The Block Island Times was founded in 1970 by Dan Rattiner, publisher, and Margaret Cabell Self, editor. It published only summer editions until 1982, when, under the ownership of Shirley and Peter Wood, the Times became Block Island’s first year-round newspaper. In 1988 the Times began weekly publication and became the Island’s “paper of record.” Sold off-island in 1997, the paper returned home in November 1999, and was reinvigorated under the ownership of Peggy and Bruce Montgomery. In 2006, ownership of the paper transferred to Fraser and Betty Lang. Ten years later, in 2016, The Block Island Times was purchased by current publisher Michael Schroeder. HOW TO START A

By Renée Meyer Gardening can be one of those traps akin to weight-loss resolutions made in the deepest dark of December: dream too big and you will never even begin. One’s first garden shouldn’t be a goal; it should be an experiment, the purpose of which should simply be to determine if you like to do it. The test should start small. in the form of a little island bed. It needn’t require much of an investment, and it probably won’t take much time to determine if you like to play in the dirt — or not. Whatever the result, with this method, the damage to your lawn will be minimal if you decide that gardening isn’t for you. At the very least, for all your efforts you may have a tree or shrub that you can take pride in having planted. The rest can revert back to grass. If you fall in love with your little island bed, you can always expand it at a later date, or add other islands in your lawn. Starting a garden can seem a daunting thing, especially to those who may be transplanted urbanites and suburbanites who have simply never experienced gardening before. And, too, is the feeling that one must do a whole lot of things before even setting in the first plants. One of the oft suggested first steps is having one’s soil evaluated in a lab, determining its pH for one thing, and then amending the soil until that pH arrives at some supposedly perfect number, by adding a little of this, a

little of that, and a whole lot of expensive stuff. Guess what? Here in New England, and especially on Block Island, we have acidic soil. Live with it. Skip the tests. Plant things that like acidic soil. (Hint: conifers, blueberries, native plants.) To start a garden — not a vegetable one, that’s a bit more complicated — I’m talking about an island in your lawn, digging up some grass and creating a bed in the shape of your choice. It should be small — maybe a circular bed six feet across, or elongated to perhaps eight feet and four to five feet wide, tapering to the ends. Consider curving it into a kidney shape. Play around with a garden hose or rope to come up with a shape that complements the contours of your yard and home. What you will need As for tools, you really can get away with only three things: a garden shovel, a trowel and one of those cultivating things that looks like a claw with a handle. If you have access to a grub-axe, it can be helpful. A grub-axe, which looks like a pick-axe with one of the blades flattened and widened, allows you to cut under the sod in neat squares (you can move them to shore up bare or eroded areas) but like swinging a pick-axe, or a regular wood-chopping axe, it can be, well, back-breaking. It’s not for the faint of heart. Once you have arrived at a shape, take that shovel or grub-axe and dig up the sod.

Try to go deep enough to catch the roots. If the soil underneath the grass looks nice, shake the roots so the dirt falls back in the bed. If roots remain in the soil, try to get rid of as many as possible. Once all the sod is removed, you are ready for the next step: evaluate your soil yourself. If it turns out to look like rich, dark topsoil, you have hit the jackpot. Here on Block Island though, chances are your soil will be sandy and gravelly, with lots of small rocks, or it will be quite the opposite — full of heavy clay. These need to be amended somewhat, and you can use many things. Peat moss is the easiest and probably the least expensive to obtain, unless you have homemade compost (and chances are you don’t if this is your first garden) or are willing to go out into a field and collect aged cow patties. Never use fresh manure. Spread some of the peat moss/compost/ manure over your bed and work it in with the cultivator. Use your judgment as to how much to add. If you want to plant things that require “rich” soil, you may need to add a lot. On the other hand, plants such as herbs may not require too much. And bear in mind that you can build up your soil over the years by using simple gardening techniques. Now it’s time to plant something. If you didn’t have any particular design in mind, think of the way the American shopping mall is typically designed as a long space with three “anchor stores” — large showy

department stores. In this case, consider making your anchors shrubs, or two shrubs and one tree. Start with small ones that will protect each other somewhat from the wind. Place perennials a few feet from these small shrubs, so the shrubs have room to grow. In the early years you can fill in with annual flowers as you wish. They won’t be needed when those shrubs mature. Selecting your plants When you select your plants, be sure to read the labels. Choose ones that are best suited for your soil type and sun/shade situation. Native plants can be far the easiest to grow, as they are already suited for our climate and soil types. Plus, native plants often provide food and shelter for the wildlife in the area. Once you have planted, spread mulch, such as wood chips (you can get these for free from the town — there’s usually a pile in the back of the cemetery), or shredded bark from a garden center or nursery. Spread this about three inches thick. It will help with water retention and prevent the topsoil from blowing away. It does break down over time, but that process improves the quality of the soil. Make sure to water your plants regularly for the first six weeks or so until they become established. After that, water only if it doesn’t rain at least once a week. Most importantly, have fun.

The northeast wildflower mix from www. Wildflowermix.com, an “informational website” for www.seedland.com has some twenty varieties of flowers. Eleven of those are native to other continents. Unlike some seed purveyors, at least they list the contents in Latin, so you can look them up. A trap that’s particularly pernicious when it comes to purchasing seeds is whether or not those seeds are “treated.” If they are, it is most likely with the class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids. These insecticides will spread throughout the plant, including its nectar and pollen. Since the chemicals affect the central nervous systems of the insects that visit those plants, even causing paralysis and death, you are most likely doing more harm than good by planting them. You can’t always tell if the seeds you are buying are treated, however with growing awareness of the problems associated with neonicotinoids, savvy seed purveyors will usually tell you that their seeds are not treated. (As an aside, many of the annuals and perennials we love to scoop at nurseries may also have been grown from seeds treated with neonicotinoids, and it is almost impossible to tell which ones are, and which ones aren’t. Buyer beware!)

But there is good news: Seedland also sells packets of native regional wildflowers – and native is the key word here, because native plants are the ones that will both thrive and help out the native birds, butterflies, and wild bees. Still, you might not want to purchase a mix. This particular one includes some varieties that are already quite common in our Block Island environment, such as asters and goldenrod. Fortunately, all of the varieties may also be purchased individually, and this may be a better way simply because not all seeds require the same conditions, or methods, for successful propagation. Rhody Native Rhody Native, a program in conjunction with the R.I. Natural History Survey (RINHS.org) and the University of Rhode Island has a R.I. native vascular plant database that can be downloaded – if you can find it. It seems to require a lot of clicking in various places, but it is there… somewhere. Rhody Native seeks to source truly native seeds and to grow them out for local distribution. But, they are a small organization and the number of plants they can grow is limited. There are a few local nurseries that carry their plants, but they do not generally sell directly to the general public.

By Renée Meyer A few weeks ago the news was that Cheerios was giving away packets of wildflower seeds to help save the bees. It seemed like a good idea, but slightly later stories surfaced excoriating Cheerios for the inclusion of wildflower seeds that could become invasive in certain parts of the country. The main culprits were forget-me-nots, for being invasive in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and California poppies that can become invasive in the southeastern states. Planting wildflowers is not a bad thing, but there are some traps to watch out for. The United States is a vast place, and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits -all mixture of wildflower seeds if one’s goal is really to help the local pollinators. California poppies are native to California. They are a beautiful flower – one of my favorites, actually, and I do have a flower bed where they thrive year after year. Fortunately these self-sowing flowers do not seem to want to jump from one bed to another or I might be in trouble. Some seed companies offer wildflower mixes that are more tailored for a particular region. The sorry translation is that this means the seeds will do well in your region, not that they are native to your region. A wildflower mix for the northeast region from www.Americanmeadows.com still contains the California poppy. Other seeds in Cheerios’ mix were criticized for not being from the United States at all, and this is also a common problem with “wildflower mixes.”

RIWPS Sales Fortunately there is the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society. Their website has a lot of information including a link (under the Resources tab) to that all too obscure vascular plant database. Volunteers for the Society propagate wild plants and sell them at two sales per year. Both take place at the University of Rhode Island’s East Farm on Route 108. (Just before the junction with Route 138.) The first one is on Saturday, May 6. This is the annual Early Native Plant Sale: Spring Ephemerals and Early Bloomers. What’s a “spring ephemeral?” These are flowers that emerge and bloom in early spring and then after a short while retreat back underground. They are often woodland plants that take advantage of the sun before the leaves fully emerge on deciduous trees and leave them in shade. The second - and larger sale is called The Best Native Plant Sale in Rhode Island, and takes place on Saturday, June 3. Both sales are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a great source for native trees and shrubs, as well as flowers, and the prices are more than fair. Be sure to take advantage of the many knowledgeable salespeople and ask questions, especially as to the proper growing conditions for your plant.

The Glass Float Project continues The Glass Float Project will be back! The first 2017 floats will drop in early June but there are still 2016 floats out there to be found — a few were spotted recently! About the Glass Float Project Eben Horton creates "one of a kind" pieces on an individual basis out of his studio that he calls ‘The Glass Station’— a converted 1920’s gas station — located in downtown Wakefield, R.I. This project is funded by the Block Island Tourism Council and a Kickstarter funding campaign. 550 Glass Floats (glass orbs about the size of a grapefruit) will be hidden on Block Island. Floats will be dated, numbered, and stamped with the shape of Block Island. All floats are clear glass except for 17 (because it is 2017), which

are special colored orbs. One super special float is covered entirely in gold leaf. The hunt continues indefinitely....it only ends when all the floats have been found! Floats will be hidden on the beaches and on the Greenway Trails. They will be above the high tide mark but never in the dunes or up the side of the bluffs. They will be within one foot of either side of any Greenway trail they are placed on. This is "finder's keepers" but you are asked to only keep one per seeker, please. By Shannon McCabe Seaweed has long been considered a precious garden amendment. For centuries, coastal farmers have headed to the beach in oxen driven carts to haul loads of the mineral-rich fertilizer from the generous sea to their awaiting garden plots. This annual fall practice was a serious business in coastal areas before the advent of industrialized large scale farming and chemical fertilizers. Farmers in the 1800s could purchase “rights” to certain areas where the seaweed collecting was particularly choice. Seaweed is still considered a valuable garden amendment or mulch, and if you happen to have access to a beach, lake or

pond with seaweed, consider collecting some for your garden. Seaweed is a large algae that grows in marine environments. This means that not all seaweed comes from the sea, you can also collect seaweed from the shoreline along ponds and lakes. Unless you have unusually high sodium levels in your garden, which is unlikely, seaweed does not need to be rinsed off to leach out the salt before adding it to the garden. If you are worried about excess salt, you can rinse it off with fresh water from a garden hose before applying. When harvesting, be sure to check with town ordinances to ensure that it is legal to collect seaweed in that area. As a rule of thumb do not harvest

more than one third of the seaweed in any one patch, as seaweed washed up on the beach does serve a purpose in the beach environment, as erosion control and food for critters. There are several options for how to use seaweed in the garden once collected. Add it to the compost pile to aerate and add nutrients as well as speed the composting process. You can work seaweed directly into the soil in the fall as an amendment. When incorporated it will help to improve a hard packed soil structure by improving aeration and making soil more loose and fluffy. Seaweed also contains beneficial trace minerals that are beneficial to plants as well as micro nutrients that do not need

to be broken down for the plants to take up. You can also use seaweed as a mulch. This will help to suppress weeds as well as retain moisture, help to protect from temperature swings, which stress plants, and it’s a fantastic slug repellent (sharp and slightly salty). Mulch around plants four to six inches thick and consider reapplying when the seaweed naturally shrinks down. Seaweed can be considered superior to some other mulch choices as it shares no diseases with land plants and also does not contain weed seeds. So head on down to the beach with your oxcart or pickup truck and get yourself a load of the good stuff!

At long last— the time of year to start planning your outside garden and landscaping projects! Heather and Turtle Hatfield, along with sons Chase and Blaze, are excited going into their fifth year at Goose & Garden. Whether your projects are big or small, Goose & Garden is a great place to get what you need here on the island. You can get mulch, topsoil, potting soil, fertilizer, manure, and peat moss, and there is a large selection of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. You can get a jump-start on the spring veggies in the greenhouse now — lettuces and kale, a huge variety of tomato plants and herbs, along with pansies and petunias. Along with a selection of hanging baskets, they also have containers for potted plants. Heather suggests that people can

bring their own containers or window boxes to have made up with whatever you want. Japanese beetle traps, deer repellent spray, a variety of rakes and small gardening tools, as well as a selection of seeds from the Hudson Valley Seed Library are available, as well. If there is something you want that you don’t see, just ask Heather; she can order it for you. Riesling Peach-Glazed Ham

Riesling-Peach Glazed Ham is a great entree, especially for Easter brunch or dinner. It tastes excellent, and is perfect for a big family gathering. The flavors are amazing and everyone will enjoy this yummy ham!

Riesling Peach-Glazed Ham Ingredients 1 fully cooked smoked bone-in half ham (6-8 lb) 1 cup Riesling wine 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 shallot, finely chopped

1 18 oz jar peach preserves 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup stone-ground mustard

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Line a shallow roasting pan with foil 3. Place ham on the rack in roasting pan 4. Put ovenproof meat thermometer in ham so tip is in center of thickest part of meat and does not touch bone 5. In a 1 quart saucepan, heat wine, thyme sprigs, and shallot to boiling over medium-high heat 6. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered until the wine is reduced to 1/2 cup 7. Remove from heat and discard thyme sprigs 8. Stir in peach preserves, brown sugar, and mustard 9. Brush half of glaze mixture over ham 10. Bake uncovered 1 hour 30 minutes, basting with remaining glaze mixture every 30 minutes 11. Cover loosely with foil 12. Bake 30 minutes longer or until thermometer reads at least 140 degrees 13. Let stand 15 minutes before slicing and serving

Driveway Clear A little prevention can go a long way By K. Curtis Is your driveway wide enough for an ambulance? Is your driveway clearance high enough for a fire truck? An ambulance or a fire truck is wider, longer, and taller than a personal vehicle. What about an oil or propane delivery truck? These vehicles are larger and bulkier as well — but still need to access your home — especially in the winter months. It is in your own best interest to have adequate fuel delivery and emergency vehicle access to your property. Fire and emergency vehicles carry equipment on the sides and tops of the trucks, and so do the utility delivery trucks. Tree limbs hanging over and into driveways can damage the vehicles and equipment that we depend on in emergencies. Inadequate access could result in no watering down of structures or surround-

ing areas if there was a fire, or no oil or gas to keep your house from freezing up. Make sure you maintain driveway width and overhead height clearance — even if it is shared with neighbors — for the BIVFD and Rescue vehicles. It is suggested that your driveway be cleared no less than four (4) feet horizontally from both sides of the roadway or driveway and no less than fourteen (14) feet vertically from the road level. Clear away branches or other items that could impede emergency vehicles from accessing your property. A clearly visible address sign is also important — make sure your fire number is visible and clear of brush and long grass. Seconds count during an emergency. A little prevention can go a long way. Protect you, your family and your property by allowing emergency responders and others to effectively do their jobs.

Homegrown Flowers and Foliage Hydrangea

By Heather Russo Enjoyed since 2,500 BC in Egypt, it is an ancient understanding that bringing flowers and plants into our homes can have a mentally and physically salubrious effect. A homegrown bouquet is assuredly a most enchanting gift that can be fashioned in a rush when you have all the ingredients right outside your door. Flowers exude sexy symbolism through color, form, texture and scent and some you can even taste! Gardens grown specifically for floriculture are generally brimming with cut-and-come-again annual varieties such as romantic dahlias, brilliant zinnias and fragrant sweet peas; but there are an abundance of zone hardy perennial plants, woody shrubs, and even trees that lend themselves to floral design and can

be grown on Block Island. Fruit, seed pods and stems mingle with flowers and foliage to enrich an arrangement with natural essence. Many options to choose from It is no surprise that the first flower worth mentioning is the gossamer peony, a blossom that can stand alone. There are many species in the genus Paeonia, including the woodland obovata (creamy white) and japonica (rose) These plants are smaller in stature than a typical peony and prefer a dappled shady site. Their flowers are single in form, meaning there is only one "ruff" of petals on each bloom, as opposed to the larger semi-double, double, and bomb double types. The seed pods are stars that burst open exposing brilliant red flesh, pillowing inky blue berries.

Woodland peony flowers are delightful and fleeting, but they are worth growing for these showy pods alone. Next to bloom are the majestic tree peonies, woody flowering shrubs that can reach five to six feet tall and wide with huge blossoms in hues ranging from dark velvet purple to crimson, blush, cream, and more. These suffruticosa species will also flourish best when planted in a protected place away from full afternoon sun and gusty winds. Herbaceous peonies come in a variety of shapes, colors, sizes, and bloom times. This most popular type is truly the sweetheart of the flower world and can live long enough to receive heirloom status. Well loved, it's not unusual to see peony plants passed down through generations of fam-

ily gardens. It is a little known fact that the petals are edible too! Intersectional, or Itoh peonies are a cross between the tree and herbaceous peony. This marriage results in more compact growth on stronger stems, higher disease resistance and an opulent color palette of golds, coppers, and rubies. Deer stay away from peonies also, making it hard to refuse them a home in your garden. Local variety Melissa Sitbon Philip, floral designer and owner of the shop My Oyster, is partial to peonies as well as hydrangea, astilbe, iris, black-eyed susan, echinacea and lilies, which are plentiful in most gardens on Block Island. When it comes to hydrangea, paniculata cultivars like 'Limelight', 'Little Lime', 'Pinky Winky' and 'Strawberry Sundae' and arborescens varieties such as 'Invincibelle' and 'Invincibelle Spirit' are nice companions to the ever popular blue macrophyllas. Melissa says, "On the wild side of things, I love to use honeysuckle vine, Queen Anne's lace, beach roses and privet for its fresh smell and feathery flower and berries in the fall. The way of traditional arrangements is falling away, making room for a more whimsical, natural look with lots of greenery" Physocarpus also known as ninebark, is a drought tolerant native shrub with cultivars that exhibit handsome, glossy leaves in shades of deep bronze wine that are popular in the floral trade. Corymbs of tight pink buds open into small pale pink to white flowers. Ninebark prefers an open spot with good air circulation. Easy to grow. Philadelphus is a large deer resistant deciduous shrub with redolent blooms that emanate a heady perfume similar to that of an orange blossom, hence the common name 'mock orange'. The white flowers can be single or double, depending on the variety and 'Aureus' is a cultivar boasting lemony chartreuse, foliage that glows in the landscape. Heptacodium miconioides or seven sons flower can be grown as a large multi -stemmed shrub or a standard tree reaching 10 to 15 feet tall. The late, small white flower clusters are sweetly scented and attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. These flowers give way to blazing, coral red calyxes that add a fiery smolder to a fall arrangement. Pieris japonica is a rather common evergreen shrub found in many a shady border, but the spring flowers are pristine drooping white bells much appreciated by Laura Seita, owner of Fig & Squill Floral Design in Exeter, RI. She says, "I really wish more brides would choose April so they could enjoy these beautiful flowers." Recently featured on “The Rhode Show” for her talents, Laura has a period home and garden to be proud of and has taught floral design at Rhode Island School of Design. She loves lilac not only for it's signature scented violet cones but simply for it's lovely heart-shaped leaves, and favors the broadleaf evergreen Euonymus for it's year round appeal. There's an infinite amount of perennial plants that perform as cut flowers but I will mention a few favorites: Early blooming hellebores prefer a semi shady site and are deer-proof. The sturdy single or ruffled blooms come in an array of jewel tones including jade, and are sometimes spotted with tiny scarlet flecks. Asclepias is a host plant for the Monarch butterfly. The tiny flower bundles of the cultivar 'Milkmaid' are a virtuous creamy white and last a long time. Deer resistant crocosmia or montbretia is grown from small bulb type corms. 'Lucifer' is a particularly hardy variety with elegant arching stems of vermillion tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds. The seed pods that follow also have visual interest. Delphiniums stately spires come in shades of blues and lavenders that mimic a watercolor painting. Known as "temperennials" that may or may not return in years to come, their beauty is worth the risk. They prefer a protected spot in the garden and a bit of light winter mulch. 'New Millenium' hybrids and 'Pagan Purple' have noteworthy hardiness. The grandiflora species is smaller in stature and wispy in nature but more apt to grow back at least for a few additional seasons, and the native exaltatum is a little coarser in appearance compared to it's flouncy cousins, but will perennialize without a doubt and often spread. Lady's Mantle creates a frothy edging in a semi-shady garden or sun, if the soil stays cool. The round leaves are a fuzzy cool celery-green and mimic a fancy Victorian collar. The chartreuse to lemon flower puffs on this deer resistant selection make an excellent filler in an arrangement. Globe thistle (Echinops ritro) looks equally at home in a cottage garden or a modern island planted amongst grasses. Around four to five feet tall, deer proof and drought tolerant, this perennial has silvery purple golf ball size spheres on strong stems. It will grow happily in full sun and is tolerant of salt spray.

Don’t forget the herbs I have to mention a few hardy herbs as they are a welcome addition to a bouquet and have use beyond their beauty. Any of the mints have pretty little flowers and will obviously root easily in water, which is nice when gifted! I love soft apple mint and fancy mountain mint. Purple sage has a soft dusky appearance and all of the sages have attractive little floral spires. While dill is an annual, it will self sow and is popular as a cut flower. All of the colorful ornamental basils are annuals of course, but pair nicely with flowers. Introducing any of these perennials and/or shrubs into your landscape is guaranteed to bring you enjoyment in the seasons to come. Happy planting and creating!

It comes with a blueberry sauce recipe that takes only 10 minutes, is super simple and makes enough to out last the last bite of this casserole …thats always a problem with sauce isn’t it? Never enough. But you’re covered on this one! Use fresh blueberries, but frozen is okay, too. (If using frozen, just toss them in 2 tablespoons of flour, so they don’t bleed all over your pretty little casserole. After tossing them in the flour, shake off the excess). FOR CASSEROLE 1 large loaf french bread. One-day old is best 6 eggs 2 cups half and half 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup fresh blueberries or frozen blueberries that have been tossed in 1 tablespoon of flour to keep them from bleeding

1 8 oz package cream cheese cubed. (for easier cutting put in freezer for 15 minutes) 1/4 cup raw sugar for sprinkling on top Blueberry Sauce 2 cups water 1 cup sugar 4 tablespoons cornstarch 2 cups blueberries

Instructions 1. Butter a 9 x 13 casserole dish. 2. Cut french bread into 2 inch cubes and set aside. 3. In large bowl, combine eggs, half and half, cinnamon, vanilla and salt. 4. Beat until thoroughly mixed. 5. Put one half of bread cubes in prepared dish. 6. Top with half cream cheese cubes and half blueberries. 7. Add remaining bread cubes and top with remaining cream cheese and blueberries. 8. Pour egg mixture over bread cubes. Press mixture down so it’s completely soaked by egg mixture. 9. Water Stains

IN YOUR HOME

By K. Curtis If there is one part of household cleaning that has me endlessly searching for solutions — it's the stain dilemma. For me, it is a constant battle with the bluegreen stains left in the tub and sink. I scrub and scrub and scrub. How do I get rid of them? Red or reddish brown stains result from rust or iron Rust deposits are a common problem on Block Island, especially for those residing in an area with high iron content in the water. There are certain kinds of bacteria thriving in the water of such areas, which

are responsible for creating this red or brown gunk in your sink, toilet, or tub. There are several ways of dealing with this problem. As rust stains vary, you may have to experiment with more than one method to find out which works best for you. Use the step by step instructions below, but with cleaners for rust or iron. You can also try a combination of any scouring powder, cream of tartar, and peroxide. This mixture takes approximately half an hour to remove the stains. Simply scrub the stains, let the mixture sit, and then rinse it away. Petie Hunter of Island Hardware suggests using Iron Out, which will not only

help remove the pesky stains in your sink, tub, and toilet, but you can also use it in your dishwasher and washing machine where build up can happen. She has plenty in stock at her store on Ocean Ave. Green or greenish blue stains result from copper or acid water When the water is too acidic, it is heavily laden with brass and copper contents. The result is blue or green stains in the sink and on all your plumbing fixtures. These stains slowly wear away all of your plumbing's fittings. Acidic cleaners or any allpurpose cleaner can remove these metallic stains. You can get acidic cleaners in all forms — many toilet or bath cleaners or kitchen cleaners available on the market are acidic. Among household products, white vinegar is a very effective agent for removing brass and copper stains from sinks. Lemon juice, which contains citric acid,

is as effective as vinegar. Phosphoric acid, which can be helpful in removing these greenish stains, is commonly found in stain removing products, while oxalic acid is especially effective as a rust remover. Island Hardware carries a cleaner called Whink, that works very well on these stains. Hard Water Hard water isn't harmful to your health, but it can be a headache. Hard water is water that's high in mineral content, such as calcium and magnesium. Water can absorb these minerals through rocks and soil before making its way to your pipes. The more minerals in your water, the "harder" it is. In contrast, water with low mineral content is often called "soft water." The minerals react with soaps, preventing them from lathering. Hard water can also can also make detergents less effective, causing unwanted spots on your dishes even after they've been through the dishwasher, for instance. Hard water can also cause buildup in your pipes and unsightly brown or white stains in your shower, sink, and toilet. Want to know if you have hard water? Turn on the sink, gather some soap in your hands, and run your hands under the water. If it lathers easily, you don't have hard water. If it barely lathers at all, you probably have water with extra minerals. If you have brown or white residue or scum that builds up in your shower, toilet or sink and won't come off easily with standard cleaners, this is also a tell-tale sign of hard water. Here's something you can try to help remove water stains — without using harsh chemicals or acids. Happy scrubbing! To clean the shower and sink: 1. Get an empty spray bottle and fill it half with water and half with pure white vinegar. 2. Spray the vinegar mix onto your shower doors, tub and tile and use a paper towel or rag to clean off the scum. Alternatively, you can put the mixture in a bowl and soak a towel in the liquid, then scrub the surfaces with the towel. 3. If you want to amp up the cleaning power, try creating a paste from white vinegar and baking soda. Spread it out over the surface of the stain, wait about 15 minutes and then scrub with a cloth or sponge. Rinse the area clean, and dry with a towel. Drying the area is very important, as you don't want to cause more problems by leaving the water on the surface for too long. 4. If this doesn't work, cut a few lemons in half or place lemon juice in a spray bottle. The acidity in the lemons should help break up the stains.

To clean the toilet: 1. Add 1-2 cups of vinegar to your toilet bowl and a few sprinkles of baking soda. 2. Using a brush with nylon bristles, swish around the cleaner in the bowl for a few minutes then let it sit for about 15 minutes. 3. Scrub the surface again with your scrub brush. If this does not get all of the stains, add some lemon juice, which should help dissolve the last of them. 4. Flush away the cleaner and repeat if necessary.
