Attempts to form a new Marlborough Tennis Club, The Wanderers, have struck a major roadblock. The club is seeking affiliation with the Marlborough Tennis Association so that players can take part in the association’s competitions, and also compete at regional and national level. Tickets for the 2011 Marlborough Wine Festival go on sale today and organisers are expecting another sell out. The festival is the largest and longest running event of its kind in New Zealand, attracting wine aficionados for more than 27 years. With a limit on the number of wineries able to take part, there has been a rush by the Marlborough industry to be involved, which has been matched by the enthusiasm of food outlets. More than 30 individual food stands will be available to the public on the day, with a number providing specialist gourmet cuisine. mixture of soul, jazz and British and American R‘n’B. Sola Rosa a five piece band from Auckland is sure to attract a crowd on their own. Their latest album “Get it Together� was released in New Zealand a few months back and is about to be released in Australia this week. The Checks are well known for their blues driven and high energy rock ‘n’ roll, and from supporting such bands as The Killers and REM in recent years. The Wine Marlborough Festival is being held at Brancott Vineyard on Saturday February 12. With only 8000 tickets available, people are urged to get in quickly, to avoid disappointment.

Voters numbers up on last election Final days for voting - votes must be in on Friday... On Monday October 4, 12,359 electors, or 38.15 per cent of a possible 32,395, had voted in the Marlborough District Council election which closes at noon on Saturday October 9. Interest generated by this election appears to be greater than in 2007, when only 50.92 per cent of voters

voted at all, just 12 per cent more than Monday’s total. In 2004, 62.43 per cent of eligible electors voted. Electors are reminded to post their forms in the free post envelope provided by today, Wednesday, or else take them to any of the council’s offices by

Friday. In the Blenheim Ward, where eighteen candidates are contesting seven seats, 6968 votes were cast by Monday, 37.96 per cent of the possible total. Wairau-Awatere had 2953 returns, with 38.30 per cent of votes in. Five candidates are

contesting three places there. In the new Marlborough Sounds Ward, 2438 voters, 38.52 per cent, had voted by Tuesday. There are no comparisons with 2007 as the ward is a composite of the old Picton and Pelorus Northern Sounds wards. In Picton in 2007, the two sitting

Retirement beckons Mike McConnell departs with fond memories By Celeste Lodewyk “Selling vehicles has been bloody good fun. I have been very lucky to have had a great working life here in Blenheim,� says retiring car dealer Mike McConnell. Mike will be hanging up his sales cap this December after 32-years of selling vehicles, and 40-years of being in business. “I’m 68-years old now so I feel it’s a good time to sit back and let a younger person with fresh enthusiasm come into the Blenheim car dealer family – well I think that’s a good enough excuse anyway,� he laughs. Initially Mike was in partnership with a building business but in 1978 decided to pursue other areas. He found himself working for Terry Motors as a salesman, which was located on Scott Street where Wadsco Motor World now stands. After two years there, Terry Motors opened a second (commercial) branch on Main Street where Mike operated it alone for three years mainly selling four-wheel drive vehicles. After being bitten by the business bug, Mike gained his own license and went out on his own in 1984 with Mike McConnell Motors, building his own yard at 40 Main Street. There he operated until coming to his current premise on Nelson Street. Looking back Mike recalls the ups and downs whilst contemplating his future retirement.

Dear Ed... Why is the Marlborough Express increasing its news-stand purchase price from $1.10 to $1.20 (an increase well above the 2.5% GST rise) ? At tops, the paper should be $1.15 rounded up to the nearest 5c. The government said (TV News) that it would investigate traders that used the excuse of the GST rise (refer Express web site today) to increase prices above the GST increase. A blatant breach. I don’t subscribe to the Express as I find it generally a waste of paper (so to speak) except for the cryptic crossword in the free Saturday Express. I assume all NZ owned Fairfax papers will be doing likewise.

way and meeting different people.� Mike will continue to sell his remaining vehicles until December before any remainders are taken to the Motor Centre to be sold. And retirement? Mike says he does not have set plans yet, though he hopes to do some volunteer work along with his wife, spend time at the family bach and enjoy quality family time.

New store, same faces

After much hype and anticipation, Countdown Springlands has undergone its transformation and re-opened its doors 10am last Wednesday. A crowd of customers eagerly waiting by the locked doors were greeted by the same friendly, familiar staff. Shirleen Badman who went along with her two daughters praised the changes and said she looked forward to exploring the store. “The store looks good so far and it’s great to see the same friendly staff,� she said. During the three days that the store was closed, the price ticketing had been changed to reflect the lower Countdown pricing across a range of lines.

Pricing also accommodated the increase in GST. The store has re-opened with the same range though all product lines will be assessed over the coming months to gauge selling patterns, product popularity and customer demand, said Penny Newbigin, media relations manager for Progressive Enterprises Limited. “Shoppers at Countdown Springlands can still expect the same friendly staff, same great range and lower prices,� she said. “The store will be re-racked on Monday, November 8 to reflect the Countdown display model, and this is when customers will really begin to notice a difference,� she said.

Fair play questioned continued from page 1 Yet in an email to club spokesperson Michael Mooney, Wanderers has been asked to provide a letter from all other MTA clubs agreeing to their setting up a new club in Blenheim. A search of the incorporated society’s database shows no sign that the Picton or Grovetown clubs have ever sought incorporated status. The question then raised, said Gordon Strang of the Law Centre, was one of fairness. “Maybe they can still be members without incorporating. Did the other clubs in the association go through this same process?� he asked. The requirement to provide a financial plan for the next three years also seemed unusual in a situation where people gave their time to clubs voluntarily. MTA president Craig Morris has also, in an email to Michael Mooney, asked that the full names and contact details of the 15 members who are proposing the new tennis club be provided to them. “The MTA would also reserve the right to interview these 15 people,� his e mail says. Massive ASB charity effort On Wednesday October 20, three members of ASB Blenheim’s Commercial team will undertake a twentyfour-hour long feat of endurance, with a sponsored 115k walk from Nelson to Blenheim. The aim is to raise funds for the banks’s community partner St John, who are working towards buying a fully-equipped Event Vehicle. Half of this walk will be truly challenging, overland and in the pitch dark. At 6.30pm on October 20, Graeme Andrews will leave from ASB in Nelson, with some of the hardier members of ASB Nelson. They will spend the night on a 45k tramp up the Matai Valley and through the Maungatapu Saddle, meeting colleagues from both branches at the Pelorus Bridge on 6.30am the next morning. Graeme’s Blenheim colleagues, Caryn Ryan and Robyn Breen, will then take part in what is expected to be a 12-hour-long relay walk on the road, complete with lead and support vehicles. The relay is planned to cover 10km each leg, with three people walking at any one time. They hope to arrive at ASB in Blenheim at approximately 6.30pm. Graeme has no idea what sort of reception awaits them on their arrival, but hopes that for big crowds happy to make a donation for the cause. Donations are tax-deductible, he says. )RU Whacky wedding By Celeste Lodewyk It took more than a rogue spider and the noise of a neighbor’s chainsaw to distract from the exchanging of vows between a bright orange tiger and a medieval princess in Blenheim on Saturday. Originally from Blenheim, Ian O’Malley and his blushing bride Karen Boyce flew from their Cairns home in Australia to be married in the presence of friends and family. But abstaining from tradition, the quirky and fun loving couple decided to marry in style - that is dressed as fictional characters. Groom Ian dressed as his nickname ‘Tigger’ suggests, in a bright orange suit with black fluffy tiger stripes and matching hairdo while Karen dressed as a medieval princess. The decision to have a themed wedding rose after serious illness nearly claimed Karen’s life 18 months ago. Ian and Karen were working in the outback of Australia with at risk youth, helping to run a drug and alcohol addiction and suicide prevention scheme.

Whilst there, Karen became ill with an infection which resulted in Deep Vein Thrombosis. Unbeknown to Karen and the doctors treating her, the infection was also attacking her heart. After open heart surgery and her brush with death Karen feels lucky to be alive and in celebration of this, she wanted to have a ’fun and lighthearted’ wedding. “Because of everything I went through Ian and I just wanted to have fun and have a good time with our friends and family, because at the end of the day you only have one life so it’s important to enjoy every minute,� Karen smiles. Ian and Karen flew back to Australia this week with their wacky wedding attire to have a second wedding with friends. Around 40 guest attended the wedding dressed in a variety of costumes including a run away bride, super woman, the Flintstones, a werewolf, Greek goddesses, royalty and Mexicans.

Trouble exported to Kaikoura? Blenheim’s gain may have been Kaikoura’s loss. Local police report that with the Seafest on there, there was a very quiet weekend here with just seven arrests. That included two for breach of bail and one on a warrant for their arrest. The other four arrests include two made at 9.25pm on Friday, when a 17-year-old female student and a 23year-old male unemployed were arrested for burglary from a commercial premise on Hammerichs Road after being caught stealing scrap metal from the premises. They appeared in the Blenheim District Court on

Monday and were released on bail. On Saturday at 5.53pm a 21-year-old male was arrested and held for detoxification, while at 11.50pm a 19-year-old male painter was arrested for willful damage of a letterbox after a call from the public. He was located a short distance away. Between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, there were four arrests within twenty hours. At 10.40am a 35 -year-old unemployed male was arrested for threatening behaviour after he allegedly threatened another male with a guitar

neck after being evicted from a Mayfield address, while at 6.45pm a 22 -year-old unemployed male was arrested for being unlawfully in a building after he was found in a building at A & P park without a reasonable excuse. At 4.50am on Thursday morning, a 20 -year-old male sickness beneficiary was arrested for wilful damage and male assaults female after a domestic incident at a Weld Street address. At 5am a 17 -year-old unemployed female was arrested on a warrant for her arrest for breaching her community work requirement.

Dear Ed Just prior to Friday’s GST rise, I heard on radio some supermarkets put up fruit and vegetable prices so that with GST the jumped again. I bet they didn’t raise the prices paid to growers. Dear Ed I was amazed to hear councillor Gerald Hope at the fish and game meeting candidates’ meeting saying because Nelson and Tasman councils have big loans, Marlborough should borrow $125 million. If Johnny cuts off his finger, Bill would be silly to do the same. What councillor Hope and the present councillors are doing is making a big debt for future generation rate-payers. Hope Drive is a relatively recent addition to the list of street names in Blenheim However it is not, as might be expected, named after ex-mayor Gerald Hope. It is named for the Hopes of Hope farm and orchard, following council policy that any personal name will be discouraged unless it has an historical connection with the property being subdivided. The streets leading off Hope Drive are named for some of the children of the Hope family: Natalie Place, Teriece Place and Lester. Place. This is also in line with policy guidelines, which suggest that where more than one road is being created in a sub-division, a common theme is recommended for the names. (The council defines a ‘drive’ as a main connecting road in a superb, or a road with scenic attraction. A ‘place’ is a no exit road, with a turning circle at its blind end. It is longer than a close which serves a smaller number of homes than a place.)

Miracle workers Four local midwives talk to Celeste Lodewyk news2@blenheimsun.co.nz By Celeste Lodewyk The miracle of child birth is for many a beautiful and humbling experience. But according to four Marlborough self employed midwives, it is an incredible journey made memorable by the life long friendships forged with families along the way. Seizing a rare moment from their 24 hour seven day working week, Ruth Johnson, Shona Wills, Carole Thompson and Cathy Middleton take time to reflect on their roles and share their reasons for pursuing a career in midwifery. For the group’s newest addition Carole, relocating from Nelson with her family has been a positive and rewarding move. “I was headhunted by Shona to come to Marlborough,� she laughs. “But since coming here in January I have had incredible support and been made to feel welcome, I am very happy to be here.� Now in her fifth year of midwifery, Carol says it has always been something she wanted to do. “The most inspiring moments as a midwife are when you are present at the beginning and the end of a pregnancy, it’s a journey which still brings a tear to my eye when I see a mother hold her newborn baby,� she says. Agreeing with Carole’s comments, Ruth reminisces the first moment she witnessed a birth. “When I was in general nursing I spent three months working in maternity and I can still remember the buzz I got from being involved with a birth. “It gave me such a thrill to be present at such an amazing moment and I knew from that moment that I wanted to be a midwife,� she smiles. Originally from Picton Ruth trained as a midwife in Scotland before returning to New Zealand and later Marlborough .She has been a practising midwife for over 30 years.. Cathy who also trained abroad credits her love for midwifery to a memorable experience when working as a nurse. “I was working in the UK doing hospital based training when I spent time working in the maternity ward following around a midwife named June. “I will never forget her because it was her passion and dedication to midwifery that made me feel like I wanted to pursue it too, and I have never looked back,� Cathy says.. Cathy spent several years moving back and

forth between NZ and the UK before settling in Blenheim in 1991. “I enjoy living in Marlborough and absolutely love my work as a midwife, there is never a day where I don’t want to come to work.� “It’s so rewarding to help bring a baby into the world,� adds Shona. From the moment Shona left school she says midwifery was the only thing she wanted to do. After doing her nurse training she worked in surgical, maternity and paediatrics in Blenheim. Shona qualified as a Midwife in 1999 and then completed a degree in Midwifery in 2001. “This is my passion, it’s what I love and

something I always see myself doing,� she says. Despite the ’ups and downs’ associated to being on call 24 hours a day, Shona says it’s important to have a supportive and understanding husband and family. “Not knowing when the phone is going to ring and the lack of sleep can be demanding on a midwife but when you have a career doing something you love, you find it very gratifying..� “And I still get the odd tear in my eye at a birth, it really is the most wonderful experience,� she says. Midwives of Marlborough provide pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care up to six weeks after the baby is born.

Pregnancy care is free to all women who are residents or have long term visas. They care for women throughout the Marlborough region including women within Blenheim, Picton, Seddon, Havelock and any outlying areas. Whilst they are self employed they have full access to all hospital services, and homebirth is an option. And now, Ruth, Shona, Carole and Cathy will be using the after hours GP offices at Wairau Hospital for clinic appointments. “Our vision is for one day to create a specialist centre for Midwives of Marlborough so women can call in for pregnancy tests, information and advice,� says Shona.

Next year Springlands School will be celebrating a historic milestone. It will be the school’s 125th birthday and to mark the occasion there will be a two-day celebration on November 25 and 26, 2011. Current member Shona Chambers is calling for more people to join the committee and help bring new ideas to the table. “We only have a handful of members so far but we really want more people to get involved so we have more input and to hear what different ages would like to see incorporated into the celebrations,� she says. Still in the planning stages, the committee meets monthly at the school’s staff room. If you are interested in joining the committee or wish to share ideas simply contact the Springlands School office. Alternatively if you have any Springlands School memorabilia that could be included in the celebrations, the committee wants to hear from you. “We want to make this 125th birthday a real success so we need more hands on deck, ideas, photos – anything to celebrate the school’s history,� Shona says.

Saturday October 16 October is an exciting month for Springlands School as they gear up for their 52nd annual School Gala. This year the gala will be held on Saturday, October 16 on the school grounds and will run from 10-am to 2pm. Friends of Springlands School (FOSS) committee member Susan Witehira says this year’s gala aims to be bigger and better than the last with many exciting new activities, stalls and entertainment lined up for the whole family. “The gala will have a bigger emphasis on food this year with the new Springlands Countdown Food Court. There will be everything from lemon stalls, hot food, home baking, sweets, BBQ food, a mussel stand, iceblocks, drinks plus loads more. “What’s more there will be plenty of seating available,� Susan says. The entertainment lineup features some thrilling new acts including a Zumba display, roller-derby, guitar groups, a fashion show, school choir and Kapa Haka displays. At midday the gala’s live auction kicks off with items including a Furneaux Lodge prize pack, helicopter rides, a girl’s bike and travel and entertainment packages to Wellington,

Kaikoura and Christchurch. Plus, a silent auction will run throughout the day with 80 lots for people to bid on such as wine, car care packs, jewelry, sports packs, travel packages and entertainment passes. The infamous ‘Chocolate Wheel’ has been revamped for the gala this year and will have bigger and better prizes than ever for both adults and children. In true fashion, the Springlands School Gala will have different areas featuring a variety of activities for the whole family. On the tennis courts, there will be side show games and a specified area for juniors while on the grass areas will be four bouncy castles, displays from local fire brigades, monster truck rides and several vehicle exhibits. There will face painting, crazy hair, nail decorating, ginger bread men, the white elephant stall plus much much more. Susan says the committee is aiming to raise around $30,000 to go toward maintenance and solar heating of the school’s pool. Entries sought for the local environment The eighth Marlborough Environment Awards are under way and seeking entries. With awareness about sustainability growing, the Awards give entrants the chance to showcase their achievements and efforts to look after the environment. The Awards are run every two years by the Marlborough District Council to encourage sound environmental management which is also good for business. Entrants include Marlborough companies, community groups and individuals who protect and enhance the environment and use resources and energy efficiently.

There are seven Award categories: farming, forestry, winegrowing/horticulture, habitat enhancement, efficiency, landscape and innovation. Each has a prize of $1000 and one winner is selected for the Supreme Award and a further $2000. Last year’s Supreme winners were the Plaisier family for their work in creating the Tui Nature Reserve in the Pelorus Sound. Their lives revolve around tree planting and pest control to turn 42ha of scrub back into native bush and a sanctuary for endangered species. “The media exposure and the

interest expressed by those on the field day was very inspiring to us,� says Ellen Plaisier. “The result is a growing biodiversity project with an annual Open Day and many activities around it.� Entries for the 2010-11 Awards close on November 5, judging will be from December to February, and the final Awards dinner will be in May 2011. Fun all round at rest home games There were wacky costumes, cheerful faces and chuckles of laughter as the Inter-Rest Home Games kicked off last Friday. Also celebrating the International Day of the Older Person, Bethsaida, Seaview, Lakewood, Waterlea, Springlands and Redwood retirement homes all took part in an afternoon of fun and games at the Foundry Centre. The annual event has always been a highlight of the year for residents and staff who competed in various activities including magnet fishing, tossing the hoop and mini basketball plus much more. Winning the games this year was Redwoodtown Retirement Village with Seaview in second and Bethsaida third. A special visit from Deputy Mayor Jenny Andrews and Mayor Alistair Sowman brought an added smile to the faces of many as residents enjoyed the games.

Golf club open for business - and fun Blenheim Golf Club has the premier 18-hole golf course in Marlborough, says club spokesperson Paul Eden, right. “Some might argue, but we believe that’s true.� “It’s also the oldest – over one hundred years old.� He says the green is now in great condition after a very difficult and wet winter. “The course is in great condition and it’s an ideal time to start golf. INDER, John: It is very important that Marlborough people vote in this election and support Marlborough candidates. My election statement is contained in the voting papers. I am a retired specialist surgeon and retain an active interest in the health services in Marlborough. I believe the board needs medical knowledge and experience. I am committed to ensuring the continued viability and development of Marlborough ‘s Health Services and seeing that Marlborough has a strong voice on the Executive Level of Management which has not happened in recent years. I support the Government initiatives to move more resources to frontline services and to involve Clinicians in management. This is a time of restraint but I will work to protect: 1. All child youth and family services 2. Ensure that the mental Health Sector is given the same emphasis as Physical health. Presently resources only allow treatment of the seriously ill. 3. Timely access to specialist consultation and surgical procedures.

Yealands Wines honoured Marlborough winery Yealands Estate has been honoured for their commitment to sustainable wine tourism at the inaugural Christchurch|South Island Best of Wine Tourism Awards. The Sustainable Wine Tourism Award looks at the impact of the services offered by wineries and the contribution they make to tourism and the economy of the region. The judging criteria centers on the implementation of sustainable initiatives and the integration of the sustainability message into each winery’s wine tourism activities. Independent expert Dr Mark Burdass from the UK will head up the new NMIT Diploma of Aquaculture (Fish Farming and Management) as from December. The first intake begins next year, with the diploma being offered at the Nelson campus. Dr Burdass has had over two decades at Sparsholt College, the largest fish and fisheries college in the UK. He was initially hired by NMIT to design the new Diploma of Aquaculture programme and advise on facilities and outfitting the

new learning areas at Cawthron’s Aquaculture Innovation Centre at Glenduan. “It became a real passion and I got to meet the people and see the region while I was here working. Local boys contest NZ jetboat marathon By Celeste Lodewyk Two local men will be donning their race helmets and taking to the Wairau River in their jet boats next Monday for the first of six race dates for the Kaiapoi ITM 2010 New Zealand Jetboat Marathon. Bryce Idiens and John Derry have been part of the jetboat racing world since ‘babies’, with their fathers having regularly competed for a number of years. Bryce and his ‘Black Pearl’ racing team will be competing in the B-Grade class with his Keelow Craft Challenger, copiloted by Greg Simpson and powered by a 350 Chev 540 horse power engine and American turbine jet unit. In the U-Grade Class (Unlimited) John’s ‘Going Places’ team will be racing New Zealand’s only turbine jet engine powerboat, co-piloted by Brent Hefford. Sponsored by Mother Energy Drink, John has only raced the 1500 horse power, 23 foot Eagle Powerboat once and is looking forward to getting it into the water. “The first time I raced it was in Canada earlier this year and I brought it back to run in the marathon. I’m just looking forward to getting the turbine into the water and hope to get over the finish line,� John laughs. Describing the thrill when racing, Bryce says when the boat is ‘flying’ down the river it is knowing that there is no room for error which creates the real challenge. “When the boat’s going 98 mile an hour

you only have a split second to make a decision, and you don’t want to make the wrong one,â€? he laughs. “It’s great action and gives you that adrenaline rush that all petrol heads love.â€? When plans for the marathon were announced Bryce initially thought it would be too expensive to participate. The total cost for Bryce to compete in the marathon’s B-class amounts to between 10,000 and 15,000. “Greg Simpson from Trade Hire got behind us and rallied up local support so we could afford to compete. To be a local competitor and have the backing of the community is fantastic and greatly appreciated,â€? Bryce says. Fun day aimed at junior riders By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough Motorcycle Club members Shane Dalton and Richard Church are encouraging juniors to ‘ride together’ rather than in areas where motorcycles are not permitted. This is why they have organised a fun day at Golfer’s World in Riverlands this Saturday where juniors of all abilities can enjoy a sociable ride on a purpose built track. “We want to get kids riding together in a fun environment. It’s not racing, kids will be placed according to ability,� Richard says. The ride takes place from 12-3pm for boys and girls aged 0-12-years and involves a small cost. Richard says the fun day is also a way for juniors to meet club members who will be available to discuss the benefits of joining. “Belonging to a club has many benefits and we are always looking to add mem-

bers, regardless of age or ability. “Our concern is the amount of young riders who are riding in unallocated areas, and the council isn’t happy about it happening on council land,� Richard says. With this in mind, the Club has leased land of the council and is in the process of building a permanent track off North Bank Road. “We are creating fun, safe areas for young riders where they can hit the dirt without upsetting anyone or putting themselves at risk,� adds Shane. Youth look to horizon By Celeste Lodewyk “A portion of today’s youth have either forgotten how to dream, or believe they are not worthy of seeking a better life for themselves. It is up to us to fight for them and to help make a difference to their lives.” This is a message from Susan Blake, a nurse who alongside her husband Bob, runs the Horizon Youth Mental Health Centre on a farm in the Onamalutu Valley. In addition to Therapeutic Recreation, Music and Occupational Therapy, Horizon uses animals as part of the motivation for attending therapy as part of their clinical programme, the farm has dogs, alpaca, highland cattle, bison, elk, goats, deer, emu, peacocks, racing pigeons and pheasants to name a few. Named Harambe, the Swahili word for ‘pull together’, the centre is celebrating its’ 10th birthday this year. Both Susan and Bob, now Kiwi citizens, originate from America and have dedicated their lives to help youth recognize their selfworth and self-esteem. The work they do in addressing youth issues such as alcohol and drug addiction, anger management, physical, psychological, emotional and sexual abuse and co-existing mental health issues is an ongoing “battle for healthy alternatives” for the Blake couple and their professional clinical staff. “It’s pretty scary here in New Zealand with so many kids endangering their lives with drugs and alcohol. In addition close to 50 percent of them have depression and other mental health issues and if we don’t

act now and fight for their futures, they’ll end up in the adult justice system,” she says. “These young people should not be treated in the cells. They deserve better from us.” The Centre runs 12-week day programmes for youth aged 13 to 19-years as well as a 90-day, sub-acute care residential programme offering 24 hour, seven days a week counseling. But because the Horizon Mental Health Centre is only funded by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, Susan and Bob rely heavily on community donations and money from their own pocket to keep the centre running. “We fight and struggle for funding, most comes from our own pocket, but if we don’t invest in our children’s futures now it will only get worse,” she says. To cover extra costs involved with picking up and dropping off youth for the day treatment programmes, the centre’s everyday running costs of therapy supplies and food for those in the residential programme, Susan works four days a week at Wairau Hospital, as well as receiving donations from local businesses such as Russell’s Paint & Panel and the Canterbury Community Trust. “We are so grateful to those who are willing to help us. People always appreciate the highly confidential work we do and we will continue to do so as long as we can,” Susan says. “For example, there are many things people can do to help around the farm including digger work, cutting of firewood, gardening plus much more.” PARADISE: Susan Blake.
