Before the Ring & Proposal While both working as paralegals at a law firm in NYC, Phoebe and Shaun became friends before starting to develope romantic feelings for each other. Shaun worked up the courage to kiss Phoebe at a New Year’s Eve party — and the rest was set into motion. Phoebe was coming back from a friend’s bachelorette party in the Hamptons and Shaun suggested he would meet her at Grand Central Station upon her return. When Phoebe got to Grand Central Shaun told her to meet him at the clock tower and he was standing there with a big grin and holding the ring box.

there was no receiving line and they saw each other before the ceremony. The couple agrees that the Rose Farm Inn property was a beautiful spot and it was amazing to have so much land to themselves. They picked vendors based on who they liked and who understood them the best. The couple spent a lot of time researching the band and thinking about music — which always makes a huge difference. Phoebe was nervous to walk down the aisle, but when she did and heard the quartet playing her favorite song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and with her parents at her side she could not have pictured anything more perfect.

Block Island because..... “There is something magical and indescribable about Block Island. We visited for Shaun’s birthday a few years ago and absolutely fell in love with the place. It reflects our love of seafood, the ocean, and a relaxed lifestyle. We thought it would be the ideal place to have a low-key and warm celebration.”

The Wedding Weekend Phoebe and Shaun did not want their friends and family to spend only one night together, but wanted to bring everyone together for a weekend of fun. As the majority of guests were coming from the New York and Boston areas, Block Island presented a nice “in between” location for everyone to meet. Their guests enjoyed the casual, laid back vibe; the feeling that they were on an island vacation with plenty of activities such as riding bikes and mopeds. Instead of “favors” the couple had welcome bags waiting for the guests in their rooms with Block Island fudge, Block Island soap, and their favorite candy.

The Day & Design Phoebe and Shaun wanted to stay true to their desire to have a relaxed event — reflecting who they are. Phoebe did not want to wear a veil, she did not throw the bouquet,

Island Engagement Block Island is not only a popular wedding destination — it is also a fun place to "pop the question" to your sweetie. Popular proposal spots include the bluffs or any of the beautiful beaches, the Greenway trails or either of the two lighthouses— or anywhere in between! Just this past December, Brian and Kristen came to the island for the weekend — Brian was planning to ask Kristen to marry him. He spent days lining things up, and after a friend suggested it, decided to pop the question with a glass float. ‘The Glass Float Project’ is an interactive public art installation on Block Island — where visitors to the island are encouraged to participate in a hunt for glass floats hidden along the island’s Greenway trails and beaches. Eben Horton, of the Glass Station in Wakefield, R.I. created a special float inscribed with "Will You Marry Me" on it — for Brian' proposal. Brian had a friend hide the glass float at the Southeast Lighthouse, where, after reaching the top of the light, Kristen found the glass float and Brian gave her the ring. She said "Yes."

Before the Ring & Proposal Without even knowing that they lived just a few doors apart, Allie and Frank first met at Penn Station in NYC while both commuting from Long Beach, NY. Frank recognized Allie from the neighborhood and after riding the train home together that day, they exchanged business cards. Emails turned into text messaging, which eventually led to their first date. After a long-distance relationship of almost 2 years, Frank proposed by hiding playing cards around his house with letters on them — spelling out the phrase “will you marry me?” He left note cards for Allie with clues leading to each card except the last letter — which he had with him at work that day. When he returned home he gave Allie the last letter, flowers and the ring. Block Island because..... "We both agreed that Block Island was a great place and loved the feeling of stepping off the ferry and feeling relaxed and happy. When we got engaged and visited the island — stepping off that ferry yet again, we just knew." The Day & Design Allie and Frank were married on The Atlantic Inn lawn under an arbor made of birch, adorned with delicate tulle and drapped with beautiful flowers. As 100 guests looked

on, the couple exchanged vows and locked their "love letter box" — a wooden engraved box with two glasses and a bottle of their favorite wine, along with sealed love letters to each other. On their five year anniversary they will open the box read the letters, drink the wine together and write new letters — and repeat every five years. The color scheme of ocean blues and navy and white ribbon on the bouquets added to the nautical feel of the island— along with the raw bar at the reception. Favors were coozies that said “Two Less Fish in the Sea” with Allie and Frank's initials. The starfish place card holders for seating were propped up in a tray of sand gathered from Mansion Beach. Frank's favorite memory was their first dance and Allie loved greeting the guests for the first time at the cocktail hour — hand in hand with her new husband. The Wedding Weekend With a Friday night rehearsal dinner and welcome party (with beach bonfire) at Ballard’s Inn and a Sunday farewell brunch at The Atlantic Inn, the weekend was filled with everything Block Island has to offer, making it a fun get-away for family and guests.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. If you plan on bringing a car on the ferry – book it the first day they go on sale in January. 2. Use local vendors when you can, and don’t freak out if it takes them a little longer to get back to you. 3. If possible, try to make a week or at least long weekend out of it.

Before the Ring & Proposal While working at the same firm in Boston, Bridgette and Evan started out with small conversation around the coffee carafes and it took off from there. After a couple of years of dating, Evan transferred to Denver while Bridgette was finishing prerequisites for nursing school - resulting in a long distance relationship for about a year-and-a-half before before Bridgette moved to Denver for nursing school. In the summer of 2014, the pair drove 30 hours straight from Colorado to BIock Island. Their first bit of exercise after arriving was walking Clayhead, the first Greenway trail Bridgette took Evan on during his first trip to the island. Evan kept trying to persuade Bridgette to take a trail to the beach, which she was greatly resisting. Finally, he sent their dog bounding down the trail, and she had no choice but to follow. Down on the rocks, with the bluffs in the background and water in front of them, Evan pulled the ring out of his pocket and proposed. Block Island because..... “Most of my family and friends live on Block Island or close by. We immediately knew that we wanted the wedding on-island because we wanted to incorporate its beauty into our day.” The Day & Design The wedding ceremony was held at Smilin’ Through, a favorite island spot of Bridgette’s, under an arbor of wood that was hand-made by Bridgette’s father. All of the details were very personal, including the reading of a poem by Bridgette’s brother that their grandmother wrote in the 1940’s called “Life” which celebrates the great gifts that

love and friendship bring to life. The officiant that married them is a life-long friend of the family. The reception was held just down the road under a tent in the yard at the Closter home. The centerpieces and candle holders on the tables were handmade from recycled Colorado cedar and pine and most of the bottles that held the flowers were old apothecary bottles or antiques found in local shops and online. The card box was an old, wooden Narragansett Lager box the couple bought on eBay and they hoisted the mast on Bridgette’s grandparent’s old dory and used the boat as a gift drop. At cocktail hour, the DJ played bluegrass music rather than traditional cocktail hour music, and there were plenty of lawn games and a photo guestbook for which guests could take an instant photo, paste it in the book and sign their well wishes. It wouldn’t be a Block Island wedding without an oar, hand-painted by a family friend to resemble their invitations, for everyone to sign. And, instead of having cake or cupcakes, Bridgette and Evan had a cookie bar for dessert, with milk. The Wedding Weekend Thursday night, a bonfire was held for family and the wedding party. The groomsmen chartered a fishing trip the next day with Chris Willi of Block Island Fishworks. This was a great morning activity and the pre-wedding lunch was fresh fish tacos from their haul. The rehearsal dinner was at the Upstairs Room at Payne’s Dock— perfect for thirty people. They even made clam chowder shooters and tiny stuffies— giving out-of-town guests a real taste of Block Island. There was live music downstairs at Mahogany Shoals, so family and friends were invited to meet there after the rehearsal dinner. Block Island Weddings

Top 3 Pieces of Advice: 1. In the days leading up to the wedding, make sure you give yourself as much play time as work time. You are getting married in a beautiful place, so take advantage of it. 2. Stay local and plan early. We tried to choose most of our vendors from Block Island. 3. If you can’t keep it local and have to use an offisland vendor, try to utilize one that is familiar with Block Island weddings.

Before the Ring & Proposal Caitlin and Brandon met while each seperately visiting family in the Naples, Florida area. Fast forward a few years to the day Brandon proposed. He tricked Caitlin into thinking they were meeting his clients at a restaurant in town. Brandon had a private room that was filled with rose petals and candles, a big screen projector where he displayed a slideshow of pictures of the couple together throughout the years, accompanied by their favorite songs. In the middle of the slideshow was a recorded conversation he had with Caitlin’s father asking for her hand in marriage. He then asked Caitlin to become his wife. Block Island because..... “My family lives there and Block Island is considered home to me. The island has always been such a special place to me but since the first time Brandon had visited he fell in love with it as well! It’s just absolutely beautiful!” The Day & Design Following tradition, Caitlin and Brandon did not see each other on the wedding day until the ceremony. Seeing Brandon when the doors opened to St. Andrew Church was a favorite moment for Caitlin. Being married by the Reverand that baptised Caitlin and a Papal Blessing from

the Pope (through Brandon’s cousin who studies at the Vatican) were higlights for the couple. The reception was at Mitchell Farm, a private venue protected by The Nature Conservancy, with breathtaking scenery. Caitlin’s mother made the beautiful wreaths that hung on the church doors and also the wreath that was hung on the barn at Mitchell Farm, personalized with Brandon and Caitlin’s initials. Lanterns filled with sand and seashells surrounded the tent, small tables made of wooden pallets provided seatiing outside, all the arrangements on the cocktail tables and in the watering cans surrounding the property were made by Caitlin and her mother. The guests raved about everything from the delicious swordfish and tenderloin to the individually wrapped Del’s Lemonade packets that they got to take home. They danced the night away to the live band Soul Estate that Caitlin says “hands down made the night! They were a blast!” The Wedding Weekend Guests traveled to Block Island from all over the country — many of them came days in advance. Everyone who was in town early in the week met at Fred Benson Town Beach for “Blues on the Beach.” The rehearsal dinner was at the The Narragansett Inn, followed by a meet-and-greet at the National Hotel.

Before the Ring & Proposal Kate was living in northern Vermont when Marco started working for her father on Block Island. A family event five years ago brought her home for a weekend and that is when Kate and Marco first met. They started spending time together a few years later when Kate moved home. In the months that followed, Kate and Marco began to realize their love for each other was growing as fast as their friendship and on a sunny day in March of 2015 the couple went for a walk on the beach with Kate's dogs. There in the sand, Marco turned to Kate and dropped to a knee and asked her to be his wife. Kate's answer was, of course, "Yes!" Block Island because..... "It is where we live and work — it is our home." The Day & Design With so much of their relationship revolving around the farm that Kate grew up on, Kate and Marco wanted the ceremony to take place in the hay field next to the house

where they live. It was a chilly day with a bright blue sky filled with puffy white clouds. After the heartfelt ceremony, Kate and Marco invited their 220 guests to warm up inside the rustic wedding wonderland at Yellow Kittens, a favorite local hang-out. To help keep costs down, Kate and friends hand-made decorations and decorated themselves — using colorful paper poms that hung from the ceiling and burlap runners that lined the white tablecloths. Stalks of island reeds were attached to the pillars with burlap and bows and pots of chrysanthemums were on each table — Kate really wanted a rustic and laid back style. Appetizers and dinner were prepared by Winfields, Club Soda and Kate's mother. Lobster was brought over by Marco's family (who have a fleet of fishing boats in Point Judith) and was included in the delicious spread of beloved comfort foods including pulled pork, potato salad, and homemade apple crisp.

Before the Ring & Proposal Although they were one year apart, and not good friends, Rebecca and Christina met while playing rugby at Yale University. A few years after graduating, a rugby team reunion brought them back together and they ended up planning a long road trip with a mutual friend through the Smokey Mountains, and started dating soon after. Christina asked Rebecca’s parents for permission to marry their daughter. It was a fairly quiet proposal – Christina asked at home, on the couch, after Rebecca got back from a business trip. Christina almost forgot that she had a ring hidden in the cushions of the couch. Block Island because..... Rebecca’s family has been coming to Block Island for years and the couple wanted to share the beauty of the island with friends and family. Rebecca and Christina were able to have both of their families together at the AnastosWallen house for the entire week prior, setting up, relaxing (a bit) and spending time together. The Day & Design Rebecca and Christina’s family and friends played a big role in their ceremony. A former roommate officiated, Rebecca’s mother and Christina’s father performed part of the Greek marriage ceremony, Rebecca’s father and the couple’s sisters and friends performed part of the Jewish mar-

riage ceremony, Rebecca’s mother and Christina’s mother each gave readings, and a good friend played music. Rebecca built the arch they were married under out of driftwood from the beaches on Block Island. Christina crafted both of their dresses by hand. The ceremony included their own adaptations of traditional ceremonies—but included friends and family, making it feel wholly their own. The reception was under a tent in the same field as the ceremony and included a hand-made beer bar with two beers on tap, table numbers made from old cedar shingles, and a swing that was hand decorated and hung in the field. They even dusted off the Anastos-Wallen childhood lemonade stand (Ms. Lemonade) and had friends hand out drinks from it to guests as they arrived. Mason jar glasses were labled with table numbers for guest seating and they also provided guests with sunscreen and bugspray, as well as “dancing shoes” (flip flops). The couple put a lot of effort into little DIY touches, making the day exactly as they wanted it. Just one day before the wedding, The Supreme Court decision on marriage equality happened — making the celebration even more special for Rebecca, Christina and their guests. The Wedding Weekend Multiple events — a pre-wedding barbecue and a post-wedding brunch were planned since family and wedding guests were on the island all weekend — giving Rebecca and Christina a chance to see and talk to everyone in a more casual setting.

Before the Ring & Proposal Lauren and Brian became best friends while attending the University of Delaware, and they started dating soon after graduation. While on an Alaskan cruise with another couple, they planned a helicopter tour to a glacier outside of Juneau. Brian got down on one knee while they were posing for photos on top of the glacier. Block Island because..... While growing up, Lauren and her family anchored their boat in front of the Sullivan House during the summer. Lauren knew that one day she would be married there. Knowing that Block Island is so relaxing and beautiful, the couple knew their guests would love spending the extra time at the beach, in town, or on the water. The Day & Design After taking time before the ceremony to drive around the island for pictures, Lauren and Brian were married overlooking New Harbor on the lawn of The Sullivan House. Their officiant was a close family friend who personalized the ceremony amazingly — something their guests are still talking about. Wanting to thank all of their

guests for coming, Lauren and Brian had a receiving line right after the ceremony that led immediately into a cocktail hour. Seating cards were all tacked to a cork board that was a huge map of Block Island. As guests took their seating cards, the map was revealed — the perfect thing to have on display all night. With a customized menu, the food was delicious — the raw bar was very popular. And, instead of serving cake, the couple had Aldo’s Bakery make three varieties of ice cream sandwiches — a big hit with the guests! A spectacular sunset and a great band that kept everyone dancing were highlights of the day. The Wedding Weekend The festivities kicked off with a pool party at a private home on the Wednesday before the wedding. The following day, the couple planned a cookout at the bridal house for guests who were on the island. The rehearsal dinner on Friday evening was a Lobster Bake at the Block Island Maritime Institute put on by Catering by Kimberly, followed by a welcome cocktail party at the National Hotel with all the wedding guests. Coffee and donuts (Payne’s Killer Donuts, of course) were served at a departure gathering at the bridal house.

Plan events surrounding your wedding day, even if it is just telling everyone to get together at the same bar or spot on the beach. It allows you to spend extra time with your guests who have traveled so far to see you! 3. Encourage your guests to make a vacation out of the wedding, to enjoy the island for all that it offers. Before the Ring & Proposal Katie and Mike met through a mutual friend. Katie lived in Mike’s building many years ago and they were friendly but not friends, and it wasn’t until after Katie moved out that they started spending time together. After a day of sailing on Boston Harbor, followed by dinner at the Top of the Hub, Mike proposed on a dock back down in the Harbor, by a bar named the Barking Crab, where the couple love to spend summer afternoons with friends. Friends were waiting at the bar to meet them after the proposal, and little did they know, the entire bar had been actually watching over the railing, waiting for the big “YES!” They got a loud cheer after Katie accepted. Block Island because..... Katie and Mike wanted to get out of the city and find somewhere a bit more personal for both. Mike’s sister and brother-in-law have a house on Block Island — the island was one of the first trips they took as a couple. When looking for a wedding venue, Katie wanted something rustic and farm-like and Mike wanted something by the water. It turns out that Block Island offers both — all in one place! The Day & Design Katie and Mike had 15 months to plan the perfect wedding. The designated date was Oct. 3, 2015 with an outside ceremony and reception under a tent at Rose Farm Inn. One hundred and five people were invited to attand. The Monday before the wedding, Katie and Mike were forced to accept the fact that the predicted weather would proba-

bly mean that they would have to move the ceremony into the tent. It was Wednesday morning when the call came that the pending storm would mean no tent. Katie and Mike faced the possibility that all their months of planning, all the expense and personal investment of preparing for the biggest day of their lives might be for naught. And then, the ferries were cancelled for the Friday before the wedding day. Frantic phone calls by the bride and her mother began and that is when they learned how the people of Block Island come together to help. Eighty guests showed up, along with the photographer, the food, the cake, and the flowers, all thanks to dozens of shuttles from Westerly by New England Airlines. With the altering of plans, the ceremony was held on the back porch at the 1661 Inn and the reception was held at The Yellow Kittens. Walking into the ceremony was the first time that Katie and Mike saw everyone who had made it to the island and it was incredibly overwhelming for the pair. At the Yellow Kittens, Katie could not believe how the bar was transformed. Katie and Mike crafted a driftwood arch built from island driftwood that they collected — it was meant to stand behind them during the ceremony — but they ended up putting the arch by the entrance to the Kittens to welcome guests. Katie decorated mason jars for guest to take home as well as trucker hats with fun wedding slogans on them — Katie believes a party is much more fun with a party hat! Katie said “It all came together so beautifully, you never would have known it wasn’t the original plan. The entire wedding truly was a work of love and it made the day more special than we ever could have imagined! And it ended up being a pretty darn good party, too!”

Before the Ring & Proposal Lauren and Dan met in undergraduate school at Stony Brook University where Lauren was a cheerleader and Dan was a hockey player. Even though the school was large, their paths kept crossing. After spending an entire day relaxing while at Lauren’s brother’s house on Long Island, the couple walked down to the beach with some friends at the end of the day — Lauren’s absolute favorite time of day to be at the beach. As the sun was setting, Dan walked Lauren down by the ocean and asked her to marry him. Block Island because..... “We especially love how Block Island is the type of place where, as soon as that ferry pulls in, you feel your troubles melt away. Even though it’s not that far from home, you feel like you are a million miles away! Logistically, a wedding on Block Island gave us the destination wedding we had always imagined — without asking our guests get on a plane. We really looked forward to sharing a place that became so special to us.” The Day & Design Lauren and Dan decided to have their wedding day on a Monday — and why not? This idea only opens up even more possibilities — from venue and caterers to car reservations or accomodations! This couple’s wedding was held on the lawn of The Sullivan House over-looking New Harbor under a hand-made flower-covered arch that Lauren built with her brothers. Although the ceremony was traditional in structure, it was beautifully written and delivered

by one of their closest friends. A cocktail hour with a raw bar was a big hit with guests — and almost as popular was the ice cream bar for dessert. A menu with New England Clam Chowder shooters and lots of fresh fish captured a real coastal feel and Lauren and Brian’s signature cocktails of Sweet Tea Vodka and Lemonade and White Sangria kept the libations islandy. Lauren and her father surprised everyone at their father/daughter dance by cutting a traditional slow song into “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. Guests went crazy when they saw Lauren’s dad jumping around with his blue violin and the red cowgirl boots she was wearing under her gown. Not to be outdone, Dan and his mom secretly prepared a perfectly choreographed dance to a medley of musical hits — complete with a glow stick finale. The Wedding Weekend After a traditional rehearsal of the ceremony at the Sullivan House, Lauren and Dan planned a sit-down dinner with toasts and slide show at The National Hotel with their families and bridal party. The rest of the wedding guests joined them after dinner for a welcome reception with cocktails at the main bar. The couple planned a postwedding bon fire to continue the celebration down at the beach when the reception was over. Guests were told to bring a change of clothes to the Sullivan House so that when the reception ended, people could change into comfortable clothes and walk over to the beach. All guests were invited to attend a champagne breakfast at the 1661 the day after the wedding — a casual and fun way to spend a little extra time with everyone.

Ask them questions, listen to their advice and trust that if you do, things will run smoothly. 2. Make a very detailed wedding website and send the link with your Save the Date. Include as much information as you can, add more as it becomes available, and guests will be able to refer to it when they need to. 3. Make it more than just a one day affair. This will encourage your guests to stay a little longer and make it a mini vacation.

Before the Ring & Proposal Jeanette and Jeff met through mutual co-workers on a dock during sunset, in Providence. Jeff proposed to Jeanette with a surprise Christmas gift of an engagement ring. Block Island because..... “We were looking for a beautiful beach on an island close-by and Block Island was our first get-away destination when we were dating.” The Day & Design Jeanette and Jeff ’s ceremony was on Ballard’s beach and the reception followed on the patio. The staff set up the beach beautifully —away from regular business — and the patio was sectioned off nicely with umbrellas and table seating. After the ceremony, the guests moved to the patio where everyone was able to order off the menu — a

creative idea for a smaller wedding! The couple thought the food was delicious, receiving many complements from their guests, as well. Jeanette’s daughter played the acoustic guitar throughout the cocktail hour and some of the reception, and the touching toasts were made by the best man — Jeff ’s father — and Jeanette’s son. The day was topped off with Lemoncello for tradition and chocolate pops shaped like lobsters for dessert — followed by a bon-fire with smores on Ballard’s beach that evening. The Wedding Weekend The day before the ceremony, the couple had a welcome event for family and friends at Poor People’s Pub, dining outside on the patio. The following morning after the wedding, a brunch at Harborside Inn was a nice farewell event before departing from the island.

Officiant: “Ken Lacoste was wonderful! He braved the wind and walk down the beach to get to the North Light and saved the ceremony by bringing the vows that the groom forgot!” says Katie. Before the Ring & Proposal Katie and Michael met on the dating website OkCupid.com. After a very practical discussion and decision to get married, Mike totally surprised Katie with a romantic proposal on Ponte Garibaldi during a trip to Rome. Pausing on the bridge to take in the views of Rome with the lights twinkling on the river, Mike began listing all of the lovely, romantic reasons why he wanted to marry Katie, before presenting her with the antique ring that they had picked out. Block Island because..... “Our lives up until the day we met were completely different, and Block Island is one of only a few things we had in common. Mike grew up going there and sailing around the area, and I had spent a week there one summer with my family. On one of our early dates, I wore my Block Island sweatshirt, and we learned that we shared that connection. When it came time to decide where we would get married, it only made sense to go to the place where we had a bit of shared history – Block Island.” The Day & Design Katie and Michael toyed with the idea of just going to City Hall to elope — but then decided that even though it was just going to be just the two of them, they still wanted the wedding to be special, in a special place. Everyone the couple encountered helped make their wedding day spe-

cial—but the most memorable was going to the Mohegan Café for a drink en route to the wedding-site in the dunes at the North Light, where the owner had wrapped little champagne bottles in white paper and flowers and presented them to the couple for their wedding toast. It was a simple gesture that meant so much. Katie and Michael brought their bicycles to ride to the ceremony, adorned with wicker baskets to carry a bottle of champagne to have after they tied the knot — and while Katie was getting ready, Michael picked some daisies and decorated the wicker basket on Katie’s bicycle. The ceremony lasted less than 10 minutes. The only guests were the photographers and the wildlife that surrounded them. Katie and Michael recall it was profound to stand together amidst the dunes, feet from the vast ocean and to pledge to love each other. The couple had a dinner-for-two at the Bistro in the Spring House Hotel where the food, service and the ambiance were all terrific — and to top it off, a group of local patrons toasted them as they walked in. The Wedding Weekend Katie and Michael kept the planned elopement secret for more than a year. The day after their wedding, they printed postcards announcing their elopement with a photo of the pair on their bicycles sporting a “Just Married” sign on the back of one. They mailed these from the New Shoreham post office that day and they arrived at family and friends just as they were returning from the trip.

Before the Ring & Proposal Christina and Pete met in French class at the University of Rhode Island in 2005, and sat next to each other on the very first day, and every other day that followed. Finally, on the very last day of class, after final exams, Pete asked Christina if she wanted to hang out — and they have been hanging out together ever since. The proposal came on a crisp day in February when the couple was taking a beach walk with their dog, and unbeknownst to Christina, Pete had a plan that involved friends hiding in the wings to capture the moment he got down on one knee to propose — they even planned the night before to bring champagne and glasses. Block Island because..... “Hands down, it offered the most beautiful location for our wedding. All of the seasons on the island have so much beauty, so it’s always a great place to getaway to.”

Right after the ceremony, the couple wanted some pictures taken on their favorite jetty —so Christina temporarily traded her wedding shoes for sneakers and together with their photographer, trekked down to the beach (see cover photo). Time alone together at one of their favorite spots after the ceremony was a highlight in their day. Peter hand-made the reception seating chart out of driftwood and the guestbook came from a fallen tree in their front yard— now used as a quaint table by a reading chair in their home. Noting that the DJ was incredible, the couple loved that every single person was dancing. A late night food platter come out about an hour before the end of the night — the perfect time to have a little snack. Christina and Peter agree that the single most successful thing they did was keeping it the way they had always dreamed of — making sure to keep each other’s wants and needs at the center of the big event.

The Day & Design Christina and Peter were married on a beautiful October day overlooking the ocean on the lawn of The Spring House with 130 guests in attendance. After taking the traditional route of not seeing each other before the ceremony, it was even more special finally seeing each other at the alter. Christina and Peter loved having a sailors knot tying ceremony — the marriage knot is secured to sym-

The Wedding Weekend Christina and Peter’s families rented guest homes on the Spring House property for the wedding weekend. It gave this destination wedding a very homey feel by having places people could relax, eat, drink and just enjoy each other’s company. The couple also noted how fun it was to see all of their different groups of guests intermingling both before, during, and after the wedding — all weekend long!

Before the Ring & Proposal Kelli and Derek met on the dating website, Match.com. While vacationing in New Hampshire and having lunch at one of their favorite places, Derek excused himself mid-way through lunch to get something from the car (Kelli later found out it was the ring). Following lunch, Kelli and Derek headed out for a walk and stopped under a beautiful tree — that’s when Derek quoted a movie he had seen and said to Kelli “In life, you need to love to live, and you need to live to love.” Derek then presented Kelli with the ring saying “I want to love and live my life with you.” During the wedding week, Derek gave Kelli a card every day leading up to the wedding. In one of them, he placed leaves from the tree under which he proposed, as a memory of where their engagement journey began. Block Island because..... “Block Island felt right, and it felt like us. It was relaxed and low-key but with plenty to do. We wanted to create special memories of the wedding for our children and family and decided we’d give them (and ourselves) a vacation leading up to the wedding day. Our children had never spent time on the island before, so the whole experience would be new for all of us as a family. Plus, it was easy to get to, while feeling far away.” The Day & Design Kelli and Derek’s ceremony was held at Stone Beach, a small and intimate venue overlooking the ocean on the

east side of the island. Derek’s long-time family friend and pastor was the officiant, creating a very special ceremony for the couple. The bridesmaids, Kelli and Derek’s daughters, picked out their own dresses, which weren’t bridesmaid dresses, but fit within the color scheme and are likely to be worn again. Both Kelli and Derek’s mothers each gave a reading during the ceremony — a special moment for the couple, and Derek’s daughter Claire played a song for the couple on her guitar at the reception. Block Island Gourmet created great appetizers and an outstanding meal — the filet mignon was the highlight. The couple chose to have wedding pie instead of cake, with wonderful individual fruit pies and key lime tarts. The guests were consistently on the dance floor and thoroughly enjoyed themselves all night long. The Wedding Weekend Summer Hill was the perfect location for this family, giving their five children, friends, and family plenty of room to settle in for the week while providing a close location to town and the beaches. The highlight of the week was the oyster farm tour in New Harbor. The welcome dinner doubled as a rehearsal dinner, which was also held at Summer Hill. Catering by Kimberly provided a delicious barbecue and Mike and Gail Dugan (Summer Hill’s owners) were terrific hosts ensuring that guests were well taken care of.

We started this process 18 months in advance. 2. Use local vendors or those that work often on Block Island. 3. Give your guests at least six months of notice (and possibly eight) so they can plan their stay and block their calendars.
