FRIDAY, NOV 10
Family Lectures: Session 1 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Alexandra Solomon—School of Education and Social Policy All About Love: The Challenges and Opportunities of Intimate Relationships in the Digital Age (McCormick Auditorium, Norris University Center) Dr. Alexandra H. Solomon is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and a licensed clinical psychologist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. She teaches the popular course, “Building Loving and Lasting Relationships: Marriage 101,” in the School of Education and Social Policy (SESP). This course has been featured in media pieces on five continents including, most recently, The Today Show. In this talk Professor Solomon will bridge theory, clinical wisdom, and research in order to explore the question, “What makes modern love so challenging?” She will also offer strategies and insights that help us bring our best and bravest selves to love.
Stephanie Edgerly—Medill School of Journalism Youth News Exposure in an Age of Media Choice (McCormick Foundation Center Forum) Media choice is a defining characteristic of the current media environment. With more media options, however, also raises concern about how individuals manage the high-choice media environment and the implications for news exposure. So, how are young adults making sense of the current media environment? What role (if any) do parents, schools, and peers play in predicting news use among today’s youth? Answers to these questions, and more, will be provided during Professor Edgerly’s talk.
Mei-Ling Hopgood—Medill School of Journalism The Global Prism: How Identity and Culture Shape How We Consume and Create Stories (Lake Room 203, Norris University Center) Professor Mei-Ling Hopgood from the Medill School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications is a journalist and author who has written extensively on identity and culture. She will discuss how our backgrounds and our experiences impact our perception of the media and the choices we make when we read, engage with, and tell stories. Using journalistic techniques, she says, can help us be become better listeners in a polarized world.
Rives Collins—School of Communication Storytelling: A Life Skill for the 21st Century (Louis Room North, Norris University Center) Storytelling is an ancient art form, much older than theatre. Given its antiquity, is it any wonder that storytelling is being heralded by current brain researchers as part of our DNA—that we are hard-wired for narrative? The 21st century has seen a remarkable renaissance of this ancient art form – from fields as diverse as medicine, law, business, education, and the arts. In a complex world that grows increasingly high-tech, the high-touch experience of storytelling becomes significant both as an art form and as an asset in our daily lives and work. This talk will leave us with a richer understanding of this fundamentally human ability: the art of the storyteller.

Family Lectures: Session 2 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM - Claudia Haase—School of Education and Social Policy All You Need is Love? What Relationship Science Can Tell Us about Couple’s Emotions (McCormick Auditorium, Norris University Center) What makes or breaks a relationship? This question has long occupied scholars and laypeople alike. Relationship science shows that emotions play a powerful role in relationships. But how can we study couples’ emotions? Which emotional behaviors predict relationship happiness and which predict misery? Why do some spouses blow their tops while others keep their cool during conflict? And what happens to couples’ emotions as they get older? In this lecture, we will discuss insights from relationship science on the role of couples’ emotions, watch short video clips, and learn how to spot a fake smile.
Michael Beltran—McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science (MEAS) Printing and Additive Manufacturing (Ford SB-310, RP Lab) The Engineering Rapid Prototyping lab houses the most advanced 3D printing and additive manufacturing equipment available at Northwestern University. Michael Beltran, lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and director of the lab, will be giving a short overview of 3D printing and additive manufacturing technology, as well as a live demonstration of the state-of-the-art machines and processes used in prototyping and product development. Visitors will be able to observe various 3D printing processes, and see close-up the advanced technology Northwestern has available to its students and researchers. FRIDAY, NOV 10 Noelle Sullivan—Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Why Good Intentions are Not Enough: Unintended Consequences of Altruism (Louis Room North, Norris University Center) Whether a humanitarian disaster, development aid, or volunteering for important causes, there is a profound assumption that actions taken with the best of intentions generally have positive outcomes. However, often organizations and individuals engaging in such altruistic endeavors advertise their own accomplishments, with very little input from the people on the ground purportedly helped. In this presentation, Dr. Sullivan demonstrates what empirical anthropological research can teach us about the unintended consequences of altruism. She shares results from over a decade of empirical research in Tanzania, East Africa, in order to help us rethink what it means to be helpful in volunteering, disaster relief, and beyond.
Renee Engeln—Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences The Psychology of Human Beauty (Lake Room 203, Norris University Center) Renee Engeln is a Professor of Instruction in Psychology and the author of Beauty Sick: How the Cultural Obsession with Appearance Hurts Girls and Women. In this talk, she will take a scientific look at how beauty affects our everyday lives, considering how humans are drawn to beauty, whether beauty is really “in the eye of the beholder,” and how media images of beauty shape our self-perceptions.
Afternoon with the Undergraduate Schools (Events held at various times and in various locations by school) Families will have the opportunity to interact with and hear from school leadership. In lieu of a formal reception, Bienen School of Music will feature open rehearsals for family members to attend.
