Jerome was founded in 1907 and; by 1909, the start-up town was beginning to grow and the ruts were running deep. On the right side of the photo is Hardwick Real Estate & Insurance followed by a Saloon, Jerome Mercantile, and Pastime Poolhall, and at the far end is Twin Falls Land & Water, and Investment Co. Ltd. Inset: Early days in Jerome.

It isn’t every day that you can find a business like the Buhl Hardware Company that also sold furniture and Undertaking services. The hardware building was there in 1915. Other names next door include The Elison Rexall Drug Store, J. Taylor Lawyer, and the Sewer & Water Company.

The Pepsi-Cola neon sign still can be seen during the wintertime when the leaves from the vine growing on the building have fallen.

These pictures of the Twin Falls Pepsi-Cola bottling company on Third-Avenue West shows the building where Pepsi-Cola and Dr. Swetts were bottled. The Chevrolet trucks are from the 1940s. Pepsi is the invention of pharmacist named Caleb Bradham, a drugstore owner in New Bern, North Carolina. His creation was a mixture of kola nut extract, vanilla and rare nuts. His customers called it “Brad’s Drink”. Caleb decided to call it “Pepsi-Cola”. “Dr. Swett’s Root Beer” was also invented by a pharmacist, Dr. George W. Swett, and was available throughout the U.S. starting in the late 1800s. It was produced by bottling companies until the 1950s. Photos courtesy of Brian Bolton, Pepsi of Twin Falls.

Twin Falls Feed & Ice was built by A. M. Sande in 1907 with an expansion in 1924. Before electricity was available, Mr. Sande would harvest ice from nearby ponds and store it in dust from coal or sawdust-filled sheds to be dispensed throughout the downtown area. The business closed in 1984, and on Memorial Day in 1989, the building went up in smoke from a fire of unknown causes. The land it stood on is now part of the revitalization of downtown Twin Falls.

New on the farm scene in 1923 was this McCormick-Deering tractor attached to a Deering Harvester-Thresher. The color photo shows this tractor tilling the ground at Ritter Island State Park near Thousand Springs in April 2013. Antique farm clubs using implements pulled by horses and tractors tilled and planted a five acre plot with oats. The purpose is to grow the oats to be harvested by birds and wild animals. The event is open to the public.

The City Square in Rupert, with a wonderful park and businesses lined up on all four sides, has always been the place to meet and shop in this small Minidoka County town. This 1930s photo shows the North side of the square anchored on the West side by Roper’s Clothing Store and on the East by Henson’s Food Store.

We were surprised when we found this 1921 photo of trees lining the sides of Kimberly Road. Inset: Kimberly Road has become one of Twin Falls’ busiest pass-through streets for industry and commerce. There is plenty of traffic and it seems to be growing steadily. As for trees, not so much.

Twin Falls folks have always been enthusiastic about new and better automobiles, and still are. This dealer, located on the 300 block of Shoshone Street West, probably sold all of these 1915 REO cars. One block away, photographer William S. Rensimer and his wife Mildred operated their studio at 220 Shoshone Street West, 1910-1917.

Until the Hansen Bridge was built in 1919 at the cost of $100,000, a 16-mile section of the Snake River Gorge was passable only by rowboat, according to the sign on the bottom right. We are somewhat skeptical about this, as it would be quite a feat to lower a rowboat to the river, let alone the passengers. The sign is still there for everyone to see. We would like to know who proof-checked the information. After the bridge was built, traffic still had to take turns crossing as the bridge was not wide enough for traffic coming from opposing sides to pass simultaneously. The current bridge was built in 1966.

Featuring the latest 1914 models of fleet-footed transportation, George F. Huffman’s sale barn was located in Twin Falls at 446 2nd Avenue South (now the Twin Falls City Housing Authority’s Pioneer Square). Huffman also worked part time for the TFFD. During 1915, he earned $22.82 monthly. In 1918 Huffman was a Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy. These men and boys, with their horses, dogs, and shotguns, appear to be preparing for a hunt. Five firemen are in the photograph, too; they are exercising TFFD horses. The white horses are named Tom, Dick, and Harry. The two horses on the right are Percherons. The residence of Veterinary Surgeon Charles W. and Ella C. Jennings is next door, behind the firemen. Photo courtesy of Ron Yates.

Kimberly became the home of the irrigated tract’s first flour mill in 1907, which was located a block east of Main Street, and north of the railroad tracks. The mill was powered by a water-powered generator placed in a nearby canal. Excess electricity was sold to Kimberly residents. Built and owned by W.H. Thomas, Kimberly Electric Mills was a duplicate of his mill in Payette. The building burned in 1920.

William Roper and a partner bought a bankrupt clothing store in 1912. It was known as Roper & Masters Clothing Store. Masters died a year later. Roper and a new partner, E. M. Tomlinson, built a new store on Burley’s Main Street under the name of Roper & Tomlinson. In 1915, Roper bought out Tomlinson. As the business grew, seven new locations, including Rupert, Buhl, and Twin Falls, were added. The business closed in 2000.

Insets: The neon sign on the Twin Falls location shows signs of fading away as the store closed in 2000.

The Roper sign is still visible on the Rupert location, which was at the Northwest corner of the Rupert Square.
