The Bloomingdale Park Board of Commissioners is the legal governing authority through which the business of the District is conducted. Park Commissioners are elected by residents of the District to a six-year term without pay. Once the Park Board meeting has adjourned, all board members return to their roles as citizens and taxpayers. It is only the Park Board, acting at a legally constituted meeting, which has the authority to establish or change policy, sign agreements or award contracts. The Park Board has appointed a professional executive director to manage the operation of the District on a daily basis. The Bloomingdale Park District Park Board meets at 7 p.m. at the Johnston Recreation Center, 172 S. Circle Ave. in Bloomingdale. The public is invited to attend. Meeting schedules, board agendas and minutes are available at www.bloomingdaleparks.org.

50th Anniversary Celebration The Bloomingdale Park District celebrates its 50th birthday in May 2014. On May 2, 1964, a referendum was passed (104-10) to establish a park district and elect the following as commissioners: Joe Slater, president; Jack Sheelor, vice president; Ron Richards; Don Rottenberk; and Margaret Johnson. The Park District begins celebrating with special offers and pricing in this issue. The 2014 In-Season Summer Brochure contains events and discounts related to the 50th Anniversary. Swim Lessons

Little Nemos (Pre-K)

The Oasis swim lesson program offers a complete curriculum that encourages students to succeed and develop skills. Swim lessons teach participants how to be safe in and around the water while providing fun and fitness. Check each level to choose the correct placement for your swimmer. Drop-Off Guidelines Please escort your child to the pool deck and remain with him/her until his/her name has been called and the instructor has arrived. Once your child is with his/her teacher, parents should proceed to the designated parent viewing area. Thank you for your cooperation.

Athletic Association Contacts Score 6 – Pursuing Victory with HonorSM The Bloomingdale Park District is excited to show continued support for the CHARACTER COUNTS!-based certification program for coaches, parents, officials and children called Score 6. This program incorporates the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship into youth sports. The primary goal of the program is to build character through these six pillars while teaching the fundamentals of the sport. This program has been implemented in hopes that the main focus of youth sports is placed on fun instead of winning at all costs. We realize winning is important – to an extent. However, we need to make sure the rules of the game are followed and the players, coaches, officials and opponents are respected at all times. We need to focus more on teaching young players how to win with honor and lose with dignity and pride. The outcome is to keep the fun in sports! Parental involvement and cooperation are essential to the success of this program. Parents and coaches are required to attend a Score 6 meeting and sign a code of character. Athletes are not allowed to participate until at least one of their parents has attended a Score 6 meeting. The program is completely free and lasts approximately one hour. This program is designed to impact all sports programs. Once you become certified, you are not required to attend another meeting. We appreciate your cooperation with the Park District and look forward to seeing you at one of the Score 6 meetings listed below. Thank you for your continued support and remember character does count in youth sports in Bloomingdale! Parents and coaches may attend a Score 6 meeting at any time, even if they are not currently involved in a youth sport. Attendance is required for the entire session. Please visit www.bloomingdaleparks.org to register online. If there is not a minumum of two participants registered by 4pm on the day of class the class will be canceled. Questions regarding registration, please call 630.529.3650.

We Love Parents, however . . . With your child’s best interest in mind, parents are asked not to attend their child’s class unless invited by the instructor. We have found the quality of instruction has often been affected by parent and/or sibling distractions, interruptions and various other concerns. It is of equal importance that children have quality leisure time with their peers. Our instructors welcome the opportunity to discuss concerns with parents before or after class, time permitting. Thank you again for your cooperation.

NEWS Summer 2014

Happy Birthday to Us! That refrain will be sung for the next several months as the Bloomingdale Park District celebrates 50 years of service to the residents of Bloomingdale, Roselle, Medinah and Addison. The foresight shown by a handful of individuals in 1964 gave birth to 160+ acres of parkland, miles of trails, playgrounds, sports fields, an aquatic facility, a museum, a festival and concert facility, and a recreation center that has provided thousands of children and adults recreational and educational experiences that have, and will, last a lifetime.

Buzz Puccio

Over those 50 years, the concept of recreation has changed dramatically. Having moved to Bloomingdale in 1973, I have witnessed most of those changes. In the early days, the thought of parents exercising while the kids practiced didn’t enter many minds. Today it is a common sight to see groups of parents walking the trails or attending an exercise class while sons or daughters are taking batting practice. Throughout its history, the District’s commissioners, directors and employees have successfully stayed ahead of the trends rather than being left behind. This foresight culminated this past year in the opening of our first fully-accessible playground at Sunnyside Park, offering recreational opportunity to all abilities. As we emerge from the worst economic crisis in our nation’s history since the Great Depression, many challenges still remain. Some are proactive and provide for the demands of tomorrow. But more so than in years past, funding those needs is much more challenging. Instead of raising taxes, many of our programs are partially funded by their participants. We have actively sought sponsors to absorb those extraordinary costs and have applied for and received grants whenever possible. A recent study as has pointed out community parks (20-35 acres) can add up to 33% to residential real estate value., while the value of a home increases up to 20% when it is facing a well-maintained neighborhood park (10-15 acres) or open space recreation area. We pledge to continue the work that started 50 years ago that makes Bloomingdale such an attractive place to call home. Elsewhere in this program guide, you can find events that commemorate our 50th Anniversary. Please consider this an invitation to one and all to join in the celebration. After all, recreation revolves around YOU!” Also, visit www.bloomingdaleparks.org for a list of previous Bloomingdale Park Board Commissioners and executive directors. I offer my personal thanks to each of them for paving the pathway for us to follow. I am proud to have been a member of this board for 16 years and to have served as its president the past four. I urge you to thank each of those commissioners still with us and remember those whom have gone before us with gratitude for their service. I promise that the best is yet to come. Sincerely yours, Sebastian “Buzz” Puccio President Bloomingdale Park District Board of Commissioners

The Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. in the community room of the Johnston Recreation Center. The public is invited to attend. Minutes and agendas are available online at www.bloomingdaleparks.org.
