Explore a New Side of Paradise As the most remote inhabited island in the world, I suspected Easter Island was the lone paradise where true Polynesian culture flourished. The most southeastern point of Polynesia, its closest populated neighbor is 1289 miles away. Getting to Easter Island felt like reaching the end of the world, literally. But once I arrived, I could see that Rapa Nui—as the natives call it— presented an authenticity I have not found elsewhere. Within the island’s only town, totem poles, figurative wall carvings, and Leis made of indigenous flowers received guests in every direction. Skilled locals crafted decorative tribal patterns on everyday objects, artistic watercolors of the surrounding views, and ornately embroidered, hand-sewn masterpieces. Noting the lack of hotels and restaurants, which litter most foreign retreats, I could not only feel the richness of this genuine place, I could see it. A place where indulgence in nature and wholehearted traditions equal opulence, Easter Island was as original as it ever was. The dark periods that cloud the Rapa Nui history unveil to us what the other side of paradise might be. Behind every scenic island we call paradise lies a similar story of native population and ways of life being pushed out by more dominant styles and cultures. Capturing the tension of such powerful contrasts, while taking design cues from nature and ancient arts, and adapting methods akin to those of native artisans, our newest collection communicates this sense of two sides of paradise. The side that meets the eyes: a natural, exotic escape with the carefree spirit of Polynesian culture. And the other: One with a violent history of conflicting humans trying to carve out a living in the most remote of lands. Key pieces like our Pacific bed show this intensity visually, using painterly ombré effects in stormy watercolor shades of Deep Sea and Meridian Blue splashing into soothing skies and infuse a quiet stillness.
