Meet our cool friend and the newest member of Milo’s Pack, Bowser! Bowser is a Sulcata Tortoise, also known as an African Spur Tortoise. He is eight years old, very friendly and — contrary to popular belief — very speedy! While we visited Bowser and his dual military parents, he quickly made his way around the fenced in backyard on his very own tortoise-made trail.

Tiny, little Bowser was born in Hawaii and quickly grew to his current 60-pound frame. His diet includes squash, kale, collard greens, cactus and his favorite: red bell peppers. Not green though, he will not touch green bell peppers. In the fall, he also loves pumpkin and when he’s really good he gets a sweet treat of watermelon and strawberries. He is fed just once a day, but he’s surrounded by food in his backyard habitat.

“He mostly eats the lawn,” said his mom.

According to his owners he will gain approximately 100-150 additional pounds during his lifetime which, in captivity, is estimated to be around 80 years! As a military brat, Bowser has lived in four homes during his eight years and he’s about to head back to his Hawaii homeland this fall. Bowser’s not an only child though! He has a doggy brother named Teddy and a human sister named Priya. Teddy and Bowser are best friends and they often play outside together and share their food. Milo is so happy to add Bowser to his pet pack!
