Chelsea Phelan and Josh Redd Photos by Kate Ryan Payne Road 9. 30. 2012 She: 31, real estate agent at Ballard Hall Real Estate, from Block Island He: 38, co-owner of North Atlantic Builders, from Maryland I grew up out here and Josh’s family vacationed at the Narragansett Inn in the 1980s. He came out here in 1993 for his first full summer and over the years worked a variety of different jobs — mainly at Finn’s and then construction. He moved to British Columbia and then returned on vacation in 2010. That’s when we met through mutual friends. He moved back to the island permanently in the fall of 2010. We were engaged while on vacation in Zermatt, Switzerland, in March 2012. We wanted to get married out here because it’s our home and a special place to us and my parents have a beautiful property, so it was an easy choice for us. (#4) Block Island Weddings

What was most successful about your wedding? We chose September because we wanted to get married that fall and have it outside before Columbus Day weekend. The weather was cold and rainy all weekend until about one hour before the ceremony. Then it turned into a gorgeous fall day and night with a full moon. We were very lucky. The weather, along with having all of our family and friends gathered together, would be the most successful part of our wedding. (#3, #4) The food was great. We had a buffet, but passed around a lot of the appetizers. Poor People’s Pub catered it in a tent next to the house and did an amazing job for us. They were very easy to work with and offered such variety. I would highly recommend them. (#1, #2) The pizza at the end was a success. I would recommend that, too, especially at the end after people have had a couple of drinks. We had about 200 people and served about 20 pizzas. Our photographer, Kate Ryan. She doesn’t do a lot of wedding photography but it was good to have someone I know who lives out here. It made us comfortable.

Our wedding was low key, not formal. There was no sit down dinner, no dances. It was more like a big party and it was for us. Neither of us was keen on being the center of attention. If your best friends were getting married out here next year, what advice would you give them? • Take help when people offer it. We did the wedding on our own with a lot of help from family and friends. • Do what makes you feel comfortable. • Don’t worry about the weather. It poured all morning until an hour before the wedding. It all worked out perfectly. • Do photos before the ceremony. That way you get to enjoy the reception. We took 90% of our photos before the ceremony. What would you do differently? Nothing. We were both happy with everything.

Hanna Greenlee and Robert Martin Photos by Trevor Holden Cormorant Cove 9.21.2013 She: 27, works for Phillips Real Estate and the Beachead, from City Island, New York He: 30, landscaper for Hall’s Mowing Service, from Richfield Springs, New York I have been coming to the island my whole life visiting my grandparents, the late Dorothy and Ralph Greenlee, working summers since I was 14 and living here year round for three years. Rob came out to the island to work for a summer nine years ago and never left. Most people know him as Magic Rob — he’s a magician. We met on New Year’s Eve 2010 at Yellow Kittens. He proposed in our apartment less than 12 months later. We never even talked about where we’d get married, I’ve envisioned getting married on my dock since I knew what a wedding was. Where was where our heart was, Block Island. So it was just a matter of when and September slows down for us and it’s our favorite time of year out here. Block Island Weddings

What was most successful about your wedding? I owe a lot of thanks to many friends and family members for making my wedding successful. We had Howie Rice deliver wedding guests to and from our wedding and reception with his school bus. There was absolutely no way we could have succeeded in getting 200 people down to a secluded beach on a dirt road. (#1) A friend of ours drove my bridal party, my parents, and me in his boat from the Coast Guard Station to my dock. The coolest way to arrive at your own wedding! (#2) Our ceremony was very laid back, on a beach in Cormorant Cove. All our guests stood around my family’s dock while Rob and I were married. The weather and the tide cooperated beautifully. (#3, #4, #8) My brother Cameron played all the music for our ceremony with help from one of my bridesmaids and my other brother Travis. (#5) The Beachead catered an incredible spread at our reception and made miracles happen when the cupcakes and cake for our wedding arrived a complete mess.

We were concerned about having our dog at our wedding, because of such a large crowd. But Zephyr was so happy and had such a fun time jumping in the water in his bowtie and running up on the dock while we said our vows. I’m so glad we included him. (#6, #7, #8) If your best friends were getting married out here next year, what advice would you give them? Find somewhere special and meaningful to you and plan to have the wedding/ceremony there. As complicated as it might seem, it makes the experience so much more special. Our ceremony was on a beach I’ve spent a good portion of my life on. And our reception was on the property my husband first called home on the island — we had Sean Kivlehan at the Sullivan House put up a tent there and it couldn’t have been more perfect. What would you do differently? Nothing. Sure small things created road blocks along the way, but if I changed anything it wouldn’t make it the most perfect day of my entire life. I lived every second of that day and it was incredible. 5

Jessica Brame and Jeffrey Holden Photos by Kris Avedisian Cushman House 6.22.2013 She: 29, event designer for Ryan Designs in Narragansett, from Burlington, North Carolina He: 30, contractor on Block Island, from Warwick, Rhode Island We met while we both were still in college and were working on Block Island for the summer. Both of us had been working on the island for many summers — I at Aldo’s restaurant and Jeff at Rebecca’s takeout. We were together for six years before we got engaged. It was almost Christmas and we were exchanging Christmas gifts a little early, Jeff had gotten me new skis and winter gear. He handed me a one last present which was a pair of heavy duty gloves, weirdly he asked me to try them on to make sure that they fit.

When I put my hand inside the glove the ring was right inside the ring finger! I looked up and Jeff was on one knee; of course I said yes! What was most successful about your wedding? Excellent weather. It had been a gloomy gray June but we had perfect weather for the entire weekend. Everything went off without a hitch. We had the most beautiful tent that Ryan Designs fully draped with fabric inside. It was as if we were all inside a gorgeous room filled with beautiful fabric and chandeliers. You wouldn’t have even known it was a tent at all! (#1) The food was wonderful. Kimberly at the Beachead did it. There was amazing lobster mac and cheese, lamb lollipops, and individual tuna nachos. And we had Mike Dugan and Jessica Willi bartending and they kept everyone smiling. All of my family members made it from North Carolina, even the grandmothers. They stayed for the

weekend. Both families were at the Cushman House. If your best friends were getting married out here next year, what advice would you give them? Stay local. We used lots of vendors from the island and then a few who knew the ferry schedule and how to make sure everything came together properly. Danielle Duffy was our DJ, Poor Peoples Pub catered our rehearsal dinner at the Cushman House, cake and cupcakes by Alicia Martin of Block Island, hair by Liz Tucker, makeup by Danielle Bisbano. Heather Littlefield played music for the ceremony and we were married by one of our best friends, Kristen Forbes. What would you do differently? I don’t think I would change one thing, I only wish it hadn’t gone by as quickly as everyone said it would. Everyone was so full of love, it was so much fun and everyone had such a great time.

Getting married on an island means adding some unique items to your To Do List, from planning around minimum-stays at hotels in peak season (something to look into 10-12 months before your wedding) to making car reservations on the ferry for yourselves and your off-island vendors (something to tackle around 9 months out). What was most successful about your wedding? The location was the best I could imagine, especially since we used Adrian’s private access. We were able to take pictures without a lot of other people walking through the area. Eating at the Beachead on the deck. Kimberly put flowers on three long tables. The bonfire at the beach. The children, our nieces and nephews and my stepson, really enjoyed it. Just being able to share Block Island with our family.

We had a more personal and smaller wedding, only 25 guests. If your best friends were getting married out here next year, what advice would you give them? I would tell them to use Kinga [Kaminska], who did my hair. She is amazing. I showed her a picture and she did it. Also, for dessert, Sugar Rush. We had cupcakes and cake pops. What would you do differently? I would have chosen July not August. August is a huge tourist season. Other than that, it’s Block Island. You can’t complain.

Colby Lasorsa and Charlie Millikin Photos by Trevor Holden Pilot Hill 9.28.2013 She: 30, restaurant manager of the Mohegan Cafe & Brewery, from Fitchburg, Massachusetts He: 34, contractor and owner of CMC Construction BI, from Block Island We met in the winter of 2009 at Club Soda. I decided to move back here on a whim and met him a few weeks later. Let’s just say that wasn’t planned. You don’t intend to move to Block Island that time of year and meet someone for the first time whom you should have run into a few thousand times before while summering here. Both of us had long-time relationships ending and the timing was, well, perfect. On the other hand, our proposal couldn’t have gone more wrong. Here is this, let’s say, unromantic guy (much to his knowledge) with this elaborate romantic 10

2

plan to take me to a spot up near the cliffs by the North Light to propose on this beautiful Friday evening. Unaware of this, I decided on a whim to take an intro exercise class and blew his whole plan. Early the next morning he asked, and I quote, “So you wanna do this?” I must have looked confused enough for him to drop to one knee and ask me the proper way. It was perfect in our own weird way. We chose to have our wedding at his family’s farmhouse. There is something so magical that the land there holds. The open fields where the road turns to dirt off of Pilot Hill has always been my favorite running loop on the island — the sunset used to literally stop me in my tracks. Who would have thought that I would marry that man from that soil? What was most successful about your wedding? Going with the personal details that made the most sense to us. My grandmother and mother leading us all through the fields to the ceremony site was the best

start. (#1) My friend Dave Flamand played guitar while people were arriving and we served Spiked Apple Cider and champagne to guests right then to cut to the chase. The weather was absolutely perfect. Clear, no humidity, no wind. The food was a big success. Kimberly at the Beachead did the catering. She was very adapting to budget and my views. We served the food buffet style and featured a family recipe for my father’s sauce and meatballs. I provided her with a sample a few weeks before and she nailed it! The theme was a big success. I love trees and their shape in nature. So I went with apple trees. Being a fall wedding it fit. Our favor was personal jars of applesauce my parents made. (#2) In lieu of traditional wedding cake we recreated Charlie’s grandmother’s apple crisp recipe. Kimberly once again perfected that and we served it individually with vanilla ice cream. All of the DIY things that took up a lot of time made the sight very special. I made all of my large Block Island Weddings

3

5 4

centerpieces by cutting off the tops of dead bushes out here in the winter that were silverized from the salt air. I ordered some tall cylindrical vases and stuck the branches in beach sand to make a mini faux apple tree. I named each table a different apple variety and painted it on driftwood. The seating chart was apples with a pushpin and a paper leaf with your name directing you to a table. I ordered loose flowers from Suzanne at Blazing Star Farm and made all of my vases the day before. It was fun cutting and creating while drinking some white wine with my family. (#5) We wrote our own vows. There were no parts that started “repeat after me.” The vows were about our lives and the promise to stick together through all of the chaos that encompasses having a small family and learning about each other as we go. (#3) I actually sang a song to Charlie after dinner and before everyone started dancing. Thea Monje played guitar and did a fantastic job. I’m such a fan of hers. She is such a spectacular young woman. The song was “Near You Always” by Jewel. An old classic for me. It Block Island Weddings

was a surprise to Charlie and it was then that he finally broke down and cried. (#6) If your best friends were getting married out here next year, what advice would you give them? Do what feels right to you. Don’t include what everyone says you have to include. It should be personal. And for goodness sakes, get a microphone and add a small speaker or sound system to your ceremony. The wind is so unpredictable out here especially an outdoor venue and nobody likes just seeing your mouths moving and not hearing a thing. It was one of my must-haves for the ceremony. Also, don’t spend a lot of money on invitations. People now just save the date in their phones and toss all the fuss. Ribbon, fancy ties, you can keep it. Mine cost $10 for 100 invites, response cards and all envelopes from the Staples clearance rack. Then I printed them at home and voila!

What would you do differently? I wanted everything to be perfect so I was at the reception site ’til about noon finishing last minute touches. Mind you the ceremony was at 3:30. In hindsight I would have let those things go in order to hang out with the girls a little longer beforehand. Also, I would have taken some family photos and photos with the bridesmaids before the ceremony. It would have been nice to enjoy cocktail hour and appetizers with my guests. There is actually a great photo that captures this wishing-we-were-donewith-photos moment — my mother is bustling my dress and we were all standing behind a van near the entrance to the tent. A few servers are holding platters for us while we stuff treats into our mouths. So classy! (#4) One thing I would never have changed is the groom seeing his bride coming down the aisle. That is truly special.

Southeast Lighthouse Ballard’s Inn 9.28. 2013 She: 22, human resources analyst, from Darien, Connecticut He: 25, second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, from Greenville, South Carolina Now live in Woodbridge, Virginia How did you meet? At a pub called Grandma’s. Was it love at first sight? No, not at all. At first she was not having any of me but after a while I made enough of an impression on her to get her number and we went on our first date two nights later. How did he propose? Nic woke me up with a large coffee and an everything bagel from Starbucks. When I opened the bagel bag I found a ring box inside — at first I thought I had won a prize from Starbucks. Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? Every summer since I was a child my family drove our 12

6

5

boat up to Block Island for vacation. It was a tradition my grandparents started with my dad and aunt when they were kids Nic joined my family for one of those trips to Block Island. We first said I love you at the Southeast Lighthouse that summer. How did Block Island make your wedding special? Nic: I couldn’t have asked for anything better. The people on the island were extremely welcoming, my family loved it and besides the different accents, thought Block Island had a “southern charm” to it. How many guests did you have: 80 What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Many of them were skeptical as to why we chose a destination wedding, especially since our southern guests had to take cars, planes, taxis, and ferries to get there. But after they saw the island they all said they understood why we chose Block Island, and that it was the most beautiful ceremony they had ever been too. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? All the military touches, like cutting the cake with his

sword. (#1, #6) What was the most unexpected thing that happened at your wedding? The horse that just rode up to our reception surprised us all. We thought that it was for us at first. What was the most popular food item from the reception? All the food was amazing. Ballard’s did a fantastic job. Our favorite was the steak and the lobster. Most of our guests from the south had never had to crack open a lobster before. (#5) What favors did you choose? Beer koozies with our names that also said “To Have and To Hold and To Keep Your Beer Cold”. (#11) Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? Each of my bridesmaids made a sign that we used to decorate our ceremony and reception site. I didn’t see the signs beforehand so it was really special to see how they came out throughout the night. (#4) Will your bridesmaids wear their dresses again? Yes, they have already talked about how they are going to wear them a lot. They got two-birds bridesmaid’s Block Island Weddings

dresses. The straps on the dresses can be tied in over 20 different ways to create a look that is flattering for everyone. Each of them looked absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend those dresses for bridesmaids. (#2) We are still talking about... The kilt I got for Nic. All the guests loved it. (#7) Advice to other couples getting married on the island? I would highly recommend a wedding on Block Island. It is one of the most beautiful, romantic settings in New England. All the vendors are fantastic and because it is such a close knit community many of them have been working together for years doing weddings. They know how to make things flow well together, and how to bring to life your vision for your wedding. Our planning process was almost completely stress free and we were able to fully enjoy our engagement and wedding. Nic: It is a must do. We have zero regrets and if you are worried about the wedding being too expensive, you simply have to do a lot of things yourself like we did to avoid that. Also, it is never too early to start planning. We avoided so much stress by getting the wedding planned nearly a year and a half before it actually happened.

the rehearsal dinner The Spring House did a great job cooking a southern BBQ. Even the southern guests were complimenting the ribs; they were convinced that the Spring House had a southern chef. the ceremony The Southeast Lighthouse was a great place to have an inexpensive ceremony. (#8) the reception Ballards provided all the tables, chairs, linens, and food. They also set up a bonfire on the beach and put up all our DIY decorations throughout the reception site. Jeff Kershaw was always available to answer questions and emails and make sure our wedding went off perfectly. (#10) flowers La Bella Rose provided us with all our flowers for the rehearsal dinner and ceremony. Jamie went above and beyond to make our wedding day perfect. (#10) cake Our cupcake tower by Alicia of Block Island Cakes was terrific. (#6) music My cousin Scott Nickel is a professional DJ and does events all over New England. He played a great mix of music from the cocktail hour through to long after Nic and I left the ceremony so our guests could keep dancing. hair and makeup Koru Ecospa sent two girls to our rental property to do all our hair and makeup. They did an amazing job and having them come to us was a huge help and made for a less stressful day. photographer Michael Benson was our photographer. He brought an assistant, which was a huge help because we had a separate photographer for the groomsmen and the bridesmaids before the wedding.

Spring House 9.7. 2013 She: 30, public relations at Tufts University, from Somers, New York He: 32, assett manager at Eaton Vance, from Brooksville, Maine Now live in Charlestown, Massachusetts How did you meet? A mutual friend introduced us when I moved to Boston from San Francisco. I knew right away he was the one — we were at my friend’s brunch and I kept trying to find reasons to talk to him. Tristan: I noticed her from across the room. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen and I knew I had to find the courage to talk to her. Good thing I did! How did he propose? I proposed to her on Pico Mountain up in Vermont, because it’s a very special place to Katie and her family — she grew up skiing there. It took me all morning to find the right time to pop the question. She is a much better skier than I am a snowboarder so I was having trouble keeping up. All of sudden I realized it 14

was close to lunchtime and I knew there was no way I was going to keep holding the ring in the pocket of my snowboarding pants for the rest of the day. I had to take a dive and fake an injury so she’d stop and come back to me. I got out of my snowboard and got down on one knee. Thankfully she said yes and I didn’t drop the ring in the deep snow! Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? I have been going to Block Island since I was kid (we stay at the Boat Basin) and Tristan has been coming with my family for the last six years. How many guests did you have: 125 What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Perfect location, perfect weather, they can’t wait to get back to Block Island to celebrate. We had our rehearsal dinner Thursday evening so everyone had a chance Friday to rent bikes, grab mudslides at the Oar, explore the island. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding?

11

Not all weddings have a pug that makes a cameo appearance wearing seersucker. (#3, #10) What was the best food you had on the wedding day? Our cake! Roy at Sweet Sophistication is amazing, we had a tiered cake with snickers, peanut butter and chocolate, and spice. It was unbelievable. Tristan: Ray could teach Cake Boss a thing or two. (#14) What was the most popular food at the reception? It wasn’t a food item, but our signature drink, Life is Good (Stoli Razberry vodka, cranberry, sprite). Oh, and the mudslide cookies our friend made. (#6, #9) Tristan: The filet. It was perfect. What did you choose for favors? We adopted our pug Clara Belle from the Pug Rescue of New England about four years ago and she is the absolute best. So we decided to make a donation to the Pug Rescue of New England and Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals. (#3) Tristan: We’re pug people and proud of it! Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? Where to begin? My mom helped me make a custom corn hole set (bean bag toss), my mom made a seersucker flower for our pug Clara Belle to wear, my dad made all of the table numbers, and, for all of the seating cards, I made small seersucker bowties to match the ones Tristan and his groomsmen were wearing. (#2, #3, #5, #7, #11) What was her most bridezilla moment? Pants Dictator — Katie was very concerned that my groomsmen were going to wear their Nantucket red pants over the summer before the wedding, so I had to make it clear to my guys that they were not to wear their pants before the main event. (#5, #16) What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? It’s too hard to pick just one! I think walking out the Spring House doors with my dad by my side and seeing Tristan standing there and all our favorite people surrounding us is about as good as it gets. We were so fortunate to have so many family and friends venture near and far to celebrate with us. (#8) Tristan: Seeing my beautiful bride walk down the aisle. Block Island Weddings

14

What is your favorite photograph from the wedding? I love all of the family photos, the ones with our pug, and all of the group photos with our wedding party around the Adirondeck chairs. (#10, #16) Tristan: I especially like all the photos of us and our pug. (#10) We are still talking about... …how we wish the wedding weekend could have gone on forever. Where was your honeymoon? We’re here now! We went to Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands Advice for couples planning an island wedding? Take a few days so that everyone has a chance to enjoy and explore the island. By spreading out some of the wedding festivities like the rehearsal dinner (Thursday night), welcome cocktails (Friday night), etc. our wedding guests really had a chance to bike and moped around the island, eat great food, and make many, many trips to Yellow Kittens.

Other vendor highlights the rehearsal dinner We had the rehearsal dinner and welcome cocktails at the National and they did a wonderful job. The food and service was great, we loved getting to relax at the fire pit after dinner with the whole wedding party before heading over to the Yellow Kittens. the ceremony and reception The Spring House was everything we could have imagined and more. The location is the best place in the world, the food, drinks and service were outstanding. They truly made it the most perfect day. (#12, #13) flowers Elaine from Weedweavers is amazing, the flowers she did for the wedding were absolutely beyond anything we could have ever imagined. We knew we wanted colorful, slightly wild looking flowers for the wedding and she did everything perfectly. (#4, #7, #14) music/entertainment Wayz and Means is so great, they had people young and old dancing the entire time. (#15) hair and makeup Kristen Moshiek, hair, and Deb Houghton, makeup, were wonderful to work with. (#1) photographer Where to even begin with Susan Sancomb? We got to know her when we did our engagement session with her in Newport the fall before our wedding, she is one of the warmest, kindest, most talented people we know and we consider her a dear friend after getting to know her through the whole wedding process. dog walker June! the best! 15

North Light Upstairs Room at Payne’s Dock 8.1. 2013 She: 33, chemical engineer, from South Africa He: 49, nuclear engineer, from Bellport, New York Now live in Knoxville, Tennessee Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? The island is my husband’s favorite vacation spot where he loves to go spearfishing, so he had a dream of having it on this beautiful island with family and friends. The beautiful setting of the North Light and the rustic beauty of Payne’s Dock made a beautiful background for such a special day. How did Block Island make your wedding special? Our families were able to meet for the first time. My parents came from South Africa, my brother and his family from Australia and my sister and her family from Canada. It was the first time in nine years that my family was able to get together and the first time in seven years my brother and sister saw one another again. It was also the first time that all their children met. So this was a great family reunion. Being on the island gave us some quality time to spend together. We Block Island Weddings

also had friends from South Africa and England join us. Because everyone spent some extra time on the island it gave our friends time to get to know one another and made the wedding so much more special. How many guests did you have: 45 What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? Having friends and family together for a week to celebrate. What were the most popular food items? Our wedding cake baked by my husband’s godchild was the best! The seafood-stuffed sole at the reception and all the appetizers made by the Beachead, which we had on the deck at Payne’s Dock looking over New Harbor was wonderful! Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? Most of the wedding was DIY. But I must say having the wedding at the North Light and having a friend build the arch was spectacular. (#4, #5) What was the most unexpected thing that happened? Everything worked out perfectly!

Saint Andrew Church Avonlea, Jewel of the Sea 6.22. 2013 She: 28, nursing student and mom, from Moosup, Connecticut He: 35, videographer and editor, from East Hartford, Connecticut Now live in Colchester, Connecticut How did you meet? I was the lead singer in a rock cover band. He showed up to take pictures for our posters — we’ve been inseparable ever since! How did he propose? He planned this really special day of going for a hike with the kids (Nathanael, 8, and Seraphina, 2) at Devil’s Hopyard (where we had our first date) and proposing at the summit. Well, it didn’t go exactly as planned. We never made it to the summit. When he got down on one knee, we were all lost in the woods and cranky and my daughter was screaming her head off because she needed a diaper change. It was the most unromantic scenario, but we laugh about it to this day. 18

Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? We wanted so much to have a destination wedding, but a lot of our immediate family and friends couldn’t make a weeklong trip. Block Island definitely fulfilled our dream of having a destination wedding that most people could make. It really is ‘Close to Home, but A World Away.’ How many guests did you have: 65 What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? How absolutely perfect everything was…especially the location. We had our reception on the front lawn of the Avonlea. It was so magical because we had the ocean as our backdrop for our dance and the sunset behind us for our cake cutting. Everyone had direct access to the beach and the kids went swimming during the reception. (#1, #2, #3, #4, #9) Patrick: They said everything was perfect and beautiful and one of the best weddings they had ever been to. The beauty of the church’s interior had many in awe, from the stained glass to the beautiful woodwork. (#5, #6) Everyone loved the Avonlea as the location for the reception and said it was the perfect amount of party and relaxation.

8

What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? The fact that it was a mini vacation for everyone that came. B.I. is so beautiful and a lot of the first timers are already planning their next trip back. Patrick: It was just a very light atmosphere all around and everyone felt relaxed and had a great time. Plus we had a huge bonfire on the beach afterward. (#7) What was the most popular food at the reception? Lobster mac and cheese, sliders, and bacon-wrapped scallops. Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? Our wedding music video! Patrick: I’m a video editor/videographer and I asked a few friends if they wouldn’t mind shooting video, because we were planning on making a wedding music video. Four of my friends gave their time to shoot and make our wedding day unforgettable. See it at http:// youtu.be/a-XZaqyWx8w What was the most unexpected thing that happened? allergic reaction. About a half hour later her face blew up like a blow fish and she looked like Fergie with fresh collagen injections. So we rushed to the Medical Center, and after she took some Benadryl everything was fine, but I thought for a split second there that something horrible was going to happen. (#9) Morgan: I forgot I was allergic to lemon zest and had a severe allergic reaction to the wedding cake. The whole time I was in the Medical Center I was texting guests to grab the cooler and s’mores and head down to the bonfire. I was not ready to stop partying. I ended up making it to the bonfire after all. My mishap was the talk of the town the next day! What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Saying our vows. It felt like we were the only two people in that whole church. (#6) Patrick: All of it! It was the most amazing day. I think standing on the altar and kissing my wife or having her sing the groom and mother dance. (#10) What is your favorite photograph from the wedding? We had so many different backdrops between the moped, the breakers, the ocean, the lighthouse, the Block Island Weddings

sunset. Stacey did an amazing job! I think one of my favorites is the one of my daughter and me. It’s such a special photo. I want her to look at it when she’s older and think I was at Mommy and Daddy’s wedding. (# 11, #12, #13, #14) Patrick: My favorite is the picture that was taken of us on the breakwater with the Avonlea in the background. We used it as the DVD label for our music video. (#15) Where was your honeymoon? We stayed in a canalfront beach house on Ocracoke Island in The Outer Banks, North Carolina. Any advice for other couples getting married on the island? Book your cars in advance! We didn’t realize that reservations needed to be made and ended up having to bring five cars full of wedding stuff and musician’s equipment a day early. Any other highlights you’d like to mention? After the ceremony, we walked around town to take pictures, everyone was applauding us and when we walked past the National, everyone on the porch gave us a standing ovation. We felt like celebrities! (#16, #17)

Now live in Boston How did you meet? At a beach party during the last week of college at Fairfield University. How did he propose? He took me to the Mohegan Bluffs, where we walked down what seemed like hundreds of steps to this beautiful beach. We walked along the beach a bit, and then we stopped to take a picture. That’s when he got down on one knee. He secretly got the whole thing on tape! How did Block Island make your wedding special? Block Island is our special place. As soon as you step off the ferry, it’s like you’ve stepped back a hundred years. It’s very old world, relaxed, beautiful, romantic and home to some of the nicest people on earth. We’ll go 20

What was the most popular food at the reception? Definitely the late night pizza and snacks the Spring House put out. By 10 p.m. everyone was ready for some comfort food. What did you choose for favors and why? One of my favorite favors was the one my mom put together for the kids. She wrapped some crayons and candy together with blank cards they could make for us. We had so much fun reading all of their homemade cards. What was the most unique thing about your wedding? I’d have to say my dress. I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted so I went to see Maria at Sabella Couture in Boston. I told her my vision, she sketched it out and after six months, and several visits, she created my dream dress. The whole process was so much fun and wearing that dress was just amazing! (#1, #2)

What was the most unexpected thing that happened After we were announced as man and wife Ryan picked me up, huge dress and all, and carried me down the aisle and outside the church. (#3) Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? The entire wedding was one huge DIY touch orchestrated by Kelly. I loved the old style chest and messages in a bottle Kelly thought of for the place cards. (#9) Also, my dad made custom wooden painted signs that were placed throughout the Spring House property. They were a big hit. (#4, #5) Favorite photos? I love the ones of Ryan carrying me down the aisle (#3) and the photos of the bridal party we took around the island — the mix of the different colors and textures of the dresses and the flowers against the picturesque island scenery was stunning.(#10) But my absolute favorite picture is one of Ryan lifting me in the air on the boardwalk at Dinghy Beach. So romantic. (#7) Most beautiful memory? One moment I’ll never forget is right after we came back from taking pictures around the island with the bridal party. We walked onto the lawn of the Spring House. The sun had started to set over the ocean but it was still warm up on the hill. Cocktail hour had just Block Island Weddings

started, hors d’oeuvres were being served, champagne being passed, the piano player was singing Frank Sinatra as guests mingled up on the grand Spring House porch. It felt so old-world, like a scene from “The Great Gatsby,” but starring all of my favorite people. I just stood there, soaking it all in — one of the most magical moments of my life. Any other highlights? My groomsmen painted the famous “painted rock” for us. One of the best men brought all the supplies and even matched the colors to our wedding. We all took pictures with it after the ceremony. (#6, #8) We also got a private tour of the animal farm with our friends and family. This is one of our favorite parts of the island and we were so thankful to Justin and Rita for allowing us to share it with our loved ones. Also, our amazing videographers from Promessa Films surprised us with a same-day edit which they displayed after the dinner in the Victorian Room. Any advice for other couples getting married on the island? Use local vendors and resources as much as you can. Many of our vendors were local and they knew the island and I knew I could put my total faith in them. Remember to step back for a moment and take it all in!

Charlestown Beach The Manisses 10.11.2013 She: 28, hairdresser, from Enfield, Connecticut He: 29, lineman for Connecticut Light and Power, from Enfield, Connecticut Now live in Enfield, Connecticut How did you meet? We met in high school! He is my high school best friend’s older brother. We always had crushes on each other, but didn’t start dating until 12 years after we met. Joshua: She is my sister’s best friend, and over time became mine as well. How did you propose? I didn’t propose really. Our conversation of “what if ” turned into running off and getting married. Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? We both wanted to get married on the beach at sunset and Block Island has such beautiful, quiet beaches. It was the perfect place. How many guests did you have: Zero. Just me, Josh, the photographer and the justice of the peace. (#1) Joshua: When we talked about getting married, we Block Island Weddings

talked about doing it for ourselves, for our love. Many weddings wind up turning into an event to please everyone else and the day is over before you really enjoy your wedding. We wanted nothing more than to be on a beautiful beach by ourselves and with all our love in our hearts. (#3) What was the best food at the reception? The entire dinner at the Manisses was delicious. Josh and I are both gluten-free and they had lots of options. Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? Josh and I put together my bouquet the morning of the wedding. It was exactly as I’d always imagined, just pale pink and white English roses wrapped in burlap — simple and pretty. What was the most unexpected thing that happened? I forgot my bag with all my toiletries at home two hours and a ferry ride away! In a panic I called my mother, who proceeded to call places on the island to help me. I ended up at Clayhead Salon and thank God Michael Aaron was able to help me. I had my blowdryer and curling and flatiron and I was able to buy a brush and hairspray. And Michael squeezed me in for a makeup application that was beautiful. Joshua: My wife, a hairstylist, left everything she needed to get ready at the top of the stairs at home!

What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? The memory I love most is walking out onto the beach and seeing Josh smiling at me. (#2) Joshua: My wife and I met on the beach with me heading down first. When I got in the car there was a card for me that made my heart melt and at the end it said to hit “play” on the CD player. On came our song, “A Kiss to Build a Dream On,” by Louis Armstrong. What is your favorite photograph from the wedding? They are all my favorites. I can’t decide which ones to frame. At this point, I’m ready to frame them all. We are still talking about the… …pictures! They are amazing. Lesley did such an amazing job. We used a few on our Christmas card: Married and Merry. Would you have changed anything? Not a thing. Joshua: I wouldn’t change a thing. If ever there was a perfect wedding, it was mine. Any advice for other couples getting married on the island? Just enjoy every minute of it. You are in such a beautiful, romantic place so don’t sweat the small stuff — in the end it doesn’t matter much. 23

At a party during our last semester of college. I hit on him relentlessly. I went home that night and told my roommate that I was going to marry Charlie Harding. I’m paraphrasing because my grandparents are going to read this. How did he propose? He proposed at home. He woke me up to ask me, and I was pretty out of it, so instead of saying “yes” I said: “Whaaaat? Are you serious?” Like a Jane Austen heroine. Charlie: We had gone to Hawaii a few weeks before 24

and I thought about proposing there. But, ultimately, it’s kind of a trap to propose to someone on a remote island. It would have been an uncomfortable plane ride back if she said no. Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? Block Island has always been a special place for us. As part of my plan to ensnare and marry Charlie, I took him to my family’s house on Block Island while we were dating. When we got engaged, we knew we’d get married here. How many guests did you have: 150 What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They were grateful to share our special day with us — and for the open bar. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding?

We snuck “Goat Sacrifice” into our wedding program to scare our relatives. When the time came, my husband announced, “The goat couldn’t make it, so let’s move on.” What was the most popular food? Charlie:The sea bass. We put “local” on our RSVP card, so that sold it. I’m pretty sure it was local. Everything at the Atlantic Inn is delicious. When we first started coming to the island together years ago, we’d have mussels on the porch at sunset. Some of the best food on the island. What did you choose for favors? Personalized jars of Littlefield Farms honey, honey mustard, and cinnamon honey. The best honey in the world! Charlie: We wanted to share something from the island with our guests and support a local business. What was the most unexpected thing that happened? Do people answer that question? What is your favorite wedding day photo? There is a photograph of us laughing hysterically at my little brother’s toast. And one of us being lifted in the air on two chairs during the Horah. We look terrified and ecstatic, which is probably a decent metaphor for the whole day. (#9, #11) Charlie: The one of us laughing. Bess and I are in a bluegrass band with a few of our friends, and they played us down the aisle. Any advice for other couples getting married on the island? Don’t look at the weather forecast. Ever. My mother always says: “This is a rock in the middle of the ocean. No weather lasts longer than an hour.” She’s right. Charlie: Tell your guests to take Dramamine before the ferry. Nobody wants a barfing flower girl.

everything. The sun was just setting when I finally got the words out.

She: 29, 2nd grade teacher, from Norwalk, Connecticut He: 30, design engineer, from Upper Hutt, New Zealand

Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? My family has been sailing to Block Island every summer for as long as I can remember and sharing the island with everyone we loved was all I could have ever asked for.

Now live in Norwalk, Connecticut How did you meet? Chad and I were both living and working in London. I was looking to move into a new apartment and answered an ad by a group of housemates looking for a person to move into a vacant room. Chad was one of the housemates! Chad: When we voted on who we should have move in, I really pushed for Terri because I thought she was gorgeous. How did he propose? I had always talked about wanting to go to Block Island during the off season. Chad booked ferry tickets and a room at the 1661 Inn in early November 2012. We had a picnic and he proposed on Mansion Beach at sunset. We were the only ones on the beach. Chad: I had a huge plan of what I was going to say but when it came time to propose I completely forgot 26

How did Block Island make your wedding special? Chad: The friendly nature of everyone on the island made our wedding as perfect as it was. Jim and all the staff at the Narragansett went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Jim even ran around the day of the wedding helping secure a sign for our exit (we went around the Great Salt Pond in a dinghy). The meet and greet we had at Mahogany Shoals (in lieu of a rehearsal dinner) was also really special. Kimberly from the Beachead did an amazing job with the food. It gave everyone a chance to get to know each other before the wedding. Also, having everything within walking distance on the island made the whole weekend fun and easy. How many guests did you have: About 100

What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Honestly many people told us it was the best wedding they’d ever been to! They loved the laid back atmosphere of the island and how the wedding was a whole weekend event. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? Having all of our friends from New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S. come together and take over the island. It was so cool to see people hanging out together and having a blast. What was the most popular food item from the reception? The pistachio crusted cod, the lamb chops, and Alan’s coconut shrimp. What did you choose for favors? We bought glass photo coasters that came in sets of 4 and put a picture of our 4 favorite places in them; Wellington, N.Z., London, U.K., Cinque Terra in Italy, and the Narragansett Inn on Block Island. We wanted to share our favorite places with all of our favorite people. (#6) Block Island Weddings

Chad: If possible make it a whole weekend event so you and your guests have time to really appreciate the island.

Sullivan House 8.19.2013 She: 47, logistician in New York Air National Guard, from Zanesville, Ohio He: 40, navigator in New York Air National Guard, from Dorset, Vermont Now live in New York and Vermont — working on merging How did you meet? At work. How did he propose? We were having dinner on the deck of his home in Vermont. He said he forgot something in the kitchen. When he came back he got down on one knee and asked. It was very sweet…he was so nervous. Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? When we first started dating he told me that his mom and stepfather had a summer home there and his grandfather was born there and lives there year round, but I had never been there. We went out so I could meet them and see the island. I fell in love with the place. The Sullivan House tent was one of the first things I had seen from the ferry, I thought how cool would it be to be married there! How many guests did you have: 48 Block Island Weddings

What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Most had never been out before and they are planning to come back next summer. What was the most popular food at the reception? The swordfish. Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? I made welcome bags for all the guests with beach mats, snacks for the beach, Vermont maple syrup, Vermont soap, a welcome packet about Block Island with maps and info, bottled water, mints and a hangover kit (lemon vodka, tomato juice, ibuprofen, Tylenol and Alka-Seltzer) just in case it was needed. Everyone loved them. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Walking out of the Sullivan House and down the hill to my future husband. I don’t know if I have ever been so excited and happy. Seth: Saying my vows to my beautiful wife while overlooking the harbor. Would you have changed anything? I wouldn’t have done quite as much of the decorating myself… whew…stressful but…it was beautiful and worth it in the end! (#1, #3. #8) Seth: I would change nothing. It was all perfect.

8

Any other highlights you’d like to mention? There were only four kids at the wedding and they had their own table. Very fun, — candy, fake teeth, funny glasses — everyone wanted to sit there. (#2)

Other Vendor Highlights:

the rehearsal dinner The rehearsal dinner was at my future in-laws home. It was awesome, everyone that was going to be at the wedding attended so there were no “strangers” at the wedding the next day. It was catered by Linda Spak who made a huge paella. the venue The Sullivan House was gorgeous, perfect. (#5, #6, #7) cake fabulous “Cup-cake” wedding cake by Kate Musso of Sugar Rush (#4) flowers Me, my sisters, and friends! (#8) music Marc Scortino photographer Rose Schaller was awesome. transportation We hired taxis for the rehersal dinner and the wedding so everyone could truly enjoy themselves.

Saint Andrew Church The Cushman House 6.15.2013 She: director of curriculum at a charter school network, from New Canaan, Connecticut. He: PhD student at Colorado State, from Okemos, Michigan. Now live in Denver, Colorado. How did you meet? We met on Block Island. I’ve been coming to the island my whole life and one summer Scott came out to teach sailing at the Block Island Club. A mutual friend brought him to my 20th birthday party. How did he propose? I was on the island with my family and Scott was 32

supposed to be coming out a few days later. He schemed with my family, who sent me to the Club to get something and when I got there Scott was lying in one of the little sailboats. He jumped out and surprised me and we went out on the boat. It was a little scary because it was windy and raining and he was nervous that the ring was going to fall overboard. He kept saying, “Put the ring on!” Why did you choose B.I. for your wedding? I think it was something we knew from the moment we got engaged — without Block Island we never would have met. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? It was the most personal and fun wedding they’d ever been to.

What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? All the music. So many musicians! My dad’s band played — Otis and the Hurricanes, they play Blues on the Block. (#1) He’s been playing with bands on the island since the seventies, starting I think with Coyote. My sister and cousins sang to me, which was a great surprise. They sang “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers. (#2) Bobby Harden sang to us. And my uncles sang too! What was the most popular food? Our cake! It was vanilla with strawberry and mascarpone with vanilla buttercream frosting from Sweetcakes in Peacedale, R.I. It was so great. And everyone loved the swordfish that B.I. Gourmet did, too. What did you choose for favors? We did a donation to Boston Children’s Hospital. We Block Island Weddings

wanted to do something meaningful, because we felt so fortunate to have the wedding we did. Any DIY touches you’re particularly proud of? Almost all the flowers came from my mom’s garden. She even refrigerated the peonies to stall the blooms. We brought them all to Mary Anderson, who was our florist. My mom and sister made all the signs, and my cousins made the corn hole games. (#3, #4, #5) What was the most unexpected thing that happened? That it was beautiful, still and sunny on our wedding day considering that we had 70-mile-per-hour winds the day before. Our three-tier cake became a two-tier when it fell over on the boat! But everything turned out beautifully.

Block Island Weddings

What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Walking down the aisle with my dad. And our first dance, “Tupelo Honey,” which Otis and the Hurricanes learned for us. What is your favorite wedding day photo? Too many! All the ones at the Block Island Club (#10, #11) and at the Southeast Lighthouse (#8, #9). Any other highlights The lanterns we launched into the night (#6, #7) Any advice for other couples getting married on the island? Keep it simple! I didn’t do that, but that’s what I’d say.
