Lenny’s adventures now close to home By Celeste Alexander Cats and their mysterious adventures... if only we knew what they got up to! Well in the case of Blenheim cat Lenny, his owners did find out what he got up to after he disappeared for four years. Lenny is a much loved furry friend to local couple Warren and Kathy Johnston who were heartbroken when he went for a walk-about and failed to return home. Fearing the worst, the couple thought they might not see Lenny again until one day a phonecall changed everything. A local vet had been searching for the owners of a grey male cat, fitting the description of Lenny. Sure enough, it was him! After Lenny’s story appeared in the Sun, another twist to the story came to light. Lenny had been living with a couple in Riverlands who named him ‘Puss-Puss’. They too had wondered what happened after Lenny disappeared from their property, so the two couples met and exchanged stories about Lenny and his adventures from the past four years. The Sun contacted Warren and Kathy again to find out how Lenny is doing months later from being reunited with them. “Lenny is doing great! “He doesn’t travel far from home base at all, he’s very content to stay at home. During the day he can be found on a

Faster emergency response 111 calls made from all mobile phones in New Zealand will soon have their locations verified, enabling a faster response in an emergency. Communications Minister Kris Faafoi says enhancements to the Emergency Caller Location Information service will improve this potentially life-saving technology. “Emergency services have told us that the location service is already making a huge difference. Being able to quickly verify callers’ locations means emergency services can be dispatched more quickly and reach those who need help sooner,” Chris says.

Pets and fireworks A reminder to pet owners that public fireworks displays are being held on New Year’s Eve in Picton. If pet owners in the area have animals that become stressed during fireworks, keep them inside and safe. Many animals have acute hearing so loud bangs can really scare them. Fireworks can be terrifying to pets who become highly stressed by them, the SPCA says.

a fun filled evening for all ages, starting at 7pm with lots of music, food stalls, performances, entertainers and activities at the Interislander Kid Zone. From 7-10pm the children’s area will include inflatables, circus style workshops, face painting, balloon twisting and fantastic street entertainment. The main stage will be pumping with the Hollywoods, Hangar 18 and SoerO from 7pm, finishing after the fireworks at around 12.30am. Based in Wellington, The Hollywoods is an all-girl group pro-

viding the complete entertainment package with snazzy costumes, choreography, lighting and great vocal harmonies. These ladies will put on a high energy show with plenty of glitz and glam, while Hangar 18, well known for having toured with top acts such as No Doubt, Silverchair, Everclear and Collective Soul, will be rocking the stage. Auckland band SoerO however will be the main act of the night. Chris Grant (Sola Rosa, D-Dub) on drums and Karika “Junior” Turua (Nathan Haines, The Lady Killers) on bass, and led by singer

‘Teaching crisis will only get worse’ By Celeste Alexander It’s been a huge year for principals and primary school teachers as they held the first strike action in New Zealand for the first time in 24 years. Two strikes took place in Marlborough, the first in August and again in November. There was also a strike day held in August for learning support staff. Recently, NZEI members voted to reject the Government’s latest offer so the Sun spoke with Picton School teacher and Marlborough branch NZEI chairperson, Dave Paterson to ask what lies ahead for teachers in 2019 and how this will affect local primary schools. “Members have rejected the Governments latest offer. There is a crisis because 40% less teachers have trained in the last five years. The average age of teachers is 57 , and one in five new teachers are quitting within their first five years teaching. “Put simply, teaching is no longer seen to be an attractive career to enter. We already are struggling to find enough quality teachers for 2019.

YOUR

This situation will be made worse by the many older teachers who will retire in the next five to eight years. “Locally we see this with jobs which once attracted 30/40 applicants, now getting very few and in some cases no applicants. It is extremely difficult to get a relief teacher locally, with many classes having to either be taken by management or split between already overcrowded classes. “We asked for a 16% payrise over two years as a pay jolt to attract new teachers. We have been offered 9% over three years. We asked for more release time to deal with the increasingly complex problems of children coming into schools. We need to meet parents, agencies, plan special programmes for these increasingly complex behavioural/ academic/social issues facing us. We have been offered no additional time. “It’s also virtually impossible to access the specialist help these children with severe needs are presenting with. The few specialists available already have huge case loads.

“So why would you enter or stay in a profession that was once 15% above the median wage and is now 1% below it? A job where you have not enough time or support to deal with the huge behavourial and social problems that present in our classrooms every day? “It is a crisis. It’s a miracle that the dedicated and professional teachers and principals are holding it together at all. “Our plan is to go back to the Ministry and Government and keep talking. We want them to start listening and help us fix the crisis. Bride show date set, entries welcome By Celeste Alexander The year 2018 has been hugely successful for a number of events that have been held. One being the annual Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show. This show has raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities over the years. In fact it’s been organised by the Lions Clubs for decades and has evolved to what it is today. The 2018 show was held at the ASB Theatre with a cocktail hour before hand and trade tables set up in the foyer with a range of businesses showcasing their products and services. Committee member and show co-ordinator Noeline Stewart says it was so successful that the committee has decided to run it in a similar way again for 2019. “It was lively, everyone had a fantastic time and the trade tables made the whole event

a real celebration of all thing weddings and special occasions,” she says. The committee has chosen the ASB Theatre as the venue once again, and will be holding the Bride of the Year show on July 20, 2019. This year’s winning bride was Sarah Taylor who says it was “an experience like no other”. “I did love it. It was amazing meeting other brides and hearing their wedding day stories. “It’s also great seeing everyone’s beautiful dresses and to have a glass of wine with them and bond over our similar experiences. “I have already recommended the show to so many people... everyone supports one another and it’s so nice to wear your dress again,” she says. Already brides are asking for applications and according

to Noeline, a few have also been received. “Some of these brides are getting married early 2019 and don’t want to miss out on this show so have entered early,” she says. What can be revealed about the 2019 show is that there will be a larger area where businesses can exhibit themselves right through the foyer area and into the Whitehaven Room. For the brides, the application fee has been taken away and it’s free for them to enter. However each bride will be challenged to sell as many tickets to friends and family as they can and the bride with the most will win herself a prize. The committee is taking applications now, so pick up a form from the Sun Newspaper office, the ASB Theatre or by emailing at bblbrideoftheyear@gmail.com

A graphic supplied by NZTA on what the new bridge will look like, with the old bridge behind.

New bridge an exciting development The nailbiting journey across the historic bowstring arch bridge joining State Highway 1 to Grove Road will be a thing of the past once the New Opaoa River Bridge is completed. In July, 2018 the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) appointed Downer NZ to carry out the $21 million construction of the new bridge, which is scheduled to be completed by mid-

2020. Planning for this project began in 2015 after investigations showed the existing bridge, built in 1917, was too narrow and unsuitable for current traffic, particularly heavy vehicles. The new two-lane bridge is being built alongside the current bridge which, after the project is completed, will be retained for pedestrians and cyclists.

On September 4, 2018 a special sod-turning and blessing event was held, attended by neighbouring residents, iwi, business and local community representatives alongside the project team. Once construction is complete, a landscape plan will be carried out to beautify the area and create an attractive gateway to Blenheim.

Come on mothers What is it with some mothers now. I’m in clothes shop last week. Very unhappy child. Mother just kept looking at clothes. I just left the shop. Don’t have to put up with that. I will say I have heard some mother’s talking sternly to a misbehaving child. Good on them.

Council clean it up

Bridge starting times

Our property has reserve land next door. Last Autumn we removed large amounts of creeper vines from councils side of our fence line which was threatening to pull the fence over. It’s unfortunate that we had to remove these problematic creepers ourselves but more unbelievable is how council staff have left the pile of trimmings exactly as we left them. Is it our job not only to clean their side of the fence line but to also remove the debris? Come on guys, you now around it every week and it’s becoming an eyesore

Hi just asking why are they starting the Grove Road bridge so close to Christmas. Why not wait till after Christmas the trucks and cars are banked up now and the Christmas rush has not started yet. Why did they not put the by pass to Riverlands in be for they started the Grove Road bridge would have made things a lot easyer. Horse-drawn hearse ‘unique’

By Celeste Alexander A horse drawn hearse isn’t something the people of Blenheim see on the streets very often. In fact it was only seen once in 2018 when the hearse, built by Dudley Lerwille of Hawkesbury Carriages, was used in the funeral for Jill Holmes. Jill (Jilly) passed away on April 6 and prior to her passing, she had requested that she wanted to ‘go out with a song and a dance’. The eccentric character was well known in Blenheim as the Christmas tree lady and regularly starred on the radio. She was described as being ‘wild at heart’, so it was no surprise when

she discussed the horsedrawn hearse idea when pre-planning her funeral. Geoffrey T Sowman manager and funeral director Barry Holmwood organised for the horse-drawn hearse to carry her from her home where her service was held, through Blenheim to finish at the funeral home. Barry led the procession down her driveway dressed in traditional morning attire and on top of her casket was a model of a Vulcan Bomber, an aircraft she loved. This was the only time that the horse-drawn hearse was used by Geoffrey T Sowmans this year, but there have been other unique modes of

transport incorporated into funeral services, Barry says. The striking polished black hearse was built by Dudley and is one of several Hawkesbury vehicles which can be hired for special occasions. “While we haven’t used the horse-drawn hearse since Jill’s funeral, it’s definitely an option if people choose. “It was a unique farewell for a unique lady, and we can get it for families wanting a special farewell for their loved ones,” Barry says. Other forms of transport used by Barry and his team include a logging truck, a vintage Ford truck and Barry’s own MG replica to name a few. Boxers from the 2018 Fight for Life Ed charity boxing match, Kelsi Brown (blue team) and Annabelle Latz (red team). Annabelle was the winner.

Fight for Life Ed for 2019? By Celeste Alexander Getting fit and raising money for charity has proved to be a winning combination for those who took part in the 2018 Fight for Life Education charity boxing match. This event was a huge highlight for the Marlborough Life Education Trust which raised an incredible $52,000 in 2018, up from the previous total of $45,000. The big question many are asking is; “Will there be another charity boxing match for 2019?”

Life Education Trust board member Michelle Chapman says it’s still being discussed, and a decision will be made in the near future. “We will make an announcement on the Fight for Life Ed Marlborough social media page. But we are blown away by the amount of support this event has received since it first started, and there’s already plenty of interest being shown for another one,” she says. The 2018 charity boxing match featured 10 rounds and one amateur fight. There was a live auction which saw

boxing gear signed by Joseph Parker bring in some large bids. More than 700 people packed out the Marlborough Convention Centre to watch the boxing either ringside or from the Clubs of Marlborough Hall next door, streamed live on a big screen. “The whole event ran quite smoothly, it’s getting better and better each year. A huge thanks also goes to the Marlborough Convention Centre and to the Marlborough Light & Sound for the live streaming,” event co-ordinator Jo McCormick says. Interested in how it all

works? The preparation that goes into an event such as the Fight For Life Education involves months and months of hard work behind the scenes by coaches, management, organisers and the boxers themselves. First people are invited to put in an application, then are invited to a fitness test where coaches and management look at everyone’s level of fitness. The matching process then begins and a selection is announced. Participants train together and after four weeks a final selection is made and everyone is split into two teams. Training then begins and runs for the next 12 weeks. Medical checks and blood

tests are carried out and the boxers are monitored throughout to ensure their match is fair. The night before match, the boxers all meet to be weighed and have a final medical check before being the all clear. The referee talks to them about safety and how the judging process works. For the event, judges who are affiliated with the New Zealand Professional Boxing Association, come from all over the country and a local doctor also sits ringside to monitor the boxers. St John Ambulance staff are on hand throughout the night. “Safety is the most important thing and precautions are taken right throughout

the whole process,” Michelle says. After the event, proceeds from business sponsorship, ticket sales, raffles and the live auction then go to the Marlborough Life Education Trust to support the services offered in primary schools throughout the region. “To give you an idea of the impact this money makes, it costs the trust around $80,000 per year to operate, remembering we don’t receive any government funding. The last Fight for Life Ed brought in $52,000 which is a huge chunk of what’s needed,” Jo says. A decision whether Fight for Life Education will run in 2019 will be based on Boxing NZ and the Life Education national trust.

Not too sure but I think I’ll go camping with friends at Whites Bay or somewhere down the Queens Charlotte Track

Relaxing after Christmas and we have friends visiting from the West Coast for New Years.

I’ve got family visiting from out of town so we’ll probably do something together on New Year’s Eve.

We don’t make a big deal of it, it’s not in our tradition. But we do stay up and have a drink to mark the New Year

I’ve got a toddler so not much. We have an outdoor pizza oven so we’ll have a few friends around for pizza and drinks.

My New Year plan is to go to Picton Ignite and stay up watching movies with my younger brothers.

Lifejackets upgrade here next month By Bill McElhinney Summer’s here and the Marlborough Sounds are beckoning boaties. Have you checked your lifejackets? If you still have an old, damaged or out-of-date lifejacket, there’s some good news on the way. The Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign is back again this summer, and their van will be heading to Marlborough Watercraft on Sunday, January 6, from 8am-11am. “Lifejackets save lives, but old lifejackets are no good in an emergency,” says Coastguard CEO Patrick Holmes. “Lifejackets that are over 10 years old should be replaced even if they look OK. Seawater, sun and general wear and tear impact

how effective they are and many old lifejackets won’t even float, which is a serious concern in an emergency. “Worryingly, many people are also still using lifejackets filled with kapok – a fluffy plant fibre similar to cotton which can absorb water. These lifejackets are extremely dangerous so if you have one, destroy it immediately and replace it with a new, modern one.” The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign provides an easy and accessible way for people to check their lifejackets are up to scratch, and replace them if they aren’t,” Patrick says. Sue Tucker, Old4New community ambassador agrees. “Each year we have people come to the Old4New van with lifejackets that are 30, 40 and even 50 years old,

Treat yourself! New Zealanders needs to be aware that lifejackets don’t last a lifetime.” Since the inception of Old4New, over 10,000 old or damaged lifejackets have been traded in and upgraded, meaning thousands of Kiwis are now

safer out on the water. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is delivered with generous funding from Maritime New Zealand and support from the Southern Trust in partnership with Kiwi companies Hutchwilco and the Giltrap Group.

selection is made by an independent judge for works to be hung in the National Portrait Gallery in Wellington. Caroline’s portrait, ‘The Potter’, features prominent Marlborough potter Sara Scott as the main subject. Sara happens to be a longtime friend of Caroline’s, the pair having connected over their immigration to New Zealand from the United Kingdom many years ago.

“Sara has such a generous spirit and talent that I wanted to capture,” Caroline says. A portrait isn’t born overnight either. Caroline decides who she wants to paint months before she starts. This is the second time that one of Caroline’s portraits has been accepted for a prestigious exhibition.

Where’s the best place for a dip? Planning to go to your favourite beach or river for a swim this summer? It’s easy to check the water quality of your favourite spot before you head out because Council’s recreational bathing sampling programme is underway, with weekly samples collected from 21 sites across Marlborough. Testing continues until March. In summer the risk of catching an infectious diseases from swimming in clear, clean water is usually low. However, after heavy rain, contamination can occur through runoff into waterways. Swimming in discoloured water increases your chance of catching an infection. As a rule of thumb, don’t swim if the water looks dirty or murky, smells or has scum on its surface. You can check the latest results for Marlborough’s favourite swimming spots on the Land and Water Aotearoa website: www.lawa.org. nz/explore-data/marlborough-region/swimming/ There’s also information on the Council website at www.marlborough.govt.nz/recreation/ swimming-and-boating/swimming-locations

Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game released another tanker load of rainbow trout into Lake Argyle and the lower hydro canal at the beginning of December and just before Christmas another 50 'huge' rainbow trout. There will be some tagged fish which when caught, could win the lucky angler a $500 Henderson's voucher. For more information on this competition and licenses visit the Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game website.

Horse trek recalls the long road home for Great War survivors By Bill McElhinney Soldiers returning from WWI were often left to make their own way home. Many felt abandoned, hopeless and segregated from their fellow Kiwis after witnessing the horrors of war. To commemorate this poignant time, and to raise money for service people and civilians with post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI), a group of charity-minded Kiwis are walking and riding 10 horses through a South Island route early in the new year. PTSI continues to impact on the lives of soldiers that have served in arenas including Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, Timor and Afghanistan. The Long Road Home fundraiser begins at St Arnaud on January 5, and will trek 110 km to Hanmer Springs, finishing on January 11. It follows the route taken by soldiers returning from the Great War 100 years ago.

A parade will be held in Blenheim on January 5 before the MarlboroughCanterbury high country trek begins, and a second parade will be held in Hanmer Springs to mark the end of the march on January 11. The Blenheim service at 2pm on January 5 will be held at the Marlborough RSA club memorial wall in Alfred St, with support from the Marlborough Returned and Services Association. Mark Appleton, president of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust, says the Hanmer memorial service at the Soldiers’ Block, Queen Mary Hospital grounds, will also reflect on the fact that the World War I and post-war centenary commemorations are coming to an end. Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley says the venue for the trek’s conclusion is very fitting, as it is the only remain-

ing WW1 Soldier Rehabilitation facility with its unique design still remaining. “I am looking forward to welcoming the mounted rifles and the walkers at the end of The Long Road Home trek, and I encourage everyone to support this good cause,” Winton says. The event sends a message to PTSI sufferers that ‘you will not walk alone’ and has the support of the RSA, with sponsorship from Ryman Healthcare. The use of horses fits well with Ryman connection, Mark says. Whenever the horses and mounted rifle trust team visit retirement villages, the residents love the connection with the friendly animals. Such connections can help take them back to rural memories from younger years. “Older people, a lot of them grew up with horses as kids,” Mark says.

Holiday advice - keep your families and your homes safe By community constable Russ Smith Reduce the risk of theft There are always a few sad stories that emerge over the Christmas and New Year period of families that suffer a house burglary or a theft in which their Christmas presents are stolen. Most thieves are opportunists. This means that they will often be travelling a regular route when they see something that tempts them to take another look. Then while they are snooping around, they may take advantage of an easy target. To reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft or burglary around Christmas time: - Don’t display your presents and gifts so that they are visible to the public. - Don’t leave presents or purchases in plain view in your vehicle while you’re away from it. - Don’t leave your vehicle unlocked while unattended. - Avoid letting the public at large view your house contents (ie; while providing

a Christmas light display on your property). - Don’t leave your house or garage insecure while away from the property. - Don’t advertise the fact that you’re on holiday – have someone clear mail, mow lawns, park a car in the drive occasionally and don’t pull the curtains. Keep safe while on the road If you’re travelling by vehicle during the Christmas holidays, here are some tips to keep you safe: - Start preparation for the

trip, including packing, well before hand. This will ensure you’re not leaving flustered or in a panic because you’re late. - Treating your vehicle to a pre-holiday service with your mechanic makes good sense to reduce the risk of vehicle problems while you’re on holiday. At the very least, make sure your registration and warrant will remain current, wiper blades are in good condition, lights and indicators all work, tyres are legal tread depth and inflated correctly

and oil, brake, washer and radiator fluids are all topped up if necessary. - Sit down and plan your route before you leave, including rest stops about every two hours. - Allow extra time for the journey to avoid speeding to make up time. - Don’t drink alcohol for 12 hours before driving - The driver should ensure that that they are well rested before starting the trip and share driving to reduce fatigue. - Maintain the ‘two-second rule’ and make it a four-second gap in the wet. - When stopping for a rest, have something to eat and drink to keep energy levels up. - Be courteous, pull over when it’s safe and let faster traffic past if you’re driving at less than the speed limit. - Be patient, it’s not worth killing yourself and others just to get past a slower vehicle. Have a safe and happy festive season.

Holiday health care Nelson Marlborough Health (NMH) is running a campaign to help people get the healthcare they may need over the holiday season. The main objective of the campaign is to help people get the care they need, but it also builds on previous year’s efforts to encourage people to ‘save ED for emergencies’. Injured or feeling unwell? Where should I be? People with non-life threatening, short-term illnesses or health problems should see their GP, pharmacist, urgent care medical centre or phone Healthline on 0800 611 116 in the first instance. It’s free to register or enrol with a GP, and enrolled patients pay a reduced consultation fee at that practice.

Know where to go if you are sick or injured these holidays.

Visitors to a medical centre where they’re not enrolled, will pay less if

they have a Community Services Card or High Use Health Card. Recent changes mean all children under 14 are now eligible for free general practice visits, both during the day and after-hours, at participating clinics. If people are not able to see their GP they should go to the Urgent Care Centre in Blenheim. Patients can be referred from these centres for x-rays if required. There is more information about ‘Your Healthcare’ on www.nmdhb. govt.nz/healthcare If you don’t have a doctor call Healthline, 24/7 on 0800 611 116 for free health advice from registered nurses. Due to increasing roles we are seeking an experienced teacher to work between 34-40 hours per week, between the hours of 8am-4.30pm. This teacher needs to be fun loving, reliable, energetic, come with an arsenal of resources, and be a great team player. Our centre’s philosophy embraces the Montessori pedagogy so knowledge in these areas would be an advantage but not essential.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Sports year of unfamiliars make their mark The sporting year has been another stellar one for this tiny country but not in sports most would consider mainstream. Yes, the All Blacks have had another dominant year, the Black Caps have had test series wins over England at home and Pakistan away but lesser sports have had their chance to bask in their success. In no particular order here are some sporting moments which stood out for me. Two bronze medals at the Winter Olympics was a phenomenal achievement for a country that had only won a lone silver medal at the event in 1992 thanks to skier Annelise Coberger. A pair of 16-year-olds achieved in disciplines most people, including myself, didn’t know much about. Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteou, both from Wanaka, won their medals in the big air and freestyle half pipe respectively and at the same time allowed New Zealanders a precious memory. The women’s black sticks hockey team winning Commonwealth Games golf was a tremendous performance. For the past decade, the side had threatened to deliver a major international title but came unstuck when the pressure was at its most intense.

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Nico Porteou, both from Wanaka,

They have struggled at penalty shootouts but won their semifinal against England by winning the sudden death format before smashing Australia in front of their home crowd on the Gold Coast to claim the gold medal. New Zealand’s under-17 women’s footballers’ bronze medal at last month’s World Cup was a typically gritty Kiwi achievement. Just making the quarter-finals was a milestone but when they beat Japan in a penalty shootout

to make the semifinal, the country took notice. While outclassed 2-0 by Spain in the next game, they bounced back to dominate Canada and claim a 2-0 win and a medal to remember their efforts for years to come. Jonelle and Tim Price dominated the two biggest events on the equestrian calendar. Jonelle won the Badminton horse trials just six months after giving birth to the couple’s first child. Not to be outdone, Tim claimed

the Burleigh Horse Trials, making them an under the radar power couple of New Zealand sport. Sam Gaze claimed BMX gold at the Commonwealth Games from fellow Kiwi Anton Cooper. The one-two should have been a crowing moment for them and Kiwi sports fans but Gaze voiced his displeasure at Cooper for trying to gain a winning advantage after he had bike issues. How dare he during a race for a gold medal. Gaze was seen giving Cooper a verbal spray and was photographed giving the fingers in his direction in what was a shameful lack of sportsmanship that he hopefully regrets with the passing of time. Shot putter Tom Walsh continued his ascent towards being the best in the world winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal despite a flat performance. He progressed as his season went on claiming several international titles and claiming personal best distances along the way. Walsh managed the ninth best throw of all-time, and the best for 15 years, with a monster 22.67m heave at Waitakere Stadium. The women’s sevens team has become the best in the world over the past 12 months. Their flair on attack and ferocious

defence has seen them push past the chasing pack and the previous measuring stick, Australia. The Crusaders were such dominant winners of the Super Rugby competition that my social media post after week two proclaiming they should just cancel the season, spare the injuries and let Scott Robertson’s team keep the trophy looked like an inspired piece of fortune telling. Wonder-mare, Winx extended her unbeaten run to 29 consecutive stakes races, including a world record 22 group ones. Her record is so amazing it seems those within racing are now having her line up against smaller, less quality fields because nobody wants the good times to end. The Black Caps deserve a lot of credit for their test series win over Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates, earlier this month. Captain Kane Williamson soared to No 2 in the world batting rankings as the Kiwis won their first away series against Pakistan since 1969. The Wellington Phoenix are still largely unwatchable and the Warriors, well 2019 won’t be any different to any of their other 23 seasons.

Hopai sports day a tradition By Celeste Alexander Looking for some summer fun with the whole family? The much anticipated Hopai Sports is back again for 2019 with the annual family sports and picnic day being held on Saturday, January 5. This event has been enjoyed by locals since 1920 and is very much a tradition for many. The day promises plenty of fun for all ages so if you don’t have it marked on the calendar, add it to your summer plans now. The two big events on the day are the hotly contested Hopai He Man race, which is open to women, men and teams, comprising of a swim and long

hill run and the tug-of-war. Teams return each year to defend their titles from the previous years. In the children’s races there are the Tug’O’War and field events, three-legged race, egg and spoon, sack races and running races. Grandmother and grandfather races never lack for entries, neither do the married women and men’s races. For something hard hitting, the wood chopping event is always a highlight and features local and world class axe men. Organisers encourage people to take along a picnic lunch, their swim suits, deck chairs,

The Hopai committee runs a small shop for the essential sweets, cold drinks and icecream as well as stalls, a sausage sizzle and raffles on the day. There is no bar facility so BYO.
