All Black legend drops in

By Damian George Marlborough Boys’ College students had the chance to soak up some knowledge from an All Black rugby legend yesterday.

Frank Bunce, a 55-test All Black, spoke at the school yesterday as part of his nationwide tour as an ANZ Rugby World Cup 2011 ambassador.

“It’s really an opportunity for me to offer some advice and help guys make that next step in their careers,” Bunce says of the speaking engagements.

“I talk about mistakes I’ve made in the past and learning from mistakes other people have made - it’s a bit of a short course for them.”

The former centre says he has been impressed with the effort New Zealand’s smaller provinces have put into hosting the tournament, which starts on Friday.

Blenheim is hosting the Russian team during the tournament and

has embraced the country’s culture through initiatives such as erecting Russian street signs and flags and organising Russian language lessons.

“I take my hat off to all of the places I’ve been around the country, especially the smaller ones who are really keen and excited. It’s great to see.”

He says he is not sure what to expect from the Russian team, but it is likely they will be big players who play a physical game.

Marlborough Boys’ College First XV player Corey McCaffrey says it was exciting to meet Bunce in person.

“It’s pretty inspirational - people look up to him and not many people get to meet him,” he says.

Bunce is backing the All Blacks to end their 24-year World Cup drought this year, but is picking England as his dark horse.

The growing number of unregistered dog owners in Marlborough are set to face stiff financial penalties, the Marlborough District Council says.

Council’s Animal Control team leader Candice O’Brien says the number of unregistered dogs in the region has risen from 450 to 679 in the past year.

The last day for registration this year was July 31.

Mrs O’Brien says penalty fees for owners will now apply on top of registration fees, while owners are also liable for an infringement fee of $300, impounding fee of $102, and seizure and sustenance costs associated with impoundment. Penalty fees are 50 per cent of the registration fee.

“Maybe it’s the sign of the economic times; maybe there are more people who aren’t aware of their responsibilities - whatever it is, it makes a lot of time-consuming work for our officers,” Mrs O’Brien says.

Animal Control officers have begun visiting properties to look for dogs not re-registered by the end of July deadline.

More than $70,000 in unpaid fees and fines are currently owed by a total of 481 owners in Marlborough.

By Damian George The Rugby World Cup match between Italy and Russia in Nelson later this month will be an extra special one for Blenheim schoolboy Kurt Simcic.

The eight-year-old will run out onto Trafalgar Park alongside Italian captain Sergio Parisse before the match on September 20 and stand with the team while it sings its national anthem Fratelli d’Italia.

Bohally Intermediate student Wade Wilson, 12, will be leading the Russian side out when it takes on Australia at the same ground on October 1.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunies come courtesy of ANZ’s Future Captains competition, which will see 96 children from across New Zealand accompany

a captain onto the field for each of the tournament’s 48 games.

To make it even more special for Kurt, the letter confirming he had won the prize happened to arrive at his house on August 15 - his birthday.

“We couldn’t get the smile off his face,” Kurt’s mother Niki, who homeschools Kurt and his siblings, says.

“It’s really good for his study too - we’ll have to learn a bit about Italy now.”

ANZ representatives were on hand to surprise Kurt on Thursday with a presentation of his tournament gear.

That included a Rugby World Cup shirt and soft rugby ball, ANZ cap, and minitiaure Webb Ellis Cup money bank.

Kurt says he is looking forward

to the occasion, and is well aware of the significance of the tournament.

“New Zealand was the first team who won the Rugby World Cup,” he says.

Asked if the All Blacks will repeat the dose 24 years on, Kurt says: “I hope we do.”

ANZ Central region general manager Lynne Sutherland has been visiting centres between New Plymouth and Blenheim recently to make the presentations to the winners.

“For these kids, they will be memories for a lifetime, really,” she says.

The Italy-Russia match will be both sides’ second game of the tournament.

The Russia-Australia match is both sides’ last in pool play.

The squad has also expressed an interest in meeting with members of the local Russian community and inviting schools to attend some of its closed training sessions.

The side will hold public training sessions at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park on September 7 and 17.

By Damian George Demolition work for the upgrade of Blenheim’s indoor pool at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 has been completed, with re-tiling of the pool expected to be completed in six to eight weeks.

The upgrade of the pool is part of stage two of the $14 million re-development of the stadium’s aquatic facilities.

Stage one - a new indoor complex including a 10-lane sports pool, toddlers’ pool and leisure pool - was completed in June.

Evan Jones Construction site manager Peter Owen says the walls enclosing the pool will be put up before re-tiling begins.

Stage two, which also includes an outdoor pool and a hydrotherapy/spa for the indoor complex, is on track to be completed by about Christmas, Stadium

chief executive Paul Tredinnick says.

The outdoor pool will comprise a five-lane, 25-metre recreational pool and flow over into a children’s pool.

Mr Tredinnick says that should be completed by Christmas, but the spa area is on track to be finished a little later.

“We anticipate that [to be done] beyond Christmas - just with finishing off landscaping and that sort of thing,” he says.

A new gym overlooking the new complex is expected to be open by Christmas.

The existing stadium complex and the extension are currently separated by a temporary wall which will be removed once the project is complete.

An official opening ceremony will be held once all facilities are operational.

Four Marlborough wines have been crowned Trophy Winners at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2011 awards dinner in Auckland on Saturday.

By Damian George A Wither Road resident says he is angry he has had no say in plans to erect a 20-metre cellphone tower next to his property.

Telecommunications company Chorus the Telecom subsidiary building the tower - started installation work a few days ago on the Witherlea Bible Chapel site.

Resident Brain Powell says the neighbouring properties were given little notification of the plans, and have not had an adequate chance to express their concerns.

“I pay my tax, I pay my rates, and I have no say in what goes on,” he told The Sun yesterday.

“I’m not being unreasonable in wanting to have some say in this.”

Building a cellphone tower less than 25m high is permitted under the Marlborough District Council’s Wairau-Awatere Resorce Management Plan.

But Mr Powell says the tower poses a significant health risk to residents due to

radiation and other pollution - the extent of which is not yet fully known.

A protest against the tower being built was held by about 20 residents on Sunday.

Mr Powell says the council’s district plan needs to be amended so Telecom need more than just a code of compliance to build the towers.

“There’s been no consideration of the neighbours [from the company],” he says.

“There’s two towers gone in quickly now [one was erected in Renwick earlier this year] - now is the time to have a look at it.”

Mr Powell says the council has “bent over backwards” to look at alternative locations for the tower, but Chorus has not budged.

Chorus community relations manager Kathy Wiltshire says letters were sent to the 11 properties adjacent to the Witherlea Bible Chapel building advising them of the plans.

Big response to community awards Nearly 70 nominations have been received for the 2011 TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards.

The 68 nominations submitted is the second largest number in the competition’s history, eclipsing the 63 entries received last year.

The entries have come from 61 voluntary groups and organisations across Marlborough.

TrustPower Community Relations coordinator Pip Tschudin says she is delighted with this year’s response.

“It is wonderful that the Marlborough community has stepped up to make sure the thousands of volunteers working for the benefit of the Marlborough community are being recognised and celebrated through the awards,” she says.

The winners will be announced at a function on October 26.

proteStorS LIaBLe for damaGeS The three men responsible for damaging the Waihopai Valley satellite dome in 2008 may have to pay for part of the estimated $1.2 million repair bill.

The High Court at Wellington last week found Adrian Leason, Peter Murnane and Samuel Land are liable for damages caused by their protest-driven break-in in March last year.

The amount the defendants may have to pay will be considered at another hearing.

The men were found not guilty of burglary and wilful damage following the break-in.

The installation is used by the Government Communications Security Bureau to intercept satellite communications.

He says there is still a lot of work to do before it is up-and-running, including fitting a braking system, installing a drive shaft and finishing work on the engine.

Drug Arm has been using the restoration project as a tool to help also steer troubled youths in the right direction.

Mr Ramsey says he is trying to coach youngsters who have run into trouble with the law into a more purposeful way of thinking.

“We saw some kids who we thought could do with one-on-one mentoring,” he says.

By Damian George The vintage hot rod being restored by Drug Arm Blenheim and its many contributors was on display at Blenheim Elim Church on Sunday.

The 103E Ford Popular, from the late 1940s to early 1950s, was one of more than a dozen vehicles on display at the Father’s Day exhibition.

Drug Arm Blenheim has been voluntarily taking on young people referred to them by police over the last two years to assist in the restoration project.

Organisation chairman Roy Ramsey says the vehicle, now at the ‘rolling chassis’ stage, was

with them and actually try to make a difference.”

He uses the sessions to try and change the mindset of the youngsters by introducing problemsolving techniques to help them think more critically.

He hopes that will then stem into their everyday lives.

“It’s teaching them a different way of thinking. I don’t think they recognise [they are doing it] to be honest, but I recognise that it does make a difference.”

Other vehicles on display on Sunday included a Ford Fiesta, a Holden Monaro, a 1950s Chevy, a Ford Mustang, a tractor, boats, and even a helicopter.

No consent for cell phone tower?

Sir, I am writing this letter with concern of the recent construction of the cell phone tower at the church on Wither Road.

As an adjoining neighbour to the Bible Baptist Open Brethren Church property I was in disbelief that I had had no notification from Telecom or the Council, it came as a bigger shock that this wasn’t required.

I firmly believe that the rules and regulations around this issue need to change so that local residents at least get a chance to have their say and that Telecom or any other Telco must ap-

ply for Resource Consent instead of the way it has been allowed currently.

The people of Marlborough deserve better from the council as I am sure that there would not be too many rate payers that would be happy having a cell site over their fence.

Therefore the District Plan needs to be updated so this cannot happen again.

It is ironic that the Council have just increased our rates, and that this latest addition to our landscape will most definitely devalue our properties.

Renwick Community Memorial Hall Dear Ed, I would like to take issue with comments made by Brian Roughan chaiman of the Renwick Board of trustees over the Hall issue.

Firstly he says the money was granted to the school for the hall was over two years ago All pub charities and Trusts including the Canty Community Trust are required under the trust deed to spend the money within that financial year.What accomodations were made and why?

They are also supposed to spend it on the hall. Why has this not happened.

Why is the money still in their acct 2-3 years later?

The school needs to account for the money sitting in their acct for the period.

Is the money still there? I would like to see the condition in the document where he suggests that the school can only spend this money on the hall if it was a school asset.

There is a statement which details the events leading up to the Hall committee of the time considering a proposal to transfer ownership to the Ministry of Education. This statement was tabled at the most recent meeting of the Renwick Residents Association on 18 August. I urge you to attend the next Renwick Residents Association meeting on Thursday, September 15 at the Renwick Community Memorial Hall. You will be given a chance to ask questions, and these questions will be answered to the best of the elected members’ ability.

Where is it now and how much interest has it gathered?

In the grant application there was no mention of the school owning the hall. As for saying they will give it back if they don’t get the hall, I found that hard to absorb as the maintenance problem still stands. I ask Simon and the BOT to honour the grant for what it was allocated for.

Highlighting dementia awareness More than 43,000 people in New Zealand have dementia and approximately 33 people are being diagnosed with some form of dementia every day.

Marlborough is no exception as the region has a higher than average aging population, so to help support those affected in our community, including family members and carers, Alzheimers Marlborough will be holding a street appeal on Friday, September 16.

This annual fundraiser is being held in conjunction with their ‘Hat Week’, which encourages the community to wear a hat of any shape or size, and collect sponsorship to wear the hat for five days.

The purpose of Hat Week is to bring about an awareness of Dementia to the people of Marlborough by being VERY VISIBLE for the week.

Hat Week is open to the whole community and all ages. To register your

interest phone the Alzheimers Centre on 03 5776172, and you will be supplied with an information kit including how to go about collecting sponsorship money.

Dementia has no cure, so to support the vital work carried out by Alzheimers Marlborough, please give generously.

This happens when there is a blockage or disease in the vascular system.

For this I like to use the shell or spiral pasta as it holds this light sauce better.

Sauce • 2 cans of tomatoes with juice • 4 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 3 cloves of garlic, finely siced • 150grams of Feta, crumbled (I like to use a goat feta) • 1 cup of kalamata olives • Olive oil • Salt & Pepper to taste.

1 ½ cups of dry pasta per person Water for boiling Cook the pasta as per packet instructions; at the same time sauté the garlic in a pan with the leaves of

three sprigs of Rosemary, once soft, tip both cans of tomatoes into the pan, heat through to a simmer. Let the liquid reduce down to half, this helps thicken the sauce. Taste and add salt and pepper. Be careful with the salt as when you add the feta and the olives they will add saltiness to the dish. While the liquid is reducing add the olives so that they heat through.

Once the sauce is reduced to half and the olives are warm, drain the pasta, add pasta and Feta to the sauce and toss through. Serve with a few fresh uncooked rosemary leaves.

FESTIVAL: Marlborough members of the NZ Federation of Women’s Institutes, Theresa Cannon, Vicky Sewell, Glenys Woolley and Amy Cannon are looking forward to entering their arts and crafts into their annual OneDay Festival later this month.

A long tradition that has been enjoyed by the Marlborough Federation of Women’s Institutes is their annual One-Day Festival.

This highly anticipated festival has been an important social event amongst the Institutes, and a way for them to share their many crafty talents.

It takes place Wednesday, September 14 at the Salvation Army hall on George Street.

There will be demonstrations in beads, floral arranging and card making at 10:30am which is open to the public to view at a cost of $5 entry.

The remainder of the festival will be a showcase of entries from members which will be judged and awarded with prizes.

Public relations officer Amy Cannon says the festival is a great way for Institute members to form friendships and get together every year.

Largely uneventful week for police Quiet Tuesday Just one arrest was made on Tuesday: a 17-year-old unemployed man was arrested for breaching his community work in the early afternoon.

Bad taste A 48-year-old unemployed man was arrested on Wednesday morning after being caught stealing Canterbury Earthquake wristbands from the Post Shop Blenheim.

Later, a 22-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested on a warrant for breaching his bail conditions.

Night owl A 23-year-old unemployed man was arrested just after 11pm on Thursday night for breaching his bail curfew.

Earlier, a 17-year-old female student was arrested for breaching the liquor ban and on two warrants for her arrest for failing to appear in court.

Cannabis sting Police arrested a 48-year-old man on Friday after they found cannabis during a search of his Seddon property last month.

Police searched the vineyard worker’s property on August 19.

Family appeals for bike Another Blenheim family has had their Witherlea premises burgled, with thieves making away with a much loved BMX bike (pictured).

The incident took place in town the night of the Combined Colleges Formal, August 5 and has left the bike’s owner devastated by the theft.

The family who do not wish to be named as the investigation continues, says thieves entered their locked garage by forcing open a window using gardening tools.

It has now been five weeks but still no word, so the family is urging that people look at the photograph and report any

sightings to the Blenheim Police.

Brush your baby’s teeth Babies and toddlers are just as much at risk of dental decay as an older child or adult. Caring for your baby’s teeth needs to begin at birth.

With good oral hygiene habits early, as your child grows and develops, they will be well equipped to have healthy teeth for life.

Tips for caring for your baby’s first teeth:

1) Even before your baby’s teeth appear it is recommended that you gently wipe their gums with a moistened soft cloth once a day. During bath-time is a good opportunity.

2) Once the baby or primary teeth start to appear, it is recommended that parents use a baby’s toothbrush with a small head and soft, rounded bristles and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. When old enough encourage your child to spit out toothpaste after brushing.

3) There are special low-fluoride toothpastes that have been developed for young children and these can be introduced from around the age of 18 months, however always read the directions on toothpaste for age suitability.

Use only a smear of toothpaste and teach your child to spit out the toothpaste after brushing.

4) Store all toothpastes out of your child’s reach. Some small children love the taste of toothpaste and will eat it if given the chance.

Breathing new life back into classic cars and motorcycles is something that Riverlands man Mark Stead does best, so it is no wonder that his business Auto Restorations & Creations has been so successful.

Mark established the business, also known as Big Shed Customs in 2001 based on his lifelong passion for restoring old cars back to their former glory.

Since its beginning the business has continued to grow to include qualified mechanic - Steve Mitchell, a painter and panel beater – Chris Murphy and two new trainees Glen Langdon and George Barrett.

“As a result of our attention to detail and quality, on going training of staff and our commitment to our clients, our work load is continually increasing so I decided to expand the team,” Mark says.

Big Shed Customs specialises solely in the body rebuilds and restoration of classic ve-

hicles, custom vehicles, modified vehicles, painting plus much more.

“Unlike other restoration businesses, we don’t carry out crash repair, we focus purely on restorations and custom work,” he says.

One of Mark’s latest projects includes one of the 10 original 1968 Shelby Playboy Convertible (pictured) which was given to Playboy that year.

“Sadly the bunnies probably haven’t aged as well as the car. It is an honour to be given an opportunity to work on a vehicle with such history, Mark says.

“It is being totally disassembled and will be put back to its original condition.”

Friends of the Emergency Department St John is looking for caring and dedicated members for some special volunteer roles.

St John Friends of the Emergency Department play an important role in 18 Emergency Departments nationwide, including Wairau Hospital.

In times of distress, people need more than treatment, they also need information and support. Because Emergency Departments are always busy, staff often don't have time to give patients and their families the support and reassurance they're looking for. That's where St John Friends of the Emergency Department make such a difference.

Some of the tasks they carry out include offering reassurance to patients and their relatives/friends, assisting patients with food and drinks when asked by staff, sitting quietly with a distressed patient, being above all a FRIEND, to listen, to smile.

By Celeste Lodewyk Photographs of children killed by child abuse in New Zealand were displayed at the Renwick War Memorial on Saturday in an effort to raise awareness of children who are abused in their own homes everyday.

The “Stop Death by Abuse” memorial service was held in locations throughout NZ for the children who have died as a result of abuse.

Renwick woman Evelyn McLean organised the Renwick service and invited the public to place a toy at the memorial in acknowledgement of children killed by abuse.

She told The Sun that the act of placing a soft toy at the war memorial was a symbol that the community stood against

child abuse.

“Stopping child abuse is something that I believe in very strongly, so I was more than happy to front up in support of this message,” Evelyn says.

The display began at noon and by 3pm there was a significant line-up of soft toys.

Saturday’s display was part of a nationwide event organised by N.A.R.K, the Nation of Advocates for the Rights of Kids.

N.A.R.K was founded by Cherie Kurarangi Sweeney after being branded a ‘nark’ for speaking to police about the death of Ngaruawahia baby Serenity Scott-Dinnington.

All toys placed at the Renwick memorial are being donated to a local charity.

Marlborough Indoor Bowls Assoc (Inc) Inter Association Competition: The annual competition for the Joan Shearman Memorial Tray was held at the Omaka Marae on Saturday 3 September, between representative teams from Canterbury and Marlborough.

The players, in six teams from each association, contested in six games of fours and pairs alternately. The first five games were very even, without either side gaining any great advantage. The final game, of pairs, was dramatic!

Marlborough won 9 of the 12 games, and drew 2, a total of 29 points, while Canterbury won 1 game, and drew 2, a total of 4 game points, to give a final result of a win to Marlborough by 61 game points to Canterbury’s result of 47 game points.

The Joan Shearman Memorial Try will be competed for in Christchurch next September, provided that a suitable hall is available.

By Celeste Lodewyk Get your engines revving and registration forms ready as the Tattley Rappet Moto Guzzi Rally gears up for Labour Weekend.

Spring Creek is hosting this year’s rally which runs from Friday, October 21 through to Monday, October 24.

The rally has been a long enjoyed annual tradition for Moto Guzzi motorcycle enthusiasts which, up until last year had been run for 16 years.

After the 2010 rally the original organisers announced they would be calling it quits so

Canvastown couple Al Rees and Aleeze Toombs and Nelson couple Rachel and Tony Greig decided to take it on themselves.

The rally will begin on Friday where riders will come together and meet.

On Saturday there will be a poker run through the Queen Charlotte Drive, coming back through Havelock and Renwick.

There will be public bike displays held throughout the poker run, at the Junction Hotel in the afternoon. In addition there will be a Moto Guzzi motorcycle display and a number of demo bikes available to the public to try out, provided by Salero Holdings.

On Sunday the rally will begin to wind down with a 300km ride followed by entertainment and a get together for the riders.

Registrations are still being taken for this highly anticipated event, so don’t delay and get them in to the organisers by September 29 if you want a meal to be booked for you.

“Many people have said they are attending but we are still awaiting their registration forms so get in contact as soon as possible,” Rachel says.

It may have been a draw, but it is the best one I have seen. Four centuries in the first innings, including a 253-run stand between Nathan Astle and Adam Parore, had the Aussies literally making faces in an effort to break the Kiwis’ concentration.

New Zealand took it to the mighty Baggy Greens, coming within a whisker of clinching a huge upset, and securing a remarkable series draw.

3. Hamish Carter, Bevan Docherty, Olympics, Athens, 2004.

Carter recovered from the disappointment of Sydney in 2000 while Docherty trailed close behind him to secure the Kiwis a one-two finish in the arduous event. Carter’s deliverance on so much promise and Docherty’s arrival on the scene was one of New Zealand’s most dominant Olympic displays.

5. Nick Willis, Olympics, Beijing, 2008.

It wasn’t a gold medal, but it was a golden moment. Not since John Walker and Dick Quax in 1976 had a New Zealand track athlete featured in the medals in an Olympic event.

Although he won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Willis’ 1500m silver medalwinning performance was still widely unexpected, and New Zealand’s proudest moment on the track for some time.

Clubs of Marlborough’s card section has added another piece of silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet, taking out the annual New Zealand Chartered Clubs Euchre Championships.

The Marlborough side beat 47 other teams from right across the country in the two-day event held at the Marlborough Convention

Centre last month.

The team played a total of 63 games in the eight-a-side tournament, in which it accumulated the most points.

It is the third time Clubs of Marlborough has won the trophy, after winning it previously in 2001 and 2003.

Team member Cecilia Jones was chosen to play for the South Island team in the North versus South match.

Free clinic for fishers >fisHing Trout fishing enthusiasts will be able to brush up on their skills at the annual Marlborough Freshwater Anglers’ Club coaching clinic starting on Sunday.

The free spinning and fly fishing session will give people a chance to pick up some tips from the club’s fishers and master the art of casting.

It will be held on the banks of the Taylor River, and will also run next Sunday.

Club secretary John Rainey says people are welcome to bring their own gear, but some equipment will be provided.

The club has recently moved from St Andrew’s Church into new clubrooms at the Whitehead Bowling Club.

Mr Rainey says the new facility offers much more space for casting lessons which will be utilised from next year onwards.

The clinic will run from 9.30am until 12pm.

Picton third at Tasman final >golf

By Damian George The Picton Pennant Women’s Golf team has finished third out of four teams at the Tasman District Pennant Matchplay Final held in Karamea early last week.

The Picton side earned the right to play in the event after winning the Marlborough regional matchplay tournament in July.

The Tasman Final, played on August 29 and 30, was won by home side Karamea, representing the Buller-West Coat region.

Motueka, representing Northern Nelson, finished in second, while Central Nelson’s Totaradale finished last.

Picton team member Ricky Ashworth says the team was satisfied with its performance in unfamiliar conditions.

“I don’t think we had any great expectations, but I think we were quite happy with what we did - being on a strange course and not having played there before.”

Mrs Ashworth says the links course provided some challenges, with many undulations and sandy bays not what the team is used to.

Picton played each of the other three teams during the tournament, with all of its six players squaring off against a player from the opposing side in each match.

Two points were awarded for a win, and one for a tie.

It had an 8-4 loss to Motueka and 7-5 win over Totaradale on Monday, and finished with a 6-6 draw with Karamea on Tuesday.

Scores: Karamea 26; Motueka 18; Picton 17; Totaradale 11.

NZ songstress to headline wine and cuisine event

Wine Marlborough has announced that up and coming artist Anna Coddington will be their headline act for the Marlborough Wine and Cuisine event at Brancott Vineyard on October 6.

This event has been put together by the organisers of the Marlborough Wine Festival and aims to showcases the region’s wine and gourmet cuisine to an audience of international Rugby World Cup visitors.

Event Manager Andrea Craig is thrilled at the signing of Coddington and says the whole day has been designed to appeal to the 66percent of Rugby World Cup Visitors seeking a wine and food experience whilst in New Zealand.

“We wanted a headline act that captured the essence of New Zealand and Anna not only has an amazing voice but she is also very kiwi in her onstage presence,” she says.
