Before the Ring and Proposal Sam and Alison met four years ago at a wine event that they both attended. Sam approached her to ask her name. They spent the rest of the night talking and laughing. Sam took Alison to a scenic overlook of Sandy Hook Bay and reminisced about their first day on the water together on Sam’s boat. “That was the day I knew I loved her and wanted us to be together forever. I got down on one knee and the rest is history.” said Sam. Block Island Because..... “We didn’t just want a destination wedding. We wanted a Block Island wedding. Sam’s family has been coming to Block Island every summer for the last 35 years and he introduced it to me three years ago and I fell in love with its laid back charm.” Wedding Day and Design Prior to the ceremony, Alison recalls the special moments she had with her four soon-to-be stepchildren. “It was important to me to express my love and devotion to them privately before the ceremony. I cried tears of joy all day but these conversations really pulled on my heartstrings!” The wedding ceremony was held at Payne’s Dock on Sam’s parents’ 1952 Army T-Boat The General. Deciding to change things up, the couple had a cocktail hour prior to the ceremony at Mahogany Shoals, which was a
6
hit with the guests. Everyone was able to mingle, have a drink and when it was time, guests were escorted down the dock by the music of bag pipes. When asked what the highlight from their ceremony was, the answer was “the kiss, definitely the kiss!” After Alison and Sam were pronounced husband and wife, a celebratory three gun salute off the boat was fired with The General’s antique signal guns — a 20 year tradition of Sam’s family that honors “colors” during the Block Island sunset. Favors included Alison’s mother’s homemade blackberry jam inserted into canvas tote bags with “Block Island Love” printed on them. The reception was held at the Upstairs Room at Payne’s Dock, and they decided to serve passed hors d’oeuvres, as opposed to a sit down dinner. Catered by Rebecca’s Dockside, everyone raved about the mini lobster rolls and bacon wrapped scallops. The Wedding Weekend A lot of the guests had never been to Block Island, so Sam and Alison encouraged them to make a long weekend out of it. The couple created a wedding website with very detailed information on how to get to the island and options for where to stay. A welcome party was held the evening before the wedding at Kimberly’s and Alison notes that “Our original venue fell through two weeks before the wedding! Kimberly was so amazing, she took us in and made a delicious barbecue spread with only days to prepare.”

Top 3 Pieces of advice: 1. Get your invitations out early so your guests can start reserving their accommodations. The inn’s fill up quickly. 2. Arrive at least four days prior to your wedding and stay a few days after. There is lots to do. 3. Remember that this is an island and “Island time” is a real thing. Exercise your patience.

Before the Ring and Proposal Angela and Brooks first met on a New York City commuter train. It was love at first sight — but it took the pair more than a year to find their way back to one another. They ultimately ran into each other again and the rest, as they say, is history. After five years of dating the couple had exhausted all of the reasons as to why they shouldn’t just make it official. Brooks surprised Angela with an unexpected trip to New York City’s famous Diamond District to select her ring. Afterward, they traveled by ricksha to a Tao restaurant on the upper east side for a celebratory dinner. Block Island Because....... "Destination weddings allow you to gather your friends and family together for several days. We couldn’t bear the idea of having this momentous occasion be over in just a few short hours. We wanted a limitless celebration harnessed only by our imagination" explained Angela and Brooks, adding "We live in the Northeast, so for us, Block Island — like it’s slogan so aptly describes — is close by, yet a world away.” The Day and Design This couple kept it small — 50 people. The ceremony and reception were held at a bed and breakfast — Avonlea, Jewel of the Sea — it is also where they stayed

for the weekend. The blue barn wood arbor doors set the stage for the entire event — they could be seen from a mile away and became an iconic part of the day. Guests were asked in advance to wear white and go barefoot. Between the two, Angela and Brooks have five children; Cody, Jade, Sierra, Ty and Wil. Their children walked Angela down the aisle, carried the rings, and stood up for the couple as witnesses. Angela made her seashell bouquet by hand. After the ceremony, the couple dined with their guests at a single 60-foot table while listening to the steel drum island-style band. The Wedding Weekend This couple created a website for guests that included the weekend itinerary, accommodation options, travel notes, important contact information and a way for guests to RSVP online. Upon check-in, each family was given a nautical beach bag with personalized luggage tags, water, snacks, sunscreen, tissues, an island map, and a tourism guide. An impromptu rehearsal dinner for 35 on the porch at The Surf Hotel was followed by a gathering around a fire pit at the Avonlea with friends. Some of the couple's favorite memories were having their children and closest family and friends gathered on an island thirteen miles out to sea. "It was heaven on earth for me" Angela remarked.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. Do not mistake the laid-back island vibe of your vendors as lackadaisical. They are true professionals and have much wisdom to impart. Listen to them! 2. Remind people about the ferry well in advance of your big day. It’s important that folks know that they must make a reservation and that ferries do sell out. 3. Do not think you will save a ton of money by buying at home and bringing everything with you. Island prices are competitive with mainland prices and it’s a heck of a lot easier than bringing everything with you.

Before the Ring and Proposal Ashley and Mike were first introduced through friends during their college days, but it wasn’t until after college that they really started to interact. The pair were “reunited” at a hockey fundraiser five years ago, and have been inseparable ever since. Fast forward five years. The couple came to the island for their annual 4th of July week vacation. Ashley was unpacking and getting settled in and Mike was trying his hardest to get her out on the balcony — but Ashley wasn’t getting the hint. Finally, he was able to get her out on the balcony and before she knew it, Mike was down on one knee asking for her hand in marriage. Block Island Because....... Ashley has wanted to get married at The Spring House since she was a little girl. “We couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else, plus being able to celebrate the weekend at The Spring House was literally a dream come true. We love this island so much that we wanted to share it with our family and friends. Over the last five years of dating, Block Island has become very special to us and we never thought of another place to get married!” says Ashley. The Day and Design With clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid 60s, the

wedding was held on the front lawn of The Spring House Hotel. With 170 guests in attendance, Ashley says the highlight of the ceremony was saying “I do!” The couple marched down the aisle to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and headed to the veranda where a cocktail party with prosecco and signature cocktails kicked off the wedding celebration. Guests danced the night away to the sounds of SUGAR and enjoyed both the cigar and whiskey bar, as well as the late night pizza party. With speeches that were funny and touching, Ashley and Mike will not forget those moments. Each guest was sent home with a jar of Littlefield Bee Farm Honey — the perfect favor that people are still talking about! The Wedding Weekend A welcome barbecue for all of the guests was held the day before the wedding on the side lawn of The Spring House. A highlight of Ashley and Mike’s weekend was painting “Painted Rock” with family and friends — something they had always wanted to do together. The rehearsal dinner was held at The Barn at Spring House, and included a cocktail hour, live music and a family style Texas barbecue. After the rehearsal dinner, the couple met guests at Winfield’s and then danced the night away at Yellow Kittens. A farewell breakfast the morning after the wedding was a great way to end the weekend with guests.

Before the Ring and Proposal Cameron and Oliver met at a weekly pick-up frisbee game in Boston. Seeing each other several times a week through Frisbee and dates, it became a serious relationship pretty fast. Knowing Cameron’s love for children’s books, he decided to write a children’s book about their relationship. On the day of, Oliver set up candles all over their apartment, and when Cameron walked in the door, Oliver lead her to the couch where the book was. Once she read through it, Oliver proposed. Block Island Because...... This couple just couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. Block Island has always been a very special place for the Lang family. Cameron’s parents live on the island and Cameron grew up working on the island during the summers. The Day and Design There was a gigantic tropical storm that hit and ferries were cancelled on the day of the wedding and for two days afterwards. Several guests had to leave early or never made it at all. The ceremony had to be moved, scrapping the outdoor part of the reception. Cameron says the most heartwarming experience was the incredible sense of love and support felt from their friends and family who braved the tropical storm to stay and celebrate with them. The ceremony, originally planned for Dorrie’s Cove beach, was moved indoors to St. Andrew’s Parish Center. Cameron’s cousins, Kari and John, set up a beautiful driftwood arbor with several beach-like touches. The bride’s brother, Brent, performed the ceremony and kept everybody laughing. The reception was held at the
Block Island Maritime Institute in New Harbor. Highlights of the celebration were a surprise choreographed first dance to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams that involved participation from multiple guests, an incredible toast given by Oliver’s dad that referenced Cameron’s SAT score, and the guests who were very enthusiastic dancers and kept the dance party going long into the night. Favors were personalized Frisbees with the names of all the guests on them. The Wedding Weekend The weekend kicked off with a welcome dinner for all guests at Lewis Farm, at the home of Cameron’s Uncle Keith and Aunt Kathy. The couple hosted a Frisbee game at Heinz Field on the day before the wedding. The couple rented the Hygeia House, along with about 25 of their closest friends. “It was a beautiful house in a perfect location and allowed us to spend extra time with everyone” Cameron recalls, “and the fire pit was especially excellent for s’mores.” A very casual brunch was held at the home of Cameron’s parents on the day after the wedding, complete with delicious Payne’s Dock Donuts. Cameron and Oliver had created a wedding website for their guests with information on travel and accommodations — and also emailed frequently in the days before the wedding as plans were adjusted for the forecasted weather. Looking back, Cameron and Oliver appreciate how flexible and helpful everybody was, both in terms of the vendors and their guests. “We could not have pulled off such an incredible weekend in less-than-perfect circumstances without our awesome vendors and Father Joe.”

Top 3 Pieces of Advice: 1. Stay in a house with all of your friends. You will get less sleep but you will not regret it. 2. Be flexible. The island can make things really interesting, but also awesome. 3. Use local vendors because they know the island really well and can help you make the day run that much more smoothly.
INSPIRATIONAL IDEAS Something for your guests Taking care of your guests is pretty common, after all, they did make the trip to the island for your wedding day! Although you do not need to go over the top, it's the little details that take your wedding up a notch: from a ho-hum gathering to a stylish celebration — and one they will remember! Send them home with a little remembrance of yourselves or the island. Welcome bags have become very popular and useful, especially for people who have never set foot on Block Island before. With maps, itineraries, snacks and sunscreen your guests will love that you thought ahead for them.

Before the Ring and Proposal Michael and Catherine met at a mutual friend’s party in Brooklyn in February of 2011. Catherine spotted Michael from across the room and decided that she would go over and chat him up. The two hit it off right away. Their engagement was all very surprising to Catherine. Michael had just gotten back from New Orleans and while unpacking, he announced in a very casual way that he had something for her. That ‘thing’ happened to be not one but two wedding rings — both of which she got to keep. Needless to say, Catherine said yes. Block Island Because...... Catherine and Michael had a trip planned to the island in August, and one morning Catherine woke up and decided it would be a good idea to just get married on the island during that trip. Michael’s mother lives on Block Island five months out of the year so the couple decided to do the ceremony and reception in her back yard. The Day and Design Catherine and Michael incorporated elements from a variety of cultural traditions including Stefana — crowns in the style of the Greek Orthodox faith — which they made out of lavender picked from Michael’s mother’s garden, some new age reflection and blessing by Michael’s sister Erika, a wildly moving speech by Catherine’s brother Josh, a smashed glass in the Hebrew faith, and exchanged vows as seen in most Christian cer-
emonies. The couple was married under a chuppa (a traditional Jewish wedding arch) decorated by Catherine and her twin sister and Maid of Honor, Elizabeth. Catherine walked down the aisle with her father to the Rolling Stones song “She’s a Rainbow” wearing a 90s Versace gown that she found at a vintage shop in New York City. The couple’s most beautiful memories of the day were basking in the joy and love that radiated from their family and friends, and for Michael — watching Catherine walk down the aisle. The reception was in the same yard. Kimberly catered, and Oyster Dave shucked oysters during the cocktail hour — everyone loved the oyster shooters. The Wedding Weekend Guests stayed in rented houses scattered across the island. This gave many folks the impetus to travel to and fro, see a variety of places, share in late-night revelry and generally engage with the island beyond the most obvious places. The couple agrees that Michael’s mother made everything incredibly special for family and friends. A welcome event was held at Mahogany Shoals — Catherine and Michael’s mothers chose this venue after they bonded over Bloody Marys there. Catherine’s parents threw an intimate barbecue on the Thursday night before the wedding in the house they had rented — where everyone enjoyed lovely food and an amazing full moon.

Before the Ring and Proposal Claudia and Adam met during college at Ohio Wesleyan University. After dating for almost 3 years, the couple graduated and did one year of a long-distance relationship before Adam moved back to Columbus, Ohio and into their first apartment together. On a trip to the island to celebrate 4th of July with Adam’s whole family , Adam proposed to Claudia at the Painted Rock. As soon as they approached the rock, Claudia knew what was happening and started crying. Adam got down on one knee and proposed. Block Island Because...... “We chose Block Island not only for its uniqueness and scenic beauty but especially for how meaningful it is to us personally. Adam’s brother was married at The Sullivan House and his sister, at the Cushman House. He and his family have been going to the island for 25 years. When I was first introduced to Block Island, I knew right away that not only did I want to share in his family tradition, but it is such a special place that I wanted to share it with my family and all of our friends as well.” The Day and Design With a slight twist in tradition, Adam and Claudia both walked down the aisle with both of their parents. The intimacy of the ceremony made it special for the couple. The reception was held under a large tent at Rose Farm Inn. Highlights included the first dance to Elton John’s “Your Song”, the toasts given by Father of

the Bride, Mother of the Groom, Best Man and Maid of Honor. Dancing was definitely the highlight during the reception — the dance floor was packed and everyone was dancing. Favors were beautiful glass ornaments from Blocks of Fudge that were filled with sand, shells, and had “Block Island” printed on them — plus the ornaments could be put to use just in time for the holidays. The couple created a popcorn and fudge table, set up around the Rose Farm fire pit with lanterns, and pashminas for post-reception festivities. The Wedding Weekend With a tropical storm that had cancelled the boats for three days the weekend before, the weather could not have been better to kick off Claudia and Adam’s wedding events at a casual cocktail party held at one of the rental houses. A welcome dinner for all of the guests was held the night before the wedding at the Cumby’s home. With a tent in the yard, everyone gathered for a lobster bake. A brunch was held on Sunday in the reception tent at the Rose Farm Inn — a nice place to gather together before the weekend came to a close. The omelet station was big hit! Adam and Claudia agree that the most unique thing about their wedding was the location. The majority of their family and friends had never been to Block Island before — so that made everything very unique and special.

Before the Ring and Proposal Dana and Chip met each other via today’s digital dating age. A week after they started dating, Chip got a black lab puppy. One-and-a-half years later, after eating dinner at a favorite sushi restaurant, the couple went for a walk around the town square with the dog to see the Christmas lights. Chip had snuck an engraved tag on Dale’s collar that said “Will You Marry Me, Dana?” Block Island Because…… It was a setting unlike any other that most of the guests had ever been to. Dana has spent summers on the island since she was one year old and Dana’s parents are now full time residents. The Day and Design The wedding ceremony was held at the property of family friends on the island. With rolling fields and sweeping vistas, the backdrop for the ceremony was breathtaking. Both Dana and Chip wrote their own vows. “Terrifying” says Dana, “but one of my favorite memories of the entire day.” Chip’s favorite memory of the day was seeing the bride walk across the lawn at the ceremony. The couple had a few major hiccups right before the wedding — like not knowing they needed an event per-
mit for a backyard wedding and having to plead their case before the Town Council, leaving all the name place cards out in the rain the night before the wedding; finding out the band missed the ferry the night before — as well as the first ferry the morning of the wedding, but made it in time to play at the reception. Many DIY touches decorated the reception, held at the Bride’s family home, including hanging floral branch wreaths hand made by Dana’s aunt and uncle, runners and napkins hand-dyed by Dana and her aunts, stone place-settings collected by family, and all signage made by Dana. The bride’s father (a documentary film editor) made a video of the bride and groom and used a projector to play it on the angled tent ceiling. The Wedding Weekend Weekend events included a Naddaff vs. Wiedenmayer family basketball game, a cocktail party at a family friend’s home, a rehearsal dinner at the Hotel Manisses and a welcome party at Ballard’s — complete with a bonfire with s’mores and appetizers, and a Tiki bar on the beach. A farewell brunch was held at the bride’s home with a Bloody Mary & mimosa bar. Both the bride and groom went for sunrise ocean swims with their bridal parties the morning of the wedding - bride on the east side, groom on the south side.

Top 3 Pieces of advice: 1. Impress upon guests really early to book accommodations and ferry reservations. 2. If you have a backyard wedding, have a plan B location for weather - even if only for peace of mind. 3. Delegate any decision making that needed to happen on the “day of ” to someone else. At that point you don’t even care, you just want to enjoy your family and friends and each other.
WEDDING CHECK LIST 10-12 MONTHS OUT Come up with an estimated guest count Make a list of all the people you would like to see at the wedding. Keep in mind: more guests equals more money. Make an A list and a B list and be prepared to trim the guest list if budget requires. Discuss a Budget Decide on three different preferred dates for your wedding and list in order of preference. Remember that June and September is peak wedding season for Block Island — venues may have restrictions that don’t meet your guest count or budget. July and August weddings — most hotels will have a three night minimum required of your guests. If you are on a tight budget, consider having your wedding on a day other than Saturday. Discuss what kind of wedding you envision Formal or casual, tented or indoor, buffet or plated. Discuss what your priorities are Food? good music? decor? location? Book ceremony location and pay deposit Book reception location and pay deposit Reserve blocks of rooms for wedding guests Begin gathering ideas from bridal magazines and web-sites See what your tastes are regarding flowers, decor, cakes, dresses, invites. The Day and Design It had been cold and rainy the day before, but Danielle was determined to have an outdoor ceremony, and she did when the sun came out and the day turned out to be beautiful. The ceremony was held on a Sunday on the back lawn of The 1661 Inn. Because Mauricio’s family lives in Brazil, the two families were meeting for the first time. The guests stayed at hotels nearby and most of the immediate families stayed together. A low-key rehearsal dinner was hosted at the National Hotel the night before the wedding, and a departure brunch gathering was held before the weekend ended.

Before the Ring and Proposal Denise and Sean have known each other for nine years. Although they met many years ago, they have stayed friendly through Facebook. The two ran into each other and right away knew “this was it.” Seven months later, they got engaged on Easter. Easter is Denise’s favorite holiday, so Sean made it extra special. Denise sure was surprised when she opened the little crystal egg that held a beautiful engagement ring. Block Island Because…… Denise and Sean wanted to go somewhere that was close, but different. While searching for possibilities, the pair came across Block Island, did some research, and discovered it would only be a few hours away. Deciding that Block Island was the place, they called a few inns and hotels and finally booked a room at the Hotel Manisses. The Day and Design This small wedding for two took place on the beach just south of Ballard’s. With only the officiant and the groom waiting on the beach, Denise made her way down to them. They read their own vows to each other and then sealed the deal with a kiss. The Hotel Manisses surprised the newlyweds with a wedding cake when they returned to the hotel. Sean and Denise are still talking about the entire four- day trip to Block Island and are so happy

that they did things just the way they wanted to. Once back home in New Jersey, a family brunch was held with about 75 of their closest friends and family, along with Denise’s children. “It was beautiful” says Denise, “Sean is my best friend, I love him more than anything. I’m looking forward to forever with him. He’s a great step-father to my boys, we are very lucky to have him.” The Wedding Weekend Sean is in the Army — he was away at training until 36 hours before this couple planned to leave to drive up to Rhode Island. Denise was getting nervous when his flight was canceled, but as fate would have it, Sean finally got on a flight after switching airports. Sean and Denise eloped to Block Island. August 23 is a special day for this couple — it marked their one year anniversary of dating. Denise had been married once before and has two children from that marriage. “Sean is a private guy and really didn’t want a big wedding,” explained Denise “We know it wasn’t the ideal situation, however it was just what we wanted — we wanted that date and we wanted just us.” While making the arrangements, Denise came across photographer Rose Schaller. “She was truly amazing,” Denise said “She pieced everything else together for us.” Rose even drove the couple around the island to several iconic spots for photographs. Prior to getting married, Sean and Denise walked the island and enjoyed just spending the day with each other— stress free.

Before the Ring and Proposal Katie and Tom met in their third year of law school at the University of Georgia. Neither of them were looking for a serious relationship but they became friends. By graduation, both knew that this was more than a casual friendship. For two years following graduation they maintained a long distance relationship. When it became apparent that they were serious about a future together, Katie relocated to Atlanta. A year later, Tom proposed — the proposal was simple and perfect, just the two of them on a porch decorated with flowers. Tom had also arranged for Katie’s sister and college friend to fly into town, and hosted a huge surprise celebration dinner with all of their Atlanta friends the night he proposed. Block Island Because…… Every summer Katie and her brother and sisters looked forward to the family vacation on Block Island. Tom had visited Block Island and he too fell in love with the idea of a wedding on the island. Both agreed that since friends would be traveling from all over the country, a week long celebration would offer a perfect combination — a naturally beautiful island with so much to see and do. The Day and Design The wedding ceremony took place at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Katie and Tom say highlights in-

cluded readings done by family and close friends, and saying their vows to each other. The couple loved riding through town in a family friend’s vintage convertible after the ceremony – everyone was waving and cheering. Formal photographs with their wedding party were taken on the beach by the North Light before Katie and Tom sent the wedding party on to The Sullivan House and enjoyed a few moments alone as newlyweds. Guests enjoyed the cocktail hour on the lawn overlooking New Harbor. The evening included the first dance, a delicious dinner, heartfelt speeches from Katie’s parents, sisters, and the best man, and cutting the cake. The last dance of the night was very special for this couple — surrounded by friends and family on the dance floor. After the reception, guests changed into casual attire and were greeted by the bride and groom at the Yellow Kittens where the celebration continued. The Wedding Weekend Guests traveled to Block Island from all over the country, so many came days in advance. Welcome bags included scheduled events, activities, and tours that could be enjoyed. Both families hosted dinners for guests. The rehearsal dinner was at Ballard‘s,and guests were invited to the bonfire afterwards. Katie and Tom are still talking about the amount of fun their guests had — everyone was celebrating from the moment they stepped onto Block Island until the moment they left.

Before the Ring and Proposal Kyle had moved to Connecticut to go to Quinnipiac Law school, and a couple of years later Nikki moved to Connecticut to be closer to her family. While Kyle was bartending at a restaurant, Nikki began working as a waitress at the same spot. Hitting it off immediately, this couple has lived together since their first month together. Dating for about three years before their engagement, the couple had always talked about wanting a destination wedding. With that in mind, during a vacation to Anna Maria Island, FL, Kyle took Nikki for a stroll on the beach during sunset, dropped to one knee and proposed to her.
couple, was a highlight. Though it was not a beach wedding, it was still a reminder that they were on a beautiful island. Other highlights were the lawn games for guests to play, Nikki serenading Kyle to Celine Dion, and the heartfelt and funny speeches from the Best Man and Matrons of Honor — who did a rap to New Kids on the Block and changed it to Newlyweds on the Block. The couple made nearly all of the decorations for the day themselves and instead of purchasing traditional favors, the couple chose to hand-craft each table setting as a memento for the guests to take home. When the reception was over, the party continued at the Yellow Kittens with live music and dancing.
Block Island Because…… Kyle and Nikki wanted a small and intimate wedding — yet memorable and fun. Kyle took Nikki to Block Island one year for her birthday and fell in love with the place. It was close enough to be comfortable, but far enough to be special.
The Wedding Weekend Knowing that destination weddings take more time to plan, Nikki and Kyle made sure to send out the savethe-dates very early to give everyone plenty of time to make travel plans. They created a wedding website that had helpful information such as directions to the ferry,ferry times, room block information, and a map of the island showing the location of The Sullivan House. With a bumpy start to the trip, which included several days of ferry cancellations due to a tropical storm the weekend before, Kyle and Nikki made it to the island a day later than planned. The rehearsal dinner was held at The Spring House and the couple met up with guests who had arrived early to have drinks at the firepits behind The National Hotel.
The Day and Design One of the most beautiful memories of the wedding day was their “first look.” They did this mainly to be able to spend more time with wedding guests after the ceremony. “I will always remember that moment” Kyle remarked. The ceremony took place over-looking the Great Salt Pond, a view the guests are still talking about. A sand ceremony, which was very symbolic to the

Before the Ring and Proposal Winifred and Brian met on their first day of law school at University of Connecticut School of Law. Having all of their classes together, the couple got to know each other outside of the classroom once Brian stopped spending all his weekends on Block Island. On July 4, 2015, Brian took Winifred and their dog Freddie, for a walk on the beach at Grace’s Cove, and proposed at the same spot where his father had proposed to his mother 32 years before. The engagement ring was made by Brian’s father, local jeweler Peter Gibbons. Block Island because…… Brian and Winifred feel like it was a perfect way to share the Block Island experience with many of Winifred’s family and friends. “The Island’s beauty provided the perfect setting for our wedding and we couldn’t have imagined getting married anywhere else.” The Day and Design Deciding to do “first look’” photos before the wedding, Brian recalls that one of his favorite memories was seeing his bride for the first time at the Southeast Light. Winifred described the same moment as one of joy, and total calm. The ceremony was held at Saint Andrew Catholic Church and highlights included music by Winifred’s cousins and reciting their traditional vows by memory. The reception was held at The Spring
House where cocktails were served on the porch, food was served on family style banquet tables and guests danced in Victoria’s Parlor. Heartfelt speeches were given by the Matron of Honor and by the co-Best Men, Scott Gibbons and Harry Pike, and the newlyweds surprised everyone with their dance moves. Winifred says that dancing with all of her guests to an epic playlist by DJ Danielle was a huge highlight of the evening — even her mother was out on the dance floor for almost every song! The Wedding Weekend Winifred and Brian had a wedding website with all the key information for guests. Welcome bags, embroidered by the mother-of-the-bride, were given to all of the out of town guests. Personal notes were dropped into each bag with suggestions of the couple’s favorite places on the island, along with a list of activities they thought guests would enjoy. The couple gave the groomsmen Vineyard Vines Block Island bowties from Mahoney’s Clothier and the bridesmaids received Block Island pendants made by the groom’s father. A close friend hosted a bridal shower for Winifred at The 1661 and the rehearsal dinner, reception, and farewell brunch were held at The Spring House. During the week before the wedding, Winifred and her parents rented old West Side Baptist Church, which gave them access to their very own church bell — Winifred’s mother got to ring the bell the morning of the wedding.

Have a wedding coordinator for the day of to handle all the details, especially if you have deliveries coming over on the ferry.

"Block Island became our home away from home in 2015, when we visited for the first time. We enjoyed the bluffs, mud painting, restaurants, biking, scooters, restaurants, shops and observing the beautiful landscape. For the next year, without me knowing, Colin was planning his proposal. On August 18, 2016, we set off to dinner at The Spring House carrying our cooler to enjoy the sunset at the beach afterwards. The taxi driver that picked us up at The Spring House already knew Colin's plan and he didn't say a peep or show a sign. We got to the cove, set up our blanket and wine as usual and next I knew we were engaged, embracing and celebrating the most special moment of our lives together. To top it off, a local amateur photographer was taking photos of the whole entire experience. Colin saw him off in the distance, and I saw him as he approached asking to take our first picture as an engaged couple. I thought for sure that Colin set this up and it was just another amazing surprise you only find on Block Island. We went out dancing at Yellow Kittens after and walked back to the Rose Farm Inn with love in our hearts and exciting stories to share of all of the new people we met throughout the day. There is no other place in the world that would've captured our love and engagement this way. Our wedding will be at the Rose Farm Inn on July 1, 2017. Now we have even more reasons to visit the island to plan and get ready!" 40

“I met my fiancé over six years ago when we studied together at the University of Rhode Island. As a birthday gift, Glenn took me on my first trip to Block Island in the summer of 2010. He surprised me with a Rustic Rides horse back riding trip, which turned into an incredible hike down to Grace’s Cove. After that, Glenn introduced me to his favorite restaurants and bars around the island. Since that day I have been obsessed with Block Island and we return frequently.
