By Damian George Blenheim man Gilbert Apperley always knew he would one day meet his family, but it did not stop his disbelief when that day finally came. The Aberleigh Rest Home resident, given up for adoption following his birth in 1936, was treated to a shock visit from his cousin Sue two weeks ago - the first contact the 75-year-old has ever had with a blood relative. “I just stood there, I didn’t know what to say,” Gilbert says of the meeting. “There was always something I sort of clung to - I knew there was someone [out there] but I could

never put my hands on anything.” The brain behind the discovery was Gilbert’s daughter Denise, who used social networking site Facebook and website ancestry.com to track down her dad’s family. After finding Sue, who lives in Paekakariki, she was able to uncover eight living cousins of Gilbert, as well as pinpoint his mother, grandparents and great grandparents. Sue presented Gilbert with a photo album of the family members when she visited. “I think it’s fantastic,” Denise says. “Recently, Dad’s been saying to me ‘I wish I

He met his wife Harleen in Kaikoura in the mid-1960s and moved to Blenheim about the same time. He says he never thought much about meeting his family when he was growing up, but had become curious more recently. The family plans to have a reunion in October next year at Sue’s home.

Councillors to decide on Ale House Can the Speight’s Ale House go ahead? When The Sun put this question to Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman this week, he said it would be up to councillors to make that decision at the next council meeting on October 27. “The councillors will have to weigh up the loss of some green space against having a Speight’s Ale House also on this site,” he says. Mr Sowman says he would like to see the Ale House on the proposed site, at 2 High St. “More than 300 square metres of green space will be available with a Speights Ale House,” he says. The council called for interest on the 1264-square-metre riverside site near the Raupo restaurant earlier this year. Only Lion Breweries came forward. The Marlborough District Council bought the site in 2009 for $1.12 million with the intention of following through with its Blenheim Town Centre: A vision for the Future urbanisation plan. In the concept plan, it states: “The site on the riverbank has potential to become a place to hang out and enjoy Blenheim’s riverside setting. “The initative: Create a new public riverside park. “The gradient of the slope of the

$ riverbank should be flattened and terraces should be created to allow for easy access. “Development of a building with active uses overlooking this space should be encouraged.” The major problem with this report is that the riverbank can not be flattened because of major underground services and because

the original artist’s impression drawings were not to scale. So, now the councillors, through no fault of their own, have to weigh up the pros and cons. Do we need a Speight’s Ale House? Do we need a return on our $1.12m already spent? Or, do we need another smaller Seymour Square down on the river bank?

Historic Skyhawk welcomed at Omaka By Damian George New Zealand Aviation Museum Trust chairman Brian Greenall says the addition of an historic A4 Skyhawk will add to the museum’s rich story-telling capabilities. The McDonnell Douglas A4K Skyhawk NZ6216 was officially welcomed at a ceremony at the centre on Friday. Mr Greenall, speaking in the absence of Minister of Defence Wayne Mapp, told about 30 dignitaries at the event the aircraft will be an invaluable tool for the organisation. “The purpose of a museum is to tell stories of the past so that we can educate, and entertain, and enlighten both generations now and in the future,” he said. “I think we tell stories as well as, if not better than, any other museum in the world. “This plane here, 16, is going to help us tell so many more stories about aviation in New Zealand.” The Skyhawk fleet has been ma inta ined in storage by SAFEAIR under the auspices of the Air Combat Force [ACF] Disposal Unit at Ohekea since 2001. The aircraft embarked on its first flight at the Douglas Factory in Long Beach, California, back in July, 1967.

It was then delivered to the US Navy and commenced operational service in Vietnam off aircraft carrier USS Ranger, then USS Hancock, in 1969. In 1970, it was converted to an A4G model before being sold to the Royal Australian Navy the following year. It made its way to RNZAF Base Ohakea and was converted to its current A4K model in 1984. Its final flight into RNZAF Base Woodbourne was in December, 2001. “It’s wonderful for us, and for Marlborough, that we can retain a Skyhawk at one of the homes of Skyhawks,” Mr Greenall said.

“We’re happy to embrace it, we’ll treat it with loving care, and we’ll use it to tell stories for the future.” The Skyhawk was removed from storage last month. It had its latex protective coating stripped off and had its engine, some avionic components, weapons and munitions capability and ballast weights removed before being transported to Omaka. Omaka Heritage Centre staff will continue to clean the aircraft and commence a maintenance programme set out by the RNZAF. It will eventually be displayed in the museum’s main complex.

Review into water monitoring

British Dylanologist Adam Bradford has released a ground-breaking book on iconic artist Bob Dylan. He is speaking in Blenheim tomorrow. By Damian George In a 1981 interview with American author Bill Flanagan, Bob Dylan said you can find out everything about him if you know where to look. British Dylanologist Adam Bradford took up that challenge. The London-based first century historian, who will hold a discussion on the legendary songwriter in Blenheim tomorrow, released a book six weeks ago detailing every one of Dylan’s lyrical sources from the last 30 years. It is entitled Out of the Dark Woods – Dylan, Depression and Faith: The Messages Behind the Music of Bob Dylan. “I’ve always known that he’s taken lyrics from different places, but I always felt there was a lot of material in his lyrics that hadn’t really been exposed – sources of lyrical inspiration that he has,” Bradford says of his own motivation for the book. “So I wanted to write a book that detailed every single textural source of Dylan from Infidels [1983] up to the present day.” His research has discovered what he says is never before published information about the artist during that period. “The thing that struck me the most in doing this research was two things about the album Time out Of Mind [1997],” he says. “The first is that it’s about his divorce, which wasn’t known at the time. “The second thing - and I really wasn’t

exp e ct i ng to see this - was evidence of illness – mental illness – in the lyrics. “ He’s ju st been divorced and he has gone into a depressive state, and that explains why he wasn’t able to write any original material between 1990 nursery rhymes [on the album Under The Red Sky] and 1997.” Bradford, a qualified doctor with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery, says he would not have been able to identify this evidence without his medical background. “There are a number of signs of clinical depression on Time Out of Mind.” To those who say some of Dylan’s lyrics are over-analysed muffle, Bradford offers this explanation: “It is, but when he’s writing a poem, he’s writing it in stanzas. “It’s not all meaningful. At least 50 per cent of it is there to rhyme with the other 50 per cent. He says Dylan’s two main sources of lyrical inspiration throughout his career have been two books in the bible – The Book of Revelation and The Song of Songs.

They also come from as far a field as Humphrey Bogart films, Civil War poets, Roman poets, and texts such as Huckleberry Finn, he says. He says there is a huge amount of groundbreaking information in the book. “Absolutely - all the stuff about the divorce from Carolyn Dennis, why the nursery rhymes were on Under The Red Sky, the depression stuff, and all of the lyrical inspiration from the Book of Revelations hasn’t been recognised before because we don’t look at Dylan’s lyrics from the perspective of biblical history.”

The Marlborough District Council is to conduct a review of its water quality management following a national report issued by the Auditor General’s Office. The report, which examined water quality in four regional council areas not including Marlborough, found water quality is sufficient by international standards but is also deteriorating. It calls for more standadrised methods of reporting water quality, and recommends regional councils develop better processes for responding to those results. Council environment committee chairman Peter Jerram says he is confident the council’s monitoring programme exceeds the requirements of the report, but it will revisit its policy anyway. “Freshwater is a highly valued commodity within Marlborough and we have an advanced monitoring regime in place,” he says. “Our monitoring does not suggest our water quality is deteriorating. “In fact, our last results indicate that water quality in most locations remains generally unchanged while in some cases, like the Rai and Pelorus, we have actually seen some improvement.”

By Damian George Blenheim 10-year-old Grace Hawtin is mad on sailing, so it is not surprising she is beaming at the prospect of pursuing her hobby in one of the sport’s most popular cities. Grace, with her parents David and Lianne, sister Charlotte [7] and brother Flynn [5], will leave Blenheim to set up life in Sydney at the end of the year. It is a move prompted in no small part by Grace’s exploits on the water to date, and David and Lianne’s desire to provide the young talent with a suitable location to further her development. Schooling opportunities for the three children was another factor, David says. “There are opportunities here [in Blenheim], but sailing in Sydney was just great,” David says of the family’s previous visits across the Tasman. “There are so many clubs, so much choice - you can sail in different events and against different people every weekend, whereas here there are just six or seven kids sailing.” The Witherlea School pupil spent three months sailing near the New South Wales capital recently, from November last year to January this year. That stint included an impressive showing in the International Optimist Australian Championships at Pittwater, north of Sydney, where she finished as the top 10-year-old. She also trained out of the Woollahra Sailing Club in Rose Bay.

Consents processed up - survey Marlborough was one of the top five busiest areas in New Zealand in handling resource consents in the 2010-11 year, a survey shows. The biennial survey of local authorities, issued by the Ministry for the Environment, measures councils’ performance working with the Resource Management Act. Marlborough District Council handled 1100 consent applications in the 12-month period to June 2011, just behind the Northland Regional Council and the Christchurch City Council and ahead of Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the Tasman District Council. Marlborough also lifted its performance rate in the survey period by processing 95 per cent of all applications on time, up from just 53 per cent achieved 2007-08. The highest number of processed aplications [1934] was achieved in 2007-08. “I realise that was a period of boom which did put council staff under heavy pressure and that things are now much quieter but it’s still very satisfying to see the level of

service raised so significantly,” council hearing committee chairman David Dew says. A council spokesperson says the improvement is partly because of a change of approach from the council regulatory section which now requires more information when lodging an application. That was prompted by 2009 measures to streamline the Resource Management Act. Cr Dew says applicants can speed up the process even further by seeking more advice before an application is lodged. An extended timeframe was necessary for just 6 per cent of the applications submitted in Marlborough during the year. Council regulatory manager Hans Versteegh says Marlborough is consistently in the top five regions across New Zealand, processing as many applications as the Auckland and Wellington regions combined. That is because the area is a high resourece user, which deals with a lot of water and coastal permits, he says.

Dear Ed, I read with astonishment and disappointment the recent arrest of Michael Mooney, a respected tennis coach throughout New Zealand. Let me say tennis coaches are open to personal agendas, and there are no doubt many underlying issues that we do not know about. As a tennis coach and director of the South Canterbury Tennis Academy in New Zealand, it shows how extreme local administrators with maybe a chip on the shoulder are willing to go to damage the sport and reputations.

There is no system for tennis coaches to receive proper and fair mediation that would stop an issue to explode with this magnitude. A father, and respected tennis coach, has been arrested. Is this for the “good of the game”? I hardly think so! There are lessons to be learned from these recent events. A good coach and someone who has done much good for the game should not be in this situation. Common sense and personal agendas, be it on either party, need to be put aside.! High flying dreams

“Believe in your dreams and they may come true. Believe in yourself and they WILL come true.” Celeste Lodewyk meets local man Travers Tennant who shares his journey in becoming an aircraft pilot and his recent achievement of flying a Piper Seneca IV (pictured) from America to Marlborough. Roaring above the mountain tops with the control of an aircraft resting within your hands is a scenario that many people have only dreamt of, but according to Marlborough Aero Club Chief Flight Instructor Travers Tennant, this can be a reality for anyone. Travers is a great example of someone having the determination to transform his dreams into physical reality, something he hopes will inspire others who also hope to gain their pilot’s license. His story begins as a small child living in his native home of Zimbabwe. His parents owned a game farm and once a year they would organise a helicopter to help capture the game. The helicopter would land on their front lawn which would delight Travers as he watched it come and go. “I remember getting very upset when it left without me,” he laughs. Travers’ father also flew him and his sister

Although Travers says he would jump at another overseas opportunity, he is content with his role at Marlborough Aero Club and looks forward to taking others like himself for their first flight. “I still remember the thrill of my first solo flight, it’s an unforgettable experience which leaves a smile on your face for weeks. “If I can pass my passion on to others and help them to achieve their own dreams of flying, then it makes my job even more worthwhile,” he smiles.

Becoming a ‘woman in business’ has been a life long goal of Ang Nicholls, one that she realised recently after opening her Renwick based hair salon, Cabello Hair & Beauty. Ang, who was raised in Marlborough has been in the hairdressing industry for eight years which included a management role in a Christchurch salon. After returning to Blenheim she decided to expand on her knowledge and passion for colours by doing a painting apprenticeship. “Working with colour and creating change is something I really enjoy.

Festival set to wheel off It is that time of year again when Renwick hosts one of its most anticipated festivals – the Renwick School (and friends) Festival of Wheels on Sunday, October 30. This year’s event will again be hosted at the Geisen Sports and Events Centre and recreation grounds where there will be non-stop action throughout the day. And of course adding to the excitement, Renwick School will also be celebrating a momentous occasion – the school’s 150th Jubilee. The Jubilee will commence on October 28 with celebrations running through to October 30 to coincide with the Festival of Wheels. The Festival is the school’s annual fundraiser and although previous years have been hugely successful, there are more displays, competitions and entertainment for the whole family. -2tbls of whole grain mustard -½ cup of your favorite mayonnaise -Salt & freshly cracked black pepper

Finely slice the spring onions. Thinly slice the bacon and pan fry it over a low heat, once cooked drain on paper towels. Combine the mustard and mayonnaise and salt and pepper to taste. In a large salad bowel put the potato, spring onion and bacon, season with a little salt and pepper. Pour the mayonnaise mixture on top and combine. This works best if the potatoes are cold so they don’t fall apart. Leave covered in the fridge for at least one hour to let the flavours meld.

Weepu needs to get 10 jersey All Blacks coaches have been heavily criticised in the past for selecting players “out of position” in World Cups, but, dare I say it, Wellington playmaker Piri Weepu needs to play at No 10 for New Zealand in the remainder of this year’s tournament. The worst nightmare for All Blacks fans eventuated on Saturday when the one thing which could seriously derail the All Blacks’ tilt at a first World Cup in 24 years happened – an injury to Daniel Carter. It is a potentially catastrophic blow not only because Carter is clearly the best first five-eighth in the world, but also because of the obvious daylight between him and back-up Colin Slade. Slade is a good rugby player, a

very good one at that. But he is also seriously underdone, lacking in confidence and not up to the task, at this stage, of running an All Blacks backline in the knockout stages of a World Cup. The Canterbury No 10 was picked ahead of Manawatu’s Aaron Cruden in the initial 30-man squad this year despite playing just three games for the Highlanders in the Super 15 due to two broken jaws. North Island champ targets nationals >judo By Damian George Champion Blenheim judo fighter Sophie Warburton has set herself some lofty goals, and her quest towards them continues on Sunday as she builds for this month’s national championships in Auckland. The 13-year-old green belt recently claimed the North Island Judo title in her category and won gold in the senior girls’ age-group at the preceding South Island Championships. She currently trains four times a week – twice in Blenheim, once in Havelock and once in Kaikoura – and is determined to push herself as far as she can go. “My ultimate goal is to get into the Oceania team in maybe two years, and get my black belt by the time I’m 16,” she says. Club looks to continue success >athle tics By Damian George The Marlborough Children’s Athletics Club is looking to build on a successful 2010-11 season as this year’s competition gets underway with a muster today. Marlborough’s young athletes produced some encouraging performances for the club last season, most notably the breaking of a 30-year-old 400m record by nineyear-old Torban Otway. President Stephanie Southey says she and the club’s committee, in its first year in charge last season, are confident of further success in 2011-12. “I think we’re in a good place,” she says.

“We certainly built on numbers last year from what we had the previous year and all indications are there will be a bit more growth this year as well.” This year will feature some changes to the competition’s format. A new ‘Run, Jump, Throw’ circuit programme for five and six-year-olds will be introduced to eliminate wait time between events in that age-group. For the first time, 15-year-olds will be included in the weekly competition, at the request of Athletics NZ, somehting which Mrs Southey is excited about. “We tend to lose athletes at that age because they’re not quite old enough to compete in the senior

grade and they drop off,” she says. “Athletics NZ wants us to include them and also to have them racing with 13 and 14-year-olds to create ‘meaningful competition’.” She says the committee has been working hard to attract young athletes as the season approaches. Weekly competition commences on October 26, and is held every Wednesday at Athletic Park. The club breaks for Christmas on December 21 and returns on February 1. Blenheim club aiming high >taek wondo

By Damian George The Blenheim Olympic Taekwondo Club wants to back up its success in the recent South Island Championships with another strong showing in Saturday’s Top of The South tournament. The club claimed nine medals, including four golds, at the South Island event in Christchurch in June, a promising sign ahead of its next assignment this weekend. Although labelled a Top of the South tournament, the competition at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 will involve contestants from Christchurch,

Timaru and Dunedin, and possibly from the lower North Island. “We’re hoping to do quite well, we’ve got some pretty good little fighters,” club president Tim Western says. ‘It’s the same group of kids who went to the South Island tournament, so we’re aiming to go well again.” The Blenheim club will account for 10 of the more than 150 competitors at the event. Among the Blenheim club’s hopefuls will be Tim’s 11-year-old son Jack Western, who recently won a gold medal at the national championships in Wellington. The tournament will feature fighters from age seven and up.

Marathon effort Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk takes on fitness challenge For those who know me, training for the New World Marlborough Marathon is as far out of my comfort zone as is writing about my own personal weight loss goal. But in the hope of inspiring others I will be writing a weekly blog sharing my ups and downs as I prepare for the 10.1km run/walk on December 3. Myself, along with my colleagues Maree Barton and Damian George, will be participating in the Life Education Trust’s ‘Team Harold’ to help raise money so the Trust can continue offering local schools their educational services. How this all began for me: After the birth of my daughter twoand-a-half years ago I succumbed to my love of sweets and dislike of exercise. Work, parenting and general home life had taken over ‘me time’, but this year I set myself an ambitious, yet achievable challenge to lose 30kgs. I began the first leg of my journey visiting Weight Watchers where I lost 6kg in six weeks, then continued

on under the watch f ul a nd strict supervision Celeste Lodewyk of Kustom Fitness personal trainer Brayden Graham. Brayden is not only helping me with my weight loss, but is also preparing me for December‘s marathon. To date it has been 12 weeks since I began my weight loss and I have managed to shed 10kg. This is only the beginning though. I plan to continue with my weekly sessions with Kustom Fitness, regular walks/jogs up the Wither Hills and healthy eating - all the while balancing work and a busy family life.
