinations for both national and international delegates. The Civic Theatre Trust engaged architects Shand Sheldon to develop a design for the new theatre, which will be put out to tender in the first half of 2012. As well as ASB’s ten-year commitment, the development of the ASB Theatre will be funded by private donations and investment from the Marlborough District Council. The existing theatre will continue operating until the new facility is completed in 2014.

ASB has got naming rights for the proposed new Marlborough Civic Theatre.

Holiday parks were the biggest mover, with 10,310 guest nights representing an increase of more than 95.3 per cent on last year. Hotels took the biggest hit, down 29.8 per cent, while backpackers were up 23.1 per cent and motels up 10.3 per cent.

Cheers all round after local operators complete study A number of local business operators were able to let down their hair and celebrate recently after completing the Certificate in Applied Small Business Growth and Development. The free practical evening programme ran for the past 24 weeks helping each of the students to identify two areas of their business they wanted to improve. Tutor Graham Bradley says; “It’s been great to work with business operators who have the passion and commitment to drive their business forward. “It’s great to see Marlborough businesses succeeding in these challenging times,” he says. Chris Downs, owner of Safety and Health Services says the knowledge gained was invaluable. “This programme has really advanced my knowledge of business management.”

Extra social workers ‘great news’ for Marlborough Kaikoura Electorate MP Colin King says the government’s decision to increase the number of social workers in schools nationwide is great news for the electorate. Social development minister Paula Bennett announced recently plans to introduce 149 full-time social workers in lowdecile primary schools across the country. Mr King says the move, which will see the number of schools covered by social workers jump from 285 to 673 nationally, is a major boost for students here. “This means that children in all decile 1-3 schools in Marlborough will now receive social work support,” he says. “The benefits of this will be tremendous for schools, children, and families in our area.” “With more social workers, children in the Kaikoura electorate will be better protected,” he says. Marlborough schools set to receive the additional support include Blenheim School, Mayfield School and Picton School.

Motorcycle rally set for this weekend

RALLy ORGANiSERS: Al Rees and Aleeze Toombs of Canvastown and Rachel and Tony Greig of Nelson.

By Celeste Lodewyk It’s here! The Tattley Rappet Moto Guzzi Rally is coming to Spring Creek this weekend, bringing together Moto Guzzi motorcycle enthusisasts from all over New Zealand. The rally’s 16-year history has made it a hugely anticipated event and as a double celebration, the rally is marking the 90th anniversary of the Moto Guzzi’s foundation. Organisers Al Rees and Aleeze Toombs of Canvastown and Rachel and Tony Greig of Nelson have spent months organising the event and are thrilled it has finally arrived. Spring Creek’s Junction Hotel will

be the focus point of the rally which kicks off this Friday where riders will meet. On Saturday there will be a poker run through the Queen Charlotte Drive coming back through Havelock and Rapaura Road, and Sunday the rally will wind down with a 300km ride followed by a get together for the riders. Door sale registrations will still be taken on Friday for anyone still wanting to be part of the rally. For the public there will be a Moto Guzzi motorcycle display on Saturday at 3:30pm and a number of demo bikes available to try out provided by Triumph NZ.

In Las Vegas, then Seattle to watch Oasis for my 21st.

I was in Christchurch for my 17th birthday; and at the same time it was my Grandads 65th birthday That was pretty special.

My daughter threw me a surprise birthday party at Raupo. That was a fabulous family night.

My 50th birthday was very special. At the Old Club with family and friends, listening and dancing to swing music.

Our friends took us out to a game lodge, it was a surprise for my birthday.

My husband filled my lounge with balloons, some had presents, some had funny tasks to do, and some with confetti. It was really special and meant a lot.

the vicinity would suggest to me the driver is not confident or competent enough to be on the road. The fact that they also failed to signal when finally making their turn only underlines this fact in my mind. And this is not the only time I have had this experience around Blenheim. Any traffic officer would have pulled that driver over and asked appropriate questions. I wonder if this is an appropriate time to make a comment about older drivers... mmmm... better not. It’s amazing how fast they can move when stirred up. I think I can hear the sound of a thousand ink wells rattling... Just to be clear: I have no intention of driving over the speed limit anywhere. Yes he’s right! And he added notice how ‘Mr Teflon’ (John Key) has left all the talking to his minister Stephen Joyce to try to explain. Hmmm. Don Coyote

Since the Tuppa Waka is too late for the RWC, is made of a floating material that will not scratch the Rena and thus cause an unwanted spark to ignite any remaining oil, it could be tied firmy to the stern of the Rena to prevent it sinking when it snaps off. It could remain unmanned as it will be in it’s current location anyway, will benefit a far wider audience than that planned now most RWC supporters have gone home with their teams and will give relief to ALL NZ taxpayers that the $2 mill cost has gone to a recognised and worthy cause. This is exclusive of GST and does not include the daily running cost of $100,000 per day. Wow, that’s a hell of an hourly rate or there are a hell of a lot of people being paid to serve a diminishing crowd who have largely

gone home to watch the remaining games on TV (transport was a wee bit of an issue I understand...but this is a whole new story) Once the rescue mission is successfully accomplished the plastic canoe could be anchored to the bottom of the Astrolab Reef as a fitting reminder of the worthy cause (albeit different than that planned) it played in averting a national disaster. As it’s made of plastic, it would be enviromentally friendly too (assuming it’s recycled plastic of course and not that new stuff the Treaty mentioned) A fitting memorial (out of sight too) and an international diving experience not to be missed that may recoup some of the cost of the cleanup. Now how sensible is that then huh? Presto

It has been over a year since Blenheim woman Caroline McCarthy started her own law practice, a move she says has been one of the best decisions she has made in her career. “I have been in law for more than 20 years so it felt like the right time to venture out on my own, and I have really enjoyed the challenges it has presented” she says. The practice named McCarthy Law Limited focuses on family law (including relationship property), employment law, conveyancing, trust law and estate planning. However with changes being made to both the legal aid criteria and family court systems, McCarthy Law is also focusing on emphasising resolution between the parties prior to entering the court system. “From these changes there will be less access to justice for people who don’t have the means to pay. “To counteract this we will be looking at doing more mediation which sees me continue to work as a mediator with the

Community Mediation Marlborough service, as well as assisting clients and parties to look at mediation as a viable alternative to litigation ” she says. McCarthy Law has the expertise to adapt to the ever changing challenges of both the current economic climate and those imposed by the Ministry of Justice. “From a business perspective the drop off in conveyancing and the market downturn means the business has had to adapt to changes thrust upon us as lawyers. “McCarthy Law is well placed to meet these challenges and we have the ability to react to demand in other areas such as family law, and estate planning in addition to other traditional areas of the law which affects our community,” she says. Previous to starting her own practice, Caroline worked in a number of firms in Blenheim, Wellington and Rarotonga and was recently joined by solicitor and local woman Karyn van Wijngaarden.

Art by the slice Home baker extraordinaire Rachel Pilcher’s cakes would not look out of place in any high-end bakery, but she is happy confining her skills to her own kitchen, as Damian George finds out. Home baker Rachel Pilcher insists she doesn’t want to put her cakes up for sale because they are not ‘professionally’ done. But if she didn’t tell anyone, she could probably easily get away with it. Rachel, who baked her first cake five years ago for her daughter’s first birthday (a “basic 2D Winnie the Pooh cake), has since let her imagination and creativity run wild. She has created everything from wedding cakes to 3D castles, television characters, animals and an AC/DC cake featuring the band’s guitarist Angus Young. There is no training; just enthusiasm and persistence. “A lot of things you just work out, and I just like to play,” Rachel says. “Obviously, some cakes take a lot longer than others, and it can often be the basic ones that take more time.” Working with a tried-and-tested family chocolate cake recipe (“I’ve never found a good recipe for any other cake”), Rachel builds the foundations of her showpieces before decorating them with icing and fondant. Between each layer of cake is a layer of butter cream, coloured according to the project. Rachel says the hardest part of the delicate process is applying the fondant, because of its dense, play dough-like texture. Another crucial aspect, she says, is the consistency of the cake. ‘You have to let the cake set and firm up for a while after baking it – usually overnight in the fridge - otherwise it’s too fresh and it’ll sink.” Rachel has taken on many challenges during her cake-making days, but none, she says, as hard as her ‘Cat in the Hat’ project for her daughter’s third birthday two years ago. “It was my first attempt at a shaped cake, and I picked a 3D circular one,” she says. “That was probably the one that really, really got me going.” Among her other more adventurous cakes are a 40-centimetre ‘Elmo’, a horse and cart (the cart was made with royal icing and shaped on a water balloon which she later popped), and an all-night soccer ball project with each piece of ‘stitching’ cut out and stuck on individually.

Rachel Pilcher with some of her fantastic edible creations.

Her strangest request, from her friend’s husband, was the Young figure, which was sculpted out of icing and entirely edible apart from some wire to hold it in shape. Her knack for baking may be a family thing – her grandfather had bakeries in Christchurch and Murchison and her great-grandfather had a bakery in Blenheim. “I’ve’ googled’ a few techniques, but it’s just practise and learning. “If it doesn’t work, I start again.”

Ashwood Park RETIREMENT VILL AGE

Without trial has come error, though. “I’ve had a couple of disasters. “One occurred at a person’s house when I was delivering the cake to them - I’d baked an Elmo and his head fell off two metres from the door. “Luckily, I had enough icing and spare cake that I hadn’t used and was able to do a bit of a repair job.” Rachel says she has no desire to make a living out of her baking, but would like to

further develop her skills by working parttime in a bakery. For now, though, she plans to continue honing her skills in her own kitchen, and spoiling her friends and family. “I’m pleased I either give [the cakes] away or people order them, ‘cause it’s almost hard to watch them be cut considering the time that’s gone into them.” Rachel’s cakes can be viewed on Facebook, under the title ‘Simpil Delights’.

milking machines, effluent pumps, farm water systems, valves and pipe lines, filters as well as arc welding and stainless steel tig welding. “Another area the business is heading towards is the servicing of bach water systems and water pressure systems throughout the Marlborough Sounds,” he says. Glen has had a large involvement in the installation of irrigation systems in Marlborough, and because Glen is completely mobile he can access isolated areas on properties. “I have a four wheel drive vehicle equipped with a generator and welder capable of reaching all areas of a property. This in addition with my own boat means there aren’t many places in Marlborough and the Sounds area that I can’t access,” he says. For more information about Marfell Engineering Field Services you can contact Glen on 021 490 535 or mefs@xtra.co.nz

Second consecutive food price fall ‘shows the market works’ A word from Federated Farmers President and the Federation’s economics and commerce spokesperson, Bruce Wills:

The second consecutive fall in the Food Price Index, this time by one percent, shows that the market is working to deliver fair pricing, says Bruce in a press release issued last week. “It would be nice to see those who jumped on the food price bandwagon, say some positive things about the market. If you look at the food staples, like vegetables, bread and some meat, there’s actually been a fall and that needs to be acknowledged.

“While vegetables usually fall at this time of the year, I need to point out some big falls in beef and lamb because they’ve been subject to some comment. “Looking at the year to September, food prices are up 4.7 percent and are pretty much inline with inflation. We mustn’t forget that half of the increase is due to last October’s GST increase. “As food prices are one of these flash point areas, it would be nice to think this second consecutive fall in the Food Prices Index may get some positive comment,” he concluded.

your security 2011 Disaster preparation When we least expect it, a natural disaster could easily strike -anytime, anywhere. Daily life will be extremely disrupted and many of the comforts we take for granted will be in short supply or non-existent. By thinking ahead and preparing your own Natural Disaster Kit, you can dramatically improve your chances of getting through a disaster. Having the essentials on hand when disaster strikes could mean the difference between life and death for you and your family.

Be PrePared

Surviving an emergency is all about preparation. By having an emergency kit at home or at work, you’ll be in a much better position to handle whatever nature throws at you and your family. If a disaster happened now, would you be ready? Visit www.civildefence.govt.nz for more information.

Secure your safety People should feel safe and secure in their home and although statistically the likelihood of an encounter with an intruder is low, it is important to know how you can minimise risk and increase your security.

Here are some handy tips to follow: • Don’t leave door keys under mats, flowerpots or in letterboxes, burglars can find them. • Items left lying around such as ladders, tools, bicycles etc can be used to gain entry through a window. • Open garage doors and windows are attractive to criminals, install security fittings. • If you are home, don’t leave exterior doors open or unlocked, prowlers may use them to gain access.

Security & Fly Protection

• Carry your keys in your hand for a quick entry if necessary. • If you arrive home and you think there has been a burglary, do not enter as the intruder may still be inside. Go to a neighbour and phone the Police.

Spring clean for a good cause Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk As the people of Picton and the Marlborough Sounds begin their annual spring cleanout of spare rooms, garages and wardrobes, Hospice Marlborough has created an easy way to give away their good quality unwanted goods and possessions. The ‘Spring Cleanout for Hospice’ provides the people of Picton and the Sounds area a great opportunity to have a clean out and donate unwanted goods to Blenheim’s Hospice Shop. Rugby followers have been wrong before - especially when calculations have involved the French - but it really is hard to see how Les Bleus will get close to the All Blacks in Sunday night’s Rugby World Cup final. Courtesy of an Irish victory over Australia in the pool stages of the tournament (which really did mess things up), and the controversial red-carding of Welsh skipper Sam Warburton in last weekend’s semifinal, France have advanced to the final despite being one of the least inspiring teams of the tournament. The Irish win paved a path to the final for a Northern Hem isphere tea m, wh ile Warburton’s sending-off in his side’s semifinal against France dented any real chance

Damian George

of the Welsh qualifying for the showpiece game. There always remains the possibility of the French turning up in familiar jerseys but different bodies from those which have bumbled their way through the tournament so far. Semi-final and quarter-final wins over the All Blacks in the 1999 and 2007 World Cups respectively are testament to that. But we are talking something truly miraculous from the French this time round if they are to upset the All Blacks. Let’s look at the facts: underwhelming wins over Canada and Japan, a loss to Tonga, a hiding from New Zealand, a vistory over an English team which most school First XVs would give

a good run, and a nervous, gun-shy win against a 14-man Welsh team. One could argue the French have shown they know how to win (most of the time), which makes them a threat. One could also argue they have not yet played their “big” game they usually produce at the World Cup, given how bad England were in their quarterfinal match-up. But, since day one of this tournament, the All Blacks have looked on a mission. They will not be taking the French lightly, which, to me, only gives France even less of a chance. For the French to win this game would probably go down as the biggest upset ever seen at a World Cup. [from left]: Brian and Ross Hutchison and Bill Chandler enjoyed a successful outing at the South Island Masters Games in Nelson on Saturday.

Training Blog Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk is competing in the 10.1km run at the New World Marlborough Marathon in December, and is writing a weekly blog on her training and weight-loss progress.

This past week has been a difficult one for me as I was plagued by a cold which caused me to miss my training session with Kustom Fitness. Despite the rain keeping me indoors and my cold grounding me at home some nights when I would normally get out for a jog, I did manage two 3.7km approx jogs and a half hour power walk. It has been great to see how far I can push myself in the lead up to the marathon, and remember people that I started from scratch three weeks ago! I have to admit that it was slightly disheartening not getting out as much this week, but this only presents the challenge to make up for lost time and to tighten up my eating plan. My new found friend ‘oats’ has been an

85

$

incredible source of energy and early on I incorporated it into my daily eating plan. Eating it for breakfast, morning tea and afternoon tea has really boosted my energy levels and replaces the muesli bars and rice crackers with hummus which I used to snack on. Celeste Lodewyk For the next week my plan is to increase my jogging distance as well as dropping at least one kilo of weight. See you next week. PS: There is a donation box set up in The Sun office, 72 High St, Blenheim, for sponsorship for myself and colleagues Damian and Maree [also doing the 10.1km run] which are being donated to the Marlborough Life Education Trust.

Father-and-son duo Brian and Ross Hutchison, rowing in the 75-79 and 50-54 age-groups respectively, returned home with seven medals between them, with Brian claiming two golds. Fellow Blenheim Rowing Club member Bill Chandler, racing in the 75-79 age-group, completed a successful outing for the trio, picking up two bronze. Bill, who turns 80 early next year with Brian, says he was more than satisfied with his performance given he suffers from a heart condition. “I did better than I thought I would,” he says. “Because of my heart problem,I

can push myself so far and then I’m cruising.” Brian and Bill raced competitively for the Blenheim Rowing Club in the 1950s, and only returned to the sport in the early 2000s. “When you’re getting older, you must keep doing something,” Bill says of his motivation for taking up the sport again. Ross only returned to the sport last year after racing in Blenheim from 1980-1982. He says the trio were rapt to do as well as they did. “We all left everything on the erg [ergometer], there was nothing more we could do.” All three race on the water as well, in singles, doubles, quads and eights. They now turn their attention to an inter-club regatta on December 3 and the Marlborough Rowing Championships on December 17.

Gearing up for November fair Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Knickers and BBQ tools, they may appear unusual pictured together but in fact they are just two of the many items that will be on offer at the November Craft Fair. Now into its sixth year, the Craft Fair will again be held in Market Place, Blenheim on November 4 and 5 offering locals the opportunity to shop for gifts in the lead up to Christmas. There will be around 20 stalls over the two days with everything from plants, garden ornaments, ladies knickers and children’s clothing, through to dolls and children’s toys, fabric crafts, books, BBQ tools, handmade cosmetics, bags, spices and specialty sweets. If you would like to run a stall it is not too late to get in contact with Beavertown Blenheim Lions who are co-ordinating the Fair. As always, proceeds from site fees will be channelled into local charities. To be part of this exciting Craft Fair, phone Rosemary on 577 8412 or Florence on 578 8553. Kindly sponsored by MORE FM Marlborough.
