TEACHING WITH ART AT NORTHWESTERN blockengagement@northwestern.edu

The Block serves as a catalyst for teaching, discussion, and meaning-making The Block Museum of Art is an essential campus resource for interdisciplinary teaching and learning with art online, in the gallery, and in the classroom. The Block’s staff is available to help develop plans for curricular and co-curricular experiences across disciplines.

Virtual Drop-ins

The Block’s curatorial team can work with you to schedule an online class drop-in and conduct a close-looking exercise with an artwork related to a course.

Artwork Selection and Course Planning

The Block staff can suggest artwork across time, culture, and medium to support your research interests and curricular goals. We offer assistance integrating art into assignments and online teaching, including the creation of custom virtual object portfolios for your class.

Gallery Tours and Objectbased Discussion

“Collaboration with The Block enabled me to draw on the collection, as well as the expertise of staff, to expand the scope of my classes in ways that will leave a lasting impact both on the students' experience and also on my own pedagogy." - Topher Davis, Asst. Professor of French

Art is a starting point for understanding our world and conversations that matter today. Our engagement or curatorial staff can lead object-based discussions for co-curricular programs, sharing artwork as a discussion prompt or providing context on past projects and exhibitions.
