A year in review: Our communities Our partners Our colleagues Our friends
2018 was a great year for our company’s business — and for our volunteer efforts. Our employees and their families, together with many customers and partners, came together to protect our environment and serve our communities. Giving back has always been a core part of who we are as a company. And every Bloomberg employee, in every one of our offices, makes it possible for Bloomberg Philanthropies to help people around the world live longer, healthier lives.

“The mentorship and opportunities I received as a Bloomberg Scholar gave me the chance to develop myself and build unforgettable relationships. Every mentoring session with my Bloomberg mentor, Frederic, was impactful and filled with many practical takeaways. I was given the opportunity to work on various projects alongside other interns and colleagues, through which I learned a lot about Bloomberg and financial markets. The financial aid really helps to take off a lot of burden from my shoulders and allows me to focus on my studies instead. I would like to thank the employees who contributed to the scholarship fund for their kindness and generosity, and I assure you that I will remember to pay the kindness forward. Fariha Ahsan Bloomberg Startup 35 Scholar Summer 2018 Intern Singapore

As part of the Bloomberg Startup education and mentoring program, Bloomberg offers a wide range of activities including a robust high school and college internship and apprenticeship program globally, designed to support academic achievement and prepare students for further education and careers. The program has grown to more than 3,650 Bloomberg employee volunteers supporting students through mentorship and skills-specific workshops in 41 cities across the globe. Philanthropy & Engagement works in collaboration with Recruiting and Diversity & Inclusion to recruit interns from Bloomberg-supported nonprofit partners in the Bloomberg Startup network. In the summer of 2018, there were 159 Startup interns and apprentices across three regions in nine Bloomberg offices. Bloomberg’s 35 Startup Scholars program entered its second year in 2018, and the scholars were also offered the opportunity to apply for summer internships at Bloomberg. Scholarships were funded by 59 Bloomberg employees who chose to designate their Dollars for Your Hours grant toward the program. Created in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the 35 Scholars program provides opportunities to gain a higher education for 35 high-achieving, low-income students globally.

“My fellowship at Bloomberg allowed me to see what I was really capable of. I took the time to watch and learn from managers, received advice from fellow colleagues, and had a great mentor and role model in Alyssa Lewis Matabeek. Alyssa is a sales manager who has a unique perspective, so even after my fellowship ended, I was able to consult her for advice on interviewing and she helped me strategize next steps. The program had a profound impact on my life, giving me a new way to approach situations both in a professional setting and at home. It’s amazing how one experience that was meant to serve a single purpose ended up serving so many others.” Clyde Meertens 2018 Fortune Fellow at Bloomberg New York

Fortune Fellowship at Bloomberg
2018 saw the expansion of our pilot career and workplace readiness program with the Fortune Society, establishing a fellowship for justice-involved individuals returning to the workforce to achieve sustainable, fulltime employment. The Fortune Fellowship at Bloomberg is a 16-week biannual program to develop professional skills, expand the participants’ professional network and build confidence. Also, Fellows are assigned a mentor to provide career guidance and help them navigate a corporate environment. In 2018, 19 Bloomberg Fortune Fellows graduated from the program after having worked in one of seven units within Bloomberg. Since the launch of the program, 29 of 31 participants have completed the program (94 percent) and 86 percent of graduates are employed full time. Clyde Meertens, a Fortune Society graduate, was recommended for the fellowship program after completing a Job Readiness Workshop. After graduating from the fellowship program, he is now working full time at Dinex and developing a career in restaurant management.

Education Financial Journalism Training Programs
With the aim of advancing opportunities for students and journalists in the fields of finance and business, Bloomberg supports a wide range of Financial Journalism Training Programs centered on reporting on financial markets and global economies. The Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA), the largest of our financial journalism training programs, is a pan-African program to strengthen media capacity and improve access to information on the continent. With the success of the financial journalism training program in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, in 2018 BMIA sought new partnerships with universities in Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. We also support university-affiliated programs in other parts of the world, including the Asian College of Journalism – Bloomberg Postgraduate Program in Chennai, India; the Fudan and Tsinghua universities’ Global Business Journalism programs in China taught, in part, by Bloomberg Editor-at-Large Lee Miller; and our support for disadvantaged students studying business and financial Journalism at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. To increase the number of underrepresented communities in journalism, Bloomberg offers oneweek immersive programs in business journalism at the University of North Carolina and the University of California, Berkeley, led by Bloomberg’s Editor-in-Chief Emeritus Matt Winkler. In 2018, we announced the launch of a training course in Dubai for aspiring Saudi journalists, in partnership with the MiSK Foundation. Bloomberg News journalists around the world support these programs, from developing and delivering course materials, to conducting Bloomberg Terminal training, or providing mentoring to interns in our global news bureaus.

Team Bloomberg
“2018 marks my 11th year working for Bloomberg. Like many, my loyalty to the company is not only down to my passion for our business — it’s also driven by my belief in the impact Bloomberg has through its philanthropic work. We’ve had the chance to leverage that work to enhance our team-building programming including Build the Future. I’ve also taken part in several Teach First initiatives, an opportunity that has led to meeting incredible people who dedicate themselves to creating equal opportunities for all in education — a cause that is close to my heart.” Lucy McGuinness Analytics London

Bloomberg’s commitment to service advances the company’s core values of diversity & inclusion, sustainability and wellness. Through team-building volunteer projects and exercises hosted by our nonprofit partners around the world, employees shared unique opportunities for learning, camaraderie and growth. Partnerships with city governments like Mayor Sadiq Khan and Team London initiative provided employees with new perspectives on city priorities and how local residents can use their time and expertise to address them in the areas of homelessness, food provision and tree planting. Supporting leadership development at Bloomberg, we worked with Build the Future, a six-month leadership program for high-performing managers across business units to provide opportunities to strengthen relationships. At the 2018 gathering in New York, 100 leaders from diverse departments across 15 cities traveled to Governor’s Island for a special service project and team exercise committed to fostering deeper networks across the business. The Network Accelerator Program in London achieved similar results for our local emerging talent through a partnership with the educational charity Teach First.

“I am delighted to have worked with Bloomberg Philanthropies to help bring Eliasson’s important Ice Watch installation to London, building on our city’s rich heritage of public art and demonstrating our joint, ongoing commitment to making London a greener, more sustainable city. London has always been unafraid to blaze a trail, and the Mayor has set us the ambitious target of becoming a zerocarbon city. The sculpture at Bloomberg and at Bankside, Tate Modern, has captured the imagination of Londoners of all ages and helped them to understand first-hand the environmental challenges we all face.”

Through innovative partnerships and bold approaches, Bloomberg works to advance creativity and innovation while increasing access to culture and strengthening arts organizations around the world. We have corporate memberships at more than 271 arts and cultural organizations in 48 cities globally, giving employees access to world class art, exhibitions and performances. The London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE celebrated its oneyear anniversary in 2018, welcoming nearly 125,000 visitors since its opening and receiving numerous awards. More than 128 employees volunteered with the Mithraeum’s weekly school group tours as part of the free facilitated schools program. In 2018 we also unveiled the first Waste Not Want It installation in Asia. Originally commissioned for City Gate House in 2016, Light Rods by Tom Price was preserved and shipped to our Hong Kong office at Cheung Kong Centre after the relocation of our London headquarters to a new building. Following the relaunch of the Arts Club, 2018 saw our membership number expand to 10,612 clients. Our support for public art also extended to some of the most visited installations around the world. Artist Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s floating London Mastaba in Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake featured on the Bloomberg Philanthropies Mobile Tours at the Serpentine Galleries, the Narcissus Garden by artist Yayoi Kusama, presented by MoMA PS1 at Rockaway in New York; the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo in Brazil; and UNTIL by artist Nick Cave at Carriageworks in Sydney are among some of the free public art supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies in 2018. In the final weeks of 2018, artist Olafur Eliasson and geologist Minik Rosing’s major public art installation Ice Watch officially launched, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, outside of Bloomberg’s new European Headquarters and the Tate Modern in the heart of London.

Bloomberg’s trademark of excellence in service for our customers extends to helping our neighbors in need and providing compassion by supporting the homeless, addressing food insecurity, and helping veterans and refugee communities, as well as individuals impacted by natural disasters. To support relief and recovery efforts following emergencies, Bloomberg employees helped raise more than $600,000 for 7 organizations and created nearly 40,000 kits with emergency supplies for neighbors in need around the world. The BOB Legal Pro Bono volunteer program also expanded in 2018. More than 60 percent of Bloomberg’s legal team provided more than 3,500 hours of legal expertise to support underserved communities through programs supporting veterans, victims of domestic violence, entrepreneurs and immigrants, among others, including our first successful case for an LGBT individual seeking asylum. In 2018, the pro bono program received two awards, the 2018 New York Law Journal Legal Department of the Year for Pro Bono & Community Service and the 2018 Cornerstone Award from Lawyers Alliance for New York, and new programs were launched to expand our legal pro bono efforts across EMEA and APAC regions. To help combat hunger and food insecurity in our local communities, Bloomberg employees around the world have helped provide nearly 1 million meals to individuals and families in need.

Sustainability
“Bloomberg’s significant support has been invaluable to Community Greening, not just for the delivery of the program, but for the participants themselves. Some of the practical support and companionship provided by the Bloomberg volunteers has helped greatly in reducing the amount of physical work like weeding and mulching large communal areas whilst helping to decrease social isolation. Participants have expressed their appreciation for the efforts of Bloomberg staff who have engaged in the program, and for some community gardeners, the demonstration of support has motivated them to commit more time and effort to their community and inspired them to take on new challenges. Phil Pettitt Team Leader of Community Greening at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney

Employees at Bloomberg are also doing their part to support the environment, with over 2,000 employees dedicating more than 17,370 hours of hands-on action supporting local greening efforts in 33 cities around the world in 2018. In London, Bloomberg continued its support for Buckhill Meadow with the Royal Parks Foundation, with more than 200 employees providing essential conservation and maintenance throughout the year. Employees also collaborated with Trees for Cities to plant 3,000 trees as part of the London Mayor’s National Tree Week efforts. In New York, through our partnership with Governor’s Island, more than 600 employees throughout the year helped construct a new roof for the horticulture shed, cleared 25,000 square feet of park space by removing 4,000 gallons of harmful invasive plants, and harvested 2 gallons of wildflower seeds to be used for next year’s plantings in Hammock Grove, among many other projects. In Sydney, Bloomberg expanded its commitment to the Royal Botanic Garden’s Community Greening Project. More than 60 employees in the Sydney office contributed almost 100 volunteering hours to support the project this year. Bloomberg employees joined local community members for mulching and weeding while connecting with seniors as part of the parks’ efforts to combat social isolation and maintain mobilization by improving accessibility in local gardens.

“I have not stopped talking about how incredible my time was with my dedicated team at Bloomberg. I feel so honored and privileged to have had some of the greatest business minds diving into my small business. In 2018, we cohosted the second graduation ceremony of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) program in Baltimore — the program’s first-ever co-investment between Bloomberg Philanthropies, Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs Foundation, to help create jobs and stimulate economic growth. The program, launched in 2017, has now graduated more than 125 small business owners in Baltimore through four education classes. The program in Baltimore includes a consortium of education partners including the Community College of Baltimore County, Johns Hopkins University and Morgan State University. The event served to recognize and thank the local community for supporting 10KSB and the city’s entrepreneurs, while giving graduates an opportunity to discuss their experiences in the program and small business growth in the Baltimore area and throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C. Bloomberg also cohosted the fifth Annual Coaching Session at Bloomberg’s Global Headquarters in New York, and the second annual coaching day in London, where employees used their professional expertise to provide guidance on topics such as financial modeling and development strategies for small businesses. Since its inception, this one-day coaching session has provided U.S. and U.K. small businesses more than 3,400 cumulative hours of pro bono services from more than 300 volunteers.

With an aim at connecting employees with the groundbreaking work they help fuel at Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg Associates, teams from the foundation reached more than 2,600 employees through presentations across 32 cities around the world. In 2018, Rose Gill Hearn of Bloomberg Associates Municipal Integrity and Transparency Practice delivered the keynote address at Bloomberg’s Data for Good Exchange conference, an annual gathering of data scientists, nonprofits, government officials, researchers, and corporations focused on using practical applications of data science to address challenges related to social good. Bloomberg Associates also presented their work on a panel focused on advancing equity in local city data, alongside representatives from the Obama Foundation, BrightHive and My Brother’s Keeper Houston. Additional presentations were given by participants of the Data for Good Immersion Program, which brings together doctoral students with Bloomberg Philanthropies-supported nonprofits to help them address a specific challenge through a data science lens. The three Bloomberg-supported organizations presented in 2018 included Love City Strong VI, the Billion Oyster Project on Governor’s Island, and the City of Milan, in conjunction with Bloomberg Associates. Bloomberg employees also supported initiatives introduced by Bloomberg Associates and Bloomberg Philanthropies including volunteering during the Night of Solidarity in Paris, a count of the homeless population inspired by a similar successful initiative run in NYC during Michael Bloomberg’s tenure as Mayor, building a data visualization tool for the World Health Organization in London, and participating in the C40 Women4Climate mentorship program in cities around the world.

“Both my wife and I come from humble backgrounds and have grown up through our share of financial hardships. As photojournalists, we have both also delved deep into countless socioeconomic injustices while working in South and Southeast Asia on assignments. This is why as parents we are committed to bringing Tara, our daughter, up with full exposure to doing not just charity work but also to volunteer for anything that can make a difference to better the lives of other people, animals and the environment.
