BORREGAARD INGREDIENTS NEWS
Dear Friends and Partners, The last couple of years have been eventful for the vanillin industry. It is about time to summarise and tell you about all the many exciting things that have happened in our little but global vanillin world. You will find some interesting information and updates, but also a couple of interesting news items. Some of them surprised even us, like the vanillin that is made from a beaver’s back. However, we have developed our business striving to be your category captain for vanillin with a range of products that covers a lot of different needs in the food- and in the food and flavour and fragrance industries. Moreover, we have pointed out the outstanding capabilities in terms of sustainability of our core offer EuroVanillin Supreme, vanillin ex-lignin. Sincerely yours, Thomas Marwedel

Sustain It becomes obvious that natural raw materials are very expensive, have limited access and hardly stand for constant quality and foreseeable price. As a viable alternative, sustainable raw materials might take over this position as contemporary materials: efficiently produced, plannably accessed, safe and made from renewable sources: in the case of EuroVanillin Supreme, wood. Around a year ago Borregaard launched the new webpage www.sustainablevanillin.com. On this page we summarise the main arguments that make EuroVanillin Supreme the
better alternative in terms of environmental friendliness and sustainability. • Borregaard uses wood as raw material. More than 70% of the wood we use is PEFC-certified, while the remaining 30% is harvested in accordance with local environmental laws. This assures that there is less wood processed than there is growing.

nability. • Wood is a renewable raw material, while 90% of the globally available vanillin is made from non-renewable mineral oil. EuroVanillin Supreme is a product of Sustainable Chemistry: Borregaard’s biorefinery concept utilises 90% of the biomass for new products.
This is only a choice of two decisive arguments for customers that are striving to use best in class sustainable raw materials. In addition, the page offers links to more in-depth information.

of the biomass for new products.
PEFC certificate Borregaard uses wood as raw material. More than 70% of the wood we use is PEFC-certified, while the remaining 30% is harvested in accordance with local environmental laws. This assures that there is less wood processed than there is growing. Analysis for Norway shows that the biomass in Norway has significantly grown over the last decades. The product photo is just an illustration of use of the logo. The product has nothing to do with Sustainable Vanillin and Borregaard.
Manufacturers who switch to raw materials that are better suited to environmentallyconscious customers want to show this on the packaging of their products. There are many examples available for reference, such as for sustainable fishing, sustainable cultivation of tea, coffee or palm oil or labels that show that a manufacturer takes care in terms of fair trade or ecological ingredients. Borregaard is providing sustainable vanillin. EuroVanillin Supreme is made from wood, while the majority of the globally available vanillin is made from crude oil. Based on input from our customers we developed a logo that shows where sustainable vanillin is used. This logo will be printed on all our boxes and sales material, but more importantly: it is available to our customers for use on their packaging, when EuroVanillin Supreme is part of the ingredients.
Please contact us at info@vanillin.com if you are interested in EuroVanillin Supreme or in using the Sustainbale Vanillin logo.

Food safety certification This summer, Borregaard’s vanillin and ethyl vanillin manufacturing in Norway was certified in accordance with the international food safety standard FSSC22000. We are proud to maintain high standards when it comes to food and product safety. Borregaard’s guidelines for food safety place strict requirements on the entire organisation, from senior management to each individual employee. Borregaard is the only manufacturer of timber-based vanillin in the world. Our timber-based vanillin is unbeatable when it comes to sustainability compared to vanillin from petrochemical sources. Having obtained FSSC certification, it is now also the newest and best vanilla flavouring agent. Sustainability is an important trend in the food industry. More and more food manufacturers are demanding sustainable raw materials in addition to food safety certification. Borregaard is also certified in accordance with ISO 9001 (quality management systems), ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 50001 (energy management systems).

No Beavers in EuroVanillin :) There are stories in the media that Castoreum, an extract from beaver glands, is used as an aroma compound. The EuroVanillin products from Borregaard have no link to this.
reason it can and is rumoured to have been used in the food and fragrance industry for some time. The labelling is “natural”, but the origin is definitly not the vanillin orchid.
Castoreum is an anal secretion beavers use to mark their territories. It also happens to smell like vanilla. For this
However, you are unlikely to find castoreum in mass-marketed goods. “Milking” the fresh secretions from a
beaver is difficult and expensive. EuroVanillin originates either from lignin from spruce trees or Guaiacol from mineral oil. If a customer should enquire about Castoreum, fell free to contact us for a document stating and explaining this fact.
1year anniversary On October 18th Borregaard celebrated the first anniversary of its listing on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Since then Borregaard has no longer been a member of the Orkla group, but an independent company.
The price per share has increased by around 30% since launch.
